Penn College Johnson Controls scholars tour facility

Six Pennsylvania College of Technology students were invited recently to tour Johnson Controls Airside Center of Excellence in York.

The students are recipients of scholarships from Johnson Controls Inc., made possible through a $100,000 gift to the college’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning academic program for 2023-24. The majority of the grant, part of Johnson Controls’ Community College Partnership Program, was used for student scholarships, while the remaining funds were earmarked for the purchase of equipment and student participation in professional development opportunities, like the one provided by the company’s Airside Center of Excellence.

The manufacturing, training and support center includes a 285,000-square-foot manufacturing area.

“The tour provided Johnson Controls scholars insight on the process of building standard and custom commercial air handling systems,” explained Jason W. Killinger, associate professor of HVAC technology. “Before entering the fabrication facility, scholars were provided with a presentation that showcased trending technologies JCI uses to help curb energy consumption, predictive maintenance, and equipment replacement by coupling data-driven analytics from existing buildings to help end users reduce their carbon footprint.”

Penn College Johnson Controls scholars making the visit were Gabriel N. Bloom, of Reynoldsville, and Christopher B. Delo Jr., of Milford, both pursuing associate degrees in heating, ventilation & air conditioning technology; as well as Marc S. Balsan, of Dresher; Daniel A. Clifton, of New York, New York; Ian T. Mwaura, of Swatara; and Fabien D. Saintelus, of Stroudsburg, all pursuing bachelor’s degrees in heating, ventilation & air conditioning engineering technology.

“While Johnson Controls has had a nice presence on Penn College’s campus over the years during Career Fairs and classroom visits, it’s equally important to us as a company that students be able to visit our facilities, as well,” said Joe Emrich, market general manager – Central PA for Johnson Controls. “Touring students through a site not only offers industry exposure and the chance to see their labs come to life, it also gives them an idea of what it might be like to come work for Johnson Controls after graduation.”  

Penn College is one of 10 grantees in the 2023-24 cohort of Johnson Controls’ $15 million Community College Partnership Program. All of the recipient colleges were recommended by Johnson Controls employees and are in communities where the corporation has a presence.

The company, a Penn College Corporate Tomorrow Maker , is recognized as a member of the Visionary Society on the college’s Donor Wall ($100,000 to $499,999).

Introduction: Pre-emptive inhaled antibiotics may be effective to reduce the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia among critically ill patients. Meta-analysis of small sample size trials showed a favourable signal. Inhaled antibiotics are associated with a reduced emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the benefit of a 3-day course of inhaled antibiotics among patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation for more than 3 days on the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Methods and analysis: Academic, investigator-initiated, parallel two group arms, double-blind, multicentre superiority randomised controlled trial. Patients invasively ventilated more than 3 days will be randomised to receive 20 mg/kg inhaled amikacin daily for 3 days or inhaled placebo (0.9% Sodium Chloride). Occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia will be recorded based on a standardised diagnostic framework from randomisation to day 28 and adjudicated by a centralised blinded committee.

Ethics and dissemination: The protocol and amendments have been approved by the regional ethics review board and French competent authorities (Comité de protection des personnes Ouest I, No.2016-R29). All patients will be included after informed consent according to French law. Results will be disseminated in international scientific journals.

The trip was well-organized and Briannna was very efficient and helpful throughout. However, her presentations are very brief and clipped, almost to the point where they sound robotic. She needs to keep in mind that while she has said it all many times before, this is the first time the listener has heard it.

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

This was a very well organised 7 day trip to see all the canyons and our guide Adriann was fantastic at accommodating to all our needs. We were a small group of 8 ranging from solo travellers to families such as ourselves and got along very well throughout the 7 days. Although I was not able to see the arches for personal reasons, our guide Adriann was very understanding and made sure the rest of our trip was still amazing. I particularly found Bryce Canyon and Antelope Canyon the most exciting places to visit and the Grand Canyon for my mother which had been number one on her bucket list places to visit. I would definitely recommend this tour and would be keen to go on it again or even on other excursions that they offer!

We really enjoyed the tour! Our tour guide, Lorenzo, was informative and entertaining. Only real difficulty was finding the bus departure point in the Luxor. If your looking for it - head into the Luxor from the lobby and stay to the right... Follow signs for the business center... Look for stairs that lead down to the sub-level. The doors at the bottom of the stairs are the North entrance. All the sites we saw on this trip were amazing. You'll see a great variety of landscapes and environments as you cross Arizona Utah and Nevada deserts. You cover a lot of miles but it's well worth it. We would travel with this company again. Eric

Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

In general things went very well. However, At the Denali location there was a shortage of staff which prevented full service at the Park, Ie. not all dinning venues were normal and our room service such as daily service was missing. We were told, staff shortage due to Canadian employees may have left due to concern of border being closed into Canada. Hotel dysfunction on a limited basis due to that concern. On our last day at the Anchorage Hilton room service was missing also. Not sure why. Most other activities were well supplied/performed. We were pleased.with our Tour Director Tyler, Bus Driver Les and Health coordinator Carol., Some other venues were a bit restricted due to COVID-19 concerns which appear to be out of control of Tourradar. We loved Valdez,, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kanai Fjords National Park, as well as the Athabascan Village and flat boat ride and other amenities such as the Husky Dog Farm. Overall pleased, except as noted above. The weather cooperated 100%.

Jour 1 | montréal - san diego.

Rencontre avec notre accompagnateur de l’équipe Traditours à l’aéroport de Montréal. Assistance aux formalités d’enregistrement et envol vers San Diego, aux États-Unis . Arrivée et accueil par notre guide national francophone. Transfert et installation à l’hôtel. Nuit à San Diego.

Jour 2 | San Diego - Laguna Beach - Santa Monica - Venice Beach - Los Angeles

Déjeuner. Départ pour le tour de ville de San Diego, berceau historique de la Californie, découverte par l’explorateur portugais Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, dont la culture a marqué le début de son histoire. Nous verrons, entre autres, le quartier piétonnier Old Town, l’immense et magnifique parc urbain Balboa, le centre-ville moderne et la baie de San Diego. Nous traverserons celle-ci en empruntant le pont Coronado, un ouvrage colossal d'une hauteur impressionnante de près de 60 m, pour rejoindre la presqu’île de Coronado. Dîner. Sur notre route vers Los Angeles, nous découvrirons Laguna Beach, réputé quartier des œuvres d'art. Nous longerons la côte jusqu'à la métropole, ce qui nous permettra d'admirer des paysages d'une grande beauté et des maisons luxueuses. Continuation et découverte des plages réputées de Santa Monica et Venice. Souper. Installation à l’hôtel et nuit à Los Angeles.

Jour 3 | Beverly Hills - Hollywood (Universal Studios) - Los Angeles

Déjeuner. Visite de la plus grande ville de la côte ouest des États- Unis : Los Angeles. Elle est l’exemple classique des métropoles américaines avec, cependant, son extravagance et son monde d'illusions. Nous découvrirons son centre-ville, Beverly Hills, le quartier des milliardaires. Puis, nous déambulerons sur sa célèbre rue Rodeo Drive et passerons sur Sunset Boulevard pour y voir ses affiches lumineuses à la gloire de l'industrie du disque et du cinéma. Enfin, nous marcherons sur Hollywood Boulevard, avec le Walk of Fame , promenade des célébrités, qui déroule son tapis d'étoiles roses avec le nom des stars inscrit en lettres dorées. Nous verrons le théâtre chinois, reconnu internationalement pour ses empreintes de mains et de pieds dans le ciment. Cet après-midi, nous aurons la chance de vivre au cœur du septième art en allant visiter les plus grands studios de cinéma d'Hollywood : Universal Studios. Dîner sur le site. Toutes les attractions étant incluses, nous pourrons, selon nos goûts, vivre différents effets spéciaux. Les nouvelles technologies virtuelles nous procureront des sensations indescriptibles. Nous verrons également des comédiens reproduire des scènes marquantes de films à grands succès. Souper. Nuit à Los Angeles.

• Visite de Los Angeles, incluant Beverly Hills
• Balade sur Sunset Boulevard et Hollywood Boulevard
• Visite d'Universal Studios 
• Les reproductions d'effets spéciaux et de scènes marquantes du cinéma

Jour 4 | Calico - Laughlin

Déjeuner. Route en direction de Laughlin et traversée du désert de Mojave. Dîner. Visite de la ville fantôme de Calico, étape typique du Far West. Née en 1881 avec l’arrivée massive des prospecteurs d’argent, avant la ruée vers l’or, la ville comptait plus de 3 500 habitants pour 22 saloons et 500 mines d’argent. Dix ans plus tard, le cours de l’argent s’effondra et la ville se vida littéralement de ses habitants pour devenir une véritable ville fantôme en 1907. En chemin, nous ferons un arrêt au Bagdad Café, situé en plein désert, à l’encolure de la Route 66, lieu de tournage du film culte du même nom. Poursuite et arrivée à Laughlin, le « Petit Las Vegas ». Laughlin étincelle de tous ses feux et nous permettra une première initiation aux salles de jeux. Ce sera aussi l’occasion de profiter d’une belle promenade aux abords du fleuve Colorado. Installation à l’hôtel et souper buffet. Nuit à Laughlin.

• Traversée du désert de Mojave
• Visite de la ville fantôme de Calico, étape typique du Far West
• Arrêt au Bagdad Café sur la Route 66
• Promenade aux abords du fleuve Colorado

Jour 5 | Grand Canyon - Cameron

Déjeuner et départ en direction du Grand Canyon, via la forêt nationale de Kaibab. Des paysages spectaculaires défileront devant nous. La route nous amènera bientôt là où il aura fallu plus de 16 millions d'années à un fleuve tumultueux, nommé Colorado, pour creuser son lit : le Grand Canyon, un lieu fascinant! À chaque minute de la journée, la lumière change les couleurs et les formes de ce spectacle grandiose! Survol (en option) de cette incroyable gorge. Dîner. Une marche aux abords du canyon ainsi que différents points d’observation nous permettront également d’admirer ce magnifique décor. Continuation vers Cameron. Installation à l’hôtel. Souper. Nuit à Cameron.

• Les paysages de la forêt nationale de Kaibab
• Le Grand Canyon
• Promenade aux abords du Grand Canyon pour admirer ses différents points de vue

Jour 6 | Monument Valley - Horseshoe Bend - Page

Déjeuner. Départ pour Monument Valley, site protégé et administré par les Navajos. En chemin, nous ferons un arrêt pour rentrer à l'intérieur d'un hogan navajo, petite maison typique octogonale faite de bois et de terre. Nous visiterons Monument Valley à bord de véhicules 4 x 4 pour une excursion à travers de magnifiques mesas et collines, immortalisées par de nombreux westerns, se fondant dans les paysages les plus fabuleux de l'Amérique du Nord. Dîner traditionnel, servi par les Navajos, dans un décor mythique, au pied de pitons de pierre hauts de plus de 300 m. Départ vers le Horseshoe Bend pour voir la magnifique courbe du « fer à cheval » qui se trouve en aval du barrage de Glen Canyon et du lac Powell. Continuation vers Page, ville créée suite à la construction du barrage. Installation à l’hôtel. Souper avec ambiance country. Nuit à Page.

• Arrêt dans un hogan navajo
• Visite de Monument Valley à bord de véhicules 4 x 4
• Dîner traditionnel servi par les Navajos
• La magnifique courbe du « fer à cheval » de Horseshoe Bend

Jour 7 | Antelope Canyon - Lac Powell - Page

Déjeuner. En matinée, survol (en option) du deuxième plus grand lac artificiel des États-Unis, le superbe lac Powell. Départ pour une excursion au Antelope Canyon, l’un des plus beaux bijoux de l’Arizona. La particularité de celui-ci est que, lorsque nous y pénétrons, ses parois, d’un orange éclatant, s’illuminent sous l’effet des rayons du soleil et rendent l’endroit complètement féérique. Dîner. Arrêt panoramique au lac Powell où nous découvrirons les eaux turquoise de cet immense lac artificiel, baignant dans des sables ocres et blancs, entre des falaises de grès gris et rouge. Retour à l’hôtel. Souper. Nuit à Page.

• Excursion au Antelope Canyon
• Arrêt au lac Powell

Jour 8 | Bryce Canyon

Déjeuner. Route en direction de Bryce Canyon. Arrivée et dîner. Visite du parc national de Bryce Canyon, considéré comme l'un des plus beaux parcs naturels américains. Un coup de cœur garanti! Nous serons étonnés par cette série d’amphithéâtres remplis de pointes et de pinacles, de clochers et de flèches, de falaises et de crevasses et de formations étranges appelées « hoodoos ». Une légende raconte que ces derniers sont en fait les représentants d’un peuple ancien transformés en pierre. Ici, la nature a réalisé un pur chef-d'œuvre! Des arrêts panoramiques nous permettront de marcher sur les hauts flancs du canyon offrant des vues à couper le souffle! Installation à l’hôtel. Souper. Nuit dans la région de Bryce Canyon.

• Visite du parc national de Bryce Canyon
• Arrêts panoramiques pour admirer les « hoodoos »
• Marche sur les hauts flancs du canyon

Jour 9 | Parc national de Zion - Las Vegas

Déjeuner. Aujourd’hui, nous traverserons le parc national de Zion, nom donné par les Mormons signifiant « cité céleste de Dieu ». Ce parc abrite un canyon aux couleurs vives creusé par la rivière Virgin. Les roches blanches, roses, rouges du parc naturel sont si vertigineuses et étonnantes que bien peu de photos rendent justice à la splendeur des canyons, déserts ou rivières du parc. Une route si belle qu'on ne voudrait jamais en voir la fin! Dîner. Départ en direction de Las Vegas et installation à notre hôtel situé sur le Strip. Temps libre pour aller tenter sa chance dans l’un des fameux casinos ouverts 24h/24h ou profiter des installations. Souper à l’hôtel. Notre soirée sera consacrée à la découverte de l'extravagance de Las Vegas, capitale du jeu. Nous aurons l'occasion durant cette visite haute en lumière de voir les plus grands spectacles offerts à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur des hôtels les plus prestigieux du vieux Las Vegas et du boulevard le Strip. Nuit à Las Vegas.

• Les couleurs vives des canyons creusés par la rivière Virgin
• Découverte de Las Vegas

Jour 10 | Red Rock Canyon - Las Vegas

Déjeuner. Départ pour la découverte de Red Rock Canyon, un superbe canyon aux couleurs flamboyantes et aux dunes pétrifiées polychromes : une beauté sauvage et naturelle vieille de 65 millions d'années. Retour dans la ville aux mille extravagances pour le dîner et temps libre afin de profiter de Las Vegas à notre guise. Souper à l’hôtel et soirée libre ou accompagnée afin de vivre la magie de Las Vegas de nuit. Nous y retrouverons de nombreux choix de spectacles, d'animations et d'attractions avec entrées libres dans les casinos et les hôtels, dont le nôtre. Nuit à Las Vegas.

• Découverte de Red Rock Canyon

Jour 11 | Death Valley - Bakersfield

Déjeuner. Départ en direction du plus grand parc national des États-Unis : Death Valley ou vallée de la Mort. Ce parc détient le record de la température la plus élevée au monde avec 56,7°C, ainsi que le record du point le plus bas sous le niveau de la mer (-86 m) des États-Unis. Ses paysages lunaires et mystiques nous entraîneront, entre autres, jusqu'à Zabriskie Point, offrant une vue extraordinaire sur des montagnes de sable. Dîner. Nous quitterons ce désert caniculaire pour rejoindre Bakersfield, située au cœur de la vallée agricole de Californie. Arrivée et installation à l’hôtel. Souper. Nuit à Bakersfield.

• Traversée de Death Valley
• Arrêt à Zabriskie Point pour la vue sur les montagnes de sable

Jour 12 | Parc national de Sequoia - Région de Merced

Déjeuner. Départ pour la visite du parc national de Sequoia qui fut, en 1890, le premier parc national créé en Californie. Comme son nom l’indique, il est reconnu pour son importante concentration de séquoias géants. Dîner en cours de route. Poursuite en direction de Merced. Arrivée et installation à l’hôtel. Souper et nuit dans la région de Merced.

• Visite du parc national de Sequoia

Jour 13 | Monterey - Carmel-by-the-Sea - Salinas

Déjeuner. Départ pour la découverte de la péninsule de Monterey qui s’avance avec magnificence dans l’océan Pacifique et allie avec beauté paysages côtiers spectaculaires et riche histoire. Dîner. Visite du musée de Pacific Grove pour en apprendre davantage sur l’histoire naturelle de la région. Tour de Monterey, ancienne capitale espagnole et mexicaine, avec son héritage de constructions datant du 18e siècle. Nous découvrirons, entre autres, son quai historique Fisherman’s Wharf et la fameuse Cannery Row , rue de la Sardine, immortalisée dans le roman de John Steinbeck. Ensuite, nous rejoindrons Carmel-by-the-Sea par la route panoramique 17-Mile Drive qui serpente à travers Pacific Grove et les luxueuses villas de Pebble Beach, domaine privé où s’étale toute l’opulence de la péninsule. Arrivée à Carmel-by-the-Sea, qualifiée de plus beau point de rencontre entre la terre et la mer. Ancien maire, Clint Eastwood en est aujourd’hui le résident le plus célèbre. Découverte de la ville. Route vers Salinas. Installation à l’hôtel. Souper et nuit à Salinas.

• Les beautés de la péninsule de Monterey

Jour 14 | San Francisco

Déjeuner. Départ pour une visite guidée de la ville de San Francisco, comblée par la géographie et l’histoire. Nous verrons, entre autres, Market Street, Union Square, Nob Hill et la descente des voitures sur la célèbre Lombard Street qui passe pour la rue la plus tortueuse du monde. Dîner dans Chinatown, quartier le plus pittoresque, où les rues escaladent les collines et plongent vers la mer, multipliant les points de vue spectaculaires. Nous en profiterons pour y faire un tour d’orientation. Temps libre pour parcourir la ville et retour à l’hôtel. Souper dans un restaurant avec orchestre jazz. Nuit à San Francisco.

Jour 15 | San Francisco

Déjeuner. Départ pour une visite du Golden Gate Park, le plus grand parc de San Francisco ainsi que le 3 e plus grand des États-Unis, et de son magnifique jardin de thé japonais. Nous pourrons y relaxer entourés des pagodes, des bonsaïs et des bassins d’eau. Ensuite, nous emprunterons le Golden Gate Bridge, l’un des plus célèbres ponts au monde, afin de nous rendre à Sausalito. Aujourd’hui habitée par des artistes, cet ancien port de pêche a gardé tout son charme. Dîner. Après le repas, nous traverserons, en bateau, la célèbre baie de San Francisco nous permettant de voir l’île d’Alcatraz et sa prison ainsi que le Golden Gate Bridge. Nous accosterons au Fisherman’s Wharf et profiterons de la ville à notre guise. Excursion typique en cable cars . Souper d’au revoir et nuit à San Francisco.

Jour 16 | San Francisco - Montréal

Déjeuner à l’hôtel. Transfert à l’aéroport de San Francisco selon l’horaire du vol. Assistance aux formalités d’enregistrement et vol de retour vers Montréal. Arrivée à Montréal.
