We just booked our first cruise with MSC on the MSC EURIBIA for 4/27/24- 5/4/24.  The itinerary is at the bottom.    A couple of people have recommended the Flam Railway as a must do.  Would you recommend the  2 1/2 hour excursion  (SCENIC FLAM RAILWAY)  or the 6 hour excursion ( AMAZING NATURE VIEWS ON THE FAMOUS FLAM RAILWAY) and why?  Thank you so much for your feedback.

AMAZING NATURE VIEWS ON THE FAMOUS FLAM RAILWAY - 6 HOURS

Once you are ready for the steep roads and mountain tunnels of this region, you can sit back and enjoy the ride through spectacular countryside. Leaving the port of Flåm, we will traverse a long tunnel that takes us to Gudvangen, and the coach will climb through the steep, narrow Nærøy valley. We will stop at the Tvindefossen waterfalls, a twin cascade of two fabulous falls. The excursion continues to the town of Voss, prettily located on the Vangvatnet Lake. We will board a train to continue our outing across a range of stunning natural landscapes, before reaching Myrdal. Here, at 867 metres above sea level, we will change trains and continue down the breathtaking Flåm valley, travelling on the world famous Flåm Line. The train will pass by Kjosfossen waterfall to allow passengers enjoy the lovely view before terminating at Flåm station, on the Sognefjord, from where we can walk back to the ship. Lunch included.

SCENIC FLAM RAILWAY - 2 1/2 HOURS

Take a trip on one of the most interesting railways in the world and be rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery in Norway. The Flåm Railway is a remarkable piece of engineering which provides wonderful vistas of the mountains and waterfalls that characterise this beautiful part of Norway. Boarding the train at Flåm Station, you'll travel along the Flåm River, which is one of the best salmon rivers in the west country, to Myrdal Station at an altitude of 2.845 feet (861 m) above sea level. Admire the fabulous scenery passing by along the 12.5 miles (21 km) track, including the sheer drop of the Rjoande Waterfall and the impressive peak of Vibmesnosi Mountain. In order to climb the 985 feet (300 m) Myrdalsberg, the railroad is built on 4 levels. As your train stands on the 4th level, you can see all of the other 3 levels. To ensure the best possible views the train will slow down at the finest sections, so you have time to capture the dramatic scenery. There will be a brief stop at Kjosfossen Waterfall to photograph the spectacular 305-feet (93 m) cascading waterfall. At Myrdal, the train turns around and returns to Flåm.

I would post this on the Northern Europe and Baltic Sea Ports of Call board. There are some very helpful people there who have lots of good advice.

Thank you!  I will post it there too.  I don’t think I can remove it from here.

I am booked on the 6 hour tour this August.  Having done the extended train in Skagway before I'm expecting a similar experience, with a much longer scenic train ride as opposed to a simple round trip.

I just posted this in another thread but here's my recommendation here too in case it's useful for anyone!

We did Flåm a few weeks ago on Virtuosa and would highly recommend the following:

Book the railway one way separately from the cruise excursions, and take it all the way to Vatnehalsen (which is one stop before the end) , get off there and do the Flåm zipline if you're feeling brave! From the bottom of the zipline you can also take bikes which means you can take a beautiful cycle down the mountain back to the ship (takes about an hour with no stops). Make sure to tell them at the top of the zipline you want to take bikes as well as you pay for it all in one go. Honestly such a brilliant experience! Does require some bravery for the zipline but 100% worth it!

kernow

I've also replied in the other thread too but for anyone else, if you just want the train ride up to Myrdal and back (the 2 1/2 hour trip) don't book it with MSC. The station is right at the dock (2 min walk) and it's a regular Norwegian train which connects with the mainline to Bergen, use' Norways Best' website to book yourself. Not sure how much MSC charge but it will be cheaper to book directly.

The scenery is stunning and we thought it was well worth doing (not brave enough for the Zip line or even the bikes!).

Heartgrove

We have traveled on a portion of this excursion. According to the MSC excursion description of the six hour version uses a coach bus from Flam to Voss, a scheduled train between Voss and Myrdal, and the excursion train between Myrdal back to Flam. The highlight of the coach ride would be if they travel on the one-way road that passes the Stalheimskieva.  Google currently shows it closed but we rode down this road when we arranged our own "Norway in A Nutshell" in 2017. The train ride between Voss and Myrdal is very picturesque as the train climbs from Voss to Myrdal. Check YouTube for videos.

With regards to MSC excursion prices, we have found them to be very affordable compared to other cruise lines. We used them exclusively last year for a cruise in the Mediterranean and have booked five of six excursions for our MSC British Isles in September.

Also the Flam train ride does sell out daily so do not think that tickets can be bought that morning. Pre-arrange the excursion you choose.

Thanks

Very important advice, this isn't one you can leave to chance, especially if there are several ships arriving that day.

On that note, the impact of cruise ships had caused a lot of local resentment, and there are now limits on the largest ships docking when they are not the only ship there so that may help with ticket availability...

Keep in mind.  Flam train ride up to Myrdal on your own (much cheaper than ship tour) the ticket must purchase FAR IN ADVANCE because anytime there is a ship in port all good departure times ALWAYS SOLD OUT (cruise line reserved them all).

Been there, done that 6 hour excursion you're talking about. The historic train is just done one way and it is a very short ride. The other trains are regular Norwegian inter cities with tourists in the mix. This explains the difference. Want to see anything more, go with the larger excursion, otherwise it only going on the historic train and return on regular inter cities. As you state those shore excursions book very early and sometimes they're only available through the ship once they purchase entire blocks for themselves.

Have a nice day!

Popular Things to Do in Flam

Find things to do in flam on viator, flam cruise tips, activities, and overview, food and drink in flam.

Scenic Flam is a good place to try Norwegian specialties like lamb in cabbage, smoked salmon, cloudberries and whipped cream, and goat cheese. It's also a fine setting for an ice cold glass of aquavit (a 40-proof potato-based liquor invented in Norway) or a beer.

Local Eats: Cafe Flam Marina is good for light snacks with scenic fjord views and outdoor seating. Flamsbrygga offers several dining options. Furukroa Cafe serves up game meatballs, venison burgers, sandwiches, ice cream and waffles in a cafeteria setting. (Hours vary; open 8 a.m. 8 p.m. June 1 to Sept. 2, 2018) Flamstova Restaurant is a sit-down restaurant with a lunch buffet from noon to 3 p.m. And the Aegir Brewery & Pub is open daily from noon for local beer tasting and serves pub fare (burgers, ribs, fish soup) after 4 p.m. The building is done in Viking style with a central hearth and wood furniture draped in furs.

Gourmet Option: Restaurant Arven at the Fretheim Hotel specializes in fresh ingredients from local producers. Along with an excellent lunch menu (two or three courses of fish or meat, as well as sandwiches) and dinner buffet, the restaurant serves up panoramic fjord views. (Offers breakfast from 6:30 to 10 a.m., and dinner from 6.30 to 9.30 p.m., May 1 to Sept. 30, 2018. For a more casual alternative, the Fretheim Hotel team also runs the train restaurant, serving a mix of Norwegian fare and pizza topped with local meats, cheeses and produce.)

Don't Miss in Flam

Flam Railway: This celebrated railway is considered one of the world's most exciting train journeys. The steep 50 minute, 12 mile route between Flam and the mountain village of Myrdal twists up (and then back down) nearly 3,000 feet, through 20 mountain tunnels. The scenery includes thundering waterfalls, the Flam River and Flam Valley. Cyclists can bring bikes on the train (for an extra fee), disembark in Myrdal and return to Flam on the Rallarvegen cycling route, a two-hour downhill ride. Hikers can do the same, but it will take five hours (or you can purchase tickets such that you reboard the train in Berekvam. The Flam Railway offers nine to 10 daily departures in the summer, and they generally sell out. If you wish to book independently, you can either purchase tickets for a group of 10 or more online, in advance, or you can buy tickets the day of your outing. (Just go early -- tickets sold out for all departures by 10 a.m. the day we visited -- and be prepared for crowds at the train station and long queues to purchase or pick up tickets.) The benefit of a ship's excursion on the train is that you'll disembark the train at Vatnahalsen, the stop prior to Myrdal, and have a bit of time to look around and stretch your legs at this more scenic stop before heading back to Flam.

The Flam Railway Museum chronicles the impressive construction of the world's steepest normal-track adhesion railway, with photos, videos and old train cars. It's located in the old station building, just to the left of the train tracks, and is free to all visitors.

Aurland Fjord Lookout: A glass barrier is all that separates travelers from the water 2,000 feet below at the dramatic Aurland Fjord Lookout (called Stegastein locally). The wood platform is either a two-hour hike or 10-minute drive from Aurland (five miles northeast of Flam) along Old Laerdal Road. Take a tour, bus or drive yourself. While in Aurland, you can also stop at the shoe factory for a tour and some shoe shopping.

Laerdal: With richly carved dragon-like animals on its exterior, the 12th century Borgund Church is considered one of the most beautiful of Norway's 28 remaining stave churches. The Wild Salmon Center on the banks of the Laerdal River features an observatory, exhibitions, film and fly-tying work shop. Part of the fun is getting here. The 1.5-hour drive from Flam (public buses go here) includes the world's longest tunnel, at 24 miles.

Otternes Farm Museum: A scenic 2.5-mile bike trip or hike north along the fjord takes visitors to Otternes with over two dozen well-preserved 17th century buildings, including a farmhouse, cookhouse, storehouse and barn. In the summer, with traditional food making and yarn dying demonstrations, as well as goats, sheep and rabbits, the farm is a great choice for families. (Open June 1 to Sept. 15, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Undredal: One of few places in Norway where goat cheese is still made the old fashioned way -- from pure goat milk -- Undredal is a town of about 100 people and 400 goats. Don't miss the sweet, caramel-flavored brown goat cheese, little known outside of Norway; you can try it at the country store or cafe. Undredal is also home to Scandinavia's smallest stave church, circa 1147, with just 40 seats and folk decorations. Undredal is 7.5 miles north of Flam; you can get there by boat, car or organized tour.

To make the most of your visit to this gorgeous area in Norway, it’s recommended that you plan to ride both of these popular railways during your stay. Tours in Flåm

Flåm is a charming village of 350 people, nestled on the shores of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, Sognefjord. It’s located in Aurland municipality. Thanks to its stunning nature, dramatic mountains and narrow fjord, Flåm (and its surroundings – Nærøyfjord, Aurland and Gudvangen) was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Over the years, Flåm has become one of the most important tourist destinations in Norway, due to its rich nature, popular steep railway “Flåmsbana”, majestic scenery, and views of the longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord. The local river has been well known for salmon fishing for hundreds of years, dating back to the first British tourists that visited the area for sport fishing.

The village of Flåm is a peaceful destination, suitable for nature lovers. It offers stunning views, such as the one from the Stegastein viewpoint. Only a 30 minute drive from Flåm, following one of the 18 Norwegian National Scenic routes (from Aurland in the direction of Lærdal), you’re able to enjoy a fantastic view over Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by stunning mountains, formed millions of years ago.

More spectacular views are waiting to be discovered in the surroundings of the Stalheim hotel, a popular destination between travelers and artists from all over the world. The hotel offers unique views of Nærøy valley, from 368 meters above sea level (1207 feet). Stalheim hotel has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, when its  strategic location made it a perfect stopover between Bergen and other inland cities.

The nearby village of Undredal, invites you to explore the serene beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord. From the shore of the fjord, you will soak in the atmosphere of Norway. Its picturesque mountains and valleys have even been an inspiration for Disney’s Frozen.

Don’t miss the opportunity to discover Flåm, its peaceful nature and picturesque views!

The 6 hour tour gives you a wonderful overview of the entire area; the shorter trip is just up the mountain and down….if you have the time, I’d definitely do the longer tour which includes the Flam RR, but much more.

@janetcbl have answered your questions. If you choose the short tour only by rail, I would suggest that you compare the price at Norways Best - exactly the same tour. The railway must be pre-booked - Will be sold out at the day.

I would also opt for the longer excursion.  If you only did the shorter one, that leaves you multiple hours with not much to do except explore the small town of Flam (unless you arranged something else).  I'd prefer to be busy all day.  I'm pretty certain the longer tour is the one that I took when I was in Flam several years ago.  I enjoyed it.

Thank you so much.  I booked the longer tour.  Is this a nice tour for Hellesylt?  It’s 2.5 Hours.  Someone on another post said we need to see GEIRANGER FJORD.

SCENIC CRUISE TO GEIRANGERFJORD

On the scenic cruise from Hellesylt, you will discover the scenery of Geirangerfjord and understand why this part of Norway has attracted travelers for over a century. The fjord is like a blue ribbon carved into a mountainous landscape, providing visitors with access to a remote corner of Norway. Geirangerfjord has been added to the UNESCO's World Heritage List due to the breathtaking scenery and has been described as "the world's most beautiful fjord". Take this opportunity to get closer to the fjord by leisurely gliding through the dramatic landscape and feel the presence of the towering mountains surrounding you. As you cruise through Geirangerfjord a guide will tell stories about the people who defied the up to 1500-metre tall mountains to make a living on the steep mountainsides and the small farmsteads clinging to rocky ledges. The tour will pass at the Seven Sisters Waterfall where water pummels from a 300m steep cliffside down to the fjord below before returning you safely back to the pier.

If you are only cruising to Hellesylt, and not to Geiranger itself, yes I would recommend a cruise along the rest of the fjord. It’s quite stunning.

I'm not sure if this was the best itinerary.  I booked it without a lot of research because it was a great deal. Based on the itinerary we will not cruise by Geiranger so I booked it as an excursion.  I think this cruise will give me a flavor of the area but I may need to book another cruise to really go to all the wonderful ports.

Norway is banning most ships to Flam and Geiranger, so I'd honestly say if you got a good deal on this then you did great!  I chose my norway cruise deliberately for only two ports - Flam and Geiranger, and Olden wound up being an unexpected highlight (the loen skylift opened 3 days before we arrived, but I didn't know about it at the time of booking).

The only thing I'd recommend is to ask Hallasm their opinion on whether there are tours from    Hellesylt that can also get you to see the Geiranger viewpoints from both land and sea (if I am reading your tour description correctly, I think the tour you are considering includes the Geiranger sail in which is also wonderful but not the amazing viewpoints by land).  It seems  like  it might be possible if you have a long port in Hellasylt, and on a clear day those views are spectacular (but unfortunately you'd need to book that tour before you could know if the day would be clear).

Oh, and I'd also recommend considering Stegastein before or after the flam railway if you have time.

Thank you.  We booked the longer tour for the Flam Railway.

For  Hellesylt we’re trying to decide which excursion is best.   @Kitkat343 suggested we ask you if there are excursions in Geiranger with viewpoints from both land and sea?

Below are 2 of the excursions that we were looking at offered by the cruise line.   Do you recommend either one of these?  Or is there another excursion that I should look at?

SCENIC CRUISE TO GEIRANGERFJORD (2 1/2 Hours).

STRYN AND LOEN SKYLIFT (6 1/2 Hours)

Hellesylt is a small but important village at the head of the Synnulvsfjord, a branch of the mighty Storfjord, and the starting point of this half-day tour. The scenic drive will allow you to almost immediately see the beautiful Hellesylt waterfall on the way up to Europe's deepest lake, Hornindalsvannet, with tranquil and crystal-clear water 514 metres deep. Passing through the village of Stryn, you will reach the lovely Stryn lake, known for its delightful turquoise colour. Your destination is at Oppstryn and the Jostedal Glacier National Park Centre to admire the interesting exhibits beneath and on the glacier. The centre's garden contains botanical specimens of wild fauna and medicinal herbs from this harsh environment as well as a unique collection of stones. After the visit, the tour continues to the Skylift in Loen to ride on the brand-new cable car taking you up to mount Hoven 1011 metres above the sea - around 200 metres above the tree line in this part of Norway. Enjoy the spectacular views of the fjord and villages below as well as the surrounding mountain scenery. During your stay at Hoven, you have the possibility to enjoy a short walk to soak up the scenery around and have a break at the restaurant for a delicious lunch. The return to Hellesylt is via the same road with a photo stop to admire the old stone bridge built in 1792.

Correction. Only old ships are banned in The UNESCO Heritage Fjords today.  'Zero emission zones' in the fjords to Flåm and Geiranger will be introduced in 2026 and with an expected exemption for Bio-LNG propulsion ships until 2030.

MSC EURIBIA is a brand new LNG powered ship and is not banned from sailing to Geiranger. Could be because there are too many ships already in Geiranger.

The problem in Hellesylt is possibilities for excursions. There is a ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger which is an option.

I have no experience with private excursions from Hellesylt - here are a few links https://www.norwayexcursions.com/en/destinations-in-norway/hellesylt/ https://www.westnorwaytravel.com/destinations/hellesylt

Sorry - meant to say they will be banning most ships in the future.  Will the zero emission zone regulations also apply to Hellesylt next year?

40 minutes ago, kitkat343 said: Will the zero emission zone regulations also apply to Hellesylt next year?

The Zero Emission Zone is only Geiranger fjord from 2026 - it will still be possible for diesel-powered cruise ships to sail to Hellesylt.

Thank you so much for letting me know.  This would be a very long day, but this tour from Hellesylt would visit everything in the area ( Dalsnibba, Briksdal, Loen skylift). https://www.toursbylocals.com/geiranger-briksdal-olden-loen   .   You'd miss the spectacular sail in to Geiranger though.  Please note that all the views are very  weather dependent and this tour includes a lot of travel that would be totally worth it on a clear day, but not so much if it is cloudy.  And unfortunately you'd have to book it in advance.  Please also note that the Briksdal Glacier has been hit hard by global warming, and as long as you know that in advance you will enjoy the beautiful ride there and hike to the glacier.

Thanks

Is the longer tour thru the ship or independent?  If independent could you advise tour company. Many thanks

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
