3. Pookkottur

Pookkottur near Malappuram, has a place in history, where the mappila warrior fought the British during the Malabar rebellion. Panakkad, 6 Km from malappuram is an important spiritual center for the Muslims of Kerala.

4. Thirunavaya

Tirunnavya the land of ancient Mamankam,is situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha. It is a place of historical importance. In olden days, Mamankam was the grand assembly of the rulers. This was held once in 12 years, in which, one among them was selected as the emperor of Kerala.

It was an enormous trade fair also. The Mamankam festival was celebrated for 28 days. During the festival traders from outside came in ships and barges to Thirunavaya through Ponnani Port.

Two historically important places Nilapadu thara, now in the premises of Kottakkal Tile factory and a deep well called Manikkinar believed to be dumped with bodies of the Chavers are protected.

Thirunavaya has great religious importance. It is is a converging place of the Trimurtis, - (Brahma, Vishnu, Siva). Three temples, are on either bank of Bharathapuzha.

The famous vedic Vidyalaya Othanmar Madhom of ancient times, is on of the left bank of Bharathapuzha, near the Siva temple. This madhom was a center of aryanisation through Sanskrit and Vedic education as Thirunavaya as believed to be the main center, where Parasurama brought and settled Brahmins.

The place (Mana) of Puranic fame Azhvanchery Thamprakkal is 2 Kms north of Tirunnavya. Nava mukunda Temple beloved to be constructed by Nava yogis on the right bank of Bharathapuzha, is an important Vishnu temple of Kerala. The rituals Pithru Tharpanam and Bali karmam are performed here.

Tirur, one of the important business centres of Malappuram district is situated 41 Km south of Kozhikode. Tirur is famous for Thunjan Paramba. Thunjan Parambu is a sacred place for Malayalees. This is the birthplace of Thunjathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam Literature.

Tanur, an important coastal town in Malappuram was one of the earliest Portuguese settlements. Tanur is an important fishing centre in Malappuram. There is a famous temple in Tanur, Kerala Dheeswara Puram temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Kottakkunnu

The highlight of this place is the exquisite view of the entire Malappuram City from the hill, and boy is it splendid! Walking on the paved track on Kottakunnu and the uninterrupted view it offers is an enriching experience. There are remains of an old fort at the crest of the Cantonment Hill, which are built by the zamorins of Calicut.

The Vettakkorumakan Temple and the Shiva Temple are other attractions of this divine place. These temples are famous for their architecture, and are renowned for housing murals of Malabar.

This place also offers an art gallery exhibiting various artistic works of experienced artisans as well as tribal art. An additional attraction is the amusement park opened to the public by the municipality of Malappuram city.

The place itself has its own historical significance. Remains of the British Raj still exist, and is marked as the death place of Variyan Kunnathu Kunjahammed Haji, the man who spearheaded the rebellion in 1921, was executed in the premises of this site by British savagery.

The destination is situated 51km away from Kozhikode, 25km away from Karipur Airport, 29 km from Tirur railway station and 12km from Kottakkal. Tourists can even use helicopters as the place contains a helipad.

Keralam Kundu Waterfalls

This waterfall is a natural wonder of gushing waters that fall down a cliff to a tranquil and placid pool of still, sparkling water. This heavenly place is situated in the outskirts of a small village called Karuvarakundu. The waterfall preserves its beauty even in the summer with an abundant flow of water. This destination is a favourite choice for travellers visiting Malappuram as it is bestowed with a pleasant and composed ambiance.

Situated in the middle of the silent valley, this waterfall is a mesmerizing scenic location. We can also bathe in the pool! Spending a few hours in the water will surely rejuvenate you. The entire place is rich in flora, with plenitude of traditional, medicinal and aromatic vegetation. Karuvarakundu is located in the eastern part of Malappuram. It is located about 30kms from Manjeri and Perinkhalavam. On reaching Karuvarakundu town, there is a 6km distance to the Keralam kundu Waterfall and its appealing pool. The nearest airport is Calicut which is approximately 60km from the destination.

Nilambur Teak Museum

The world’s first teak museum is located in Nilambur, it is aesthetically laid out and showcases the wonders of our nature. This place truly is an eminent tribute to the enduring success of Indian Forestry. The museum is established and maintained by the Kerala Forest Research Institute along with the Kerala Forest Department.The exhibits in the museum are so impressive, it’s definitely worth the travel. From this place one can get a complete history about teak wood, its scientific, aesthetic and cultural details.

The main feature of the museum is that even the entrance door is crafted out of teak wood! Along with it are numerous sculptures of human figures, ships, boats all made of teak. There are also photographs and paintings of 170 year old giant tree.

Apart from teak, the museum also has a collection of over 300 butterflies, moths and insects found in teak plantations along with a library on teak and a mini auditorium for audio-visual presentations. The biggest attraction of this place is the well preserved root system of a gigantic tree and logs of a 116 year old tree displaying nature’s expertise in engineering design.

The museum is only 4km from Nilambur Town and it would be a loss not to visit.

Padinjarekara  Beach

Kadampuzha Temple

Kadampuzha Temple, one of the ancient temples of the district is situated in the remote town named Melmuri of Tirur taluk. Despite the fact that there is no recorded proof for the development of this sanctuary however a solid conviction expresses that it was built by Jagadguru Shri Shankara Acharya of Kalady. The fundamental god revered in the sanctuary is Goddess Kadampuzha, a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva.  Here, the self manifested Divine Presence, is worshiped as a presence only. Unlike other temples, Kadampuzha is unique in that there are no idols for the Devi. The origin of the name Kadampuzha is considered to have been formed from; Kadan Ambu Eitha Uzha – meaning, The Place where Kiratha Shot the Arrow. Kadan is Kiratha, Ambu is Arrow, Eitha is Shot and Uzha is Place. Location:  Malappuram, Kadampuzha, Kerala 676553 Timings:  4 AM to 12 PM & 3:30 PM to 7 PM Entry Fees:  None How to reach:  The temple is around 17 km from the town and you can reach via Cheruparamba - Melmuri Rd.

Thirunavaya Nava Mukunda Temple

An ancient Hindu temple built on the North bank of the Bharatapuzzha River, this place of worship is dedicated to Navamukundan or the Narayana Vishnu, and is one of the 108 ‘Tirupatis in the country. The most majestic part of the rituals here includes the usage of the water from the River, same as in the fashion followed in Kashi.  What is noteworthy is that the structure standing today is not the same as the original one, as it was destroyed twice in 18th century and 20th century, and somehow still retains the original charm. Location:  Tirur - Kuttippuram Road, Dist, Thirunavaya, Kerala 676301 Timings:  Everyday, 5 AM to 11 AM & 5 PM to 7:30 PM Entry Fees:  None How to reach from city:  The temple is located at a distance of about 30 km from Malappuram. You can reach here by taking the Highway Number 66, and getting off from it at Puthanathani. From there, ride towards the river.

It started as a humble wooden garrison on a hill and turned into one of the biggest and best known fortresses in the world. This is both a very impressive tourist attraction and also the seat of power for Russia with the office of the president inside its walls. It is home to several 500 hundred year old cathedrals, the world renowned Faberge Eggs and also the world’s biggest sapphire (not to mention a 160 carat diamond!). If you want to know more I have a separate post on visiting the Red Square and the Kremlin in Moscow .  Nearest metro: Aleksandrovksy Sad- Dark Blue, Red or Grey lines.

This is the best collection of Russian Art in the world and was started in the 19 th century by Pavel Tretyakov. If you go and you see how many great paintings he managed to get by himself you can’t help but be impressed. The collection today has 130,000 items! Like most museums it is not possible to see everything in a day and as I don’t know much about art I looked at the more famous painters and some of the paintings and icons are amazing. Even being from poor old Ireland I recognised some of the paintings and here they were in Moscow! Artists such as Repin, Vereshchagin, Surikov, Serov etc etc.  They may not be household names to people not in the know in the west but they still are very impressive. The older paintings of landscapes etc are hard to get excited about but the late 19 th century stuff of poverty and social issues are excellent. The State Tretyakov Gallery is not to be confused with the New Tretyakov Gallery (modern art) which is situated close by. Even to spend 3hrs to half a day here is well worth it. Admission is 400 Ru and 200Ru for photography. http://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/en/

5)      What to do in Moscow – Moscow Metro

If you are visiting Moscow you will undoubtedly be riding the metro unless you are crazy enough to contend with the randomness and traffic of the streets. Moscow’s Metro stations are one of the fanciest in the world. They have tributes to war, peace, women, Ukraine, agriculture, the list goes on and each metro is unique. There are no modern contemporary stations built of glass or modern art but they still are a sight to behold. It is well worth giving yourself more time when going somewhere so you can get off when you see a fancy stop. For more info and the best stations see my other post on the beautiful Moscow Metro.

6)      What to do in Moscow – Park Pobedy / Victory Park

This park doesn’t appear high on many lists but you should definitely pay it a visit. Like many memorials in Moscow it commemorates war and this one is victory in WWII or the Great Patriotic War as they call it in Russia. The large park is great to walk around but the main highlight and close to the metro station is the central avenue which has a fountain for everyday of the war and 10cm for each day on a 142mtr (520ft) high obelisk. Behind the obelisk is the Great Patriotic Museum which goes through artefacts and history of the war including plenty of surviving examples of guns, artillery, coats etc etc. There are some English translations for the main parts but not everything is covered. Admission 250Ru. Just outside Park Pobedy metro is the Triumphal Arch which is a huge arch in the middle of the road to commemorate Napoleon’s defeat in 1812. It was this same hill where Napoleon waited in vain to receive the keys to the Kremlin. Nearest Metro: Park Pobedy – Dark Blue line.

The statue park is over the Moskva River to the east in Park Rayon Yakimanka and contains weird statues as well as old USSR statues of the heroes.  Nearest Metro: Kropotkinskaya on the red line or Polyanka on the grey line. Both attractions are in-between the two.

9)      What to do in Moscow – Bolshoi Theatre

The most famous theatre in Moscow and one of foremost theatres in the world and even adorns the 100 Rubles banknote. The company also has the largest ballet in the world. Originally built in 1824 and after a very expensive upgrade in 2011 the Bolshoi is very grand indeed (Bolshoi means grand or big in Russian). The theatre is worth a look from the outside but you cannot get in unless you buy a ticket which without the help of touts outside you must do it well in advance online. It is only a 5 min walk north of the Kremlin so very central. http://www.bolshoi.ru/en/ . Nearest Metro: Teatralnaya on the dark green line

10)   What to do in Moscow – Moscow’s Viewpoint

One of the highest points in Moscow is on the south west of the city close to Moscow State University. This point is located in front of one of Stalin’s huge ‘7 sisters’ buildings and is immediately above where the 1980 Olympic Stadium is.  The view point has free viewing telescopes and it is possible to see both the new and old sides of the city. This is not an unbelievable view or anything but it is good and if you get off at Vorobyevy Gory metro station then there is a pleasant 10min walk up the hill through a park which runs alongside the Moskva River. The viewpoint is on (street) Ul. Kosygina and the Nearest Metro is Vorobyevy Gory on the Red line.

Judith, the short answer is I don’t know. I tried to find out but couldn’t find anything on it. They do have works from other artists there so maybe it has some obscure meaning. Sorry I can’t be of help.

Pyatnitskaya street - the Tretyakov Gallery - Luzhkov Bridge - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior - the Gogolevsky Boulevard - the Nikitsky Boulevard - the Tverskoy boulevard - Teatralnaya street - the Bolshoi Theatre – the Kitai - Gorod - Red Square and GUM store - the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge

This route is the best one if you want to see the heart of Moscow. It goes right through the major places of interest and touches upon the most exciting and vibrant areas of Moscow such as part of the Boulevard Ring, which is absolutely loved by everyone.

Cozy streets of Zamoskvorechye will never leave you indifferent. This district has a long and vivid history and is full of old baroque houses along with Stalinist buildings. It includes three theatres, three museums and sixteen churches.

Back in the 18 th century Zamoskvorechye was known as a quiet, country-like land of single-storey houses and conservative businessmen. It remained country-like and is much more filled with business than before, as this area is just right in the city centre.
