When: Visit Meghalaya during the monsoons.

Why: If you are a nature lover, then there cannot be a better time to visit Meghalaya other than the monsoons. It is lush green and you can see more than fifty shades of green along with several new species of butterflies. Most importantly, you’ll get the most delicious momos, stir fried pork and beer at unbeatable prices.

Goa

When: The months from May to September are considered off-season.

Why: First and foremost, Goa will never give you a dull time. And you’ll spot great views with rice paddies and streams in the background. In the off-season, Goa has a number of festivals that you could enjoy. The Sao Jao festival in June and the Bonderam festival in August will give you an entirely different cultural experience. Go here for cheap booze and reasonable accommodation prices.

3. Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Do you like to travel during the leaner months when tourist crowds start thinning out? Accordingly, travelling to India during off-season brings a lot of benefits from great discounts to less crowds etc. So you should plan wisely.

Which months are off-season months in India?

The beginning of May until the end of September is considered off-season time for tourism in India. This period is divided into two seasons weather-wise i.e. May to June  (summer season) and  July to September  (monsoon season). This means if you are travelling to India during off-season you will experience either the hot summer/wet monsoon/both.

May and June are relatively busy months for tourism in the Himalayas as schools are out for summer trips within the country and lot of families plan trips to the cool hilltops to escape the heat.

At India Someday , we strongly recommend tours to North India during the monsoons as the rains are light and the region does not receive prolonged spells of showers. You end up enjoying pleasant weather, light rains and green countryside.

What is travelling during off-season like?

As India is vast, it differs from region to region; also depending on whether you plan to visit during the summer or the monsoon.

The benefits of travelling to India during off-season, other than in the Himalayas , you can expect to see many breathtaking sights and a lot less crowd while also enjoying the great discounts on accommodation all across India .

Summer off-season months

Expect really hot weather (afternoon temperatures of 40 degree Celsius and rising). You must prepare yourself for the heat, travel slow and pick accommodation with air-conditioning.

DO NOT WORRY, during these months we plan trips with A/C rooms and A/C modes of travel . It’s preferable to start exploring the city earlier in the day, come back for an afternoon nap or R&R at the hotel and then head back out after 16:00 hrs.

Monsoon off-season months

July onwards the heat gets more bearable, late 20 and 30 degree Celsius. Depending on which region you plan to visit you will encounter different amounts of rainfall. In general, the North (Delhi, Varanasi , Agra, Rajasthan and Gujarat) receive light showers never causing hindrance to travel.

Mumbai , Goa and Kerala on the other hand receive heavy tropical rainfall. Having said that, if you embrace the warm rain, the regions are green, teeming with water, and the locals are happy! It really is a special experience, but it will rain!

a few Tips/BENEFITS

  • May and June are the hot summer months. They’re better avoided unless you plan to spend time in the Himalayas. If your dates are not flexible and you don’t mind the heat, fear not for we will plan your trip with excellent air conditioned hotels and modes of travel. Like we said, off-season rates are great!
  • July to September are the monsoon months. They are still considered off-season months for travelling in India and you also enjoy fabulous discounts. Kerala (South India) receives a lot of rain during these months. However, we believe it is a great time to tour the North India .
  • Across India, you will enjoy fabulous hotel deals. Expect budget hotels to be 30% cheaper and upper end hotels to be up to 50% cheaper.  India has an amazing collection of palace and boutique hotels, that are affordable, and less crowded.

Off-Season Destinations in India to Score Ridiculous Discounts

Photo of Gunjan Upreti

The off-season is when smart travellers get going. Reason? Because you'll get the best deals such as slashed rates, personalised service from the hotel/resort staff, amazing weather and no crowd.

Here's a list of places in India which are cheaper and way better in the off - season. So, avoid the crowds and bag a bargain by travelling to the best bits of India when everyone else isn’t.

Off-Season In January

Photo of Leh by Gunjan Upreti

Leh is the perfect spot to start your year with. Winter is at its peak and there are no tourists around. That makes January the best time to visit the monasteries without the crowds, as they stay open all round the year. Leh’s most famous monasteries are Thiksey and Hemis. If you are lucky, you can also drive to Pangong-Tso and see the lake absolutely frozen. A minimum of two days are required to acclimatise, so plan your trip for around seven days. Expenditure on hotels will be minimal; you will only need to pay the full price for the taxi you take to go around. Leh is the perfect off season destination in India to visit!

The airport receives flights every alternate day in the week. The main highways are closed though. The only way to reach Leh in January is through air, at the Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport. It takes 1 hr 45 mins to reach Leh from Delhi.

Photo of Kalimpong, West Bengal, India by Gunjan Upreti

During the winters, tourist footfall is the least as compared to any other month in the year and this makes January the best time to visit Kalimpong. Monasteries in and around Kalimpong are open to visitors. The Zong Dhog Monastery is a must visit for Buddhist enthusiasts. The sky is clear and gives a good view of Kanchenjunga peak covered in snow at this particular time.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra near Siliguri and is connected to New Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata. Kalimpong is 79 km away from Siliguri; hire a taxi, which will take 2 hours (approx) to cover this distance.

Off-Season In February

Photo of Sangla, Himachal Pradesh, India by Gunjan Upreti

The snow-capped peaks go beyond your sight, and the cold crisp air meets your face. Sangla gets remote in the winters, with its route being the most dangerous to trod in January. Sangla in off season will completely change your perception about being a powerful human. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in India during winters. The Baspa River flows along Sangla valley's banks and creates a grey streak surrounded by white everywhere! The fort of Kamru is a great attraction and all monasteries allow visitors. Add it to your off season places to visit in India list.

You can reach Sangla through the Shimla route because the Manali-Rohtang Pass road will be closed at this time of the year. Buses and taxis are available from Shimla and Rampur. The nearest airport and railway station is in Shimla. It takes 7 hours to reach Manali from Shimla.

Rann of Kutch

Credits: Rahul Bota

Photo of Rann of Kutch, Kutch, Gujarat, India by Gunjan Upreti

February is the best time to visit Kutch because it is off season and pretty cold. But if you button up well, in the day time you can enjoy the salt spread marshy ground and explore the local areas. If you are a running enthusiast you can also participate in a trail marathon organised by The Outdoor Journal. You will also be just in time for the Rann Utsav, skipping the extra tourist lot that crowded there in the previous months.

To reach Kutch, the nearest airport is in Bhuj or you can take a train to Ahmedabad and hire a taxi from Ahmedabad to the Rann of Kutch (402 km).

Reckong Peo

Photo of Reckong Peo, Himachal Pradesh, India by Gunjan Upreti

A remote district in Himachal Pradesh that also works as a checkpoint for travelers going on the Manali-Leh route, Reckong Peo is one of the best places to visit during off-season. Reckong Peo is a must visit for all adventure junkies. You can visit and stay at the Key Gompa, and I am sure the sight will blow your mind away. The monastery will be wrapped in a blanket of snow right in the middle of descending slopes of the Pir Panjal range.

The only way to reach Reckong Peo at the peak of winters is via the road. You can hire a taxi or take the local buses that ply every day from Shimla, it takes 8 hours (243 km).

Off-Season In March

Photo of Old Manali, Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India by Gunjan Upreti

March is a time when most tourists avoid the snow and cold that Manali has to offer, and this makes this off-season the best time to go here. Old Manali celebrates Holi in a very traditional way in March and this stands as the focal point of a trip in this season. Completely off beat and rugged, you can enjoy chhang with the locals and play Holi with organic colours. The Hadimba Temple will also be open to visitors during this time. If you are adventurous, you can try your hand at skiing or trekking.

You can reach Old Manali by an overnight bus from Delhi. The nearest airport is Bhuntar (5 km away).

Photo of Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India by Gunjan Upreti

Palampur is famously known as the tea capital of north India and is located at a convenient distance of the Dhauladhar ranges in the Kangra valley. The best thing to do in Palampur during off season is to explore the tea gardens and indulge in paragliding. Palampur is considered as the best paragliding spot in India and we should completely make use of it! You can visit the Chamunda Devi Temple and the Bajinath temple. Palampur suits all those people looking for a pristine getaway, far off from the flocks of tourists.

The nearest airport is the Kangra Airport, 40 km away from Palampur. You can also reach this destination by rail and road; the nearest railway station is in Pathankot.

1. Rajasthan

Why Rajasthan: Because the 'Land of Kings' is full of stunning palaces and royal hilltop forts outlined against an incredible countryside.

Why During Off-season: When the rain comes down on the shining sandy desert, it’s not only the surface that turns green but also the joy on the face of the locals will fill you with awe. So, visit Rajasthan during July - September.

Why Kerala: Because Kerala boasts of being one of the 13 paradises on earth. An equable climate, beautiful and serene beaches, peaceful stretches of backwaters and canals, Kerala is certainly a wonderful place to visit.

Why During Off-season: Because of Onam festival. During Onam, you will be able to savour the rich cultural heritage of Kerala through dance, martial arts, traditional games and elaborate feasts. Also, fewer tourists and great discounts! visit Kerala during the Monsoons, i.e from June - September.

Why Coorg: When a place is referred to as the Scotland of India, it needs no further introduction.

Why During Off-season: Because the beauty of Coorg is certainly enhanced during June-August. One will find Coorg filled with the aroma of coffee blossoms and the coffee plantations are undoubtedly quite a fascinating sight.

Why Ooty? Because everyone deserves to witness a stunning vista with a soul-stirring experience.

Why During Off-season: To avoid the honeymoon couple who flood the place during peak season.

It gets quite cold in the winter months from December to February , but beautiful and worth going if you enjoy the clouds and the mist floating into your face.

5. Nainital

Why Nainital: A beautiful emerald lake surrounded by green hills, quaint old cottages and markets, and a web of walking tracks. Need more reasons?

Why During Off-season: Plan a trip between December-end and January because during this time Nainital is covered in a misty charm with the coldest days seeing the temperature dipping to zero degree Celsius.

Why Goa: Because whenever things are not working out for you and life seems to be on a downward spiral, a visit to Goa will give a new perspective to.

The months between May and September are considered off season. But this is when you can get great deals on hotels, especially the upper-end boutique hotels. With its rice paddies and streams, the countryside is mesmerizingly pretty and the few tourists add to its charm.

The benefit of traveling in the off season is that it'll work out cheaper – including large purchases such as plane tickets or activity packages. You're likely to find great deals on accommodations, too.

But before you start planning anything, double check the weather conditions, especially if you're considering exploring the hills during off season.

Whether you've seen enough of India's most popular destinations  or are simply keen to discover some less-touristy spots , there are some remarkable places to visit in India that are off the beaten track. Read on to find out lesser-known alternatives to well-trodden places.

Instead of Rajasthan: Kutch Region of Gujarat

Sharell Cook

The vast Kutch region of Gujarat is sometimes described as India's "Wild West." Much of Kutch consists of seasonal wetlands known as the Great Rann of Kutch (famous for its salt desert) and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ). The region's handicraft villages are also a highlight.

Plan your trip with this comprehensive Kutch travel guide .

Instead of Leh and Ladakh: Spiti in Himachal Pradesh

Spiti/Getty Images

When it comes to high altitude desert in India, you've most likely head of Leh and Ladakh. But what about lesser-known Spiti? Bordered by Ladakh in the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the southeast, and the Kullu Valley to the south, Spiti has an average height of around 12,500 feet above sea level. This stark alpine desert land is scattered with small villages and monasteries, and enclosed by soaring peaks crowned with snow.

Find out the details in this ultimate Spiti travel planner.

Instead of the Kerala Backwaters: Majuli in Assam

Amar Grover/Getty Images

Majuli, the world’s largest inhabited river island, sits amidst the imposing Brahmaputra River in Assam. A world within a world, ride bicycles through the fertile green landscape, go bird watching, and visit Hindu Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries.  La Maison de Anand is a quaint bamboo stilt house homestay there, designed by a French architect who fell in love with Majuli. The Majuli Ras Mahotsav festival, held in mid-November each year, celebrates the life of Lord Krishna with plays, folk dances, puppets, masks, songs and dance.

This Majuli Island travel guide has more information.

Instead of Darjeeling: Kalimpong in West Bengal

PRABHASROY/Getty Images

Kalimpong is the perfect solution for escaping the crowds at Darjeeling . This peaceful town is perched on a remote ridge in the Himalayan foothills, about two-and-a-half-hour hours away from Darjeeling, near the Sikkim border. It offers a diverse mix of attractions—Buddhist monasteries, historic churches, local markets, villages, nature trails, tea gardens, and a superb view of Mount Kangchenjunga (the third highest peak in the world).

Plan your trip with this complete guide to visiting Kalimpong.

Instead of Varanasi: Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh

Often referred to as the " Varanasi of Central India", the small holy town of Maheshwar is set along the banks of the Narmada River and is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. Stroll along the ghats (steps leading to the water), watch local life, and take a sunset boat ride along the river and out to Baneshwar temple. If you want to splurge you can be a guest of the royal Holkar family at their Ahilya Fort hotel , which they've established in part of their palace. Maheshwar is also renowned for its weaving industry.

Read more in this essential guide to Maheshwar

Instead of Hampi: Mandu in Madhya Pradesh

Mandu can be visited in conjunction with Maheshwar, as it's only a couple of hours away. This abandoned city from the Mughal era is commonly labeled the Hampi of Central India because of its treasure trove of ruins. They're spread over a 2,000 foot-high hilltop and enclosed by a 28-mile (45-kilometer) stretch of wall. In recognition of its importance, in 2018, the Indian government jointly named Mandu as Best Heritage City in India (along with Ahmedabad in Gujarat ) at the National Tourism Awards.

Read more in this essential guide to Mandu .

Instead of Fatehpur Sikri: Champaner-Pavagadh in Gujarat

These days, the abandoned 16th century Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri near Agra is overrun by touts. A lesser-known, short-lived, capital that's also a UNESCO World Heritage site is Champaner-Pavagadh , situated about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Ahmedabad. Notably, it's the only unaltered and complete Islamic pre-Mughal city in India. Its historical treasures, dating back to between the 8th and 14th centuries, include a hill fortress, palaces, places of worship (Jama Masjid is one of the most spectacular mosques in Gujarat), residential areas, reservoirs, and step wells.

Instead of Jaisalmer: Osian in Rajasthan

 iannomadav/Getty Images

Osian is perfect for those who want to avoid the commercial desert tourism in Jaisalmer and have a peaceful camel safari experience. This small town is situated about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur , on the way to Bikaner. Its surrounded by several sand dunes. Intricately carved stone temples, dating from the 8th to 11th centuries when Osian was an important trading center, are an added attraction. The main one is a Sun Temple dedicated to Surya the Sun god. Stay at Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp or Reggie's Camel Camp .

Instead of the Sundarbans: Pichavaram Mangroves in Tamil Nadu

You can be forgiven if you didn't know about Pichavaram mangrove forest, despite it being one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal is the largest). After all, it's not on the tourist trail. However, this remarkable and fascinating place is definitely worth visiting. Spread over nearly 3,000 acres, it has 4,400 big and small canals that can be explored by boat. In addition, Chidambaram Nataraj Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva in his dancing form) is not far away.

This guide to visiting Pichavaram mangrove forest will help you plan your trip.

Instead of Varkala Beach: Kannur in Kerala

The small town of Kannur, in northern Kerala, is known for its secluded beaches, mysterious masked spirit-possession theyyam rituals , and hand loom weaving. The theyyam season runs from October until May and Kerala Tourism has a comprehensive calendar of theyyam events . There are some delightful, laid back (and inexpensive) beach houses in the Thottada beach area, such as Kannur Beach House , Waves Beach Resort, Chera Rock Beach House , and KK Heritage Homestay . Kannur district is also home to Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach. You can drive all the way along its vast stretch of sand.

Instead of Kanha National Park: Kawardha in Chhattisgarh

Courtesy of Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat

Thinking of visiting famous Kanha National Park but want to avoid the crowds and prefer nature over tiger spotting? Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat is a few hours drive away and has three atmospheric cottages nestled in the Maikal Hills, close to the ancient Bhoramdeo temple complex. The owner is a native of the area and has an excellent rapport with the indigenous villagers, who belong to the Baiga and Gond tribes. Guests can visit their tolas (villages) and colorful weekly haats (tribal markets). Treks into the jungle are offered, and the butterflies, birds and wildlife are exceptional. It's also possible to go on longer treks into the Maikal Hills, staying in villagers' homes.

Instead of Manali: Kalap in Uttarakhand

Anand Sankar

Manali in Himachal Pradesh attracts plenty of adventure seekers, who come to enjoy its surrounding village trekking trails. However, to go where very few tourists have gone before, head to Kalap, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of northern Uttarakhand. This tiny village is not accessible by road or rail (you'll need to trek, and porters and mules are provided). A responsible tourism project was started there in 2013 to help the villagers generate an income. You can stay with them and experience their way of life, as well as spend time in the pristine surroundings.

Instead of Nagarhole in Karnataka: Pollachi in Tamil Nadu

Vinod Kumar M/Getty Images

Nagarhole National Park is one of the top national parks in India . It gets its name from the snake-like river that winds its way through it. However, the government-run minibus safaris through the park tend to be rather disappointing and noisy and private safaris are costly. Alternatively, Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu is an unexplored place teaming with wildlife, plus Anamalai Tiger Reserve is in the area. The annual Kongu Nadu Cattle Festival, held in January, is also a highlight. Thadam Experiences offers customized trips including bird watching, nature walks, boat rides, village and farm visits, and tea tours. Grass Hills Tours and Travels is also a reputable company that specializes in local nature and wildlife tourism. Stay at Coco Lagoon Resort , or the cheaper Coconut County Farm Stay.

Instead of Hyderabad and Golconda: Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh

Aleksey Gavrikov/Getty Images

Golconda Fort near Hyderabad is one of the top forts in India . However, about seven hours south of the city are the ruins of another fort that hardly anyone is familiar with, despite the fact that it was possessed by many powerful rulers including the Chalukyas, Pemmasani Nayaks, Golconda Sultanate, Mughals (under Aurangzeb), and the British. Gandikota is a fort on a gorge in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The gorge is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India. It's possible to kayak along the Penna River, hike along the gorge, and enjoy spectacular star-lit nights and sunrises over the canyon. Accommodations are limited in the area. If you don't want to stay at the Haritha hotel run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism or camp by the canyon, Royal County is the best option although it's an hour from Gandikota.

Instead of Goa: Maharashtra's Konkan Coast

North of Goa, across the border in Maharashtra, the Konkan Coast offers a bounty of beautiful beaches that are among the most pristine in the country. Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much development and many are practically deserted. Inexpensive beachfront homestays are popping up in many places, and you'll get mouthwatering home-cooked coastal cuisine. If you'd prefer somewhere with more facilities yet still noncommercial, Gokarna in Karnataka is ideal.

Best off season destinations in india, category : guides.

Travelling during the off season brings with it a plethora of benefits like lesser crowds, dirt cheap accommodation and fewer pesky hawkers to fend off.  Here are the top places in India that are best visited during the off-season.

Teesta River, Sikkim

The 309 km long river (also known as Tista) originates at an altitude of 5,330 meters from Tso Lhamo lake in the Himalayas. The river is massive and schizophrenically shifts between placid and tranquil to extremely ferocious phases during the course of its journey. This renders it an ideal location for river rafting and other adventure activities. The confluence of the Teesta River and River Rangit is a popular sightseeing spot thanks to the brilliant hues created when the muddy emerald green waters of Teesta mixes with crystal clear deep green waters of Rangit.

Shoja, Himachal Pradesh

Most visitors to Shoja usually hear about the place through word of mouth. They call this tiny village the perfect date spot and it does total justice to the tag with its stunning views and quaint charm. Often overshadowed by the more popular Kasol, Shoja holds its own with beautiful valleys, snow-covered trees and cozy wooden guesthouses. There are quite a few trekking options in the area; apart from which the main attraction is a small waterfall which makes for an ideal picnic spot. There are only a handful of guesthouses in Shoja so try to time your visit during the off-season (November to February).

Dawki, Shillong

Dawki ain’t a popular tourist destination in the first place but it gets even more deserted during the off-season. This stunning village near the India-Bangaldesh border is a haven for adrenaline junkies and nature lovers. Go boating on the glass-like, green-hued waters and end your day with a trek amongst the dense woods that surrounds the river.

Hemis National Park, Jammu and Kashmir

Named after the famed monastery Hemis Gompa, this high altitude national park is located 40 km southeast of Leh. Located on the banks of the Indus River, it is considered to be the best place in the world to see the majestic Snow Leopard. The park is  also home to several endangered mammals like Asiatic ibex, Tibetan wolf, the Eurasian Brown Bear and the Red Fox. It is a fairly challenging trek – especially during the winters – but the stunning landscape more than makes up for the effort.

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

Mandu or Mandavgad is a ruined city located around 95 km from Indore. Its history dates back to 6th century BC when it was a vital military post due to its strategic position and natural defences. The city is dotted with spell-binding Afghan architecture in the form of palaces, temples and mosques, including the beautiful 14th century mosque – Jama Masjid. October to April is the peak season, so try to plan your visit away from this period so you can explore the beautiful ruins at your own leisurely pace.

Daringbadi, Odisha

Daringbadi is sort of an anomaly in a place like Odhisa which experiences searingly hot temperatures and soaking humidity almost throughout the year. This quaint hill station, located around 246 kilometers from Bhubaneswar is the only place in south India that experiences snowfall in the winters. The place gets swamped with tourists during the peak season so head there during the winters to explore the coffee plantations, dense pine jungles and beautiful valleys without a soul in sight.

Ponmudi Hills, Kerala

This quaint hill resort with narrow winding pathways and picturesque landscape is a popular weekend getaway close to Trivandrum. But the surge in its popularity has resulted in an almost an exponential increase in litter and pollution in the area. However, off season visitors will be rewarded with an untainted version of the exotic flowers, multi-hued butterflies and small rivulets.

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

A splendid hill station located 115 km from Vizag that’s  famed for its pleasant weather and breathtaking views. It can get a bit crowded during the peak season but during the off- season you can have this lush green paradise all for yourself.

12 Best places to visit in monsoon in India

Western Ghats, Maharashtra, India during the monsoon

Top 12 monsoon destinations in India

THE INDIAN MONSOON is a very special time of year. After the broiling heat of spring and early summer, everyone welcomes the arrival of the southwest monsoon in India. The rain brings down the temperatures … and cools off temperaments, too. Monsoon means time to relax, enjoy snacks like chai and pakora, and celebrate the lushness of the season. Some destinations in India are seemingly made for the monsoon season.

I asked local experts for their favourite places to visit during the monsoon in India. Read on for insider tips on some of the best places to go during the monsoon — which typically starts in Kerala on June 1 and travels up the coast and across India until September. Do not hesitate to travel to India during monsoon, if you know where to go, you too can enjoy the rainy season in India. Here are the top 12 monsoon destinations in India.

cloud over Rishikesh, a monsoon destination in India

Rishikesh and the mountains of Uttarakhand by Mariellen

It’s the mist that hangs on the mountains, a scarf of white clouds draped across emerald green forests, that gets me every time. Rishikesh and the mountains of Uttarakhand are beautiful in the monsoon. The sky is thick like an oil painting, the flora bursts with fecundity, and the rivers swell and run with ferocious energy.

I’ve spent two monsoon seasons in Rishikesh , thanks to the pandemic. Though the humidity can sometimes be overwhelming, I’ve learned to love the slower pace of life and the lush colours. Every stone wall has a patina of green moss, everywhere flowers bloom and butterflies flutter. The rain pours down at least once almost every day, the Ganga River rises and roars, and there’s sometimes not much else to do except sip chai and watch the season unfold. Stroll among the jungle-like grounds of The Beatles Ashram or hike up to a nearby waterfall. Sip chai in The Beatles Cafe in Tapovan, with an astounding view of the river, and later enjoy one of the many evening aartis (song-filled rituals that take place along the river banks at dusk to honour the mother river of India).

If you have more time, take some Yoga classes — or better yet, spend time in a Yoga ashram . India is the birthplace of Yoga, and Rishikesh is the capital. You can read my recommendations about Yoga in India and in Rishikesh here . My favourite ashram is Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram in Tapovan.

Throughout Garhwal and Kumaon , there are many hill stations that can make for a relaxing break. My favourites are Landour (near Mussoorie) and Mukteshwar (near Nainital). Corbett Tiger Reserve is open all year ’round now, and there are several sustainable lodges with great in-house naturalists such as Vanghat Lodge, Jim’s Jungle Lodge, and The Ranger’s Lodge.

off season tourist places in india

Jaipur, Rajasthan by Charu Goyal

The pink city of Jaipur has its own charisma come monsoon. With the Aravalli mountains covered in the most beautiful hue of green and the already splendid forts and palaces freshly washed down with raindrops, visiting Jaipur during the monsoon season is like seeing a newly painted canvas.

Begin your trip with driving to the iconic Amer Fort , where you will pass by Jal Mahal, the palace rising from the shimmering lake, the sky overhead dotted with graceful herons. Make your way to Maota Lake and admire the verdant landscape that looks even more delightful during the rainy season.

There is an off-the-radar viewpoint situated right across the main parking lot, offering a bird’s eye perspective of both Amer town and the city of Jaipur. While there, savour the green mountainous views — uncommon in the desert state of Rajasthan.

Join us in India for Diwali!

Come to India with us and experience the Festival of Lights! The India for Beginners Diwali and Fabulous Rajasthan small group tour, from Breathedreamgo, new date coming soon. Tour includes sunrise visit to the the Taj Mahal, two tiger safaris, and celebrating Diwali in Jaipur. BOOK NOW!

The nearby Panna Meena Ka Kund is also a great spot to visit in monsoon as the baori fills up with rainwater, making it more soothing and more photogenic. Continue onto Jaigarh Fort and Nahargarh Fort that together with Amer Fort make the trinity that used to protect the old city. The Padao restaurant at Nahargarh Fort is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset over Jaipur.

The local beloved Tapri tea house (central location) is also a must-visit during the monsoon season. Make sure to get a table overlooking the lush central park and try a piping hot cup of masala chai. Steaming hot kachoris are also a must when it starts to pour — head to Rawat Mishthan Bhandar or Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar.

Delhi in Indian monsoon

Delhi in monsoon by Sundeep and Bedabrata

Have you ever seen the dance of the peacock? They say that in India, peacocks dance during monsoons. While that may be a romanticized notion, India, a predominantly agrarian economy, looks forward to the rainy season.

No matter which part of India you visit, the monsoon has its own flavour. Delhi monsoon arrives a little late compared to southern and eastern India. But when she does, it is worth the wait. The first showers in Delhi are reserved for getting wet. After the prolonged harsh summer, every soul in the city is parched. Be it fancy terraces, humble rooftops or the streets, almost everybody runs out and drenches themselves to their heart’s content.

The cascade of sneezes that follow is moderated with hot cups of strong milky ginger tea with sides of savoury pakora or samosa. In fact, Delhi households have a set of sweets and savouries that are reserved for the monsoon. Malpua, gulgule, and our favourite ghewar — try these sinful sweets from any sweetshop in the city. The famous foods of Delhi are delicious.

Delhi is one of the greenest capitals of the world. Be it the Delhi Ridge, the Lodhi Garden or the flora at Garden of Five Senses, the trees and bushes sparkle with freshness. If you are near any of these areas, do visit these oases. The neighbourhood parks can be a good substitute as well. The smell of the moist earth — called the petrichor — is intoxicating anywhere in Delhi.

Also, Delhi is a city of mausoleums and some of these look particularly gorgeous after a fresh shower. We recommend tours to Hauz Khas, Humayun’s Tomb, Mehrauli area, or the Qutub Minar. The rain works magic on the stone structures and transforms these into beautiful shades of red. The view is totally worth notwithstanding the traffic jams that you might face, perhaps the only bane of monsoon in Delhi.

Chai pakora, snack in Delhi in monsoon

Goa in monsoon by Shivya Nath

For a long time, I ran away from the monsoon in India. I had no idea how beautiful the rainy season could be, how rejuvenating monsoon travel could be. After years of fleeing the monsoon in India, I now chase it with all my heart.

Ever since I gave up my home to embrace a life of travel , Goa has become my digital nomad refuge in the monsoon.

That liberating feeling of driving a scooter along the endless rice paddies and palm-fringed interiors. Working out of quaint cafes with decent Wifi. Indulging my taste buds in authentic Goan curries and at organic cafes. Calling charming old Portuguese houses (and other offbeat stays in Goa) ‘home’ for a few weeks.

This offbeat Goa , a Goa that few end up discovering, is everything I need to recharge my batteries, catch up on work and retreat into susagade (contentment) mode.

I lie on my back, floating alone in the pool, soft raindrops gently falling on my face. Palm trees rustle in the breeze. A peacock cries in the distance. Grey clouds move swiftly through the sky. I close my eyes and deeply inhale the heavy monsoon air, thinking that maybe, the clouds are erupting just to indulge me.

I’ve come to believe that nowhere else in the world does the rainy season like India. Not Cuba, not Guatemala, not Southeast Asia. The rains in India are laden with an indescribable feeling of joy . The earth bursts into shades of green, the aroma of pakoras waft out of every house, the immense relief from the hot summer is visible on every face.

I love getting drenched in the lashing rain of the monsoon in India, inhaling the moisture-heavy breeze and filling my lungs with the smell of wet earth. For this is the feeling I came back eagerly to chase. This is my season. The season I’d be if I were a season.

My suggestions for Goa in monsoon:

Slow down, stay a while and discover offbeat Goa through responsible travel and sustainable living experiences. In monsoon, you can get away from the grey beaches and boisterous crowds and experience places where peacocks dance in open meadows in the rains and locals gather at neighborhood churches to pray and socialize. Where long-term dwellers embrace an organic way of life, and creative types find abundant inspiration.

Having spent nearly 10 monsoons in Goa, I’ve discovered secret waterfalls , swimming holes, cycling trails and kayaking routes that will introduce you to the Goa far beyond the beaches (though Goa does have some of the best beaches in India ). A Goa where the susegad life still trumps all!

Shivya is the author of a bestselling travel memoir and runs one of India’s most popular travel blogs – The Shooting Star . During the pandemic, she co-founded Voices of Rural India , which aims to upskill and enable rural communities to build alternate livelihoods through digital journalism. She also runs Journeys , a subscription-based travel newsletter at the intersection of meaningful travel, sustainable living and self-discovery.

Dal Lake Kashmir India in monsoon

Kashmir in monsoon

Since the time of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Kashmir has been called “heaven on earth.”  This quote below is attributed to Jahangir about Kashmir.

If there is a heaven on earth, it is here … it is here … it is here …”

The Kashmir valley is a beautiful landscape at any time of year, and Srinagar especially is famed for the beauty of Dal Lake. But the monsoon season is in fact one of the best times to visit Kashmir valley as temperatures rarely rise above 30 C. And, though the monsoon season in the Kashmir valley starts in July and ends in August, there is very little rainfall. The mountains and lakes moderate the climate and temperature, and the long summer days gives visitors lots of time to enjoy the region. Every month between March to October is a good time to visit the Kashmir valley, but August would be a good choice as it is apple picking season with bounteous fresh fruit available.

The beauty of the Kashmir valley is mesmerizing and will transport you to another realm. In Srinagar, don’t miss the resplendent Mughal Gardens or watching the charming shikaras skim the surface of beautiful Dal Lake, against the backdrop of a stunning mountains. Like tourists from the golden age of travel, you can stay in a houseboat and wake to the sounds of a floating market place. Along with Srinagar, other tourist friendly destinations include Pahalgam, Sonmarg, and Yusmarg. There is no doubt that Kashmir is one of the best tourist places to visit in India during the monsoon. If you want to visit, check out these Kashmir tourism packages, they can make trip planning a lot easier.

Western ghats in monsoon, India

Western Ghats in Maharashtra by Arti Shah

It wouldn’t be trite to say that Maharashtra transforms into a temple for nature pilgrims during monsoon. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs along the entire Sahyadri mountain range in the northern part of Maharashtra. They welcome travelers away from the crowded urban milieu, offering visitors a deeper sense of wonder during the season then they can find in a city’s purest charms.

Here, visitors find unspoilt lakes, dramatic waterfalls, rustic countryside, smoky blue hillsides enmeshed by well-marked webs of rocky trails and hiking paths that lead to some very popular places of attraction. Here, monsoons clothe the entire landscape of the Western Ghats in a relentless tangle of greenery. The fresh greenery, mist covered foliage, rustling of leaves, and cascading rains seep into your wearied mind, body, and soul replacing old outdated thoughts with brand new perspectives.

And when you witness and fall in love with this whole sensual feast, you encounter the history, monuments, and ambiance that is bound to leave you mesmerized.

There is no dearth of places to visit in Western Ghats of Maharashtra during the monsoon season. Weekend road trips to popular hill stations like Matheran, Mahabaleshwar, Igatpuri, Lonavala and Khandala are in huge demand alongside treks to several known and lesser known forts, temples and mountain peaks like Torna, Harishchandra, Kalsubai, Tungareshwar Temple , Lohagad, Rajmachi, Bhimashankar, Devkund Falls and many many more.

The monsoon love affair is incomplete without a mention of the foodstalls and eateries, which are usually run by the locals and do a brisk business. Sipping cups of piping hot masala chai along with a plate full of pakodas or spicy hot vada pav is the perfect way to double the joys of the season during the journey.

Arti is a wanderer at heart and a wonderer in spirit; discovering, creating and simply being present for the gift called life. Her blog, My Yatra Diary , focuses on her spiritual journeys, and is all about her love of exploring and learning.

Dzukou Valley, Nagaland, India in monsoon

Dzukou Valley, Nagaland by Joydeep Phukan

The northeast Indian state of Nagaland is not only home to 16 major ethnic groups, but is also blessed with abundant hills and mountains. Dzukou Valley in Nagaland, at an altitude of 2438 metres above sea level, is a hiker’s paradise. Starting the hike from either the Jakhama or Viswema trail, the five-six hours’ climb through the evergreen tropical forests, streams, and gorges lead to a campsite maintained by Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO). It is surrounded by mountains and a majestic view of the valley.

The monsoon (May to August) revitalizes the valley with vivid flowers, the rare Dzukou Lily, and bamboo shrubs that dance along with the wavy wind against the background of clear blue skies. I still cherish that empyreal night at Dzukou when the clouds flowed like a river into the valley forming white layers over the hillocks, and then rose up caressing us under the starry moonlit sky.

Things to do and food: One may hike down the valley, dive into the cold river stream, and watch the panoramic view of Dzukou. Hiring a local guide to explore the lesser-known waterfalls and caves is worth it. The campsite offers makeshift kitchens for self-cooking, and Naga cuisine is available as well.

How to reach? Dimapur in Nagaland is the nearest railway station for Dzukou Valley. While the nearest international airport is in Guwahati, Assam. Rental cars and public buses are also available from Dimapur to Kohima till the beginning of trails.

Joydeep Phukan is a travel blogger based in Assam, India. He publishes The Gypsy Chiring, a fusion of stories on travel, adventure, hiking, trekking, mountaineering, cultures and nature, thoughts, poetry, and life as a whole.

Root Bridge in Nongriat, India in monsoon

Meghalaya by Amrita

There are some places in India that are absolutely gorgeous during the monsoon season. The rains seem to just add more charm. Meghalaya in northeast India is one such place — breathtaking in the rains. In fact, Meghalaya literally means the “abode of clouds” and the state is also the home to the wettest place on earth, Mawsynram.

There are a number of places to visit in Meghalaya, but the best place to explore during the monsoon is  Cherrapunjee or Sohra . The place is pristine and you can see almost nothing but green everywhere. The weather is quite unpredictable, as expected in monsoon. Clouds literally play hide and seek with you. The best thing about Meghalaya in monsoon are the waterfalls — they come alive with the rains. You can visit the Seven Sisters Falls, Nongriat Falls, Wei Sawdong Falls, and Dainthlen Falls. If you love hiking and wilderness, then you can go for Nongriat Trek.

Apart from Cherrapunjee, the monsoon is also beautiful at Shillong and Mawsynram. After all, Mawsynram receives the most rain in the entire world!

Khasi cuisine is quite delectable, especially pork preparations and Jadoh — a laboriously-made dish of rice and meat. So if you are a foodie, do not miss the Jadoh at Trattoria near Police Bazaar in Shillong.

Do carry your rain wear and proper shoes while you visit Meghalaya during the monsoon. The roads connecting the main towns in Meghalaya are quite good and you can travel easily in the rains. Meghalaya definitely is one of the most beautiful places to visit in India during the monsoon.

Hampi by Ellis Veen

The monsoon brings much awaited refreshment in Hampi after the scorching summer heat of April and May. This area was once the capital of the Vijayanagara empire ( 1336–1646) . There are so many ruins of temples, palaces, and other structures that it would take weeks to see everything — especially as Hampi has a relaxed atmosphere that will invite you to slow down.

Everywhere you go and everywhere you walk are remnants of Hampi’s glory days. Hampi is best explored on foot and with not much shade you will appreciate the cloudy monsoon days. Hampi actually sees less rainfall than other places in India — if you are apprehensive about the monsoon rains.

There is just enough rain in Hampi to change the rocky landscape into lush greenery. The perfect climate to wander around the 7th century Virupaksha temple or the ancient Vittala temple with its famous stone chariot. Other highlights include the lotus palace, the elephant stables, the queen’s baths, stepped wells, and large statues of Ganesh and Laxmi Narashima.

After days of busy sightseeing, you can relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset over the Tungabhadra River. For the most scenic hotels you will have to cross the river to the village of Virupapur Gadi. Here you will find paddy fields that are a bright green during the monsoon.

Hampi is in the north of Karnataka and easy to reach by train from Bangalore. From Goa there are convenient trains (to nearby Hospet) and night buses.

Manipur, India in monsoon

Manipur by Marco Ferrarese

Lush and semi-tropical Manipur, the easternmost state of India, is one of the best places to visit in Northeast India . It borders Myanmar and resembles Southeast Asia in spirit and climate more than other parts of India. Manipur is a different, offbeat place to visit during the monsoon season, which kicks in a bit later than in the rest of India here — roughly at the end of June, which is still a summer month. But as soon as the rain starts, the verdant hills that hem this state shimmer in their truest colours.

It’s easy to start in the state capital Imphal, which is well connected to the rest of India by air, and via road to Kohima in nearby Nagaland. If you come this way, your passport will be stamped at a checkpoint on Manipur’s border.

Start your Imphal visit with a tour of the extensive grounds of what once was the fortress of Kangla, and take your time to browse the Khwairamband bazaar at the heart of town. Also known as Ima Keithel (the mother’s market), it’s four buildings and sidewalks full of thousands of Meithei women, who peddle their stuff rain or shine in the biggest market exclusively run by women in Asia.

But the highlight of a monsoon visit to Manipur is Loktak Lake. Only about an hour’s drive south of Imphal, this lake is a part of the Keibul Lamjao National Park, and the region is home to the endemic Sangai deer.

This large body of water surrounded by green hills is most famous for its phumdis, which are circular floating enclosures made with matted vegetation by the local fishermen and used as natural fish traps. It’s possible to stay overnight in traditional accommodations set on the phumdis themselves and learn about life in this most special ecosystem of land and water on the border of India and Myanmar.

Munnar in Indian monsoon

Munnar, Kerala by Sinjana Ghosh

Munnar in monsoon is not just a treat for the eyes, but a therapeutic experience for the body and mind that you will cherish forever. The winding roads with opulent tea estates on one side and the lofty mountains on the other are breathtaking. The monsoon casts its magical spell and adorns Munnar with a dreamlike mist — lovely waterfalls cutting through the greenery add to the charm.

The major tourist spots in Munnar are Lockheart viewpoint and tea factory, Eravikulum National Park, Carmelagiri Elephant Park, and Matupetty Dam. Of these, Eravikulum National Park is my favourite, definitely on a must-visit list. This is the only place in the world where you can spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahrs with ease. Like many other tourist spots, however,  it is crowded almost all year ’round.

But no worries, the beauty of Munnar is best experienced on the outskirts. Take a boating trip in Anayirangal Park to see wild elephants come to the lake to quench their thirst. Ditch the tourist zones and explore the Tata Tea estate of Chinnakanal for free (with hardly any tourists around). Visit a tea factory to learn about the process of tea production. A jeep-ride into Kolukkumalai, the highest tea garden in the world, must also be on your itinerary for a trip to Munnar (although it’s technically located in Tamil Nadu).

Monsoon in Kasauli by Neha

Monsoon in India is a beautiful time and especially in the mountains. With greenery all around and a blanket of clouds, it makes for a spectacular sight. A favourite monsoon destination is the hill station of Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, north India. Kasauli is a small cantonment town established in 1842 by the British. It is a two-hour drive from Chandigarh, which makes it a great weekend getaway from Delhi and many other cities in Punjab and Haryana. It is also enroute to Shimla.

The best way to experience the beauty of Kausali is to walk along the Mall Road with scintillating views of the valley. There are many tea stalls on the Mall Road, all thronged by tourists savouring hot cups of chai and scrumptious pakoras (vegetable fritters) while the rain pours down.  Take a walk from the Mall Road to Sunset Point for amazing views. It will feel as if the clouds are welcoming you, and keeping you company. (But mind the restricted army areas.)

Another must visit is Monkey Point, the highest point in Kasauli, with beautiful views of Satluj river and Himalayan mountains. There is a Hanuman temple at Monkey Point that is believed to have mythological significance. Note: There are many monkeys in the area, so avoid eating anything while walking or feeding them to avoid snatching.

The weather remains pleasant during the monsoons with cool nights and is a great time to visit. Baikunth Resorts and Ramada Kasauli are great places to stay.

While going for a holiday during the rains comes with its own hassles, we present a list of must places to visit in monsoon in India  that will even make a heavy downpour a memorable one.

Here is a list of places to visit in Monsoon in India:

1. Cherrapunji

Hailed as one of the wettest place on the planet, Cherrapunji has wondrous delights in store for the adventurous traveler. The average rainfall this region receives is a stunning 463.7 inches and temperatures do not generally cross the mid 20’s throughout the year. Hiking is the best way to explore the rich and verdant surroundings, and Cherrapunji has plenty of that to offer. Walk on the double decker living root bridge , a technique perfected over hundreds of years whereby living roots of trees have been converted into bridges, or witness the stunning Nohkalikai falls . It is the tallest plunge waterfall in India and is said to be particularly remarkable to witness during the monsoons.

2. Kodaikanal

Commonly referred to as the “Princess of Hill Stations” , Kodaikanal has always been a thriving tourist destination. Due to its altitude, the city remains cool throughout the year and the monsoon season is very rainy and misty. Pillar Rocks is a popular tourist attraction. The chilly weather and the floating clouds make it a picturesque sight indeed and is a must visit. Put your hiking boots on and trek up to Dolphin’s Nose which offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding plains away from the swarming crowds.

Located in the lush, forested area of Assam, Diphu will appeal to any traveller seeking peace and solace away from concrete jungles. Take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens , host to a myriad variety of plants and trees. Calm your senses and take in the sights and sounds of chirping birds and blossoming flowers in a rainbow of colors. If you’re in the mood to see something different, visit the Taralangso Cultural Centre and watch locals engage in various performing arts that reflect the culture of the land.

4. Araku Valle y

Away from all the commercial tourist holiday destinations, Araku Valley has much to offer, and is most popular with travellers who prefer something a little offbeat. You can choose from a variety of things to see such as the Borra caves famous for its stalagmites and stalactites. Around 4 km away from the caves are the Katiki waterfalls known for their natural beauty. Choose a picnic spot and witness nature at its best during the monsoons.

Towering mountains, brilliant blue skies and arid desert as far as the eye can see, Ladakh is as magnificent in its entirety. Being in a rain shadow region, Ladakh receives most of its water from snow fall and is hence relatively dry in the rainy season. Pangong lake and Nubra valley are some of its most striking sights and if you’re the adventurous type, rent a bike and ride on the treacherous though scenic roads throughout the region.

God’s Own Country is nothing short of breathtaking even during a deluge. With about 120-140 rainy days a year , the rain Gods make sure that the monsoons in Kerala  are a truly spectacular sight. Take in the beauty around you with a drive along the verdant countryside or for a special experience, lie back in a traditional house boat while taking a ride on the infamous back waters. Treat yourself to some of the many Ayurvedic spas to de-stress and revel in the knowledge that this is truly paradise on earth. Alleppey , Munnar , Kovalam and Thekkedy are the top places to visit in monsoon in Kerala.

Lush greenery, gently sloping hills and an almost ideal climate, Coorg is an excellent getaway for the all- weather traveller in you. Often hailed as one of the rainiest places in India, Coorg holds wondrous delights during the monsoons. Gushing waterfalls and overflowing rivers are common; however, beware of slippery paths and rocky areas when exploring the beautiful landscape. Rainfall is at its highest and most intense during June to August , and the weather is just perfect to curl up with a book and piping hot tea. For the more adventurous, nothing beats getting drenched in the rain at least once. Famous for being a honeymoon destination, Coorg is also popular among newlyweds and a light stroll on a rain-soaked path is highly recommended for young lovers.

Popular all year round, Goa is particularly captivating during the Monsoons. Being off season, few tourists really enjoy the wonders that offbeat places in Goa have to offer during the rainy season apart from the numerous beaches. While most beaches are off limits due to high tide and rough seas, take a walk off the beaten path instead and visit some of its old churches in South Goa, or if you’re in a really adventurous mood, go crab hunting and fishing alongside the locals. Witness the transformation of your surroundings as the fauna turns into a brilliant green as far as the eye can see, and let its calming effect overtake your senses. Revel in the peace and tranquility that Goa has to offer for a few months in the year.

9. The Valley of Flowers :

Located in the state of Uttarakhand , this National Park is home to an abundant variety of alpine fauna and flora. While precipitation levels are generally low in the region, the period from late June to Early September is undoubtedly the best time to visit this idyllic region. You will be greeted with the awe-inspiring sight of thousands of flowers in full bloom that will most likely rival anything you’ve seen before. A challenging 15 km hike is one of the few ways to get there, so you might want to bring appropriate gear. Keep your eyes peeled; if you’re lucky enough, you may even see the reticent snow leopard and Asiatic black bear, among others. The dense fog and rain only add to the stunning beauty of this terrain, making it one of the most picturesque places to visit  in monsoon in India on this list.

These 7 Offbeat Places In India Are Perfect For Your Next Family Vacation

It’s with our families that much of our holidaying is done. Nothing matches the joy of taking off to someplace nice with our families. Given the times we live in, families are in a constant search of offbeat places. We’ve put together a list of family-friendly holiday destinations that will offer a safe experience for you and your loved ones. Time to get your family together and pack your bags. By Karan Kaushik

Here are 7 lesser-explored destinations in India for your next family holiday

Netarhat, jharkhand.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ranchi Blog (@ranchiblog)

Nicknamed as the Queen of Chotanagpur, Netarhat is a charming little British-era hill station that could turn anyone into a poet. Netarhat looks nothing like your stereotypical hill station but is still every bit idyllic and rejuvenating. Blessed with dense forests, Netarhat is also steeped in history . Some even say that the British had named it “nature’s heart” and that its present name is just a corruption of that.

The hilly hamlet is famous for its stunning sunrises and sunsets. Visit the nearby tribal hamlets and meet the Birjia and Birhor tribes. Head to Magnolia Point to savour the best sunsets. The point is named after a British girl, who fell in love with a young shepherd. Their beautiful statues adorn the place. Other major attractions in Netarhat include Netarhat Dam, Koel Viewpoint, Upper Ghagri Falls, and Lower Ghagri Falls.

Wilson Hills, Gujarat

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by @adisnapss

Located in Valsad’s Dharampur tehsil near Surat, Wilson Hills is an enchanting hill station. Picture winding roads, verdant hills, shimmery white waterfalls, and foggy environs. That’s Wilson Hills for you. A paradise for trekkers and nature lovers, the hill station is named after British officer Lord Wilson, the then governor of Mumbai. Often referred to as mini Saputara, Wilson Hills enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. Monsoons are typically beautiful.

When here, you can explore the Pangarbari Wildlife Sanctuary. The Barumal Temple, nestled amidst the lush hills, is another prime attraction. Take your kids to the District Science Centre in Dharampur for an educative experience. Then there’s the Lady Wilson Museum, which offers a peek into the history of the hill station. It also showcases the rich tribal heritage of Gujarat. If you love waterfalls, visit the Jodia and the Bilpudi Twin Waterfalls. The Marble Umbrella, built in the memory of Lord Wilson offers spectacular views of the hill station.

Shekhawati, Rajasthan

7 offbeat family holidays

If you have had enough forts and palaces, give the gorgeous havelis of Shekhawati a chance for a great offbeat family holiday. Known for its age-old havelis and rich painterly tradition, Shekhawati comprises the small towns of Fatehpur, Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Dundlod, Alsisar among others. Constructed between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, the havelis of Shekhawati stand as architectural marvels and remind visitors of the opulent lives lived by the Marwari businessmen who built them.

Thanks to its incredible frescoes, Shekhawati is fondly known as an “open-air art gallery” today. From grand mansions to ancient step wells to beautiful cenotaphs, you’ll have much to appreciate here. Visit the Podar Haveli Museum in Nawalgarh, marvel at the tasteful murals at the Mahaveer Prasad Goenka Haveli in Fatehpur, and luxuriate at Castle Mandawa . Other must-visit attractions are Alsisar Fort, Rani Sati Temple in Jhunjhunu, and Dundlod Fort.

Unakoti, Tripura

offbeat family holidays

One of Northeast India’s best-kept secrets, Unakoti will leave you surprised with its ancient bas relief sculptures. Renowned for its mammoth stone and rock-cut sculptures, Unakoti has its share of myths and legends. Legend has it that Lord Shiva had spent a night here on his way to Varanasi . According to a popular story, it is believed that Lord Shiva turned 99,99,999 deities into stone after they couldn’t wake up on time to leave for Varanasi.

Some locals also believe that the sculptures were made by an artist called Kallu Kumhar. Particularly noteworthy among all sculptures at Unakoti are those of Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman, Goddess Durga, Nandi, and Ravana. Other attractions around Unakoti include Jampui Hills, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Muraichara Eco Park, and Rajkandi Reserve Forest.

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Encompassed by lofty mountains and lush forests, Araku Valley makes for a nice excursion from the touristy Vizag . From limestone caves to waterfalls to coffee and tea plantations to museums, Araku promises a fantastic family holiday. The Ananthagiri Hills of Araku is home to the incredible Borra Caves, known as India’s largest caves.

Kids would have a great time learning about Andhra Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage at the Araku Tribal Museum . From here, you can visit the Padmapuram Botanical Garden and spend some quality time unwinding in the lap of nature. Then there’s Chaparai Waterfalls, also known as Dumbriguda Falls, where you can enjoy a nice picnic with your family. Foodies must try out Araku’s popular Bongulo Chicken. The tribal delicacy is made by cooking rice and chicken inside a bamboo stem.

Chatpal, Kashmir

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Himalayan Diary (@thehimalayan_diary)

If you are not too adamant about going sightseeing and doing everything touristy, let Chatpal give you a chance to show your kids that travel is not always about checking things off a pre-planned itinerary. Sometimes, travel is just about experiencing the place, appreciating its landscapes, and nurturing lifetime bonds with the locals at some offbeat family holiday destination.

Nestled away in a peaceful corner of southern Kashmir , Chatpal is located 90km from Srinagar and offers a pleasant stay away from the touristy bustle. Here, you will be welcomed by endless green meadows, sky-kissing pine trees, clear blue skies, and stunning mountain views. When in Chatpal, you can fancy nature walks, enjoy Kashmiri tea at local eateries, and visit apple and walnut orchards. If adventure excites you, the mountains of Chatpal offer great trekking opportunities.

Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh

Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh

This lesser-known town must be on your list for its grand pagodas, age-old monasteries, scenic charms, and lovely people. Namsai’s landscape features lush paddy fields, gurgling rivers, shiny pagodas, traditional bamboo houses, and inviting tea plantations. Home to the Tai Khampti and Singpho tribes of Arunachal Pradesh , Namsai is home to the famous Golden Pagoda, its top tourism hotspot, and an ideal location for an offbeat family holiday spot.

Also known as the Kongmu Kham, the pagoda will impress you with its zen vibes and well-kept lawns. Witnessing cute little monks indulge in their evening prayers is a delightful experience. You can also visit the Namsai Monastery for a truly enriching time. From Namsai, you can make daytrips to Parshuram Kund, Chongkham, Wakro and Jairampur.

Come monsoons and the country transforms into a lush green paradise! Enjoy a scenic visual treat like never before in various parts of India from June to September. Ayurvedic therapies and spa sessions accentuate the vacation delight during the rainy season, especially in the South. When summers knock on the climate door, especially in April, May, and June; tourists start with several outdoor activities, visit national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, any many destinations that bring the best of summer vacations. So, here we bring you a careful compilation of season-wise destinations to enjoy in India. Plan accordingly for utmost holiday delight.
