– From Things to Do and Eat
Kalui is a must visit restaurant when you’re in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. One of the top recommendations when talking to both tourists and locals alike, their focus is family style seafood and Filipino dishes .
When you walk in, you have to take off your shoes so it feels like you’re entering someone’s home for a special meal. The decor is beautiful, with lots of art pieces, and there are even paintings for sale!
You get free ginger seafood stock soup and a unique type of seaweed called lato to start, and fresh fruits in a coconut for dessert– at least when we went. Then basically everything we actually ordered was amazing! My personal favorite dish was their seafood pinakbet. The vegetables were so fresh and the squid was perfectly cooked and tender!
If you’re staying in Puerto Princesa City and looking for a place to eat, don’t miss out on visiting the baywalk park. It’s lined with several restaurants offering affordable Filipino food and even fresh seafood!
For the seafood, you can choose from the displays in front of the restaurants to be cooked or order one of the group meals. We ordered a bilao good for 6-8 people and only paid about P1200!
Aside from the restaurants, you can also stroll by the souvenir shops in the area.
At 8.2 km in length, the Puerto Princesa Underground River in Puerto Princesa City is one of the longest underground rivers in the world. It is part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park, which is a a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of the World.
You can explore the initial 1.5 kilometers via a paddle boat tour. The tour takes about 45 minutes. You’ll be given a lifevest and cap for protection, as well as an audio guide to listen to during the tour. Once inside, your guide/boatman will also point out interesting rock formations and wildlife inside using a torchlight. The underground river has retained its natural ambiance so you can appreciate the stalacties, stalagmites and small waterfalls inside the cave.
To get here, you’ll need to go to Sabang and ride a motorized boat for 15-20 minutes or take a jungle trail for 1 hour . If you’re joining a packaged tour, the boat arrangement is already taken cared of.
Your visit in Palawan won’t be complete without island hopping in El Nido. This is considered the premiere tourist attraction in Palawan and even though it’s visited by thousands of tourists every year, it still remains a beauty to behold.
There are different island hopping tours available in El Nido. The most recommended ones are tours A and C. These will take you to the Small Lagoon and Big Lagoon, which features crystal-clear emerald water surrounded by towering karst rings; Matinloc Shrine, which is a great snorkeling spot; and Secret Beach, which is accessible only thru a small opening.
– From Walk my World
Whilst a lot of tourists in Palawan focus on the island hopping tours, there are several stunning beaches which the boat trips overlook that are really close to El Nido and almost entirely empty . Many hotels will hire out kayaks for the day and with a bit of work, you can find a white sand beach with beautiful turquoise water all to yourself! We highly recommend paddling to Lapus Lapus and Ipil Beach to take in these wild beaches without the crowds.
The other benefit of a kayak is that you can also visit some of the really popular beaches like Papaya and Seven Commandos after the tour groups leave for the day. If you arrive after 4pm, it’s very likely that these famous beaches will have very few, if any people on them, allowing you to take in the sunset at one of the most beautiful places in Palawan all to yourself.
If you’re exhausted from days of island hopping and want to take the afternoon off, you can visit and relax at Nacpan Beach. Nacpan Beach is located about 45 minutes from El Nido town proper. The beach in itself is calm and beautiful.
Here you can relax or beach bum, hike to see an overlooking view of the Twin Beaches and eat seafood at nearby restaurants.
There are also resorts in Nacpan Beach where you can choose to stay overnight.
– From Pinoy Adventurista
Aside from exploring El Nido’s stunning and world-class beaches, islands and towering limestone rock formations, another must-do activity when in El Nido is climbing Taraw Cliff . It’s one of the best spots to see El Nido from above.
This limestone cliff is located right in the heart of downtown El Nido and offers sweeping and panoramic views of Bacuit Bay the of El Nido town.
The best and safest way to get to the viewing deck of Taraw Cliff is through the El Nido Canopy Walk. Although climbing it wasn’t easy, our tour guide made us feel safe and secured by guiding us all the way to the top. The amazing view made me forget the long walk up the stairs just to see this famed view of El Nido. And I don’t regret it. Given the chance, I will climb this again on my next visit to El Nido.
Don’t miss it when traveling to El Nido, Palawan! You will surely enjoy it!
Kayangan Lake is perhaps the most popular tourist attraction in Coron, Palawan . With its turqouise water, it’s also dubbed as the cleanest water in Asia.
To get here, you will need to rent a boat or join an island hopping tour. You’ll climb a set of stairs which will then take you to the famous viewpoint of the Coron Bay. Climb down to the other side and you’ll see the lake. You can swim or snorkel/freedive to see fishes or stalagmites underneath.
Maquinit hot spring is a saltwater hot spring that can be found in Busuanga. It’s about 30 minutes away from Coron town proper.
The water in the hot spring comes from a volcano located underground, which is then collected into 3 circular pools. Here tourists can soak themselves for a therapeutic and relaxing dip. The temperature in the hot spring hovers around 40 degree Celcius, which makes it a perfect day-ender after a day of island hopping or trekking Mount Tapyas.
Maquinit hot spring is open daily from 8AM to 10PM.
– From Whisper Wanderlust
One of my favorite activities in Palawan is to admire the sunset on Mount Tapyas in Coron.
To reach the observation site, you must climb 700 steps. Even if it is quite exhausting, it definitely deserves the effort. In the end, you will be rewarded with an absolutely delightful view. From there, not only will you be able to admire the glorious sunset but also the surrounding landscapes, along with a few islands, including Coron Island. It is a popular place and you will see that many tourists sit on the grass while waiting for the sun to hide behind the hills.
I recommend you to get there at least half an hour before and bring water and some snacks.
– From Dreamers Who Wander
Off the coast of El Nido, Coron is an amazing island full of beauty and secluded white sand beaches. But what makes Coron special and definitely worth a visit?
The answer is simple: this tiny gem in Palawan has been described as one of the best places in the world for wreck diving! In 1944, more than 20 Japanese ships were sunk by a devastating American air raid. Even if only 12 vessels had been discovered up to now, they are all well preserved and at a perfect depth for recreational diving.
Penetrating a sunken ship is an incredibly powerful experience that every passionate and advanced diver would surely appreciate. The fish and sea creatures that now inhabit this extraordinary piece of our history make the experience of wreck diving in Coron truly unforgettable.
– From Wandering Wagars
San Vicente is a destination that is often overshadowed by many of the more popular destinations in Palawan. In fact, San Vicente is one of the true hidden gems in the Philippines. This idyllic destination has unspoiled beaches, picture-perfect islands, rich marine life, and the chilled out, relaxed vibe that that only seems to occur at the best beach destinations.
San Vicente is often touted as being the next Boracay , although I hope that never happens. Boracay , as beautiful as it is, has become overrun by tourists and businesses. San Vicente is what Boracay was 20 years ago. In San Vicente you can visit Long Beach is the longest stretch of beach in the Philippines. There are also beautiful waterfalls and quiet coastal fishing villages.
For an even more intimate experience head to the suburb of Port Barton . Here you can take boat tours to sandy islands, turtle sanctuaries, rich coral reefs and so much more.
Balabac is an up-and-coming destination in Palawan . It’s composed of 31 islands and several of these can be visited during island hopping.
Here in Balabac you’ll be able to see pristine islands. Most notable are Onuk Island — a private island surrounded by jaw-dropping blue water; Bugsuk Island, which features the finest sand in the area; Candaraman Island, which has a sandbar filled with starfishes; Mansalangan sandbar, a picture-perfect sandbar; Patawan Island and more.
These islands can be visited in 2-3 days.
The Philippines has a lot of amazing beaches all throughout its regions, but nothing compares to Onuk Island. This private island can be found in the municipality of Balabac, in the southern part of Palawan.
Onuk Island is an elongated-shaped island enclosed by a reef called Roughton Reef. The island itself has crystal-clear beach and a snorkeling area where you can see fishes, giant clams and even sea turtles. Currently, there are limited rooms in the islands and cottages where you can put up a hammock to relax.
During low tide, you can enjoy swimming in the beach below. During high tide, the water rises just below the stilt pathway so you can jump directly to the water if you wish to do so.
Onuk Island can be visited by boat. It’s often included in island hopping tours in Balabac .

One of the most fascinating things we did in Palawan was visiting a pearl farm during our visit to Flower Island.
Flower Island is a small privately-owned island around 1-hour boat ride from Taytay. It is owned by the large pearl farm that owns most of the marine space in this part of Palawan.
As part of our stay at Flower Island, we visited the Pearl Farm.
The process of harvesting pearls is very complex, involving a lot of different stages, which are explained at the farm.
However, the thing that struck us the most from our visit is how stringent and intense the security is! You cannot just turn up at the farm – visits are strictly by appointment, arranged in advance. On arrival, guards meet to inspect you and follow you throughout your tour. The reason is because of the large number of pirate attacks that have happened in the past due to the high value of the pearls!
There are already island hopping tours available in El Nido or Coron, so what makes Port Barton different? It’s relatively less crowded so it’s perfect for those who want a quieter time or looking for a new destination to explore in Palawan.
There are different island hopping tours available in Port Barton , but if you’re in a group and renting a boat for exclusive tour, you can customize your itinerary so you can see the best stops in a day. You can snorkel in the Twin Reef or Wide Reef, chase sea turtles in German Island or otherwise relax in swim in beautiful beaches.
Dumaran is one of the low-key destinations in Palawan. It can be visited as a day tour from Puerto Princesa City, although it’s better to spend at least 3 days here to explore the islands.
Dumaran offers several kilometers of coral reef area where you can see various types of corals and fishes. The most popular boat stops include Renambakan Island and Encantasia Island. There are also other islands you can see in Dumaran if you simply want to explore beaches.
Linapacan nabbed its place in the tourist map after an online magazine named it one of the clearest waters in the world.
It can be visited via ferry from either Coron or El Nido. Tourism in Linapacan is not yet established; as such, there are no standard island hopping tours here yet. You will need to rent a private boat to visit Linapacan and its neighboring islands, where you can enjoy frolicking in pristine beaches, snorkel and dive.
Culion Island is one of the major islands in the Calamian Group. It can be visited as a day tour from Coron.
Culion has an interesting history. Several decades ago, it was once a leper colony although it later be declared as a disease-free community. A historical tour in Culion will take you to several landmarks including historical sites as a leper colony, Culion Museum, Culion Church and Bogor Marine Park.
The Tubbataha Reef is one of the best places to dive in the Philippines. In fact, it was listed by CNN as the top 8th best dive site in the world . The only way to visit here is via liveaboard which allows you to a couple day’s exploration.
Tubbataha Reef features high marine life diversity. Expect to see various species of corals, fishes and other animals such as sharks, turtles and manta rays.
Dive season in Tubbataha Reef is from mid-March to mid-June.
If you enjoy challenges, you shouldn’t miss trekking Mount Mantalingajan. It’s considered the highest point in Palawan.
During the trek, you will encounter different landscapes including grassland, mossy forest and jagged rock platforms. It’s also a cultural activity. Interestingly, Mount Mantalingajan was once home to the extinct tribe of Tau’t Daram (also called the “People of the Night”), which is believed to be a mystical tribe who lives in houses above the forest canopy. Today, another tribe continues to live in the mountain — the Tau’t Bato (also called “People of the Stone”). You will encounter the Tau’t Bato villages during your trek.
To get here, you need to travel by van from Puerto Princesa to Rizal. Scaling the summit of Mount Mantalingajan takes 3 days.
Calauit Safari Park is a game reserve and wildlife sanctuary located in Calauit Island. You can visit it on your own or as part of Coron Black Island tour.
It was originally created as a Little Africa. It’s home to various animals — both imported from abroad and endemic to Palawan. These include giraffes, zebras and Calamian deers. Most of the animals are allowed to roam free, while the rest are held in protected areas for safety. A favorite activity here is feeding the giraffes.

Palawan is one of the world’s best islands, according to Travel+Leisure magazine
Palawan once again put the Philippines on the map when it comes to tourism as it is included in Travel+Leisure magazine’s World’s Best 2021 .
With a score of 88.63, the province located in the region of Mimaropa ranked 19th on the magazine’s Top 25 Islands in the World , and fifth in the Asian category . Apart from its idyllic horizon, mountain views, and white sand beach, Palawan is recognized for being an “unrivaled diving” spot, just like Thailand’s Koh Samui.
“When they arrive, guests find mountains as well as white sand beaches washed by the Sulu and South China seas. Resorts range from eco-chic stays to the spectacular Amanpulo resort, accessible only by private plane,” the article says about Palawan. “Its 58 casitas and villas are nestled in the lush hillside and along the beach; each villa has its own chef and butler.”
Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat expressed her praise for the island for being included in the international travel poll, especially now that the country is reinvigorating its tourism.
“The award accorded to Palawan speaks for the country’s tourism destinations, still being on top of the minds of travelers. The Philippines’ natural wonders, coupled with the world-renowned Filipino hospitality, make destinations like Palawan truly one of the best, not just in the region, but in the world,” she says.
Released last Sept. 8, 2021, Travel+Leisure’s World's Best 2021 survey is held from Jan. 11 to May 10, 2021. Its readers vote on the best travel destinations as well as airlines, airports, cities, and hotels, among others, with the “hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.”

"It’s no wonder Palawan ranked as the most beautiful island in the world this year, as the clear aquamarine water, limestone cliffs, and lagoons of the island province of the Philippines are only the most basic highlights," says contributing editor Cynthia Drescher. "Palawan is home to nature reserves on both land and sea, with dolphins just offshore, marine gardens of giant clam, sea turtles nesting on white sand beaches, 600 species of butterflies, and lush palm forest like a Gilligan’s Island fever dream."

Iwahig Firefly Watching is an eco-tour where you can see these flickering insects up close in their natural habitat. Also called lightning bugs, fireflies are an incredible sight, as their trails create the illusion of lightning raining down from their tree and mangrove habitats that line the banks of the Sicsican and Iwahig Rivers.
About 17 KM from the city of Puerto Princesa , the watching site opens at 6 in the evening when fireflies are visible. The locals of Barangay Iwahig rehabilitates the area as a sustainable tourism initiative.

During the tour, flash photography is not allowed because lightning bugs are easily stressed and can be pretty sensitive to noise and unnecessary stimuli. So, it would be best to keep your mobile phones and cameras with flash photography in their cases during the tour. This will also allow you to focus on watching the fireflies and enjoy every moment of the experience.
Culion Island has a restful vibe where you can have some peace. The town of Culion is part of Palawan's Calamian Group of Islands. It was the former site of the world's largest leprosarium in the 1900s until the colony was declared leprosy-free in 2006.
This tour gives you a first-hand experience of how Culion went from an isolated island to a heritage site featuring Spanish settlement remnants. Today, you'll find the old nursery for children, a dormitory for males, a sanitorium, plazas, and other landmarks in Culion.
One of the attractions in Culion Island is Aguila's viewpoint, which will give you a stunning panoramic view of the island. You have to climb 333 steps to get there.
You’ll also find beaches with powdery white sand in Culion Island. You can join island-hopping tours in Culion to explore the waters of Ditaytayan Island, Malcapuya Island, and Waling-Waling Island.
Port Barton is a small coastal town in Palawan. Island hopping and lounging in beaches are the top activities here.
- Browse our list of the best hotels and resorts in Port Barton
Port Barton allows easy access and enjoyment of nearby islands, namely Starfish Island, Exotic Island, and Inaladelan Island. There's also German Island, a private island beach where you can swim with adorable sea turtles or sleep your cares away lying down on hammocks.

Besides island hopping, divers can also explore the Aquarium Reef, which showcases emerald waters. The diversity of tropical fishes and coral plateaus in this marine attraction will impress the nature lover within you.
Meanwhile, the Marine Sanctuary features the Black Coral, which looks like sycamore trees. The sanctuary is also home to Manta Rays. See them glide and loom over schools of fish of various sizes.
Long Beach in San Vicente is the Philippines's longest-spanning white beach and the second-longest in Southeast Asia with its 14-kilometer coastline. That's about thrice as long as Boracay 's White Beach.
If seclusion is what you need, you can get as far away as possible from the crowd by staying in Long Beach. Resorts range from budget to luxury accommodations on the beachfront and nearby areas, so you feel close to nature while soothing your spirit.
Rent a motorbike to explore Long Beach and other in-land attractions in San Vicente . There are also restaurants offering seafood and international cuisine in Long Beach. If you love sunset views, you can dine at any of these restaurants in time for the sunset.
Honda Bay is one of Puerto Princesa’s most-visited attractions. In Spanish, "Honda" means a bay having an above-average depth, which would tell you that it enjoys a wide variety of plant and animal species. The name of the bay and what it implies makes it unique indeed. No wonder Honday Bay is a well-known attraction for island-hopping tours.

Honda Bay is accessible from Puerto Princesa at a distance of 25 km. The bay has four unique islands you can lounge in:
Starfish Island is named after the orange-colored, five-armed starfish. This island is perhaps the busiest snorkeling site in Palawan, with diversity so rich you can see colorful starfishes of different sizes so close to the shoreline.
Pandan Island is mainly accessible to spectators during day tours. Privacy is one of the nicest things you can have in this private island resort boasting white sand beaches.
Cowrie Island is suitable for water sport activities, like banana boat riding, jet-skiing, and snorkeling. While waiting for your turn, you can have a few beers or margaritas al fresco style in its numerous bars, restaurants, and cabanas.
Luli Island is considered a mystical island because it magically surfaces during low tide and disappears in the coming of the high tide as if inviting you to hunt for the bequeathed treasures lying in wait underneath its shores. Swim in its cool waters or lounge on the beach.
Coron is one of the top diving sites in the Philippines . Here, you can find 13 World War II Japanese shipwrecks between the waters of Culion and Busuanga, giving the diving sites an aura of mystery and adventure.
Coron's shipwrecks have been marooned in their place for such a long time that corals have established colonies in them, as well as various kinds of fishes, sea turtles, and nudibranchs.
Among the diving sites in Coron, the Skeleton Wreck is viewable from the water surface. The Lusong Gunboat is just 11 meters off the Lusong Island coast and perfect for snorkelers, with its keel visible at low tide. Tangat Wreck is also like the Lusong Gunboat in terms of its near-surface view.

The 4-kilometer Nacpan Beach in El Nido is one of the top beaches in Palawan and the Philippines. Surrounded by verdant hills, you’ll feel the urge to settle in hammocks that you’ll find at the foot of these hills.
There are also numerous coconut groves where you can take shade from the sweltering heat of the sun, especially at noontime. Surfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding activities await you in this beach tour.

Because of its laid-back vibe, Coron Island is one of the top destinations among Palawan tour packages. From lakes to lagoons and beaches, the island is definitely for fun-loving water adventurers.

Another top attraction is Twin Lagoon, a body of water created by inlets from the sea and framed by towering limestone rock formations. Another island hopping spot is Siete Pecados, a snorkeling site where you can view corals lying on the marine sanctuary. You can also visit Banol Beach and CYC Beach, where you can lounge on its white sand shore.
El Nido is one of the most famous island destinations of local and foreign tourists, boasting the most beautiful beach resorts, majestic cliffs, and abundant marine life. There are numerous hostels, inns, and luxury villas that you can rent during your adventures in El Nido.

No trip to Palawan is complete without a tour of Puerto Princesa's Underground River , considered the world's second-longest subterranean river at 8.2 km long. The river also has the distinction of being in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and part of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The Underground River tour involves riding a paddle boat that will take you to the river's entrance. From there, you’ll be boarding a smaller boat to cruise along a 4.3-km portion of the river, which will give you a view of the river’s pristine waters, stunning limestone cliffs, and magnificent cave formations.
Inside the caves, you’ll see interesting stalactite and stalagmite rock formations, as well as birds, bats, and reptiles that live in the cave. Occasionally, you’ll see fishes and crabs within the river system, too.

Loved this tour! Was the perfect mix of activities and group time and relaxation / solo time. The 2 day island hopping with overnight stay on the remote island is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! Our tour guide cece was amazing too and made it really fun and involved everyone. Best snorkelling I’ve ever done too! Definitely recommending to friends and will be booking another one life tour in the future

Philippines Island Explorer 13 day
This was one of the best trips I've done. The itinerary was the perfect mix of activities and down time & I felt, hit the key places I'd travel to if doing it fully solo. Whilst the tour itself and the people I met on it were a big part of me having the best time, it wouldn't have been the same without our tour leader Andri. He helped join the group together before we even started and made everyone feel included once we got there. He was the best mix of chilled and reliable, super knowledgeable and put the needs of the group first like the wonderfully caring human he is. We always knew what we were doing and when and it felt like he made the trip run so smoothly - I only had to worry about turning up and having a good time. If you're thinking about booking this DO IT (and pray you'll have Andri has your leader)

Coron Island Life Expedition (Coron to Coron 3D2N)
Team Violet was incredible!!! The tour was beyond any expectations and the crew, especially Jerome and Paul, were so attentive, warm and funny. The food was soooo yummy and I missed the chef’s cooking once I left! Plenty of food to choose from and they accomodated to all dietary requirements. The islands were stunning and loved our fire on the beach to get to know each other more. Our tour group ended up making a WhatsApp group chat after all of our bonding together and I think our strong bond was due to Team Violets efforts to make us feel safe, happy and cared for! 5 Stars!!!

10 Days Do The Philippines Adventure Tour - Palawan Islands
This was an amazing 10 day tour of the Palawan islands in the Philippines. Starting at Puerto Prinsesa we journeyed up north through El Nido to Coron. Visiting must see locations with breathtaking views, it truly is an experience of a lifetime. The food was amazing and greatly exceeded all expectations, and our tour guide Jovian was excellent. He was so friendly and lively, doing his best to accommodate everyone, and make sure everything runs smoothly. He was very supportive of me and went above and beyond when I had an unfortunate injury at one of the beaches we went to. Overall the trip wouldn’t have been the same without him, he was one of the many highlights on this tour.
Philippines Palawan Island Getaway
Loved it and would do another tour again with Intrepid. The guide was very helpful. The Tour was relaxing and flexible with no strict schedule. Made friends with awesome people. And visited the beautiful El nido.
Palawan Getaway 5D/4N
This was a great itinerary! My only regret is that it wasn't longer - Palawan is beautiful and I didn't want to leave. El Nido was gorgeous and in my opinion better than Puerto Princesa. The hostel in El Nido (Our Melting Pot) was great - super social and full of young backpackers. It was also on the main strip, so there were loads of restaurants and bars, and it was about 5 min walk away from the beach. The tour there is just fab and the lagoons are beautiful. Lunch was included (there was a grill on the back of the boat, so we just anchored up in a quiet stretch of water and ate there). In Puerto I did the underground river tour which was amazing and I've never seen anything quite like it. The tour ended a little early and we were given the option to do a zipline from one island to another - so much fun and definitely recommended if you have the chance! The hotel in Puerto was a B&B and was very homely and friendly, however it was a little further away from the centre of town so there were not as many things to do within walking distance. Be aware that this tour is very self-directed and a lot of the time you have to get yourself from Point A to Point B - i.e. you are not ferried around in a group. The tours and transfers are public tours so you're in a group which changes every day, and not in a consistent tour group (which was totally fine for me, but just to be aware of). The transfers between Puerto and El Nido took around 5-6 hours in a van, the roads are very windy and bumpy so it wasn't the most comfortable - but there is a stop half way, and the views along the coastal road were really great. Overall - a great intro to Palawan with some amazing sights.
Puerto Princesa & El Nido Adventure 8D/7N
We had an incredible time on our tour of the Philippines! Everyone went above and beyond to ensure our trip was absolutely perfect! Camping under the stars on our own private island was the highlight, as well as having lunch on a secluded island amongst a busy day of island hopping. This is a self-guided tour though, which we weren’t entirely sure about before coming over, so probably wouldn’t advise doing if you’re a solo traveler as you will be by yourself for the full 8 days.. otherwise would 100% recommend this tour!

Here are a few more things you probably didn't know about the best island in the world:
1. It's home to incredible marine life.
According to the Palawan Diver's organization , the crystal clear waters of Palawan are home to 120 species of coral reef, 800 species of exotic fish and it's known to have sunken shipwrecks, making this the ultimate scuba diving destination. 2. You'll find the largest underground river here.
According to UNESCO , the world's largest underground river, a five mile waterway that runs through the caves beneath the island's mountains, is located inside Palawan's St. Paul National Park. Palawan retains spot as World’s Best Island for 2020 by Travel + Leisure
The so-called last frontier Palawan once again secures the number one spot as “World’s Best Island”, topping the 24 other Islands worldwide according to New York based prominent Travel + Leisure magazine.
The ranking was based from the annual survey involving millions of readers conducted by the magazine. The poll ended last March 2, days before the pandemic hits the globe where travel experiences and opinions on travel and leisure differs from today’s situation.

Travel + Leisure writer Sara Clemence described Palawan as “Roughly 270 miles long and just 25 across at its widest point, on a map Palawan looks like an arm extending from the Philippines to Borneo. It’s dramatic at sea level, with mountains rising directly from the ocean palm-edged beaches. Though it’s difficult to reach from many parts of the world, once travelers get there they can dive in World War II wrecks, explore old-growth rain forests, and paddle one of the world’s longest subterranean rivers at Puerto Princesa.“
“The landscape and scenery are just gorgeous,” wrote one fan. “It offers the most beautiful beaches, resorts, and scenery anywhere.”
Department of Tourism immediately acknowledged the said citation and called for celebration. Tourism Chief Bernadette Romulo Puyat said that this recognition is important because it came from the readers of a prominent magazine.
“It’s wonderful to see that our rehabilitation and sustainable development efforts last year, especially in El Nido and Coron, were well-received by tourists everywhere,” Puyat said.
Palawan was a consistent winner for World’s Best Island since 2016 for Travel + Leisure, also in this year’s list is Boracay, which landed on the 14 th spot.

Palawan Travel Guide – Philippines ’ Most Beautiful Island!
Why visit palawan.
Palawan Island is a tropical paradise, with hands-down the best beaches I’ve been to in Southeast Asia. (In fact, second in broader Asia to the beautiful Maldives !) The ocean is all imaginable shades of turquoise, the beaches are sandy white, and the aquatic life is vibrant.
It’s therefore not surprising that Palawan was voted the World’s Best Island by Travel & Leisure in 2015 and 2016. It also received similar accolades from Conde Nast and National Geographic. A beach bum’s dream destination!
This Palawan travel guide will help you plan the perfect Palawan break!

Where to Go in Palawan + Palawan Activities
Palawan travel is all about the tropical beaches and island hopping! We visited El Nido and Port Barton, and spent our time island hopping, kayaking, snorkeling, chilling at beach bars, reading and patting beach dogs (always a favorite holiday activity). Highlights were the beautiful clear water and the snorkeling, where we saw lots of tropical fish and a few turtles.
El Nido or Coron Island-Hopping
For island-hopping, the most popular Palawan travel destinations are El Nido and Coron, and for good reason. So which one is best?
Coron is considered better for divers and is more laidback (read: slightly quieter).
El Nido has incredible lagoons and more nightlife.
However, Coron and El Nido both have beautiful islands and excellent snorkeling. If you can’t fit in both, choose one and you’ll be guaranteed to have an incredible holiday. Read this article and this article for a more in depth comparison of El Nido and Coron.
Island hopping at beautiful El Nido
We chose El Nido for the stunning Bacuit Bay and chilled beach bars. The down-side? More than a few others had the same idea (surprising that!). We found ourselves sharing the idyllic islands with a string of boats that follow the exact same tour path and descend on the same islands at the same time. The fact that they’re named Tour A, B, C and D should probably give this away…
We attempted to avoid the crowds with a private island hopping tour, with mixed success. The boats are required to follow the same route for their permit. We did, however, manage to convince our driver to skip an island or two so that we could reach the next island before the rest of the boats.
Port Barton for Laid Back Beach Vibes
If El Nido’s all too busy for you, then Port Barton may just be the answer. Port Barton is a sleepy fishing village on a quiet beach, with a laid back vibe and rustic accommodation. Even better, Port Barton opens up to beautiful islands and bays to rival El Nido.
As with El Nido, the main activities are island hopping tours, but with much less boat traffic. Happily, it’s still possible to find a deserted island all to yourself. Again, we did a private island hopping tour. Unlike El Nido, our driver managed to dodge the crowds and find our own little slice of paradise. (Note: We first had to convince him that we were happy to miss the ‘famous’ beaches that everyone else was visiting.)
Island hopping at Port Barton – just as beautiful as El Nido, sans crowds
As well as island hopping, Port Barton has a couple of short hikes to lush waterfalls with swimming holes. These are well worth the trip for a change of scenery. (Just in case you get bored of sandy white beaches and limestone rock formations).
Port Barton has been slightly off the tourist radar. This which could be due to the bumpy gravel roads going in and fewer dining and accommodation options. I suspect this all may change in coming years, as road upgrades and hotel developments are in progress. Visit while it’s still a laid back locale and you won’t be disappointed.
Puerto Princesa Underground River
Other than island hopping, the main attraction in Palawan is the Puerto Princesa Underground River. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can travel by boat through the world’s longest navigable underground river through a network of limestone caves.
The underground river is around 80km from Puerto Princesa. You can easily visit on a day trip from Puerto Princesa or even en route to Port Barton or El Nido.
With its limestone karst landscape and otherworldly atmosphere, it’s easy to see why the underground river is one of the most popular attractions in Palawan. However, as with any tourist hotspot, this inevitably comes with packaged tour pitfalls and plenty of crowds.
After reading the TripAdvisor reviews (most of which are very positive), we decided to give the underground river a miss in favor of more beach time, as we prefer to avoid the hordes and have been treated to incredible caves on other trips.
Palawan Travel and Transport
The Philippines isn’t the easiest place to get around, and it often takes a full day to get from A to B. Plan your time accordingly.
Most international and domestic flights go via Manila or Cebu, so you’ll often need to take a connecting flight, and overland transfers can be slow. A hassle when you’re travelling, but it does mean that the stunning Philippines islands are less crowded than most Asian beach hotspots.
How to Get to Palawan
In Palawan, most people fly into Puerto Princesa, where there’s regular flights from Manila and Cebu. You can also fly direct from Manila to El Nido and Coron to get your island-hopping on without an overland transfer. Expect to pay more for these flights in exchange for saving a good few hours in a van.
We flew direct from Manila to El Nido on a morning Air Swift in around 1h 15m. The extra $100 or so for flights was quickly forgotten when we gained an extra day in paradise and were swimming in the ocean by 10am.
How to Get Around Palawan
Once you’re in Palawan, it’s pretty easy to get around, if a little slow.
Port Barton and El Nido: You can get a shared shuttle van from Puerto Princesa to Port Barton in 3-4 hours or from Puerto Princesa to El Nido in 5-6 hours. Times are slightly faster (and the trip more comfortable) if you fork out for a private van transfer.
Coron: To get to Coron, take a short flight from Puerto Princesa (1h 20m) or a ferry from El Nido (around 3.5 hours).
Around town: Local transport around the towns is the tricycle, the Filipino version of a tuk tuk. Tricycles are cheap, easy and convenient. However, they’re not as comfortable as some other tuk tuks as it’s a tight squeeze to fit two people in and the roads are bumpy.
Pretty chuffed with my tricycle airport pick up
Palawan Travel Accommodation
Palawan accommodation ranges from backpacker hostels to boutique guesthouses to luxury private island resorts, and everything in between. Whatever your budget, you’ll find something to suit in Palawan.
Luxury: I was pretty tempted by El Nido Resorts . El Nido Resorts is a group of luxury resorts dotted on stunning islands across El Nido with prices to match ($500+ per night when I was looking). I almost booked El Nido Resorts Pangulasian Island , but (unusually!) managed to restrain myself from blowing an entire holiday’s budget on a few night’s accommodation, and instead went for mid-range boutique options.
El Nido Accommodation : We spent four nights at The Birdhouse El Nido , unique glamping tents perched on a cliff above the lovely Marimegmeg Beach. The tents have all the creature comforts you need, with decent beds, bathrooms and, best of all, balconies with out of this world views of the bay below.
Marimegmeg Beach is the nicer of the mainland beaches and has some chilled beach bars to laze the day away at.
Stunning views over Marimegmeg Beach from the Birdhouse ‘nests’
Port Barton Accommodation : We then spent four nights at Secret Paradise Resort & Turtle Sanctuary , a small resort on a private island which has to be up there with the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Big call, I know, but I’m throwing it out there.
If you can cope with pretty average food and service, then I definitely recommend Secret Paradise Resort for the stunning location, tranquility, snorkeling and chance to see turtles laying or hatching on the beach. ( Tip : Take your own snorkeling gear, theirs sucks.)
Secret Paradise Resort from the lookout – definitely an apt name!
Palawan Climate + Best Time to Visit Palawan
Palawan dry season.
While temperatures remain pleasant year around with an average high of 30 degrees, Palawan travel is best during the dry season from November to May .
From November, the rains ease off, but don’t completely disappear, and it can rain at any time during the dry season.
December to February is the cool dry season. March to May is the hot dry season, with humidity peaking in hottest months of April and May.
Weather wise, the very best months for Palawan travel are during the drier and relatively cooler months of February and March.
If you’re a diver, water visibility is said to be best from March to May. As a bonus, the ocean is also the calmest during this time.
Palawan Rainy Season
The rainy season starts in earnest from June and continues until around November. During this time, there can be heavy monsoon rains, rough seas and muddy roads. All of this can put a slight damper on a tropical beach holiday, or even stop Palawan travel altogether if you encounter a severe tropical storm.
Palawan Travel Guide Tips
Money: Take plenty of pesos! The only ATMs on Palawan (as at 2018) are in Puerto Princesa and one in El Nido (which regularly runs out of money!) and not many places take cards.
Snorkelling Gear: Bring your own snorkel gear if possible. We found that supplies were limited and of pretty poor quality. Not fun having a face full of seawater.
Food: The Philippines is not known for its food, and they seem to have a penchant for putting vinegar in EVERYTHING. I subsisted on rice and vegetables with a little bit of fish. Even then it wasn’t anything to write home about. Beer was cheap and tasty though!
Service: Service ranges from ‘island time’ to virtually non-existent. Try to manage your expectations and go with the flow, and you’ll soon be rolling in island time too. (Or, let it get to you, and you’ll be constantly frustrated. Your choice.)
I hope you’ve enjoyed this Palawan travel guide. Palawan has been my favorite Southeast Asian beach holiday by far. I’d love to explore more of the Philippines islands in the future. I’d love some tips for the rest of the Philippines, so share away in the comments if you’ve been there!

As a Korean living in the Philippines, I have grown to love this country and consider it my second home. I love the warmth not just of the weather but of the people as well.
This is a very good itinerary <3 Will bookmark this page for future reference when I go visit Palawan next year. Thankssss!
I can’t wait to retire in the Philippines. There’s just so much to see, discover and enjoy in your country. The people are also just as amazing
Palawan is very beautiful and interesting, I want to go there soon. I want to discover something.
Indeed! Palawan is a great place and must be on your bucket list. Ive been to El Nido and spent 3 days, and Puerto Princessa and spent 5 days last year. I wish i could stay longer. LOL. I like the calm environment. So relaxing. So natural. I like the people and the cleanliness of them. But no one knows that it was the last. I mean now that there was corona virus, I’m afraid of. So the next destination if the corona virus already vanished is Coron. I heard of it but never been there.
Palawan is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the world, and probably the best island to visit in the Philippines! The only thing is that, as of now and due to the pandemic, it’s out of tourists and economically struggling… Let’s hope a new more eco-responsible tourism will follow when its possible to travel again.
Your blog post on Palawan is truly captivating! Your vivid descriptions of the turquoise ocean, sandy white beaches, and vibrant aquatic life have painted a beautiful picture of this tropical paradise. Your practical tips on travel, accommodation, and local activities are incredibly helpful for anyone planning a trip to this stunning location.
Next time don’t forget to visit Balabac in Southern Palawan

Palawan ranks 19th in Travel + Leisure magazine’s Top 25 Islands in the World
Palawan ranked 19th in the Top 25 Islands in the World listed by Travel + Leisure magazine’s World’s Best Awards on September 8.
The island, renowned for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear seas, and rich wildlife, as well as being the country’s final frontier, received an 88.63 rating from readers.
Palawan was ranked fifth among Asian islands on the list. Other popular locations were the Andaman Islands, Thailand’s Koh Samui, Indonesia’s Bali, and the Maldives.
According to T+L, the activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value of the island were the factors considered for the rating.
“The best islands in the world, according to T+L readers, are the kind of Instagram-perfect destinations that travelers fantasize about on winter evenings: dreamy, sun-drenched landscapes surrounded by the bluest waters. And since there’s an island destination for everyone, what constitutes “paradise” likely boils down to specific interests — history, culture, heart-pumping adventure, or something else entirely, “ the article read.
Palawan became the Top 1 Best Island in the World in the same travel magazine rankings in the years 2013, 2016, and 2017.
Meanwhile, Mílos, Greece grabbed first place this year captivating tourists with its color-changing landscapes and picturesque tavernas.
The list was conducted from January to May 2021 when COVID-19 restrictions around the world were gradually lifted.

Palawan and Cebu star in Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best Islands list
Palawan and Cebu have been chosen by global travelers as among the best islands in the annual World’s Best Awards of Travel and Leisure (T+L) magazine.
The T+L survey results for “ The 15 Best Islands in the World ” ranked the two popular Philippine island destinations within the top 8 of the list of the most beautiful havens for island hopping.
Palawan, described by travel writer Rebecca Ascher-Walsh as the Edenic Philippine outpost, bagged a score for 90.04 to land at 6th spot.
The three-time number 1 island choice for T+L readers was praised by Ascher-Walsh for its “… verdant mountains, a five-mile- long underground river, limestone caves, and spectacular scuba diving, its appeal is as clear as its turquoise waters.”
Palawan is renowned for being home to Seven Wonders of the World’s Puerto Princesa subterranean river, world class top luxury resort Amanpulo, the El Nido and Coron destinations.
Cebu, which debuted on the list in 2016 , came in this year at #8 with a score of 89.10. The island province offers beaches, dive spots and recreational activities, and has been known to host whale sharks.
Writer Melanie Lieberman wrote, “The Philippines’ predominance shows that discerning travelers are willing to travel great distances for the rewards of clear waters and sugary white beaches.”
Popular top pick Boracay, closed for rehabilitation since April, did not make the cut for the world’s best but was still listed on the “Top 10 Islands in Asia” along with Palawan and Cebu.
At #5 is Palawan with a score of 90.04, #6 Cebu with a score of 89.10, and #8 Boracay with a score of 86.14
The T+L readers rated Palawan, Cebu, and Boracay according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

11 Amazing Reasons to Visit Palawan, Philippines
You’ve probably seen the photos of sparkling azure waters, towering limestone formations, and white-sand beaches – the image of paradise. This is Palawan. But if you still need a nudge to finally book that trip, here’s eleven.
It’s the best island in the world.
Don’t just take our word for it. Take it from Travel + Leisure and their trusty community of globetrotters who have voted Palawan the “World’s Best Island” for two straight years. In the 2017 ranking, close runners-up were islands like Boracay, Santorini, and Bali. Read on and see why Palawan takes the cake.
Gorgeous beaches left and right
Breathtaking views
Those photos you’ve seen on travel websites or your Instagram explore page are not filter-saved, too-good-to-be-true pictures — that’s actually how beautiful the island is. Yes, you can kayak on crystal clear waters before karst landscapes ; yes, you can dive shipwrecks and swim next to turtles; and yes, those are the actual colors of the sky at sunset. The views you’ll witness on a trip to Palawan are of the kind that will make you pinch yourself and ever so slightly consider chucking your ticket home.
It’s home to a “Wonder of Nature”
Less than an hour drive from the capital city proper is the Puerto Princesa Underground River. In 2012, this national park was officially included in the list of the World’s New Seven Wonders of Nature for its impressive natural make-up. The underground river, which is considered one of the longest in the world, is entered through a cave and explored aboard a paddle boat. The cave is made up of remarkable stalactite and stalagmite formations and has recently been discovered to be housing small waterfalls as well. Tourists can visit the park through a boat ride from the port of Sabang or a jungle hiking trail beginning from Sabang Beach.
It’s the perfect chance to disconnect
As tempting as it sometimes is to post envy-worthy updates on all your social media accounts in a place as beautiful as Palawan, it’s also a place that invites you to disconnect from such distractions. It encourages you to focus on the place and moment. Instead of spending a half hour editing that Instagram photo and watching the favorites roll in, what’s even more worthwhile is chatting with the locals , renting a scooter and driving off to a secret beach, laying on a hammock by the sea, book in hand. This is where genuine moments and real life become even more picture-perfect than the uploads on your feed.
Diving and snorkel spots
Here’s some news you’ll love: Palawan’s sights under the sea are just as stunning as those above. Leisure snorkelers will enjoy having schools of fish swim around them in the waters of many Palawan beaches but the island includes truly unique underwater sights as well, like the war wrecks found in Coron. Palawan is also a jumping-off point to the Tubbataha Reefs, a site with among the most remarkable marine biodiversities in the world. It’s quite a long trip to the reefs and divers’ only option is to visit via live-aboard boats, so prior arrangements are necessary.
1. Fresh, affordable seafood
Bar, Market
In Palawan, visitors can feast like high rollers and enjoy meals of rock lobster, prawns, and crabs daily, for cheap. Many island hopping tours, in places like El Nido and Coron especially, will already have this taken care of by the tour company. In the middle of the day, on your chartered boat or an island you’ve chosen to dock on for lunch, the crew will lay a delicious spread of grilled seafood and rice. Some restaurants, like K’na Boyet in the city Baywalk, also specialize in a “select-and-cook” type of dining experience where customers can handpick their meal from the fresh seafood laid out up front and have it cooked to their liking. If you’re interested in grilling up some of your own on a regular day, pay a visit to the palengke, or the local wet market, and browse through the morning’s fresh catch.

Off-the-beaten-path destinations
Despite hordes of tourists having discovered this paradise of an island in recent years, it still has a lot of hidden gems for those who enjoy veering from the typical tourist route. While El Nido and Coron can get dizzyingly busy, many places near Puerto Princesa are still left tourist-free. For a change of scene, turn a beach day into a hiking day and hit up one of the many mountains on the island. Quite a few hiking trails near the city lead up to waterfalls so you can be sure to have something refreshing awaiting at the end of a trek.
As beautiful as the tourist favorites of Palawan are, sometimes sharing a place with too many people can take away a bit of its charm. Those in search of beaches on the down low should check out the beaches of San Vicente, or the islands of Port Barton. These fishing villages are lesser known to tourists and will give you more chances of solitude and getting to know the locals and local culture. For beaches that are at their rawest, purest form, venture south to the islands of Balabac where commercialization and tourism have yet to leave their traces.
It’s backpacker friendly
Being a Southeast Asian country, the Philippines and its neighbors are known to be relatively cheap for most tourists. So Palawan is perfect for backpackers who love the rustic experience of renting a small nipa hut by the sea or even a trusty hammock for accommodations and eating at a carinderia (a small, affordable eatery) with the town locals for meals. Though the tours in popular destinations like Coron and El Nido may set you back a bit, other daily expenses will always have simple and cheap alternatives for the traveller on a budget.
But if luxury is what you seek…
While perfect for backpackers, Palawan can also be the epitome of a luxurious tropical escape. There are several high-end havens on the island such as El Nido’s island resorts of Lagen , Pangalusian , and Miniloc . But if you’re really going big, you might be more interested in a hideaway that has catered to Hollywood A-listers such as Tom Cruise, Mariah Carey, and Robert de Niro. Though technically still belonging to the Palawan province, the exclusive resort of Amanpulo is found on Pamalican Island, just northeast of mainland Palawan.
In exchange for the hefty price tag, this resort provides its guests with utmost privacy and solitude, keeping casitas and villas far apart, allowing them to feel like they’ve got paradise all to themselves — and the personal butler assigned them for the duration of their stay, of course. Guests are flown in via chartered planes directly to the island’s private airstrip and get to enjoy top-notch amenities from spa treatments to watersports and floating bars.
It’s the country’s ‘Last Ecological Frontier’
Palawan is also known as the Philippines’ “Last Ecological Frontier”. Its forests and seas are home to impressive biodiversity and it is this kind of natural beauty that keeps visitors coming. But this title is also a good reminder to travel responsibly and sustainably; to leave no trace, whether in hiking up the island’s lush mountains or diving down to its coral reefs. Tourism is expanding more rapidly than ever before, so this should be accompanied by a conscious effort to be educated and responsible travellers. It’s the only way to have all these reasons hold true for years to come.

The Top 25 Islands in the World in 2021
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the world .
This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.
The best islands in the world, according to T+L readers, are the kind of Instagram-perfect destinations that travelers fantasize about on winter evenings: dreamy, sun-drenched landscapes surrounded by the bluest waters . And since there's an island destination for everyone, what constitutes "paradise" likely boils down to specific interests — history, culture, heart-pumping adventure, or something else entirely.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.
Looking to spot iguanas lazing about and sea lions playing with snorkelers in the waters off the white beaches? The Galápagos (No. 10) is for you. For unrivaled diving, there is Koh Samui in Thailand (No. 7) and the Philippines' Palawan (No. 19). If you're hoping to spend your days indulging in homemade pasta and wine from local vineyards, consider Sicily (No. 6) or Sardinia (No. 16).
Plenty of options abound for those who want to stay closer to home. "Bring a camera, lots of reading material, and walk the fabulous powdery beach," said one reader of Harbour Island (No. 17), a Bahamian paradise renowned for its pink sands. Another favorite: the volcanic island St. Lucia (No. 20). "Anse Chastanet Beach is beautiful with the black sand and small snorkeling area," shared a voter. "You have to pay a fee for usage, but it is worth it."
As in so many years, it was a Greek island that emerged as readers' top choice. Find out why they consider Mílos No. 1 among the best islands in the world.
1. Mílos, Greece
Located in the middle of the Cycladic islands, Mílos rose from its No. 3 spot last year thanks to friendly locals who welcome visitors to explore the quaint villages (Trypiti is famous for its windmills, Plaka for its sunsets), extraordinary tavernas, and dozens of picturesque beaches that vary in color depending on whether they are formed from shells, stones, or sand. Visitors will find many options for lodging. "We stayed at a small B&B right on the water," shared one reader. "Great location." But if you're looking to spoil yourself, consider splurging on Milos Cove, a minimalist 42-room aerie where private pools offer unrivaled views of the Aegean.

I have been to El Nido Palawan and it is the most beautiful resort I have ever been! The prestine white beaches and the miles and miles of coral reefs is just mind blowing! This is definitely more beautiful than Hawaii’s beaches. I will never forget the experience I had when the resort attendant asked us “what would you like to do tomorrow?” When we said, “We would love to just relax and swim.” They brought us to this cave that can only be access during low-tide. Inside the cave is a small island with an opening above that let’s the sun shine on the small island! We had a private island and a natural pool to enjoy all day! I will never forget El Nido Palawan. You got to see it for yourself! 🙂
