29 top cheap weekend getaways in the u.s..

Weekend getaways are often cheaper by default – especially in these destinations.

Top Cheap Weekend Getaways

Asheville, North Carolina, is one of the best places for an affordable weekend escape.

Sometimes you just need to escape from your everyday routine – but you may not have weeks (or funds) on end to spend away from home. For those seeking a quick, affordable trip, we've compiled a variety of cheap weekend getaways across the U.S., organized by region so you can find something within driving distance to keep costs low (or further afield if you're up for the journey).

Top Regional Destinations:

Burlington, vermont.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy Burlington, Vermont – especially since the best ways to experience it are low-cost or free. Rent bikes and go for a ride on the Burlington Bike Path, which later becomes the Island Line Trail – a stunning pathway over Lake Champlain. You can also stroll Church Street Marketplace, where the Burlington Farmers Market is hosted on Saturdays; sample sweets at Lake Champlain Chocolates; and enjoy a craft beer tasting or two.

Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls including American Falls in foreground and Horseshoe Falls in background, with autumn leaf colors

There's no cost to visit this iconic landmark , and if you want to get up close, you'll find several affordable tours of Niagara Falls – namely boat rides that'll get you up close to the roaring waters. A visit to Niagara Falls, New York, also omits the cost (and hassle) of getting or renewing a passport . Free and low-cost things to do in Niagara Falls include hiking state parks and sampling vinos along the Niagara Wine Trail.

Atlantic City, New Jersey

Cheap weekend getaways

You can enjoy an affordable weekend in Atlantic City – provided you steer clear of (or don't spend too much time at) the casinos. Instead, explore the beach and boardwalk, whose roots date back to 1870. Other budget-friendly things to do in Atlantic City including visiting Absecon Lighthouse (the tallest in New Jersey) and Lucy the Elephant. If you come here for a romantic getaway , treat yourself and your partner to dinner on the waterfront.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

"Factory Falls, Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, Poconos, Pennsylvania"

Spend as much or as little as you like in the Pocono Mountains. Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, the region's terrain affords a variety of free and low-cost activities amid beautiful scenery, from hiking and biking to fishing and boating. Lake Wallenpaupack, Hickory Run State Park and Lehigh Gorge State Park offer some of the best camping for those who'd like to keep lodging costs low, though you can also find affordable vacation rentals in the area.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg National Military Park (which also comprises the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center) is free to visit, and there's no cost to explore the Civil War battlefields with a national park ranger. Gettysburg ghost tours – a must for anyone who's interested in the area's haunted history – are relatively affordable, too, as are local hotels , which include options under $200 and $100 per night.

Farm Sanctuary: Watkins Glen, New York

Cheap weekend getaways

Farm Sanctuary in the Finger Lakes region of New York is part animal sanctuary, part country retreat – and an ideal location for a weekend escape from New York City . Travelers eager for a break can book a tiny home or cabin and spend time with more than 500 rescued farm animals in Watkins Glen. Nightly rentals start at $250 per night (plus a $25 membership fee) for up to two people in May through December, and include a special tour each morning of your stay. Sample the region's signature rieslings and chardonnays at some of the top wineries in the Finger Lakes during your visit, or hike to waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park .

Black Hills National Forest and Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Cheap weekend getaways

This area of the U.S. is home to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the fascinating caverns of Wind Cave, making it easy to see several iconic attractions in one jaunt. To save on entry fees, consider the America the Beautiful National Park Pass. Priced at $80, it provides access to all national parks and federally protected lands in the U.S., so you'll likely be able to use it for another trip down the road, too.

Table Rock Lake State Park, where you can swim, canoe, kayak, fish, hike and bike, as well as Branson Landing, which features a spectacular fountain show at night, are among the free attractions in Branson, Missouri . You can also ride a free trolley around town from March to December. The most expensive activity in Branson might be a visit to Silver Dollar City, though you can often find deals on tickets, like discounted evening rates in the fall. For affordable lodging in Branson , try the Thousand Hills Resort Hotel , which often lists rates around $100 per night.

Indianapolis, Indiana

There are a variety of free things to do in Indianapolis , including the Monon Trail, which connects downtown Indy to the Carmel area, with shops and restaurants along the way; the 250-acre White River State Park, perfect for a picnic lunch; and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which connects the city's public spaces. On the first Thursday of every month, the Newfields Art Museum offers free admission (and whether or not you go to the museum, the grounds alone are worth a visit). In the summer, Concerts on the Canal brings free entertainment to the area – just bring your own blanket or lawn chair.

Cheap weekend getaways

Washington, D.C.

With 22 free Smithsonian museums including the National Zoo, Washington, D.C. is an obvious choice for a cheap weekend getway. And while many hotels in D.C. are expensive, you can still find affordable accommodations on rental sites like Airbnb and Vrbo.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Cheap weekend getaways

Gulf Shores boasts more than 30 miles of white sand beaches , making it one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast . You don't have to visit during the summer to experience the area's best weather, though: Spring and fall bring temperatures that are still comfortable for sunbathing, swimming and strolling on the sand.

Budget-friendly things to do in Gulf Shores include bike riding at Gulf State Park; casting a line at Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier; exploring The Wharf, an entertainment and shopping venue; and visiting the Orange Beach History Museum and the Gulf Shores Museum, both of which are free. At local hotels like the Staybridge Suites Gulf Shores , nightly rates for apartment-style accommodations and free breakfast currently hover around $100 a night.

Massanutten Resort: Massanutten, Virginia

An ideal weekend getaway from Washington, D.C. , Massanutten Resort offers four-season fun, from winter sports like skiing and snowboarding to golf, mountain biking and water park action during warmer months. A la carte fees for many activities allow you to spend as much or as little as you'd like, and while there's a nightly resort fee, it covers access to the indoor and outdoor pools, playgrounds, sports courts (including pickleball), hiking trails and more. Plus, the resort fee doesn't seem so bad when you consider that townhomes and guest rooms are available for less than $150 a night.

Asheville, North Carolina

Situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is known for its mix of history (Biltmore Estate), nature (the Blue Ridge Mountains) and food (from craft breweries to a flourishing dining scene). Travelers can tackle a number of hikes in Asheville for some scenic – and low-cost – fun. You can also stroll along the 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail to learn about the city's unique past, go for a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and explore downtown, where you're bound to come across some of the tiny city's famous street performers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an easy and relatively affordable day trip from Asheville, too.

Bahia Honda Key, Florida

Cheap weekend getaways

You don't have to visit Key West – or break the bank – to experience the best of the Florida Keys; in fact, the best beaches in the Florida Keys are not even in Key West. At Bahia Honda State Park, for example, you can swim, rent kayaks and snorkeling gear, or even hop on a boat to snorkel in the Looe Key marine sanctuary reef. Entry fees at Bahia Honda State Park are $8 per vehicle with two to eight passengers. Plus, you can camp here for just $36 per night (not including tax and the utility and reservation fees). Renting a cabin costs about $120 per night plus fees from May through October, and slightly more in the cooler months.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Cheap weekend getaways

One of the most affordable beach destinations in the U.S., Myrtle Beach is known for its roster of low-cost or free activities that appeal to travelers of all ages. Explore the mile-long Myrtle Beach Boardwalk (home to the iconic Skywheel) as well as Broadway at the Beach (an entertainment complex), both of which offer live entertainment including music performances and fireworks shows. Vereen Memorial Gardens, just north of the city, is also free to visit. When it comes to Myrtle Beach accommodations , there are affordable options aplenty; the Crown Reef Resort, for example, offers an on-site, year-round water park and rates as low as $92 per night for a family of four.

Polk County, Florida

A vacation in Orlando has its time and place, but if you're on the hunt for a cheap weekend getaway, head to Polk County instead. Here, you can explore stunning (and free) parks and nature preserves such as Bok Tower Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, as well as Bonnet Springs Park. The park connects several attractions, including a kids treehouse, a rooftop bar, a butterfly house, The Florida Children's Museum, botanical gardens and more. Legoland Florida Resort and Peppa Pig Theme Park are close by if you decide to splurge on a theme park visit.

New Orleans

Cheap weekend getaways

There are more things to do in New Orleans than you could ever accomplish in a weekend, but you can still enjoy a short and cheap trip to The Big Easy. Ogle the historic houses in the Garden District, stroll along iconic Magazine Street, wander through the French Quarter (where you're bound to see street performers), or stop in a local eatery for a famous po'boy sandwich or beignet. For affordable accommodations in New Orleans , look outside of the French Quarter.

South Padre Island, Texas

A father and daughter fish in South Padre Island, Texas.

Not only does South Padre Island offer 34 miles of coastline and the cleanest beach water in Texas, but it's also ultra-affordable. Low-cost attractions include Sea Turtle, Inc., which is currently building the world's largest sea turtle hospital, and South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. There are also plenty of places to enjoy fishing, one of the island's most popular activities. A visit to the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site – the last Texas lighthouse open to the public – costs just $5 per adult ($3 for kids). Sandcastle Days, the island's beloved festival that is hosted every October, is also free.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Cheap weekend getaways

One of the most beautiful national parks in California , Joshua Tree National Park is also fairly affordable thanks to campgrounds like Jumbo Rocks, where you can enjoy the seclusion of the deserted wilderness. There are more than 100 primitive campsites available here, with reservations required in the busy season from September to May; a maximum of six people can occupy a campsite for just $20 per night (on top of fees to enter the park).

San Luis Obispo, California

Combining small-town charm with beautiful weather, San Luis Obispo is an ideal weekend getaway from Los Angeles (about 190 miles from the city). With the plethora of outdoor activities here, visitors can enjoy budget-friendly fun like hiking the area's trails, surfing in the ocean, zip lining or horseback riding. For local flavor, visit the Thursday evening farmers market or dine alfresco at one of many downtown patios. The town's free Concerts in the Plaza series features performances by the area's top artists. Beaches await those seeking relaxation in SLO, while wine lovers can explore the region's Edna Valley wineries.

Cheap weekend getaways

A glitzy getaway in Las Vegas can be yours – and it may be less expensive than you initially imagined. Hotels in Vegas can cost as little as $50 per night on weekdays (plus resort fees), and local attractions like Bellagio Fountains, the Fremont Street Experience, the Las Vegas Sign and Seven Magic Mountains (just outside the city) are all free to visit. This might just mean you'll have some room in your budget for a casino visit, tickets to one of the city's spectacular shows , and/or a tour of the Grand Canyon .

Sedona, Arizona

A couple mountain bikes on red rocks in Sedona, Arizona.

It won't cost you a penny to visit most attractions in Sedona , including Cathedral Rock, Devil's Bridge and Fay Canyon. And while Sedona's spa and wellness resorts are undoubtedly pricey, you can find lodging for less in off-peak months (summer and winter), as well as a variety of vacation rentals year-round.

Olympic National Park, Washington

Cheap weekend getaways

Olympic National Park is well worth a weekend visit, whether you want to hike, stargaze or explore its more than 70 miles of untouched Pacific Coast shoreline – which include dog-friendly beaches , if your furry friend wants to come along. While here, visit the famous Hoh Rain Forest, Lake Crescent and Rialto Beach. You can even camp within the park for as little as $40 per night for up to 10 people sharing a campsite. Note that you'll have to pay a fee to enter the park.

Albuquerque is quirky and fun, with an Old Town that features cobblestone streets and adobe-style buildings and is free to explore. Opt for a vacation rental rather than a hotel to save some coin.

San Antonio, Texas

Cheap weekend getaways

San Antonio is an affordable Texas destination brimming with cultural flair, historical significance and free activities. There's no cost to visit iconic attractions like the Alamo or the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, and you won't pay anything to stroll the famous River Walk (though dining at least once here is a must). Have a two-day trip coming up and aren't sure what exactly to pack? You don't want to over-pack and bring too many things that you wouldn't need. On the other hand, you don’t want to under-pack and fail to bring your essentials. No matter how or why you are traveling, knowing what to pack and what to leave at home will make your trip run as smoothly as possible.

Packing List

one night two days trip

Packing Clothing and Accessories

Step 1 Pack only the clothes you need.

  • 2 shirts/blouses
  • 2 trousers/jeans/skirts/shorts
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 3 pairs of socks/pantyhose

Step 2 Choose clothes you can wear for multiple purposes or events.

  • A white shirt or blouse
  • Black, brown, or gray trousers/skirt
  • Black, brown, or gray sandals
  • Black athletic shoes, when worn with trousers

Step 3 Limit your shoes.

  • Wedding band/engagement ring
  • Simple gold or silver necklace
  • Stud earrings

Packing Toiletries

Step 1 Decide what you can leave at home.

  • If you’re staying with friends or relatives, ask what they have on hand and if they’re willing to share. As a friendly gesture, offer to repay them with a meal, movie ticket, gift card, etc.

Step 2 Buy travel sizes.

  • Colored lip gloss
  • Powdered foundation
  • Eyeliner/eyeshadow combo stick

Avoiding Overpacking

Step 1 Check the weather at your destination.

  • Pack a small umbrella if the forecast calls for rain. If an unexpected deluge happens at a time that you absolutely must be outside, ask your host or front desk at the hotel if you can borrow a larger umbrella.

Step 2 Decide on your luggage.

  • Roll clothes that won’t wrinkle. These are usually tee-shirts, jeans, and casual clothes made of cotton. Place them in the bottom of your bag.
  • Fold clothes that can wrinkle. This includes cotton dress shirts and anything made of silk or satin. Place them on top of rolled items.
  • Fold longer articles in half. This includes trousers and long skirts. To create even layers, drape the top of the second article on top of the bottom of the first. [4] X Research source
  • Make use of spaces that remain. Look for smaller spaces between layers and between articles of clothing. Tuck socks, underwear, and chargers in these spaces.

Step 3 Maximize your laptop bag.

About This Article

Angela Rice

To pack for a 2-day trip, you’ll want to make sure you have all your essentials without overpacking. Pick a smaller piece of luggage, such as a backpack, duffel bag, or a small suitcase. Check the weather of your destination before packing so you only bring the clothes you need. You should also make a list of the activities you’re doing to better plan. For instance, if you’re going sightseeing one day and a party the next, you’ll probably just need 1 casual outfit, 1 dressier outfit, 2 pairs of shoes, underwear, pajamas, and socks. Besides clothes, you’ll want to bring travel-size containers of toiletries, like toothpaste, deodorant, and soap. Or, if you’re staying somewhere where toiletries will be provided, consider leaving these items at home to save space. If you wear makeup, only bring what you really need and plan to use. one night two days trip

Catherine Cruise

Overview of 2 days 1 night.

Halong bay is one of the most selected destinations for every traveler coming to Vietnam and to the northern region in specific. Some choose to spend a few hours while many want to stay for a few nights to see as much of what the bay has to offer. Among these itineraries, 2-day-1-night cruising is the most popular and favorite option.

one night two days trip

A 2D1N cruise means almost 24 hours on the bay. It is explained by the embarkation time at 12:00 pm and disembarkation time at around 11:00 am the next day of all overnight cruises. This itinerary provides a series of activities on and off the boat and the enchanting beauty of Halong Bay at different times of the day. Some may think that with just a short timeframe, it is challenging to explore the  bay's entire magnificent landscape. However, a wisely arranged time and itinerary will surely provide you with very enjoyable experiences for a fun-filled cruise vacation.

Once arriving at the cruise port, you will be assisted with luggage check-in by the cruise operator. Then, the crew member will escort you to embark the boat. A refreshing welcome drink and safety briefing is usually given before you check in your cabin and enjoy lunch. During lunch, the cruise sails to the bay and proceeds to the first attraction.

one night two days trip

In the afternoon, you are transferred to the first attraction by a small boat (tender). It could be a cave full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, an island with a sandy beach and panoramic view, or a cave submerged half by water and visited by a kayak. Some of the highlights are Surprise cave , Luon cave , Titop island , Dark-Bright cave , Tra Bau area, Ao Ech area, etc.

After the excursion, you can join a number of activities onboard or spend free time relaxing on the top deck with the perfect sunset view. After dinner, you'll have the option to engage in squid fishing, catch a movie, savor beverages from the bar, or unwind in the cabin.

one night two days trip

Cruises may offer a Taichi or Yoga session on the sundeck where you can soak up the fresh air and release the tiredness in your body and mind. You later enjoy a light breakfast while the ship cruises to the next attraction. Afterwards, you have time to freshen up and pack your luggage, check out your cabin, settle the bill (if any), and back to the dining area to savor a hearty breakfast. The trip ends at around 11:00 am.

Pros and cons

Although cruising for 2 days and 1 night brings plenty of merits, some demerits cannot be denied.

one night two days trip

Reasonable duration

Normally, you come from other locations and commuting back and forth to both destinations can consume several hours. Thus, a day cruise cruise feels hurried, leaving no room for relaxation. Conversely, a more extended two-night cruise excursion appears to strike the right balance, making it a safe and suitable choice for most travelers.

Affordable price

Obviously, overnight cruises cost more than day cruises and 1-night cruises cost less than 2-or-more night cruises. However, compared with the time you spend to travel from nearby regions to the bay, a 1-night itinerary is more valued for money.

In fact, Halong Bay cruises are classified into different levels such as cost-saving cruises (3-star), middle-level cruises (4-star), and upscale cruises (5-star). Hence, you completely can find a budget option with a bit higher price than a day cruise to have 24 hours on the bay full of activities.

Varied activities and excursions

The longer you stay on the bay, the more activities and excursions you can join. Yet, a 2-day trip fully offers you typical activities including kayaking, swimming, relaxing on the rowing boat, hiking to the mountain, watching the bay at dawn and dusk, and more . Better still, onboard activities such as cooking class, Taichi, sunset party, Happy Hour, and squid fishing are only offered on overnight cruises but not day cruises.

one night two days trip

Just 24 hours on the bay

2 days but not actually 2 days! This itinerary includes nearly 24 hours since the cruise departs daily and has to come back to the harbor to pick up new passengers. As a consequence, some may find it still short and do not have much time to rest among activities.

Crowded attractions

In comparison to the high daily volume of ships, the available travel routes are relatively limited. Consequently, it's almost inevitable that a significant influx of tourists will be visiting the attractions simultaneously. The less frequented routes are especially integrated into longer itineraries spanning 2 nights or more, allowing you to access more remote areas of the bay on smaller boats.

Questions and Answers (6)

Hello, my family of 3, husband n 10 year old girl thinking of doing a 2d1n cruise to Halong Bay on 6 or 7 dec. May I know which is a suitable cruise for us?

@Lindy, You can consider cruises for families with more facilities onboard such as Capella, Heritage Binh Chuan, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, Catherine Cruise, Genesis Luxury Regal Cruise, etc. These cruises are top luxury cruises with spacious rooms, so it is more comfortable to add one extra bed for your girl. You can also make use of modern facilities on these cruises such as outdoor pool, mini golf, spa, fitness center, poker room, karaoke, etc.

Good morning, We are two friends from Spain currently living in Thailand. We will be in Hanoi for four days and we wanted to visit Ha long bay. Our concern is not to fall into the mass tourism, cruises that do not respect the environment and local community, but we are also on a budget. We were wondering if there were any possibilities of doing one. night and two-day trip to Ha long bay from Hanoi that meets this criteria. Thank you very much in advance, Best, Laura.

@Laura, For budget cruises, we have some options such as Swan Cruise, Renea Cruise for Bai Tu Long Bay and Sapphire and Alova Cruise for Lan Ha Bay. These bays are less touristy and include pristine attractions. The price ranges from $130 - 140/pax for a 2 days/1 night tour (excluding transfer). Regards,

We are intending to book a 2D1N cruise for the 3 of u on 26 Jan 2024. We are 3 friends travelling together. One of my friend is pregnant. Can you recommend which is the most luxurious and comfortable cruise ship? Preferably one with a bigger room and 3 beds.

@Jennifer, Per your requests, you can choose luxurious cruises with triple cabins such as Essence Grand, Scarlet Pearl, Orchid Classic, Mon Cheri Cruise, etc. Although all the activities are optional and you can choose to relax all the time onboard, we advise your friend to consult her doctor before the trip to make sure her health is eligible for the trip. Regards,

Frequently asked questions

1. how many attractions does a 2-day itinerary include.

Depending on each cruise, the itinerary may include 2 to 3 attractions. On day 1, there are 1 or 2 attractions in the afternoon excursion while on day 2, there is only 1 attraction in the morning excursion.

2. Does the boat cruise all the time during the trip?

No. The boat cruises through the bay and drops the anchor at the attractions for a visit and at the sleeping area at night. Boats are not allowed to operate during night time for safety reasons.

3. What is included in a night trip?

Inclusions and exclusions are specified depending on each cruise’s policy. Generally, a 2-day journey includes the following:

  • 2-day-1-night itinerary and program
  • Cabins with air-con and private bathroom
  • Welcome drink
  • Entrance and sightseeing fees
  • Inhouse English-speaking tour guide
  • 4 Meals on board: 1 lunch, 1 dinner, 1 light breakfast, 1 breakfast
  • Activities mentioned in the program such as kayak, fishing equipment, sampan boat.
  • Onboard insurance

4. Is 2-day or day cruise better?

A 2-day cruise gives you more time to relax and enjoy nature as you have 24 hours onboard. There are a lot of activities and you can admire the bay from day to night. In contrast, a day cruise offers fewer activities but costs less and is suitable for those who have limited time yet want to have a glimpse of Halong Bay. Each type has its own pros and cons so the answer depends on your preference.

5. Do I stay overnight on the ship or in the hotel on the shore?

For a 2D1N itinerary, you will stay overnight on the ship. You embark on the boat at noon time (12:00-13:00) and disembark at a similar time (10:30-12:00).

Overnight Trip Packing List: Tips + Free Checklist

Overnight trip essentials laid out on bed ready for packing

Packing Tips for an Overnight Trip

You’ve got one night only. That should be easy, right? Wrong! Many things could still go south if you’re not adequately prepared. It’s one night only. Make sure you pack things right! Here are some tips to help you out.

Tip #1 - Go small or go home

Drop that suitcase. You’re gonna need a smaller bag. Having a small sized bag will allow you to pack less and will keep you from overpacking. This is just a one-night trip! Don’t end up looking like you’re packing for a month overseas. Remember to bring only the essentials of all essentials. Start with the basics and move your way down to the least significant items that you can live without for one night. Ultimately, you can choose between these three types of bags:

✓ Duffel Bag - This type of bag makes packing, carrying, and unpacking your essentials hassle free for an overnight trip. It has a wider space for your necessities to fit. Bonus: It also fits 2 medium size packing cubes so you can pack for 2 persons in 1 bag!

✓ Backpack - No, we’re not talking about that 10-foot backpack for a hiking trip. You don’t need anything fancy. Just a regular backpack will do. Again, this is just a one-night trip. Don’t overthink.

✓ Tote bag - Not the regular ones you bring to the beach. Take the size up a notch, like this Vera Bradley Tote Bag . Tote bags can be used for your daily-grind essentials and it can expand to become the perfect overnight trip bag.

Tote bag and overnight trip essentials in clear packing cubes

Essentially, you are only going to carry 2 bags during your overnight trip. The first one is your purse (for your personal items), and the second one is the travel bag of your choice. Either of the three works best for a short trip. Go with what you’re comfortable with.

Tip #2 - Minimize with Clear Pouches

Yes, you still need to organize your stuff even though it’s just a handful of items. An overnight trip is not an excuse to just cram all your essentials in the bag and go. Organizing for a long journey starts with minimizing things for an overnight trip. No matter the length of your travel, clear cubes and pouches will always be your friends.

✓ Small Cube - Perfect to store your clothes for a two-day, one-night trip.

✓ Circle Pouch Set - Use the larger pouch to keep your phone, cash, keys, cards, and other daily essentials. The smaller pouch can be used to keep your charger, cord or earphones from tangling.

✓ Half Moon Bag - Organize your basic makeup products in a cute and stylish way. This pouch is perfect for your beauty essentials and will keep your overnight bag neat and tidy.

Starter Set

Tip #3 - The only ‘extra’ you need is an extra small cube

Steer clear away from any “just in case” ideas. That’s the beginning of overpacking. We’re not only talking about clothes here but even when it comes to your toiletries, hygiene kit, medicine kit (yes, you still need one), and snack pack, keep everything light. Use Extra Small Cubes for your simplified toiletries, downsized hygiene kit, personalized medicine kit, or a favorites-only snack pack so you can easily organize them inside your travel bag.

Tip #4 - Despite the weather, wear Layers

Checking the weather will help you pack appropriate layers and outfits.  Looks like a hot day for shorts? Bring a jacket just in case it gets chilly later on. Looks like a cold day? Layer your outfit with a t-shirt underneath just in case the day heats up. Layers, layers, layers!

Tip #5 - Leave heavy electronics behind

If you’re thinking of entertainment for your trip, don’t even think about bringing your huge Bose earphones or your laptop (unless you’re planning to do some necessary work). Your phone and earbuds are the best for your short trip. Music, movies, books, news, basically, everything’s on your phone. No need to bring paperback novels, magazines, or game consoles. These things are just dead weight.

Tip #6 - Simplify your toiletry bag

Split your holiday-trip-packed toiletry in half and that will be good enough for your overnight trip. Remember, try to pack as light as possible. You’ll be gone and back in a jiffy, so take time to simplify your toiletry using travel size (TSA Approved) containers.

Quart Size Bag

Pro Tip: Keep one ‘travel-ready’ toiletry bag pre packed under your sink and check if something needs to be refilled. That way you don't have to always pack from scratch whenever you go on overnight or longer trips.

Tip #7 - Personalize a "mini meds" kit

Some people may think, it’s just a one night trip, why bother bringing a first aid kit? First of all, accidents don’t pick the kind of trip they wish to happen. Whether it’s for a long holiday vacation or an overnight one, the best you can do is to be ready. For overnight travels, personalize your medicine kit and bring all the important ones. Do you get dizzy during any sort of transit? Take Dramamine. Are you allergic to anything? Pack antihistamine cream or tablets. Do you have sensitive skin? Bring your skin rash cream. You get the idea.

Tip #8 - Mini hygiene kit (#covid19)

You can never be too careful while traveling these days. If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s to be keen on hygiene and washing of hands. That being said, always have your hygiene kit at your disposal. Wipe before you touch, and sanitize afterwards. Place your sanitation pack in your purse, along with your other personal items, for easy access.

Tip #9 - Downsize to 10 makeup products

Twenty different makeup brushes, eyeshadow palettes and more seem a bit too much for a one-night getaway, don’t you think? Let’s break it down to what you will really need for a quick overnight trip. Select the items that you think are the most essential. Challenge yourself to bring no more than 10 items in your makeup bag. Can you do it?

Clear makeup bag for an overnight trip

Tip #10 - Three outfits will do

You only need 3 outfits for an overnight trip: one, what you’re wearing for Day One; two, pajamas; and three, change of clothes for the next day. Now, sometimes things take an unexpected turn and you might not be able to stay just for a night (in case of an emergency). Instead of worrying, just bring an extra shirt and extra pair of undies. You’ll be fine! Also, throw in a jacket in case you go out for the night to throw over your Day 1 Outfit.

Pro Tip: Lay out your outfits all flat. This helps you decide whether what you’ve gathered is just enough or a little bit too much.

The Memorial Hall sits on enormous Liberty Square. The square is flanked by two equally classical Chinese buildings: the National Concert Hall and National Theater. For the best view and photos of the square, make sure you check out Liberty Square Arch on the western side. There are also some ponds, gardens, and walking paths around the square.

Tour the Historical Temples of Wanhua

Qingshui Temple - two days in Taiwan

Wanhua District is the Old City of Taipei, thus it is home to some of the city’s oldest and most important temples. Start with Longshan Temple, where fortunetellers gather outside and vendors sell traditional Chinese herbs in the narrow alley beside the temple. The temple is considered the city’s most sacred. Within walking distance of Longshan Temple, Qingshan and Qingshui Temples are small but highly significant and worth checking out. Finally, Taipei Tianhou Temple in Ximending is a peaceful abode right in the middle of the city’s trendiest neighborhood. Watch carefully for the tiny entrance on the busy street–it’s easy to miss. But once you enter the courtyard, you’ll forget about the hectic world outside.

Explore Funky Ximending

Ximending - Taipei Itinerary

After visiting Taipei Tianhou Temple (see the last entry), you’ll find yourself in Ximending, often shortened to Ximen, a pedestrian-only shopping district. This is where all the cool kids in Taipei hang out, plus it has some fascinating historical attractions.

Simply strolling the streets of Ximending is a feast for the eyes. Look out for Tattoo Street, Modern Toilet (a toilet-themed restaurant), cosplay cafés, claw machine arcades, KTV (karaoke), and MTV (private movie room) parlors, and bubble tea galore. Red House, a theater and market hall built during the Japanese colonial period, is now an arts & crafts market, while the remains of the Nishi Honganji Japanese shrine are worth checking out.

Feast at One of Taipei’s Night Markets

Night market in Taipei - 2 day Itinerary

One of the major highlights of visiting Taipei is the city’s legendary street food, so you absolutely can’t miss eating out in a Taipei night market. There are literally dozens of them, but the big five are Shiling Night Market, Raohe Night Market, Ningxia Night Market, Tonghua Night Market, and Huaxi Street Night Market. These markets feature a massive number of street food stalls, serving an unbelievable variety of classic and creative Taiwanese street foods.

While most tourists gravitate to the biggest one, Shilin Night Market, Raohe and Ningxia are more manageable in size, with a more local vibe and better food. Tonghua is conveniently located very close to Taipei 101, while Huaxi is right next to the city’s Red Light District and thus has a crustier edge to it.

Taipei in 2 Days: Day Two

Ride the maokong gondola.

Maokong Gondola - Taipei itinerary

Start your second day by taking the MRT to Taipei Zoo station and hopping on the Maokong Gondola. Within seconds you’ll be rewarded with grand views across Taipei before the gondola veers off into the verdant hills which surround the city.

Get off at the second last station to admire the incredible views from Zhinan (Chih Nan) Temple, then continue on to the final stop, Maokong. The area around Maokong is known for its excellent oolong teas, especially tieguanyin (Iron Goddess) and melon-scented baozhong.

Choose from one of the numerous teahouses, most of which have patios with great views, or go on a hike past tea plantations to Silver Stream Cave & Waterfall, a small temple buried in the woods.

Have a Picnic at Huashan 1914 Creative Arts Park

Huashan 1914 Creative Arts Park - Taipei itinerary

Returning to the city, get a take-away bento box for lunch and a few cold beers from 7-Eleven, then head to Huashan 1914 Creative Arts Park. The complex served as a sake distillery during the Japanese colonial period. In recent decades, the abandoned building has been converted into an arts venue, hosting numerous artworks, exhibits, cafés, restaurants, and events.

After exploring the facility and its creative photo ops, find a good spot on the huge lawn at the back to enjoy snacks and drinks in the sun for the afternoon.

View the City from Above at Taipei 101

View of Taipei from Above at Taipei 101

You can’t leave Taipei without visiting the country’s most iconic attraction, Taipei 101. Shaped like a towering stalk of bamboo, the skyscraper was the tallest in the world from 2004 to 2009. Today, it is said to be the tallest “green” building in the world, and it has the world’s fastest elevator.

The bottom five floors of Taipei 101 are a large department store. But for a true Taipei-101 experience, you have to pay a visit to the Observation Deck on the 89 th to 91 st floors. There you’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of the city and surrounding hills. Don’t miss the insanely large stabilizing ball hanging at the center of the building, which helps to prevent the building from toppling during an earthquake.

Watch the Sunset from Elephant Mountain

Sunset from Elephant Mountain - 2 days in Taipei

To bring an end to two perfect days in Taipei, why not watch the sunset from the city’s most famous viewpoint? Conveniently located right beside Taipei 101, Elephant Mountain is where you can find the classic postcard view of Taipei.

From Elephant Mountain MRT station (just one stop past Taipei 101, or easy walking distance), the trail is only a few minutes away. The staircase is steep, but it only takes about 20 minutes to reach the most famous viewpoint. Just prepare yourself for some crowds! If you want to get away from all the people, the trail continues on to three other animal-named mountains: Tiger, Lion, and Leopard.

Practical Information for Your 2 Day Taipei Itinerary

When is the best time to visit taipei.

When trying to choose the best time to visit Taiwan , no season is a clear winner. In Taipei, winters can be cool and damp, but it’s the best time for hot springs and cherry blossoms. Spring is lovely, but there’s a small rainy season in later May to early June. Summers are extremely hot and humid and beware of typhoons, but it’s also the best time to visit the beaches just out of town. Last but not least, autumn features lovely mild to warm weather, so it may be a contender for the best time.

How to Get from the Airport to the City Center

MRT: Only a few years old, the Taipei MRT Airport Line is the most convenient way to get from Taoyuan International Airport to the city center. The ride only takes 35 to 50 minutes (every second train is an express one) and only costs TWD160 (one-way). It’s never too busy, and there are large luggage racks. Bus: Before the airport MRT was built, the bus was the only budget option for reaching the city center. The buses still run, and the ride takes about one hour, with tickets costing around TWD135. Taxi: If you prefer to travel in privacy, there are numerous taxi stands outside. Depending on where exactly you are going in the city, expect to pay TWD800-1200, including the airport fee which the driver should add to your total at the end. Taxi drivers in Taiwan are honest, and scams are very rare, so this isn’t something you need to worry about. They don’t always speak English, so it’s better to show an address.

How to Get Around the City

MRT: The Taipei MRT is the lifeline of the city. It is fast, clean, and goes just about everywhere. Make sure to get an EasyCard before you ride, which is a reloadable card that you use to swipe on and off (including for the Airport MRT line). You can get it at any station, and it has a TWD100 deposit, which you get back at the end. Using a card is not only convenient but also makes each ride cheaper. YouBike: Taipei’s public bike-sharing system is called YouBike. You will see the bright orange and yellow bikes everywhere. You’ll need a local phone number and EasyCard with money on it to sign one out. The rates are very cheap, too. And the coolest part: they are made by Giant, one of the world’s top bicycle manufacturers, which of course is a Taiwanese company! Taxi: Taxis seem to be everywhere in Taipei. You could stand on just about any main road, and you’ll have a ride in minutes, if not seconds. The rates are very reasonable, too, but beware of traffic jams at peak hours. Most drivers speak a tiny bit of English, but it’s always best to show them an address. Bus: Once in a while, you may have to take a bus in Taipei, for example, to go to the National Palace Museum, Taiwan’s most famous museum. When you get on a bus in Taipei, it’s usually OK to get in the front or back door. If the sign inside says 上, you should swipe your EasyCard when boarding. If it says 下, then swipe it before leaving. If both characters are lit up, then you’ll have to swipe when getting on and again when getting off (usually for longer rides).

Well, that brings us to the end of the Taipei 2-day itinerary. Hopefully, you’ve found plenty of ideas for enjoying an awesome visit to this incredible city!

How to Visit Disney World in Two Days: 2 Day Itinerary

' src=

Disney World Orlando can easily be a week-long vacation, but Disney World in two days is doable too. I recently visited Disney World as the last stop on my east coast USA road trip .

Two days in Disney World was perfect to visit a couple parks, eat way too much park food, and soak in a bit of Disney Magic.

While it will be difficult to see everything in two days, this guide will explain how to spend your time seeing the highlights of Disney and your top two parks.

Keep reading to learn which parks to visit in Disney World in two days, what to eat, where to stay and much more. At the end of this planning guide, you will be fully prepared to book your two-day Disney World vacation!

2 Day Disney World Itinerary

If you are planning a two day Disney World vacation, one of the biggest questions you may be asking yourself is “can you do Disney World in 2 days.”

The short answer is yes, you can visit Disney World in 2 days. You will be able to see 2-3 parks, ride a ton of the most popular attractions, and eat a ton of great Disney food .

However, you aren’t going to be able to see everything in Disney World in 2 days. The parks are too big and too spread out to visit all four in two days.

You may be tempted to get a two day park hopper and hit two parks per day. DON’T DO IT. It takes around an hour to get between each park so you will waste way too much time commuting and not enough time enjoying.

Below, I’ll explain if you have 2 days at Disney World which parks to visit. It really depends on your specific interests. At a high level, here are two itinerary options for two days in Disney World:

Option 1: 1 Park per Day

If you want to get a deep experience at each park, I recommend visiting only one per day. If I had to choose two parks to visit, I’d choose Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Option 2: 3 Parks in Two Days

If you prefer faster travel, you could squeeze three parks into two days. On the first day, visit either Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios, since they are the bigger parks. One day two, get a park hopper to visit EPCOT and Animal Kingdom, since there is slightly less to do in these parks.

Which Parks to Visit in Disney World in Two Days

The biggest decision when visiting Disney World in two days is which parks to visit. Each park has its own appeal and honestly all of them are great choices.

My recommendation with only two days in Disney is to visit Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. However, which Disney World parks to visit during your trip depends on your interests.

Below are the pros to each park to help you decide which parks are best for you to visit. I break down the highlights of each park and what they’re each best for.

Magic Kingdom

big thunder mountain railroad

Best for : Visit Magic Kingdom for the most “Disney” experience.

Magic Kingdom is the most “Disney” of all the WDW theme parks. Created after the original Disneyland, Magic Kingdom is made from Walt Disney’s vision. Here, you will find all the classic Disney characters such as Mickey, Minnie, and the princesses.

It includes the iconic Cinderella’s castle, all the “mountain” rides (Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain), and Main Street USA.

Magic Kingdom also has lands such as Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Adventureland and liberty square.

A one day Magic Kingdom itinerary will be packed, which is why I do not recommend park hopping to another park the same day as Magic Kingdom.

Hollywood Studios

galaxys edge theme park

Best for : Visit Hollywood Studios for all the newest attractions in Walt Disney World.

Disney World has recently spent a lot of time updating and enhancing Hollywood Studios . In the past five years, they have added Toy Story Land and Star Wars Galaxy edge. Here you will find amazing attractions such as smugglers run, rise of the resistance and slinky dog dash.

In addition to these new areas, Hollywood Studios has the tower of terror, Mickey and Minnie’s runaway railway and rock’n roller coaster. These are all great Disney rides and will provide a bit of an adrenaline rush.

Animal Kingdom

Best for : Visit Animal Kingdom if you are an Avatar or animal lover.

The land of Pandora is the newest area in Animal Kingdom and offers a lot of Disney Magic. The theming throughout will transport you into the movie and the rides are great.

Animal Kingdom also offers attractions with real animals, great for all animal lovers and young kids.

epcot park entrance

Best for : Visit EPCOT if you are a foodie or plan to drink around the world.

EPCOT has the world showcase, it areas for many different countries. EPCOT has the best food and drinks of all the Walt Disney World parks.

Come here for a day of eating and drinking with some rides intermixed. The most popular rides in EPCOT are Soarin’ Around the World, Test Track, Frozen Ever After, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

Where to Stay in Disney World

disney polynesian villiage resort

One way to save time during your 2 days at Disney World is by choosing a hotel near the parks you plan to visit. Unlike Disneyland , the resorts and parks at Disney World are very spread out and take around an hour to get between.

The first consideration is whether to stay on Disney property or offsite. I highly recommend staying on property to save transportation time and have access to the perks such as extra magic hours, priority reservations, and complimentary transportation.

Another great way to save time during your two days in Disney World is booking your accommodation next to one of your target parks. Save time by staying near one of your intended parks.

The below resorts are my favorites in Disney World due to their location, luxurious design, and unique themes.

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort

Nearby Parks : Hollywood Studios and EPCOT

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin is not an official Disney hotel, but does reside on Disney property and offers many of the same perks. The benefit of the Swan and Dolphin is their affiliation with Marriott Bonvoy. Bonvoy points can be earned or redeemed during your stay.

Additionally, the resort is large, luxurious, and reasonably priced. The resort has multiple pools, a lakeside beach, restaurants for all occasions and a high-end spa.

Polynesian Village Resort

Nearby Park : Magic Kingdom

The theming at the Polynesian Village Resort is my favorite out of all WDW hotels. The Polynesian and Moana theme extend throughout the resort, grounds, and rooms. For the ultimate experience, book an overwater bungalow room.

If you stay at the Polynesian Village Resort, be sure to book a dinner at Ohana, their family style Polynesian restaurant.

Grand Floridian

The Grand Floridian is quintessential Disney. While this resort is often among the most expensive, it delivers with luxury, fantastic amenities, and exceptional customer service. Stay here for the classic Disney experience with easy access to Magic Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom Lodge

Nearby Park : Animal Kingdom

If visiting Animal Kingdom is high on your priority list, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a great place to stay. Designed in a safari style, this resort mimics the theme of Animal Kingdom and feels like a piece of Africa here in the states.

Overview of Disney Genie and Lightning Lanes

If you are planning a Disney World vacation, chances are you have come across mention of Genie+ and lightening lanes. For a first timer, this system can be super overwhelming. If you are familiar with Disney’s fastpass system, Genie+ is essentially the newest version of it. First, here are some definitions that may help:

Disney Genie – The Disney Genie is an AI tool on the Disney app that helps you plan your day in a Disney park. The tool starts by collecting your interests, then suggests a daily itinerary that will help you visit those interests throughout the day. This tool is great in concept, but I think planning on your own will be the best use of time. Genie+ – Genie+ is a paid service, around $15 per person, per day that allows you to access lightening lanes throughout the day. Lightening Lane – A lightening lane is a priority lane that can be accessed in two ways. 1) Booking a timeslot using Genie+ and 2) purchasing an individual lightening lane. Individual lightening lanes are offered for a few attractions per park and cost additional money.

Genie+ Strategy and Tips

If you only have two days in Disney World, I highly recommend purchasing Genie+. The lightning lane wait times are typically 10 minutes or less, compared to 40+ minutes in the standby line.

If you purchase Genie+, there are some restrictions to consider:

  • You can begin reserving lightning lanes when the park opens the day you plan to visit
  • You can book a lightning lane every 2 hours, or if you have no active LL reservations. Choose reservations that are early in the day so you have time to redeem multiple.
  • Individual lightning lane reservations do not count toward your one reservation at a time quota.

To use Genie+, I recommend the following strategy. The goal is to redeem as many lightning lanes as possible, on the rides you most want to hit.

  • If you are interested in the individual lightning lane attractions, purchase them at the start of the day. Individual lightning lanes are typically the most popular attractions in each park and cost around $10 per person.
  • Make a list of the top 3 genie+ lightning lane attractions you want to hit
  • Once reservations open for the day, book whichever ride in your top 3 has the earliest return time
  • Once you hit this ride, get another lightning reservation that has the soonest return time. This may or may not be a ride in your top 3, depending how the time slots are filling up.
  • Continue reserving additional lightning lanes as soon as you can, until you ride them all.
  • If you are unable to catch a time slot for your priority 3 rides, plan to visit them at the end of the day when the standby lines are shorter.

Park Hopping in Disney World in Two Days: Is it Worth it?

If you are trying to see all of Disney World in two days, you may be attempted to park hop two parks each day. While this is doable, I recommend sticking to the two parks you selected above.

Park hopping can take at least and hour which will take away from your time in the parks. My philosophy is to spend two full days in two parks, versus partial days in all of them.

If you choose to park hop, I recommend hopping from a lower priority park to EPCOT around dinner time. That way, you can spend most of the day in the first park then hit EPCOT for dinner and drinks.

Be sure to reference the current park hours to plan out your hopping strategy.

General Tips for Disney World

Disney World Cinderella's Castle

In general, planning for Disney World can be a bit overwhelming. There are a lot of small details in a Disney vacation that take a bit of understanding to plan.

The following three items are crucial to planning and preparing for Disney, especially with a short duration of your vacation.

  • Research and Prioritize your Vacation – Since you will squeeze everything in Disney World in two days, it is important to understand your goals and priorities for the trip. This guide is a great starting point as I will outline my view of the best things to do in Disney in two days. Some things to research are rides, parks, and food.
  • Get your theme park tickets early – Disney World tickets can sell out, be sure to get them early to set yourself up for success. Disney has also recently implemented park reservations which are even more likely to fill up. Again, being early is key.
  • Book Dining Early – Planning is key to secure reservations for Disney World dining. Book dining reservations at the start of your window to ensure you can try the restaurant at the top of your list. If you run into issues securing reservations, you can set up notifications through Mouse Watcher to snag booked dining.

Quick Tips for Disney Springs

one night two days trip

When in Disney World, I highly recommend visiting Disney Springs for shopping and dinner. Disney Springs is the larger equivalent of Downtown Disney in California.

There are many restaurants, Disney stores and retail stores. Below are some of the cant-miss spots in Disney Springs:

  • Gideons Bakehouse – the best cookies in Disney World, be sure to join the virtual queue early
  • World of Disney – all the Disney merch you could ever need, all in one place
  • Morimoto Asia – my favorite restaurant in Disney Springs, serving a variety of Asian dishes
  • Disney springs food trucks – Tons of different options with something for everyone. Try the pickle corn dog if you dare.

What to Wear to Disney World

one night two days trip

The final tip I have for 2 days in Disney World is what to wear. Dressing up for Disney is definitely part of the fun. I love wearing simple clothes such as a romper or jean shorts, with 1-2 themed items.

For more details, check out my guide to what to Wear to Disney world for each park . Above are some easy Disney World outfit ideas as well.

FAQ – Two Days at Disney World

Yes, you can see a lot of Disney World in 2 days. 2 days in Disney World is enough time to visit 2-3 parks, ride a ton of attractions, and eat a bunch of tasty Disney food.

No, you cannot see all 4 Disney World parks in 2 days. It would be way too cramped trying to visit four parks in two days and you would waste time commuting instead of enjoying the vacation.

To see everything at Disney World, you would need at least 4 days. This would allow one day in each park to deep-dive all the rides, attractions, characters, and food.

Summary of Disney World in Two Days

While two days in Disney World is not enough time to see all the parks and all the hotels and all of Disney springs, this guide outlines how to see the highlights. Book a stay at a nearby hotel to cut down on travel time and to experience the “Disney bubble”.

Pick two parks to visit, I recommend Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Finally, explore Disney Springs to round out the perfect quick trip to Disney.

Making the Most of Two Days at Universal Orlando Resort

While we could easily spend a week at the Universal Orlando Resort, most families are only going to get a few days to explore and enjoy the parks. We brainstormed and polled the kids on what their favorite activities were and came up with this fool-proof plan for making the most of two days at Universal Orlando.

We’ll cover some other important points too, like where to stay and why, but our goal is to equip you with a loose itinerary for enjoying Universal Studios Florida, Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay water theme park.

Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are exciting parks. This is our easy itinerary for the best things to do at Universal Orlando in just two days.

How to make the most of two days at Universal Orlando

Let’s actually start with what you can skip or save for later , as the best way to make the most of two days at Universal Orlando is actually by not wasting time.  Here are our top attractions or activities to stick a pin in for next time or if you have more than two days at the parks:

Universal City Walk – yes, you’ll need to walk through at least a portion of the Universal City Walk to access the parks, but don’t linger or shop during park hours.

Stage or audience participation shows – even though they may be fun and funny, save the shows for the random rainy day or when you’re super tired and want to just sit.

Hard Rock Cafe Universal City Walk from water taxi Orlando 1

Commonplace attractions – even though the carousel in Seuss Landing is fun and full of great Dr. Seuss creatures, you can go for a spin anywhere. Same with playground areas. (unless your kids really need to let loose)

By cutting these pieces out of your plan or just not getting distracted by them, you’ll save yourself hours of waiting, wading through crowds and just general sitting. Don’t get me wrong, all of these things have a place and time, but not when you only have two days at Universal Orlando.

Note : for those of you visiting Universal Orlando Resort with little kids, check out our full article about doing the parks with small children. We highlight the best attractions and areas with little ones and for families with kids 6 and under, our guide is pretty much a life-saver.

Another aspect of making the most of two days at Universal Orlando is cutting out the travel time. Booking a room at one of the Universal Orlando Hotels with the ferries is the best option to save time, but if you’re staying off property, there are lots of great, budget friendly hotels around Orlando .

Tips for Skipping the Line at Universal Orlando

There are three super easy ways to not get caught up in lines during your two days at Universal Orlando. One will cost you (potentially) and the other two are just smart time management.

Take Advantage of Early Entry

Whether your goal is to be the first one to enter Diagon Alley for the Harry Potter rides or you want to start your day racing around San Francisco on Fast & Furious: Supercharged! , early entry into either Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure will help you knock out a few goals on your two days at Universal Orlando list.

Who gets Early Entry at Universal Orlando?

Well, guests at the different Universal Orlando Resort hotels do. Some travel agency tickets may also offer early entry passes with ticket purchase, but the best way to get to the parks early and into them before everyone else is by staying on property. Example: specific early entry to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is available to those at Sapphire Falls, Hard Rock, Portofino and Royal Pacific hotels.

Recommendation : Loews Sapphire Falls Resort , Hard Rock Hotel , Royal Pacific , and Portofino Bay all have water taxi service to the entrance of the parks, so for the fastest route AND to skip Universal City Walk in the morning, stay at one of these properties.   Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort is directly adjacent to Volcano Bay, so staying there will give you the most direct access for early entry into Volcano Bay.

Leverage the Tapu Tapu system in Volcano Bay

I’m just assuming that you plan on spending some time in Volcano Bay while you’re at the Universal Orlando Resort, because it’s totally awesome and by far the most fun waterpark we’ve ever been to. Upon entering Universal’s Volcano Bay each guest is given a Tapu Tapu wristband. This can be used to pay for things inside the park, to activate fun water features as you explore, and most importantly, to check you into the queue for some of the most popular water slides.

Taylor Family with Tapu Tapus at Universal Volcano Bay Water Theme Park Orlando 1

Before you enter Volcano Bay, do a little research about which slides you really want to hit so that you know where to tap into.  We recommend Krakatau (the aquacoaster), Ko’okiri Body Plunge (the biggest drop-slide) or Honu (the funnest raft slide). Tapping into any of these and then enjoying the Fearless River or a smaller slide is a great way to maximize fun in the water and is definitely key to making the most of two days at Universal Orlando.

Note : if you’re tapped into one slide and then tap into another, it’ll pull you out of the virtual queue for the first, so don’t go tapping everything thinking that you’ll beat the system, cuz no, you won’t.

Get the Universal Express Pass

This is an additional cost to the general tickets into the Universal Orlando parks, unless you’re staying at either Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel, or Royal Pacific hotels.  The Express Pass might not be needed or that valuable to you and your family, but if you just have two days at Universal Orlando and the parks are busy (think Spring Break, Summer, or Christmas) the Express Pass will save you loads of time and stress.  Nearly all attractions have an Express entrance or line, and each time you going through the Express line you’ll save anywhere from five minutes to an hour.

Example : you do the Express Pass line from Kings Cross Station in Universal Studios and ride the Hogwarts Express into Islands of Adventure, and not only do you save time by not having to walk out of one park and over to the other, and you don’t have to go through the entry plazas and walk through several areas to get to Hogsmeade , but you get a cool attraction experience and avoid lots of crowds. It’s genius and just one example of using the Express Pass.

The Must-see Attractions for two days at Universal Orlando

The following are our favorite rides and what we’d hit up before anything else. If you only have two days to have the maximum fun, then trust our recommendations.

Note :  many of the attractions in both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure function off of simulated motion. If you aren’t great at things whizzing by you while you wear (or don’t wear) 3-D glasses, you need to consider that before you wait in line for an attraction of that sort.

Top attractions in Universal Studios Florida

We’ll break this down for you by area so it’s the easiest, starting with the busiest attraction and working our way down.

Inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley

The biggest draw in Universal Studios Florida, for us and most of our friends, is Diagon Alley . While there are some shows on the stage in the Alley , there are some really cool experiences to have too. Escape from Gringotts is the primary attraction, and it’s AWESOME, but the other side of the fun is casting spells all around, including within Knockturn Alley.

Tip : there are a few super secret spells that you can cast in Diagon Alley . Look for the dragon poop or the blank parchment, just to name a few. You have to find the magic in you to cast the proper spell. 😉

Best Action Attractions in Universal Studios

The newest attraction in Universal Studios Florida is Fast & Furious: Supercharged! While the attraction itself wasn’t my favorite (not really into cars, I guess), the technology is kind of amazing and it draws a good crowd. If you can cross this one off your list early, do it!

Being a child of the 80s, Transformers: the Ride 3D ,  is one of my favorite rides. The effects are awesome and the queue is pretty cool, but as a heads up, the ride is INTENSE. If you’re sensitive to the simulated motion I mentioned previously, this ride will get you, but it’s worth it if you can stomach it. Really fun and then you can actually meet Bumble Bee or Optimus Prime (and maybe even Megatron) afterwards.

Tip : if intense motion isn’t your thing, it’s totally okay to settle for getting a picture with Optimus Prime. 🙂

Another very popular attraction, but again, not my favorite, is Jimmy Fallon’s Race Through New York . The queue is the best part, particularly the live performance of barbershop rap. Love it!  If you do have time, try to hit up Jimmy Fallon before heading to Islands of Adventure.

MUST DO :   Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit . This attraction is amazeballs . It’s the ultimate roller coaster in my book, with some intense speed, G-force and awesome music. It is a roller coaster in the truest sense, so if you’ve been itching for the real, intense motion of an amusement park ride, this is your ticket!

Tip : do the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit  at night for an extra cool view and fun way to close out your day.

Best Universal Studios Attractions not to miss WITH KIDS

Minion Mayhem . Seriously. If ever you wanted to be a part of the Despicable Me world, this is your chance. The queue is cute and gets pretty involved, and then the actual attraction is really well done with great effects.

Note : with small kids, this may be a bit too intense. The motion, both real and simulated, can be pretty scary for little kids.

Now closed permanently, Curious George Goes to Town was always my favorite small kid attraction, but as of 2023 it’s no more. Now Universal Studios is much less small-kid friendly, but with updates set to premier in 2025 we’ll see…

Top Attractions in Universal’s Islands of Adventure

I could just say that EVERYTHING within Universal’s Islands of Adventure is a must-see, as most of it is, but these are really the best of the best for your two days at Universal Orlando.

Highlights of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade

If there’s one attraction not to miss in Hogsmeade it’s the light show on Hogwarts Castle – Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts… or the actual ride within Hogwarts. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey combines all sorts of theater and animatronics to create a unique attraction experience. Totally scary for little kids, but totally awesome for any true Harry Potter fan.  And totally random but awesome idea: after visiting Hogsmeade try to work in Harry Potter sights (or look-alike spots) when you visit Europe. You’ll be totally insprired after visiting Islands of Adventure .

Hogsmeade Wizarding World of Harry Potter Islands of Adventure Universal Orlando 5

The BEST rollercoaster in Universal’s Islands of Adventure is also in this part of the park: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure . If you are trying to make the most of your time at Universal, I would say that Hagrid’s is a much better wait, both for how interesting it is AND the actual ride, than waiting for the Velocicoaster . Both rides are incredible, but Hagrid’s is more fun.

Note : there is no shame in sitting in Hogsmeade relaxing and enjoying a Butterbeer or actual beer from the Hogs Head Tavern. This experience is also a must-do and it’s the only time we’ll tell you that sitting will help you make the most of your two days at Universal Orlando.

Best Water-rides in Islands of Adventure

It’s funny to have done Universal Orlando with just adults and then also with just our kids. Our dudes don’t like to be surprise soaked, but our adult friends do! With several attractions on or involving water, you’ve got options, but the two BEST water-rides are NOT Jurassic Park River Adventure .

Taylor Family at Toon Lagoon Universal Islands of Adventure Orlando 2

The two most awesome water-rides I’ve ever done in any theme or amusement park in any country are both located in Toon Lagoon:  Dudley Do-Right’s  Ripsaw Falls  and Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges . Wow. Both of these attractions perfectly combine the element of surprise with fun theming and a truly ridiculous amount of water. Never have I ever gotten this soaked except when I was pushed into the lake as a kid. Seriously. So awesome!

Tip : only wear the most necessary clothing for either of these rides because every person will get utterly drenched. I can’t imagine that the ponchos Universal sells even help.

Can’t-miss Action Rides in Islands of Adventure

Ask ten different people and you’ll get ten different answers what their favorite attraction is in Islands of Adventure.  Chris will tell you that the Incredible Hulk is the greatest roller coaster around, hence the favorite here. If you ask me (Rob) I’m going to send you directly to Skull Island: Reign of Kong . I love the story, the production, the thrill, everything.

I know, we still haven’t sent you to Jurassic Park River Adventure or the Velocicoaster , well now’s your chance to ride. Yes, you’ll get wet on the river ride (the most wet in the front row) but the coolest aspect of it is actually the dinosaurs up inside the attraction. The featured creatures and action are a bit different on this ride than at Universal Studios Hollywood, but it’s similar enough that if you’ve done the one in California and only have two days at Universal Orlando, we’ll tell you to hit up Jurassic Park if you do have the time or the line is nice and short. The Velocicoaster is much more exciting and intense, so if the wait times are similar, do that instead.

Best Rides for Kids in Islands of Adventure

Seuss Landing is a really fun area with some rides that are ideal for small kids (go read our article about Universal Orlando with Small Kids), but our favorite, hands down, was the  The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride.   It has two different tracks so if you do it a few times you’ll have different experiences. The view from the train is also beautiful, especially at night when Islands of Adventure is all lit up.

Taylor Family in Seuss Landing Universal Islands of Adventure Orlando 16

Bonus: if you’ve got a kid or two with you and you’re going through Jurassic World, you (the adult) can ride with them on the Pteranodon Flyers. Adults can’t ride this on their own, but leverage having a child with you to get to do it.

How to Add Volcano Bay to Two Days at Universal

Volcano Bay is actually worth its own full day or even its own visit if you’re a Florida local. It’s the best waterpark in the state and totally awesome to add to your Universal Trip. I know, there are so many things to do in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, but if you want to throw Volcano Bay into the mix as a break from the parks you totally can. Here’s how:

Taylor Family at Universal Volcano Bay Water Theme Park Orlando 3

  • Start each of your two days at Universal Orlando in one of the theme parks
  • Be dressed to easily transition to Volcano Bay (have your swimwear on already)
  • When it’s lunch time grab a bite and make the switch to Volcano Bay for about three hours
  • After sufficient water fun, head back to your hotel to change or just go back into the parks (you will dry off eventually)

It really is as easy as this. We did this two days straight and loved every moment of it. Mixing Volcano Bay into our time in the Universal Orlando Resort parks gave us a change of pace while still ensuring we maximized our time. It made the kids extra happy because, well, water park.

Putting a priority on fun over doing absolutely everything in your two days at Universal Orlando, you’ll feel good about the memories you’re creating with your family and friends; you’ll keep everybody’s spirits up instead of stressing to do it all; you’ll know what you loved and what you want to check out next time and you’ll be ready to plan your next Universal Orlando adventure!

What a timely piece now! Thank you so much for such a fantastic post.

Monday 23rd of July 2018

As someone who gets vertigo really, really easily, I like the rides at Universal overall way better than at WDW. If I start to feel dizzy on a simulator ride, I can close my eyes, recalibrate my brain, and be fine. This does not work on most of the rides at Disney, because your body is still moving all over the place, but because most of the rides at Universal are simulators, it works really, really well.

Visiting Universal Orlando is my dream thing to do and your post was so inspiring and motivational, Rob and Chris. An exceptional guide to make most of the time there!

Two sailings in one trip? What to know about 'side-to-side' cruises

A s I walked into the cruise terminal at Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades with my passport in hand, I had deja vu. I pulled up the boarding pass on my phone, dropped my duffle bag on the conveyor belt at security and shuffled up to the check-in counter with more practiced precision than usual, almost as if I’d rehearsed it.

That’s probably because I had gone through almost the same process just 72 hours earlier at PortMiami. I disembarked a Norwegian Cruise Line ship and boarded a sailing with Celebrity Cruises the same day last month, known as a side-to-side cruise.

Side-to-side and back-to-back cruises allow passengers to extend their trips by taking consecutive sailings, each with distinct benefits. Here’s what passengers should know:

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

What is a side-to-side cruise?

Guests sailing side-to-side disembark one ship and board another on the same day.

That allowed Richard and Jasmine Ramnarine to combine a family vacation with a romantic getaway. After taking a six-night Carnival Cruise Line cruise from Miami with their family in November 2022, Jasmine’s parents took the couple’s daughters back home to Atlanta. Meanwhile, they continued on another sailing with adults-only brand Virgin Voyages .

Richard, 37, described the experiences as “night and day.”

The couple, who run the travel and lifestyle YouTube channel A Rich and Jazzy Life , took two distinct sailings and cut down on time spent in transit by heading straight from Carnival Celebration to Virgin’s Valiant Lady.

Each had their own unique dining and beverage options, design elements and activities (Celebration features the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster , for instance, while Valiant Lady has an onboard tattoo parlor). “You don't have to travel all the way home again,” Richard said. “You get two cruises with just one trip to Miami.”

For me, knowing I had brought all my cruise essentials – sunscreen, bathing suit, tie and jacket for the formal night – with me on Norwegian Viva also made boarding my second cruise on Celebrity Ascent less stressful (just be sure not to toss any prohibited items in your bag between sailings). Cruise lines also offer laundry services , so guests don't have to bring enough clothes for two voyages.

Jasmine, 35, noted that cruise lines often have themed events that call for specific attire, so travelers may want to pack strategically. “So, you want to make sure that you have your red outfit (for Virgin’s Scarlet Night), your pajamas for the pajama party on Virgin, then you want to have your all-white outfit for (Carnival’s White Hot Night Party),” she said.

What is a back-to-back cruise?

Back-to-back cruises are consecutive sailings on the same ship.

Passengers have to get off the ship and board again but typically do so before or after other passengers have disembarked. “You'll get escorted off, you'll say hello to the customs officer, and you'll turn around and go through the boarding process again,” said Susan Guthrie, a travel agent and owner of Cruisin' with Susan and More, affiliated with Travel with Sparkle. “But it's very fast. There's no lines.”

Those guests can also leave their luggage on the ship. She cautioned that travelers must contact the cruise line directly – or through their travel agent – to link the bookings so they can avoid having to go through the full embarkation process a second time.

What is wave season?: Why you should book your next cruise now

And just because you're on the same ship doesn't mean everything will be identical. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, for example, many cruise lines alternate itineraries – such as Eastern to Western – on longer sailings, giving guests a chance to sample different parts of the region, according to Guthrie. “If you stay in the same room, you really develop a nice relationship with your stateroom attendant because you'll keep the same one for the next cruise,” she added.

Are side-to-side or back-to-back cruises cheaper?

Cruise lines don’t typically offer discounts for sailing multiple times in a row, but both tactics can save travelers money. Passengers can take more than one cruise while only having to book a single set of flights. They also save on booking a pre-cruise hotel stay for the second itinerary since they’re already at their departure point, among other costs.

In my case, marrying two cruises gave me a best-of-both-worlds trip. Trading in the thrilling rides and musicals of Norwegian Viva for the more laid-back Celebrity Ascent was as easy as an Uber ride between ports.

25 Questions (and Answers!) About the Great North American Eclipse

The McDonald Observatory’s guide to one of nature’s most beautiful and astounding events: What you might see, how to view it safely, how astronomers will study it, how animals might react, and some of the mythology and superstitions about the Sun’s great disappearing act.

different-eclipses-NASA

1. What’s happening?

The Moon will cross directly between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun from view along a narrow path across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Viewers across the rest of the United States will see a partial eclipse, with the Moon covering only part of the Sun’s disk.

2. When will it happen?

The eclipse takes place on April 8. It will get underway at 10:42 a.m. CDT, when the Moon’s shadow first touches Earth’s surface, creating a partial eclipse. The Big Show—totality—begins at about 11:39 a.m., over the south-central Pacific Ocean. The shadow will first touch North America an hour and a half later, on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Moving at more than 1,600 miles (2,575 km) per hour, the path of totality will enter the United States at Eagle Pass, Texas, at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The lunar shadow will exit the United States and enter the Canadian province of New Brunswick near Houlton, Maine, at 2:35 p.m. (3:35 p.m. EDT).

3. How long will totality last?

The exact timing depends on your location. The maximum length is 4 minutes, 27 seconds near Torreon, Mexico. In the United States, several towns in southwestern Texas will see 4 minutes, 24 seconds of totality. The closer a location is to the centerline of the path of totality, the longer the eclipse will last.

4. What will it look like?

Eclipse veterans say there’s nothing quite like a total solar eclipse. In the last moments before the Sun disappears behind the Moon, bits of sunlight filter through the lunar mountains and canyons, forming bright points of light known as Baily’s beads. The last of the beads provides a brief blaze known as a diamond ring effect. When it fades away, the sky turns dark and the corona comes into view— million-degree plasma expelled from the Sun’s surface. It forms silvery filaments that radiate away from the Sun. Solar prominences, which are fountains of gas from the surface, form smaller, redder streamers on the rim of the Sun’s disk.

5. What safety precautions do I need to take?

It’s perfectly safe to look at the total phase of the eclipse with your eyes alone. In fact, experts say it’s the best way to enjoy the spectacle. The corona, which surrounds the intervening Moon with silvery tendrils of light, is only about as bright as a full Moon.

During the partial phases of the eclipse, however, including the final moments before and first moments after totality, your eyes need protection from the Sun’s blinding light. Even a 99-percent-eclipsed Sun is thousands of times brighter than a full Moon, so even a tiny sliver of direct sunlight can be dangerous!

To stay safe, use commercially available eclipse viewers, which can look like eyeglasses or can be embedded in a flat sheet that you hold in front of your face. Make sure your viewer meets the proper safety standards, and inspect it before you use it to make sure there are no scratches to let in unfiltered sunlight.

You also can view the eclipse through a piece of welder’s glass (No. 14 or darker), or stand under a leafy tree and look at the ground; the gaps between leaves act as lenses, projecting a view of the eclipse on the ground. With an especially leafy tree you can see hundreds of images of the eclipse at once. (You can also use a colander or similar piece of gear to create the same effect.)

One final mode of eclipse watching is with a pinhole camera. You can make one by poking a small hole in an index card, file folder, or piece of stiff cardboard. Let the Sun shine through the hole onto the ground or a piece of paper, but don’t look at the Sun through the hole! The hole projects an image of the eclipsed Sun, allowing you to follow the entire sequence, from the moment of first contact through the Moon’s disappearance hours later.

6. Where can I see the eclipse?

In the United States, the path of totality will extend from Eagle Pass, Texas, to Houlton, Maine. It will cross 15 states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Tennessee, and Michigan (although it barely nicks the last two).

In Texas, the eclipse will darken the sky over Austin, Waco, and Dallas—the most populous city in the path, where totality (the period when the Sun is totally eclipsed) will last 3 minutes, 51 seconds.

Other large cities along the path include Little Rock; Indianapolis; Dayton, Toledo, and Cleveland, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania; Buffalo and Rochester, New York; and Burlington, Vermont.

Outside the path of totality, American skywatchers will see a partial eclipse, in which the Sun covers only part of the Sun’s disk. The sky will grow dusky and the air will get cooler, but the partially eclipsed Sun is still too bright to look at without proper eye protection. The closer to the path of totality, the greater the extent of the eclipse. From Memphis and Nashville, for example, the Moon will cover more than 95 percent of the Sun’s disk. From Denver and Phoenix, it’s about 65 percent. And for the unlucky skywatchers in Seattle, far to the northwest of the eclipse centerline, it’s a meager 20 percent.

The total eclipse path also crosses Mexico, from the Pacific coast, at Mazatlán, to the Texas border. It also crosses a small portion of Canada, barely including Hamilton, Ontario. 7. What causes solar eclipses?

These awe-inspiring spectacles are the result of a pleasant celestial coincidence: The Sun and Moon appear almost exactly the same size in Earth’s sky. The Sun is actually about 400 times wider than the Moon but it’s also about 400 times farther, so when the new Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun—an alignment known as syzygy—it can cover the Sun’s disk, blocking it from view.

8. Why don’t we see an eclipse at every new Moon?

The Moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted a bit with respect to the Sun’s path across the sky, known as the ecliptic. Because of that angle, the Moon passes north or south of the Sun most months, so there’s no eclipse. When the geometry is just right, however, the Moon casts its shadow on Earth’s surface, creating a solar eclipse. Not all eclipses are total. The Moon’s distance from Earth varies a bit, as does Earth’s distance from the Sun. If the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun when the Moon is at its farthest, we see an annular eclipse, in which a ring of sunlight encircles the Moon. Regardless of the distance, if the SunMoon-Earth alignment is off by a small amount, the Moon can cover only a portion of the Sun’s disk, creating a partial eclipse.

9. How often do solar eclipses happen?

Earth sees as least two solar eclipses per year, and, rarely, as many as five. Only three eclipses per two years are total. In addition, total eclipses are visible only along narrow paths. According to Belgian astronomer Jean Meuss, who specializes in calculating such things, any given place on Earth will see a total solar eclipse, on average, once every 375 years. That number is averaged over many centuries, so the exact gap varies. It might be centuries between succeeding eclipses, or it might be only a few years. A small region of Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky, close to the southeast of St. Louis, for example, saw the total eclipse of 2017 and will experience this year’s eclipse as well. Overall, though, you don’t want to wait for a total eclipse to come to you. If you have a chance to travel to an eclipse path, take it!

10. What is the limit for the length of totality?

Astronomers have calculated the length of totality for eclipses thousands of years into the future. Their calculations show that the greatest extent of totality will come during the eclipse of July 16, 2186, at 7 minutes, 29 seconds, in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of South America. The eclipse will occur when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth, so it appears largest in the sky, and Earth is near its farthest point from the Sun, so the Sun appears smaller than average. That eclipse, by the way, belongs to the same Saros cycle as this year’s.

11. When will the next total eclipse be seen from the United States?

The next total eclipse visible from anywhere in the United States will take place on March 30, 2033, across Alaska. On August 22, 2044, a total eclipse will be visible across parts of Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The next eclipse to cross the entire country will take place on August 12, 2045, streaking from northern California to southern Florida. Here are the other total solar eclipses visible from the contiguous U.S. this century:

March 30, 2052 Florida, Georgia, tip of South Carolina May 11, 2078 From Louisiana to North Carolina May 1, 2079 From Philadelphia up the Atlantic coast to Maine September 14, 2099 From North Dakota to the Virginia-North Carolina border

12. What is the origin of the word ‘eclipse?’

The word first appeared in English writings in the late 13th century. It traces its roots, however, to the Greek words “ecleipsis” or “ekleipein.” According to various sources, the meaning was “to leave out, fail to appear,” “a failing, forsaking,” or “abandon, cease, die.”

13. Do solar eclipses follow any kind of pattern?

The Moon goes through several cycles. The best known is its 29.5-day cycle of phases, from new through full and back again. Other cycles include its distance from Earth (which varies by about 30,000 miles (50,000 km) over 27.5 days) and its relationship to the Sun’s path across the sky, known as the ecliptic (27.2 days), among others. These three cycles overlap every 6,585.3 days, which is 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours.

This cycle of cycles is known as a Saros (a word created by Babylonians). The circumstances for each succeeding eclipse in a Saros are similar—the Moon is about the same distance from Earth, for example, and they occur at the same time of year. Each eclipse occurs one-third of the way around Earth from the previous one, however; the next eclipse in this Saros, for example, will be visible from parts of the Pacific Ocean.

Each Saros begins with a partial eclipse. A portion of the Moon just nips the northern edge of the Sun, for example, blocking only a fraction of the Sun’s light. With each succeeding eclipse in the cycle, the Moon covers a larger fraction of the solar disk, eventually creating dozens of total eclipses. The Moon then slides out of alignment again, this time in the opposite direction, creating more partial eclipses. The series ends with a grazing partial eclipse on the opposite hemisphere (the southern tip, for example).

Several Saros cycles churn along simultaneously (40 are active now), so Earth doesn’t have to wait 18 years between eclipses. They can occur at intervals of one, five, six, or seven months.

The April 8 eclipse is the 30th of Saros 139, a series of 71 events that began with a partial eclipse, in the far north, and will end with another partial eclipse, this time in the far southern hemisphere. The next eclipse in this Saros, also total, will take place on April 20, 2042.

14. What about eclipse seasons?

Eclipses occur in “seasons,” with two or three eclipses (lunar and solar) in a period of about five weeks. Individual eclipses are separated by two weeks: a lunar eclipse at full Moon, a solar eclipse at new Moon (the sequence can occur in either order). If the first eclipse in a season occurs during the first few days of the window, then the season will have three eclipses. When one eclipse in the season is poor, the other usually is much better.

That’s certainly the case with the season that includes the April 8 eclipse. It begins with a penumbral lunar eclipse on the night of March 24, in which the Moon will pass through Earth’s outer shadow. The eclipse will cover the Americas, although the shadow is so faint that most skywatchers won’t notice it.

15. How can astronomers forecast eclipses so accurately?

They’ve been recording eclipses and the motions of the Moon for millennia. And over the past half century they’ve been bouncing laser beams off of special reflectors carried to the Moon by Apollo astronauts and Soviet rovers. Those observations reveal the Moon’s position to within a fraction of an inch. Using a combination of the Earth-Moon distance, the Moon’s precise shape, Earth’s rotation and its distance from the Sun, and other factors, astronomers can predict the timing of an eclipse to within a fraction of a second many centuries into the future.

Edmond Halley made the first confirmed solar eclipse prediction, using the laws of gravity devised only a few decades earlier by Isaac Newton. Halley forecast that an eclipse would cross England on May 3, 1715. He missed the timing by just four minutes and the path by 20 miles, so the eclipse is known as Halley’s Eclipse.

16. What are the types of solar eclipses?

Total : the Moon completely covers the Sun.

Annular : the Moon is too far away to completely cover the Sun, leaving a bright ring of sunlight around it.

Partial : the Moon covers only part of the Sun’s disk.

Hybrid : an eclipse that is annular at its beginning and end, but total at its peak.

17. What are Baily’s beads?

During the minute or two before or after totality, bits of the Sun shine through canyons and other features on the limb of the Moon, producing “beads” of sunlight. They were first recorded and explained by Edmond Halley, in 1715. During a presentation to the Royal Academy of Sciences more than a century later, however, astronomer Frances Baily first described them as “a string of beads,” so they’ve been known as Baily’s beads ever since. Please note that Baily’s beads are too bright to look at without eye protection!

18. Will Earth always see total solar eclipses?

No, it will not. The Moon is moving away from Earth at about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) per year. Based on that rate of recession, in about 600 million years the Moon would have moved so far from Earth that it would no longer appear large enough to cover the Sun. The speed at which the Moon separates from Earth changes over the eons, however, so scientists aren’t sure just when Earth will see its final total solar eclipse.

19. How will the eclipse affect solar power?

If your solar-powered house is in or near the path of totality, the lights truly will go out, as they do at night. For large power grids, the eclipse will temporarily reduce the total amount of electricity contributed by solar generation. During the October 14, 2023, annular eclipse, available solar power plummeted in California and Texas. At the same time, demand increased as individual Sun-powered homes and other buildings began drawing electricity from the power grid. Both networks were able to compensate with stations powered by natural gas and other sources.

The power drop during this year’s eclipse could be more dramatic because there will be less sunlight at the peak of the eclipse.

20. What are some of the myths and superstitions associated with solar eclipses?

Most ancient cultures created stories to explain the Sun’s mysterious and terrifying disappearances.

In China and elsewhere, it was thought the Sun was being devoured by a dragon. Other cultures blamed a hungry frog (Vietnam), a giant wolf loosed by the god Loki (Scandinavia), or the severed head of a monster (India). Still others saw an eclipse as a quarrel (or a reunion) between Sun and Moon. Some peoples shot flaming arrows into the sky to scare away the monster or to rekindle the solar fire. One especially intriguing story, from Transylvania, said that an eclipse occurred when the Sun covered her face in disgust at bad human behavior.

Eclipses have been seen as omens of evil deeds to come. In August 1133, King Henry I left England for Normandy one day before a lengthy solar eclipse, bringing prophesies of doom. The country later was plunged into civil war, and Henry died before he could return home, strengthening the impression that solar eclipses were bad mojo.

Ancient superstitions claimed that eclipses could cause plague and other maladies. Modern superstitions say that food prepared during an eclipse is poison and that an eclipse will damage the babies of pregnant women who look at it. None of that is true, of course. There’s nothing at all to fear from this beautiful natural event.

21. How do animals react to solar eclipses?

Scientists haven’t studied the topic very thoroughly, but they do have some general conclusions. Many daytime animals start their evening rituals, while many nighttime animals wake up when the eclipse is over, perhaps cursing their alarm clocks for letting them sleep so late!

During the 2017 total eclipse, scientists observed 17 species at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. About three-quarters of the species showed some response as the sky darkened. Some animals acted nervous, while others simply headed for bed. A species of gibbon had the most unusual reaction, moving excitedly and chattering in ways the zookeepers hadn’t seen before.

Other studies have reported that bats and owls sometimes come out during totality, hippos move toward their nighttime feeding grounds, and spiders tear down their webs, only to rebuild them when the Sun returns. Bees have been seen to return to their hives during totality and not budge until the next day, crickets begin their evening chorus, and, unfortunately, mosquitoes emerge, ready to dine on unsuspecting eclipse watchers.

A NASA project, Eclipse Soundscapes, is using volunteers around the country to learn more about how animals react to the changes. The project collected audio recordings and observations by participants during the annular eclipse last year, and will repeat the observations this year. Volunteers can sign up at eclipsesoundscapes.org

22. How will scientists study this year’s eclipse?

Astronomers don’t pay quite as much professional attention to solar eclipses as they did in decades and centuries past. However, they still schedule special observations to add to their knowledge of the Sun and especially the inner edge of the corona.

Sun-watching satellites create artificial eclipses by placing a small disk across the face of the Sun, blocking the Sun’s disk and revealing the corona, solar prominences, and big explosions of charged particles known as coronal mass ejections.

Because of the way light travels around the edges of an eclipsing disk, however, it’s difficult to observe the region just above the Sun’s visible surface, which is where much of the action takes place. The corona is heated to millions of degrees there, and the constant flow of particles known as the solar wind is accelerated to a million miles per hour or faster, so solar astronomers really want to see that region in detail. The eclipsing Moon doesn’t create the same effects around the limb of the Sun, so a solar eclipse still provides the best way to look close to the Sun’s surface.

For this year’s eclipse, some scientists will repeat a series of experiments they conducted in 2017 using a pair of highaltitude WB-57 aircraft to “tag team” through the lunar shadow, providing several extra minutes of observations.

Other scientists will use the eclipse to study Earth’s ionosphere, an electrically charged layer of the atmosphere that “bends” radio waves, allowing them to travel thousands of miles around the planet. Sunlight rips apart atoms and molecules during the day, intensifying the charge. At night, the atoms and molecules recombine, reducing the charge.

Physicists want to understand how the ionosphere reacts to the temporary loss of sunlight during an eclipse. They will do so with the help of thousands of volunteer ham radio operators, who will exchange messages with others around the planet. During last October’s annular eclipse, when the Moon covered most but not all of the Sun, the experiment showed a large and immediate change in the ionosphere as the sunlight dimmed.

NASA also will launch three small “sounding” rockets, which loft instruments into space for a few minutes, to probe the ionosphere shortly before, during, and shortly after the eclipse.

Another project will use radar to study changes in the interactions between the solar wind and Earth’s atmosphere, while yet another will use a radio telescope to map sunspots and surrounding regions as the Moon passes across them.

One project will piece together images of the eclipse snapped through more than 40 identical telescopes spaced along the path of totality to create a one-hour movie of the eclipse. The telescopes will be equipped with instruments that see the three-dimensional structure of the corona, allowing solar scientists to plot how the corona changes.

23. What have astronomers learned from eclipses?

Solar eclipses have been powerful tools for studying the Sun, the layout of the solar system, and the physics of the universe.

Until the Space Age, astronomers could see the Sun’s corona only during eclipses, so they traveled around the world to catch these brief glimpses of it.

Eclipses also offered a chance to refine the scale of the solar system. Watching an eclipse from different spots on Earth and comparing the angles of the Moon and Sun helped reveal the relative sizes and distances of both bodies, which were important steps in understanding their true distances.

During an eclipse in 1868, two astronomers discovered a new element in the corona. It was named helium, after Helios, a Greek name for the Sun. The element wasn’t discovered on Earth until a quarter of a century later.

An eclipse in 1919 helped confirm General Relativity, which was Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity. The theory predicted that the gravity of a massive body should deflect the path of light rays flying near its surface. During the eclipse, astronomers found that the positions of background stars that appeared near the Sun were shifted by a tiny amount, which was in perfect agreement with Einstein’s equations.

Today, astronomers are using records of eclipses dating back thousands of years to measure changes in Earth’s rotation rate and the distance to the Moon.

24. How did astronomers study eclipses in the past?

With great effort! From the time they could accurately predict when and where solar eclipses would be visible, they organized expeditions that took them to every continent except Antarctica, on trips that lasted months and that sometimes were spoiled by clouds or problems both technical and human.

During the American Revolution, for example, a group of Harvard scientists led by Samuel Williams received safe passage from the British army to view an eclipse from Penobscot Bay, Maine, on October 21, 1780. Williams slightly miscalculated the eclipse path, though, so the group missed totality by a few miles. (The expedition did make some useful observations, however.)

In 1860, an expedition headed by Simon Newcomb, one of America’s top astronomers, journeyed up the Saskatchewan River, hundreds of miles from the nearest city, braving rapids, mosquitoes, and bad weather. After five grueling weeks, they had to stop short of their planned viewing site, although at a location still inside the eclipse path. Clouds covered the Sun until almost the end of totality, however, so the expedition came up empty.

King Mongkut of Siam invited a French expedition and hundreds of other dignitaries to view an eclipse from present-day Thailand in 1868. He built an observatory and a large compound to house his guests at a site Mongkut himself had selected as the best viewing spot. The eclipse came off perfectly, but many visitors contracted malaria. So did Mongkut, who died a few weeks later.

An expedition in 1914, to Russia, was plagued by both clouds and the start of World War I. The team abandoned its instruments at a Russian observatory and escaped through Scandinavia.

The eclipse of July 29, 1878, offered fewer impediments. In fact, it was a scientific and social extravaganza. The eclipse path stretched from Montana Territory to Texas. Teams of astronomers from the United States and Europe spread out along the path. Thomas Edison stationed his group in Wyoming, where he used a tasimeter, a device of his own creation, to try to measure the temperature of the corona. Samuel Pierpoint Langley, a future secretary of the Smithsonian, was atop Pikes Peak in Colorado. Maria Mitchell, perhaps America’s leading female scientist, decamped to Denver. And Asaph Hall, who had discovered the moons of Mars just the year before, journeyed to the flatlands of eastern Colorado.

Thousands of average Americans joined the festivities, paying outrageous prices for some of the best viewing spots. Some things, it seems, never change.

25. What about lunar eclipses?

While solar eclipses happen during new Moon, lunar eclipses occur when the Moon is full, so it aligns opposite the Sun in our sky. The Moon passes through Earth’s shadow. In a total eclipse, the entire lunar disk turns orange or red. In a partial eclipse, Earth’s inner shadow covers only a portion of the Moon. And during a penumbral eclipse, the Moon passes through the outer portion of Earth’s shadow, darkening the Moon so little that most people don’t even notice it.

Lunar eclipses happen as often as solar eclipses—at least twice per year. This is a poor year for lunar eclipses, however. There is a penumbral eclipse on the night of March 24, with the Moon slipping through Earth’s faint outer shadow, and a partial eclipse on the night of September 17, in which the Moon barely dips into the darker inner shadow. Both eclipses will be visible from most of the United States.

How strong is a 4.8 earthquake? Quake magnitudes explained.

one night two days trip

The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck New Jersey on Friday generated shaking that could be felt from Washington, D.C., to north of Boston.

About 55 earthquakes a day – 20,000 a year – are recorded by the National Earthquake Information Center . Most are tiny and barely noticed by people living where they happen. Click here to see the USDA shake map for the most recent earthquakes.

Worldwide, there are on average about 16 major earthquakes in any given year, 15 in the magnitude 7.0 range and one 8.0 or greater, according to records going back to 1900.

The United States typically has around 63 earthquakes between magnitude 5.0 and 5.9 each year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey , about five between 6.0 and 6.9 and fewer than one between 7.0 and 7.9.

A major 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning , killing 12 people and injuring over 1,000. The strongest earthquake there in a quarter century was followed by a series of aftershocks, reaching up to 6.4 magnitude.

More earthquakes are being recorded around the globe, but that doesn’t mean there are more earthquakes happening , according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Instead, it’s because there are more measurement devices, called seismometers, that record vibrations and they have been deployed in more places.

Earthquakes are a natural part of life on Earth, a geologically active planet with seven major tectonic plates. These are continent-size slabs of rock that glide over the planet’s mantle, constantly but very slowly reshaping Earth’s landscape.

What does magnitude mean in an earthquake?

Magnitude is a measurement of the strength of an earthquake . Officially it's called the moment magnitude scale . It's a logarithmic scale , meaning each number is 10 times as strong as the one before it. So a 5.2 earthquake is moderate, while a 6.2 is strong.

The magnitude and effect of an earthquake, according to Michigan Technological University :

  • Below 2.5: Generally not felt
  • 2.5 to 5.4: Minor or no damage
  • 5.5 to 6.0: Slight damage to buildings
  • 6.1 to 6.9: Serious damage
  • 8.0 or greater: Massive damage, can destroy communities

Intensity scales, measured in Roman numerals, are used to describe how strong the earthquake felt to people in the area.

According to the California Earthquake Authority , an intensity of I is typically felt only under especially favorable conditions. An intensity of IV, which leads to light shaking, is felt indoors by many, but not typically outdoors. It might awaken some people at night and lead to a sensation like a truck striking a building. A parked car would rock. Intensities VI and above would be strong, frightening and felt by all, with the damage increasing up to an X, where the shaking would be violent. Some well-built wooden structures would be destroyed and most masonry and frame structures along with their foundations would be ruined.

You might have heard the term " the Richter Scale " used to describe earthquakes, but it is no longer commonly used because it was only valid for certain earthquake frequencies and distance ranges.

Why does an earthquake's depth matter?

Magnitude measures how strong a quake is. That said, how much the ground shakes depends on an earthquake's intensity, which in turn depends on two things: how far away the actual site of the temblor was and the kind of soil it which it occurs.

This is why an earthquake's depth is often given. The epicenter of the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles in 1994 was in the San Fernando Valley, the point where the quake was strongest. But the hypocenter , the location where the quake actually occurred, was more than 11 miles underground. If it had been closer to the surface, the 6.7 magnitude quake would have been even more devastating.

The type of ground matters , too. Bedrock shakes least, sand and gravel as much as two times more, and mud and landfill as much as five times more. This was a major factor in why some areas of San Francisco suffered more than others in the Loma Prieta quake of 1989 .

Why real earthquakes aren't like in the movies

Though movies like " San Andreas" and "Earthquake" show entire coastlines dropping into the ocean, it's not going to happen.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, while a "mega-quake" with a magnitude of 10 or larger is "theoretically possible," it's very unlikely .

The magnitude of an earthquake depends in part on the length of the geological fault on which the quake occurs. Longer faults result in stronger earthquakes.

There are no known faults capable of generating a magnitude 10 or larger. The San Andreas fault of movie fame couldn't produce a quake larger than about 8.3 given its length, according to the USGS.

The largest earthquake in U.S. history was the 1964 Good Friday quake in Alaska , a 9.2 magnitude temblor that killed 131 people. It lasted four and a half minutes and ran along the Aleutian fault.

What's the chance of an aftershock?

Any time there's an earthquake, one concern is that it was merely a foreshock to a bigger quake that's coming.

Globally, the probability that one earthquake will be followed by a large earthquake within three days is somewhere just over 6%, according to the USGS .

That means whenever there's an earthquake, there's about a 94% chance that it wasn't a foreshock and there won't be any more quakes linked to it.

The numbers are a little different for California, which is very seismically active. There, about half of the biggest earthquakes were preceded by foreshocks, according to the USGS. But that means half were not.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know if any one quake is a foreshock.

Aftershocks  are defined as smaller earthquakes that happen in days after a larger quake. As the USGS puts it, they represent "minor readjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the mainshock."

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Fake flights and caravans are the two most common items being sold by fraudsters in relation to travel, Lloyds Bank's research has found.

As Britons head online to book deals for the upcoming bank holidays and summer, they have been urged to "remain vigilant", with the average holiday scam victim being conned out of £765.

Amid rising flight costs post-COVID, people have been flocking to social media and other lesser-known websites to secure cheaper deals.

A food delivery company claims to have created an  "unshakeable bag" to avoid spillage in transit.

Bolt, which owns the Bolt Food delivery platform, said its design is based on gyroscope technology and will keep food stable "during the most abrupt movements".

In a post to its website, the firm said it would make the design available to its competitors as it is "too powerful to be owned by any one company".

"We believe everyone should enjoy a perfect meal, regardless of which app they order it from," it said.

Assaulting a shopworker is to be made a separate criminal offence after a government U-turn following pressure from campaigners.

The government previously said "more legislative change" was not needed to tackle the "intolerable violence and abuse" faced by shopworkers, arguing it did not think it was "required or will be most effective".

But Rishi Sunak is now set to announce his government will be amending the Criminal Justice Bill to bring in the new offence.

The drugmaker was on its knees when Sir Pascal Soriot took over in 2012.

But under his leadership it now does just about everything the UK wants from a business - creating high value-added jobs and developing products that improve people's lives.

The FTSE 100's performance has lagged that of many of its peers, both in the United States and Europe, more or less since the Brexit vote in 2016.

That poor performance has reflected the poor valuation of many UK-listed companies - resulting in numerous foreign takeovers of UK businesses in recent months and years.

It has also led to a scarcity in the number of companies floating on the London Stock Exchange, most notably the  Cambridge-based chip designer ARM Holdings , which last year opted to list in the US instead.

The situation has alarmed the government, which has announced a number of reforms  aimed at raising the UK's attractiveness .

An imminent shareholder vote on Sir Pascal's pay makes a particularly interesting test case because few would dispute that he has been the most outstanding FTSE 100 chief executive of his generation.

This rise could take his potential earnings to £18.5m this year - which critics say is excessive.

England's average house price has risen by £103,000 over the last decade, while the average annual wage has risen by £7,734.

But some areas have seen homeownership affordability decline more than others...

The London borough of Barking and Dagenham has seen the most significant fall, according to moving platform Getamover.

The platform found the area has seen house prices more than double to £380,000 in the last 10 years - but wages have only risen by £2,182.

Hillingdon in West London took the second spot, with the average property shooting up by £230,000 to £495,000, while the average income increased by just £143.

While London remains the most unaffordable region, the East Midlands has also seen a notable fall.

Oadby and Wigston in Leicestershire ranked fifth in the table, with the average house price increasing by £129,000 and the median annual income growing by £2,644.

Gedling ranks sixth among the areas of England where the affordability of buying a home has declined most.

The Nottinghamshire region has seen house prices soar by 84.8% to £231,000, while the average income has risen by just 13.11% to £33,454.

You can see how other areas fared in the table below...

Rishi Sunak's post-Brexit rules for foreign workers are getting tough press in Italy this week - with claims they could mark the end of Italian waiters in London.

April saw the minimum salary requirement for a skilled worker visa increase from £26,200 to £38,700 - a near 50% rise as the government tries to reduce immigration.

Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica published an article on its site headlined "Italians in London, the long goodbye" after the new rule was brought in this month.

There were an estimated 342,000 Italians living in the UK in 2021, according to the latest Office for National Statistics census data.

La Repubblica said the new rule change would lead to the "end of the story" of Italy's "ancient roots" in the capital, which was founded by the Romans in 43 AD.

Separately, Italian journalist Antonio Polito wrote in the Corriere della Sera newspaper that the new salary for skilled workers was "an amount that no young novice can realistically earn".

"Thus London gives up one of its great assets, the fact of being an offshore and cosmopolitan city," he said.

Mr Sunak's post-Brexit rule change has worried hospitality bosses who are still struggling to get to grips with a post-COVID reality and rising costs.

Conor Sheridan, founder of Nory and Mad Egg restaurant chain, previously told the Money blog that roughly 14% of his 15,000 UK employee base were on working visas that could be affected.

Trade body UKHospitality also said the changes would "further shrink the talent pool that the entire economy will be recruiting from".

As the migration law came in, Home Secretary James Cleverly said it was "time to turn off the taps and end the flow of cheap workers from abroad".

"We are refocusing our immigration system to prioritise the brightest and best who have the skills our economy needs, while reducing overall numbers," he said.

Several of the UK's biggest supermarkets closed their gender pay gap in the last year - while Morrisons saw the biggest rise, figures show.

Ocado and Lidl reduced their gap by the largest amounts in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, while Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Co-op, Iceland and Waitrose owner John Lewis also saw a reduction.

The data comes from the government's gender pay gap service and states the difference in hourly rates of pay.

In contrast to other big-name brands, Morrisons saw its mean pay gap widen to 12.5% from 7.6%. M&S also saw a slight increase from 12.5% to 12.6%.

The mean figure gives the best overall view of the gender pay gap but includes extreme values which could skew the average.

Of the 11 biggest UK supermarkets, Co-op has the largest pay gap with 13.2%, followed by M&S and Morrisons.

An M&S spokesperson said: "We're committed to driving equal opportunities and making M&S a great place to work for women. Encouragingly our median pay gap has decreased, and women now make up more than 50% of our UK store management population, but we know there is more to do.

"We're making progress with the launch of new initiatives, talent programmes, and policies, including our flexible working offer – Worklife, a Job Share Finder, and our industry-leading family leave offer."

A spokesperson for Co-op said: "We are committed to treating our colleague member owners fairly, and this includes driving equitable outcomes for female colleagues. We've seen a significant reduction in our gender pay gap since we started to report data in 2017, and this year's data shows further progress towards closing it.

"It's important to reiterate that we don't pay people differently based on their gender at Co-op. The gender pay gap is caused by us having fewer females in leadership role, where salaries are higher.

"Our focus on improving representation remains, as we know this is one of the key drivers causing the gender pay gap. Today, 40% of our leadership population are female - this is not enough, which is why we’ve launched a series of development programmes and have a coaching and mentoring offer to support women with career progression.

"We know there’s still much to do in this space and will hold ourselves to account and continue to strive for gender equality."

Morrisons has also been contacted for comment.

Every Thursday we look at a different savings option, explain the pros and cons, and reveal the best deals on the market (see table below for that).  This week we're talking about the best notice accounts. Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes  says this...

As with the rest of the savings market, the top notice account rates have started to fall. However, there are stalwarts like the Investec 90-day notice account that are holding steady and as a result offering savers an opportunity to earn a little more, while not having to tie up their cash for too long.

A relatively unused aspect of the savings market, notice accounts offer a bit of a halfway house, with the best rates available generally paying more than the top easy access rates, but will more flexibility of access than a fixed term bond.

Just as it sounds, these savings accounts require you to give notice in order to access your money without a penalty. The usual notice period ranges from 30 to 120 days, although there are some accounts on the market that require six months or even a year's notice.

Another record month for Heathrow. Last month was the busiest ever March for the UK's biggest airport, the second record-breaking month in a row.

It was also the busiest Easter weekend as Good Friday became the busiest ever direct departure day, when 118,000 people began their journey at the airport.

It shows, despite cost of living pressures, lots of Britons were going on holiday.

More good news for Heathrow came earlier this week as planned strike action by 600 border force officers was called off to allow for negotiations in its dispute over working patterns.

Oil prices are still high, hanging around $90. A barrel of Brent crude oil, the benchmark for oil prices, costs $90.66. The last time prices were this high was in the wake of the 7 October attacks and fears of conflict spreading throughout the Middle East.

On the currency front, £1 buys $1.2538 and €1.1678.

How old is the average Briton when they buy their first home, or finish paying their mortgage, or retire?

These are some of the questions answered in a "Journeying Through Life" data dump from the Office for National Statistics.

Here are some of the key takeaways...

Home ownership - including the one life event that's happening earlier

People are buying homes later in life, perhaps unsurprisingly given how house prices have risen in the last decade or so.

In 2022, more than half of people owned their own home (either with a mortgage or outright) by the age of 36.

That's a significant increase on 2004's figures - which showed the average age for home ownership was 32.

This graph shows what proportion of people own homes at what age.

It isn't all doom and gloom on the homes front, however, with the age at which people own their home outright (ie mortgage paid off) dropping from 63 (in 2004) to 61 in 2020.

This is pretty much the only life event happening earlier, however.

Retiring later

Again, this probably won't come as a huge surprise, but people are retiring later.

The age where more than half of people were retired increased from 64 in 2011 to 66 in 2021.

There has been a bigger increase in average retirement age for women (from 61 years in 2011, to 66 years in 2021) than for men (from 65 in 2011 to 66 in 2021).

The ONS says this is because the state pension age for women was increased from 60 to 66 during this time to match men.

Gender pay gap shrinking but still present

The latest data shows that men are still, on the whole, being paid more than women - although the gender pay gap is shown to be shrinking.

For all employees, the gender pay gap was 14% in 2023 - compared with 20% in 2013.

Despite the gap shrinking, this graph shows that men's hourly wages are higher than women's at nearly all ages.

The grey shaded area represents the pay gap.

Another part of the data shows that males start work a touch earlier than women - with half of males in full-time employment by the age of 23 (compared with females at 24) in 2021.

That data could be explained by the fact that more women attend university - some 319,000 females compared with 285,000 males in 2022.

Moving out, marrying and having children

The age at which young people move out of their family homes is increasing, too.

In 2011, half of people were not living with their parents at the age of 21 - compared with 24 in 2022.

More men live with their parents than women, with 61% of adults living at home in 2021 were male.

When it comes to having children, the average age at which women have their first baby has risen to 29.

That's up from an average of just 23 in 1970.

And finally, marriage.

The median age at first marriage has been steadily increasing since the 1960s.

For opposite sex couples married in 2020, the median age was 32 years for men and 30 years for women. For those entering into same-sex marriage, the median age was older, at 36 years for men and 32 years for women.

As well as getting married older, fewer people are getting married. In 2019, marriage rates had fallen to their lowest on record. For men, there were 18.6 marriages per 1,000 never-married men; for women, there were 17.2 marriages per 1,000 never-married women.

Spotify has announced it is hiking its subscription prices by up to £24 a year.

It is the second time in less than a year that the music streaming giant has increased its prices.

Here's how the prices will change...

Individual: £11.99 a month (up from £10.99 a month)

Duo: £16.99 a month (up from £14.99 a month)

Family: £19.99 a month (up from £17.99 a month)

When will the change kick in?

The subscription price will change from May and if you are an existing customer Spotify will email you and give you one-month's notice of the change.

If you are on a free trial you will pay the old price for one month once your trial ends.

A Spotify spokesperson told Sky News: "So that we can keep innovating and delivering value to fans, the music industry, and creators on our platform, we occasionally update our prices.

"We've begun communicating with existing subscribers in the UK to explain what this means for their account."

American burger chain Wendy's will be recruiting for over 400 job roles as part of its expansion across the UK.

The chain returned to the UK in 2021 after a 20-year break and has since opened just over 30 sites, including drive-throughs in Colchester, Peterborough, Derby and Brampton Hut.

But the chain, which was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, plans to open a further nine sites this year in Liverpool, Middlesbrough, and a second location in Sheffield.

New locations will include Liverpool, Middlesbrough and a second site in Sheffield.

Wendy's franchisee GH Burgers will open a first restaurant in Wood Green, London, this year.

There will also be restaurants in Southend-on-Sea, Colchester, Cambridge and Newcastle.

Michael Clarke, UK managing director for the Wendy's Company, told The Caterer : "We've seen great momentum in building Wendy's fandom in the UK, and the love and excitement for this iconic brand grows stronger with each new restaurant opening."
