PGA Tour Money List

Scottie scheffler raises the bar again on list of most money earned in single season on pga tour, share this article.

pga tour earnings this year

There can be a lot of money won playing professional tournament golf, especially on the PGA Tour and especially in the last two decades. And especially in the last two seasons.

Prize money has exploded on the circuit thanks to the signature events and the majors boosting their purses.

Because of the influx of cash, four of the top five single-seasons for money earned happened during the 2022-23 season.

Note: This list does not count bonus money nor does it account for money earned on the DP World Tour.

10 Tiger Woods, 2005

2005 Masters

$10,628,024

In addition to winning more than $10 million and his fourth green jacket, Tiger Woods delivered the most memorable shot of his career and perhaps in all of 21st-century golf Sunday at Augusta. His chilling chip on 16 eventually morphed into a Nike commercial. Overall, Woods won six times on the PGA Tour in 2005.

9 Wyndham Clark, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

$10,757,490

Clark won the U.S. Open for his first major championship. It was his second win of his breakout season. Clark made 24 of 27 cuts, while posting seven top-10 finishes. He’s made two-thirds of his career earnings total of $15 million this season.

8 Tiger Woods, 2006-07

2007 BMW Championship

$10,867,052

Riding the momentum and a (sort-of) winning streak from 2006, Tiger Woods continued to dominate on the PGA Tour during the first of his many comebacks. Woods won the Buick Invitational for the seventh time – and extended his PGA Tour-events-started winning streak to seven. The streak ended in February when Woods lost in the Round of 16 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Woods ended the year by claiming the inaugural FedEx Cup, winning the final two events of the playoffs. The BMW Championship was his 60th career PGA Tour victory. He dominated in the Tour Championship, winning by eight shots with a 23-under 257 (64-63-64-66). That remains the lowest 72-hole score of his career.

7 Vijay Singh, 2004

2004 PGA Championship

$10,905,166

At age 41, Vijay Singh was as good as ever on the PGA Tour in 2004, winning the  PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and eight other Tour events. His overall finishes were equally impressive: he made 28-of-29 cuts, posted 18 top-10s and 24 top-25s. He also won PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.

6 Jordan Spieth, 2014-15

2015 U.S. Open

$12,030,465

At the age of 22, Jordan Spieth was the reigning U.S. Open and Masters champion when he won the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus. He became the youngest Tour Player of the Year since Tiger Woods in 1997. In addition to those two majors won during the 2014-15 season, Spieth also captured the Valspar in March, the John Deere Classic in July and the Tour Championship to complete a memorable season on multiple fronts.

5 Rory McIlroy, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

$13,921,008

Rory McIlroy has two wins this season and of the 17 events he played, he made the weekend at 15 of them. Twelve times he finished in the top 10, twice he was a runner-up.

4 Scottie Scheffler, 2021-22

2022 Masters

$14,046,910

After entering the 2022 calendar year without a PGA Tour win, the 25-year-old Texan has vaulted into this list thanks to four victories in six starts, each win more impressive than the first. Scheffler finally broke through to victory lane in February at the WM Phoenix Open. He followed that up with a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then came his first WGC win at the Dell Technologies Match Play. Now he’s a major champ, having won at Augusta National Golf Club to earn the green jacket. Over Memorial Day weekend, Scheffler almost won again, coming up short in a playoff against Sam Burns in the Charles Schwab Challenge. Still, he took home $915,600 for his work over the 73 holes. He took over the top spot with a T-2 at the U.S. Open, where he earned $1,557,687.

3 Viktor Hovland, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

Viktor Hovland looks on from the eighth green during a practice round ahead of the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. (Photo: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

$14,112,235

Viktor Hovland won twice this season: the Memorial, a designated event, and the BMW Championship, a playoff event. Both wins were good for $3.6 million. He made the cut in all 22 tournaments he entered and finished in the top 10 eight times. If Hovland were the top money winner this season, he’d have broken Scottie Scheffler’s single-season mark set a year ago, but in the age of signature events, Hovland’s whopping total ranks just third this season (and third best ever).

2 Jon Rahm, 2022-23

2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship

$16,522,608

Jon Rahm led the PGA Tour this season with four wins, including the Masters, his second career major, which was good for $3.24 million. He won $2.7 million at the Sentry, $1.44 million at the American Express and $3.6 million at the Genesis Invitatonal. Toss in 10 top 10s and that’s a lot of jack for one season. He’s also now gone over $50 million in career earnings.

2023 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial

$21,014,342

Scottie Scheffler, for the second year in a row, has set the new bar for most money earned in a single season . He made 22 of 22 cuts and posted 16 top 10s and has two wins, banking $3.6 million at the WM Phoenix Open and $4.5 million at the Players Championship, the richest prize on the PGA Tour.

Crazy to think he beat last year’s mark by about $7 million. He’s made $35 million in just the last two seasons and $42.5 million for his career.

Money Matters

Inside the PGA Tour's new program that guarantees all exempt players will make a minimum of $500K

1371858552

Rookie Cameron Young was able to make more than $6 million this season. But for first-timers less fortunate moving forward, the PGA Tour is guaranteeing they'll make at least $500,000.

Cliff Hawkins

ATLANTA — Much of the talk surrounding the PGA Tour in recent months has focused on figuring out ways top players can be compensated well enough to want to stick around and not be lured away by LIV Golf. But on Wednesday, tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced a new financial incentive program geared not just for the tour’s biggest stars, but all its members.

For the 2022-23 season, all fully exempt tour players who compete in 15 tournaments will be guaranteed to earn $500,000 through the creation of the Earnings Assurance Program. For rookies and returning members to the tour, that money isn’t just guaranteed, but will be paid up front, with the players drawing against it during the season from their earnings.

“We believe it meets the challenging dynamic of how players manage and invest in their careers, and it's comparable to how other leagues approach their athlete compensation,” Monahan said when discussing the program during a press conference ahead of the Tour Championship.

MORE: PGA Tour adds more lucrative events, gets top players to commit to play together on regular basis

According to Monahan, any player making more than $500,000 will, obviously, accrue all the money they earn. And any player who comes up short of $500,000, the tour at the end of the year will pay the difference.

Typically, 215 to 220 golfers are fully exempt during the PGA Tour season. The tour is confident the majority of those players will surpass the $500,000 threshold. For that reason, Monahan said it was estimated the program would cost the tour between $2 million and $3 million to implement.

During the 2021-22 season, 163 players earned more than $500,000 on tour.

“I think what we're trying to do here is that, as you start a season and you plan for a season knowing the monies that you have to invest to compete … at the highest level,” Monahan said. “There are significant costs. So if you’re not able to play for whatever reason, you have that as a backstop. You know that that’s there for you.”

There were 28 rookies on the PGA Tour this season, led by the meteoric rise of Cameron Young. His seven top-10s this season include a third at the PGA Championship and a second at the Open at St. Andrews, which combined for $6.5 million in earnings through the BMW Championship.

MORE: Why the Player Impact Program will become even more important (and lucrative) in 2023

Down the list of rookies, however, there are six who did not earn $500,000 and thus would have been paid the difference: Paul Barjon, Dylan Wu, Curtis Thompson, David Skinns, Jared Wolfe and Joshua Creel.

The program, however, will benefit not just newcomers to the tour, but even some who already have had stand out careers. During the 2022-23 season, former FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker played 22 events but struggled with just two top-25 finishes. He wound up earning $352,198. Even a player like him, however, would be entitled to the $500,000 minimum, with the tour paying the remaining $147,802.

Hovland Claims PGA Tour Championship, Record $34.5M in Earnings

Last Sunday, Viktor Hovland shot a course record 61 at Olympia Fields Golf Club in Illinois to come from behind to win the BMW Championship in the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The career-low round clinched a $3.6 million payday. “Nothing that beats that,” Hovland said.

The 25-year-old Norwegian just beat that.

Hovland ran away from the field this week to capture the PGA Tour Championship, with Xander Schauffele finishing in second, five strokes back. The victory also secured Hovland the FedEx Cup Playoffs title and its $18 million bonus. The five-year pro set a new PGA Tour record for one-year earnings with $34.5 million, including his prize money, FedEx bonus and Comcast Business Tour top 10 bonus.

The FedEx Cup playoff launched in 2007 and carried a $75 million bonus pool this year. Rory McIlroy won it last year for his third title; Tiger Woods is the only other golfer with two wins. Schauffele finished second at the Tour Championship in Atlanta for a $6.5 million FedEx bonus, followed by Wyndham Clark ($5 million) and McIlroy ($4 million).

After Hovland, the golfers with the highest total earnings for 2023 were Scottie Scheffler ($26.4 million), Jon Rahm ($21.3 million), McIlroy ($20.3 million) and Clark ($17.8 million). McIlroy’s $28.4 million in earnings last year set the previous Tour record.

It has been a banner year for golfers’ bank accounts after the PGA Tour boosted prize money this season to compete with LIV Golf. The PGA established 13 “elevated” events that feature increased winnings totaling $315 million, up 47% from 2022. The PGA Tour’s total purse for the year is expected to top $560 million, an increase of $140 million.

Scheffler set a record last year for official PGA Tour prize money with $14 million. Three golfers—Scheffler ($21 million), Rahm ($16.5 million) and Hovland ($14.1 million)—topped the record this year, with McIlory just $100,000 behind.

Last year, LIV recruited Bryson Dechambeau, Dustin Johnson , Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson , Patrick Reed, Cameron Smith, and dozens of other players. In addition to massive signing bonuses, its eight no-cut events last year had total prize money of $255 million. Johnson topped LIV’s prize money list with $35.6 million. In 2023, the 14 LIV events are scheduled to pay $405 million in total.

In June, the PGA Tour, LIV and DP World Tour, Europe’s main golf circuit, reached an agreement to merge their commercial interests into a single, for-profit global golf entity. It ended all litigation between LIV and the PGA Tour.

Hovland and other PGA Tour stars will add to their prize money haul via the Tour’s Player Impact Program (PIP), which began in 2021 to funnel more money to top players who bring attention to the sport. It paid out $40 million during the first year and jumped to $100 million for 2022. Hovland’s total earnings should hit $40 million if he finishes in the program’s top six.

Scottie Scheffler moves up the PGA Tour career earnings list, averaging $361,000 per day over the last 35 days

S cottie Scheffler won the 2024 Masters on Sunday (April 14). The 27-year-old finished four strokes 11-under 277 to beat Ludvig Aberg at Augusta National Golf Club. He won the coveted Green Jacket for the second time in his career.

Notably, the World No. 1 golfer bagged $3.6 million in earnings from the win, taking his season earnings to over $15 million, according to Spotrac.

Scheffler's win at the Masters saw him shoot up the PGA Tour career earnings list. The ace golfer currently sits 10th all-time with $57.6 million, behind the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and several others.

It is pertinent to note that the nine-time Tour winner became the fastest player to surpass $50 million in career earnings, accomplishing the feat in 113 tournaments.

Listed below is the season-by-season breakdown of Scheffler's earnings on the Tour (Number of events and figures included as per Spotrac:

Scottie Scheffler's 2024 PGA Tour season earning

As mentioned earlier, Scottie Scheffler 's official PGA Tour earnings for the 2024 season currently sit at $15.1 million. Interestingly, a big chunk of this has come in the last few weeks. The in-form golfer made a whopping $12,653,735 in on-course earnings alone over the last 35 days. He averaged $361,535 per day during that time.

It is pertinent to note that Scheffler had registered back-to-back wins at The Players Championship and the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational ahead of the Masters. The ace golfer bagged $4.5 million and $4 million from the events respectively. He'd finished T2 at Houston Open, earning $553,735, just ahead of the Green Jacket event.

Scheffler's T6 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T3 finish at the Phoenix Open and T10 at the Genesis Open have all contributed to the big leap in his earnings. Interestingly, Scheffler's caddie, Ted Scott, has reportedly earned $1.2 million this year, owing to the standard 10% cut for wins.

It is pertinent to note that the World No. 1 golfer has only played nine events this year. With over 30 events remaining, including three Major championships, it'll be interesting to see how much Scottie Scheffler manages to bank.

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy among big PGA Tour payouts

Rory McIlroy explains why the PGA Tour's equity figures are insufficient to compete with LIV Golf's payouts. (0:19)

Tiger Woods , Rory McIlroy and other PGA Tour stars are about to receive massive bonuses for their loyalty.

The Telegraph reported Wednesday that Woods will receive up to $100 million in equity as part of the newly created for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises, with McIlroy getting about half that amount.

The payouts, which are set to be disclosed to the players by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Wednesday, are a way to thank players for sticking with the PGA Tour instead of jumping to the rival LIV Golf League and huge paydays from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Nearly 200 players will receive a stake, with $750 million of it going to the top 36 players based on a formula that weighs career success and cultural popularity, according to The Telegraph. Other notable payouts include $30 million each for Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas , while $75 million is targeted to go to notable retired players.

To receive the money, players would have to continue to remain loyal to the PGA Tour, with the funds vesting over the next eight years, according to The Telegraph. And going forward, the PGA Tour plans to award $100 million per year to the players.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked Wednesday how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

"I think the one thing we've learned in golf over the last two years is there's never enough," said McIlroy, who also said that he's interested in returning to the PGA Tour's policy board, as has been reported and is pending a board vote that could take place this week.

"At the end of the day, it's not quite up to me to just come back on the board," McIlroy said. "There's a process that has to be followed."

The other board members are Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Spieth and Woods.

PGA Tour Enterprises received an investment of up to $3 billion earlier this year from Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners that includes the New York Mets ' Steve Cohen and the Atlanta Falcons ' Arthur Blank.

A week later, Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

A source with knowledge of the Player Equity Program told The Associated Press that the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com, which received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players, reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

The 36 players from the top tier were judged on "career points," such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories, Golf.com reported.

"It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal," Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos obtained by Golf.com.

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

The PGA Tour and LIV are in merger talks, but they have been protracted, with no clear end in sight. Both tours have continued to operate independently, keeping many of the top names in golf from competing against one another for most of the golf calendar -- major tournaments (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship) excepted

"I think I could be helpful to the process," McIlroy said of a formalized unification of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. "But only if people want me involved."

He said he aims to promote compromise while also trying "to help people see the benefits of what unification could do for the game and what it could do for this tour in particular."

"We obviously realize the game is not unified right now for a reason, and there's still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed," McIlroy said. "But I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together."

The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report.

Tiger Woods, PGA Tour Enterprises

PGA Tour Enterprises , the newly formed for-profit entity, is prepared to dole out massive sums of money to reward player loyalty amid the LIV Golf discord.

The PGA Tour struck a deal with Strategic Sports Group worth up to $3 billion three months ago. As part of the fundraising efforts, the Tour will disseminate hundreds of millions of dollars to its membership, per The Telegraph.

Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, will receive the largest sum upwards of $100 million. Rory McIlroy will net a cool $50 million. Other top players like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will earn $30 million.

The Masters - Final Round, Tiger Woods

The entire payout structure to all players has yet to be made public.

Nearly two thirds of the money infused into the company will be handed out via equity shares. However, a safeguard was put in place to avoid players taking the money and then jumping ship for LIV Golf.

Fifty percent of the money will be vested after four years on Tour. Another 25 percent will be added two years after that and all 100 percent will be vested after eight years.

There are a number of factors that determined a players’ worth.

Chief among them are the ‘career points’ and how players have fared through the Player Impact Program (PIP).

The former is a model that looks at career achievements through the lens of longevity. The latter, which was established a couple of years ago to combat the money thrown by LIV at players, takes into account how an individual has helped promote and grow the sport through ticket sales, sponsorships, media consumption and fan engagement.

Understandably, Woods would top the list. He continues to move the needle . One just needs to look at The Masters less than two weeks ago.

Television ratings were initially up as Woods performed well and made the cut for the 24th consecutive appearance, setting a new PGA Tour record . However, after he faltered to historic lows Saturday, ratings plummeted during the weekend.

The Tiger Woods effect is a problem that the PGA Tour and professional golf is still yet to solve.

However, if a deal is ever reached between LIV and the PGA Tour, bringing the best players together might at least stem the tide.

2024 PGA Championship odds: Scottie Scheffler favorite to continue grand slam pursuit, Rory McIlroy near top

Valhalla is set to host this year's pga championship, and the odds board has adjusted since the masters.

The Masters - Preview Day Two

With the PGA Tour's season rolling onward to its second major championship with the 2024 Masters now in the book, the 2024 PGA Championship is just around the corner. Valhalla will serve as host for the first time since 2014 and fourth time in its history as the best golfers in the world convene to begin action on May 16.

You might not believe this, but Scottie Scheffler is the favorite. Scheffler has won four of his last five tournaments -- including the Masters by four shots -- and has lost to just one other golfer since March 1. He has made $16.3 million in that span, third-most in a single season despite the 2024 campaign not having reached its halfway point.

Scheffler is now a stunning 7/2 favorite to win the PGA, which would put him halfway to the 2024 grand slam, a feat nobody has ever accomplished in a single season. In fact, odds for Scheffler to pull it off are now an eye-popping 40-1.

The closest anyone has come to a grand slam in recent years came was 2015 when Jordan Spieth won the first two majors, finished one shot out of a playoff in the third and then finished second in the fourth. It would not be surprising if Scheffler put together a similar major championship season.

2024 PGA Championship odds

  • Scottie Scheffler: 7/2
  • Rory McIlroy: 9-1
  • Jon Rahm: 10-1
  • Brooks Koepka: 16-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 18-1
  • Ludvig Åberg: 18-1

McIlroy won the PGA last time it was at Valhalla, but that was 10 years ago when he won two consecutive majors to collect Nos. 3 and 4 at the age of 25. A lot has happened since then, but McIlroy is still a tremendous player. And while he has not had the season he expected or that his last two seasons portended, he's still a threat here (though 9-1 is short). Koepka is the defending champion as he and Hovland engaged in a great battle last year at Oak Hill. Neither is playing as well this time around. Åberg is probably a better bet at 18-1 than either of those two.

  • Xander Schauffele: 20-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 20-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 22-1
  • Wyndham Clark: 25-1
  • Jordan Spieth: 25-1
  • Bryson DeChambeau: 25-1
  • Will Zalatoris: 25-1
  • Joaquin Niemann: 28-1

The interesting players here are Clark and DeChambeau at 25-1. The latter will be in the field following his best Masters appearance to date; he's seemingly in terrific form. The former is the reigning U.S. Open champion coming off an awesome PGA Tour year behind Scheffler. He is also probably better suited to being a bit of a bomb-and-gouge guy, which is typically how PGAs have been set up in recent years (as opposed to the Masters and Open Championship).

  • Max Homa: 30-1
  • Justin Thomas: 30-1
  • Cameron Smith: 30-1
  • Tony Finau: 35-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 35-1
  • Dustin Johnson: 35-1
  • Rickie Fowler: 40-1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 40-1
  • Cameron Young: 40-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 45-1
  • Adam Scott: 80-1
  • Tiger Woods: 100-1
  • Sergio Garcia: 150-1
  • Phil Mickelson: 150-1

Young intrigues me. An excellent major player, who should be able to decimate this golf course. He was good at the Masters and had a T3 at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. I would not love him at 20-1 ... but at 40-1? Absolutely.
