Subway Surfers is a free download endless running game in the vein of titles like Temple Run . Players find themselves in the stylish shoes of Jake, a young graffiti artist. Caught in the act by a tenacious police inspector and his dog, Jake is forced to ride the rails to make his escape.

In Subway Surfers, you’ll dodge oncoming trains, collect coins, and use quick reflexes to stay one step ahead of the law. Run away on foot or use an arsenal of custom hoverboards and jetpacks to evade your pursuit. You can do this all without spending a dime, as the arcade game is entirely free to download and install.

Ride the rails in vivid color

A far cry from drab and lifeless, Subway Surfers introduces players to a vibrant, colorful world full of eye-catching environments and unique characters. Playing as Jake, you’ll need to use your swiping skills to make it through an endless gauntlet of subway rails and grind trains to escape the clutches of the law. The gameplay is pretty standard for an endless runner—Jake will keep running forward while you swipe left and right to dodge obstacles in your path.

The swipe-to-move mechanic is a welcome change from screen-tilting mechanics in competitors like Temple Run, giving you way more precision and control over your movements. It’s an ostensibly small difference but leads to a much better game feel overall. This improved game feel is then aided by the game’s slate of power-ups. You’ll gather coins as you run, which you can cash in on power-ups like jetpacks or hoverboards that will get you farther and help dodge obstacles.

Another unique style change is the ability to customize the power-ups as well, using unique skins like the Jive Outfit that can be unlocked during gameplay. You’ll also be able to unlock new characters like Tricky and Fresh, and there’s an entire library of custom cosmetic content to select from. Though the game is of course totally free, players who want to spend real-life currency can buy additional in-game cosmetics and power-ups.

Though paying up does make the game slightly easier, you won’t be missing much if you’d rather save your cash. The real-money aspects of the game aren’t at the forefront and it avoids the pay-to-win feel that some other free-to-play apps fall into.

A unique makeover for endless runners

It’s definitely safe to say that Subway Surfers’ major strong point is the visual style. The cartoonish HD graphics and bright environments are a huge draw, making it easy to lose yourself in the world.

There’s always something new and engaging to look at, and you’ll want to keep on playing just so you can keep taking in those eye-catching visuals seeing all the new characters and content that you can unlock. You’ll take to the chase and escape from the law all in gorgeous HD graphics .

Visuals aside, the simple controls also set the game apart, making for a much more intuitive experience. Easier controls mean you can stay alive longer, and thus, keep on playing. Both of these factors contribute to how addicting this game is. It’s easy to play in short bursts if you’ve got a bit of time on your hands, but you might also find yourself getting lost in long binging sessions as you dodge the oncoming trains and ride the rails over and over.

You’ll want to keep on going so you can unlock that next item or character. The game’s rotating slate of daily challenges will also keep you coming back for more. The challenges put the focus on endurance, so you’ll want to keep on running.

In addition to the challenge modes, you can also take a loose approach and give the Arcade Mode a try. As an added bonus, Snapchat users should check out a multiplayer mode available via the app. You can get a crew together with your friends and compete for the highest score.

Significant stumbles

Subway Surfers does have quite a lot going for it as a free downloadable app, but that surface style masks a few major flaws. Chief among these flaws is the game’s framerate issues. Otherwise, this may be a minor gripe, but framerate issues in an endless runner can seriously detract from gameplay. Jumpy frames may lead to an unintended and frustrating game-over, or keep you from finishing a daily challenge if you miss a dodge due to a framerate issue.

Beyond that, the game isn’t hugely difficult. There isn’t really a skill curve, so once you get the hang of playing, there’s no real sense of challenge to keep the game itself engaging. You may want to keep playing to unlock new items, but the gameplay itself isn’t really much to write home about.

After a while, playing becomes more of an endurance test than anything. After a time, you’ll start to recognize the game’s patterns, which removes any real sense of skill or urgency.

The game’s monotonous soundtrack certainly contributes to the feeling of an endurance test. It consists of a single looping track. This lack of variety in the music is a bit disappointing given the variety present in the game’s other aspects. Especially for an endless runner, engaging music is important given that the objective is to stay alive for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, you’ll probably find yourself muting the music entirely to keep from being driven completely crazy. This isn’t a great alternative, because playing an endless runner without any sort of beat in the background isn’t all that fun.

Substance takes a backseat to style

There’s no denying that Subway Surfer is gorgeous to look at. The game’s eye-catching visuals and engaging style set it apart in a crowded field. However, at the end of the day, these visuals don’t do much to mask the game’s main flaws. It’s certainly worth a try, especially since it is free, but it might not keep you coming back for more like other titles in the genre.

Sapphire Safari (Early Access)

Re:focused v011.

Welcome explorers! With another month behind us, we are finally getting Sapphire Safari closer to our imagined game, how exciting! This month we had a focus on fixing a lot of the feedback that was building up over the last couple of releases. A great way to clean up before 2023 really starts.

Camera camera camera!

A big piece of feedback was around our control scheme for camera functions, like zoom, focus, etc. The issue was that having a manual focus required, well, buttons. The previous system allowed us to move a line along a pathway so naturally, a scroll wheel made the most sense. What resulted was a very confusing and time-consuming way to get nice photos. To fix this we took the opportunity to swap over to the cine camera system within Unreal Engine 5.1, which looks a lot nicer but comes with an implementation cost.

Along with the cine camera, we also added autofocus. All you need to do is watch the monster girl through the viewfinder and the focus will automatically be pulled, it leads to some amazing shots. Though right now it's a little wonky with how it works along with the presentation of it all.

We also swapped over the main POV camera to cine as well, so it might feel a little different to move around the world. It is something we will be tweaking in the future.

AI overhauled once again

We have finally finished our move over to State Tree based AI for Sapphire. Currently, the AI has a primary focus of fleeing from the player once spotted based on sight, however, scattered around the game world are special Smart Objects the AI can occupy based on their needs. So if a character is thirsty, they will seek out Smart Objects that can add more thirst to their needs. This system will extend to sexual actions (like say a plant Smart Object for cunnilingus). Still in its infancy but the start of a great system for sure.

There have been quite a few other features added to this build, stuff like physics being reenabled, spawning tweaks, and such. Overall this should not change your enjoyment of the game.

• Simplified spawn region blocker search. This should reduce the initial map load time
• Simplified AI material randomization. Should reduce spawn hitching

how long until the game is on steam, I'm willing to wait

Still a wait, we are making sure it is polished and ready for general reviews before launching.

No? If you want it on steam you'll need to purchase it on steam. Itch is just like any other store, you wouldn't expect an itch key because you purchased on steam would you?

will it be the same as the Steam version and will be updated regularly when it realeses on steam? or is the product i purchased only access to play early and when the game releases i will have to buy it again? im not sure if im explaining this right im kinda slow

Why would you think you'd need to purchase every patch? You purchase, it gets updated when the game patch is ready. No store gets it first or whatever you might be implying.

i suppose im just worried that when it comes out on steam  you would stop updating here on itch since a lot of the games i played did that

You mean outside of the other games that we release on multiple stores at the same time proving that assumption wrong?

Sapphire Safari already has contracts for 5 official stores including itch and 2 platforms for subscription for a total of 7 possible stores we will update on every patch once the game reaches alpha state.

Throw in our other games with the same treatment. Please don't spread rumors that we are anything but customer friendly, buy wherever you like and you'll get the exact same game at the exact same time as everyone else.

There are a couple of choice developers who do per patch sales on this platform. Hence why users are worried about it.

How varied are the needs planned to be?  Will particular mons have particular desires?  Is it just food/water/sex/clean, or will there be some variations in there?

Like you mention the plant object.  Will it be like "cunnilingus meter low, find plant or entice nice photographer"?  lol

- All mons will have desires like boredom, hunger, etc just that the smart objects will have unique actions.

- The plant was just a possible example of an interaction, like say boredom being low enough they seek out entertainment via getting milked by a plant.

Fair enough!  I'm mostly just amused by the concept of mons seeking out favorite things, but I imagine that'd be very complex to implement.

It's still quite impressive what's being done with the AI tree in general. ^_^b

I love this game!!!

This game is awesome! The only game that I’ve downloaded and has kept my interest for longer than a month. I love the graphic style. I don’t understand how people can complain about the ads when this is a free game and the majority ads are optional, you get rewards after watching the ads like free diamonds, power ups, etc. I’ve unlocked all maps and almost all vehicles (except the last 2, the $20 vehicles) without having to buy anything. Yes it’ll take longer to unlock cars but you literally don’t have to buy anything to progress in the game. The only negative thing I could say about this game is the last 2 vehicles are a bit pricy at $20 each but if you think about it(at least for the tank) it would kinda ruin the game being indestructible and having infinite ammo. Please keep the ad/reward system going. Thank you devs for the last update and keep up the good work

This is a fun game

This was my favorite game for the longest time but of course doing the same stuff over and over got really old I’ve had this installed hoping that there would be a new update but it’s like the developers have forgotten about this game altogether I just wanna know if it’s gonna be any more updates or should I just delete it only reason I didn’t uninstall it is because I was hoping and waiting but if the developers forgotten about it then I should to if your not gonna update then you should invent another game just as awesome as this one

Amazing but not much money and some other stuff

Ok, it’s a great game, I can admit, but I wish the car and stuff wasn’t for money, I wish if you got hella amount of gems then you can get new cars. Next thing I suggest is meningitis able to make your character or buy one at least, One more last thing make a jump button, cause like almost every game has a jump button😑. Thank you bye, of btw the game is amazing!

No Safari Is Complete Without a Night Game Drive—Here Are 10 of the Best

Shivers sped down my spine as a hyena crept into our Jeep’s headlights in the night. Then another hyena joined, and further back, we saw a third and fourth set of eyes. We heard piercing cackles, and our safari guide Kebby Arabang, resident tour director for Abercrombie & Kent in Botswana, told us it was a hyena calling for back up in a stand-off with a lion.

We knew the lion—a lone male gorging on buffaloes near camp. We’d also seen the hyena—their den, their cubs, and their paw prints by my tent. I enjoyed dozens of game drives throughout my time in Botswana, but none left me as awestruck as this twilight expedition.

Around the world, a growing number of lodges now offer night safaris for travelers. These trips pair the animal kingdom’s after-dark excitement—up to 70 percent of species are active from dusk to dawn, after all—with a soft place to land and dine between excursions.

Botswana’s vast Okavango Delta is home to hundreds of diverse species, including many after-dark revelers: hyenas, lions, leopards, bush babies, and pangolins, to name a few. Night safaris aren’t allowed everywhere in the delta, but you can enjoy one with a stay at  Sanctuary Retreats’ Stanley’s Camp —the site of my eye-popping night drive on  A&K’s Botswana Safari in Style itinerary. The luxe tented camp flings you into the wild, with porches and a plunge pool overlooking a watering hole, plus inventive local and international cuisine made even more enjoyable by the soundtrack of nearby hippo grunts. The property’s private concession surrounds provide guests the opportunities for unique Okavango Delta experiences, from night drives to walking safaris.

Usangu Expedition Camp

Watch wildlife via thermal monocular technology

The new  Usangu Expedition Camp in southern Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park centers on citizen science, from big-cat collaring by day to watching and photographing wildlife with cutting-edge thermal monocular night vision technology after dark. These night safaris let you admire the animals without the disruptive beams of a flashlight, meaning creatures, like leopards are undisturbed—and therefore more likely to attempt a hunt. While nothing beats watching African animals at night, recounting the tales by a starlit campfire back at Usangu is a close second.

Admire the sights and sounds of the Amazon after dark

Sunset sparks a frenzy of activity in the Amazon. Few of India's National Parks allow safaris at night—arguably the best time to see the elusive tigers—but, luckily, Satpura Tiger Reserve is one of them. Satpura night drives run through the park’s buffer zones, and offer the chance to witness a host of creatures: leopards, sloths, wild dogs, and, of course, tigers. Book a night at the eight-suite  Bori Safari Lodge , a tranquil getaway within minutes of the park gate that offers a plunge pool with forest views, al fresco dining, and naturalist-led safaris around the clock.  

Rincón Del Socorro

See nocturnal species and stars in a biodiverse freshwater reserve

More than 4,000 plant and animal species reside in  Argentina’s 1.3 million-acre Iberá Natural Reserve . Wildlife across the protected area’s streams, lagoons, swamps, and marshes have bounced back after decades of commercial hunting and illegal animal trading. Now, you can admire the biodiversity in one of the most mesmerizing ways: a night safari, with on-foot or 4x4 vehicle excursions to see viscachas, gray foxes, and crab-eating raccoons.  AndBeyond offers the experience as part of select South America tours. Book your own trip to the reserve via the 11-room Rincón del Socorro , a reinvigorated cattle ranch that offers expert-led night safaris, onsite cycling trails, and a reserve-view restaurant with farm-to-table produce and traditional Argentinian barbecues.

Search for lions, aardwolves, honey badgers, and bush babies under the stars

Most wildlife travelers dream about visiting Kenya’s  Masai Mara National Reserve , but there’s a lesser-known and significantly less crowded safari escape just northwest of it: the 35,000-acre  Olare Motorogi Conservancy . The getaway, known for its action-packed lion viewing, protects the ecosystem’s animals and supports the local Masai people via community-based safari tourism. Unlike the Masai Mara National Reserve, night drives are allowed in Olare Motorogi Conservancy; they’re available via  Mahali Mzuri —Richard Branson’s posh 12-tent safari camp. You may see big cats like leopards or lions, or rarer aardwolves, porcupines, honey badgers, and bush babies. But a night safari isn’t the only time to catch these elusive creatures. From the camp’s outdoor dining to each tent’s private viewing deck, you can see and hear the conservancy’s inhabitants around the clock.

Skinnskatteberg

Listen for howls on a wolf safari

Sweden’s elusive wolf is easier seen than heard—and your best bet at either is after dark. On an overnight wolf safari with  Amazing Nature Scandinavia , expert guides take you out on foot, and in a van, through central Sweden’s liveliest wolf spots. Actually spotting the elusive wolves can be tricky, but there’s an 80 to 90 percent chance you’ll hear their howls. This seasonal summer adventure pairs with camping in a wolf-pack area; bookend the trip with a stay at a unique central Sweden getaway like  Nasets Marcusgard . The forested property features quirky overnight stays—think: a cylindrical pine-flanked pod with potential deer and fox sightings from bed—with a central gathering place for meals, a heated pool and sauna, and a collection of onsite and nearby hiking trails.

Nam Et-Phou Louey

A  late-night boat adventure through Laos’ remote Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park provides a first-hand glimpse at the country’s budding conservation success story. The trip starts with an evening boat ride, followed by a hike and dinner by a campfire, then the ultimate twilight treat: floating down the river beneath a blanket of darkness—with only one torchlight per boat to illuminate the potential leopards, porcupines, and gibbons en route. The journey concludes with a night in the park ecolodge’s traditional Lao bungalows. 

Local guides run the tour with support from partners like the Wildlife Conservation Society; this tourism model encourages park-adjacent communities to protect the region’s endangered species.  Book it as a standalone expedition with pre- and post-trip stays at  Xayphasouk Hotel , a modest property with spacious rooms and a hotel restaurant in one of the closest main towns, Sam Nuea (around four hours away by car). Alternatively, join a Laos itinerary by tour operator  Audley for an overnight in Nam Et-Phou Louey, then connect to your choice of half a dozen other destinations throughout the country. 

Warrigal Highland Rainforest Reserve

Take a moonlit walk among Australian wildlife

Admire the flying fox, tree kangaroo, ringtail possum, and a host of other tough-to-see Australian critters with a  Wild Watch night safari hosted by longtime birding and wildlife photography guide Jonathan Munro. The outing takes place in the largest single tract of tropical rainforest remaining in Australia, in the Misty Mountains southwest of Cairns (the gateway to  Australia’s Great Barrier Reef ). When the weather is crisp and clear, it's typical for those exploring to see 30 to 40 animals in a two-hour evening tour. Wild Watch also offers tours that display the area's orchids, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, reptiles, and more. Book a night nearby at the sleek new  Mercure Hotel Cairns, a bright and breezy 75-room getaway with a poolside restaurant serving fresh, locally sourced fare. Everglades National Park

See (and hear) the Everglades by night

Most visit the biodiverse  Everglades National Park by day, but half the fun is after dark—particularly on an  expert-led paddling tour . Possible nighttime wildlife sightings run the gamut: horned owls, bobcats, frogs, and even panthers. The soundtrack for the evening? A cacophony of lubber grasshoppers and frogs, who keep the entertainment going well into the morning. The tour runs for half the year, from December through March. Glamp nearby in Everglades Adventure Tours’ low-key Chickee Huts , a series of bungalows built by the Seminole Indians with thatched roofs, screened-in walls, and swamp and grassland panoramas. Alternatively, book a night at the luxe  JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort . Its upscale rooms—each with its own balcony—overlook the gulf and Marco Island’s powder-sugar sand. The property is roughly 35 minutes to the west of Everglades National Park.
