The Vacationer

NCL – Booksafe Travel Protection

In my opinion, when it comes to having fun while exploring new countries and destinations, absolutely nothing beats taking a cruise. The moment you set foot on the ship your vacation has officially started, and you do not have to worry about dining and entertainment.

However, cruises can be expensive, and in order to get the best deal, many travelers opt to book months to a year in advance. The issue with this that travelers cannot predict the future, which means that things can change and taking time off for your cruise may no longer be possible. This could be due to anything, an illness, loss of employment, death of a loved one. And that is what can happen before the trip; there’s an endless number of things that can happen while you’re in the middle of your vacation.

Booksafe Travel Protection (BTP) is Norwegian Cruise Line’s travel insurance. With BTP you’re covered for many of the many things that can go wrong. For example, lost luggage and medical expenses transportation.

Medical Expense Transportation is the big one. There are many scary stories online of people that have been so sick on a cruise, that a helicopter was needed to transport them to the nearest hospital, which comes with a scary bill of up $50,000.

The prices are very reasonable. For a fare of $1000, the BTP price is $99 for Standard Plan and $159 for the Platinum Plan. Rates depend on the cruise fare.

Book Safe Travel Insurance Question for Medical Evacuation on NCL

Red-Sol

I always get some form of insurance for any of our cruises. I sleep better knowing I have it. My biggest fear has always been what would happen if either of us needed Emergency Evacuation. I have also always heard that Medical Evacuation could easily run over $100,000 so I always get that amount as a minimum. We have an upcoming cruise in April to Bermuda on Prima. I started looking at BookSafe Travel Protection through NCL and noticed that their Standard Plan has up to $20,000 for Medical Evacuation while the Platinum Plan has up to $50,000 for Evacuation...and it got me thinking that maybe the numbers I have always heard about for Medical Evacuation have been too high. So my question is do any of you out there have any thoughts as to what the actual costs of a medical evacuation might really be? Thanks!

This article might offer some info as to price ranges, which vary widely as expected - $20,000 would be on the low end.  Probably a good idea to check into one's own health plan coverage as to the fine prints, ours supposed to include worldwide emergency care.

https://health.costhelper.com/air-ambulances.html

Thanks

The broker who answers questions on the insurance forum said the average he has seen is in the $25,000 range. Remember that evacuation in travel insurance  means transfer from one hospital to another if you need a higher level of care. It does not necessarily mean you will be flown directly to the US to a hospital of your choice. Usually people are treated locally and are flown home by commercial air when they are able to travel.

Evacuation does not mean air/sea rescue. That is performed by the appropriately trained and equipped division of the military from the nearest country capable of providing the service. When it happens, there is no charge until the patient is handed over to the civilian medical care system.

Thank you very much I have learned something new from you! I always assumed that evacuation meant being flown off the ship to somewhere.

You might want to spend some time in the travel insurance forum:  https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/499-cruisetravel-insurance/

The broker who is present in that forum, Steve, from TripInsuranceStore is very helpful.  You should visit his site, educate yourself a bit and then feel free to call him.  He and his staff (there are only a couple others on staff) are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.   www.tripinsurancestore.com

Besides the excellent advice above, you may also want to look into an annual membership with Medjet, which will transport you home from one hospital to another (as long as you are at least 150 miles from home).

To be more clear, MJA will transport you from the hospital where you are an "inpatient" at least 150 miles from home, to the hospital of your choice in the USA (for USA-based clients).  That could be your home hospital or some specialty hospital (but then, getting home would be "on you" after that).

You would need to be stable enough to travel, which makes sense, although it's with full air ambulance if required.

When we travel (e.g., pre-COVID!), we get an annual plan which then covers our major trips as well as any short notice visits to friends/family or for business, when we don't need regular travel insurance, but we'd prefer to have any extended hospital stay be at home, where the medical staff know us, if we are able to be transported, etc.

They do have "per trip" coverage as well.

And we strongly recommend TripInsuranceStore.com - but CALL them, as the fine print can really matter; they can discuss your specific situation, which might not be clear from limited online summaries.

I 2nd this. Steve is extremely nice and helpful, as well as knowledgeable. He helped us choose insurance for our trip which starts tomorrow!

Just a Blanket Thank You for all the replies. I am a little stunned at my own lack of knowlege regarding the way some of the insurance plans actually work along with the varied options and will be taking everyone's advice to heart.

Travel Insurance

An illness, an accident or an unexpected situation can arise before or during any type of vacation. Such an event might cause you to cut short your cruise or cause your trip to be canceled altogether. Unfortunately, most cruise lines impose penalties for canceling a cruise, up to and including loss of the entire cruise price.

Because a cruise is a significant investment, most cruise lines offer some form of insurance to protect their passengers from financial loss in the event of an emergency. Details and prices vary from cruise line to cruise line, as do coverage limits and exclusions.

If you decide to purchase insurance, you will have two options, to go with the cruise line's plan or to use our independent insurance provider, Generali Global Assistance. Use the summaries below to compare policies and prices.

Generali can provide insurance coverage to all customers, regardless of their country of citizenship, except residents of the province of Quebec, Canada.

For more information or a complete copy of a policy, ask your Vacations To Go cruise counselor.

What does TravelSafe insurance cover?

Travelsafe travel insurance plans and costs, which travelsafe insurance plan is best for me, can you buy a travelsafe plan online, what isn’t covered by travelsafe, travelsafe travel insurance, recapped.

  • Covers up to $300 redepositing points and miles on eligible canceled award flights.
  • Optional add-on protection for business equipment or sports rentals.
  • Multi-trip or year-long plans aren’t available.

Are you wondering whether or not you should buy travel insurance? There are several travel insurance companies out there offering protection from unexpected events like illness, flight cancellations and lost baggage. TravelSafe insurance is one such provider — it features a range of protections to give you peace of mind when on the road.

Let’s take a look at TravelSafe trip insurance, the types of plans it offers and how to choose the right plan for you.

Both TravelSafe plans cover travel mishaps such as trip cancellation, lost luggage and missed connections. They also include some coverage for emergency medical procedures and evacuations. However, the higher-level TravelSafe Classic plan offers additional coverage, such as accidental death and dismemberment coverage and non-medical evacuation.

The amount of coverage for each benefit differs between plans, as well. And additional add-ons (such as Cancel for Any Reason coverage), can be applied to either, for additional fees.

Before you purchase travel insurance , you’ll first want to decide what type of plan you need. There are multiple types available depending on what you’re doing, where you’re going and how much coverage you want.

TravelSafe insurance offers two different plan types: Basic and Classic. Both of them only cover single trips; the company doesn’t sell multi-trip or year-long plans .

TravelSafe Basic

The TravelSafe Basic plan offers a lower level of protection than the company’s more expensive option, TravelSafe Classic.

To get an idea of the cost and coverage you’d get with a TravelSafe Basic plan, we put in a search for a 32-year-old woman going on a two-week trip to multiple countries. The total estimated trip cost was $4,500.

The TravelSafe Basic plan came back with a total cost of $177 and included trip cancellation coverage up to $10,000, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay coverage, and $35,000 for emergency medical , among other benefits.

TravelSafe also offers medical insurance-focused plans through a partnership with Trawick International . These plans are much cheaper than the Basic or Classic options but lack some of the other plans’ benefits.

TravelSafe Classic

As the higher tier of travel insurance, TravelSafe's Classic plan includes greater benefits than TravelSafe Basic. Using the same search parameters, the total cost for a TravelSafe Classic plan came out to $234 — $57 more than the Basic plan.

However, with this level of coverage, policy holders get trip cancellation of up to $100,000, as well as $100,000 worth of emergency medical and $2,500 worth of coverage for lost luggage. This can be a smart plan to purchase if you are traveling with expensive items in your suitcases, such as photography equipment or jewelry.

The two plans compared

The coverage levels vary pretty significantly between TravelSafe's Basic and Classic plans, although the price difference between the two isn’t huge.

Here are some of the most important differences in coverage levels between the two plans:

As we mentioned above, there are different types of coverage available based on your needs. Before you make a purchase, be sure to consider all your options.

If you’re going on a simple, short round trip: TravelSafe Basic might be good enough option.

If you’ll be going on adventurous or longer trips: Consider the TravelSafe Classic, which offers way more coverage for not that much more.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so the TravelSafe Basic option might be enough.

Consider optional add-ons

TravelSafe’s insurance also offers the ability to add extra coverage. This includes rental car insurance , Cancel For Any Reason insurance (CFAR), and accidental death and dismemberment coverage during flights.

See if you have existing coverage

Many credit cards offer travel insurance as a benefit. This insurance is complimentary and automatic as long as you have paid for your travel with your card. While coverage will vary depending on the card you use, you’ll commonly see credit cards cover rental car insurance, trip cancellation insurance, emergency medical insurance and lost luggage insurance.

Before buying any travel insurance plan, check your credit card benefit guides to see what they may already cover.

From the homepage, you’ll want to select the blue box that says “Get a Quote.” You’ll then be taken to a page asking for your personal information, including dates of travel, age and state of residence.

After you’ve filled in the information, you’ll be presented with quotes for both of TravelSafe’s plans. Once you’ve chosen a plan, you’ll go through the checkout process to purchase your travel insurance.

If you’re the type of person who likes to hang out in restaurants and visit museums during your vacation, it’s likely your travel insurance will cover you if something unexpected happens.

However, if you tend to find yourself doing more extreme activities, like skydiving or scuba diving, you’ll want to give the fine print of your travel insurance a closer look. Most plans have specific exclusions for high-risk activities, in addition to acts of self harm and other designated events.

TravelSafe’s two travel insurance plans offer comprehensive coverage for when you’re away from home. Compare the benefits of each before deciding on a purchase — and be sure to double-check whether you already have existing coverage from a travel credit card .

The answer to this question will depend on what type of traveler you are and the kind of trip you’re taking. Do you have a credit card with insurance that seems sufficient, or would you like extra coverage? Either way, it’s a personal decision — you should do whatever gives you peace of mind.

Yes, TravelSafe offers both trip and medical insurance. You’ll want to check out TravelSafe reviews and read up on its plan benefits to decide which coverage level is appropriate for your needs.

Although TravelSafe has just two plans, prices vary based on the trip you’re taking. Factors that may affect the cost of your insurance include the length of your trip, how much it costs, your destination, and whether or not you include any add-on coverage.

Yes, TravelSafe offers international travel insurance. There are two types of products offered by the company, with varying levels of coverage; read TravelSafe insurance reviews to help decide which plan suits you.
