Oasis Abruptly Cancels Rest of Its U.S. Tour

Oasis, the top British pop band, which performed last weekend at Jones Beach, pulled out of the remainder of its American tour Wednesday night. The band's manager, Marcus Russell, issued a statement citing ''internal difficulties.''

A person knowledgeable about the band's workings said the cancellation followed an altercation between Liam and Noel Gallagher, the brothers who lead the band, just before it was to begin a concert in Fort Mill, S.C. Concerts in Atlanta and in West Palm Beach, Orlando and Tampa, Fla., have been canceled.

Oasis defined a generation. Oasis have undoubtably been one of the single biggest influences on my life. They influence the way I walk, talk, dress, the other bands I listen to, the mates I hang around with and the misspent nights/weekends I've lost!

Seeing Oasis live was always an event (usually a big stadium or arena show due to their popularity). Its something you'd look forward to for weeks/months well basically since you first managed to secure your ticket.

The gigs themselves, I honestly find it hard to put into words a description that does this justice. From the moment they stepped on stage how could anyone fail to be transfixed by the greatest frontman in the world ever LIam Gallagher. The sheer euphoria of thousands of people singing every word of various anthems back at the band with as much passion, if not more as you'd find most of the same audience singing to their football teams on a Saturday afternoon.

Oasis were us and we were Oasis, a working class band with a laddish working class following. That may be sneered at by sections of the media (the term 'lad-rock' was banded about) but when your standing in a field/stadium/arena with thousands of like minded individuals watching Oasis the world pretty much starts and ends there.

BRITAIN'S OASIS SCUTTLES U.S. TOUR

Internal differences' may lead to disbanding.

Oasis, the troubled British supergroup headed by the fighting Gallagher brothers, may have given its final performance Tuesday night at Nissan Pavilion. Songwriter and lead guitarist Noel Gallagher, 29, older brother of hot-tempered singer Liam, flew home yesterday after the band's last-minute cancellation of a Wednesday concert in Charlotte.

Earlier this month, it appeared Liam, 23, had quit the band when he failed to perform at a London taping for "MTV Unplugged." He remained in England with his girlfriend, actress Patsy Kensit, when Oasis flew to the United States to continue its tour. Oasis did several concerts without Liam, who eventually rejoined the group. When the band appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York on Sept. 6, Liam spat and threw beer at the audience.

A statement from Oasis's management company on Thursday reported: "Oasis have hit internal differences on their ninth tour of the United States, which has resulted in the tour being pulled two-thirds of the way through. It is unlikely their immediate touring commitment will be fulfilled."

But the end may be at hand for the band, whose 1995 album, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory," has sold 9.5 million copies worldwide. The Sun, a London tabloid, said in today's edition that its unnamed sources had "established that it was more serious than anything that had gone before." However, according to Lisa Markowitz, publicity director for Epic Records, the band's American label, "there is no breakup."

This is a big story in the United States, where "Morning Glory" has sold 3.2 million copies, thanks in great part to heavy exposure on MTV. But in England, it is huge. In a country with only 58 million people (compared with 264 million in the United States), the band has sold an astonishing 3.4 million copies of "Morning Glory" and has become the greatest pop sensation since the Beatles.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney recently noted: "I take it as an amazing tribute that, 30 years on, these kids are copying what we were doing then."

Last month, Oasis played for 250,000 fans at the Knebworth open-air festival -- the biggest paying audience for a single act in the history of British rock-and-roll. News of a split will rock England, says Rajesh Mirchandani, an entertainment reporter for the BBC.

"The mood is sort of confused because no one knows exactly what's happening," Mirchandani said from London yesterday afternoon. "Noel was certainly very quiet when he arrived back at Heathrow -- with a very large bodyguard." The rest of the band was flying back from Atlanta last night.

Mirchandani bemoaned the problems of his country's biggest band at a time "when British music is at one of its highest points in years in terms of creativity." He doubted Oasis could continue without either of the Gallaghers.

"Both are integral members, and there's a spark between them. That's one of the reasons they have caught the imagination so much, the family thing. However much they might hate each other, they are inextricably linked."

There were no apparent problems at Oasis's Nissan Pavilion show, which drew about 12,000 people to the 25,000-capacity venue near Manassas. There were no reports of on- or offstage squabbles, and the band was apparently in a good mood, signing autographs and talking to people backstage.

Oasis was due to perform Wednesday at the Charlotte Hornets' training center, but band members failed to show up for a 5 p.m. sound check. The Sun reported the band had a major dispute the night before. Soon after, the show's promoters were called to the production office, where a band representative handed them a statement that said that "due to unforeseen circumstances, the show has been canceled and we will not reschedule." It may now be time for some mourning glory.

It’s been nearly 12 years since Oasis last played live, but that hasn’t stopped the beloved U.K. band from burnishing its legacy with such projects as the 2016 documentary “Oasis: Supersonic.” That film began and ended with Oasis’ career-defining, box office record-breaking 1996 U.K. concerts in front of more than 250,000 people at Knebworth, which will now receive their own full documentary treatment this fall.

“Oasis Knebworth 1996” will arrive in theaters around the world on Sept. 23, with tickets going on sale on Aug. 10. Blessed with the full cooperation of Oasis’ famously feuding brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who serve as executive producers, the project was directed by Jake Scott, who helmed the video for Oasis’ 1995 single “Morning Glory,” Scott previously directed memorable ‘90s rock videos such as R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” and Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days,” among many others.

According to a release, the film “is told entirely in the moment through the eyes of the fans who were there” and is built around “never-before-seen archive concerts and backstage footage,” as well as interviews with Oasis’ members and organizers of the concerts. Sony Music Entertainment is financing and distributing the project, which will be released theatrically by Trafalgar Releasing (Roger Waters’ “The Wall,” Coldplay’s “A Head Full of Dreams”).

Popular on Variety

Staged on Aug. 10-11, 1996 and representing the arguable peak of the Britpop era, the Knebworth shows crowned a whirlwind two-year period for Oasis which saw the group ascend from small U.K. clubs to the top of the charts with the albums “Definitely Maybe” and “What’s the Story Morning Glory?” Thirteen of the 20 songs were drawn from those two albums, while new songs such as “My Big Mouth” and “It’s Gettin’ Better (Man!)” and an orchestra-backed cover of the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” rounded out the set lists.

“Knebworth for me was the Woodstock of the ‘90s,” says Liam Gallagher. “It was all about the music and the people. I can’t remember much about it, but I’ll never forget it. It was biblical.”

After years of in-fighting, Oasis split for good in 2009, with the Gallagher brothers moving on to solo projects. In April 2020, Noel Gallagher released a demo for a previously unknown 2000s-era Oasis song, “Don’t Stop,” marking the first unheard music from the group since its breakup.

Liam Gallagher quit Oasis’ 1996 US tour ‘to avoid fight with American rock star’

Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan, has been sharing some curious tales of planned fights and cowardly retreats relating to Liam from when the group supported Oasis on tour in 1996

Liam Gallagher went running home to the UK during an Oasis tour of the USA over fears of being forced to fight a member of their support band, according to a rival rocker.

The 47-year-old Wonderwall singer has a hard man image and is famed for his famous spats with fellow musicians like Damon Albarn, Robbie Williams, and his own brother, Noel.

However it seems the Mancunian singer's tough exterior might hide a cowardly interior as it has been claimed he once fled America to avoid a planned fight with Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan.

Mark, 55, and his band supported Oasis during their 1996 (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Tour – which was cut short while the band were in America.

Now Mark is lifting the lid on a feud that he claims erupted when Liam tried to stomp his authority over the Screaming Trees.

The Sun reports Mark writing in his memoir about an early encounter with Liam turning sour when the Oasis star mocked his own band and acted in a “bullying” manner.

Liam is then said to have gone running scared when Mark challenged him to a physical fight when the two groups were due to reunite in Florida – but Oasis aborted their tour before reaching the Sunshine State.

Mark writes: “ Liam Gallagher was an obvious poser, a playground bully. Like all bullies, he was also a total p***y.

“He had quit and bailed before I could have a go at him before his promised playground battle royale in Miami.

“Typical, I thought. That phoney motherf***er had p***ed his pants and gone home to mama before I had a chance to blow this whole thing up myself.”

Mark claims he stuck up for his band when Liam sarcastically referred to them as the “Howling Branches” – with the Oasis star “lunging” towards him when he stuck up for his group.

Describing a scene where Liam allegedly launched into a “half-dance” half lunge, while “gesticulating crazily”, Mark said: “He intended for it to look intimidating. He looked f***ing pathetic.”

More recently, Liam has looked unrecognisable after sporting a scraggly beard and hiding under a coat.

Liam Gallagher quit Oasis’ 1996 US tour ‘to avoid planned fight with Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan’

  • From Simon Boyle's Bizarre Column
  • Published : 21:03, 3 May 2020
  • Updated : 11:38, 4 May 2020

IT was one of the big public bust-ups that revealed the true tensions in Oasis.

But a huge fallout between Noel and Liam Gallagher wasn’t the only reason why the Britpop icons cut short their 1996 US tour.

Liam Gallagher quit a US Oasis tour after being intimidated by a support act in 1996, it is claimed

American rocker Mark Lanegan, from the band Screaming Trees, who supported Oasis in the States, claims Liam headed home to avoid a planned fight between the pair.

They clashed backstage after Liam’s attempts to intimidate him fell flat.

Mark then proposed they turned their feud physical when they reunited again in Miami — but Liam was on the plane home.

Mark recalls: “I detested bullies and refused to put up with them.

“Liam Gallagher was an obvious poser, a playground bully.

“Like all bullies, he was also a total p***y.

American rocker Mark Lanegan branded Liam 'an obvious poser' and 'a total p***y'

“He had quit and bailed before I could have a go at him before his promised playground battle royale in Miami.

“Typical, I thought. That phoney motherf***er had p***ed his pants and gone home to mama before I had a chance to blow this whole thing up myself.”

Mark claims in new book Sing Backwards And Weep that Liam tried to assert his authority over him within minutes of meeting on the tour.

He explains: “He came up to where we were sitting, ‘Howling Branches,’ he shouted.

“I realised he was addressing me and attempting a weak joke with the over-the-top intensity of a put-down.

“‘‘F*** off, you stupid f***ing idiot,’ was my brief, blasé retort.

Liam Gallagher appears at the Brit Awards in 1996

“What did you say?’ Gallagher yelled. ‘Are you mad?’

“He launched into a strange, lurching half-dance, lunging forward as though to physically attack, only to back up again while gesticulating crazily.

“He intended for it to look intimidating.

“‘He looked f***ing pathetic.” Oasis called it a day in 2009.

Liam’s brashness and ability to upset practically everyone he meets is one of the many reasons why Noel refuses to reunite the band .

And after this revelation, many bands might not quite fancy supporting Liam on tour either.

Kanye: you are so la rude.

IF there’s two things Kanye West is it’s sensitive and eccentric – but don’t even think about telling him.

La Roux found out the hard way when she called him “weird” following a studio session with him and was forced to apologise.

La Roux called Kanye West 'weird' and was forced to apologise

The Bulletproof singer – real name Elly Jackson – said: “He’s one of those people who’s not 100 per cent normal.

“You can’t talk about anything normal.

“You can’t just have a normal conversation.

“I didn’t manage to, anyway.

“I found it impossible.

“He’s on show 24 hours a day, it’s just him.

“It’s kind of amazing to be around.

“I’ll never be around anything like that again. It was really strange.

“He kind of wants it to be strange as well.

“He wants people to walk away saying, ‘That was really weird’.”

Kanye 'is one of those people who’s not 100 per cent normal', La Roux said

Elly told the Slacker podcast that a friend of the rap megastar, who is married to Kim Kardashian , told Kanye about her opinion of him – and he did not exactly react well.

He demanded Elly say sorry, so she wrote him an email to make amends.

She said: “It was quite creepy. I remember writing it.

“I was sat there on my sofa loling to myself like, ‘Dear Kanye . . . ’

“They told on me. It was ridiculous.

“I just wrote it all with a massive grin on my face – although they do actually have quite a lot of power.

“I was like, ‘I think I am going to genuinely apologise.

“It’s no skin off my nose to write this email’.”

Elly added: “I didn’t say anything bad about him.

“I just saw some behaviour – and it wasn’t directed at me – that I found upsetting and unsettling.”

The group are due to release their ninth album, A Celebration Of Endings, in August, so bandmates Ben and James Johnston may not be so keen to hear that.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
