Happy Travellers
The port of Malaga is very close to the Historic Center. Upon reaching the meeting point, the guide showed us a historical area that would have been impossible for us to discover on our own. Highly recommended.
We usually buy the excursions offered by the cruise but this time we decided to take a risk. And we do not regret it at all. We visit a local market and many typical streets. Malaga was our favorite stop.
It was quite fun to watch our fellow cruise shipmates in the streets in groups of up to 50 people while we were no more than 8. In the end we visit much more than they did. We felt in love with Ronda!

Malaga, Spain
Description.
One of Spain's oldest cities, Malaga has been inhabited since the time of the Phoenicians, who called it Malaka. A city of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, churches and sunny plazas, Malaga offers an idealized image of Spain. Malaga was the chief port for the Kingdom of Granada, the last stronghold of Moorish Spain. The city fell to Ferdinand and Isabelle in 1487. The re-conquest of Spain ended with the fall of Grenada in 1492, the year Columbus discovered the New World. In addition to the fabled Alhambra, Granada boasts some significant landmarks such as the Old Quarter, the majestic Granada Cathedral, Alcazaba – an ancient Moorish fortress nestled above the city, and the Royal Chapel – the final resting place of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Andalusia's main port is also your gateway to the resorts of the Costa del Sol.

Malaga Shore Excursions: Gateway to the Costa del Sol
Malaga is a bustling city located on the southern coast of Spain. It is an excellent cruise port of call due to the wide variety of Malaga shore excursions you can do while docked. Cruisers can stick close to port and do a city tour of Malaga or head out to one of the nearby landmarks and historical sites located in the towns and cities that are all an easy day trip from Malaga.
A city tour from your cruise to Malaga will escort you to the city’s top sights. You’ll learn about Malaga’s history as a port city as you see top sights such as the Castillo de Gibralfaro, which consists of the remains of a 10th century Moorish palace; the Cathedral of Malaga with its Baroque facade; and the Museo Picasso, a fitting place to visit since Malaga is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Food tours are also excellent Malaga shore excursions to do to experience the sights and the tastes of the city.
Malaga is adjacent to the lovely Costa del Sol, a stretch of sandy coastline lined by ritzy resorts, boutiques, and restaurants. The main draw is that soft sand, though, and a beach break to one of the beaches of Costa Del Sol that includes a beach lounge chair is a wonderfully relaxing way to get some sunshine while in port on a Mediterranean cruise .
Malaga is also an excellent jumping off point to some of the most spectacular cities and sites in Spain. One of the top things to do in Malaga from a cruise is to visit the breathtaking Alhambra Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is widely considered to be one of the best examples of Moorish architecture in the world. The massive complex of Alhambra is located in Granada, an Andalusian city worth exploring in its own right, which can be done on a Malaga shore excursion.
Other locations you can visit include beautiful Marbella and quaint Mijas. Whatever you decide to do and see during your day in Malaga, you’re sure to have a memorable time.

Has anyone taken this tour through Royal Caribbean? I went there as a child and am now in my 40's and want to go there with my husband on an upcoming RCL cruise. I'm trying to decide if I should do it thru RCL or independently. I generally stay away from big ship tours, but with the pandemic I'm a bit concerned RCL or the Spanish Government might not allow us to do it with an outside vendor. (I already have a vendor in mind.). My travel agent is not very knowledgeable in travel issues other than selling cruises via her computer as she does not actually cruise or travel much, so she has no advice for me.
The outside vendor I'm looking at offers more extra time in the Granada area to sightsee & eat lunch on our own after touring the Alhambra. How much time does the Royal Caribbean tour offer for this? The write up on their website says it is limited and we will eat a pre-packed lunch on the bus on the way back to Malaga. I'm hoping someone who has been on the tour thru RCL can tell me their experience. Thank you

From what I see for our Allure TA, there is no stop at the palace. Outside view only. Disappointing
We took a tour with Spain Day Tours in 2015, "Malaga to Granada" that included the palacce. It was amazing, gorgeous, and I will never forget that tour. Full day tour.

We were on the Allure at the end of April at the time.

Another vote for Spain Day Tours. We did the Malaga to Granada tour which included Alhambra with them in October 2019.

I also did Spain Day Tours on the March 2020 Allure cruise. At the time I booked, RCI did not offer a tour that went inside ... and I wasn't interested in a drive-by. I'm not a fan of the lunch on the bus approach, but to each his own.

I really enjoyed Cordoba. Headed back to Malaga on Harmony next month.

Your pictures from Cordoba were fantastic. I've made a mental note to book that excursion next time I head to Spain.
My daughter is heading to Spain for a week on the Harmony in late October. She did a Lift & Shift from the Odyssey sailing that was the last one before the scheduled TA. She'll be doing 5 days in Rome before the cruise.

We did the Alhambra Palace and Gardens excursion through Royal Caribbean in 2018. From what I remember I think we mostly enjoyed it, the main problem was it was a large group tour, and so you're really at the mercy of the group. We ended up spending a lot of time at a shop near the palace because a lot of the group wanted to buy stuff, and we ended up spending less time in the gardens than we would have personally preferred.

When we sent several years ago we took the Royal Caribbean tour. At the palace, we were pretty much left to our own after a brief tour. I enjoyed it. The engineering to get the water operating in the fountains was incredible.
I also recommend Spain Day Tours. The tour guide on the small bus/van provided some interesting information regarding he architecture, history and economy of Spain en route - with a good balance between speaking and periods of silence for people to enjoy the sights (or even take a snooze). Once we got to the Alhambra, an excellent guide took over. We covered a lot of ground and the tour was very informative. It simply is too magical a place not to maximize time there.
Our only slight regret was that we did not get back to port quite early enough to get some grilled fish on the beach. We missed our window of opportunity by about 20 minutes due to some laggards at the last stop on the road for a restroom break and to pick up some drinks. Can't imagine how frustrating it would be to just do a drive by or be at the timing mercy of a large bus of folks.

Bordeaux and La Rochelle are not next to each other, you have to check in which city the cruise arrives but if you are in one or the other, there is the possibility to discover alone. For Bilbao, the cruise terminal is further away but there is a metro line. And the Gugenheim Museum is a must in Bilbao. Quote.
The gentle weather, beautiful scenery, fascinating history, super friendly locals and fabulous food and wine of this iconic region make it an ideal destination for cruise passengers all year round.. Due to the proximity of the port of Malaga to the city of Granada, most passengers arriving on a cruise ship choose to take an Alhambra and Granada shore excursion.
