Wonderful tour of Pompeii with Clelia

We took a wonderful shared tour of Pompeii with Clelia. We had an excellent time! Pompeii has fascinated me since I first learned about the archaeological site in 7th grade, and I was so excited for this tour. Clelia did an excellent job describing the events of the AD 79 eruption and what happened to the town and the people. Her tour was very informative and she pointed out many small details that we would've completely missed had we toured on our own. She was thoughtful, helpful and knowledgeable. She was so kind to our children who joined us on the tour and made sure to include them throughout the tour! She pointed out many things that we were able to come back and explore on our own later in the day. We are so grateful for the opportunity we had to take this tour with her and will definitely use Mondo Guides again if we come back!

This tour was a success, thanks to our guide Carmine. Our train from Sorrento was running late, and Carmine made sure someone would meet us at the station and help us catch up with the group. Carmine was very passionate about the history of Pompeii and the people that lived there. His presentation was informative and engaging. Having studied archaeology in college, he spoke with authority on the methods used to uncover the buried city and preserving the artifacts. We learned a lot! Tip: follow up with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, where most of the items dug out in Pompeii are now exhibited.

The tour guided by Mario was fantastic! It was a perfect day - We had ample amount of time in each location to see what we wanted, get food, relax or shop. Van was comfortable and spacious as well. I am so happy we found this tour service! Everything was great and I totally recommend.

The Naples region has many fascinating sights and areas that are best explored with a local guide. To make things easier and more affordable for my readers, I've partnered with Naples-based Mondo Guide to coordinate shared tours. I'm not making any money from this arrangement; this is an experiment to see if we can make the luxury of a private guide affordable for my readers. Just sign up for the tour(s) you're interested in. Mondo will do their best to assemble a small group of like-minded travellers. If enough people sign up, they'll send you a confirmation; if the tour won’t run, they’ll alert you. A shared tour is a smart way to experience the sights, while meeting up with fellow Rick Steves readers. For more details, see the latest edition of the Rick Steves' Italy guidebook. This form is designed to help us assemble a large enough group for each departure. Add your name and credit card number as a promise to be there, then pay the guide (cash only) at the start of the tour. Pre-registration is required, and each tour will depart only if at least six people have signed up (6-19 people maximum).

Terms and Conditions

By accessing, browsing and using our website or any of our applications through whatever platform (hereafter collectively referred to as the "website") and/or by completing a reservation, you acknowledge and agree to have read, understand and agree to the terms and conditions that follow

1. THE CONTRACT

By making a booking with our Company, you accept on behalf of yourself and all those named on the booking, including minors and people under a disability, to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. A booking is accepted and becomes definite only from the date when our Company sends a confirmation email. It is at this point that a contract between our Company and the Client comes into existence. These Terms and Conditions shall constitute the entire agreement between our Company and the Client relating to the subject matter herein, and shall constitute a binding agreement. There is no verbal or written; representation, warranty, prior agreement, or description of services, other than as expressed herein. The service to be provided is/are the tour(s) referred to in the booking confirmation.

2. PAYMENT /ACCEPTANCE OF BOOKING/CREDIT CARD

The Company must confirm acceptance of the Client's booking in writing. Payment of the tour is due in cash at the start of each service that the client has booked.The client's credit card details are necessary only to hold the booking. There will be no charges at all on the client's credit card as our company only needs it to confirm the booking. In case the card expires before the date of the service the client needs to contact our company with a new valid card.​

3. CANCELLATION OF A TOUR BY THE CLIENT

Any cancellation request by a Client must be made in writing and be acknowledged in writing by the Company. The date on which the request to cancel is received by the Company will determine the applicable cancellation fees. Cancellation for Tours : The cancellation fees are expressed hereafter as a percentage of the total tour price.

1) Cancellation 3 days or more before the services: 0% of cost of services booked.

2) Cancellation less than 3 days before the services 100% of cost of services booked will be charged by the company.

4. IN THE EVENT OF ROUGH SEA CONDITIONS,WILL THE TOURS BE CANCELLED AND WILL I BE BILLED?

If you are host on an a cruise ship, that due to rough seas does not arrive in port or is late, you are not responsible. If it is not possible to reach your booked destination, alternative services are arranged or you will not be billed.

5. COMPANY POLICY

It is against company policy for our drivers to suggest or take clients to any specific shops or restaurants.

6. COMPLAINTS

If a Client has a complaint against the Company, the Client must first inform the company at the earliest opportunity to allow the grievance to be rectified before any public display of the matter.

Tipping is not included in our service fees,It is never mandatory although it is always appreciated. We do believe that if the guests have been happy with their service, the guide ,assistant and driver should receive a tip as a token of appreciation. Standard gratuities in Europe run between 10 % 25% depending on the service received.

1) Cancellation 4 days or more before the services: 0% of cost of services booked.

2) Cancellation less than 4 days before the services 100% of cost of services booked will be charged by the company.

Is the most stunning archaeological site on the Italian Peninsula and one of the most visited. The ruins of Pompeii are an open air museum where visitors can go back in time and discover a city that had been buried in ashes until 1748. Visitors experience the city much as it existed more than 2000 years ago.

The Villa Poppaea is a Roman villa situated between Naples and Sorrento which dates from the early Imperial period. The villa is a large structure situated in the Roman town of Oplontis (modern day – Torre Annunziata). It was owned by the Emperor Nero and used by his second wife Poppaea Sabina as her main residence when not in Rome. The frescos decorating the walls are among the best preserved , both in form and in colour, of all Imperial Roman frescos. The roof of the building largely survived the eruption thus affording protection from the elements.

Herculaneum

The smaller sister of Pompeii, is a destination for lovers of beauty. Visitors to the ancient city have the rare opportunity to see perfectly intact patrician villas. A miracle of preservation where even the wood and ropes of the 2000 year old city are on display, along with stunning brick work, mosaics, and frescos. The detail with which Herculaneum has been preserved is remarkable considering the violence of the 500 C° volcanic flows which ravaged the city.

Mondo Guide tours

Has anyone taken the Mondo Guide "shared tours" with a special price for RS readers? They apparently do guided tours of Pompeii, Naples, Amalfi Coast, and Capri at a fraction of the usual cost, but I believe they require a certain number to sign up in order to do the tour. I did check the website and it looks like with the RS discount, a trip to Amalfi Coast could cost about 50 Euros rather than 300 or so. Read about it in the Naples section of RS Italy book. Are there better options for guided tours rather than taking a bus around the Amalfi coast area?

I did the Mondo Amalfi Coast tour in late September last year, and it was a very good experience. I don't remember what we paid, but it was an all-day trip in a smallish bus (or oversized van) with huge windows. There were about 8-10 of us in all I think. We left from Sorrento and stopped at Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Our guide was Patricia, who is an Irish woman living in Italy, and she was terrific. I really enjoyed the tour--there was an hour or so on our own in each town after Patricia briefed us a bit, and she told us tales of the sirens of ancient times as the driver navigated the astonishing road--and felt it was a nice alternative to either a huge bus or a pricey private driver. I wouldn't hesitate to sign up with them again. Cynthia

Thanks ponygirl! I am debating whether to try to schedule on a Mondo Guide tour as it sounds pretty good, but also am wondering about taking the boat along the Amalfi coast, stopping at some of the towns. Lots of things to think about....! Wish there was time to do everything!

I could see doing that instead. My friend whom I traveled with gets seasick, so for us it was an easy decision to do the Mondo tour. Either way I don't think you will be disappointed. If you stay in Sorrento there are many options for exploring the area. Cynthia

An Insider's Guide Of How To Visit Pompeii (& Make The Most Of It)

• Travelers should be prepared to walk a lot while visiting Pompeii.
• A guided tour is an excellent way to learn about Pompeii; alternately, do your research ahead of time to fully appreciate the sights.
• Consider venturing to other sites near Pompeii if visiting for multiple days.

Two years ago, I was traveling overland (and ferry) from Warsaw in Poland to Tunisia in North Africa. As I journeyed down through Italy, I couldn't help but visit Naples (originally the ancient colonial Greek city, Neopolis ). There are countless ancient Roman archeological sites in and around Naples, but arguably the most dramatic attraction is the ash-covered Roman city of Pompeii .

I have seen countless archeological sites all around the world and many ancient Roman sites and I can say that Pompeii really does live up to the hype. Here's what to know to make the most of your trip.

Pompeii Is One Of The Very Best Ancient Roman Archeological Sites

Pompeii lives up to the hype and visitors can see a well-preserved mid-sized roman city frozen in time.

The day I visited Pompeii was a stiflingly hot summer's day. But I made the most of seeing Pompeii and walked all through it. I discovered that to really explore everything in Pompeii, visitors need to spend two or three days there.

My only regret in Naples is not seeing more of the many ancient Roman and Greek attractions in the area (and spending more time in Pompeii). Still, I visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Archeological Museum of Naples . These are three of the top ancient ruins in and around Naples. As a minimum, tourists really should plan to visit all three of these.

Pompeii is the 'big' city preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, Herculaneum is the ancient Roman resort town (and where many of the major archeological discoveries have been made), and the Archeological Museum of Naples is where many of the recovered artifacts are on display.

When visiting the Archeological Museum of Naples, ask to see the " Secret Room " where 250 of the erotic artifacts deemed too explicit for a younger audience are on display.

Top Roman Attractions In & Around Naples:

• Flavian Amphitheater (Pozzuoli)

The site really is massive. It was a Roman city of around 10,000 inhabitants and around two-thirds of Pompeii has been excavated (and most of that is open to the public). Some of its monuments are brilliantly preserved. The stone Amphitheater of Pompeii is the largest monument in Pompeii, and visitors are free to walk through its corridors and around its arena.

In my opinion, the excellent state of preservation of Pompeii (and other Vesuvius sites) is much better than other famous sites like Ephesus in Turkey.

Pompeii Forum: What To Know About Visiting The Former Beating Heart Of The City

What to know about visiting pompeii for the first time, pompeii is easy to reach from naples, but it is a large site with plenty of walking.

The easiest way to get to Pompeii from downtown Naples is by taking the suburban train bound for Salerno (the train departs from Napoli Centrale aka the Naples Central Station). Just get off at the train stop "Pompeii" and the entrance to the archeological site is across the road.

• Opening Hours: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (closes 5:00 pm in winter)
• Admission Fee: 22 Euros (about USD 24) - one day

The entry fee is approximately USD 24 for one day for the Pompeii archeological site, but it can be worth booking a multi-day entry ticket and one that includes entry to other sites (such as Stabiae and Oplontis). A great source of English language information for the Pompeii archeological site is Pompeii.org .

Take water, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection when visiting Pompeii.

Visitors should take water with them (there are refilling stations around the site), wear walking shoes, and have protection from the sun (especially if visiting in the summer).

Villa Of The Mysteries: What To Know About One Of The Best-Preserved Roman Villas Of Pompeii

Guided tours are a great way to get introduced to pompeii (or read up in advance), guided tours are encouraged; alternatively, do plenty of research on the history and monuments of pompeii before visiting.

Most people visiting Pompeii explore by themselves on self-guided tours. But I would encourage first-time visitors to take a guided tour — just to help bring the many ancient buildings and various structures to life. Without a tour guide, many of the key historical buildings full of history and significance are just passed over as 'another' ruined building.

A tour guide can point out hidden attractions (like ancient graffiti and what it says), how the Romans lived (e.g. the ancient snack bars of the city), and why Pompeii was once thought of as a sin city (see the many brothels and erotic art in the city).

• Guided tours can either be booked in advance or requested at the site between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm at the main entrance (near the train stop).

A compromise is to take an audio tour (available for rent) or to read extensively about ancient Pompeii before visiting. There are very few information panels explaining the significance of monuments and attractions around the ancient city.
