I was in a Ryanair emergency landing – it was calm, until the chanting began

Solo travellers began introducing themselves to their neighbours, couples whispered their i love yous and directly in front of me a woman started to pray.

Nobody screamed. There wasn’t even a hushed silence. When the cabin crew announced that we would have to adopt the brace position for landing, most of my fellow passengers on the mid-week Ryanair flight from Faro to Stansted on a Boeing 737 aircraft carried on reading or staring at their phones. It was as though nothing had happened.

For a moment it was comforting. Perhaps I had misheard. But then the crew began to move through the cabin with some urgency, reminding each row what the brace position entails.

“When we tell you to, please put your hands over your head and place your feet flat on the floor,” they said. “It’s very important”.

A man to my left obligingly popped an earphone out, did a quick practice “brace”, then smiled at the stewardess and returned to his episode of Friends .

I looked at my little family. We didn’t seem all that prepared for impact. My wife was struggling with a wriggly baby, who, perhaps sensing something was up, was desperately trying to escape from his seatbelt. And grinning in the seat between us was our three-year-old. He was delighted to put his hands on his head, but struggled with the second instruction: his feet dangled a good six inches off the floor.

Another passenger asked what was going on, but the stewardess didn’t give us details. There was some sort of problem with the plane , she said, and we might be in for a bumpy landing.

Cabin crew are trained, and then re-trained every 12 months, in both planned and unplanned emergency landing procedures and how to instruct passengers. In a planned scenario, time is available for the full emergency protocol, but if it’s unplanned they could have as little as three minutes. They might choose to tell you only what you need to know.

Information from the pilot was also limited. His first announcement blamed our delay on “operational issues”. His second presumably dealt more directly with the whole bracing thing, but it’s impossible to know because he was infuriatingly inaudible. “Surely they could have turned him up to the same volume level they use for flogging scratch cards?” I thought as I searched the faces of other passengers for clues.

But there were none. And by now concern had crept into the cabin. Not panic as such, but nobody knew quite what to do with themselves. Solo travellers began introducing themselves to their neighbours, couples whispered their I love yous and directly in front of me a woman started to pray. Then it began. “Brace, brace”.

I don’t know what I’d expected, but it certainly wasn’t chanting. Cabin crews are instructed to call out the word “brace” in unison, every second, for the duration of the landing. I suppose it’s to keep you focused, but along with the prayers and the gentle lullaby of an anxious parent somewhere behind, it added a dash of the horror genre to the disaster movie playing out in my mind.

Head down, contorted into a cuddle-brace with my son, I waited for impact. And when it came, it was… fine. We came in a little hot perhaps, and it seemed to take an eternity to come to a standstill, but without the tense build-up, the flashing lights of emergency vehicles outside, or the inevitable three cheers for the captain, it could have been any landing.

According to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) there were 790 “occurrences” – the aviation term for accidents or near misses – in the UK in 2023. But that figure includes all private light aircraft. Thankfully, accidents involving commercial flights continue to be rare, with ground collisions, tail strikes, and “runway excursions” (where the plane leaves the runway) the most common. Emergency, or precautionary landings are not necessarily included in these stats – as long as the plane touches down safely.

Ryanair still hasn’t told me what the problem was, or why a lovely family holiday ended with me contemplating my mortality. I guess we’ll never know, but I’m very grateful that the pilot and crew knew exactly what to do

Asked for comment, Ryanair replied: “This flight FR5784 on 23 April is currently being investigated by Ryanair safety team in conjunction with the Irish Aviation Authority and we are unable to comment on same until this investigation has been completed.”

As we disembarked, normality returned unnervingly quickly. Passengers were perhaps a little kinder, pausing to let others out of their seats, but the cabin crew lined up as usual to say their goodbyes. We asked the attendant if she could tell us any more, but she just shrugged and wished us a safe onward journey. It was as though nothing had happened.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has called on Boeing to improve quality control, warning his airline’s profits will fall and fares will rise because of manufacturing issues plaguing the US group and its rival Airbus.

Both manufacturers are striving to make aircraft as fast as they can to meet booming demand amid a global shortage of planes.

But an accident on Friday when part of a Boeing 737-9 Max fell off during an Alaska Airlines flight is a new problem for the US company, which was already struggling with deliveries and long-running supply chain issues.

“Capacity is heavily challenged . . . air fares, particularly peak summer, are going to be higher because there’s going to be less short-haul capacity around Europe,” O’Leary told the Financial Times.

“The real challenge for both Airbus and Boeing is they are both running behind on their plans to increase monthly production. A lot of that is supply chain pressures. I think that both Airbus and Boeing, certainly Boeing, need to significantly improve quality control,” he said.

Boeing declined to comment.

Tim Clark, president of Dubai-based Emirates, said the accident was a setback for Boeing as it seeks to win back market share after its fleet was grounded in 2019. “They’ve had quality-control problems for a long time now, and this is just another manifestation of that,” he told Bloomberg on Monday. “I think they’re getting their act together now, but this doesn’t help.”

Ryanair is one of Boeing’s largest customers and has about 400 aircraft on order. It operates and orders different variants of the 737 Max from the type grounded by US regulators following the Alaska Airlines accident.

O’Leary said Ryanair has already been hit by delivery delays on its new aircraft, which is likely to affect profits because it will not be able to carry as many passengers as expected in its next financial year. 

O’Leary said: “We were supposed to have 27 aircraft delivered prior to Christmas, we finished up getting 11. We’re supposed to have 57 aircraft delivered to us by the end of April, and we think we’d be lucky to get 50 by the end of June. So we’re going to be left five, seven, maybe 10 aircraft short for the peak summer season this year.”

He said he expected Ryanair’s full-year passenger numbers for its financial year beginning in April to fall from 205mn to 200mn because of the delivery delays.

“It costs us, if you’re talking being down 5mn on 205mn passengers . . . probably two, two and a half per cent of profits,” he said.

Ryanair cut some flights this winter and in July revised down its passenger forecasts for its current financial year from 185mn to 183.5mn because of the Boeing delays.

O’Leary has previously criticised Boeing’s senior management , saying they were “not up to the job” in 2022 as delivery delays hit.

But he said he thought the company had improved its performance, despite its recent problems.

“I think they’re doing a better job now . . . I think they’re working their way through the problems,” he said.

“The 737 is fine. But it doesn’t need these kind of short-term reputational issues,” he added.

Some airlines flying Airbus planes also face disruption this summer because their engines require early inspection to check for defects.

More than a thousand Pratt & Whitney engines need to be removed from Airbus aircraft and inspected, forcing a number of airlines to change their schedules or ground aircraft .

In Europe, Ryanair’s rival Wizz Air has been hit particularly hard and has cut its growth targets. Chief executive József Váradi told the FT in November that the airline faced an “unprecedented operational challenge” that could last 18 months.

Airbus had a backlog of 8,184 passenger aircraft at the end of 2023, while the figure for Boeing was 5,661, of which 4,515 were variants of the 737 Max, according to provisional figures from aviation data company Cirium.

The best carry-on luggage can easily fit in an airplane's overhead compartment and hold all your travel essentials without giving way. I spoke to Briggs & Reiley CEO Richard Krulik about what makes a good carry-on and listed the best carry-on luggage to buy now. Krulik only provided general shopping guidance, he did not make any product recommendations.

Carry-on luggage buying guide

Spinner wheels: "You want smooth wheels since that makes a huge difference when you're rolling the bag through a very long terminal," says Krulik. 360-degree spinner wheels are the best as they can rotate in any direction and will glide smoothly at the airport or train station.

Additional pockets: "A front pocket is always a real plus on a carry-on because you may want quick access to a magazine or a light jacket," says Krulik. Some carry-ons also have extra back pockets.

Telescopic handle: "You also want a firm solid handle that's not flimsy or wobbly," says Krulik. An adjustable handle is also important as we're all different heights, he adds.

Locks: You must buy a carry-on with built-in locks or lockable ones. TSA-approved locks can help keep your bag safe on the off chance that you need to check it in at the gate. You can also use your carry-on to hold travel documents instead of using the safe in your hotel room.

Durability: Ballistic nylon is the strongest and most long-lasting durable material, according to Krulik. That said, reinforced polyester is also a great option if you're looking for hard-sided luggage says Krulik. Before you shop, also make sure to look at a brand's testing requirements. Brands will usually test the bag's wheels on uneven surfaces to see how they hold up, and check how strong the outer shell is by subjecting the bags to drop tests.

Style: This depends on personal preference. Maybe you want a monogrammed travel suitcase or a bag that stands out from the rest - maybe in a pastel color? You'll want to think of your bag as an accessory, says Krulik. Keep your personal style in mind when you shop.

Size: Every airplane has different carry-on requirements, that said most domestic airlines require that your carry-on be 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches in size. International airlines are a bit different, while many follow the same domestic rules, some airlines prefer carry-ons only to be under 22 inches tall. Either way, check your chosen airline's baggage size requirements before purchasing any of the below.

Is hard-side or soft-side luggage better?

Soft-side luggage is less susceptible to getting scratched up, according to Krulik. That said, one isn't really better than the other, it's more a matter of personal preference. Soft-side luggage also has tons of additional front and back pockets for storage, which is not common on hard-side luggage. If you're packing items that are fragile, a hard-side option is better, according to Krulik.

How can I efficiently pack my carry-on?

"One of the things that I think people don't realize is every time you make a fold in your clothes, it's adding bulk to what you're packing," says Krulik. Fold your shirts in half instead of threes, he adds. "Secondly, there's dead space inside those shoes that you're packing." Stuff them with travel shampoo bottles or anything else that fits says Krulik. Finally, if you have an expandable suitcase, make sure you avoid expanding it till the end of your trip. "If I go with a maximum bag that's stuffed to the limits, I have no place to put anything that I might want to buy on the trip."

French strike forces Ryanair to cancel more than 300 flights across Europe

Ryanair urges European Commission to protect overflights and keep EU skies open

Ryanair has demanded that the EU reform its skies after the airline was forced to cancel more than 300 flights across Europe scheduled for Thursday because of a strike by French air traffic controllers.

The cancellations come in spite of the withdrawal of strike action by one of the biggest unions, the SNCTA, which came too late to avoid disruption after France’s civil aviation authority asked airlines to cut flights.

Ryanair said 50,000 of its passengers would be affected because of France’s failure to protect overflights – where planes fly over the country without landing there – during industrial action.

It said most of the disrupted passengers would be simply flying over French airspace en route to the likes of Greece or Spain.

The airline called on the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , to take action to protect overflights by law during air traffic control strikes, to allow Europe’s other controllers to manage flights over France during the strikes, and limit the power of unions to call strikes immediately.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said: “French air traffic controllers are free to go on strike, that’s their right, but we should be cancelling French flights, not flights leaving Ireland, going to Italy, or flights from Germany to Spain or Scandinavia to Portugal.

“The European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen has failed for five years to take any action to protect overflights and the single market for air travel. We’re again calling on her to take action to protect overflights which will eliminate over 90% of these flight cancellations.”

Despite the French strike this week, O’Leary said he believed air travellers would see significantly less disruption over summer 2024 than during the past two years, when labour shortages and strikes limited capacity.

FRENCH ATC STRIKE FORCES RYANAIR TO CANCEL OVER 300 FLIGHTS, AFFECTING 50,000 PASSENGERS

RYANAIR CALLS AGAIN ON URSULA VON DER LEYEN TO PROTECT OVERFLIGHTS AND KEEP EU SKIES OPEN

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, today (24 Apr) announced cancellations of over 300 flights, due to tomorrow’s French ATC strike on Thursday, 25 th April. This is due to France’s failure to protect overflights during its national air strikes. Even though it’s French ATC that are striking, most disrupted passengers are not flying to/from France but overfly French airspace en route to their destination (e.g., UK – Greece, Spain, Italy). French law unfairly protects domestic flights which means French flights are protected but non-French flights get cancelled. Ryanair again calls on the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, to take urgent action to protect overflights, which she has failed to do for the last 5 years. EU citizens’ freedom of movement is being denied by these ATC strikes and we call on passengers to join our campaign by signing our ‘ Protect Overflights: Keep EU Skies Open’ petition, which has over 2.1m signatures from Europe’s fed up passengers.

Ryanair and its 200m passengers demand that the EU Commission take the following measures in order to protect overflights during French ATC strikes;

• Protect French overflights by law during ATC strikes as they do in Greece, Italy and Spain
• Allow Europe’s other ATCs to manage flights over France while French ATC are on strike
• Mandate that French ATC unions must engage in binding arbitration before calling strikes

Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said:

“French air traffic controllers are free to go on strike, that’s their right, but we should be cancelling French flights, not flights leaving Ireland, going to Italy, or flights from Germany to Spain or Scandinavia to Portugal. The European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen has failed for 5 years to take any action to protect overflights and the single market for air travel. We’re again calling on her to take action to protect overflights which will eliminate over 90% of these flight cancellations.

In June, we will have European elections, we encourage everyone to vote in these elections and demand your MEP and the European Commission to take action to protect overflights. We can’t have the skies over Europe repeatedly closed because French Air Traffic Controllers are going on strike.

Protect overflights during national ATC strikes, reduce flight cancellations and disruptions and let’s have a better summer for all of Europe’s citizens and visitors.”

Ryanair launches prague – paphos & kosice routes.

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, today (1st August) celebrated the first flight from Prague to Paphos, while on Monday (3rd August) it will launch a twice weekly service to Kosice, both as part of its extended Summer 2020 schedule.
