Phuket Tour Guide

Getting there.

Phuket is an island, though it seems to be a much easier island to access than many others in the world. The vast majority of visitors simply arrive through Phuket International Airport, located around 24 miles from the city center.

It’s usually cheaper to fly into Bangkok, however, so if you’d like to see Bangkok you may just want to allot a day or two there. From there, you can simply take the train from Hua Lamphong Station to Surat Thani and then take a bus to Phuket. You should not miss Bangkok, we would recommend a tour of the city .

Getting Around

Phuket is pretty simple to navigate, thank goodness. You’ll find many varying private and public transportation options. If you’re staying in a resort area, you may just be able to walk around without even thinking of 3 rd -party transportation.

Tuk-Tuk – These are unique to a lot of people, and the experience can be a fun one. However, they’re more ideal for shorter journeys, due to their small size and rather bumpy ride at times. Not only that, but if you’re in a resort area like Patong, they can get kind of pricey. Make sure you agree upon a rate before heading off.

Taxis/Grab – Taxis are pretty much everywhere around Phuket, but particularly in tourist spots and resort areas. Metered taxis are also located right outside the main entrance/exit at the airport. For the first 2 km, fares will be 50 baht and around 8 baht for each km after that. If you’re going long distances, try to settle on a flat rate beforehand.

There is no Uber here, but instead “Grab”. This app-based service is preferred by many visitors as it’s more reliable and gives you more of a sense of security as your ride is tracked and your rate is already settled.

Buses – Known as “songtaews”, these open-air buses are bright blue and easy to spot. The cool thing is they even write the destinations in English if you don’t speak Thai. Just be prepared to be able to flag one down, as there are no established bus stops. Buses operate from around 7 am to 6 pm, and are very affordable.

Motorbike – If you’re brave enough, you may just choose to rent a motorbike. 50-cc Hondas and big bikes are the most common type, and are very cheap. However, you need to know that many drivers operate with complete disregard for the laws and others on the road. Not only that, but if it’s a wet season, roads can become very slippery and difficult to navigate.

Motorbike Taxis – If you are going to hop on a motorbike, you may be better off with a local driving it for you. They are familiar with the way other locals drive, the weather conditions, and so on. This makes it much safer and more reliable. You can find them at moto taxi stands, usually with the drivers wearing red or green vests.

Where to Stay

Phuket may be an island, but it’s one of the more lively islands in Thailand. However, whether you’re going to party or to vacation as a family, there’s something for everyone. Each beach has a different vibe to it!

Phuket Town – If you’re going for the sightseeing and absorbing the culture more than anything, just stay here. You’ll be able to access some of the most popular attractions like the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong Temple, and elephant sanctuary. Not only that, but it’s easy to walk to hotels, temples, markets, and restaurants.

Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon – If your main priority is seeing the amazing beaches, then stay in any of these areas. Patong is one of the main beaches, but is usually very overcrowded while many others are uncomfortable and not quite as beautiful.

However, these 3 are all located inside a national park. They have beautiful white sands, gorgeous views, and have a more private feel to them. Nai Yang is notorious for being so close to the airport runway that you feel like you could almost reach out and touch the airplanes! Kata is another honorable mention, with some of the best swimming on the island.

Bang Tao – Bang Tao is perfect if you are a water sport kind of person. That could mean jet-skiing, going out on a speedboat, parasailing, etcetera. If you’re into receiving top-notch spa treatments, Bang Tao is also the way to go. If you’re feeling sore, you can’t skip receiving a massage here.

Patong – Patong is the center of nightlife and all the hustle-and-bustle of Phuket. You’ll find clubs bumping with loud music, all kinds of “entertainment complexes”, and extravagant shows. If you’re coming with the entire family, you may want to steer clear of staying in this area, though.

Kata Yai, Kata Noi – Are you a serious foodie? Then you should be staying in either of these areas. You’ll find everything from world-class bistros to makeshift stalls at the beach serving up delicious dishes. Whatever you’re looking for as far as food goes, you’ll find it here.

Restaurants and Eating Out

As we just mentioned, Phuket has a variety of tasty food options and there really is something for everyone. With that being said, we recommend trying both formal restaurants and food stalls for best results.

One Chun Café and Restaurant – Located in Old Town, this restaurant is consistently rated as one of the best on the island. With a wide variety of dishes (try the crab yellow curry), it has a very vintage feel with brick walls and all kinds of old clocks and TV sets!

Raya – Okay, so this is from the same owners as One Chun, but it just can’t be left out! Known for their classic local dishes like moo hong or slow-cooked pork belly stew, they really take their time in making sure each dish is served to perfection. It’s located right around the corner from One Chun, too!

Ko Ang Seafood – This place has been around a long time, and is known for being one of the best seafood spots in Old Town. You’ll find everything from popular dishes to exotic options like red ant eggs or horseshoe crab.

Lock Tien Food Court – If you go to Phuket, you have to make a visit to Lock Tien. It’s been serving up delicious food for over 50 years to locals and tourists, alike. Located on the corner of Dibuk and Yoawarat, you can try a delicious traditional dinner like por pia, or a cool dessert like oh aew. O-aew is a Thai shaved ice dessert topped with many ingredients like red bean, grass jelly, and of course o-aew: a type of jelly made with banana and herbs.

Kwong Shop Seafood – Here’s another prime seafood spot, and if you’re in Kata Beach, we highly recommend stopping by. Crab curry, hot pot, steamed squid, entire fish – they have it all and it’s super cheap for the quality and quantity received.

Sugar & Spice – This place melds western dishes with Thai favorites like pad Thai, pineapple rice, and som tam. It’s not all that exciting, but it’s a good option if you or another in your group isn’t that adventurous with food.

Nightlife and Entertainment

  • Soi Bangla Road – This place goes crazy after the sun sets! You’ll find all kinds of lavish clubs to sophisticated lounges and everything in-between.
  • Wassa Homemade – Located right on the coast, this is a wonderful date night spot if you’re looking for chill music, great conversation, and excellent cocktails. The views are unbeatable, and the service is fantastic.
  • Seductino Nightclub – This trendy spot is a massive club, with famous DJs every night.
  • Simon Cabaret – One of the most popular places in Phuket, it has great digital sound and visual effects.
  • Siam Niramit – This is undoubtedly one of the most unique shows on the island, and has an almost Vegas-esque feel to it. If you’re bringing the whole family along, this is one of the top recommendations. Complete with over 100 performers, glamorous costumes, and elaborate sets, there’s never a dull moment.
  • Boat Bar – This is a fun place with friendly staff, cool decorations, great music, cabaret some nights, and more.
  • Kee Sky Lounge – This rooftop bar is just steps away from Bangla Walking Street. The rooftop is designed to look like a cruise ship deck, and is always fun with great cocktails and views of the Andaman Sea.
  • Kudo Beach Club – Okay, so this club does open at 10 am, but it goes until midnight so you always have a party to go to!

Generally speaking, Phuket is quite warm throughout the entire year. Temperatures range from around 77 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, and seasons are pretty much just divided into the “rainy season” and “dry season”. These periods depend on the tropical monsoon.

Dry season starts in December, lasting until around March. You’ll see clear skies, calm waters, and light breezes with temperatures in the high 70s, typically. As you can imagine, this attracts a lot of tourists and is known as the high season.

Rainy season starts in June and lasts until October. This is when the monsoon comes in, with intense winds, lots of rain, with hot and humid weather. It’s not quite as pleasant, considering many times you won’t be able to be out on the water. Going to the beach may result in sand blowing all over, and raining you out.

Attractions

Kata Noi Beach – Phuket has a ton of great beaches, but Kata Noi remains one of our favorites. It’s small in size but huge in beauty. Take a walk along the pristine sand while just enjoying the view or taking a swim in the water.

Chalong Bay Rum Distillery – If you’re a rum fan, you’ll love learning about how it is produced. Not to mention, after the tour you get to participate in a cocktail workshop and bar, where you’ll learn how to make various cocktails that include the house rum.

Big Buddha – This is an absolutely massive marble Buddha statue, at almost 150 feet tall! While the Buddha alone is a great motive for heading there, you also get some of the best panoramic views of the island from the top of the hill.

Nai Harn Beach – This is one of the most popular beaches, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue water. There are many delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend grabbing a bite to eat and then coming to sit under the shade of a large tree on the beach.

Karon Viewpoint – Right next to Kata Noi is Karon Viewpoint, which offers some of the best lookout points on the whole island.

Phuket Town Weekend Night Market – The locals call it “Maka Market”, and is the place to be at night on the weekends! It’s crowded with tourists and locals, yes, but there are so many delicious foods and fun items to purchase and look at here.

Wat Chalong and Phuket Temples – Wat Chalong is one of the most important temples in Phuket, with incredible intricacy and a fascinating history. It’s gorgeous from a distance, but head closer and you’ll see the innumerable pieces of glittering glass.

Bangla Road – It’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, so prepare yourself for that! But if you are ready for adventure and have a sense of humor, you’ll be just fine.

Phang Nga Bay – If you have ever seen the James Bond movie, The Man With The Golden Gun you will recognize it. The “ James Bond Islands ” are a popular tourist attraction.

  • Don’t drink the tap water. Just drink bottled water, and make sure that the bottle is sealed. Ice is made with clean water, and you don’t have to worry about it.
  • Bring mosquito repellent or purchase some right when you arrive. Dengue and malaria aren’t that common, but it’s still annoying to be itching the entire time.
  • When at temples, you need to be respectful. Cover your shoulders and legs at least to the knee. Remove shoes and hat before entering any temple.
  • Be respectful of any image of Buddha. Buying statues and/or getting Buddhist tattoos if you aren’t Buddhist is not only considered very disrespectful, but in some cases, even illegal!
  • Public criticism of Thai royalty is illegal, and if the national anthem is played in public or even before a movie in the theater, you should stand.

Thailand Awaits

Plan your own Day trip from Phuket to Phi Phi

Are you trying to plan a day trip to Phi Phi Island from Phuket and confused about all the options? Well, our southern Thailand expert, Rich has you covered. Read on for his tips for planning a trip from Phuket to Phi Phi island.

Let’s Start With Some Phi Phi Basics…

When is the best time to visit phi phi island, public ferry options, speedboat trips to phi phi island, organized phi phi island tours, sightseeing on koh phi phi don, two quality phi phi island tours, our final thoughts….

This page contains affiliate links. Please see our  disclosure policy  for more details.

Phi Phi has been on the tip of every traveler’s tongue since the turn of the millennium, when Alex Garland’s book, The Beach , was adapted into a blockbuster movie. Most visitors’ wish-lists of places to visit include a stop at “the beach.” And with good reason. Maya Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but Phi Phi has much more to offer than just ticking off one box on an itinerary. If you are holidaying in Phuket, Phi Phi is reachable as a day trip, but with so many options for visiting, how do you decide which operator to book your trip with?

Firstly, let’s deal with the geography and clear up any confusion. Phi Phi is not one island. It’s a group of islands— the Phi Phi archipelago —with the main two islands being Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Ley.

phuket to phi phi island tours

There is no “Koh Phi Phi” (“koh” is the Thai word for “island”), although that phrase is commonly used to refer to Koh Phi Phi Don, as this is the island with the hotels, resorts, and bars.

The Thai word “ley” means “empty”—Koh Phi Phi Ley has no buildings on it, save a ranger station.

phuket to phi phi island tours

There are a total of six islands in the Phi Phi Islands group, with Bida Nok, Bida Nai, Koh Yung, and Bamboo Island being the others.

phuket to phi phi island tours

This group of islands is part of Hat Nopparat Thara-Ko Phi Phi National Park within Krabi province, and lies about forty kilometers southeast of Phuket – halfway between Phuket and Koh Lanta.

The Phi Phi Islands are a year-round destination, but there are times of the year that will help ensure your Phi Phi experience is everything you dreamed it would be.

November – May: The west coast of Thailand’s high season and best weather are between November and May each year. At this time of the year, the wind blows off-shore, flattening out the Andaman Sea’s waves and swells, affording a smooth passage for the ferries and speedboats bound for the Phi Phi Islands. There is very little rainfall during this time of year too, so you are pretty much guaranteed great sea conditions, blue skies and bright sunshine.

The downside of visiting during peak season will be the crowds. But that’s a minor inconvenience – flat, clear seas and bright sunshine will be your reward during this period.

One thing to be careful of if visiting during the quieter months is whether or not the famous Maya Bay – the home of The Beach – is open to tourists.

Amazing Maya Bay on Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

In recent years, the national park authorities have been restricting access to Maya Bay for a few months during low season to allow the corals and the beach to have a rest from the negative effects of mass tourism. If access to the beach is restricted, you will still be able to see ‘the beach’, but you will not be allowed onto the sand—you can admire it from your boat from inside the bay area.

Maya Bay is closed to visitors from 1st August until 31 September each year

June – October: During the low season, the weather can also be beautiful during the daytime, with the wind and rain arriving in the late afternoon. If you check your weather apps, you may notice they predict thunder storms every day. There will not be thunder storms every day – the apps are overly cautious. The best way to check the weather at this time of the year is to ask the locals what they think the forecast will be for the next few days.

In terms of the weather during the low season, it can get windy at times, meaning bigger waves and a bumpier ride across the Andaman Sea.

If you suffer from seasickness, high season is the best time to visit Phi Phi. The journey is across the open sea, which can be rough in low season.

A seasickness tablet may help, but these tablets take time and need to be taken an hour or two before the boat leaves to be most effective. If you think you need one, pop to your nearest pharmacy the evening before, and then take the tablet when you wake up. For those who get seasick easily, the faster speedboat option may be worth considering in high season when the seas are flat.

One option for visiting Phi Phi for a day from Phuket is the D.I.Y option; book yourself a return ticket on one of the large public ferries.

The advantage with this option is that you will have more freedom to explore. The downside will be if you want to hire a longtail to visit Monkey Beach, for example, you will need to negotiate with the driver yourself.

Phi Phi Cruiser is one of the ferry companies to check out. You can simply buy a return ticket, but make sure the arrival point on Phi Phi Don is Ton Sai Pier, rather than the quieter Laemtong Beach Pier to the north of Phi Phi Don.

The pier at Laemtong serves the Zeavola Resort in the north of the island, and the main part of the island will be inaccessible unless you hire a longtail boat.

With Phi Phi Cruiser, you will be picked up from your hotel in Phuket at around 8:00am and transferred to Rassada pier, near Phuket Town . The journey across to Phi Phi Don will take around two hours, then you will have four hours on the island to explore, before the return ferry leaves Phi Phi at 3:00pm.

There are also VIP and Deluxe options with Phi Phi Cruiser . With these options you can stay on board and be taken around Phi Phi Ley and Maya Bay, with snorkeling opportunities along the way. Snorkeling equipment use is included in these packages.

The larger, public ferries are the best option if you are traveling with kids. The boats are spacious and comfortable, and you can walk around to stretch your legs, or grab a coffee and snacks from one of the kiosks and relax out on the deck in the sun.

Another option would be to join a speedboat crossing to Koh Phi Phi Don from Rassada Pier. Bundhaya Speedboat is one of the companies offering this service.

Departure time from Phuket is 8:30am, and you should arrive in Phi Phi by 9:30am. You will then have until 1:30pm to explore the island before heading back to the pier for the return crossing.

Be aware that upon arrival at Ton Sai Pier, you will have to pay a small charge of 20 baht per person to enter Koh Phi Phi Don.

If you want to take a tour from Phuket, then as mentioned already, the big public ferries offer VIP and Deluxe tickets, which incorporate a snorkeling tour around Phi Phi Ley and Maya Bay.

There are also speedboat-tour companies that include the crossings, lunch, soft drinks, and the use of life jackets, masks, snorkels, and fins.

These organized tours usually include a stop at:

  • Monkey Beach – time to walk, swim or meet the monkeys
  • a snorkeling spot or two, depending on the ocean conditions, the snorkeling spots will usually be Viking Cave or Pileh Lagoon.
  • include a buffet-style lunch on the island of Phi Phi Don.
  • After a delicious lunch, you will have around an hour to explore Ton Sai before heading back to the speedboat to take in a couple more sights before returning to Phuket.

Snorkeling Spots on organised cruises

Edible birds’ nests are cultivated inside Viking Cave, and you will not be permitted to enter the cave itself, but you will be in the water, snorkeling just below the cave’s entrance with the colorful tropical fish.

phuket to phi phi island tours

Pileh Lagoon is a hundred meters or farther along the coast of Phi Phi Ley. This area has some protection from the waves and is a beautiful and tranquil spot to snorkel. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles munching on the coral below.

You may stop at another beach for snorkeling and swimming in the crystal-clear water before completing the journey back to Phuket.

Back at Rassada Pier, the tour company will have vehicles waiting to take you back to your hotel.

Backpackers and independent travelers may prefer the options that include the chance to explore Phi Phi Don on their own volition. Buying a return ticket on a public ferry is the cheapest option and will give you around four hours to explore. After paying the 20-baht Phi Phi admission charge at the pier, you will be free to wander before getting back to the pier in time for your return journey to Phuket. So, what is there to do in Ton Sai?

  • Monkey Beach

One popular place to check out is Monkey Beach. This is a very small white-sand beach under the limestone cliffs of Ton Sai, but you are not here for the powdery-soft sand. The big draw here is the monkeys. If you are not that keen on monkeys, you can watch them from the comfort of the boat. If you go to shore to see them, keep your belongings secure. These macaques are not shy!

Monkey Beach Phi Phi

When you are short on time on Phi Phi, the best way to get out to see them is via a longtail boat private charter. There are plenty of longtail drivers hanging around at the pier, especially when a ferry is due to arrive.

Top tip : Your best bet is to walk off the pier, ignore all the touts vying for your business, and grab a quick coffee or an ice-cold Chang at one of the cafes overlooking the bay. By the time you have finished your coffee, the melee at the pier will have died down, and you can now barter for a longtail in a more civilized fashion.

If you have bought a ticket-only trip to the Phi Phi Islands and you want to visit The Beach at Maya, then your only option will be a longtail. You may also be able to combine this with a stop at Monkey Beach.

Make sure you explain to the longtail driver that you are returning to Phuket that afternoon, and maybe show him the ticket so he knows when you need to be back at Ton Sai Pier.

phuket to phi phi island tours

To get to feel the soft white sand of Maya Bay between your toes, you will need to pay an entrance fee. The entrance to Maya Bay on foot is via Loh Samah Bay in the south of Phi Phi Ley. After paying, there’s a short walk through the rocks and down onto the stunning Maya Bay beach.

Phi Phi Viewpoint

A short hike up to the viewpoint is the order of the day for a stunning panorama over Koh Phi Phi Don’s twin-bay area. From the pier in Ton Sai Bay, you need to walk through the village towards the eastern end of Loh Dalum Beach to pick up the trail to the viewpoint.

Phi-Phi island, Krabi Province, Thailand

Make sure you stock up on drinking water as you pass by the shops, as the walk up will be hot and sweaty. There is a café at the top for refreshments, and more importantly, a spectacular view down across the twin bays of Ton Sai and Loh Dalum.

Ton Sai Bay can be very busy in the peak season. The narrow alleys, or ‘sois’ in the Thai language, can be packed with people ambling around the shops and restaurants. If you want to find a more peaceful spot on the island, you can make the short walk over to Long Beach.

It’s about a twenty-minute walk along the opposite side of Ton Sai Bay to Monkey Beach.

The walk is pleasant, and Long Beach at the end is worth the trip. This peaceful beach, with its soft sand, is much quieter than the main beaches near Ton Sai. If you have your own mask and snorkel, you can try your luck at spotting some black-tipped reef sharks cruising around the rocks near the far end of the beach.

The sharks are more active at dawn or dusk, but you can still see them during the daytime if you are lucky. These are small, shy sharks, and there is nothing to worry about.

We recommend booking your tour in advance especially in peak season. We like using Get Your Guide because they offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. We have had to use this a couple of times and its been a very simple procedure.

Phi Phi Islands Day-Trip by Speed Catamaran

This day tour see you travel from Chalong Pier near Phuket Town aboard a luxury catamaran.

The boat has comfortable seating and plenty of space on deck which reduces the change of feeling sea sick. Snacks and drinks on board will keep you busy as you make your way to Phi Phi Le for your first stop.

Phi Phi Island Tour From Phuket

While six islands make up this region, we centre our Phi Phi Islands adventure on the two main islands that are world-famous for their natural beauty and provide maximum value for money. Why waste valuable time on the islands that don’t provide the most eye-opening experience? It is, for this reason, that we journey to Phi Phi Don, the largest island, and a destination that provides incredible swimming, diving, and snorkelling opportunities in the shadows of some of the most spectacular surroundings you’re likely to witness.

In addition to Phi Phi Don, we focus our attention on Phi Phi Leh, the smaller of the two main islands, and home to Maya Bay. This cosy bay is world-famous for its serene beauty and has recently reopened and is finally welcoming back crowds following a lengthy period of closure.

During our Phi Phi Island Tour, you will have plenty of opportunities to dive into the idyllic turquoise waters of the islands as well as we put the anchor down and allow you to get maximum value for your once-in-a-lifetime experience. So don’t delay, join us on the most intimate Phi Phi Island tour. Book in advance via our website to ensure you get your seat!

  • Discover the iconic Phi Phi Islands away from the crowds

  • Beat the rush of visitors to the spectacular Maya Bay

Small Group Tours, Beat the Crowds

Simba operates the lowest passenger numbers of all operators to Phi Phi Islands with an average of 14 passengers and max 18 Adults. Our tours are planned specifically to avoid the large crowds in the National Parks.

Phi Phi Island Tour’s first glimpse of magic - Maya Bay

Phi Phi Maya Bay has been a “must see location” for the majority of Thailand tourists for decades and as such, suffered from its overuse. Thankfully the National Park prohibited from 2018 to the end of 2021, any boat from dropping anchor in the bay and alighting at the beach, to allow the gorgeous coral island treasures, wildlife and environment time to recover. Fully recovered, Maya Bay is now open for business once more and keen to show off its beauty to a whole new audience.

At Simba, you will be one of the first boats to arrive at this awe-inspiring bay to enjoy placing the first footprints of the day into its fine white sand beach.  Breakfast will be served here on the beach.

The Phi Phi Island tour’s emerald crown, Pileh Lagoon - Tide Dependent

Our next port of call on our sunrise tour is the gorgeous Pileh Lagoon (tide-dependent). Another highly popular tourist destination and usually busy but don’t despair. Thanks to our early start time, while most crowds are headed to Maya Bay we are exiting on our way to beat the crowds to Pileh Lagoon.

It is a wonderful attraction, an emerald green lagoon surrounded by high limestone cliffs on 3 sides, and one of the world’s most gorgeous natural swimming pools. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the extremely spectacular view of the emerald waters of the islands merging with the caves and the blue clear horizon as the speedboat coasts into the Lagoon.

Experience the Phi Phi Islands from underwater - 1st Snorkeling Stop

It is now time to explore the magical underwater world of Phi Phi Islands with some swimming and snorkeling during our speed boat tour. Our experienced staff will anchor up in an area where marine life waits to greet you.

We supply all your snorkeling equipment including fins and flotation aids such as life jackets and swim noodles. The staff are always there (in and out of the speedboat) ready to help any first-timers with encouragement, and advice when needed.

You are guaranteed to see a lot of friendly fishes who are more than happy to share their waters with you and, if you are lucky, we are sometimes visited by dolphins during our snorkeling stops.

Phi Phi Islands have their secrets - Macaque Monkeys and the Viking Cave

Our Last Stop on the Phi Phi Leh leg of the tour is to the mysterious Viking Cave. This limestone cave is one of the most notable sites on the island and is one of the most requested tourist attractions from visitors.

The Viking Cave possesses unique drawings on the Southern and Eastern walls, and this naturally formed seaside cave appears out of place (for all the right reasons) at the foot of a limestone cliff. Guests will also be able to observe swifts’ nests in their hundreds. While the site is spectacular and is sure to amaze, please be aware that we are unable to walk into the cave due to local regulations.

While on this stop we will also take the time to stop by one of the local beaches for a viewing of the monkey troops. For our own safety, the team insists we all stay on the boat whilst viewing these cute Long-tailed Macaques. For animal lovers, this is one of the most memorable moments that takes place during the tour.

Islands and Crystal Waters - 2nd Snorkeling Stop

It’s time to head on to make our second snorkeling stop. This time we’ll try to find a spot that offers different marine life to what was previously seen. You can choose to say hello to the curious fish again with your second snorkeling adventure, take an extended swim or simply relax on the boat and enjoy the sunshine. We are flexible with our speedboat tour itinerary to ensure that our Phuket customers have the best day possible.

It is at this stage of the day that our guests are starting to get very excited about all that they’ve seen and all that is still to come. This is the prime opportunity for some memorable photos with your fellow tour guests as we saviour the surrounding landscape that we are fortunate enough to be gazing upon.

Tours demand relaxation time - Bamboo Beach or Koh Rang Yai

Our  penultimate stop on your Phi Phi Islands tour is selected dependant on the conditions of the day and our crew choose between one of two idyllic  tropical islands. Here, you can swim, bathe, relax and take in the sights. Both are true paradise islands with crystal clear waters, picturesque palm trees, and soft white sand.

Take your time to enjoy the island’s beauty at one of the most stunning beaches in the world and end your day the right way.

A taste of the Phi Phi Islands - Lunch time

Finish your trip to Phi Phi with a well-deserved lunch at our popular pool club restaurant. Many travelers have enjoyed the scrumptious thai-style lunch with all the local flavours of the island.

You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your culinary palette in one of the most beautiful pool club settings imaginable and will provide all the nourishment you need after a long day undertaking sea activities.

A lagoon swim, followed by two snorkeling stops where you'll enjoy the sights of beautiful corals, swarms of reef life including clown fish, reef sharks, parrot fish and a myriad of other wonderful little creatures that bless our reefs.

Pickup from your hotel from all over Phuket at approximately 5am for a 6am DEPARTURE. We will return you to your hotel at approximately 3pm. For areas outside of Phuket, a cost per vehicle applies depending on how far from Phuket. We will advise of the outside Phuket fee when the booking is received.

On arrival at our office enjoy some light breakfast snacks and coffee. On tour all your culinary needs are provided by us. A yummy breakfast on the beach, snacks and soft refreshments throughout the day, and finally an authentic Thai lunch at a stunning, pool club restaurant.

Accident insurance is provided to ensure a worry free day out on the water, enjoying a wonderful day of water activities with peace of mind knowing any medical mishaps will be dealt with at no extra costs to you.

At Simba, provided enough notice is given, we are happy to provide an alternative tour date or to provide a full refund if your plans change. Please read through our policy guidelines to gain all the relevant information regarding cancellations.

About the Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are the jewel of the Andaman Sea.

Scattered across the Gulf of Thailand, it’s made up of two main islands; Koh Phi Phi Leh and Koh Phi Phi Don, with other smaller islands dotted around, mostly uninhabited.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island, and the only one with a small town on it. It has a very chill laid-back vibe, and it’s one of the main backpacker destinations for all travellers to Thailand.

Not far from Koh Phi Phi Don, you will find Koh Phi Phi Leh, a beautiful island that’s long enticed travellers, thanks to its gorgeous coral reefs, imposing limestone cliffs and the famous Maya Bay.

Even though they’re technically part of Krabi, most people visit Phi Phi as part of their  Phuket itinerary , as it’s fairly close.

Many travellers visit Phi Phi on a day trip, and if that’s your plan too, you’ve come to the right place!

How to get to Phi Phi Island

First of all, it’s not really possible to do the Phi Phi day trip independently. The only real way to do it is to hop on a tour, either from Phuket or Krabi, depending on where you’re staying.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Phuket

The Phi Phi Island day tour from Phuket is mostly done by speedboat.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken across the sea to various different sights around the Phi Phi Islands. Tours may include a buffet lunch, mask and snorkel, and the national park fee.

Technically speaking, from Phuket, there are also public ferries, which could make a Phi Phi island day tour (sort of) possible without joining a tour.

However, the ferry takes around two hours, but I would say that the ferry times are a little bit inconvenient if you’re just going for the day.

You can check ferry times here . When I visited Phi Phi, the ferries were leaving Phuket around 10AM, arriving in Phi Phi around 12PM. The latest ferry back from Koh Phi Phi Don was then around 3PM.

My dad taking in the view of Maya Bay from the sea from the prow of our speedboat

That doesn’t give you much time to explore these beautiful islands. It’s better to join a tour like this one , which has better timings, leaving earlier in the morning and coming back later in the afternoon.

I have linked below some of the best tours to Phi Phi Island from Phuket.

Phuket: Maya, Phi Phi, and Bamboo Island with Buffet Lunch : This is the classic Phi Phi Island day tour from Phuket. It includes a buffet lunch, a visit to Viking Cave and a snorkel at Bamboo Island.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi

Getting to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi is the same as from Phuket. You can either take the ferry (which I don’t recommend for a day trip), or join a speedboat tour.

The ferries from Krabi take around 90 minutes to reach the Phi Phi islands along the 40-kilometre crossing.

Similarly to the ferries from Phuket, the timings aren’t convenient for a day trip, as they don’t leave you with much free time there.

Instead, check out one of these speedboat tours. These tours are one of the most popular ways to see the islands, ticking off all the main sights on a single full-day tour.

It involves being up bright and early at your accommodation in Krabi, before being taken to Railay Beach . From there you’ll hop on the speedboat and be whisked around the islands.

This sort of trip includes an English-speaking guide, lunch, and snorkel equipment.

Note that many tours from Krabi don’t include the entrance fee to the national park (400 THB), which must be paid at the entrance to the park in Koh Phi Phi Leh.

What does a Phi Phi Island day tour include?

Regardless of whether Phi Phi island tour sets off from Krabi or Phuket, they tend to include many similarities.

From the mode of transport (either a longtail boat or a speedboat) to the sights you’ll see along the way, it will basically be the same tour.

Therefore, don’t let the starting point of your day trip influence your Thailand itinerary , as you will visit all of the beautiful must-see sights of Phi Phi both if you visit from Krabi or from Phuket.

There are some differences however, as a Phi Phi island day trip cost can vary massively depending on the package. If you choose a private boat over a group tour, small group versus large tour, any extra stops and so on.

Mostly though, you’ll be whisked away to the following big-hitter destinations in this beautiful archipelago.

Visit Maya Bay

Pretty much every single Koh Phi Phi day trip will include a visit to Maya Bay . This iconic spot was made famous as a filming location in The Beach , the 2000 travel movie starring Leonardo diCaprio.

With a beach backed by soaring cliffs, you can easily see why the hidden cove has become fairly busy today. Maya Bay was actually closed for four years, to allow it to recover from the effects of over tourism.

Today, Maya Bay is open once again, but boats can no longer dock inside it and you’re not allowed to swim in the water. You can only get in up to knee-length water for pictures.

However, don’t let that deter you, as it’s still a truly stunning spot. Plus, you’ll be able to snorkel and swim in other stops of your Phi Phi Islands day trip.

The beach itself is a 100-metre-long stretch of white sandy beach, which is an idyllic place to lounge around for a while soaking up the surroundings.

Snorkel in Phi Leh Lagoon

After Maya Bay, most tours will head over to another of the area’s beautiful lagoons; Phi Leh Lagoon, also located on Koh Phi Phi Ley.

Cutting into the shape of the island on its eastern side, this 600-metre-long bay is an integral part of tours in the area and, well, it’s not hard to see why: it’s a stunner.

The lagoon is centred in front of a 100-metre-high limestone cliffs, while the water itself is emerald and translucent.

This makes for excellent conditions for snorkelling (it’s one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots in Thailand after all!), which is exactly what people do when the tour boats rock up here.

Snorkelling in Pileh Lagoon, in the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand - one of the highlights of any day tour to Phi Phi Island

Explore Viking Cave

Viking Cave is around half an hour on the boat from Phi Leh Lagoon. It’s most famous as a collection point for the natural bounty that are swallow’s nests — the main ingredient for Chinese delicacy bird’s nest soup.

You’re not allowed up in the cave where the locals climb up to collect the nests, but you can see them ascending up the cliffs while you’re floating around in the boat below; the tour boat usually makes sure to slow down so you can glimpse the spectacle.

Interestingly the cave doesn’t get its name from Vikings, but instead from some 400-year-old graffiti of Chinese fishing junk.

See the monkeys at Monkey Beach

As the name suggests, this large beach is home to monkeys. You will se monkeys in the trees that line the beach, and they often come down to the sand as they know tourists often have food on them.

Other than the monkeys, which can be a little bit pesky if you’re not careful, it’s a beautiful spot framed by turquoise seas and verdant cliffs, with soft, silky sand to dig your toes into.

Here you can relax for a while, see the monkeys in this unique setting and go for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Monkey Bay.

Don’t leave your bags unattended, as the monkeys will open them to see if you have food inside!

Chill at Bamboo Island

Also called Koh Pai, Bamboo Island sits to the northeast of the Phi Phi archipelago.

It’s a tiny island (only 700 metres long), but size doesn’t matter: this heart-shaped island is absolutely beautiful, featuring a wide beach that slopes gently into the sparkling sea.

There’s not much here, only a coral reef out to sea and a small beach eatery, but who cares? It’s gorgeous.

Snorkelling is great here since the water is nice, warm and perfectly crystal clear (and also because of the coral, obviously).

Kayak to hidden coves and beaches

This isn’t an option on all Phi Phi island tours, but sometimes the bigger boats will bring kayaks with them.

This means you’ll get to kayak to little secret coves and hidden beaches when the boat drops anchor in one of more of the stunning locations I listed above.

Best Phi Phi Islands tours

Now that you know what’s on offer, you’re probably wondering about what Phi Phi Island tour you should choose.

Whether you’re looking for Phuket day trips to Phi Phi, or if you’re more interested in Phi Phi island tours from Krabi, take note of these top day trips from both destinations for your upcoming vacation…

Phuket: Maya, Phi Phi, and Bamboo Island with Buffet Lunch

This is the classic Phi Phi island day trip from Phuket — and it has a ton of glowing reviews.

Starting from your accommodation in Phuket, you’ll be taken to all the main sites, including the famous Maya Bay, Pileh Cove, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Phi Phi Don Island (for lunch; included), Nui Bay and Bamboo Island.

You’ll then return to Phuket on the speed boat in time for dinner.

From Krabi: Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Day Tour

This day trip is the same classic Phi Phi island tour as above, with the difference that it sets off from Krabi.

Like many, this is a Phi Phi island tour by speedboat and it will see you zipping across the sea on an adventure around the archipelago.

Highlights include swimming and snorkelling at Bamboo Island (it’s really stunning), passing by the interesting Viking Cave, swimming in Maya Bay, and snorkelling at Phi Leh Lagoon. It also includes lunch.

From Phi Phi: Full-Day Sunset Long Tail Boat Tour

This small group tour of the Phi Phi islands is a great option for anybody who feels like staying in the Phi Phi Islands overnight.

Unlike most tours, it’s done via a traditional longtail boat instead of a speedboat, and it makes eight stops along the way. You’ll also get to see the sunset on this tour, which is another bonus.

However it starts in Koh Phi Phi Don, not from the bigger Phuket or Maya Bay harbours. As such, it’s only suited for those who plan to take the ferry to Phi Phi, stay overnight and then join a boat tour the next day.

From Phuket Or Khao Lak: Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour

This early bird tour is a great option if you want to avoid the crowds in Maya Beach, possibly making it the best Phi Phi Island tour for anybody who wants to see pristine beaches without the other tourists.

You also get to climb to an amazing viewpoint on Phi Phi Don — and that’s before you’ve even stopped for breakfast!

There’s also a picnic lunch involved later on in the day, and plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling, and lounging around. Plus, the price of this Phi Phi islands tour makes it a good value for money.

Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch

Also leaving early in the day to help you avoid crowds, this tour is an interesting option since it goes from Krabi and also includes the Krabi four islands tour.

That’s what makes it a bit different from the other Phi Phi tours, mainly because it includes some islands that you wouldn’t otherwise see on the main tours.

There’s also the bonus of a pretty decent Thai buffet at a hotel restaurant for lunch.

Is a Phi Phi island day trip worth it?

Yes and no… While it’s a beautiful archipelago — I mean, obviously it is — with some iconic and pretty unique sights like Maya Bay, it is also super busy and overly touristy.

There are other beautiful islands to visit in Thailand. Many, many more in fact (for example Koh Lipe , the Surin Islands or Similan Islands ) that are far less touristy than Phi Phi which you could visit.

But if you’re dead set on visiting Phi Phi island (I don’t blame you, it was a must on my travel bucket list too), I would recommend going there via ferry and trying to spend at least one night there.

This means you’ll be able to enjoy the chill town and see it after the daytrippers leave, and then for something special maybe go to Maya Bay for a super early bird tour and see it without the huge crowds.

I visited the Phi Phi Islands three times, once on a private boat tour from Krabi, and twice staying overnight. The two times I stayed overnight were much more enjoyable. If you do opt for a day trip, try a private tour if you can.

The Phi Phi Islands are very touristy, but there’s no denying they’re beautiful and definitely worth visiting. Just make sure you spend at least a night there, and see everything they have to offer, instead of just visiting on a day trip.

Where to stay for your Phi Phi day trip

For a Phi Phi Island day trip, you can either stay in Krabi or Phuket. Personally, I much preferred Krabi as it’s more laid-back than Phuket, and it’s also shorter boat trip to the Phi Phi archipelago.

I have listed below some of the best places to stay for every budget.

Budget: Railay Viewpoint Resort   – This budget option is great for those who want spacious rooms and a pool with view for an affordable price. It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road of Railay Beach.

Mid-range: Railay Princess Resort & Spa   – This is where we stayed for a week and really enjoyed it. The property is clean, the rooms spacious, it offers a lovely breakfast buffet, has a great pool with view and is in an easy position to reach close to East Railay Pier. What more could you need?

Luxury: Rayavadee   – If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to do so! Located in Phra Nang Beach (the only hotel there) this luxury property offers gorgeous private villas nestled in nature.

I didn’t personally love Phuket, but it’s one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand for a reason.

If you’re planning lots of day trips in the Gulf of Thailand, you should stay on the Eastern side of Phuket, so you don’t have to drive as much within Phuket to get to the harbour and boat trips.

Here are some great places to stay in Phuket for every budget.

Budget: Bodega Phuket Party Hostel   – I haven’t stayed here personally, but if you’re in a party mood, I’ve heard this hostel is the place to be in Phuket.

Click here to book your stay in a hostel in Phuket!

Mid-range: The Crib Patong  – I stayed here on my second trip to Phuket. It’s a really cute boutique hotel that was close to the nightlife of Bangla Road, but just far enough that the noise wasn’t annoying at night.

Check the latest prices and availability at The Crib Patong here!

Luxury: Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Karon Beach – I stayed here on my first trip to Phuket. Located right on the beach and away from the chaos of Patong, it’s the perfect place if you’re looking for a fancy stay.

In Koh Phi Phi Don

I know this article is about doing a day trip to Phi Phi, but as I already said, I really think you should spend at least one night there. If you choose to do so, here are some great places to stay in Phi Phi Don for every budget.

Budget:  Sweet Dee Hostel   – Phi Phi is a bit of a party destination, so if that’s what you’re looking for, a hostel like this is a great place to be. They only offer dorms with lockers, and are centrally located in Phi Phi.

Click here to book your stay at Sweet Dee Hostel in Phi Phi!

Mid-range: Papaya Phi Phi Resort  – This is where I stayed on my second trip to the Phi Phi Islands. It’s not particularly fancy, but has a lovely view, and all the rooms have small balconies where you will be served breakfast in the morning.

Check out the latest prices and availability at Papaya Phi Phi Resort

Luxury: Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort   – I stayed here on my first trip to Phi Phi and can honestly say it’s great. It’s a 10-minute walk from the harbour, in a quieter part of the island, with a great pool and view.

Check out the  availability & prices at Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort

What to pack for your day tour to Phi Phi Island

For a full breakdown of what you should pack for Thailand, check out my Thailand packing list . Here I just included a few essentials that you will need for visiting the Phi Phi Islands.

Fast drying towel – There’s a lot of swimming and lounging on beaches involved in these day trips, so make sure to have one of these! I love these towels because they are quick to dry and they don’t take up much space.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Power bank – You don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a gorgeous photo of that beautiful Phi Phi Island landscape!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry during the boat trip.

Final thoughts on doing a Phi Phi Island tour by speedboat

There you have it, the ultimate guide to doing a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands! Have you been to Koh Phi Phi before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

The islands of the Phi Phi archipelago are amongst the most famous islands in Thailand, and that means they can get incredibly busy. As such, I personally think you’re better off staying in Phi Phi overnight, instead of just a day trip.

That will give you time to properly enjoy these islands, and visit popular places like Maya Bay before the day-trippers arrive.

If your Thailand itinerary doesn’t allow for an overnight stay, and you’re set on a day trip, don’t worry, as it will still be an unforgettable experience, even if just for the day.

The beach of Maya Bay as seen from the sea (boats are no longer allowed in the bay!)

The beach of Maya Bay as seen from the sea (boats are no longer allowed in the bay!)

I’ve been to Thailand four times, and three times to Phi Phi, so I understand the pull of these islands. One of the things I love about Thailand is the rich variety.

After visiting Koh Phi Phi, you could head to the north, play with elephants in Chiang Mai , discover the temples of Chiang Rai or Ayutthaya , explore the hustle and bustle of Bangkok , and even learn to cook pad Thai during a Thai cooking class .

So yes, go on a day trip to Phi Phi Island, but don’t forget to go beyond and see the other beautiful places in Thailand!

I hope you found my Phi Phi Island day trip guide useful, and that it will help you plan the perfect day tour. If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Excellent snorkeling on the Phi Phi islands.

However, Monkey Beach is not only famed for its furry residents.

Another amazing feature of the area and the Phi Phi tours is that it is an excellent snorkeling location.

The shallow waters around are home to vivid and vibrant underwater habitats, giving you the unusual sensation of swimming inside a tropical aquarium.

NOTE: Wherever you swim and snorkel, please respect the seabed flora and do not walk on the corals. Your caution is critical to their survival. It is up to you to ensure their survival. Please observe but do not touch or step on them!

Yes! The tours to Phi Phi islands are almost all-day tours unless you choose to spend a night or more at Phi Phi Don hotels.

Amelie – 3 April 2024

My only word for this is WOW! This excursion was exceptional due to the brilliant transparency of the water, the verdant sceneries, and the adrenaline ride on the speedboat included. The tour guide contributed a great deal to our comprehension of Phi Phi’s natural treasures as well as our pleasure of them. A great piece of advice for anyone: bring extra sunscreen with you; the sun in Thailand is not to be taken lightly.

Family fun and nature’s beauty all in one. Our trip to Phi Phi Island was spectacular, from the friendly guide to the stunning beaches. The kids couldn’t stop talking about the monkeys, and the buffet lunch was a delightful taste of Thailand. Perfect for families seeking adventure and relaxation.

Riccardo – via WhatsApp (verified owner) – 2 March 2024

Absolute paradise with an adrenaline rush! The Phi Phi Island speedboat tour was a dream, combining the thrill of speed with the tranquility of nature. Snorkeling in crystal-clear waters was surreal. A tip: bring an underwater camera to capture the vibrant underwater life.

E. Russell – via WhatsApp (verified owner) – 16 February 2024

This Phi Phi tour was a gem. The clear waters, the rich marine life, and the warmth of the group made me feel part of a family. Snorkeling here is a must-do. The guide’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the island made the day even more special.

A. SAHOO – via WhatsApp (verified owner) – 12 February 2024

This tour was a perfect experience from start to finish. From cutting through the waves on a speedboat to exploring the beauty of Maya Bay, every detail was taken care of. The buffet lunch at the beach restaurant was not only delicious, but also provided a nice relaxing time. It was truly a magical day on Phi Phi Island.

We’d an wonderful Day, most thanks to this team. Absolutely recommend this excursion for anybody looking to visit Phi Phi islands with just each day to spare.

' src=

Teresa – 12 March 2018

The excursion has been amazing at overall and also the tour guides are all considerate and kind for my loved ones. Drinks and snacks were provided through the entire trip once we wanted. In addition, the tour guide had instructed us the way to Motivate patiently and led us within our very first try. Travelling on a rate vessel was a tiny bit bumpy some times but still okay. Highly suggested.

' src=

Thomas J – 11 March 2018

Very eventful afternoon, made plenty of stops to distinct islands, however, Maya Bay could be your iconic the one which you’re searching for. The rate ship road was much less fun because of high winds.

' src=

Ritesh M – 9 March 2018

The ship was somewhat crowded but quite modern I must say; however they chose up us promptly and also we must find that a good deal.

' src=

Huey Sun – 9 March 2018

The tour guide is funny, the program of this trip would be quite full and only remained for 40 min for every part.

' src=

Giacomo M – 27 February 2018

Overall this was just a great experience

' src=

Kurou – 27 February 2018

A really good way to explore and enjoy Phi Phi Islands having fun with snorkeling

' src=

Guido – 24 February 2018

Only one negative side I should say, the first small island we visited was a bit crowded but I heard that Bamboo island is not like that, anyway we were 4 and we all liked the tour.

' src=

What to do in Phi Phi Islands?

Phi Phi island is blessed with beaches and nearby islands more beautiful than ever so many travellers wonder what the islands look like, how to get there, and how long should they stay. There are many ways to discover Phi Phi Island and fortunately, the island is back to life, shops, restaurants and hotels are open. There are a lot of visitors and you can eat, shop a bit and easily ride a longtail boat to the nearby islands and other beaches. In summary, the island is as beautiful, and nature is recovering nicely. Phi Phi Island has always been in the top 5 of the best things to do in Phuket .

Maya Bay in Phi Phi island

Phi Phi Islands (Koh Phi Phi) is a popular archipelago 40 km south of Phuket . If you were wondering, you would pronounce Phi Phi ‘Pee-Pee’, not ‘Fee-Fee’! They don’t need an introduction anymore since Leonardo DiCaprio took care of this in 2000 with the movie The Beach. Since then, the island has kept developing. The young crowd travelling to Phi Phi Island all year round seemed to love it so much that we decided to revisit it. The verdict? Yes, it’s crowded, especially at night, but the islands are stunning and great places to party!

Popular Day Trips to and around Phi Phi Islands

Pi Leh Lagoon - Phi Phi Island

If you come from Phuket, day trips usually include transfers from and to your hotel, lunch on Tonsai Bay and National Park fees to Maya Bay. If you are sleeping on the island, you can easily rent a long-tail boat. Expect to pay around 1,500 to 3,000 baht, depending on what you want to visit. If you want to enjoy super blue waters, don’t go too early as the shadows of the cliffs can affect the colour rendering of the amazing blue water in Loh Dalum Bay. Maybe leave at 10.30 or 11 am.

Here are the usual places where boats will take you : Maya Bay (when open, which is not always predictable), Viking Cave, (Used to be open to the public, but it’s now restricted), Loh Dalum Bay, Monkey Beach, Bamboo Island , and sometimes Mosquito island next to it.

How to get to phi phi island from phuket.

There are two easy ways to get to Phi Phi Island: by ferry or speedboat. A Ferry costs around 400 baht and takes about 2 hours to reach Phi Phi from Phuket. A speedboat ride costs 900 baht per person but only takes 50 minutes . (A ferry from Krabi will take one hour and a half). Usually, the transfer includes pick up from your hotel and is a return ticket , but double-check anyway. Any hotel or street tour counter in Phuket will be able to arrange this for you. If you rented a car , you could also park at the Rassada pier in Phuket town and buy your ferry ticket directly there, but it’s not really cheaper.

On the following page are some of the best places to see here. Of course, you can expect these places and islands to be busy. It may be a good idea to stay overnight and explore early morning to beat the crowds.

phi phi island 30

As we all sadly remember, a tsunami wiped out the island in 2004, and since then, despite the promises of keeping the island small and manageable, Phi Phi just grew busier but not always better. Nevertheless, Phi Phi is still the most popular of the many islands around Phuket .

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island

Access to Maya Bay is open but boats can’t enter the bay directly and therefore will drop you on a pier in the bay behind. It’s quite a queue, but ultimately, it is a lot less crowded than before. Visitors can’t swim in the bay, only walk knee-deep.

Maya Bay in Phi Phi Island, today

Pi Leh Lagoon

Pi Leh Lagoon on Phi Phi Island

Pi Leh Lagoon is characterized by its emerald-green waters, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs covered in lush greenery. The lagoon is situated within a semi-circular bay, giving it a secluded atmosphere. Due to its popularity, Pi Leh Lagoon can sometimes become crowded with tourists, especially during peak seasons. To fully appreciate its natural beauty and tranquility, visiting during less crowded times or early in the morning is recommended.

Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Pai)

Bamboo Island is a small, uninhabited island located 8 km northeast of the main Phi Phi island. It is known for its pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and abundant marine life, making it a popular destination for snorkelling and diving. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and offers breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea. It is also home to a small bamboo forest, which gives the island its name. This island is often part of the day trips travellers usually book in Phuket, or as a short boat ride from Phi Phi island itself.

Loh Dalum Bay

Loh Dalum Bay

Loh Dalum is a stunningly beautiful shallow bay located on the southern side of Phi Phi Island. It is easily recognizable as the wide expanse of turquoise water that is visible on the right-hand side of the famous panoramic photo taken from the viewpoint. Despite its size, Loh Dalum is a relatively narrow stretch of beach, measuring only 160 meters in width. In fact, you can walk from the main town of Tonsai to Loh Dalum in just a minute or two.

Despite its small size, Loh Dalum is a popular destination for tourists visiting Phi Phi Island. There are several hotels, restaurants, and bars located along the beach, which makes it an ideal spot for travellers looking for a lively atmosphere. The party scene on Loh Dalum is legendary, with music and dancing continuing into the early hours of the morning.

Phi Phi Viewpoint

Phi Phi Viewpoint Number 2

Reaching Phi Phi Viewpoint is a bit challenging, but it’s not too hard if you go at your own pace. Expect to sweat and maybe be bitten by local mosquitoes each time you stop breathing in a shade of a tree. Mosquitoes are smart as they ambush themselves in those strategic locations. At the end of the first long flight of stairs, you will reach Viewpoint Number 1 and the ticket counter. It costs 30 baht from that point on.

The Islands of Phi Phi Archipelago

In case you didn’t know, Phi Phi consists of several islands, but you can only stay on one. You will notice that many islands’ name starts with ‘Koh, which means ‘Island’ in Thai. So you will sometimes hear ‘Koh Phi Phi’ or ‘Phi Phi Island’, but for an apparent reason, rarely ‘Koh Phi Phi Island’.

Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Don is where everything is: the main town, all the hotels, restaurants, shopping, bars and the party! The landing pier is on Tonsai Bay, and the opposite side is Loh Dalum Beach. Phi Phi Don has several beaches, and hotels are mostly around the narrow part of the island. However, hotels are also on remote beaches, but it requires a short longtail boat ride to reach them. So if you plan to enjoy the party, you should pick the right beach! Of course, those hotels provide a free shuttle boat, but a boat ride might not be fun if you party too hard.

Koh Phi Phi Leh

Phi Phi Island in Thailand

Phi Phi Leh is where you will find the famous Maya Bay, which closed for three years and has recently reopened. It’s just a few kilometres south and about 30 minutes by long-tail boat. The main attractions are Maya Bay and Pi Leh Bay, a superb enclose lagoon with amazing blue waters. Popular activities on Phi Phi Leh include snorkelling, diving, and exploring the island’s caves and lagoons.

The geography of Phi Phi Don – Main Island

Phi Phi Don is the largest and only inhabited island in the Phi Phi archipelago in Thailand. It is known for its 4 main beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and lively nightlife. Popular activities on Phi Phi Don include snorkelling, diving, hiking, and visiting the island’s many bars and restaurants. Despite its popularity among tourists, the island has maintained much of its natural beauty and charm, mainly in the northern part.

Phi Phi island map

Tonsai Bay – Phi Phi Central Area

Phi Phi Don looks like a mad maze between 2 bays: Tonsai Bay , where ferries drop you off, and Loh Dalum Bay , where the main beach is.

Tonsai Bay

To imagine what walking down that maze feels like, picture the following: a T-Shirt shop, a tattoo parlour, a bar, a dive centre, a tattoo parlour, a fast food, a bar, a travel agency, a massage parlour; repeat again and again. I’ve never seen so many tattoo shops per meter square! I’ve never seen so many cats, either!

Most shops don’t open in the morning but until late at night. It is probably because most of the island’s population is away exploring the islands. Other visitors enjoy the soft sand and the beautiful scenery (if tides permit). The remaining tourists are probably still in bed trying to get over a massive hangover from one of these cheap ‘buckets’ that looked so cool the day before.

Long beach on Phi Phi Island

Long Beach is a superb sandy bay located just next to Tonsai Bay and easy to access by walking along the coast. The place is home to excellent hotels and bungalows like the Phi Phi Villa Resort.

Laem Thong Beach

Laem Tong Beach or Laemtong bay in koh Phi Phi

Laem Thong Beach is a beautiful and secluded beach located on the northern tip of Phi Phi Island. The beach boasts clear turquoise waters and soft white sand, making it an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkelling. The area is less developed than other beaches on the island, providing a peaceful and serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. Some of the popular hotels in the area include Zeavola Resort, Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island, and Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort.

All around Phi Phi Don, there are other beaches of different sizes such as the beautiful Loh Bagao beach further down (see map at the end of the page).

Where to party at Night?

The beach party and the street party are easy to join. Walk from one bar to another and follow the music, the crowd, and the atmosphere.

Beach Party on Phi Phi Island

Slinky is a beach bar famous for its fire show and club music right on the beach.

Stoned Bar

Stones Bar is on Loh Dalum Bay and has a fire show.

Muay Thai fight at Reggae bar on Koh Phi Phi

Reggae Bar, unlike a reggae bar, is somewhat famous for organising friendly Muay Thai fights between customers. As you wear head protection, it doesn’t seem to hurt (much), but it depends on your opponent. Nevertheless, it seems to be a lot of fun.

Stockholm Syndrome

Stockholm Bar

Stockholm Syndrome invites customers to drink games outside the bar; games involve a hose and a funnel and how fast you can drink from these.

Other popular places to party in Phi Phi

  • Kong Siam Live Bar has a fantastic singer able to entertain the crowds with drinking songs.
  • Carlito’s Bar is a waterfront bar on the other side of the bay. Als,o with club music and fire shows but with a better sitting area.

What’s a ‘Bucket’?

Buckets in Phi Phi island

Buckets are extremely popular in Phi Phi, and you can find them everywhere after sunset. Usually, a cheap mix of local whiskey (Sang Som), a red bull (you know what), a mixer and ice in a small plastic bucket, and a couple of straws. You can take this around as you party. As it’s sweet and cold and often uses cheap local alcohol, you don’t feel you are drinking much, and the Red Bull boosts you. Most people get drunk much faster and much more than they think. Fun.

Where to get a tattoo in Phi Phi?

Tattoo parlour in Phi Phi Island

That’s a tough one, they are everywhere, and they all claim the same thing: a sterile environment and a new needle for each customer, also Bamboo tattoos are available. So follow your instinct but let us know if you can recommend one shop. I looked at a couple of standard-size tattoos; they cost between 5,000 to 10,000 baht and take 3 to 6 hours to execute.

Where to eat

There are hundreds of places to choose from on Phi Phi Island. Walk along the few pedestrian walkways, and you can pick as you go. It’s a lucky draw. It’s more fun by the waterfront, but this is just us, so we tried the following: they were quite good.

Ciao Bella Italian restaurant on the Beach

Ciao Bella is an Italian restaurant right by the sea, on Loh Dalum Beach, just next to the party.

Tonsai Seafood

Tonsai Seafood

Tonsai Seafood serves seafood and Thai food on the Tonsai waterfront opposite Phi Phi Banyan Villa, where we stayed.

Shopping in Phi Phi

Shopping in Phi Phi Island

The famous expression “Same Same but Different” was probably coined here. ‘Phi Phi island’ tee shirts, short pants and light skirts, swimsuits, bags… everything you need for a holiday on a small island. Don’t expect much originality, but browsing is always fun, especially when there is not much to do.

Phuket, Thailand is the perfect place for those wanting an indulgent getaway – whether for just the weekend, or a longer stay.

Personally, I think 5 days is the minimum number of days you need in Phuket as there is so much to see and do, plus you want to have a good amount of time to really enjoy the beaches and top attractions.

We stayed at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa for 6 nights and had a fantastic family holiday enjoying all that was on offer on Thailand’s largest island.

We first visited Phuket 10 years earlier on our honeymoon and were not impressed. That was because we stayed in Patong Beach, the area notorious for wild party nights and a chaotic mess of street markets, pubs, and go go bars.

On our second stay in Phuket, we decided to stay in Karon Beach , which was perfect.

It is a much quieter destination more suited to families and those wanting to relax and appreciate, rather than paint the town scarlet!

We discovered that Phuket attracts many type of travelers, but where you base yourself really impacts your experience. If you stay in Karon Beach, Kata Beach or Kamala Beach, you can avoid the nightlife of Bangla Road and enjoy a relaxing beach vacation.

If you want to party, then Patong Beach is the place to go.

Wherever you stay, you can rent a car or scooter to get around and still be able to see the best of Phuket.

Honestly, all of Phuket’s attractions are within a scooter ride and it really doesn’t matter where you base yourself. You just got to pick an area with the vibe that’s right for you.

In the following Phuket itinerary, we’ve captured all of the highlights of Phuket, allowing you time to really get a sense of the Thai culture, discover the most beautiful scenery and indulge in the laid-back Phuket way.

Day 1: Phuket Town and Karon Beach

We’re going to assume that you arrive in Phuket the night before, so our first day in Phuket on this itinerary will be the first full day you have available.

If you traveled a long way, or if you landed in the morning, use the day that you arrive as a rest day before you start exploring.

On your first full day, rise early for breakfast in your hotel. Depending on where you’re staying, you might want to spend some time in the morning hitting the Phuket beaches and cooling off with a morning swim.

Some excellent beaches for a swim are Karon Beach, Kata Beach (And Kata Noi Beach, a smaller beach near Kata), Nai Harn Beach, Layan Beach or even Patong Beach in the day time.

You might also need to use your morning to get orientated, such as picking up a sim card and hiring a car or scooter, so use this morning as a chilled morning to get yourself ready for a Phuket adventure.

Thailand is full of difficult decisions, like should I drink a beer or a cocktail, or swim at the pool with ocean views or cross the road to swim in the warm ocean, with views?

You will find there is plenty of time to enjoy the beaches or swim by the pool in this 5 day Phuket itinerary, as we want you to have a relaxing vacation and enjoy the number one thing to do in Phuket – visit the beaches.

At the beginning or end of each day, allow some downtime by the pool or on the beach.

After lunch, opt to take a Thai cooking class with Pat. This is your first introduction to Thai culture and a way to mingle with the locals and learn from them.

Visiting Pat’s home and learning to cook Thai food was one of our Phuket highlights.

Pat’s home Thai cooking school first opened in 1996 in Phuket Town and has since been featured in many print media publications and TV programs.

Our experience began in the local market gathering the supplies for the food we were soon to prepare.

We had a lesson in the various uses of vegetables and herbs in Thai cooking as we walked through, picking up each new one to smell and feel the textures.

This introduction was the perfect way to get a feel for the basics of a delicious Thai meal and what sets it apart from the cuisine of its Asian neighbours. I certainly had a better understanding of where I was going wrong with my own attempts of cooking Thai food at home.

Pat’s open aired kitchen is attached to the side of her home and she never has more than 8 people per class , maintaining that small, homely feel.

After a welcome glass of iced lemongrass tea, we donned the aprons and set to work chopping, peeling, mortar and pestle bashing to create some of my favourite Thai meals: tom yum goong, spring rolls, green curry, som tum and banana in coconut milk.

What I loved the most was sharing the experience with Kalyra. She eagerly followed us through the markets learning about the different ingredients and enthusiastically helped me prepare the food. My Junior – Masterchef even rolled a near perfect spring roll.

I was even impressed with my ability to finally produce a delicious Thai meal thanks to Pat’s expert guidance.

Not far from Phuket Town is the stunning Wat Chalong . I was suffering from Bangkok belly on our visit and could barely focus on the aesthetic designs of the temple complex.

We’ve visited a lot of wats in South East Asia, and this one certainly had its own unique flare. Craig was more than impressed and found it to be a perfect temple for those new to Thailand.

The Grand Pagoda dominates the temple grounds–it’s cool and breezy location makes it just as popular as the splinter of Buddha’s bone that rests inside.

The pagoda walls depict Buddha’s life story and immense golden statues of the various Buddha poses sit in the main hall. Choose the one you wish to worship to most.

Pay attention to the fire crackers going off inside the brick oven out the front of the ordination hall. Thai people set them off to celebrate if they receive any good luck.

The Big Buddha sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata and is 45 meter high and can be seen far and wide across Phuket.

Not only is it a place of tranquillity to receive your blessings, but it’s one of the best viewpoints in Phuket which has 360 degree views of the island.

The Buddha’s body is layered with Burmese marble which shines in the sun, making it a symbol of hope and a guarding force of protection.

It’s a great place to visit for sunset as it has sweeping views.

I have one rule in Thailand. No Western food allowed.

I would even put it in my black book of crimes you should never commit. My second rule is you should never stop eating, no matter how full you are.

Who cares you cooked up a smorgasbord for lunch, you have had a whole afternoon to digest it. It’s time to top up!

You can have an indulgent Thai dinner at the Thai Thai Restaurant at the Hilton. It’s a great way to ease into Thai cuisine when you’re not ready for street food yet.

Enjoy it, because tomorrow I’m sending you to a night market!

What I love the most about dining out in Thailand – and this restaurant excelled at this – is the outstanding service.

Our head waiter, Pop, was always on hand to ensure we were happy and content. He shared many stories with us of Thailand and his own life, always with an affectionate giggle.

We enjoyed crab cakes and Thai prawn salad for entrees, followed by slow cooked tilapia in coconut milk and Phuket yellow noodles.

I had to finish dinner with my favourite Thai desert—mango and sticky rice; Craig opted for the coconut ice cream and tried unsuccessfully to convince me his was better.

Lucky Kalyra was asleep in the chair or she would have backed him.

Now you can go back to your room and collapse. The pillows will mould around your head so you feel like you are sleeping on clouds.

Day 2: Phang Ngha Bay Boat Tour

Your day will start early so first stop will be the poolside breakfast buffet. Eat up as today is a BIG day!

Stop 1: Go on the James Bond Island Tour of Phang Nga Bay (Full Day)

I never wanted to go on his tour before because it was so James Bond focused, and I have never watched a movie.

Our friend Roger recommended it as one of his favorite things to do in Phuket , so we decided to give it a chance.

James Bond Island was made famous by his movie “ The Man with the Golden Gun ” It does not mean much to me, but the island itself is very picturesque and photo worthy.

Check prices and availability for James Bond Island Day Trips here.

Many of our followers on facebook recommended the Sea Canoes as the best way to enjoy the limestone tunnels and caves.

This was not really an option with our little ones, so we did a full day tour taking in four of the islands in the Phang Nga Bay area.

The seas were a little rough and the water murky, but if you arrived on a day when the Andaman Sea was blazing with its crystal clear emerald waters and the dramatic limestone mountains, I’d imagine it would be stunning.

The floating Muslim village at Koh Paynee was a fascinating stop.

The silted homes joined together in the mud swamps in front of a large limestone rock island was started 200 years ago by 3 Indonesian families now hosts nearly 1700 people and over 300 families.

We really loved our small kayak tour through the mangroves and tunnels of one island and swimming at Naka Island . It’s a full day tour and popular, but an enjoyable day out.

Do not delay in heading straight to the After Beach Bar on the hill behind Kata Noi. This place is legendary for sunset drinks and a relaxed vibe.

We arrived here after a day of cruising the beaches of the West Coast of Phuket. As soon as we arrived and saw the amazing views and felt the cool breeze we were happy.

It didn’t even faze us that we had chosen the one day in our two weeks in Thailand that was cloudy!!

Luckily there was a small break in the clouds so we were able to see a beautiful pink orb poking through.

Sit back with a cocktail and enjoy. Just don’t order a mojito – they were awful and they tried to charge me for three of them!

If you are not too exhausted, head to the Karon temple night markets held every Tuesday and Saturday night for some incredible street food and to shop for souvenirs.

The shopping here is cheap! It is mostly clothes with the odd tourist artifacts like lanterns and Buddha statues thrown in.

You can even pick up a cheap bowl of curry noodles for 30 baht and Thai banana pancake for 40 baht.

Day 3: Culture Day: Thai Massage, Phuket Old Town, Cabaret Show

After a long day on the boat yesterday, you might want to give yourself a little treat. I highly recommend you get yourself a Thai massage at least once on your trip.

Alternatively, you can visit a resort spa and opt for a relaxing hot stone massage or aromatherapy treatment.

You cannot come to Thailand without worshipping your body with a Thai massage. Crime number 10 to never commit in Thailand!

We’d already had our cheap 200 baht massage in Bangkok before arriving to Phuket and would definitely say it’s a good idea to get one before a flight home.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of a Thai massage, allow me to explain.

A Thai massage is a traditional form of bodywork that originated in Thailand over 2,500 years ago.

It is a type of massage that combines acupressure, stretching, and deep tissue techniques to help release tension and promote relaxation.

During a Thai massage, you typically lie on a mat on the floor while the practitioner uses their hands, elbows, knees, and feet to apply pressure to various points on the body.

The massage therapist may also use gentle stretching movements to help improve flexibility and range of motion.

Essentially it’s a cross between massage and some kind of sports yoga.

Thai massage has many benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving circulation, boosting energy levels, and reducing muscle tension and pain.

Thai massage is often performed fully clothed, without the use of oils or lotions. It is becoming increasingly popular in western countries as a way to relax and rejuvenate the body and mind.

If this doesn’t sound relaxing to you, you can ramp up the feel good factor with a special spa treatment.

They may be expensive in comparisons to the ones you can get on the beach or in a room with 10 other people, but in comparison to Australian prices they’re really quite cheap.

A body scrub and a Thai-herbal-heat massage later we felt like new and improved version of ourselves. We possibly couldn’t get any more relaxed.

Disclaimer: Our stay at Hilton Arcadia was hosted in part by Thailand Tourism and Hilton Arcadia Phuket, though all thoughts, ideas and opinions in this guide are our own.

After a massage, you are probably feeling more energized and ready to explore. So take a trip over to Old Town Phuket, a charming and historic district located in the heart of Phuket.

One of the main reasons to visit Old Town Phuket is its fascinating mix of architecture. The district is home to beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese buildings, some of which date back to the 19th century.

These buildings give visitors a glimpse into Phuket’s colonial past and offer a unique backdrop for exploring the area.

In addition to its stunning architecture, Old Town Phuket is also home to a vibrant street art scene.

Keep an eye out for colorful murals and graffiti that adorn the walls of many buildings throughout the district.

After exploring Old Town Phuket, head over to Patong Beach to try your hand at some watersports.

Patong Beach is a great place to try parasailing, jet skiing, or even just rent a kayak or stand up paddle board and hit the ocean.

If you’ve never tried any adventurous water sports before, this is a great place to try it because the prices are cheap and the bay is sheltered so you don’t get a huge strong wind blowing you in all directions.

One of the best things to do in Phuket at night is to attend a cabaret show.

A cabaret show in Phuket is a unique and entertaining experience that allows you to dive into Phuket’s long-standing traditions and history.

The shows are known for their elaborate costumes, stunning stage design, and talented performers. They offer a variety of performances, from traditional Thai dances to contemporary pop numbers, the shows cater to all tastes and interests.

The performances are also family-friendly, making them a great activity for travelers of all ages.

Check prices and availability for Simon Cabaret Show here.

Day 4: Phi Phi Islands Day Trip

Another popular day trip from Phuket is to the Phi Phi Islands, which are arguably the most beautiful islands in the Thailand archipelago.

You can stay on the larger of the two islands, Don Phi Phi, if you have more time, but it’s also easy to see the highlights on a day trip.

Check prices and availability for Phi Phi Islands Day Trips here.

The tour departs from Phuket at around 8am in the morning and you will hop into a speedboat or long tail boat and head to Phi Phi Islands. I would suggest getting a speedboat tour as they are faster, so you can visit more stops.

The first stop is Maya Bay, usually. The boat tours may swap these stops around so you can visit Maya Bay at a time when there are less people.

It’s the highlight of a Phi Phi Islands day tour because it’s Thailand’s most beautiful beach. It was made famous after it appeared in the movie The Beach starring Leonardo Dicaprio and is a protected beach.

It was closed for around five years or so due to overtourism, but now it’s open again for day tours only. You cannot swim in the beach, but it’s beauty is worth the journey.

You can sit back and admire the stunning limestone cliffs that surrounding it, and maybe even spot a black-tip reef shark in the water if you’re lucky.

The next stop is Pileh Lagoon, a hidden gem located between tall cliffs. It’s a great place to swim in the emerald-green waters of the lagoon and take in the breathtaking views around you.

If you didn’t see much marine life swimming in the lagoon, then don’t worry. The next stop is a snorkel spot at one of the best spots in Phi Phi Islands.

It’s usually a spot around Viking Cave, a sea cave that looks out into the open waters of the Andaman Sea.

Here is a great spot to discover the colorful coral and marine life that inhabit the waters, and marvel at the beauty of the underwater world.

I mentioned earlier that Don Phi Phi Island is the largest island in the Phi Phi Islands and is much more developed than the others.

It’s a great place for lunch at a local restaurant and to browse the market shops that line the two streets on the island.

Usually, if the weather is good, the tour will end with a swimming spot at a remote uninhabited island.

Usually, you will visit Bamboo Island, a small and secluded island with clear waters perfect for swimming.

Soak up the sun on the white sandy beach or swim in the crystal clear waters before you relax on the boat and enjoy the ride back to Phuket.

Day 5: Elephant Sanctuary, Bang Pae Waterfall, Promthep Cape

On the last day, we will visit some of the lesser known attractions and wildlife sanctuaries.

Visiting an elephant sanctuary is one of the most popular and rewarding experiences in Thailand, and allows tourists to see these majestic animals up close while supporting their welfare and conservation efforts.

One of the main reasons to visit an elephant sanctuary in Phuket is the opportunity to witness these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

However, not all sanctuaries provide a safe and ethical environment for elephants, so you do need to do your research carefully.

An ethical sanctuary allows you to observe them roaming freely, socializing with other elephants, and engaging in natural behaviors such as bathing and grazing but without getting involved.

Most of the elephants have been rescued from the tourism or logging industries.

Check prices and availability for Elephant Sanctuaries here.

Bangae Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction in Phuket’s Khao Phra Thaeo National Park.

One of the main reasons to visit Bang Pae Waterfall is its breathtaking beauty.

It is the largest and most impressive waterfall on the island, with water cascading down a series of rocky tiers.

You can cool off in the refreshing pool at the base of the falls or take a dip in the natural pools along the trail.

In addition to its natural beauty, Bang Pae Waterfall is surrounded by lush rainforest, making it a great place to explore and hike.

Another great sunset spot in Phuket is Promthep Cape, located at the southernmost point of Phuket island.

One of the main reasons to visit Promthep Cape is its breathtaking views. The cape overlooks the Andaman Sea and offers panoramic views of the coastline, islands, and surrounding mountains.

The sunset views from Promthep Cape are particularly stunning and draw large crowds of visitors every evening.

The best way to get around Phuket is to hire a scooter and drive yourself. It’s going to save you money, and also allows you the freedom to travel at your own pace.

With a family, a scooter isn’t a good option, but you can also hire a car as well.

Alternatively, you can take taxis. This is a convenient and reliable way to get around Phuket. They can be found at Phuket International Airport, major hotels, and tourist areas.

However, taxi fares in Phuket can be expensive, especially for long distances, so you might want to use a ride-share app such as Grab or Bolt.

Tuk-tuks are an experience in Thailand. They are three-wheeled vehicles that are a popular mode of transportation in Phuket.

They are cheaper than taxis, but prices can be negotiated, so it’s important to agree on a price before getting in.

Songthaews are like bus versions of tuk tuks. They are converted pickup trucks that operate as shared taxis.

They are a budget-friendly option, but routes and schedules can be limited, and they also take a long time to get from A to B, making them less convenient for travelers with specific plans.

The best time to visit Phuket depends on your preferences and travel plans, but winter is our prefered time of year to visit.

Phuket has a tropical climate, with high temperatures and humidity levels throughout the year, though it does have a long rainy season from June to October which can get in the way of your beach time.

The peak tourist season in Phuket is from November to February, when the weather is generally sunny and dry. December is the busiest month and can be crowded, so book accommodation and tours in advance.

The temperatures during this time are milder, making it a great time for outdoor activities such as hiking and beach hopping.

The sea is also calm during these months, making it ideal for water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving.

March to May is the hot season in Phuket, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C.

April is also a time when you see pollution from the north come down to the south, which doesn’t usually reach Phuket, but it does mean you get a lot of people fleeing the north to escape the pollution and residing in Phuket.

So, expect accommodations to be booked up in these months as well.

This can make outdoor activities uncomfortable during the day, but the evenings are cooler and perfect for exploring the island’s nightlife scene.
