Lynn Cahoon: Tourist Trap Mystery Series

August 17, 2018

lynn calhoun tourist trap mysteries

This is one of the most “modern” Cozies I’ve covered for this series, and it’s definitely easy to see the modern Cozy influences. The sleuth, Jill Gardner, is a former lawyer from the big city who decided she needed a change of pace when her marriage and career had both hit low points – the marriage ended, the career stalled in a job she didn’t enjoy. Naturally (for a Cozy at least!) she decided to take this opportunity to follow up her long-running dream of opening a coffeeshop/bookshop in the small town of South Cove, California.

Unfortunately, where a new career goes, murder is sure to follow in a Cozy. In this case, the unfortunate victim is Jill’s elderly friend, Miss Emily, the woman who had originally convinced her to move down to South Cove. Miss Emily didn’t particularly care for her few living relatives, and as a result the death leaves her entire estate in Jill’s hands – much to the consternation of not only the jilted next of kin, but also a potential illegitimate descendant, a sleazy real estate developer, and the town’s unpleasant mayor, all of whom want Miss Emily’s house for its lucrative location. Fortunately, hunky local cop Greg is there for Jill as she endures first threats, then inevitable assaults and attempts on her life. And that’s not mentioning another of Jill’s friends going missing, a load of potentially valuable artwork in the barn, or the possibility of missing Spanish gold!

Though many of the elements of the novel are relatively common in modern Cozies, it’s definitely worth noting that Cahoon’s writing definitely elevates the book above many of the other novels with otherwise very similar themes that you might already have read. One specific element that definitely requires consideration is the romance element – for some readers this might be a plus, for others a negative, but it’s definitely more prominent than in many other similar series this early in.  Either way, this is a very solid beginning to a conventional Cozy Mystery series with a lot of enjoyable modern trappings.

I started reading this series when it first came out and have enjoyed every book in the series. The recent releases have all been novellas but they are still good and the price is right. I hope that there might be more full length books in the future. Lynn Cahoon’s Farm to Table series is also quite interesting.

Janice, I haven’t gotten to the novellas yet! That actually sounds quite refreshing – I think that many Cozies these days are perhaps a bit too long. A shorter, more “to the point” mystery would be appreciated once in a while.

Great reading!!!

August 18, 2018 at 7:00 am

E, I agree!

August 17, 2018 at 1:45 pm

I think I’ll have to add this one to my list…at least on the “Try It” list. Not exactly one of “my” sub-genres, but it does sound very interesting!

August 18, 2018 at 7:06 am

Bek, I would definitely say it’s worth giving a shot, though that might depend on how many “must reads” you have at the moment – probably a lot!

August 18, 2018 at 12:41 pm

Ummmmm…about 1200 on that list as of now, or some 4.5 years of reading.

I absolutely love this series. A huge plus for me is that Cahoon introduces some diversity in this series! A happy surprise. I find Jill a wonderful, human protagonist and Aunt Jackie is a hoot! I like romance in my cozies and this happily fulfills that need.

August 18, 2018 at 7:02 am

Kimberley, I definitely agree that it’s always good to see more diversity in Cozies.

I really enjoy the farm to table series, so I am going to give this series a go. I like the idea of the novellas. I can read on my lunch hour for a relaxing break.

August 19, 2018 at 6:22 am

Rita, I hope you enjoy them!

August 18, 2018 at 10:04 pm

I absolutely love her books. Would recommend them to anyone.

August 19, 2018 at 6:23 am

Penny, thanks for the recommendation!

September 5, 2018 at 11:15 am

Just finished reading it after your post in the August recommendations. She has a nice style that keep the papers turning (or the screen moving; I read it an an e-Book). Interesting that this is the third series that I have recently read where the heroine lives above her store, at least, until she got Miss Emily’s house. Hope the romance aspect will cool in the next book. Too much, for my taste, details of her desire to grab the detective who may or may not be married..

September 6, 2018 at 1:41 am

Hanna, yes, that particular element did end up feeling a bit much. It isn’t my favorite part of Cozies to begin with, either.

Your introduction to popular cozy mysteries is a wonderful idea! And a goldmine for readers (like me) who are relatively new to the genre and don’t know where to start. Thank you!

Jennifer, you’re welcome! I’m glad that these sorts of posts are helpful.

I found out about author Lynn Cahoon through this newsletter and I finished reading her Notebook Guide to Murder and found it to be very enjoyable. It was a cozy read for me and I liked Miss Emily and her friendship with the main character Jill. I did not like how her son and his wife tried to take the house that Jill inherited away from her; the art collection found in the barn our outhouse; It seems that Miss Emily was rich beyond the town’s dream and she left it all to Jill. Her kindness, in the end, to provide for the child’s education even though she was not kin of Miss Emily was nice of Jill. I am sorry about how this read, but it was a good beginning/intro to this author for me to someday read more of her books. Thank you for sharing.

Lynn Cahoon is the one of the noteworthy American author who is famous for writing numerous successful novels in her writing career. Most of the novels written by her are based on the contemporary romance and science fiction genres. Other than those, author Lynn also likes to write some of her novels based on the fantasy and mystery genres. The immense response that she received from the success of her novels has allowed Lynn to be listed in the New York Times and the USA Today bestseller’s lists. The most popular novel series written by author Lynn is the Tourist Trap mystery series. The first novel of this series became so much famous that it went on to win the Reader’s Crown prize in the year 2015 in the category of the Best Mystery Fiction of the Year. Lynn has also finished writing a few of the initial novels of the Cat Latimer series, which is about to be published soon. Author Lynn was born in Nampa, Idaho, The United States, and spent most of her growing years in her hometown. As of today, she lives in one of the other small towns of the country, just like the ones that she likes to write about in her novels. Her happy life consists of her husband and a couple of pet animals, all of whom live in their house located in a tiny historic town near the banks of the Mississippi River.

Author Lynn often likes to spend time on the riverbanks which helps her to imagine about interesting plots that she goes on to develop in her novels. She is represented by a literary agent named Jill Marsal of the Marsal Lyon publishing company. In her personal life, Lynn Cahoon loves happy endings. As a result, all her stories are related to lives in the small towns of The United States. Particularly, she likes to describe all those people who tend to love others unconditionally in spite of not being perfect. Lynn seems to be inspired a lot by her husband who supported her a lot during the times when she was suffering from breast cancer. She says that he went bald to support her when she lost her hairs due to chemotherapy. After surviving from the deadly fight with cancer, Lynn became full of life and began enjoying each and every moment of her life. She raised her son to become a computer engineer and feels very much proud that she was able to do so. In her writing career, author Lynn serves as an active member of the MWA, MORWA, and a few other writers’ associations. Lynn says that she has come a long way from being a small school going girl, who used to love reading exciting books a lot, to one of the prominent romance authors. Whenever she is not busy with her writing works, author Lynn likes to spend her time chatting with her fans and readers on the social networking sites. She loves to talk on the topics of life, love, as well as the pesky things that come in the way of fulfilling our dreams and goals, quite often.

One of the successful novel series written by author Lynn Cahoon is titled as the ‘Bull Rider’ series. This series is comprised of a total of 3 novels and one novella. The first novel of this novel was published under the title ‘The Bull Rider’s Brother’. It was released by the Crimson Romance publishing house. The plot of this novel revolves around the happenings in the lives of the primary characters named Lizzie Hudson and James Sullivan. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that the summer in the town of Shawnee, Idaho begins with the Rodeo weekend. During a night out, Lizzie Hudson is depicted as comparing her life of being a single mother with the successful career of her best friend. At the same time, James Sullivan, who is described as a cowboy, enters into her life once again. Seeing him after a very long time shakes Lizzie, but James seems to have arrived for an eventful weekend.

Upon his arrival in the town of Shawnee, he comes to know that he has a son, who is being taken care of by Lizzie Hudson. He already seems to have his plate full in trying to manage the career of his brother as a bull rider. Now, he is required to carry a more responsible job and learn to get his family together. James Sullivan needs to act quickly before Lizzie decides to give him up and go on to marry another man. On the other hand, Lizzie seems to be happy with the way her life is going on and she does not intend to accept James in the life of her son and herself. But, what she does not realize is the fact that the problems which are not known are much more dangerous than the ones which are known. In these testing times, Lizzie Hudson is required to decide whether certainty and safety are worthy to be given up for getting a second chance of having love in her life.

The second novel of the Bull Rider series written by author Lynn Cahoon was published under the title ‘The Bull Rider’s Manager’. The plot of this novel revolves around the happenings in the lives of the main characters named Barb Cario, Jesse Sullivan, and Hunter Martin. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that Barb Cario spends all her life in business activities. She becomes even more busy after learning that her best friend has married her high school boyfriend. The only thing that she seems focused in is managing the career of Jesse Sullivan and living her life as a single mother. The only salvation that Barb Cario finds is in Hunter Martin, who is also expected to be the next sponsor of Jesse Sullivan. Becoming the father of his niece after his brother’s death had put a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and the only relaxing time he finds is with Barb during the rodeo weekend. Eventually, they end up marrying in a chapel in Las Vegas. But soon, both of them realize that they made a huge mistake by marrying each other and decide that they will end it as soon as they reach home. However, Hunter Martin realizes that if he wants to win the custody of his niece from his distant relatives then he will have to continue with his marriage with Barb. This way, he can prove that he has a pefect family for her niece to grow up. But Barb asks for a favor from Hunter for continuing her marriage with, a favor that she desperately wants to fulfill.
