Qantas becomes one of the first airlines to require that international passengers be vaccinated.

Qantas, Australia’s largest airline, will require that all passengers on international flights are vaccinated against the coronavirus when it restarts worldwide operations in December, its chief executive said Wednesday, making it one of the first airlines in the world to require proof of vaccination for everyone on board.

Alan Joyce, the chief executive of the airline’s parent company, Qantas Group, made the announcement in an interview with the Trans-Tasman Business Circle, a network for business leaders in Australia and New Zealand.

“Qantas will have a policy that internationally we’ll only be carrying vaccinated passengers because we think that’s going to be one of the requirements to show that you’re flying safe,” he said, adding that many countries are requiring arriving travelers to be vaccinated anyway. He said he hoped the policy would be in place “by Christmas.”

Qantas, which is headquartered in Sydney, suspended international operations during the pandemic — but did resume flights to New Zealand in April this year before suspending them again on July 31 . The airline plans to restart flights abroad in December. Mr. Joyce said in November of last year that he was considering banning unvaccinated travelers on international flights, but did not offer a timeline.

Other airlines have announced that they will require flight attendants and pilots to be vaccinated, but few other airlines have committed to banning unvaccinated passengers. Air Canada seems to be the only other airline that is poised to soon begin turning away unvaccinated passengers. By the end of October , the Canadian government will require all commercial airline employees and passengers to be vaccinated. Air Canada endorsed the government’s position in August.

Leonard J. Marcus, the co-director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at Harvard University and the director of an initiative focused on public health on flights, said he hoped that other airlines would follow Qantas’s lead.

“I think this would be a bold and courageous step in the right direction,” he said. Requiring passenger vaccinations is currently easier in Australia than in other parts of the world, he said, because the country has a uniform system of validating vaccination status , in contrast to places like the United States.

A spokeswoman for Qantas said that the airline would permit people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons to fly, but the policy for children too young to be eligible for vaccination has not yet been finalized.

Qantas has made vaccination central to its marketing strategy throughout the pandemic. A recent television ad , which has been widely shared, shows Australians longing to travel and then getting vaccinations before heading off on international flights.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Japan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Japanese Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Japan.

Travel in Japan

There are no official COVID-19 restrictions on travel, dining out or other activities. However, the Japanese government still recommends social distancing, mask wearing and other basic precautions. Public compliance with these recommendations is high.

Passport validity requirements

If you’re visiting Japan, your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. No additional period of validity is required.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

If you have a ‘British citizen’ passport, you can travel to Japan for tourism or business for up to 90 days. You will get a visa in your passport on arrival, and you do not need to apply before you travel. The Japanese immigration authorities may extend your visa by another 90 days at their discretion. You will need to apply for an extension.

If you have another type of British passport, you must get a visa.

To stay longer (to work or study, for or for other reasons), you must meet the Japanese government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Japanese Embassy in the UK .

It is illegal to work in Japan without the correct visa however informal or temporary the work.

If you overstay your permission to remain in Japan, you risk arrest, detention and a heavy fine.

For residency information, see the Japanese Immigration Services Agency website and living in Japan .

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Japan guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Japan . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It is illegal to bring meat products (including sausages, bacon and ham) to Japan without permission from the Japanese Animal Quarantine Service . Penalties include a heavy fine and prison sentence.

Whale meat is available in Japan but importing it into the UK and EU is illegal. If you import whale meat to the UK, you can get a fine of up to £5,000 and a prison sentence. Customs officers will seize the meat.

Taking money into Japan

People mainly use cash in Japan.

You may have difficulty using credit and debit cards issued outside Japan. Cirrus, Maestro, Link and Delta cash cards are not widely accepted. Japanese post offices, 7-Eleven stores and JP Post Bank have cash machines that will accept some foreign cards during business hours.

Check with your bank before travelling and take alternative sources of money.

Help and Support

Domestic travel on international flights, 24/01/2024 • knowledge, information.

What do I need to do if I have booked domestic travel on an international flight?

Some international Qantas flights include Australian domestic sectors which can be booked separately. This includes:

  • QF9 and QF10 between Melbourne and Perth, which continue on as flights QF9 and QF10 between Perth and London on the Qantas Dreamliner
  • QF5 and QF6 between Sydney and Perth, which continue on as flight QF5 and QF6 between Perth and Rome.
  • QF33 and QF34 between Sydney and Perth, which continues on as flight QF33 and QF34 between Perth and Paris.

If you’ve booked a domestic flight which forms part of an international flight, there are some important things you need to know:

  • You'll need to collect your baggage on arrival in Perth, proceed through customs/immigration and check in for your next flight.
  • Check in and bag drop closes 60 minutes before departure
  • Be at the boarding gate 40 minutes before
  • Government issued identification eg Australian driver's licence, or
  • Other identification which is current, and includes the full name and a photograph of the bearer
  • Be aware of international carry-on limits for liquids, aerosols, gels and powders .
  • Your boarding pass will show you’re a domestic traveller so international processing won’t apply. This means the use of passports with SmartGates is not permitted and you'll be required to use a dedicated domestic queue to pass through immigration.

Aussie family's nightmare with Qantas ruins dream holiday

  • Airline loses family's tickets
  • Man fighting for a refund
  • READ MORE:  Passenger breaks his leg 30 minutes into a seven-hour flight

An outraged father has lashed out at Qantas for losing his pre-booked air tickets and ruining his holiday with his wife and children.

Melbourne man Christopher Reynolds booked a $3,000 family trip to Japan in 2020, which was cancelled because of travel restrictions during the Covid pandemic.

In 2021, the family-of-four used part of a Qantas voucher to book a trip to Western Australia , but those plans were also thwarted by border closures.

Earlier this year, Mr Reynolds booked a family trip to the Gold Coast .

But he claimed when they arrived to check in at Melbourne  Airport, Qantas staff said they could not find the booking.

Mr Reynolds was told to call the customer service line, but the telephone operator told them the company's refund system was down.

By the time he got off the phone, their flight had taken off and his kids were having a meltdown.

Mr Reynolds ended up paying for the next available flight because the family had already booked a hotel and activities on the Gold Coast.

After more than 20 hours on the phone fighting for Qantas to refund their money, the airline repaid $1,000 and gave them $100 vouchers for the inconvenience.

Mr Reynolds said everyone at the airline had admitted to him that 'things weren't done right' and that they would sort it out within a week.

Butthe delays had been frustrating for the family who needed the money to cover basic living expenses.

'I had a bit of pride in the national carrier and during Covid, I thought we'd do our little bit to support them as well... but this experience has made me go, I don't want to fly with them again,' he told  7News .

It is understood that the airline now plans to refund the full amount.

'We sincerely apologise for Mr Reynolds’ experience and recognise this is not the experience our customers expect,' a Qantas spokesman said.

'We have reached out to Mr Reynolds to apologise and to arrange for the remaining funds to be refunded.'

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for further comment.
