Introducing ALDI Little Journey

It's been a good 10 years since my daughter was a toddler, and I honestly thought those days were long behind me— until we made the decision to move back home where my sister and her family live. Now instead of seeing my niece and nephew once or twice a year, I see them on a weekly basis.

Being an aunt is pretty amazing because it lets me relive all of those adorable baby and toddler moments while being able to hand-off the little munchkins at the end of the day.

My husband and I watch our nephew, who's almost 2, a few hours a week so my sister can do some errands or have some much-needed time alone. Instead of her lugging over a bag with baby supplies every time she visits, we've opted to buy and store a stash of diapers, wipes and snacks (basically the 3 essentials for toddlers!) at our home so we always have what we need.

At first, it was a little weird having packages of diapers and wipes in our pantry, but I've secretly grown to love buying these items and others for my nephew. If for no other reason, it gives me another excuse to go shopping!

When we moved, we discovered ALDI, one of America’s favorite grocery stores*. It only took one trip for me to fall for their incredibly low prices and unique Aldi Finds .

Last month ALDI introduced Little Journey, its first full line of baby products— and like most new products at ALDI, I had to check them out!

With everything from newborn diapers to training pants, cleansing wipes to gentle baby wash and formula to solid snacks, ALDI now offers parents’ (and aunties!) everyday essentials in one convenient location.

I took my nephew to the store and stocked up on all the new goodies. Like almost everything at ALDI, the prices were incredible. I bought 70 size 5 diapers for only $12.49! Wipes were just $3.49 for 3 packs of 72! And snacks start at just $.79! {Price and availability may vary}

When we got home, I let my nephew try the new goodies. He was equally impressed, especially with the snacks!

The Little Journey infant-to-toddler snacks make nutritious eating easy with yummy foods little ones will love, made from ingredients parents will feel good about.

I gifted my sister some of the extras and she says the quality is just as good as other leading brands and the prices are much, much lower. She was so impressed she asked me, " what time does Aldi close ? so she could get to the store and stock up!

You already know how much I love ALDI – their quality and pricing is simply tough to beat in my book.  We shop at ALDI every 1-2 weeks for the bulk of our groceries and every time we shop we tend to notice new products on the shelves.  ALDI continues to innovate and come out with new products and new varieties of the old products that we know and love.  Many times these new products have a way of ending up in our cart because we just  have to try them.

Little Journey, Baby Food at ALDI!

Feeding a child is frustrating. Allegedly it takes 12 times for them to try certain foods before they will eat it. Tommy will love something one day, so I’ll go out and buy it in bulk and then refuse to eat it the next day.

Does he not like the taste? Is he not hungry? Is it not warm enough?

And then, when he doesn’t eat it, you know who does? I do. Even at 9 months old, I’m already eating Tommy’s leftovers. For now they are things like broccoli, eggs or peanut butter toast, not baby food purees obvi. Those get tossed if uneaten 24 hours after they are opened.

I think the food introduction phase kills me because I see how much food we waste. For every pouch I buy that Tommy refuses, I see myself throwing out $2 each time. I sorta feel the same way when I change his diaper and I feel like I didn’t really need too.

Luckily, I discovered a cheaper solution for trying and finding keepers

This makes going through diapers faster than you thought humanly possible not so bad.

Diapers at ALDI range in price from $4.99 to $12.49 depending on the size and pack quantity. They boast a stretchable waist and side panels, dual leg cuffs, 12-hour leak protection, vitamin E and aloe and are hypoallergenic.

We tried them out and are happy to report back that Tommy had no leakage, blow outs or rashes!

I was impressed by the wipes especially. For a pack of 72, they cost $1.29. As someone who uses wipes on everything, this is an amazing deal.

I am still breastfeeding Tommy but I can imagine that the formula is a huge saving compared to Enfamil or Similac at a regular grocery store.

My favorites are the organic pouches which each cost only $0.79 per 4 oz. Tommy runs hot or cold on pouches but he really likes these especially the apple, pear and spinach! They are made with pure fruit and vegetable combinations, without genetically engineered ingredients and BPA free packaging.

I like pouches because they introduce vegetables like spinach to Tommy that he otherwise wouldn’t be eating on a regular basis. I know I can make food from scratch with spinach but a good pouch is easy.

Tommy also is really into eating with his own fingers so the puffs and munchers are awesome. Both cost $1.39 for a 1.48 oz package. Tommy would eat only cheese puffs if I’d let him.

If you haven’t been to ALDI before, you are in for a shocking surprise as to how affordable grocery shopping really can be. Some things to note before you go is that you’ll need a quarter to grab a shopping cart at the start of your experience, your own bags and that the unique shelving is to save money. Everything they do is to reduce their costs to run a business to keep the products priced low.

NEW ORLEANS, La. (Ivanhoe Newswire) - Imagine your baby being born healthy and then within months, they start to lose the ability to move their arms and legs, fingers, and toes. This is what happens to infants born with spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA. Without early treatment, most babies will not live to see their second birthday. But now, there’s new hope—an oral medication that can be given at home that literally stops this disease in its tracks.

When little Ryu Koizumi was born in the Philippines, everything seemed perfect. But then, at eight weeks old, things took a turn for the worse.

“He’s losing the muscle strength on his legs,” said Hazel, Ryu’s mother.

With limited access to genetic testing, it took months to figure out what was happening.

“It’s like you lose all your dreams,” said Ryu’s father, John.

Diagnosed with SMA, John and Hazel decided to come to the states where new treatments could help save Ryu.

“Because the nerves aren’t speaking to the muscle, then the muscle becomes weak,” said Dr. Ann Tilton, a child neurologist at LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans.

SMA is caused by a defect in the survival motor neuron one gene.

“These genes allow the motor neuron to survive. So, if you don’t have that, then you lose the nerves. The most efficient one is called SMN 1 – that’s what’s missing in spinal muscular atrophy,” explained Dr. Tilton.

Now, the first FDA-approved oral medication to treat SMA—Evrysdi—can turn on the second SMN gene, making it more active. Dr. Tilton can hardly believe what she’s seeing.

“It’s absolutely remarkable that they have developed a medication that can turn on a specific gene to alter the natural course of a disease. I mean, what a world, it’s just absolutely miraculous,” she said.

As for Ryu, his parents now have hope.

“He is showing a lot of progress already. Like, he started to, like, move his fingers a little,” said Hazel.

Another medication was approved for SMA in 2016 but it involves a spinal tap every four months. Evrysdi is the first and only oral medication approved by the FDA. SMA is a genetic disorder that involves both the mother and father to carry the gene. About one in 50 people in the United States actually have the potential to have the SMA gene. Nearly all U.S. states are now screening newborns for SMA, and given the progressive nature of the disease, early awareness and treatment are critical.
