Modest Mouse and Slowdive lead new touring festival Daydream
- X (formerly Twitter)
Daydream is a brand-new touring event that's coming to Australia this April and we reckon it will have indie rock fans feeling pretty great.
Before we go any further, here's the excellent line-up:
Modest Mouse , Slowdive , Tropical Fuck Storm , Beach Fossils , Cloud Nothings , Majak Door
Modest Mouse were at the vanguard of indie rock in the 90s and 2000s thanks to ground-breaking records like The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica .
They found a whole new audience with 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News , but didn't let their new-found fame dull their creative ambitions.
Frontman Isaac Brock continues to craft excellent indie rock, most recently evidenced on their very strong 2021 album The Golden Casket .
This will be the first time the band has toured Australia since 2016, so fans will be very eager to get the chance to see them again, though sadly without drummer Jeremiah Green, who died from cancer on New Year's Eve.
Slowdive are nothing short of royalty. The shoegaze icons made some of the most beautiful and powerful records of the early-mid-'90s before breaking up in 1995.
They reformed in 2014 and delivered a self-titled record in 2017 that was genuinely as good as the work they'd given us 25 years earlier.
The band were here for the Laneway Festival a few years back, and those shows were some darn good that we are confident in saying that their return to Australia is honestly unmissable.
These two esteemed headliners will be joined by one of the country's most consistently unique and exciting bands in Tropical Fuck Storm , whose raucous and incisive brand of indie-skronk is consistently affecting in the best of ways.
Brooklyn indie rockers Beach Fossils finally return to Australia, a decade on from their last shows. The band has only gotten better in that time so we're looking forward to making up for lost time when they're here for Daydream.
The prolific and gloriously noisy Cloud Nothings were here about five years ago, but we've missed them too. The band's 2021 LP The Shadow I Remember had a ton of excellent tunes and we can't wait to hear them live.
Rounding out the bill is Melbourne's Majak Door , though they won't play Brisbane.
Here are the dates for this extraordinary bill of indie rock goodness. Tickets are on sale from 9am Friday 3 February.
Saturday 22 April – Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne
Saturday 29 April – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney
Sunday 30 April – Brisbane Riverstage

Modest Mouse to headline new mini-festival Daydream in April 2023
Slowdive, Tropical Fuck Storm and Beach Fossils also join the line-up
Daydream, a new touring mini-festival, has shared the line-up and dates for its inaugural run this April.
The tour was teased by Destroy All Lines last week ahead of its official announcement today (January 30). Headlining it is Modest Mouse , who will return to Australia almost exactly seven years on from their previous tour in 2016. They are joined on the bill by Slowdive – themselves making a return after more than five years – as well as Tropical Fuck Storm , playing some of their only shows for 2023. View a full list of the line-up and dates below.
A promoter pre-sale will begin at 9am local time on Thursday February 2, with the general sale following at the same time on the next day (February 3). Ticketing information for the Sydney and Melbourne shows can be accessed here , while that for the Brisbane show can be found here .
The announcement comes in the wake of recent personal tragedy for both Modest Mouse and Tropical Fuck Storm. The former announced the death of co-founder and drummer Jeremiah Green last month , while the latter announced earlier in January that bassist Fiona Kitschin had been diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer.
Modest Mouse have continued with Damon Cox – the drummer of An Horse and the band’s long-time drum tech – replacing Green for live shows. Kitschin, meanwhile, recently offered an update to fans ahead of her first chemotherapy session, showing gratitude for the “well wishes and kind words” she received following the band’s announcement.
“I was scared AF [sic] today going into my first chemo, but took all your good vibes in with me,” she wrote.

Modest Mouse and Slowdive to Headline New Touring Festival Daydream
Daydream will tour through Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane this coming April.
It's a great day to be an indie music lover with the announcement of new touring festival Daydream, which boasts an incredible lineup with a range of international heavy hitters.
Set to kick off in April, the festival will tour through Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane so all the major cities get a taste of what this new event has to offer.
Returning to Australia for the first time since 2016, Modest Mouse will headline the show, bringing their massive catalogue of hits, including tracks from the revered The Lonesome Crowded West , which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year.
UK legends Slowdive will also feature, bringing with them their classic ambient rock-infused tracks from their newest album, Sugar For The Pill , as well as hits from albums like Just For A Day and Souvlaki that made waves in the 90s.
Tropical Fuck Storm are also set to grace the stage, which comes as a surprise since their shock announcement that founding bassist and vocalist Fiona Kitschin has been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, and the band stated that they would have to "play everything by ear." in reference to their already booked shows.

Float on, festival fans: come April, Australia's newest excuse to see a heap of bands in one spot will make its way along the country's east coast. That touring event: the just-announced Daydream. It's hitting Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane with quite the roster of indie-rock talent — headlined by Modest Mouse three decades after the Washington-born group first got together.
Don't listen to the title of the band's acclaimed 2004 album, though — this is good news for people who love good news, not bad. Joining Modest Mouse on the bill are Britain's Slowdive, who initially formed in 1989, the reformed in 2017, as well as Australian favourites Tropical F*ck Storm.
Daydream will hit up Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday, April 22 to kick things off, then head north. The fest plays the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Saturday, April 29, followed up Brisbane's Riverstage on Sunday, April 30.
The lineup varies slightly per city, with Beach Fossils and Cloud Nothings taking to the stage at all stops, but Majak Door missing Brisbane.
And no, it isn't too early into 2023 to start packing your calendar with music festivals. New year, new diary to fill, after all — and Daydream, the also just-announced Lazy Mountain and more are firmly here to help.

Seminal US indie rockers Modest Mouse have announced their first headline Aotearoa show in over a decade.
The band from Washington State will perform at Auckland’s Powerstation on Thursday, April 20th, which will be their first show in the country in 12 years.
While in the Southern Hemisphere, they’ll also visit Australia, with two shows being added to the tour today (see full details below). Tickets for the Auckland show go on sale Monday, February 20th at 12pm local time. The Frontier Members pre-sale begins on Thursday, February 16th at 12pm local time.
Modest Mouse are also headliners at the inaugural Daydream festival , which will be held at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, and Brisbane’s Riverstage at the end of April. Slowdive, Beach Fossils, and Cloud Nothings also feature on the Daydream lineup, alongside local acts Tropical F*ck Storm and Majak Door.
Renowned for thrilling anthems like “Float On”, “Dramamine”, and “Ocean Breathes Salty”, Modest Mouse – who recently lost their wonderful drummer Jeremiah Green to cancer – are belatedly touring in support of their 2021 album, The Golden Casket , which reached the top 20 on the US Billboard Top Rock Albums.
Isaac Brock and co.’s seventh studio album still received wide plaudits from critics. “The band’s first new album in six years is a procession of pinging, clanging, reverberating tactile pleasures, an inventive backdrop for Isaac Brock’s familiar blend of forced optimism and unforced paranoia,” Pitchfork wrote in a positive review.
“The Pacific Northwesters have turned in a psychedelic pop masterwork that picks up the positivity they first explored with 2004 mega-smash “Float On.”” hailed NME .

Modest Mouse New Zealand 2023
Frontier Touring is stoked to announce the return of American rock band Modest Mouse to play one rollicking show only at Auckland’s Powerstation this April!
Capable of punkish rawness, simmering atmosphere, and light-hearted pop, Modest Mouse shaped the sound of late-'90s indie rock and have enjoyed mainstream success in the years that followed. Their major-label debut, 2000's moody, sprawling The Moon and Antarctica, showed just how grandly ambitious their music could be, while 2005's platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated commercial breakthrough Good News For People Who Love Bad News and its smash hit Float On revealed their flair for anthemic pop singles.
Modest Mouse last played in New Zealand in 2011 and that show sold out immediately. Now, over ten years later, the band are finally coming back!
