Totally unacceptable road closures seems to be who ever built the new M23 should be prosecuted uner the fraud act for a brand new road the amount of ongoing roadworks is laughable, as somebody who leaves for work at 03.30 these road closures make my 27 mile trip to work a 42 mile trip to work god help the enviroment with the extra pollution, yet every time i have travelled down the M23 the only thing you see are empty lane, miles of cones, signs on the gantrys all displaying speed limits and lane closures yet no bloody workforce the mary celeste had more people working on it. Shame on the highways agency, brings to mind the joke of a drink up in a brewery, well done for nothing

Totally agree with every comment made on this forum !.. everytime I’ve been to go to Gatwick, to pickup a friend or relative from the airport the M23 section to or from airport is closed off !! .. the M20 is used by more HGV’s between the Swanley interchange to the M26 and that never get closed off as much as the M23 Gatwick section does, is it a Government ploy to stop people travelling on airplane ?

Once again miles and miles and miles of the M23 southbound closed for no apparent reason. No workmen or lorries, and no warning, no signage. I’d driven north this morning and there was no warning that I saw. PLUS although there are ‘lane closed’ as you approach, us dutiful drivers move over but are passed by the naughty ones driving straight to the front of the queue. Why aren’t they clobbered ? BLOODY FRUSTRATING.

You’re meant to stay in lane and the two lanes filter naturally together. There’s nothing dutiful about driving dangerously into an open gap or causing other disruption. I don’t know where this whole idea that you’re supposed to pull in as soon as you see the sign came from. You deserve to be frustrated at the ‘naughty’ people as you obviously don’t know the highway code

This just wouldn’t be allowed to happen up north. Can you imagine the bluster coming from Andy Burnham if they just closed the M56, with him screaming “this wouldn’t be allowed down south”. The truth is we in Sussex get a very raw deal.

What a bloody disgrace highways of England are. I have to travel every night both north bound and south bound . But as usual I’m diverted off to use the A22 . It’s costing me a fortune in fuel. They seem to cone off miles of motorway for what reason. No work’s being carried out but just to piss the public driver off. Some body is being paid a lot of money to run this scheme.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M23

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M23 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M23 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Enter a custom name for this camera if required, then click the route you wish to save it to.

M23 Crash: Six in hospital and more than 30 injured in multi-vehicle collision

  • Saturday 2 March 2024 at 11:14am

ITV News Meridian's Harry Acton has the latest.

Emergency services have dealt with multi-vehicle collision on the M23 in Sussex.

The road was closed in both directions between junctions 10 and 11 for Pease Pottage after more than 15 vehicles collided on the carriageway shortly before 6pm on Friday 1 March.

ITV Meridian understands a triage centre was set up to deal with the number of people injured in the crash.

The M23 has now reopened.

An eyewitness on the ground told ITV that they counted 24 vehicles that were damaged following the crash. They were told 40 people were currently receiving medical treatment from paramedics. Nobody is thought to have been killed, they said.

South East Coast Ambulance, Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue were all in attendance.

The ambulance service confirmed it had taken six people to hospital and treated approximately 30 more at the scene.

Video shared with ITV Meridian shows a large emergency response on the M23.

On Friday, a spokesperson for Sussex Police told ITV Meridian there are multiple casualties being treated by the ambulance service.

They said: “We have closed the M23 in both directions between Junctions 10 and 11 following a serious collision this evening.

“Emergency services were called at around 5.40pm to a collision involving around 15 vehicles. The ambulance service is assessing and treating multiple casualties.

“We are asking the public to avoid the area at this time and to expect significant disruption. Thank you for your patience while this is ongoing.”

Roger Williams, who drove down the M23 when the incident happened, said it was the worst pileup he had seen in 62 years.

“Has to be 30+ vehicles smashed”, he said. “There’s vans on their sides, a minibus upside down. There has to be 30+ vehicles. I counted 5 facing wrong way after spinning but the whole carriageway covered in debris.

“There was a hail storm. The carriageway was covered in 2 inches of ice and people were speeding through it.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: "We are currently in attendance at an RTC involving multiple vehicles between Junctions 10 and 11 of the M23 at Pease Pottage. Please avoid the area."

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance service said: "We remain at the scene of a multi-vehicle RTC on the M23 between junction 10 and 11. We are assessing and treating multiple casualties and urge people to avoid the area."
