Planning a romantic getaway? Here are the best couples' vacation spots around the world to visit with your special someone.

love travel places

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy — and enjoying uninterrupted one-on-one time as you visit new places together. A trip with your significant other, whether domestic or international, almost always guarantees you'll learn something new about one another — perhaps your girlfriend gets a rush from cliff diving, or your boyfriend can make friends with anyone despite only being able to say one phrase in the local language.

When you're deciding where you want to go, consider which components of a romantic getaway matter most to you. Are you up for sightseeing and doing outdoorsy activities together or do you lean more toward enjoying quiet moments in intimate settings with a view?

For instance, couples looking for a chance to fully unwind might opt for a beach vacation or spa weekend in a beautiful destination, while those searching for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure may want to book an African safari. Foodie couples might want to eat their way through Paris's fine restaurants, while more active travelers may prefer to hit the slopes or go snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

Whatever your travel style, here are 25 of the best vacation spots for couples.

Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

If your version of romance is hiking through monkey forests and rolling rice paddies — or dancing to DJ sets and light shows until the wee hours of the morning — head to Bali, a beautiful Indonesian isle known for its vibrant nightlife scene. Stroll hand-in-hand on white-sanded shores in the southern part of the island or by the volcanic black sand beaches of its northern and eastern coasts. In addition to historic temples and shrines, Bali is also home to heaps of high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes worth checking out during your trip.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber / Travel + Leisure

Visiting Santorini is like traveling to a cloud-like oasis that envelops you in an ethereal fantasy. In other words, there's no surprise as to why it's a popular choice among newlyweds looking for a picture-perfect honeymoon destination . The romance of the island pretty much sells itself; wandering the hilly, weathered streets, you'll be surrounded by bright white walls and blue roofs, while in the evenings, you'll have front-row seats to incredible sunsets. Once the sun is down, the island really lights up, with its houses, churches, and restaurants glowing like stars.

Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Ashour Rehana / Getty Images

Aside from traveling to Tanzania to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, many make the trip to see the country's incredible wildlife conservation sites and national parks. Going on a safari allows you and your significant other to share some unique firsts: the first time you see a lion, the first time you drive across the African plains, dotted with baobab trees, or the first time you meet someone from the local Indigenous community, to name a few.

You'll want to visit Ngorongoro Crater , the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. Its bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area's mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, its large lion population, and the sheer diversity of habitats and animals you'll find here.

Tulum, Mexico

NurPhoto / Getty Images

Two core pillars of many romantic vacations are relaxing in intimate settings and enjoying exciting experiences, and Tulum has plenty of chances for you to do both. Rotate between lounging out on tropical beaches, snorkeling at nearby Xel-Ha Park , swimming in a natural sinkhole (or cenote), and touring ancient Mayan ruins, many of which are still intact. After a perfect day in Tulum , packed with leisure, adventure, or both, the cherry on top will be grabbing a drink at Gitano and relishing in its funky jungle atmosphere.

Whistler, Canada

A great way to bond as a couple is by getting active, and skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is great for both veteran and beginner skiers alike. Take on the mountains, offering numerous trails of varying intensity, enjoy an overhead view of the snow-capped trees from sprawling gondolas, break for lunch at the mid-mountain lodge, and top off your day with an après ski special at one of the slope-side bars. If one day of skiing leaves you with wobbly legs and your fill of downhill action, there's a lot more going on at the base of the peaks. Whistler Village is a lively, pedestrian-only hub of bars, shops, and restaurants. The little winter wonderland is as charming as the inside of a snow globe, and what's better for a romantic getaway than that?

Cappadocia, Turkey

UIG / Getty Images

For a fairytale vacation, there's nothing more fitting than a landscape dotted with "fairy chimneys," the tall, thin cones topping the many rock sites of Cappadocia. Cave churches, underground cities, and homes carved into the rocks work to create a whimsical aura usually reserved for the fictional realm. Floating high above the rocky terrain in a brightly-designed hot air balloon , you'll feel like characters wandering the pages of a Dr. Seuss book (or like astronauts discovering a civilization on the moon). Either way, the otherworldly experience will have you recapturing your sense of childlike wonder and awe together.

Paris, France

Most clichés became clichés for a reason, and so is the case with Paris' romantic reputation. Looking at pictures of couples in the City of Light, you can practically see the cartoon hearts in their eyes as they embrace in front of the Eiffel Tower. Paris and romance go together like Valentine's Day and chocolate, anniversary dinners and candlelit bistros, marriage proposals and world-famous landmarks… all of which Paris is not-so-coincidentally known for having.

Hakone, Japan

Zhang Yun / Getty Images

While not as romanticized for cherry-blossomed strolls as its neighbor, Kyoto, Hakone is a worthy day trip from Tokyo, offering an intimate escape from city travel in the most relaxing way possible: hot springs resorts . Aside from relaxing in onsen (hot springs) at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn), you can take advantage of the natural sites, like Lake Ashi and the volcano Mount Fuji , or tour the fire-engine red Hakone Shrine and open-air sculpture museum . The many transportation options , ranging from boats and cable cars to rolling train routes through the mountains, also seem like mini adventures, making yours all the more memorable.

Northern Norway

AFP / Getty Images

If you've ever considered stargazing a romantic experience, northern Norway really ups the ante with its naturally occuring cosmic activity. The region covers about one-third of the country and is considered one of the best places to see the northern lights in Norway . They usually make an appearance from autumn to mid-April, while from late April to mid-August, the sun is still visible late at night thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the " midnight sun ."

Feeling adventurous? Venture even farther north to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard's January and February months have "polar nights," when night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this kind of trip together, be warned: Looking up at the stars in your own backyard might not be quite as impressive anymore.

Porto, Portugal

Paula Galindo Valle / Travel + Leisure

Porto is a waterfront merchant city that seemingly transports visitors to an earlier time with its cobblestoned streets, baroque churches, and prevalence of port factories and family-owned businesses. Nearby in the Duoro Valley , you can visit vineyards where wine has been produced for more than 2,000 years, sample it, and participate in harvesting practices such as stomping on the grapes. It's the perfect part of Portugal to spend a day or two , if not longer. In a city infused with the culture of wine making and drinking, you and your significant other can get tipsy on the energy alone.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Known for its natural and architectural beauty, Italy's Amalfi Coast is a prime choice for a romantic Mediterranean getaway. Travelers can bask in the natural scenery, hike through dreamy seaside villages with picturesque views, and visit famous sites such as the Grotta dello Smeraldo (the " Emerald Grotto "), as well as medieval churches, gardens, and museums. When you need some quiet time for just the two of you, there are a number of secluded hotels offering oceanfront views and luxurious amenities.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Filippo Bacci / Getty Images

In Argentina's bustling capital, you and your significant other will never run out of activities to try, with lots of live entertainment and a multitude of restaurants and bars. For a day-to-night date, La Boca is a vibrant neighborhood known for Tango dancing and El Caminito, a pedestrian walkway lined with houses and shops painted in bright primary colors — strolling through this vibrant neighborhood is one of our favorite things to do in Buenos Aires .

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, these 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, will have you sailing into uncharted relationship territory with unbelievable sites to discover together. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most popular white-sand beaches in the country — despite it being a tourist hotspot, you've got 4.3 miles to play with, making it easy to stretch out and find your own space.

In addition to enjoying blissful beach days, you can embark on some truly unforgettable and romantic excursions while visiting the islands, such as flying over Heart Reef in a helicopter, staying aboard a boat for a few days, or snorkeling at the legendary Great Barrier Reef.

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

Design Pics / Helene Cyr / Getty Images

While Turks and Caicos is certainly not a new destination for romantic vacations, most visitors flock to Providenciales, the first major stopping point on the tropical archipelago.

Far less popular (and far more secluded) are the pristine beaches of South Caicos , just a short, scenic connecting flight away. If you're looking for something truly special — perhaps to celebrate an anniversary or another special occasion — Sailrock Resort is a luxury property nestled within natural brush along white-sand shores that lead into crystal-clear water. You'll experience the type of picturesque serenity you thought was only accessible to movie stars, yet there the two of you will be, sipping colorful cocktails together on a hammock at the beach's edge, with nothing but the open, beautiful horizon spanning ahead of you.

No matter how active you decide to be, Barbados is one of the best vacation spots for couples. The island's west coast is home to several high-end resorts with various offerings to make your Caribbean escape extra memorable. Arrange some classic island excursions, such as snorkeling, private boat trips with companies such as Seaduced , or visits to local attractions like the spectacular Hunte's Gardens and Rihanna's childhood home.

For a dose of local cuisine and culture, spend an upbeat Friday night at Oistins fish fry or sample some of the island's best rums on a tour of the Mount Gay rum distillery . You could also kick back and make relaxation your number-one priority by simply enjoying the beautiful beaches and temperate water. For a dinner you won't soon forget, head to The Cliff , which overlooks the water in a sultry, fire-adorned setting.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

For the ultimate romantic vacation, charter a boat and sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. If you start your journey in Dubrovnik and end up in Split, you'll get a comprehensive look at the country, from nautical exploration to sightseeing in both small seaport towns and big cities. With a stopover in a new place every night, the transit is part of the fun, rather than merely a means to get from point A to point B.

Travelers mainly book Turkish gulets (or small yachts) with separate quarters for the crew. Companies like Gulet Yacht Adriatic Holiday offer packages that include the services of a captain, chef, and one or two crew members to help curate not just your route, but everything else you do while you're on the water or shore. While the busy season is typically from June through early September, trips also set out in October and make a great option if you want a bit more quiet and privacy on the Adriatic Sea.

In Jackson Hole , you can enjoy winter sports in a stunning setting just a short distance from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . Plus, you can book a stay at a luxurious property like Amangani or the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole for a truly romantic trip — or the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort if you're both skiing or snowboarding enthusiasts.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is often a favorite city among Travel + Leisure readers , and once you visit, it's easy to see why. Dine at delicious restaurants, take a sunset cruise in the harbor (where you may even spot a dolphin or two), and visit one of the nearby beaches. In addition to the beach, guests can golf, lounge by the pools, enjoy spa treatments, and participate in other activities like tennis and horseback riding.

New York City

For some couples, taking on a major metropolis is just as romantic as spending a week by the beach. And when it comes to big city destinations in the United States, it's hard to beat New York City . Every night is date night on vacation, so go to dinner and take in a Broadway show, enjoy extended evening hours at some of the world's best museums, visit acclaimed restaurants and cocktail bars, and stroll through Central Park to soak in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

Palm Springs, California

Escape to the desert with a trip to Palm Springs, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lined with palm trees. Plan your visit in the spring, fall, or winter to avoid the intense summer heat, and admire mid-century modern architecture as you hit the links or head to the spa. The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is a luxe pick for a pool with a view, while the Parker Palm Springs is another trendy choice.

Itching for a romantic weekend getaway? While we fully believe that there's no better anniversary gift than one that will help you make memories together (though we wouldn't say no to some nice jewelry ), you don't have to save your vacation for a special occasion. Sometimes a quick couples trip can be just what the doctor ordered. You can head to the Southern US or an all-inclusive in the Caribbean for sunny, beach-friendly weather, the Northeast or West for some mind clearing mountain air, or even European capitals to see the highlights.

The first step is deciding what kind of couples vacation you’re craving: Do you plan on hunkering down in the sheets all weekend? Are you ready to hit the pavement and explore a new city through its museums and restaurants? Or are you looking for a relaxing babymoon destination where you can dig into a juicy new nonfiction book and wiggle your toes in some warm, powder-soft sand? We've compiled some of our favorite locations around the world—from affordable locales to high-end resorts for celebrating milestones—all of which will ignite the romance. So pack your best swimsuit (or puffer jacket ), hop on Expedia (their new ChatGPT tool makes even last-minute planning super easy), or grab a Booking.com promo code , and read on to find out which trip is perfect for you…and yours.

Dominican Republic

Courtesy of Eden Roc Cap Cana

The Dominican Republic may be more well known for spring breaks than romantic weekend getaways, but that could be because you’ve never visited the eastern tip of the island, a paradise known as Cap Cana. Here you’ll find one of the Caribbean’s best marinas for fishing, miles of white-sand beaches for fun in the sun, and some of the country’s most glamorous and romantic hotels. Our pick in the area is Eden Roc Cap Cana , DR’s only Relais & Châteaux property that boasts a whopping 30,000 acres for true seclusion. Apart from elegant beachfront villa accommodations, there is also a brand-new spa and wellness program that includes many in-room services like couples massages and custom bath soaks. And those looking for the most unique romantic dinner should make sure to book a private meal at the boutique property’s on-site cenote, a limestone cave complete with a waterfall fountain. If you're looking for a more inexpensive option, Punta Cana has droves of lovely (and “affordable”) all-inclusives like The Majestic Elegance , which is on a stunning beach with crystal-clear water.

Le Barthelemy

Courtesy of Le Barthelemy

The glamorous island in the French West Indies is known not only for its elegant hotels but its many peaceful white-sand beaches and romantic watering holes. We recommend a stay at Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa , a boutique oceanfront property that can arrange romantic excursions like a sunset cruise on a private yacht, custom couples massages in partnership with swank beauty line La Mer, and oversized suites complete with private plunge pools that call for a skinny dip.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Whether you've been with your SO for a few months and this is the first time you're traveling together or you're celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary, one of our favorite destinations for some serious fun is Nashville. The Music City has everything: bustling honky-tonks to blow off steam and boogie down (we're partial to the old-school vibes at Robert's Western World), incredible eats (we're still dreaming about the wood-fired edamame and Wagyu brisket at Noko and the slab bacon at Oak Steakhouse ), chic cocktail bars far from the main drag (we love Bastion ), and a vibrant arts scene. For a taste of all of the above, stay at The Bobby , where you'll have easy access to its concert series featuring local artists, a slick pool, and one of the most IG-worthy watering holes—its 1956 retrofitted Greyhound bus—and we're just talking about what's on the rooftop. The sleek boutique hotel, which just turned five, has a gallery, a sexy Garage Bar where you can leave your (literal) mark (the walls are adorned in neon graffiti), and some of the most comfortable beds in Tennessee. Though it's perfectly located steps from Printer's Alley and a quick walk from Broadway, you'll feel like you're in an oasis away from the fray if droves of bachelorette parties aren't your thing. And if you did spend most of your weekend mixing and mingling with the girls in the veils, the menu at Union Tavern offers plenty to help you soak up the whiskey. It's the type of eclectic place that'll make you feel like a rock star, which can be enough to shake up any couple's rut.

From the East Coast, you can fly to Puerto Rico in less time than most road trips, making it an appealing long-weekend destination during the winter months, but we love it in the summer too. Its capital, San Juan, is also one of our favorite cities for couples due to its mix of beautiful, historic buildings, and many charming, intimate restaurants. For an inexpensive hotel that is still suitably pampering for a romantic weekend, check in to the Condado Vanderbilt , located in the über-chic Condado district. The storied Spanish Revival property boasts amenities like pool and beach butlers, Puerto Rico’s only hammam, and two different oceanfront restaurants.

Antigua may not get as much attention as some other Lesser Antilles islands like St. Kitt’s or St. Lucia, but we think being a little more under the radar is what makes it one of the more romantic locales in the region. We’re huge fans of its gentle ocean breezes, peaceful white-sand beaches, and the vibrant coral reefs to explore by snorkel or scuba. And if you’re longing for a vacation during which you don’t have to plan a single thing, check out Curtain Bluff , an all-inclusive with—thankfully—delicious food and plenty of on-site bonding activities like snorkeling trips to Cades Reef or couples tennis lessons. And if your MO is simply to laze, your beach concierge can certainly help with that.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

About 168 miles north from Mexico City, the fairy-tale-like San Miguel de Allende is more than worth the three and a half-hour drive it takes to get there from the capital (or an hour and a half from the nearest airport in Léon, Guanajuato). The storied city, first established in the 16th century, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and makes for an idyllic long weekend escape. Chic overnight options abound in San Miguel de Allende, though, for a truly memorable experience that captures the historic charm, consider staying at Casa de Sierra de Nevada, a Belmond Hotel. Located in the heart of the city center, the property consists of six restored 17th- and 18th century Mexican mansions in a walkable cluster, each complete with vaulted archways, bougainvillea-shaded courtyards, and ornate, trickling fountains. Accommodations-wise, there are 23 suites and 14 rooms, each one uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and local artworks. The outdoor pool, ensconced in lush greenery, is certainly a highlight, but far from the only one. There’s plenty to love and enjoy when staying here, from the central location to the variety of food; the hotel is home to two restaurants (Andanza and Restaurante del Parque), plus the Sazón Cooking School and Tunki Rooftop by Handshake, a rooftop bar with arguably the best views and cocktails in town. (Stop by for a drink at sunset and thank us later.) Having a car in San Miguel de Allende isn’t needed, as nearly all the main attractions are walkable; the hotel is minutes away from the daily Market, the Parroquia church (a 17th-century gothic marvel), and the best churros in town at Chocolates y Churros San Agustín. A vibrant art scene thrives in San Miguel de Allende; La Fabricá la Aurora is a must-visit for discovering the local crafts.

If you're thinking of heading out west, it's well worth spending a few days in the Land of Enchantment. Fly into Albuquerque, then make your way north to Santa Fe, an hour and change drive to New Mexico's capital. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Santa Fe is a popular destination for creatives and adventurers of all stripes, with a big local arts scene, unique pueblo-style adobe architecture, and tons of skiing, hiking, and mountain biking available throughout the year. For a weekend trip, stay at the charming Bishop's Lodge , which is located just outside the downtown area in Tesuque. It's the perfect place to appreciate the rich cultural history of New Mexico and reconnect with nature. Spend the morning swimming, horseback riding, or hiking around the property, then arrange for a pueblo tour for after lunch, followed by a massage in the spa. Book dinner at Sky Fire, which specializes in wood-fired dishes with local, seasonal ingredients. For a day trip, make time to visit Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiú, which is open for private and public tours throughout the year.

Miami is an understandably popular destination: sunny skies, sexy cocktail bars, and plenty of beaches. But not every hotel screams romance when music from the rooftop bar is pounding until 2 a.m. That’s why we’re huge fans of Surfside, a more peaceful and elegant enclave due north of the debauchery of South Beach. And one of our favorite hotels there is one you’ve probably seen on Instagram: The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club . A veritable oasis in the middle of the buzzing city, it boasts oceanfront rooms, some of Miami’s best restaurants, and a historic lobby bar that is as sultry as they come. They offer plenty of ways to pamper your significant other, including private poolside cabanas for some surreptitious canoodling, and personalized cocktails from the cocktail trolley at The Champagne Bar. Pro tip: You can even ask for a custom picnic basket to set up a romantic dinner on the beach. The Setai is another perfect place if you're there more to soak up the sun than the tequila. The entire property is dimly lit to exude all the calm energy, and that's nothing compared to visiting the five-star Valmont spa (get the Luminosity of Ice facial, trust us). There are also three different pools all set at different temperatures so you can swim year-round, and there's private beach access, too. As for dining, the Setai's options are unmatched. We're partial to Jaya which has a selection of Asian-fusion dishes and evening entertainment like fire dancers and contortionists.

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún might not be the first place you think of for a relaxing family vacation, but there's no reason why it can't be—and one of the best places to unwind in the Yucatan peninsula is the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa , one of the area's most modern and luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Set on a palm tree-studded beach, it features not one, not two, but six pools between the rooftop and the ground level that are perfect for entertaining couples, friend groups, and families with young kids. As an all-inclusive resort, food and drink is the star of the show: There are multiple Mexican cuisine options (including a taco food trunk on the beach), a Japanese restaurant, a steakhouse, and Chinese fusion up on the roof. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the suite—or in the Gourmet Hall, which turns into a massive buffet each morning. For a slow wakeup or night in, there's of course room service, which is handled here by a dedicated floor butler who's available round-the-clock. Since the word “spa” is in the resort's name, you'd be remiss not to book a spa appointment, which offers massages and facials, as well as a signature hydrotherapy circuit. (Pro tip: Book an evening session and watch the sunset as you alternate between dips in the cold plunge bath and the heated jacuzzi.) A four-night stay would be ideal to enjoy a little bit of everything the resort has to offer (hi, morning yoga), though we wouldn't blame you for wanting to extend your trip by a few more days.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Aruba, known as One Happy Island, is one of our favorite Caribbean vacation spots not only for its world-famous beaches but for its relative affordability. It has plenty of hotels for couples, like the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino , which is a popular spot for engagements (hint-hint). The hotel even employs a sunset concierge, who can suggest the perfect romantic spot for popping the big question. And if you’re already married? Fun fact: Aruba is also known as a vow-renewal destination and the hotel can set up a whole renewal package, which includes a couples massage and a 30-minute photo shoot during sunset. If your idea of romance is singing your heart out, the downtown happens to have a very fun piano bar . Or while away the day at Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort's private flamingo island, which is excellent for photo ops.

Puerto Vallarta

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s western coast, is fast becoming our favorite beach destination in the country. Not only are the shores of the Pacific Ocean spectacular, but many of the resorts in the area are comparatively inexpensive. One of the standout properties here is the Hilton Vallarta Riviera, which is perched between the Bahia de Banderas and the tropical forests near the Sierra Madre Mountains. And because every room here is outfitted with a private balcony, it’s a stellar hotel for a romantic escape. Or, for a hotel with history, stay at Casa Kimberly , the former home of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (you can also just stop by for a cocktail). Plus, the LGBTQ+-friendly downtown has an array of fun bars, restaurants, and cabarets (don't miss the Beyoncé impersonator ), as well as affordable places to stay. We love Pinnacle Suites which is relatively inexpensive, especially if you're traveling with another couple.

We couldn’t write a romantic travel guide without including the City of Love, right? While we probably don’t need to sell you on Paris, we’ll give you a quick primer: Everything is beautiful. From the winding streets of Le Marais to the stunning art collections at Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre to the quiet elegance of the Seine River, it’s hard to turn a corner here without feeling amorous. And if you’re celebrating a special anniversary or just looking for a bit of a splurge trip, Hôtel de Crillon is jaw-droppingly romantic. Located in an iconic and historic building in the heart of the city at Place de La Concorde, the property is one of Paris’s grandes dames for good reason. For couples, indulgence is the key word here, from the bespoke treatments at Sense, a Rosewood Spa, to intimate private dinners at La Cave, to enormous suites, some of which were designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Don’t miss a meal at the brand-new restaurant, Nonos et Comestibles par Paul Pairet, helmed by one of France’s most acclaimed chefs. There's also the new Hôtel Dame des Arts in the Left Bank that features a beautiful rooftop bars with views for days. Celebrating a milestone anniversary? Also consider the Cheval Blanc Paris , which is, in a word très magnifique thanks to its stunning panoramic views of the Seine.

Wailea, Maui

You’re probably aware of the charms of the Hawaiian islands, and of Maui specifically, but we will direct you to our favorite part of the island: Wailea. With 1,500 acres of beaches and resorts and only 35 minutes from the Kahului Airport, it’s the idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. And no hotel in the area is better for couples than Hotel Wailea , an all-suite and—crucially—adults-only boutique property. For a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, book a meal in the hotel’s secluded treehouse, where couples can savor a seven-course meal while suspended among fragrant mango trees.

Mexico City

Mexico City is the most chameleon-like of cities, seemingly able to adapt to any sort of vacation, for any type of traveler. And with its charming, colorful streets, incredible yet inexpensive restaurants, plentiful mezcal, and temperate climate, it’s certainly top of mind for romantic weekend getaways. For a refuge that is both high-touch service but affordable, look into the charming Ignacia Guest House . With room for only 18 guests, it’s incredibly intimate, and it’s also filled with private terraces and fragrant gardens that can be the setting for clandestine kisses. Even better, it’s a proper bed-and-breakfast. Guests wake every morning to the smell of tortillas cooking on the griddle, and can sit down to a glass of orange juice freshly squeezed from the old-growth citrus trees on property.

New Orleans

Courtesy of International House Hotel

If romance to you means excellent food and drink, and live music, then consider New Orleans. One of our favorite boutique hotels is also one of the city’s most inexpensive. International House , located just a few blocks away from the French Quarter, is inside a beautiful Beaux Arts building that is also the city’s first boutique hotel. The hotel can arrange a private cocktail experience at its award-winning bar, loa, or even a private Vodou ceremony, which includes creating a lucky charm for the couple.

Santa Barbara

Courtesy of Mar Monte Hotel

While you can’t really say Prince Harry put Montecito and Santa Barbara on the map, we are finding ourselves more interested in the central California coast after he and Meghan Markle set up camp there a few years ago. Unfortunately, we can’t wrangle you a double date with the duo, but we can point you in the direction of one of Santa Barbara’s best hotels: Mar Monte . With three acres of Spanish-inspired grounds and a pool with oceanfront views, it’s the prime weekend getaway for romance. The hotel is also offering a special Mar Monte by Land and Sea package for the holiday, which includes a private flight, a three-hour wine tasting, and a private sunset charter on a yacht.

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Elegant London, with its beautiful architecture, plentiful parks, and bountiful cultural activities (hello, West End), is one of our favorite cities for a romantic escape. And our preferred spot for a couples vacation is The Mayfair Townhouse , an intimate and stylish hotel that's primely located. Besides the attentive staff, we love the hotel’s on-site watering hole, The Dandy Bar, which is a great way to end a busy day of sightseeing (or begin the start of your evening). Couples looking for the utmost privacy and space should ask for the The Garden Suite, which comes with its own conservatory and patio. Or book a stay at the newly renovated, Dorchester in Mayfair which has an especially sexy site for sipping, the Vesper bar , which plays homage to James Bond.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

There are few places we’ve visited that are imbued with a sense of calm like Palmetto Bluff, a secluded enclave of 20,000 acres in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. And with plenty of scenic walking paths, a stellar golf course, and tons of Southern-inflected restaurants, you won’t be bored, either. The area is also home to one of the state’s swankiest resorts: Montage Palmetto Bluff. A quick drive from either Savannah (another great couples escape) or Hilton Head, it’s ideal for a romantic getaway; on-site Spa Montage even has a whole section of the menu dedicated to couples. There you can indulge in everything from massages to the intriguingly named Lovers Jubilee, which includes an exfoliation, a soak, and a massage. And while we wouldn’t blame you if you were loath to leave your bed (they’re  very comfortable), make sure you grab dinner at River House, the hotel’s delicious ode to Lowcountry cuisine.

Known for its crystal-clear ocean water, and 16 major islands offering a wealth of outdoor activities, it’s an excellent locale for a romantic vacation that involves equal doses of downtime and heart-pounding adventure. The islands are home to a wide range of properties, but if you’re looking to truly wow your sweetheart, make a beeline for The Ocean Club . For a truly romantic outing, head to Martin's Tavern where JFK proposed to Jackie O.

Courtesy of Secret Bay

Known as the Caribbean’s “nature island,” Dominica may often be mistaken for its more famed neighbor, the Dominican Republic, but the names are really where the similarities end for these two islands. The unmatched beauty of Dominica’s landscape makes it one of the most soothing places to visit for a tropical vacation. And there is no hotel more romantic on the island than Secret Bay , whose all-villa room stock also makes it one of the most luxurious. Here couples can relax in their oversized bathtub for two or take a dip in their personal plunge pool followed by a relaxing hammock nap. And don’t look for menus at dinnertime: Your meals can be customized to your exact preferences. But if you’d rather not be bothered at all? Just stick the red flag outside your villa; the staff will make sure you get plenty of—ahem—alone time

Waikiki, Oahu

There may be nowhere more fun on Oahu than Waikiki. The south shore area of Honolulu is jam-packed with beautiful resorts, plenty of excellent shopping, and beautiful beaches with calm water. But finding a hotel in Waikiki that’s romantic, chic,  and inexpensive was pretty much impossible until the recent opening of the über-charming Wayfinder . Located right in the center of town, the midcentury modern boutique property has rooms at a very budget-friendly rate, along with poolside suites and quirky, colorful decor. Enjoy a romantic night on your room’s private lanai, or take advantage of the hotel’s location for a quick stroll on the nearby beach. Insider tip: The poolside speakeasy, Lost + Found, is opening soon for tasty, tropical-themed cocktails.

Hudson Valley, New York

We all know that the Hudson Valley is having a moment. And unlike some of the popular beach towns close to New York City, this bucolic area just a few hours north of the metropolis has plenty to offer year-round, from skiing in the winter to stunning hiking in the summer. But until this fall, it lacked a true destination-worthy property; the kind of place you splurge on for a special anniversary or romantic weekend away. That all changed with the opening of Wildflower Farms , a peaceful retreat set against the stunning backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge. The rooms here are all freestanding cabins, which makes them perfect for an intimate couples vacation, but there’s plenty to do on site as well, from sumptuous spa Thistle and steamy outdoor hot tubs to stellar farm-to-table cuisine from on-site restaurant Clay. Or, if you're looking for a more urban escape, shack up in an Airbnb in the town of Hudson, where restaurants, bars, and shopping will all be in walking distance.

Asheville, North Carolina

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

This lush city in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is as perfect for couples who like to take in nature (the hiking trails are next-level) as it is for those who prefer to…après-hike. There are as many scenic trails as there are breweries; plus, it has a bustling arts scene. Stay at the historic Omni Park Grove Inn to enjoy sweeping views of the stunning nature Asheville has to offer, or downtown for easy access to all the bars and restaurants—it's a totally walking-friendly city! If your love language is sharing a microbrew, it also has more than 40 fantastic breweries featuring great craft beer, and many offer live music and enough giant pretzels to help you soak up those IPAs.

Ios, Greece

Calio Resort in Ios Greece

While if you're traveling directly from the U.S. to Greece, this destination wouldn't exactly work for a weekend, but we'd be remiss if we didn't include a property that was quite literally built on love in this round-up. For a more laid-back holiday, the Greek island of Ios is known for its stunning remote beaches and archaeological sites. While you can find a vibrant party scene (nothing says romance quite like sharing a few cocktails on the sand and dancing till dawn), there are also ample places to relax. Situated in a mostly untapped area in what was once a hippie haven in the ’70s, the luxury resort Calilo was created with sustainability and privacy in mind. It offers 30 suites that are mindfully designed with features like heart-shaped plunge pools (hey, we said it was romantic), swim-up bars, and sumptuous daybeds. Each element of the property is infused with the love and creativity of the owners. a couple who have been operating Calio since 2019. If you’re lucky enough to catch an encounter with the Greek matriarch of the family-owned property, you might even get some sage words of marital wisdom (“Our philosophy? Create a life you can fall in love with”). This June the tranquil retreat will debut a three-story spa and wellness center and three additional state-of-the-art suites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Iconic row of colorful historic houses downtown Charleston SC.

For a destination that exudes Southern charm, has year-round lovely weather, and is the perfect city to while away the afternoon walking hand in hand on its famously beautiful streets, consider Charleston, where you can almost always snag affordable flights if you're coming from the East Coast. Stay the The Vendue , which is conveniently located near the harbor and the most picturesque Rainbow Row (guests can grab a free bike to help them explore). The hotel also happens to have one of the best rooftops in town to kick your feet up and take in a sunset and views of Charleston's iconic architecture.

Love and Travel

Stories of fervor and friendship, hope and heartbreak—all made indelible by the places where they happened—to make you fall even more madly in love with travel.

From Roman Holiday to Eat Play Love, the best travel narratives are so often linked to romance. And what is true in art is also true in life. For Condé Nast Traveler ’s global Love and Travel package—a collaboration between our seven editions around the world—we explored the relationship between the two and unpacked its many forms. It could be the love of a place, as beautifully captured by Booker Prize nominee Elif Shafak on her deep adoration of Istanbul, a city that shaped her life but somewhere she can no longer return. Or the unexpected real life romantic moments that knock you off your feet when traveling to distant locales, like an engagement on Italy’s Stromboli volcano. We even report on growing destination wedding trends, highlighting the top places to say ‘I Do’ for 2022 and beyond as well as providing useful tips for guests flying in for the vows. If nothing more, let this celebration of love on the road inspire your next adventure with the people closest to you. Who knows what magical moment may happen—or who you may meet—along the way.

Love Travel? Explore these Top Romantic Getaways

What’s better than quality time with someone you love (or at least really, really like)? Quality time with them on vacation!

The bigger question, though: What is the top destination for a romantic getaway? From exotic cities to tropical retreats, active adventures to quiet relaxation, there’s someplace out there that’s perfect for the two of you. You just have to find it.

But don’t kill the romance by stressing about where to go. Seven Corners can help you plan your romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day, your wedding day, or any day with these ideas.

How to Plan a Romantic Getaway

There’s some hot debate about what makes a getaway romantic. Is it the destination? The hotel? The activities?

Like real estate, romance could be all about location, location, location. For some, a tropical oasis is romantic because of the soothing ocean and soft sandy beaches. It doesn’t matter if they’re staying in a five-star hotel or a tent.

For other travelers, luxurious accommodations are what put them in the mood. The hotel could be in their own backyard, but it’s still romantic as long as they get a couple’s spa treatment fit for royalty.

A different approach altogether could be what you do with that special someone. Do you want to lounge around together , not thinking about the kids, finances, or emails? What about a hike and finding hidden natural wonders? Or are you and your sweetheart more excited by the idea of fine dining and a show?

You have some important, and fun, decisions to make. Once you know what you both want out of your getaway, prepare to fall in love with one of these locales.

Best Destinations for Couples

Beach of Maui

Hawaii makes our list in part because it has a little bit of something for everyone. From romantic sunrises 10,000 feet above sea level at Mt. Haelkala’s summit to enjoying couples' massages and pampering at one of the island's many beautiful resorts, there’s no shortage of romantic experiences to enjoy in serene Maui, Hawaii.

Maui makes a perfect dream vacation for you and your partner, with beautiful beaches, hidden waterfalls, and breathtaking landscapes. For the more adventurous types, you can tour the island on horseback, by helicopter, or even sail through some of Maui’s most majestic forests on a zipline.

When you want to branch out from Maui, head for Kauai. The flight will take you less than an hour.

As the island chain's most undeveloped island , Kauai is perfect for couples looking for a little privacy to enjoy each other's company in nature, from gorgeous natural beaches to stunning waterfalls surrounded by thick mountain greenery. Plus, if you live in the western United States, it's only one short plane ride away from the mainland.

2. New York City, New York

Seven Corners writer Melanie Danko wouldn’t let us make a list without including New York City.

“As a former resident of Manhattan, I’ve been exposed to all the romantic (and not so romantic) parts of the city,” she said. “However, if you’re an urbanite at heart, and enjoy the bustle of a big city, there is no better hub than the Big Apple for romantic restaurants, gorgeous venues, and sights to see.”

Book a room at one of the many famous hotels such as the Plaza or Waldorf-Astoria to kick off your romantic stay. Stroll through Central Park, visit the top of the Empire State Building, attend a ballet at Lincoln Center, explore the High Line, and have breakfast at Tiffany’s.

“Yes, it sounds a little bit cliché, and your New Yorker friends will certainly lovingly tease you for the touristy choices,” said Melanie, “but don't let that keep you from enjoying the fairy tale parts of New York.”

3. Saratoga, Wyoming

If NYC is where you go to be seen with your loved one, Saratoga, Wyoming, is where you go when you want to disappear for a few days . With a population of less than 2,000, there isn’t a lot of competition for an open spot at the city’s natural hot springs. You might need them, too, if you decide to take advantage of the area’s hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

When the two of you are ready to refuel, head to town for dinner at one of its unique local restaurants. They might not have any Michelin stars, but if you’re looking to break out of your rut, you’re in luck. An off-the-beaten track Western town might be exactly what you need to rekindle the romance.

4. Mackinac Island, Michigan

One of the most romantic ways people show their appreciation for each other today is by taking a step back from their busy modern lives to be together. On Mackinac (pronounced MA-kuh-naw) Island, travelers can experience this slow-paced living without being interrupted.

There are no cars allowed on the island and many of the buildings are colonial or Victorian styles. The island is such a popular romantic destination that it houses more than 60 wedding vendors .

You can spend your time on the island enjoying the water, eating the famous local fudge, or riding around town in a horse-drawn buggy. It's a perfect place to get away.

5. Rovinj, Croatia

One local tourism site calls Rovinj "the city of romance and art," so don’t be surprised if this picturesque Croatian city puts you in a loving mood. Rovinj (pronounced ro-VEEN) has a long history, both Roman and Croatian, so its churches, colorful buildings, historic streets, and local markets make it perfect for a thoughtful and romantic getaway.

While in Rovinj, you can enjoy numerous cultural and scenic attractions. The seaside town boasts gorgeous sand beaches, thriving nightlife, and breathtaking tourist spots like the church of St. Euphemia, which is a historic cathedral and popular wedding destination that stands tall at the city's center.

Ah, Paris, je t’aime! Paris is affectionately known as the City of Love for a multitude of reasons. Many couples honeymoon in the French capital, partly because of the city's reputation for sparking romance and partly to hear the language of love spoken at the source. Of course, dreamy strolls along the Seine and tight embraces by the Eiffel Tower are two must-do's in France.

Want to experience authentic culture? Try taking an artful trek through the Louvre. Activity seekers might want to try a French cooking class, while couples looking to relax might leave it to the professionals and simply enjoy the country’s famed cuisine at some of the most famous restaurants in the world.

If you’re willing to venture just outside the city, the beautiful Palace of Versailles, where you can wander through the gardens and soak up the luxurious lifestyles of French royalty, is just a train ride away.

The Loire Valley should also be on any romantic traveler’s bucket list. Just two hours away from Paris, this area is known for its quaint villages, historic castles, and top-notch wine and food.

The many chateaus in the area provide travelers with the best wine in the countryside and the scenic vineyards are perfect for photos and a relaxing stroll. One of the local chateaus, Chateau d'Ussé, is even said to be the inspiration for "Sleeping Beauty." It doesn't get more romantic than that.

7. Venice, Italy

This unique and intoxicating city in  Italy  is known for its romance — it gave us Casanova, after all — but have some foresight and plan ahead, particularly during tourist season! The effort is well worth it. Venice is a beautiful place to capture both romantic photos and memories that will last a lifetime.

Take a famed gondola ride and be serenaded as you stroll through the city’s beautiful canal promenades. Catch the view from its many scenic bridges, like the Ponte di Rialto , too. While Venice is bustling and bumping with crowds during the day, which can feel a bit claustrophobic for some, the city transforms into a soothing and relaxing site after nightfall.

8. Riviera Maya, Mexico

Seeking a destination where luxury, privacy, and peace are the cornerstones of the experience? Look no further than the calm, crystal-clear waters in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Known for its beautiful resorts, you and your partner can find exactly what you need to relax in Riviera Maya. Enjoy being pampered at one of the region’s many adults-only resorts like  Catalonia Royal Tulum and bask in the beautiful views across the Caribbean. Even the activities, like a sunset dinner cruise on a catamaran, are relaxing.

Those resorts are a big reason why the Riviera Maya is almost always picked as one of the best places for a destination wedding — and why it’s one of the most affordable places to get hitched abroad

Bora Bora-Bora

9. Bora-Bora

Full of romantic resorts and getaways, the French Polynesian island of Bora-Bora is an exotic yet quiet, natural setting to escape with your sweetheart. Many hotels are built right on the bright and beautiful turquoise waters, so you feel as though you are right in the middle of the ocean.

Bora-Bora is a place to relax, and part of the experience is mellowing out and soaking up the restorative and serene environment in paradise. Be sure to turn your gaze upwards in the evening; you’ll never see stars quite the same way as you can here.

10. Singapore

The best getaway for couples is one that includes things you both want. If you love the city and they prefer to be in nature, head to Singapore.

Gardens by the Bay is in the heart of it all. You’ll see stunning architecture and a surprising variety of plants at the Flower Dome, Cloud Mountain, and Supertree Grove. Visit the beach at Sentosa Island, one of the country’s many museums, or take a boat tour.

If the way to your sweetie’s heart is through their stomach, Singapore could be the one. Singapore’s food scene has been influenced by cultures from around the world, so we’re betting your food-loving partner will love a culinary tour of this romantic destination.

11. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is a popular wedding destination for both Japanese and international travelers. As the cultural and historical center of Japan , Kyoto encapsulates, all in one place, a lot of what makes Japan beautiful.

The city is full of temples, shrines, and traditional Japanese gardens, all of which are gorgeous and romantic places to visit even if you're not getting married there. And the hospitality industry in Kyoto provides a memorable experience for anyone — from geisha entertainment to small, traditional ryokan inns.

Kyoto is surrounded by natural beauty, so many travelers decide to visit during the spring cherry blossom season or to see foliage in the fall to experience the colors of the region. However, Kyoto offers amazing culture and scenery any time of the year.

My Love for Travelling: 100 Reasons I Love to Travel

I love travelling because I get to…

1.   Explore New Countries (the #1 Reason Why I Love Traveling!)

Seeing new places is the number one reason to travel!

You get to see new parts of the world. You realise very quickly how much is out there, and how unique each new place can be. I want to travel to every country in the world!

2.   Experience New Cultures

I love to travel and experience new cultures.

The values, ideals, history, and art of each new place you go is always a unique and intoxicating shock to the system.

3.   Experience New Ways of Life

Go travelling and understand how your way of doing things isn’t necessarily the right way of doing things! You get to see how other people go about their lives.

4.   Meet New & Different People

Why do people like to travel?

One reason is because of the people you meet on the road. Strangers become best friends very quickly. You hang out with people from all different countries and walks of life and get on amazingly all the same.

5.   Meet the Locals

It’s easy to only spend time with travellers when you’re on the road. But meeting and interacting with the locals is always a highlight. This is how you really start to learn about a country- by talking and sharing with local people.

6.   Have Travel Romances & Relationships

Something about travel lends itself to relationships! Remember, you’re meeting masses of likeminded people. Statistically speaking, you’re bound to fancy at least one of them…

7.   Eat New & Exotic Foods

Oh man, the food. This is reason enough to explore new countries! You get to eat real, fresh, local food. It’s often stupidly cheap and tastes like 5* cuisine.

8.   Witness Incredible & Diverse Beauty

This would be one answer I’d give somebody who asked me ‘why do you like travelling so much?’:

You see the world and all of its immense beauty.

It’s in the landscapes, the scenery, the atmosphere, the wildlife, the history, the people…Going to new places confronts you with beauty you’d only ever seen on TV before.

9.   Climb Mountains

On to some of the practical joys of travelling. Climbing mountains is number 1. It depends where you are, obviously, but getting outside and climbing a mountain is always a fun, challenging thing to do. It’s also a prime way to witness that beauty I mentioned first-hand.

10.   Swim in Oceans

Being next to water is my happy place. You can’t beat swimming in crystal clear, warm and tropical turquoise waters. Again, it’s more beauty to be enjoyed.

loveoftravel-1798462

I love travelling. You get to spend time in some of the most beautiful places in the world, like this beach in Thailand.

11.   Laze on Golden Beaches

Where there’s tropical water there’s almost always a sandy beach to laze on after a swim. It’s the picture of paradise, and you get to be there at its centre.

That idea probably explains peoples’ love of travel better than any other!

12.   Bathe in Waterfalls

You’ll almost certainly get to see your fair share of waterfalls while travelling! Ducking your head under and having a natural power shower is always amazing.

13.   Explore Ancient Ruins & Temples

Do you like to travel? Don’t know yet? Well, you’re sure to love traveling if you’re a history buff.

It’s hard not to feel in awe when you step foot through ancient ruins and temples. You know people were there, exactly where you’re standing, thousands of years before you. It’s very very cool.

14.   See Historic Monuments

Same goes for famous monuments (I’m thinking things like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Tower of London, and the Golden Gate Bridge…etc). You set foot upon buildings and structures that are famous around the world.

15.   Experience New (& Sometimes Ancient) Art

The other day I went for a walk to see some Aboriginal artwork.

There were children’s handprints made of red ochre laid upon the rock, which had been made thousands of years earlier. It was genuinely awesome to see. Travel does that. You see the art (new and old) of current and ancient civilisations.

I think it’s a key reason that, as people, we love to travel.

16.   Experience Foreign Architecture

Modern global cities aside, you get to see the unique architecture styles of different countries. Some places are renowned for their architecture. This isn’t my favourite part of travelling, but it’s still cool to see the buildings of other places (past and present).

17.   See Wonders of the World (a Major Love of Travel for Many People)

Some parts of the world just shouldn’t be missed. Iconic places like the Grand Canyon and Machu Picchu are genuine world wonders that’d surely blow your mind.

18.   See Insane Natural Phenomena

The natural world boasts some crazy stuff to see. Things like the northern lights are high up on my bucket list. Going travelling puts you in front of startling displays of nature.

19.   See Crazy Wildlife

Same goes with wildlife. I was born and raised in cities. The most interesting wildlife I saw (outside of zoos) were squirrels and foxes! There’s always cool wildlife to see close to home. But it’s always special to see exotic animals in otherworldly environments on foreign shores.

20.   See Things with Your Own Eyes

One of the greatest parts of travel, for me, is just seeing things first hand. You aren’t seeing an edited version of events via screen. You aren’t hearing about it and getting glimpses of it through other people. No, you’re actually there in the thick of it.

ienjoytraveling-4228762

I think seeing things with your own eyes is another reason why we love to travel.

21.   Get Out of Your Bubble

Life can seem like a bubble. You see the same people, do the same things, and spend time in the same places…It’s easy to live the same routine day in and day out for years. Travel helps you step outside of that. You realise there’s far more out there to see and do.

22.   Realize Your Way Isn’t Necessarily the Right Way

I think this one stems from meeting new people, stepping out of your bubble and experiencing new ways of life. All three factors interact and deliver the obvious conclusion that you way of walking through life isn’t necessarily the only way to do it.

You learn from others, try new things, and develop personally as a result.

23.   It Isn’t an Office

My tongue is firmly in my cheek for this one. But, let’s face it, anything is better than an office, right? It is for me, anyway. Life can get boring. It’s easy to get trapped.

I like travelling because it breaks those chains and pushes you into new and exciting situations.

24.   Have an Adventure

On that note: travel and adventure go hand in hand. When I was younger this is what I dreamed about. I wanted to go exploring and adventuring around the world. Travel is a natural part of that process.

25.   Test Yourself

It isn’t always easy, though. In fact, it’s sometimes exceptionally tough. It’s tiring, lonely, and full over discomfort all around. You’re pushed out of your comfort zone a lot.

That’s no bad thing, though. Life can get very cushy. Suffering a little bit is a great tool for growth.

26.   Do Something Different

This is another big one for me and others. We love travelling because we want to live an extra-ordinary life. I don’t want to do the same old thing over and over again, if I can help it.

It’s the whole:

‘It isn’t the years in the life, but the life in the years, that counts’

I want to look back on my time and feel as if I’ve really lived. I love travelling around the world because it makes me feel like I’m doing exactly that.

27.   Try New Diets

I’ve already mentioned the exotic foods you’ll try. This one’s a bit different, though. Depending on where you are, you may have to switch up your diet entirely.

For example, when I was in Sri Lanka I ate a vegetarian diet because that’s all that was served in my homestay. Now, in Australia, I’m travelling with a vegan, so I’ve been eating neither meat nor dairy for 6 months or so!

28.   Learn More about Yourself

It’s hard to go travelling and not discover stuff about who you are. This is actually one reason I wanted to travel in the first place.

Everything about it forces self-discovery upon you. You’re fending for yourself thousands of miles from home. It’s natural to be confronted with both the good and bad aspects of your character.

29.   Discover Hidden Talents

You’ll find yourself doing things you would never have imagined possible. You might discover a knack for negotiating, riding a scooter, living with few possessions, cooking for yourself, meditating, and so on.

30.   Figure Out What You Want from Life

Again, more learning. This time it’s about your future and where you see yourself. I think this is a natural outcome of learning more about who you are. What you want to do ends up as a natural by-product of that. You might even surprise yourself with what you decide.

whydopeopletravel-9997106

Why do people like to travel? Lazing in hammocks on a tropical beaches is one compelling reason I can think of! It’s definitely one reason I enjoy travel.

31.   Realize Your Issues

There’s nothing quite like travel for highlighting your issues, insecurities, and neuroses. Again, that’s no bad thing. Knowing about them is the first step in dealing with them.

32.   Overcome Your Issues

Following on from the last point. Travelling can offer a guiding hand to help you handle the personal issues you discover. It gives you time to contemplate, situations to overcome, and lovely new friends to support you.

33.   Challenge Your Fears

I jumped out of a plane in New Zealand a few years ago. I hate heights. I still hate heights, but I’m far better with them now. That’s just one example of how travelling with confront you with scary situations for you to overcome.

34.   Challenge Your Assumptions

All of us are full of hidden prejudices, beliefs and assumptions. Travel can expose and overturn them.

As a very basic example, you might assume that poor people are unhappy. Seeing poverty in third world countries can instantly challenge that.

35.   Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

I think I’ve already mentioned this in another point. However, it’s worth re-emphasising. Travel is tough! Unless you’re just lying on a beach somewhere, you’ll be tired, uncomfortable, and challenged at every turn.

36.   Try New Things

I love travelling and exploring because you do new stuff every single day. It’s almost impossible not to. Again, that’s unless you spend your days lying on a beach. Don’t do that (too much).

37.   Make Incredible Memories (a Major Reason I Enjoy Traveling So Much)

Everything I’ve mentioned so far (and will go on to talk about) helps you create incredible memories to relive throughout your life.

It’s said that all we are is a system of memories anyway. If that’s the case, then I’d rather be a system of awesome and adventurous ones.

38.   Gain New Stories to Tell

All those new memories deserve to be shared. You’ll never be short of a story when you’ve been travelling.

39.   Experience Freedom

I hate feeling stifled and restricted. I’ve realised more recently that I also like being my own boss. Why do people travel? Because it’s the ultimate freedom. You decide what you do and where you go at all times.

40.   Experience Independence

For me, independence goes hand in hand with freedom. I’m not reliant on anyone else. If I wish it, it’s literally me versus the world. That can be a scary prospect at times, but it’s liberating too.

cathedralcovesilhouette-min-2936226

Wondering why people travel? I think it’s partly to experience true freedom and independence. I think it’s a major reason you’ll love to travel as well.

41.   Experience True Happiness

Why travel? So you can feel happy!

I’ve never felt happier than I have on the road. Everything I’ve just talked about lends itself to true, deep and long-lasting happiness.

42.   Experience True Human Kindness

You come across some beautiful people on the road. You know, the ones that make you feel downright self-centred by the simple virtue of their kindness and generosity?

You’ll find yourself in a fair few pickles on the road. You’ll also come across your fair share of awesome people willing to lend a hand, asking nothing in return.

43.   Become More Aware of Tricksters

That said, there are also a fair few people who’ll try and take you for a ride. These people aren’t as nice, but they still help out in their own way.

You learn who you can and can’t believe, and to trust in your gut. Those are two invaluable life lessons.

44.   Become More Assertive

Travelling can teach you to be more assertive in yourself. There may be times when people and situations make you feel uncomfortable. There may, in worst case scenarios, be a level of danger as well.

Assertiveness is a useful trait that enables you stand up for yourself and not bow to peer pressure. Travel can help you find it within yourself.

45.   Enjoy Off the Beaten Track Experiences

Sticking to the tourist trail can be awesome. But it’s when you step away from it that the magic can really happen. Away from the hubbub and fuss, you stumble across moments in time that you’ll never forget.

46.   Find Hidden Gems

These off the beaten track experiences also have a habit of exposing hidden gems. Tourist trails are, by definition, popular. That’s where everyone goes.

But it’s the back alleys, lost temples, and forgotten hot spots where the magic really lays. Discovering these hidden gems is another reason everybody loves travel so much!

This is where interacting with the locals can be so helpful. They’ll tell you about the lesser known places to explore.

47.   Appreciate Home Comforts More

It’s insanely easy to take home comforts for granted. Travelling basically takes you away from them all! Wave goodbye to your bed, your mum’s cooking, constant WiFi connectivity, and, often, quality infrastructure. You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone!

48.   Appreciate Friends & Family More

The same goes for the people back home. In the inevitable moments of homesickness, you’re sure to feel their absence. You’ll realise how lucky you are to have these people who you in your life.

49.   Appreciate Modern Technology

You’ll value the technological side of things as well. That’s particularly true when there’s no internet where you are. However, when it is available, you’ll appreciate just how incredible modern tech has become.

Take the ability to instantly connect with friends and family, for example. It’s genuinely amazing. You can be on the other side of the world and see their faces as if they were right there.

50.   Appreciate the Simple Things

A big reason for the trip is that travel strips you back to basics. With just a backpack, you can’t take all of your home comforts with you!

Suddenly, the simple things make a big difference. It’s having the time to just sit and do what you want. It’s the freedom to explore. It’s the appreciation of having a hostel bed to sleep in.

boatboyportrait-min-3233750

Spending time with the local people of a country is always a highlight of the trip. It’s another reason I love travelling and exploring new places.

51.   Realize Your Good Fortune

If you hadn’t realized, I like travelling a lot!

Partly because all that newfound appreciation helps you understand how good you have it normally. Travelling highlights how lucky you are in comparison to the plight of others.

52.   Witness World Problems First Hand

One way in which that happens is by revealing the levels of hardship other people live with. Head to poverty-stricken countries and look around.

People have nothing to their name, living in the dirt and doing what they can to get by…And they’re often the happiest people in the world! It can be massively eye opening.

53.   Expand World Knowledge

Stepping out of your bubble will expose you to new situations and information. Your understanding of the world, and the good and bad that happens, grows all the time.

54.   Learn History of New Countries

Part of that knowledge comes from learning of a new destination’ history.

For example, I went to Cambodia a couple of years ago and found myself inundated with newfound insight into the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime. The same thing can happen anywhere you go.

Thankfully, it isn’t always so depressing! Whatever the case, learning a country’s history is key to understanding its culture and politics. It sheds light on the context that you’re travelling through.

55.   Get Totally Lost

Getting lost has a bad reputation. I’m not a massive fan of it myself.

However, (if you can avoid the bad parts of town) it’s a sure-fire way to get to know a new place better and discover those hidden gems I mentioned earlier.

Equally, thank to mobile phones, it’s often difficult to get truly lost these days anyway.

56.   Find Yourself

There’s more ways than one to feel lost. And, as the classic travel cliché goes, hitting the road is a great way to find yourself in the process.

Remember, you’ll come away having overcome challenges and discovered more about yourself and what you want from life. I’m pretty sure that’s the definition of finding yourself!

57.   Find New Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is another natural by-product of everything you do and overcome on the road. It’s hard not to feel more confidence in your abilities and in yourself.

58.   Mature as a Person

Same goes with maturing.

I always remember getting to university at age 18 and meeting people who’d taken a gap year to go travelling. They were only a year older than me, but they seemed 50 to 10 years more worldly and mature.

Again, I think it’s a natural part of travelling. It forces you to mature.

59.   Become a Better Person All-Around

Everything about travel has the potential to make you a better person. Maturity, self-confidence, self-knowledge, world-knowledge, greater awareness, challenged assumptions…it all adds up to you becoming a better human being.

60.   Time to Relax (Another Major Reason I Like to Travel a Lot)

Travel gives you time to yourself. You might not have had that luxury in years. You might have been working hard-out for half a decade or longer. That’s what society tells us we should do.

Travel gives you a breather. You get to chill out for a change, with nobody breathing down your neck to meet targets, get better grades, and/or step your game up, and so on.

gwenfloatsea-min-5086724

Pictures like this sum up why travel is just outrageously awesome. How could you not love to travel?!

61.   Time to Party

Of course, there’s always time to party as well.

Almost everyone who travels is sure to have their fair share of nights out. Beach parties, street parties, hostel parties, pool parties and house parties are all common.

And there’s no Sunday evening blues to dread either!

62.   Time to Do Anything You Want

You’ll never be short of something to do when you travel.

In fact, sometimes there’s too much to see and experience. In a bid not to miss out on anything, it becomes easy to burnout.

63.   Realise the World’s a Big Place

To travel to one new country is to realise how many others there are to experience as well.

This aspect of travel can actually put people off! I’ve had conversations where someone has argued the lack of point of travelling because there’s always more of it to do! You’ll never see it all, so you may as well stay in one place.

I disagree, obviously. You definitely realise how much there is to see though. I take it as encouragement to keep exploring.

64.   Realise the World’s a Small Place

The world can seem enormous and tiny in the same instance. Go travelling and you’ll almost always meet someone you have a vague (or close) connection to.

You realise how you’re never truly too far disconnected from home.

65.   Learn to Budget

I’d never budgeted before I first went travelling. And it showed! I spent thousands of pounds in the first few months. I remember spending, in 6 weeks on the road what would now last me 6 months!

It was awesome! But it wasn’t exactly sensible from a financial standpoint. Travelling definitely teaches you how to be better with money.

66.   Learn to Pack Lightly

The same goes with packing. The first time I travelled I thought I’d packed minimally, but I could hardly pick up my bag it was so heavy. You learn as you go, though.

By the end of a trip, you’re a packing pro, carrying only as much as you need.

67.   Learn to Live Simply

You learn to value the simple things on the road; you learn to live a simpler life too.

Travelling made me see how little I need to be happy. I realised I didn’t actually gain much from having lots of stuff. My favourite times on the road have been marked by living as simply as possible.

68.   Learn Possessions Aren’t Everything

Going travelling can highlight our reliance on material stuff. You realize you don’t need it. Throwing it out can lead to greater life satisfaction.

69.   Learn Money Isn’t Everything

The same goes for money. The happiest people you tend to meet on the road (especially in terms of locals) are those with the least money. Sure, you definitely need some of it to survive and thrive.

But it is by no means the be-all and end-all.

70.   Learn West Isn’t (Necessarily) Best

Going travelling reveals some of the atrocities western countries have been responsible for overseas.

I love this part of travel because, again, it’s about challenging your assumptions and learning how other countries perceive your own.

You start to understand more about the role your home country has played around the world and the impact it has had (both good and bad).

mehammocksilhouette-min-6668129

You don’t need much to be happy. Travelling can take you back to basics. Sometimes it’s the simple pleasures that are best. I like travelling for reminding me of that fact.

71.   Learn the Value of Good Company

In my experience, feeling lonely at times is inevitable when you’re travelling. You realise the importance of having kind-hearted, loving people in your life!

72.   Learn to be Less Judgmental of Yourself

I’m naturally quite critical of myself, and am quick to judge myself harshly as a result. I like travelling because it seems to help me cut this out of my life. I feel more comfortable and happy with who I am.

73.   Learn to be Less Judgmental of Others

The same goes for other people. I think most people tend to judge each other. It seems natural. However, being too quick to judge is never good.

Travel surrounds you with people you might never otherwise hang out with. It challenges stereotypes and helps you see people for who they really are.

74.   Learn that Strangers Aren’t (Always) Scary

We’re taught as children never to talk to strangers.

You can understand why, but it creates a general idea of distrust when it comes to people you don’t know. You’ll be around strangers at all times when you travel!

You realize the vast majority are lovely, friendly and helpful.

75.   Learn When Strangers Are Scary (& How to Discern)

Of course, you always get the occasional bad egg. Remember, travel helps you become more assertive, and to trust your gut.

Similarly, it can give you greater insight into the people you want to spend time with, and who you should avoid.

76.   Learn How Capable You Are

Travel helps people to flourish. They go into the trip as a caterpillar, and emerge as a beautiful butterfly! You realize you can do far more than you first thought.

77.   Learn New Skills

Travelling provides its own sort of education. Remember, you’ll be discovering hidden talents! Part of that comes from learning entirely new skills.

78.   Learn New Languages

Wherever you’re travelling, it’s always good to learn some words of the local language. It helps you connect with the locals, who’ll appreciate the effort (even if you just know how to say thank you!).

You may never become fluent, but you’ll definitely get an introduction to new world languages.

79.   Learn to Cook

Never cooked for yourself? Travel’s the time to learn. Unless you want to blow your budget by eating out every meal, then you’ll have to!

Even better, in some countries you can do a cookery course and learn how to make the local dish.

80.   Learn How to Be Alone

This is a big one for most people. Many of us never spend time alone in our daily lives. We go out of our way to surround ourselves with others.

But being alone is crucial to learning about yourself. Constant stimulation obscures how you feel and who you are. Stripping all that away by being alone can be a challenge. Solo travel often forces you into it.

You’ll be going to restaurants alone, exploring monuments alone, and touring cities alones…and so on. Before long you’ll be an expert at being by yourself, and feeling at ease in the process.

wingfishing-min-8852042

Travel teaches you how to be alone. It’s a valuable lesson.

81.   Learn to Take Things Less Seriously

The stresses of day to day life can make anyone highly strung. Things seem serious, and we lose our sense of humour. Travel can provide the time to unwind. You become more relaxed and easy going.

82.   Learn to Let Things Unfold

You also learn to take things as they come. Some things can’t be controlled, and no amount of stressing out will change them.

I think the sheer amount of uncertainty and new experience involved with travelling helps you learn that the hard way! Over time you just stop caring as much and allow things to happen.

83.   Learn the Standard Life Routine Isn’t Obligatory

This one’s big for me. Up until a few years ago I sort of assumed that life had a particular trajectory.

School, uni, job, career. That’s what I saw myself doing. But I’m not sure that’s exactly what I wanted. More than anything, I just couldn’t see outside of that path. I think I’d been fed the idea of that life for so long that it shut me off to alternatives.

Now, having travelled and had a taste of something a bit different, it’s the last thing I want.

84.   Learn You Can Do Whatever You want

In reality, there’s no limit to what you can do. Travel freed my mind up to different possibilities. At a basic level, it made me want to travel more. Sitting at a desk lost its appeal.

85.   Understand the Need to Protect the Planet

I’ve already mentioned how travelling exposes you to how beautiful the world is. You can’t see that beauty and not want to preserve and protect it.

It’s a work in progress for me. I mean, I fly to new countries and just bought an old van to drive around in. That’s hardly environmentally friendly.

But I’m far more aware of my actions now, which has to be worth something. I’m also taking steps in other areas of life to offset and reduce my personal impact.

86.   Get a Break from Technology

So, travel makes you realize how awesome modern technology is.

However, it can also be a great excuse to get a detox from it. When was the last time you spent an entire day without looking at a screen? Like me, I’m guessing it was a while ago.

Travel gives you a rest from it and reminds you there’s more to life than what’s on your mobile.

87.   Get a Much Needed Rest

Life can be hard. It’s full of ups and downs and stress and strife. It can feel non-stop.

Travel, at a very basic level, can offer a perfect break. That newfound time on your hands gets put to good use: you get a chance to chill out and rest up.

88.   Get Through Personal Hardship

Everyone goes through tough times in life. Life throws everybody their fair share of lemons. Some people get bombarded more than others.

I’ve been very lucky in my life. However, when I have experienced hardship, travel has been the best antidote I could have asked for.

It gives you time to breathe, process, have fun, and meet new people. It drags you out of yourself and back into the world.

89.   Improve Your Career Prospects

Many people worry that travel will set them back in terms of their career.

And it can! You’ll probably be behind your mates in career-terms when you get back home. However, you’ll have had an epic experience in the interim.

Even better, it can also help. Travel is increasingly common. Employers know that and realise how beneficial it can be in developing you as a potential employee.

Overall, don’t stress about the travel-sized gap on your CV.

90.   Spend Time Outdoors

Time in nature is literally good for your health. It’s been proven scientifically. You’ll almost certainly spend a fair amount of time outside in nature when you travel.

arthurspasspeakview-min-9239339

Travel gets you out into the great outdoors. Check out those views! You gotta love it.

91.   Chase the Sun

Here’s another big reason why I love travel. It takes me to the sunshine! I don’t do well with bad weather (despite being a Brit). Being in warm and sunny climates immediately raises my mood.

92.   Sleep in Novel Places

This one’s a little out of left field.

However, go travelling and you may find yourself sleeping in some funny old places. A bad night’s sleep isn’t necessarily something I love about travel. But the stories behind them are always fun.

93.   Live in Novel Places

Travel takes you to the farthest corners of the globe and some of the weirdest and most wonderful experiences you’ll ever have.

You end up living a totally different life, in entirely new places. And it’s awesome.

94.   Get Comfortable Being Dirty

I feel very clean when I’m not travelling!

Obviously you don’t have to live dirtily when you’re on the road.

However, there may be times when you don’t have access to a shower, and you’ve been on the move for a while. You start to realise that a bit of dirt and grime isn’t the end of the world.

95.   Do Things You Never Thought Possible

You’ll find yourself in genuinely mind-blowing situations when you travel.

I remember going caving in New Zealand a few years ago. At one point we were deep underground in the pitch black, floating on rubber rings down a river, staring upwards at luminescent glow worms.

It was genuinely surreal- one of those moments you really have to pinch yourself to make sure it’s actually happening.

You’ll find yourself in similar situations if you decide to travel as well.

96.   Tick Things off Your Bucket List

Got a bucket list of things you have to do before you die?

Travel will help you tick items off it. You don’t even need an actual list of things you want to do.

At the end of your travels you’ll look back on the experience and realize how many incredible things you’ve done, and how you’ve contributed to your life.

Writing your bucket list? Here are 50 simple ideas to help out.

97.   Feel Inspired

It’s difficult to travel and not be inspired by the experience. You step outside your day to day and realize how much more is possible.

The people, the sights, the experiences, the memories…there’s almost always something inspirational to enjoy.

Want to feel inspired? This guide should help you find inspiration in your life.

98.   Feel Meaning and Purpose

Meaning and purpose are central to living a happy life. Without them, everything can start to feel pointless.

Travelling can imbue life with both. Or, perhaps, the question of ‘what’s the point?’ just matters less when you’re doing such incredible things. Either way, life feels that bit more fulfilling.

99.   Feel More Connected

Travel creates a sense of connection.

You’re there, present, and living it. You feel connected with the moment, connected to the rest of the world, connected within yourself, connected with other people.

You feel less of a lonely individual, and part of something greater than yourself.

100.   Feel Care Free

Last but not least: a liberating sense of being totally care-free.

Life can be stressful! How often do you feel overwhelmed and anxious about one thing or another? When was the last time you felt truly free of worries?

Holidays are good, but you know you’ll be back to reality in a few days.

Travel, by contrast, can be truly restorative. Worries and concerns don’t just disappear; travel comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations. However, it’s totally different in nature.

In general, life on the road can be entirely care-free, and lived with true, unadulterated abandon. And I love it.

coddiwompjump-min-1805885

Travelling helps you feel totally care free. I’ve never been happier than I have on the road.

Remember My Reasons for Travelling & Why I Love Travel!

As you can tell, I love travelling…a lot! I hope those 100 reasons for travel justify why that’s the case, and why I think you’ll love to travel too.

For me, more often than not, my love for travelling boils down to three little words: life is short.

It’s clichéd, for sure. But it’s also fact. Pretending it isn’t is a recipe for wasted time. If you’re determined to make the most of your time, then I think travel’s the perfect way to do it.

I’d love to know if any of the reasons I love travelling sound particularly compelling!?

how long do u like to go travelling for. I want to travel the world but im still unsure hoe long i want to go for

Hey Jim! I actually travel full-time these days as I work online, which works great for me. I think it’s different for everyone though- for some people, a few weeks does the trick; for others, it might be 3, 6 or 12 months that’s best. If you’ve not travelled before, then why not test the waters? Buy yourself a one-way ticket somewhere (with enough cash in the bank for a return flight at some point in future) and see what you think. Keep on going until you’re ready to come home! Hope that helps, and enjoy the travels, wherever and whenever you go (and for however long!) 🙂

Five tips for a romantic date in Moscow

  • #Special Interest

Big city night lights, posh restaurants, quiet walks in isolated corners— there are plenty of ideas on giving a romantic touch to your trip. However, what specific things can a loving couple do in Moscow?

01 Ostankino TV Tower

love travel places

If you are not afraid of heights, then the highest possible date in Moscow is waiting for you. An unforgettable date can be organized in Ostankino TV tower, with its 337 meters high observation deck and the restaurant with the 360 degrees view dimension. While you are dining, the restaurant floor is going in a circle, and you can watch Moscow from the bird’s eye view and all sides of the TV Tower. If you prepare your date in advance, you can order a tour of the Ostankino Tower , a photoshoot, and a unique table decoration.

Please, note that you need to have a passport or any other identity verification document to enter the Tower and the restaurant.

02 Troyka Riding in Kolomenskoye

love travel places

Have you ever heard of Troyka riding, the very ancient Russian fun? Troyka is simply three horses harnessed in a cart. However, this old-fashioned vehicle is still a national symbol: being able to develop a speed up to 50 kilometers per hour, it reminds of Russian wild nature.

If you want to try this experience, the best place to do this is Kolomenskoye Park , the former Tzar residence with a great atmosphere of ancient Russia with excellent examples of wooden architecture.

03 Planetarium

love travel places

The Planetarium is the best place to watch the night sky and stars in the daytime — and this is always a pleasure for the loving hearts. Moscow Planetarium, located near Barrikadnaya Metro station, offers standard star performance and welcomes its interactive science museum.

After the Planetarium, you can also visit the Moscow Zoo, located nearby.

04 Picturesque views: Izmailovo and Kuskovo

love travel places

If you a fan of nature and prefer long peaceful walks to restaurants or active tours, then the parks of Moscow are for you! Sure they look their best during summer and early autumn but are open all year round for visitors from all over the world.

What do you get there? Firstly, of course, the atmosphere of genuine Russian nature perfectly suits for strolling around and capturing tender moments. If the weather is warm, nothing better can be organized than a picnic in one of these places; in addition, both parks have boat stations, where you can rent a small boat for an hour or so.

What is more, both places have their gem. Thus, Izmailovo Park is located close to the Izmailovo market and Izmailovo Kremlin; both places are worth visiting, too, if you want to purchase worthy souvenirs or make colorful selfies with wooden buildings created in 16-17 centuries Russian architecture style. In Kuskovo , you can be acquainted with the palace and pavilions of the 18th century, making the place look more solemn.

05 Boat trip: Radisson Cruise Flotilla

love travel places

The main advantage of using the Radisson boats for a cruise of the Moscow river is that they operate worldwide. They offer tickets for different classes: just a seat in the 2nd class or a table in the 1st class where you can order dinner, drink a glass of champagne, and enjoy live music on board! There are daily departures in the morning and the afternoon from the Ukraine Hotel and Gorky Park.

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO TRAVEL?

Worldwide thoughts and quotes on the benefits and beauty of travel.

Carolyn Canetti

Carolyn Canetti

I polled my friends and family from all over the world on why they love to travel. Here are their responses:

"I think the exposure to new places and new people can be really reviving personally and also eye opening to see how other people live. To see how life functions, whether human or natural life, in other places is really humbling. It's easy to have your status quo at home, but as soon as you're in a new place - all bets are off. You can do anything, and are so willing to try new stuff to push your own boundaries purely because you're in a new place."

"I love to travel because not only is it the ultimate adventure but it also exposes you to new types of people, different ways of living, and opens up your mind. I just like to walk around in beautiful places that resemble the shire from Lord of the Rings while exploring new culinary terrains."

-Matty G "Traveling reminds me that my life isn't the only one I could live and that in the grand scheme of things, I'm pretty unimportant to this world we live in. People get so caught up in their daily lives and forget that they can be somewhere or someone else tomorrow if they'd like. There are no limits in the grand scheme of things except the ones we create for ourselves. Traveling helps make sure I don't forget that ."

"Travel puts me out of my comfort zone and inherently breeds challenge . I'm a firm believer that challenge leads to curiosity, maturity and growth."

"I use travel as an escape from daily life. Having future trips already planned brings me joy and gives me something to look forward to. I've never regretted a single trip I've taken ."

"I love to travel for a few reasons. First, you automatically become a naturally curious being . You are a traveler, tourist, backpacker, etc and even the most basic thing on a trip becomes an adventure - like catching a bus between cities. Second, you are hyper aware of your surroundings and appreciate the beauty or intrigue of a new land and culture! Third, when I travel and then return home, I see home in a whole new light . For example when I studied abroad in Buenos Aires and came back to NOLA, I realized there was so much more exploring of my own city that I needed to do and I was excited and motivated to do that, whereas before I was stuck in my daily routine."

"I travel to eat all the foods ."

love travel places

" I love figuring things out . I love seeing new people."

"When I think about travel, I mostly think about traveling solo. I love it because it displaces you. In a state displacement you experience wonder, discovery, awe, discomfort. If you go with an open mind, you discover things about yourself, about others and about the world you would have not learned otherwise. It opens you up, turns on new lights so you can see and experience the world in a new way- even when you go 'home'. We get so involved in our current environments and lives - the chance to step out and explore and experience elsewhere gives us perspective and often provides new lenses with which we can see and think about who we are , what are doing with our lives and what we care about. The whole experience is filled with all these beautiful and crazy colors and feelings."

"I like the discovery part of it... I like to explore new things, new places, new views, new people, new everything...T here are many ways to explore new things, but traveling is the most satisfactory as it is the most comprehensive way as it encompasses many elements from views to people to foods etc. I also like getting away from the routine, and the daily chores and daily work and daily life and have a kind of a break from reality if you want... On the other hand with all the new crazy security issues, travel is not so "free spirited" anymore, as now one has to keep in mind and be aware and even worry a bit when traveling, when in the past the idea of travel was to get away from worries."

"I like to travel so that I don't have to text anyone for a week."

" It's fun ."

"People. Whether it's hiking a scenic overlook with old friends, or eating flatbread on the side of the road with new friends, you forge a special bond when you're both out of your elements. Every moment is an adventure."

"I love to travel to experience things and places that are completely unknown or different to me."

"Traveling somewhere new is an opportunity to really engage in being lost. You have to pay close attention to figure out what's your place, and how to act, and how to be respectful. You start to question and reflect on your own assumptions and behavior. You have a chance to represent your home , which both makes you consider other people's perspectives and better articulate who it is you want to be putting forth into the world." -Ella

love travel places

"I love to travel for so many reasons. There is nothing like getting off a plane/train/bus and seeing the beauty of a new place for the first time . Sometimes, the outer beauty is overwhelming and I have to stand still and let time stop to try to take it all in at once. Sometimes, the beauty is less about aesthetics and more about that first conversation with a local when I am pleasantly overwhelmed by their openness and rich culture. I love walking several miles each day in a new place and thinking about who has walked there before me. It can be startling to realize that I do not know a single person for miles and miles, but I think that's part of what keeps it exciting. I feel the most 'alive' when I am exploring ."

"I love to travel to get away from the chaos of life, when I come home I've gained more perspective ."

"The world is full of interesting people, beautiful landscapes, incredible food, amazing music, and different cultures, and life is more interesting when you make time to enjoy as much of it as you can! We are lucky enough to have the ability to access all of this relatively easily, it's our responsibility to travel as much as possible and learn from other cultures."

“Because everything unimportant falls away - all the little stresses of New York. And I can just be. And learn. And see. And really truly lose myself in all the new things in a new different place.”

"I like getting out of the every day routine of things - it helps me get perspective on ma lyfe. And I like seeing how other people live and meeting the Matt Goodmans of other countries ."

“I love to travel because there's so much I haven't seen and every time I go somewhere new I learn about people and places I never thought about before and that's pretty neat. You can only see so much in a photo you gotta go live it to experience .”

“I love that a totally new perspective makes me reconsider my priorities and allows me to kind of recenter myself. Also food is delicious and I'm a sucker for taking pictures of things I've never seen.”

love travel places

“I love moving away from the tourist trail and exploring where the locals eat, drink, dance and live. I find it so much more meaningful to see and immerse myself in that side of a city. It's nice to get away from the Aussie accents, English speakers and cameras, and just wander around and explore, and imagine yourself living there . I love everything about traveling, particularly trying new cuisines. I despise even the thought of eating at a Western fast food restaurant, when you have so many incredible and new foods to try. Even the experiences that are frustrating or difficult at the time, end up being some of the most memorable, and some of the most hilarious stories to share and reminisce about.”

“I love to travel because it excites me and energizes me ! It takes me out of my comfort zone and exposes me to cultures, landscapes and people that I find so inspiring.”

“Mainly to meet, experience, and learn from different people, for those wild unimaginable moments that just fall into place and make you question if your dreaming , for that crazy sensation of not knowing what's next, and overall for self reflection and personal growth.”

“I'd say I love to travel because I don't want to wake up one day when I'm 80 years old and say to myself I wish I had done that .”

"I like the feeling of adventure, like anything could happen ."

“ My first trip to Kenya made me examine and question how I live and what is important . It made (and continues to make) me wonder who is ‘happier’. I see such discrepancies between my life and others, although I live in a nice apartment with all of the ‘things’ I can desire - my life might be lonelier without a small community support system. So which life is ‘better’? This existential question is made sharper to me by traveling to countries whose cultures, customs and socioeconomic levels are different from what I grew up with and still. I also enjoy learning about the history of other cultures, why heritage and values result in suspicion to refugees and foreigners. This is a wake-up to me that not everyone (not most people) embraces diversity in every way . Much as I like to travel, I love to come home though.”

love travel places

"I love the smells, tastes, sounds, sights and feelings of a place - new or familiar. I think my memories are closely interwoven with the scent of an event or a period of time so being able to catalogue a place by smell helps me remember the feeling of being there. Also food. Hooray for all the food and recipes that have been passed through generations, families and communities . I also love the feeling that I am somewhere removed from my everyday experience. It is exciting and relieving all at the same time. I love that traveling is not just one thing. Traveling can be fun. It can be invigorating, enlightening, powerful, relaxing, overwhelming, emotional or even a struggle.."

"The anticipate of travel is always the first exciting thing for me. The sheer idea of going somewhere far away. It's part coping mechanism, part restlessness, and part soul seeking. I love witnessing the way different people and cultures move through the world - how they interact with each other, love each other, how they make art, how they define community, what they value, what they fight for, and what they believe in spiritually . With every new encounter, you experience a new part of yourself."

“I love to travel because it takes me out of my comfort zone and I am always learning something new about myself and about that place each day I'm there.”

"For me it's meeting new people and learning about their different way of life - culture, traditions, food. And seeing what makes each place so unique ! Love finding a spot with a view that I'll always remember about that specific trip."

"I love the anticipation of a trip. Looking ahead, saving, planning, researching, all make the trip a greater adventure. I love the sense involved in experiences a new place, especially the taste. Every trip is magical and I feel fortunate; free to have wings at this stage in life."

"I can't remember a time when I wasn't dreaming about exploring a far away place. Trying to answer why I love travel is like trying to ask myself why I eat ice cream. I just love it. There's something so magical about getting the chance to live in each new place, surrounded by a new culture of sights, food and people."

love travel places

"I love to see how other cultures eat and dance! Food and music is the best way to interact with people if you can't speak each other's language, and getting involved is the best way to show your appreciation . I also love challenging my own ideas about other cultures. It's so refreshing (and educating) to experience another side to what we see on TV, in movies and online.”

"I like to travel to understand history and learn how others live across the world. And for the food obviously ."

“I love to travel because I love to learn and meet inspiring people. It's important to educate yourself about different cultures and its pretty sweet to learn new skills (even if you pay for something 'tourists' do). Submitting yourself to the unpredictability of travel gives you experiences, some good others bad, that ultimately contribute to your world knowledge - even if it's only becoming a bit more aware of what is around you . Oh, and its fun learning dirty words in different languages.”

“I love to travel because it takes me outside of my culture and privilege and reminds me of great inequities in our world. Travel inspires me to learn more, think more and to better serve our world community. ”

“I rewatched Midnight In Paris last night. So I ask, 'is the age we are living in a golden age?' Certainly if Trump is president then No. But how would we ever know? The path towards the answer is to travel. Traveling allows you to drink with Hemingway, walk the path of Jesus, and gush over Joni Mitchell. I travel so I can debate and discuss this necessary question."

"My favorite part of traveling is being exposed to food, people, places, and things I've never experienced. To get that feeling of the first time is exciting ."

Why I Love Travelling – a personal story about how travel changed my life

Aug 6, 2022 | Feature | 0 comments

accommodation mandurah wa

If you’re still wondering why I love travelling so much, then read on for my personal story about how travel changed my life! It’s hard to imagine where it all began because I wasn’t raised to see the world. But once the floodlights switched on and I had a taste of travel, there was no coming back. Travelling has opened my eyes to new cultures and different ways of life and shown me an endless amount of natural beauty. It has changed me as a person for the better and given me experiences that I will never forget.

There are special memories in life, like when I met my wife for the first time, my kids were born, and we bought our first house and truly felt like adults. But for me, some of my most cherished memories are from my travels. I love the adventure and excitement that comes with planning a trip, not knowing what lies ahead but being confident that it will be amazing.

Hey, not that my wedding day over 16 years ago and the day my kids were born don’t top the list; of course, they do. However, there is something about getting away from every day and exploring our big beautiful world.

From the first time I stepped foot on a plane as a young adult, I was hooked. I loved everything about flying; the anticipation of takeoff, the views from above, and finally touching down at a new destination. The sense of freedom and adventure that comes with travel is unlike anything else. And I knew that I wanted more.

So, why do I love travelling? For me, it’s all about the experiences. Each new place I visit presents an opportunity to learn something new, see things from a different perspective and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Whether watching the sunset over the Himalayas in Nepal, I was hiking the jungle in Borneo or enjoying a coffee in a Bali cafe. While travelling, I will always create memories that I will treasure forever.

Nepal Mountain

The sunrise from Chisapani in Nepal.

Why do I love travelling, and how did it change my life? Let’s go back a bit before I even saw another country outside of Australia. By the end, you’ll understand why I love travelling and how I can’t stop.

Unless a virus takes control of the world, naturally.

I never travelled internationally growing up.

I don’t think I am alone in this because international travel is undoubtedly more convenient in modern times than in my youthful years in the 80s and 90.s. But my family never went on holidays overseas, except for domestic trips to Sydney from Melbourne. That was fine, Sydney was superb, and the memories were strong, especially the beachside area of Manly. Yet, international travel remained a mystery.

However, going overseas was a pipedream growing up. It all changed when I got my first real job and joined the Australian Army.

My first overseas trip came about a deployment in the Army.

On my first overseas trip, I didn’t even have a passport. I didn’t need one getting deployed to another country with the Army, so that’s always a remarkable fact I like to mention from time to time. How is this for a little fun fact?

Anyway, my deployment was peacekeeping in East Timor, and I was there for just three months. It was a fantastic experience and one that changed my life in so many ways that I am forever grateful for.

However, it wasn’t a holiday. Besides being based in the hills of Bobonaro with fantastic views near the Indonesian Border, there wasn’t a lot of time to be a tourist.

Visiting South Korea is when travelling truly opened my eyes.

Okay, my first real trip overseas with an official passport happened in 2005 when I visited Seoul, South Korea, with my Korean girlfriend. Spoiler alert She became my wife, and we’ve been married 16-plus years now, so happy ending and all that.

But this is where I had what I like to call my ‘travel epiphany’. I hadn’t given travel much thought, but being in Korea and seeing the sights of Seoul, exploring the city region and seeing impressive palaces and temples and so forth was genuinely fantastic. I loved it; I was beginning to get the travel bug.

vacation in Seoul

The Gyeongbokgung Palace must be on your list during your vacation in Seoul.

A travelling Halt as Marriage and Kids took over.

Unfortunately, a trip to South Korea would be the last trip abroad for eight years, that’s right, eight years! Because we got married, had kids and bought a house, the critical stuff required in adulthood. Which is excellent, I love being a husband and father, but the travel itch was still there. I often researched for trips, but timing and financings were not there.

But why do I love travelling? Especially when I barely touched the surface in the travel stratosphere.

It’s hard to explain why I love travelling so much because it is an indescribable feeling whether you travel a lot or not.

But as circumstances changed, kids grew older, and we had a bit more money, we finally started to travel again.

And I haven’t stopped since!

Travel restarted with a trip to Fiji.

Suppose I ever think about why I love travelling. In that case, the paradise islands of Fiji in the Pacific stand out because it was here on the beaches of Fiji that I realized that I wanted to travel more. That I needed to see more places and explore this big wide world we live in.

However, it was not only the stunning beachside resorts and cocktails that helped too; the locals were the kindest people I had ever met. They had this unique way of life and culture that I wanted to learn more about.

If a tiny island country could get me enthusiastic about the rest of the world, I was keen to see what other countries had in store.

Exploring Fiji

I was visiting a boutique island in Fiji.

Then Asia came calling again, and I never looked back.

Fiji got the blood pumping for travel. Therefore it was time to travel more frequently. With Asia being the most affordable place to travel from Australia, it became my haven for a trip.

Over the years following Fiji and before the virus hit the world, which took travel to a halt, I visited terrific destinations.

I return trips to South Korea, expanding further than Seoul and seeing beautiful destinations in Muju, Busan and Jeju. I had several trips to Bali, Malaysia and Thailand. I’ll never forget my tenth wedding Anniversary in Koh Samui, Thailand, where it became the Island of Love.

I became well-travelled in Asia, but what stands out the most was two adventures of different kinds. Firstly, in 2017, was the volunteering experience I had in Vientiane, Laos, where I tried my hand at teaching English to school kids and monks.

The second unbelievable experience was hiking in Nepal, just outside Kathmandu, and seeing the unbelievable Himalayas with my two eyes. It was better than any picture I could see on social media or television.

The continent of Asia is spectacular for many reasons, and I’m excited to see what else is out there in this big wide world. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll conquer Europe or even Africa! And that’s why I love travelling, it changes you as a person, witnessing experiences of different cultures in different destinations.

My most memorable trips to this date

Hiking in Nepal, volunteering in Laos or having a wedding anniversary in Koh Samui all stands out, but what indeed is the most memorable trip. Well, I can tell you, it’s none of the above.

  • Kyoto in Japan – Japan is incredible, and Kyoto is a beautiful city to get lost in for a few days. I saw the best tourist attractions, the Fushimi Inari-Taisha and the Kinkaku-Ji, to only name a few best places to visit in Kyoto. The temples, the food and the culture make this place very special to me.
  • South Korea – Whether it’s Seoul, Busan, Jeju, or Gyeongju, there’s an excellent reason I’ve returned to Korea on numerous occasions . It’s a beautiful country with something new, whether the food, the nightlife, or just exploring a new neighbourhood.
  • Nusa Lembongan in Indonesia – The beautiful island of Bali, Nusa Lembongan is the perfect place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. With its turquoise waters, white sand beaches and coral reefs, it’s easy to spend a few days on the island and cherish life and what is around you.

The love of travel inspired my blog, Fair Dinkum Traveller, which started in 2016. It’s a place where I share my personal travel stories, itineraries and tips to help others explore this big wide world we live in.

I have visited some unique places as a travel writer and influencer through writing. I’ve written about travel destinations, especially my immense love of Asia and my home country in Australia.

I’ve been very fortunate to have articles published in well-known travel publications, giving me more opportunities to quench my thirst for travel.

But why do I write about travel? I want to inspire others to get out there and explore this big wide world we live in. I want others to know that seeing the world is possible, whether you’re from a small town or city.

And that’s why I love travelling, because it changes you as a person, witnessing experiences of different cultures in different destinations.

How did you catch the travel bug? Please let me know in the comments below.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

love travel places

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

  • December 2, 2019

For 20 years, Samantha Brown has traversed continents, experienced culture, and tasted adventure applying her singular brand of warmth and inclusion along the way. Her latest project is Places to Love , which airs on PBS. For the month of March, all episodes are available online.

Houston, Texas

Samantha visits one of the most diverse and underrated cities in the United States: Houston, Texas. From art cars to craft beer to soul-inspiring music, Samantha meets some of the most extraordinary people who guide her through the city’s unique offerings, like GONZO247, a graffiti artist turned local celebrity; and 2017 James Beard Award Winner, Chef Hugo Ortega.

Bern Region, Switzerland

From an Alpine Garden on an idyllic mountaintop to going deep underground experiencing the Cheese Grotto in Gstaad, biking through the waterfall covered valley of Lauterbrunnen and finally floating down the icy cold Aare River in Bern: Samantha has a most adventurous journey.

Brooklyn, New York

Samantha finds out the difference between a Brooklyn egg cream and a Manhattan egg cream when she visits Brooklyn and meets a “jerk” at a local soda fountain. From visiting the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard to sampling whiskey at New York City’s oldest distillery, to tasting unique foods at the largest weekly open-air food market in the USA, Samantha takes the opportunity to understand Brooklyn.

Shanghai, China

There is a certain mystique about the Far East, as Samantha soon discovers when she travels to Shanghai, China. Samantha visits the ancient water town of Feng Jing and she takes an Art Deco walking tour along the historic Bund, where she visits a knife and scissor shop on Nanjing Road and learns the art of paper cutting. She ends her trip with a visit to the historic Peace Hotel.

Huntsville, Alabama

Samantha has the pleasure to travel to one of the most unassuming cities in that of Huntsville, Alabama, where she gets to float in space like an astronaut, see a full-scale Apollo rocket and meets Alex McCool, a national treasure who helped put man on the moon. Samantha also ventures out to a soul food restaurant, serving arguably the best fried chicken in the South.

Vancouver, Canada

Samantha starts her trip to Vancouver off trekking beautiful Stanley Park. From there, she takes flight in a classic floatplane to enjoy a stunning tour of the city, followed by landing on a mountain lake. Back into the city, Samantha visits the unique shops of Granville Market, and gets a chance to taste the local salmon at a First Nations restaurant.

Hill Country, Texas

There is a big difference between Texas and Texas Hill Country, and Samantha finds this out quickly when she takes to the road exploring these legendary lands in search of her favorite wildflowers, gets to taste fine cuisine at a farm-to-table German bistro, and shakes-a-leg the historic Gruene Hall, Texas’ oldest dance hall.

Big Sur and Monterey, California

From Monterey to Big Sur, Samantha travels through the Central Coast of California. She learns about underwater sea life at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, visits the “Artichoke Center of the World”, dines at a Mexican restaurant serving up sustainable seafood and local organic produce, enjoys wine tasting at a boutique vineyard, and ends her trip on an electric bike ride along California’s Route 1.

Xi’an, China

Samantha travels to the ancient city of Xi’an, China. Feeling a little jet-lagged, Samantha stops off a local health clinic that has been practicing for over 500 years using traditional Chinese medicine. Along her journey, Samantha rides a bike atop the ancient City Wall, visits the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Terracotta Warriors and attends a spectacular outdoor performance.

Ireland’s Northwest Coast

Samantha travels to the Northwest coast of Ireland where she starts an epic adventure in County Donegal. She hikes up the sea cliffs of Slieve League, herds sheep on a local farm, and learns about the dying craft of wool-weaving. Topping off her County Donegal experience, Samantha visits famous Leo’s Tavern, where she meets Irish celebrity, Moya Brennan of the band Clannad.

Orange County, California

Samantha travels to Orange County in Southern California and meets legendary surfer, PT Townend, who discusses the origins of surfing. Along her journey, Samantha takes a ride to Balboa Island on the oldest privately owned ferry in the USA, learns about the vibrant Vietnamese community in Westminster, and visits the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach.

Montreal, Canada

From immersive to interactive, Montréal is a city that puts on a show of sheer artistry in practically everything that this city is involved with. From hidden-alleyway bicycle tours to the French-Canadian version of Little Italy to its world famous Cirques Festivals to a distiller making gin out of locally sourced botanicals, Montréal both surprised and inspired Samantha in her travels.

Oregon RV Trip

From Hood River to Fossil to Bend, Samantha and her family take in the magnificent scenery and explore some of the most intriguing stops along the way. She also learns how to drive an authentic Model T car, and visits a real-working ranch, where she gets to herd Black Angus cattle while her husband and twins get to dig for fossils.

Hong Kong, China

Samantha strolls through Hong Kong’s Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, learns how to play the generational tile-based game, Mahjong. She visits the Kung Wo Bean Curd Factory where she learns about the process of making tofu.

Greater Palm Springs, California

Samantha visits The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, and historic Joshua Tree National Park. She learns how to play the popular local sport FootGolf, and goes on a Mid-Century Modern tour of Palm Springs.

Lake Geneva and the Valais Region, Switzerland

The Valais Region is home to Barryland, where Samantha visits the living museum that serves as a breeder for the famed St. Bernard dogs. In Geneva, Samantha visits the historic Beau Rivage Geneva hotel, and in Nendaz Samantha takes a gondola ride to the top of the Alps.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Samantha visits the New Mexico Capitol Art Collection; hikes to the peak of Dale Ball Trail #9 overlooking the entire city. Next, she navigates the Margarita Trail of Santa Fe at the legendary Cowgirl BBQ.

Seoul, South Korea

Samantha begins her journey on a tour in Yeonnam-Dong, a re-purposed green space filled with a resurgence of diverse restaurants and coffee shops. Next it’s on to the Korean Stone Art Museum and strolls through the Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival.

Lafayette and Cajun Country, Louisiana

Samantha is instantly engulfed in Cajun and Zydeco music at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. The journey continues with a kayak tour through the local swamps.

Rhine River Cruise

Samantha’s epic cruise along the Rhine River includes a stop at Freiburg, Germany, which is the gateway to the Black Forest. Other stops include Strasbourg, France and the Petite France neighborhood, and the iconic Heidelberg Castle.

Naples and the Paradise Coast, Florida

Samantha’s Paradise Coast adventure includes a kayak tour in the salt-waters of Everglades National Park. She visits the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, and then meets Clyde Butcher, the Ansel dams-esque photographer of the Everglades.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Samantha experiences the revival of the once earthquake devastated city of Christchurch. She begins by exploring the Gap Filler initiatives, which are innovative installations that temporarily fill the gaps. She visits Akaroa Harbor, and then visits a local farm that protects the endangered Pohatu penguins.

Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore is more than a city. It’s a tapestry of tight neighborhoods, giving travelers an exceptional diversity of experiences. This city boasts resilience and a DIY spirit that’s infectious. Yes, Baltimore has overcome incredible challenges, but what should be more well-known and revered is its place in American history, and its unique brand of easy going urban hospitality.

International Food Show

With all the experiences we can have with food, enjoying a meal with others is truly one of the best– no fancy linens or fine china needed. When traveling, the opportunity to have locals share their food with us is something special. When you travel, food is used both to seek comfort, as well as to get us out of our comfort zones. Here are some of my favorites from around the globe.

Charleston, South Carolina

The Holy City certainly has quite the history, you’ll find it in its hidden alleyways and the French Quarter. Other adventures include a lesson in blacksmithing and woodworking; rice harvesting; and a traditional gourmet dinner at Revival, where the focus is on rice and other low country traditional recipes. There’s no place in the world quite like Charleston.

Budapest, Hungary

Everyone has heard of Budapest, but few can grasp its magnificence. It’s a captivating city with a confluence of history, art and music. As one of Europe’s largest cities, it boasts an exuberant energy that must be felt to be believed. It’s a powerhouse of grand experiences that range from the worldly to the local, from the deeply emotional to the joyous. Budapest is a place to love.

The Florida Keys & Key West, Florida

Top of south island, new zealand.

Samantha’s adventures on the South Island, New Zealand include a bicycle ride through vineyards, a boat ride expedition through the Marlborough Sounds, a walk along Awaroa Beach, and a helicopter tour to the peak of Mount Olympus where the Lord of the Rings was filmed.

Sonoma, California

A road trip along the Sonoma coastline enables Samantha to learn about sustainability efforts along the Pacific coast and what to look for off the beaten path. From there it’s a visit to the Charles M. Schulz Museum where Samantha talks “Peanuts” with Charles’ widow, Jeannie. She also gets to meet a local wine maker’s family and learn about the famous Sonoma wine.

The British Virgin Islands

Samantha goes sailing around the historic British Virgin Islands with Capt. Lisa Roland and learns sailing essentials while at sea.  During her island visit, Samantha plants coconut trees in Spring Bay, hikes through the Baths, (a Caribbean natural wonder), and experience freshly made conch ceviche from “Conch Island”.  Finishing off her trip, Samantha and Capt. Lisa snorkel at one of BVI’s top snorkel sites, the Indians.

Dallas, Texas

It’s all about food and art in Dallas. Samantha samples some of the best barbecue in town at Pecan Lodge, and some imaginative chocolate at Dude, Sweet Chocolate. Then it’s off to explore the downtown Arts District strolling through Klyde Warren Park and enjoying the powerful sculptures at Nasher Sculpture Center.  Of course, her visit to Dallas also includes special gift from local artist Travis Austin – a custom designed cowboy hat!

Lakes & Mountains of New Hampshire

Visiting her hometown state, Samantha arrives on Lake Winnipesaukee aboard the M/S Mount Washington and goes straight to Funspot, the world’s largest arcade.  From here, she continues her tour of the Lakes Region by taking a loon-spotting cruise on Squam Lake. Samantha concludes her trip on a Cog Railway ride to the summit of Mount Washington.

Phoenix, Arizona

At the Desert Botanical Garden, Samantha takes in the stunning beauty of wildflowers and blooming cactus along the Sonoran Desert trail.  Then it’s a visit to the popular Breadfruit & Rum Bar, where Samantha samples unique Jamaican dishes and carefully concocted rum cocktails.  From there, Samantha heads to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Taliesin West, which served as Frank Lloyd Wright’s breath-taking winter home and architectural school

Vienna, Austria

Samantha begins her visit to Vienna at the 3rd Man Museum, where she learns about  the city’s fascinating history. From there she visits the Imperial Library, part of the Hapsburg history of the city. A boat ride on the Old Danube River allows Samantha to take in the sights of this historic city before hiking up the hills and sampling wine with views of the city below.

Corning, NY & the Southern Finger Lakes

At the Corning Museum of Glass, Samantha starts off her visit to Crystal City by learning about the history of glass and why Corning is the center of the glass world.  Heading to Bath, Samantha goes on a cemetery tour, get introduced to “English-cut” donuts, and discovers why the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is a little-known American treasure.

Auckland, New Zealand

Samantha sails Auckland Harbor aboard the 2007 America’s Cup winning Team New Zealand sailboat and talks with Peter Lester, a former cup competitor, coach and current sailing commentator. From there, Samantha heads to Piha Beach where she chats with teen surfing champion, Gabby Paul, before taking to the water boarding waves herself.

Coastal Maine

Samantha takes a road trip to Bar Harbor, enjoys breath-taking views from Acadia National Park and takes a cruise through Bass Harbor soaking in the sights of Desert Island and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Back on the main land, Samantha learns about “junk sculpting” from steampunk sculptor, Ernie Abdelnour, samples the house specialty at Flo’s Hot Dogs, and wraps up her visit at a lobster picnic with her family at Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier.

Samantha, Simply a very quick note from long past to tell you that I do still check in from time to time, and think PBS is a perfect venue for you to re-emerge for us. I thought the Donegal episode was a delight from last year, and the Rhine River of this on an enchantment from beginning to end. It might interest you to know that Thos. Jefferson as Minister to France on his one Rhine trip (albeit in the other direction from yours) visited and commented on every single stop you showed except for Freiberg – hopped back to Paris from Strasbourg – even personally checked out that Great Wine Barrel in Heidelberg (and I think measured it). Brought home Riesling cuttings as well, but they all died… It’s so pleasant to see you over the airwaves again, and hope you continue to for as long as you wish. (Capt. Tuttle presents his best wishes to you too. He finally got to Paris last year, maybe Ireland in future, but England, always…)

The only videos I can see are the 1 minute long teasers, am I doing something wrong?

on the teal colored toolbar on top of samantha browns places to love click on blog and then video

I was watching the episode on Brooklyn. My ancestor came to Brooklyn from The Netherlands in 1660 when it was New Amsterdam. He and some others help found a village that is now around the Flatbush area and helped start the Dutch Reform church that’s still in the area

My very favorite episode was the moment in Monaco that you opened the $10 can of soda. I had a good laugh with you! You are the every-girl, Samantha Brown. I’ve delighted in your work for years and have sat in wonder watching you explore the world. I love to travel and I maintain that wonder, too. Thanks for showing the way!

I am enjoying episode after episode during my quarantine and loving every minute. Your shows have always been among my favorites. I especially love that I feel like I smile nonstop from beginning to end of each one, and often find my self laughing outloud with you. Watching you try new things in each place even when you may not “master” it really has inspired me to do the same when out and about… no longer missing the experience and enjoying it for what it is.

Shelley PS – I’m from Oregon – thank you for including us in your travels.

I especially enjoyed watching your show during this time. We actually had to cancel a couple of trips. So this was the next best thing. If I couldn’t travel, it was great seeing some of your destinations. Thanks to you there are a few I will be adding to our list. Your sense of humor coupled with your respect for the different cultures you encounter makes your show just that more enjoyable. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay adventurous.

So glad to have had the opportunity to view this series here during this time of confinement. I love your easy-going and down-to-earth style. I travel almost every summer to Europe and am hoping to return there once again this summer, but, of course, that remains to be seen. After one more summer traveling to Europe, I am planning on focusing my adventures on North America (I’m getting close to retirement age). Therefore, I like that you have featured places in our country as well as those around the world in this series. Glad to see you doing something you clearly enjoy! Thank you for just being you and for choosing PBS/Create TV.

Hi Samantha- My husband and I are working from home and “sheltering in place” in Nashua, NH- I’m 73 and using my husband’s laptop for the first time. I didn’t realize I could watch your shows on a laptop! How fabulous! Just watched Big Sur- and waiting for my hubby to join me and watch another as we have our little “Happy Hour”! S aw you at the Boston travel Show awhile ago- we love to travel…last great trip was Lake Como and Venice. A little challenging right now for all of us but just discovering tons of your shows to watch on this laptop is Heaven!! You’re the BEST!! Many thanks!

Went to Vancouver, Canada for the first time at the end of last year and I just watched the Vancouver episode and it was spot on…. it is one of the most beautiful cities we have ever been to. The one place you missed was Grouse Mountain right outside the city you take a gondola to the top of the mountain you can see a logger show, live bears, bird show a lot of hiking trails a must see..

Dear Samantha, Thank you so much for having the generosity to make many of your trips now available with on-line streaming now that we are slowly ‘sailing’ through this COVID 19 world… I am set to go to China in September, but , like so many other travelers, I am concerned that the trip may not happen… So I so appreciated seeing Shanghai and Xian through your eyes . I especially loved the kite maker, Mr Li, in Xian – how wonderful and what pieces of art those kites are that he makes ! I am looking forward to watching your program on Hong Kong, & your many other trips…. Thank you again for your generosity as a travel expert; and hopefully in the not-too-distant future, it will be safe again to travel…. Salpi Adrouny Johns Creek, Ga.

I, too, have discovered these videos of your “Places to Love” and have been watching a couple every day. Our home is in the mountains so I can’t get the PBS station here. I used to watch you all the time on the travel channel years ago and was so excited to find these on your website. You have a way of making travel so much fun. And you are exactly correct when you say it’s “especially about the people who make you feel like a part” of wherever you are visiting. You have visited so many interesting places and people and I find your shows to be very addictive. Would love to meet you in person one day as you seem like such a warm and friendly person. I tell my husband all the time that (and I’m sure you hear this all the time) I want to be YOU when I grow up! 🙂

Thank you for giving all of us who don’t get to travel but would absolutely love it something to enjoy and learn from. I travel through you! Look forward to many, many more “Place to Love.”

I enjoy your travel shows. My wife is Hungarian and I have discovered Budapest in recent years. Your show was the best one I have ever seen on the city. It obviously inspired you and everyone who watches it. About to watch your Ireland adventure and as I am originally from Belfast and know Donegal well I am really looking forward to it. Thank you, Keith (Calgary, Canada.

i love history and culture, and how this show often shows the less familiar sights and people, such as an old woman that frequents graveyards, or a small resturant in shanghai, as well as the more known places.. there is so much in the world to hold dear and preserve, its worth knowing and respecting, understanding and appreciating.. whimsical samantha is always great, ive enjoyed all her previous series and hope they will continue after this one. chris from missouri

Dear Samantha, Thank you so much for bringing the world to us once again, and with your signature grace, warmth, sense of adventure, curiosity and kindness. The pandemic has made travel restricted or impossible for most of us. And for those of us who adore traveling it can feel quite isolating. But these programs help in an enormous way. I thank you most especially for making these available to the general public during this difficult time. Being a Canadian, it is sometimes difficult to access American programs, so this is truly a special gift.

Need to see your episode that covered Roxbury Mass and the street that shows the Connah Store. There was also a hidden bakery downstairs making fresh Mozzarella cheese. This is the episode. Thank you.

I grew up watching your show with my grandparents! We loved to watch travel shows together. They’ve traveled a lot in their lives, and I’ve been lucky enough to as well. You were were a big part of the spark and curiosity in my childhood that led me to go on so many wonderful adventures!

I didn’t know where I could watch your show anymore, so I’m really delighted to be able to watch all the episodes here!
