Tony was fantastic— friendly, so knowledgeable and made me feel like I was out drinking and exploring with a good friend. Travelling solo, meeting people like this make all the difference. He did a great job doing the tour bilingually. Really good stories about both the history of the city and the drinks. 10/10 recommend.

Best things to do and see in Havana

Havana is quite possibly one of the most special tourist destinations in the entire world. The Cuban capital receives thousands of tourists each year who are anxious to travel there to get to know the cuisine, the culture, and the local Cuban history which we are sure you’ll fall in love with. Its streets are a symphony of colors and scents of tropical fruit that will accompany tourists on their walks, while illustrating that its past is a relevant part of the future and is important to remember.

To get to see the real Havana, it’s a great idea to uncover the hidden charms of this city with a local guide on a free walking tour. You can choose from several routes that will take you to discover some of the most iconic spots and interesting landmarks this city has to offer all while you get to immerse yourself in Cuban culture. Some free walking tours will take you by the Plaza de Armas, the National Hotel of Cuba, others allow you to walk along the Malecon or lose yourself in Old Town, and see the Cathedral that has some really unique views under its dome. There is also a Chinatown that is worth seeing, in addition to visiting the Castillo del Morro or the University.

The walkers (tourists on a guru walk) often leave their reviews and opinions about the free walking tours they have done. They evaluate the experience, from the route they chose to the guide and his or her tour and how well everything was explained. You can find other interesting cities with free walking tours lead by local guides on our page like Santiago de Cuba or Cartagena (Colombia).

Havana’s often described as being trapped in a time warp, thanks to the cool retro cars prowling the streets and the crumbling mix of colonial and art deco design. But while we love the vintage vibe of Havana, the city also has so much more to explore in the here and now. Take a Havana city tour that will expose you to Afro-Cuban religion, show you the broken beauty that defines the city’s spectacular, UNESCO-designated architecture, and teach you about what remains today of la Revolución. Then finish it all off, of course, with a mojito in la Habana Vieja.

Culture and customs.

With   Spanish ,   African   , and Creole influences, modern Cuba is home to so many cultural components – some of which don’t feel super ‘modern’ at all!

You won’t be surprised that Cubans love music and dancing – with everything from Afro-Cuban rhythms to classic melodies filling the air in clubs, bars, restaurants, and on street corners. The modern arts are also alive here, with ballet, contemporary dance, and film rising in popularity – so much so, Havana is now home to internationally recognized film, literature, and music festivals.

Living in a Communist country means Cubans sometimes go without the luxury items that many Westerners take for granted, with certain foods and consumer goods not available. Despite this, events like birthdays, holidays, and marriages are celebrated with gusto, with special meals, music, and dance featuring. This love of life is also evident in the street parties, festivals, and fiestas that are celebrated throughout the year. Coffee, cigars, and rum flow freely, and people dance to the sound of trumpets and guitars in city streets.

Life in the cities and life in rural areas can be quite different, but the pace of living is consistently Cuban – you’re on local time now, so go with the flow. Experience Cuban culture on our 8 day Beautiful Cuba trip.

History and government

Ancient history.

Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, Cuba was home to Mesoamerican cultures, including the indigenous Guanajatabey and Taino people. The Guanajatabey were hunter-gatherers and fishers, and Taino communities also harvested yuca, cotton, and tobacco. Spanish colonialist Bartolome de las Casas estimated that Taino populations in Cuba had reached 350,000 by the end of the 15th century.

By then, Christopher Columbus had landed in Cuba and claimed the land for   Spain, naming it Isla Juana. In 1511, Diego Velazquez de Cuellar founded Baracoa, the first Spanish settlement in Cuba, and three years later what’s now known as Havana was built.

20th century

In 1902, after periods under Spanish, British, and United States rule and involvement in the Spanish–American war, Cuba got its independence. Despite the economy booming, leaders at this time ruled through corruption and control. This was until revolutionary Fidel Castro led a 9000-strong guerrilla army into Havana in 1959, forcing military dictator Fulgencio Batista to flee. Castro became the leader and his brother, Raul, his deputy. What followed was an attempt by the United States to overthrow Castro’s communist rule at the Bay of Pigs, and tension and trade embargoes following the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Standing alongside Castro as an equally prominent political figure, Che Guevara (although Argentinean) holds a very important place in Cuban history. A revolutionary, author, doctor, and military leader, Guevara played a pivotal role in the guerrilla campaign leading up to the Cuban Revolution and the defense of the Bay of Pigs, as well as in diplomatic relations, up until his death in 1967. It’s impossible not to notice the reverence for Guevara when visiting Cuba, with street art, statues, and museums dedicated to the man Cubans simply call ‘El Che’ found all over the country.

In April 2011 Fidel Castro was succeeded as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba by his brother Raul Castro. Cuba’s political relationship with other countries, including its close neighbors, is ever-evolving, with the US recently beginning to ease restrictions on trade, tourism, and other industries. But a snapshot of 50 years of isolation remains in the cars, architecture, and culture that is a contemporary Cuban street. Learn about Cuba's fascinating past on our 15 day Best of Cuba adventure.

Eating and drinking

Cuba may not have culinary fame compared to some of its neighbors, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on some great food during your time here. Cuba typically doesn’t have access to a wide range of ingredients, so your dining experience may not be as varied as you’d expect from some other   nearby destinations. Regardless, there are some Central American favorites that are definitely worth trying. Try out the local cuisine on our 8 day Cuba Highlights tour.

What to eat in Cuba

Pastelitos These small pastries can be either sweet or savory. Cream cheese, guava, and beef are the most popular fillings and make for a cheap, tasty meal on the run. Think empanadas, Cuban style.

Cuban sandwich Otherwise known as a mixto, this sandwich is a simple snack that has made its way north into Florida and has become one of the quintessential images of Cuban food beyond its borders. Ham, pork, cheese, mustard, and sometimes salami layered between bread and grilled – what’s not to like?

Ropa vieja Not only is this one of the national dishes of Cuba, but it’s also found all over the Caribbean, in Spain, and even the Philippines! It may literally translate to ‘old clothes’, but that’s definitely not what it tastes like – slow-cooked pulled beef with vegetables, usually served with maduros (fried plantains), black beans, and rice.

Fritura de maiz These deep-fried cheese and cornmeal fritters are popular street food snacks in Cuba. A great choice for vegetarians; throw a couple of these back and you’ll be feeling the Cuban spirit.

Moros y cristianos

Rice and beans is ot just rice and beans. Black beans and white rice are added to a base of peppers, garlic, and onion and simmered with herbs, creating a flavorful addition to any meal and served up at virtually every Cuban restaurant you'll come across.

If you're a little bit peckish and are on the go, seek out some tostones. These twice-fried plantain chips are very popular in a lot of Latin America countries and are an easy (and often cheap) snack.

Although flan is known all around Central and South America as an essential dessert, Cuban flan has a slightly different spin. It's made with evaporated and sweetened condensed milk, giving it a thicker and creamier caramel custard finish than fresh milk varities. Get ready for a seriously delicious sugar high.

Coppelia ice cream Line up with locals to savor a sweet scoop from Coppelia ice cream parlor. This Cuban institution serves tried and true flavors like chocolate and vanilla as well as exotic favorites like mango and coconut.

What to drink in Cuba

Rum The tipple of choice in Cuba is rum, obviously. Savour some Havana Club straight up, have it mixed in a minty mojito, or sip on a Cuba Libre – rum, cola, and lime.

Coffee Cuban coffee is of legendary quality, so be sure to get your caffeine hit with a small but rich cup of liquid gold. Drink it like the locals do, as a cafecito or Cafe Cubano. This type of espresso-style coffee is usually sweetened with raw cane sugar and stirred in with the first drips of espresso to get the best result.

Geography and environment

This island nation sitting in the Caribbean Sea is home to a diverse range of environments: rolling hills to tobacco plantations, beaches, and coral reefs to tropical rainforests. With more than 20% of the island covered with natural parks, there's incredible biodiversity, making it a great place for eco-adventures, hiking, snorkeling, and diving.

Large cities like Havana evoke a time gone by. Grand buildings dating back to the 1950s exude a fading beauty, which makes for great photographs but can also make daily life quite difficult. Due to a lack of building materials, new housing, and infrastructure are rare, making living conditions quite cramped for Cuban city dwellers. Rural life offers more space and a quieter pace, but reduced access to services. Regardless of where you holiday in Cuba, the people are generally kind and hospitable in both the big cities and small towns. Wander the magnificent landscapes, both natural and manmade, on our 8 day One Week in Cuba adventure.

Cuba may not be known for its shopping, but look closely and you’ll find lots of unique souvenirs to take home as a reminder of your holiday. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import some items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws. The United States also has restrictions on the amount of tobacco and alcohol that can be brought back from Cuba.

What to buy

Art Cuba has a keen appreciation of the fine arts, so it’s not hard to find unique artworks by up-and-coming local artists being sold at galleries and markets. It also makes for a meaningful memento of your time away.

Cigars The cliche is unsurprisingly true – cigars are everywhere in Cuba. Be sure to buy cigars from authorized sellers, as fakes are common. Purchasing straight from the factory is usually best.

Coffee Cuban coffee is top quality, so stock up before you leave to enjoy a taste of Cuba in the comfort of your own home. Do check, however, if your country of origin allows plant-based materials to pass through quarantine.

Music With such a rich musical heritage, Cuba is a great place to pick up a hand-crafted instrument or, if traveling light, a CD or a local artist’s info to add to your playlist.

Do some serious souvenir shopping on our 8 day Premium Cuba tour.

Festivals and events

Havana international jazz festival.

Local and international artists head to Havana every January to become a part of the happening jazz scene. From the impressive Teatro Nacional de Cuba to the city streets, the sweet sounds of jazz fill the air of Havana for the duration of the festival.

Habanos Cigar Festival

In February, cigar connoisseurs gather to celebrate their love of the best cigar in the world – the Habano. With tastings, visits to plantations and factories, master classes, and cigar-rolling contests on offer, this festival will intrigue curious travelers and delight cigar enthusiasts.

Santiago de Cuba Carnival

Watch this historic city come alive in July with street parades full of vibrant costumes, drums, and dancing. This epic public celebrations date back to at least the 17th century and are held all around the country, but Santiago de Cuba hosts the biggest, brightest, and most traditional of them all.

Cuba travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Cuba?

Cuba's subtropical climate is ideal for exploration, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow in from the coast, providing pleasant year-round temperatures. June, July and August are usually the hottest months – the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and shouldn't impede travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travelers.

Do I need a visa to travel to Cuba?

Tourists of most nationalities require a 'Tourist Card' which is similar to a tourist visa. These can be obtained through travel agents in your home country, or directly from Cuban embassies and consulates. Depending on the airline you are traveling with to Cuba, you may also be able to purchase the tourist card at the airport from the airline on the day of your departure – please check with your airline for more information.

If you are a US citizen, American permanent resident, or hold any type of American Visa and are considering traveling to Cuba, please refer to the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs website –  travel.state.gov  – for the latest advice.

We recommend traveling to Cuba via Canada, Europe, and South or Central America. Travelers who have been to Cuba are ineligible to participate in the ESTA Visa Wavier Program and must apply for a tourist visa to enter or transit via the United States.

Remember to check the entry requirements for any destinations you will travel or transit through both to and from Cuba.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Cuba?

As most Cubans live modest lifestyles, leaving a tip for good service is a great idea and welcomed.

There is almost always free entertainment in bars and restaurants; the musicians and singers are usually not paid by the venue, so we encourage you to tip when you have enjoyed the performance. Tour leaders, restaurant workers, hotel porters, cleaning staff and taxi drivers will appreciate a small sum – but be sure to tip in Cuban pesos as foreign currency isn’t easily exchanged in Cuba.

It’s important to carry around small denominations of currency to leave tips during your holiday, so you can tip an amount you feel comfortable with.

What is the internet access like in Cuba?

Internet access isn't widespread throughout Cuba, but availability is improving. The internet can sometimes be accessed from government departments and larger hotels, and main squares in many cities now have wi-fi accessibility. You will need to purchase an internet card from certain hotels and outlets to gain access in any location, including in public areas.

Please note that although connectivity is improving, the connection may still be slow, some websites may be censored, and the cost is typically quite high.

Can I use my cell phone while in Cuba?

Your cell phone may or may not work while in Cuba, depending on what type of phone you have. Before leaving your home country, ensure roaming is activated with your provider, but be aware that your phone may not get reception due to Cuba having the lowest cell phone network penetration in Latin America.

If you intend to activate global roaming while in Cuba, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Cuba?

Public toilets are rare in Cuba, but western-style flushable toilets are available in hotels, bars, and restaurants. Bringing your own toilet paper and hand soap or hand sanitizer is recommended as often these are not provided. Due to import restrictions, toilet seats can be considered a luxury and may be missing from some facilities.

What will it cost for a...?

Cuba's unit of currency is the peso (CUP). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Can of soft drink or bottle of water = 1-2 CUP
  • Cup of coffee = 1.50 CUP
  • Cocktail = 2-5 CUP
  • Meal in a nice restaurant = 120+ CUP
  • One hour of wi-fi = 25 CUP

Can I drink the water in Cuba?

It's not advisable to drink water from the tap in Cuba. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available. It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cuba?

Some credit cards are accepted in Cuba (Visa and Mastercard are usually more widely accepted), although some cards linked to US banking institutions won't be accepted. Debit cards (even Visa debit) generally have problems working. We recommend you bring multiple cards from different banks to be sure you have access to funds. Ensure you also have enough cash and other forms of payment, as credit card facilities may not always be available.

What is ATM access like in Cuba?

ATMs are accessible in large cities like Havana and Santiago de Cuba but are rare and almost non-existent in other parts of Cuba. Ensure you have other payment options available in case you cannot access an ATM while traveling.

What is the weather like in Cuba?

Cuba enjoys Caribbean vibes all year round, and sits below the Tropic of Cancer, so you’ll enjoy a tropical climate with north-easterly trade winds that blow year-round.

May to October is usually considered the wet season, with higher maximum temperatures each day (around 90°F) and more sunlight each day, averaging 10 hours. September and October is hurricane season in the region, and this time of year is usually hot and overcast, with a higher chance of rainfall.

November to April is usually the drier season in Cuba, with maximum temperatures sitting around 79°F and an average of 8 hours of sunlight each day. The winter months are clearer, slightly more humid, and more comfortable than summer.

Is Cuba safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Cuba has made some significant steps in recent years to ensure LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. Homosexuality is legal and accepted in Cuba, and there are some anti-discrimination laws in place for employment, service provisions, and gender identity. However, same-sex marriage recognition is still pending, and stigma still remains in some parts of society, especially in rural areas.

The Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) works to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Cuba and hosts rallies to educate and advocate.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Cuba accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As Cuba has not had the same infrastructure development as other countries, you may find some mobility challenges when traveling. Havana’s streets are often crowded, and sidewalks can at times be rugged or even nonexistent. This is the same with other cities and towns around the country. Also, a lot of public transportation isn’t geared toward travelers who use a wheelchair, so private travel may be the only option to get around.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

A one day tour of Havana, Cuba is a fun way to see the highlights of this beautiful city, by classic car and walking tour.

If you are only going to have one day in Havana, we highly recommend taking a Classic Car and Walking Tour. There is so much history, and so many fantastic places we would have missed on our own, if we tried to tour Havana in one day, without a car or a guide.

We went with Strawberry Tours , and took their Havana in a Day – 5 hour private classic car and Old Havana walking tour. We were so happy we booked a tour with them. Our one day itinerary highlights included:

Havana Classic Car Tour (2 hours)

  • El Bosque de la Habana (Havana Forest)
  • Plaza de Revolucion ( Revolution Square)
  • Christ of Havana & City View Across the Bay
  • El Morro Castle
  • Drive through Miramar neighbourhood, old Havana & the Malecon

Walking Tour of Habana Vieja (Old Havana) (3 Hours)

  • Lunch in Old Havana at Mekedé

Catedral de San Cristobal

  • Obispo Street & Streets of Old Havana
  • Snack Time: Churros and Sugar Cane Juice

Cafe Literario – “Cat Cafe”

  • Plaza de San Fransisco

San Jose Artisan Market

This itinerary is a good, one day glimpse into the history and well known sites of Havana.

Note: This is NOT a sponsored post. We just loved our experience so much, we wanted to share it with you.

Havana Tour: One Day Havana Itinerary

Derek was the one to suggest we book a private tour / guide ahead of time. He wanted the grand Havana overview, so we could then come back over the next few days and hit other highlights we missed the first day.

I have to admit, I am not usually one for tours. I was also a bit skeptical of dragging my 6 year old along for the day, not sure how she would do (surprisingly well as it turns out).

Strawberry Tours – Havana had good reviews online so we decided to take a chance. I am so glad we did.

Havana Classic Car Tour – Strawberry Tours

A Vintage Car Tour was our families chance to sit back, relax, and let our hair blow in the wind , as we were temporarily transported back in time in our 1950’s convertible.

Classic Car photos in El Bosque de la Habana

We started off our tour with iconic classic car photos in El Bosque de la Habana (Havana Forest) . This shady urban forest extends for over eight kilometres (5miles) alongside the Almendares River. This is a popular place for locals to picnic, take quinceañera photos, and for Santería ceremonies.

Santería   emerged in Cuba in the late 17th century as a fusion of Catholic and African folk beliefs, and is widely practiced in Cuba today. Be respectful of people practicing along the river, and avoid taking their picture.

One Day Tour - Havana Forest, banyan tree

Plaza de Revolucion (Revolution Square)

Next we headed to Revolution Square, the centre of the Cuban government. Plaza de la Revolución, known as Plaza Cívica until 1959, sits at the centre of a hill with roads spreading out towards the Río Almendares, Vedado and Parque de la Fraternidad.

You will find a great photo opportunity against the backdrop of two well known guerrillero s, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos. There is also a large 109 metre tower, in honour of the Cuban national hero José Martí .

Stand at the centre of the square, close your eyes and imagine standing with a million people, as Fidel delivers one of his notoriously long political speeches.

Havana Classic Car Tour: Christ of Havana & City View Across the Bay

Continuing on, we passed under El Tunel de Habana heading to El Cristo de la Habana (Christ of Havana).

Sitting in a convertible, in an underground tunnel with slow moving traffic, surrounded by diesel fumes, was not my favourite part. Luckily it was soon over. Chalk it up to all part of the Cuban experience.

The Christ of Havana overlooks the bay, standing at over 20 metres (66 feet) tall. This marble marvel is comprised of 320 tonnes of white Carerra marble from Italy, blessed by Pope Pius XII.

Our guide mentioned that locals jokingly say he was sculpted to depict a cigar in the right hand and a mojito in the left hand, to represent Cuban culture.

Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, this is a peaceful spot to take in a panoramic view of the city. See if you can find El Capitolio and the Jose Marti Memorial in the distance.

Cute story, my six year old asked me to take the picture above saying “Mom, it’s a castle just my size.”

Tour of Havana: El Morro Castle

Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro, also known as El Morro, sits at the entrance to the Bay of Havana, in the  Parque Historico Militar .

El Morro was built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries to guard against military and pirate attacks. Children, and adults alike will love visiting this real life fortress.

El Morro is now a museum, and if you have the time, you can visit inside for a small fee. The combination of castle, city and sea, creates a stunning view.

Drive Through Miramar Neighbourhood, Old Havana and the Malecon

While Old Havana is best experienced by foot, the newer parts of Havana such as the Miramar and Vedado neighbourhoods are better by car due to long distances. Touring by convertible was an interesting way to tour through these areas.

Malecon: Havana, Cuba Tour

A visit to Havana is not complete without a walk or drive along the Malecon . The sea front boulevard is an iconic symbol of Havana, which runs seven kilometres (4.3 miles) between Habana Vieja (Old Havana) and Vedado .

This a favourite spot among locals and tourists alike to meet, take a romantic stroll (especially at sunset), and to be inspired by the ocean and the architectural outline of the city. You might even see a local fishing off the wall.

We came back to the Malecon a day later to spend more time meandering along the water, take pictures of pelicans diving for food, and to eat ice cream in the sun. Definitely one of the highlights of Havana for us.

Walking Tour Havana, Cuba – Strawberry Tours

Havana Vieja (Old Havana) is the heart of the city, with its colorful architecture, labyrinth of narrow streets, interconnected plazas and Cuban life in action.

It’s a beautiful contradiction of carefully restored buildings and those in ruin or partly constructed. Add in Cuban music, history, culture, food, art and there is something for everyone.

Old Havana, designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982, is best seen by foot. I’ve highlighted just a few of the many possibilities for a walking tour. Rest assured wherever you go, there will be lots to look at.

Pro Tip: Let your guide know if there are any particular sites you would like to see. A private walking tour allows for more flexibility.

Lunch in Old Havana

Before we got our walking shoes on, we had a nice leisurely lunch at Mekedé, where I had one of my favourite meals of my whole trip. It made our list top places to eat in Havana with kids. Read why it made our list.

The Catedral de San Cristobal built between 1748 and 1777, is an example of baroque style, with a more austere neoclassical interior . Inside you will find a statue of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, Cuba’s patron saint, and a cool, quiet place to rest for a few moments.

Tip: You can access the smaller tower from inside, which you can climb for a small donation. At the time we visited, it was only $1CUC ($1USD equivalent).

By this point we were hot and tired from walking, so we opted for a leisurely stroll inside the Church and a few moments rest. To our credit, when we left our hometown in northern Canada it was -30 degrees Celsius (-22F), so it was a big, but much anticipated adjustment to Caribbean weather.

San Cristobal Cathedral, Old Havana walking tour

Walking Tour, Havana: Obispo Street & Streets of Old Havana

Obispo Street, the longest boulevard in Havana, starts at the Bay, passes through the Plaza de Armas and ends at Montserrat Street .

Obispo is a bustling corridor of shops, art galleries, music venues, and restaurants. You can enjoy everything from sit down establishments, to small hole-in-the-wall places selling street pizza and ice cream.

Along the way, we of course stopped outside the famous La Bodeguita del Medio to listen to the live band performing, and give our nod to Ernest Hemingway. Many people stop in here for a drink.

online tours habana

We also stopped at the Bacardi Building. This Art Deco Havana landmark was built in 1930, as headquarters for the Bacardi Rum Company. At the time it was Cuba’s tallest building.

This building was headquarters for company until 1960, when Castro seized their assets as part of his efforts to nationalize and ban all private property.

Snack Time – Churros and Sugar Cane Juice

You don’t want to miss out on snack time in Old Havana, especially if you have kids. We opted for churros and sugar cane juice from a couple of street stands our guide brought us to.

Our daughter was fascinated by the sugar cane juicing process. She closely watched the vendor turn the wheel of the juicer by hand, sugary liquid dripping into her cup. While I found the drink way too sweet, even with a bit of lemon squeezed in, she proclaimed this was the best drink ever!

To top off snack time we had deep fried, sugary churros filled with chocolate or condensed milk. Need I say more?

Cafe Literario , or the “Cat Cafe’ as our guide and six year old affectionately called it, is a quiet garden oasis and cafe nestled among the hustle and bustle of Old Havana.

This gem had a garden full of wandering cats, apparently fed and taken care of by locals, and a cafe with very inexpensive and delicious coffee. Surprisingly the noise of Havana barely filtered into these walls, so made this cafe perfect for a quiet rest stop.

Walking Tour of Havana: Plaza de San Francisco

Plaza de San Fransisco , in Old Havana takes its name from the convent located there. Wealthy nobles built their homes here in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The plaza now boasts the former Commercial Exchange and Customs house buildings, alongside more modern additions of a hotel, restaurants, and two sculptures.

online tours habana

The Conversation – Plaza de San Fransisco

Look for the sculpture called The Conversation located opposite the convent of Saint Francis de Asís .

The Conversation was donated in 2012 as a gift of friendship between France and Cuba. Interestingly there is a box of French and Cuban coins inside the marble base, symbolizing this friendship and a message for future generations.

Monument of the Street Person – Plaza de San Fransisco

Monument of the Street Person is in honor of the well known Havana character José María López Lledín. He was a local celebrity in the 1950’s and 60’s, who was known for his kindness and wandering the streets of Havana, Cuba.

The story goes that if you touch his finger and beard at the same time, you will have good luck. As we are not one to miss out on a bit o’ luck, we took part in this local legend.

If you are looking for a kid and adult friendly place to eat in Havana, check out Where to eat in Havana with kids .

We ended our day at the San Jose Artisan Market. If you want Cuban handicrafts and art, this is the place to go. Don’t miss the art centre upstairs . We found many unique pieces that weren’t the typical tourist sort.

Strawberry Tours Havana – Havana in a Day Tour Final Thoughts

Strawberry Tours – Havana were helpful from start to finish . I had some questions before booking that were quickly answered by email, and they gave me spot on advice on the right length and type of tour for our family of three, with one six year old.

Our guide Judith was amazing. She went out of her way to make sure we were engaged, happy and had a day we all enjoyed.

Judith happily answered our many questions, giving us insight not only into Cuban history but also into Cuban life as it is today. She guided the day based on our needs and interests, seamlessly including activities our six year old would enjoy, interspersed with historical sites and stops for snacks and lunch.

Strawberry Tours Havana also offer a variety of free food, historical, and nightlife tours, where the guides get paid in tips. These aren’t private, so won’t be as customizable, but are perfect for travellers on a budget.

Based on our experience, we would not hesitate to book again with Strawberry Tours – Havana. You can read more reviews to get a feel for what the different tours are like.

You definitely need more than one day to see all Havana offers. A day tour gives a brief glimpse into this city’s beauty, history, art and culture. We were able to spend four days in Havana, and I have already made an extensive list of things we want to do, when we are lucky enough to return.

What Clients Say About Our Tours

star rating

We arranged to have a surprise birthday trip during our stay in Cuba and we went out in a fabulous Pontiac 1957. We organised this trip from the UK before we left.

Jordan our tour guide and Julio the driver (Vin Diesel lookalike) have taken us to an unforgettable trip to Havana from Varadero. They were both very friendly and helpful.

Was a fun day, I believe the the car was a 1967 Chevy. The driver and guide were great. They both represented the Cuban culture and shared the history of all the places we visited.

We did a tour from Varadero to Havana and had a great day. Although our driver did not speak English, he was very friendly and our guide was a great translator between us.

The owners of 14 historic flat top cottages in Southern Shores are opening their doors Saturday for a self-guided tour that will again benefit the Outer Banks Community Foundation Flat Top Preservation Fund.

The tour features cottages built in the style of Frank Stick during the mid-century — only approximately 25 remain as flat tops. Tickets are $10 and available online at southernshoreshistoricflattops.ticketleap.com or in person at the tour’s table at Southern Shores Crossing at 1 Ocean Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In 2016, the Town of Southern Shores established a local Historic Landmark program to bring awareness to the historical significance of properties. All five of the flat tops designated as Southern Shores Historic Landmarks will be on the tour, including Sokol/Clements Cottage at 23 Porpoise Run; Seaquel at 142 Ocean Blvd; the Clarke/Gudas Cottage at 156 Wax Myrtle Trail; Edith Pipkin’s “Pink Perfection” at 170 Ocean Blvd. and the Mackey Cottage at 218 Ocean Blvd.

The flat top owned by the town of Southern Shores at 13 Skyline Road will also be open for the tourgoers.

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

Tommy Fleetwood, Oscar Craig, Challenge Tour

Tommy Fleetwood was on dad duty for his stepson Oscar Craig this week in his first Challenge Tour start.

The 7-time DP World Tour winner was Craig’s caddie for his debut as he helped lead the youngster to a 2-under through 36 holes.

Playing as an amateur, Craig fired off a 3-under 69 on Thursday and a 1-over 73 on Friday to make the cut in his debut.

Craig finished bogey-free on Day 1 with birdies at Nos. 4, 8 and 18.

Friday’s round proved tougher for the youngster, but he tallied three birdies to go with four bogeys.

The 17-year-old was the only amateur to make the weekend at the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Fleetwood boasted about his stepson on social media after their round.

“Oscar you earned your way into your first Challenge Tour event with your hard work and talent! So proud to witness you make the cut against this quality field. Golf is great,” Fleetwood wrote.

The Englishman commented on a video the Challenge Tour posted with both having smiles across their faces. He pulled him into a giant hug and couldn’t stop smiling while they walked off the green.

They celebrated with family and friends. His mom, Claire Fleetwood, was also there to embrace him.

Fleetwood knows all about the Challenge Tour. At 20 years old, he was the youngest player to finish atop the rankings in 2011 after he won the Kazakhstan Open.

He went on to win his first DP World Tour event, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, in 2013.

Fleetwood's caddie duties will continue for the next two days as Craig secured his spot for the weekend. While he will not take home any money, playing all four days in a professional golf event is quite the feat.
