How to download YouTube videos using Safari or Firefox

If you’ve spent more than a couple of hours on the Web you understand that the thing is choked with videos—from YouTube to Vimeo to news and entertainment sites. There’s so much, in fact, that it’s hard to watch everything you want to when you’re sitting down in front of your computer. And because there is, it’s not uncommon to seek ways to capture that video for later viewing on other devices or when an Internet connection isn’t available.

Capturing Web video can be a one- or multi-step process, depending on how the original content is encoded and protected. For example, it’s fairly easy to download MPEG-4-encoded content and play those videos on your Mac and iOS devices because MPEG-4 is natively supported on these devices. However, many websites continue to offer videos encoded in the Flash (flv) format. While you can play these videos in a browser or with a third-party application such as the VideoLAN client (or in QuickTime Player if you’ve installed the Perian plug-in ), you must convert these to a format compatible with iOS devices. Easy or difficult, it’s possible to capture just about any video on the Web. Let’s explore how.

Downloading files with a Web browser

If you’re using Safari you’ll find that there’s no obvious command for capturing streaming YouTube videos, but it can be done with the browser’s built-in tools provided that you’re downloading a Flash file. For example, navigate to a YouTube video you want to capture and start it playing. Press Command-Option-A to produce Safari’s Activity window. In this window you’ll see the name of the video followed by the word YouTube . In the list of links below look for an entry of several megabytes that appears to be loading. Option-double-click on it and it will download to your Mac as an flv file. As mentioned earlier, you can then play this file with a third-party tool. Unfortunately, you can’t download MPEG-4 files using this method. For those files, turn to Firefox or a third-party tool.

Speaking of Firefox, its users have a better option thanks to the free DownloadHelper extension . Once you’ve installed the extension, a DownloadHelper icon appears in Firefox’s address bar at the top of the browser window, or in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window (we found different behavior on different Macs). Start playing a video and click on the icon and you’ll see one or more listings for the video. If you’re looking at a YouTube video (the extension supports downloads from many different sites) you’ll see multiple listings—some in Flash format and others in MPEG-4 format. Choose one of the MPEG-4 versions (standard or high definition, for example) and it downloads to your Mac, ready to play in iTunes, QuickTime Player, or another video player of your choosing. If a site offers only one version of the video—MPEG-4 or Flash—you’ll see the option to download only that file.

If that file is in the MPEG-4 format, you’re set. Just download and play it. However, if it’s a Flash file you may wish to convert it so you can play it in iTunes and on your iOS devices. DownloadHelper can do that but only if you’ve installed the FFMpeg or Mencoder libraries—a process that requires some knowledge of the Terminal application and the wherewithal to track down the correct library builds. Otherwise, there are many tools to convert your videos.

Third-party tools

Regrettably, not all websites provide video in MPEG-4 format. If you want to view downloaded flv files with an application that doesn’t support Flash, or watch them on your iOS device, you must convert them. There are a variety of ways to go about this.

But first a word on how to not go about it. If you search the Web for video conversion tools, you’ll find many of them. Most aren’t worth your while. These are poorly-built applications produced by companies that promote these tools via spam and fake reviews. Worse yet, some of them cost upwards of $40, which is far too much to pay when there are some perfectly fine tools that do the job for free.

One of those free tools is Video Monkey (   ), an application that borrows heavily from the beloved-but-now-discontinued VisualHub . Once you’ve downloaded a movie using one of the methods described earlier, just launch Video Monkey, drop your movie into its window, and choose the output device or video format you want to use. Video Monkey offers batch conversion and includes a quality slider. It can also add your converted movies to iTunes when it completes its work.

Shedworx’s free Smart Converter (Mac App Store link) is another good choice. It too can convert flv videos as well as audio files. Just drop your videos into the Smart Converter window, choose a preset (Apple TV, iPad, or iPhone/iPod, to name a few), and click Convert. The free version of Smart Converter doesn’t support batch processing however. If you want that, turn to the $10 Smart Converter Pro (Mac App Store link).

Although $15 isn’t free, it’s not terribly expensive either. If you’d prefer to capture and convert in one step, take a look at TastyApps’ Videobox . To use Videobox, just drag the URL for a video you want to download into the Videobox window. A mini-browser window appears that includes the contents of the page the video is posted on, and an entry for the video appears in Videobox’s window. Click on the Download icon and a Save As window appears. From the Output For pop-up menu, choose the format you’d like to save the video in—iDVD/iMovie, iPad, iPod Classic, iPod touch/iPhone, or Mac Viewing are some of the choices—and click the Save button. (Click the Show Settings button in this window and you can further adjust the video settings.) Videobox downloads and then converts the video.

Brute force

And then there’s the ugly way—using a screen capture utility to grab video and audio in real time. You can do this with QuickTime Player by choosing File -> New Screen Recording, but you won’t be able to capture the video’s audio until you install Cycling ’74’s free Soundflower. To do that, download and install Soundflower, open the Sound system preference, and choose Soundflower (2-ch) in the Output tab. Within QuickTime’s Screen Recording window, click on the triangle and under the Microphone heading choose Soundflower (2ch). Start the recording and then start the video playing.

The results from a QuickTime Player capture can be choppy, even on a fast Mac. In such cases, you may want to turn to a dedicated screen capture application such as Ambrosia Software’s $69 Snapz Pro X , Shinywhitebox’s $30 iShowU HD Pro, TechSmith’s $99 Camtasia 2 or Telestream’s $99 ScreenFlow 3 (   ).

The videos you download are saved to the Photos and the Files app. Navigating to download videos in the Photos app is quite easy. You can find it in the Albums > Recents . However, if you want to locate it in the Files app, follow the steps mentioned below. 

1. Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad. 

2. Head to the Browse tab and tap the iCloud Drive option. 

3. Now tap on the Downloads folder and you’ll find the downloaded videos in this tab. 

Download Videos from Social Media Apps and Websites 

Downloading videos from social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, etc., might not be ethical or even legal. Especially, if you want to download and share these videos or use the content in your videos, etc.

Coming to YouTube, it allows users to download videos for offline viewing within the app. These videos will not appear in the Photos or Files app and can only be accessed on YouTube. You might need a YouTube Premium subscription for some videos and resolutions (This is region specific). We have a guide that will help you download YouTube videos on your iPhone or iPad .

Now, if you upload your videos to YouTube (to store them privately as backup), then downloading these videos shouldn’t be a problem. You can look up websites that allow you to download videos from YouTube. However, please refrain from downloading videos from other creators and using them as it will come under copyright infringement laws.

If you want to download Instagram reels or videos, you can use websites like Snapinsta , Save Insta , etc. Again, please ensure that you do not circulate these videos or repurpose the content as it can land you in trouble.

How to get YouTube videos to play in Safari on Mac

Tell me if this feels familiar: you open up Safari on your Mac and head to YouTube to watch some videos. But a problem arises when you can't seem to play anything, and you keep getting the same message when you try: "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available".

There are a couple of ways that you can tackle this problem. First, there might be an issue between YouTube and one of your extensions. If disabling an errant extension doesn't work, you might also need to clear website data, which you can do by following the guide below.

If your YouTube problems stem from one of your extensions, you'll need to disable them all, then reactivate them one by one, refreshing YouTube with each activation to see which extension causes the problem.

• Open Safari from your Dock or Applications folder.
• Click Safari in the Menu bar.

• Click Preferences...
• Click Extensions .

• Click the checkbox next to an extension so that it is unchecked in order to disable the extension.
• Click the checkbox again if you want to turn the extension back on.

If you feel the need to uninstall the offending extension, here's how you go about it.

• Click on the extension you want to remove.
• Click Uninstall .

How to Download YouTube Videos on an iPhone

Is downloading YouTube videos legal?

This one’s a bit complicated. If you download videos to your iPhone using YouTube’s service (more on that below), it’s 100% on the up-and-up. However, the platform does not approve of downloading videos from its servers outside of that capacity. It’s actually against YouTube’s terms of service for app developers to make YouTube downloaders and put them on app stores.

That said, the company won’t do a thing about it if you do download videos from third-party solutions. Where they will take action is if you upload those videos, especially copyrighted videos, back online. So, play it safe: Download these videos only for your own personal use.

How to download videos using YouTube Premium

YouTube’s preferred method for downloading videos on your iPhone is, of course, by paying for the service. With YouTube Premium, you’ll find a convenient “Download” button next to most videos on the platform, so you can quickly save your favorite videos for offline viewing anytime.

There are other perks to YouTube Premium, including avoiding ads before videos and the high-quality “1080p Premium” bitrate , for $US13.99 per month . It’s an expensive way to download your YouTube videos, but it is the way YouTube approves of.

Use a shortcut

If you don’t have YouTube Premium, you can turn to your iPhone’s Shortcuts app. Shortcuts is a treasure-trove of powerful programs. Some of those just happen to be YouTube downloaders.

The problem is, these shortcuts tend to break fast. It’s not clear exactly why, but it’s possible YouTube frequently changes things on its end and stops these shortcuts from working. That wouldn’t be so bad if developers stuck around and patched the issues are they pop up, but, unfortunately, these shortcuts are often abandoned. So, when something goes wrong, the shortcut is useless.

One shortcut that I have found works is Sur . Sur is pretty straightforward: Once installed and run, you need to give it permission to connect to its host sites, then choose whether to paste a YouTube URL, or pull from your clipboard. Sur treats your URL as a “contact” to send to the site it uses to download the video, so you’ll need to give permission to send this “contact” to the site. Allow it to run, then allow Sur to connect to the Google Video URL. How long you wait from here depends on the size of the video in question, but once it’s done, tap “OK” on the pop-up to choose what you want to do with the video. Since this pulls up the share sheet, you can kind of do anything you want with it: You can save it to your iPhone or your Files app, send it through Messages or a third-party app, AirDrop it, save it to a Note, whatever you want to do.

A previous version of this article recommended JAYD (Just Another YouTube Downloader), and if you searching around the internet, you’ll find older posts about the shortcut as well. Unfortunately, it seems to have met the same fate as other YouTube downloaders, so we can’t recommend it anymore.

Use a YouTube downloader site (but be cautious)

Mobile browsing on iPhone has come a long way. In many respects, it’s just as capable as browsing on a Mac or PC. For example, you can actually use a YouTube downloader in Safari and download a YouTube video just as you would on desktop.

How to Download YouTube Videos

YouTube is an excellent source of information and entertainment, but it uses a lot of data when streaming video. This is especially true if you watch videos in Full HD or 4K, meaning you'll quickly use up your monthly allocation or start racking up your phone bill when you watch YouTube videos outside of a Wi-Fi connection.

So, to avoid unexpected costs and keep yourself entertained, download your favorite YouTube videos to your phone when you have an unlimited internet connection.

If you want to watch YouTube videos offline, you need to sign up for YouTube Premium. While this subscription gives you features like Background Play and Ad-Free viewing and comes with YouTube Music , it also lets you download YouTube videos to your devices, making YouTube Premium worth its monthly price .

Although there are other third-party ways to download any online video, we do not recommend using them. Some come with malware, and it's not easy to vet legitimate apps from those pretending to give you a 'free' service. Furthermore, these apps often go against YouTube's terms of service and could land you in hot water with copyright law.

To sign up for YouTube Premium, open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and tap the You tab at the bottom menu. From there, swipe up and tap Get YouTube Premium . From there, you can sign up for a free trial if you still have one or choose the following plans: YouTube Premium Individual, YouTube Premium Family , or YouTube Premium Student. Prices vary between regions but start at $11.99 monthly in the US.

However, note that YouTube Premium and the download feature are unavailable in all locations. So, try the free trial first and see if the feature works for you before committing to a subscription.

Once you have a YouTube Premium subscription, it's easy to download a YouTube video to your device. Just find a video you like and play it on the YouTube app. Under the channel name and subscribe button, tap Download , and the video will save to your phone.

If you've already downloaded the video, the button will change to Downloaded . Tap on it again and confirm the Delete from downloads message to delete the download and save storage on your smartphone .

However, the download feature only works on long-form YouTube videos. As of the time of writing, we haven't found a download feature for YouTube Shorts on the YouTube app. You must also connect your phone to the internet every 48 hours to retain access to your downloaded videos.

This ensures the video library remains up-to-date with its online version. If any information changes about the videos you've downloaded, they'll be updated when you reconnect to the internet. Also, if a creator takes down a video you've already downloaded, it will no longer be available for viewing.

Here's how to find the videos you downloaded on the YouTube app. When you launch YouTube, tap the You tab, then tap Downloads . From there, you should see all the videos you downloaded on YouTube.

If you haven't turned it on yet, YouTube will also offer Smart downloads , which allows the app to download recommended videos automatically, ensuring you have something to watch even when you're not connected to the internet.

You can also activate this and set a storage limit by tapping the You tab, then Settings > Background & downloads . Tap the Smart downloads slider to activate this feature, then tap Adjust Smart downloads to adjust the storage used automatically or manually. You can also change the downloaded video quality of smart downloads in the Adjust Smart downloads menu. But if you want to change the video quality of manually downloaded videos, you can do so by going to Settings > Background & downloads > Download quality .

A YouTube Premium subscription might cost a few dollars a month, but it definitely comes with many benefits. Aside from being able to legally download YouTube videos to your smartphone, tablet, or even PC, you also get background play, which is useful for listening to podcasts, and YouTube Music, which is a good alternative to Spotify for the casual listener.

4 Easy Ways to Save Money on Google Storage

You don't have to pay more for digital storage.

Google Drive, Google's cloud storage service, has over 2 billion active monthly users, according to Google partner Patronum . And if you're one of those people, you might know you're account gets only 15GB of free space. That storage can fill up fast though, and when it does, you'll see a message asking you to upgrade to a  Google One plan. But you don't have to spend any money on more storage. Instead, here are some tips on how to free up some room in your digital filing cabinet for free.

We recommend trying these tips on your desktop rather than a mobile device, as you'll have an easier time sorting through and managing files. But we'll walk you through both processes if you have access only to a mobile device.

1. Delete large files first

If you want to keep the majority of your items in Google Drive and Gmail, you can free up space by sorting each service by file size and deleting only one or two large files instead of a few dozen smaller items. Deleting one or two videos that take up multiple megabytes of space is easier than sorting through hundreds of old documents of similar file size to decide which can be deleted.

Delete files by size in Google Drive

Here's how to delete files by size on your desktop.

1. Log in to your Google Drive account. 2. Click Storage in the menu on the left side of the screen. 3. The Storage page should list your files from largest to smallest, but if not, click Storage used on the right side of the screen. The files should now be ordered from largest to smallest. 4. Click on the large files you want to delete to select them. You can select multiple files by holding the Shift key on your keyboard. 5. After selecting the files for deletion, click either the trash bin that appears near the top of the screen, or click and drag the large files to Trash on the left side of the screen. 

However, you're not finished when the items are in the Trash . From there, click Trash on the left side of the screen to go to the Trash menu. Then, click Empty Trash on the right side of the screen, and then click Empty forever .

You can also delete files by size on your mobile device. Here's how.

1. Open your Google Drive app and log in to your account. 2. Tap Files in the bottom-right corner of the screen. 3. Tap Name underneath My Drive near the top of the screen. 4. Tap Storage used . This will arrange your files from largest to smallest. You can select My Drive and then  Storage used  again to list your files by smallest to largest. 5. Tap the three dots ( ... ) next to the item you want to delete. 6. Tap Remove then Move to trash.

Google says in the app that Items in your Trash  are deleted forever automatically after 30 days. But if you want to speed things up and empty your trash now, here's how. 

1. Tap the hamburger icon (three stacked lines) in the top-left corner of the screen next to Search in Drive .  2. Tap Trash . 3. Tap the three dots ( ... ) in the top-right corner of the screen. 4. Tap Empty trash .

Whether you need to make more space, or just to keep your Gmail tidy, it's easy to make room for storage in the service.

Delete files by size in Gmail

You can also delete your files by size in Gmail. Here's how on desktop.

1. Log in to your Gmail account.  2. Type has:attachment larger:10MB  into the search bar and hit Search . This will show you all emails that have attachments larger than 10MB, from largest to smallest. You can use this format to filter by other size files, not just 10MB files. 3. Check the boxes to the left of each email you want to delete, then click the Trash icon across the top of your screen. It should be under Conversations . 4. Click Trash on the left side of the screen to go to the Trash menu. If you don't see Trash , click More  and Trash should be in the expanded menu.  5. Click Empty trash now at the top of the screen.

You can delete files int he Gmail app in a similar way, too. Here's how.

1. Open your Gmail app and log in to your account. 2.  Type  has:attachment larger:10MB  into the search bar and hit  Search . This will show you all emails that have attachments larger than 10MB, from largest to smallest. You can use this format to filter by other size files, not just 10MB files. 3. Tap into the email you want to delete. 4. Tap the trash bin icon across the top of your screen. 5. Tap <  in the top-left corner of your screen. 6. Tap the hamburger icon in the top-left corner of the screen next to Search in mail .  7. Tap Trash . 8. Tap Empty trash now .

Note that once a file goes to Trash , it'll automatically delete after 30 days.

2. Empty your Gmail spam folder

It's easy to forget about emptying your spam folder, and it can take up unnecessary data in your Gmail account. Emptying your spam folder -- and your social or promotions folders -- is another way to make space.

Here's how to empty your Spam folder on desktop.

1. Log in to your Gmail account. 2. Once you're logged in, click Spam on the left side of the screen. If you don't see Spam , click More and Spam should be in the expanded menu. 3. In your Spam folder, click Delete all spam messages now . 4. Click OK in the pop up.

And here's how to empty your Spam folder in the mobile app.

1. Open the Gmail app and log in to your account. 2. Tap the hamburger icon in the top-left corner of the screen next to Search in mail. 3. Tap Spam. 4. Tap Delete all spam messages now or Empty spam now.

Don't let spam bog down your Gmail.

3. Clean up your Google Photos

Google also includes Google Photos in the 15GB of free storage it gives its users. Photos and videos can take up more space than text-based files, especially higher-quality ones, so it's a good idea to go through and delete old photos and videos to make room.

There's no option to arrange your photos and videos from largest to smallest like in Google Drive and Gmail, so you'll have to go through and delete items manually. You can check how much space a file is taking up by selecting it and clicking the "i" for information from the top menu. 

Here's how to delete photos and videos from Google Photos on your desktop.

1. Open and log in to Google Photos . 2. Scroll your mouse over photos and videos you want to delete and click the gray check mark icon in the top-left corner of the photo or video. Do this to as many photos and videos as you want. 3. Click the trash icon in the top-right corner of the screen. 4. Click Move to trash . 5. Click Trash on the left side of the screen. 6. Click Empty trash near the top-right corner of your screen. 7. Click Empty trash again, and you're set.

And here's hot to delete photos and videos from the Google Photos mobile app.

A note for Apple users: If your Gmail is linked to your iCloud account, the two digital storage spaces may be also linked. This means that when enabling the Backup & sync feature on Google Photos, all your local photos on your iPhone will be displayed on Google Photos. If you delete a photo on Google Photos, then the local photo on your iPhone will also be removed. And when the local photo is removed, it won't show up on iCloud. You'll be able to tell if this is you when you try to delete an image on Google Photos -- a pop-up window will let you know you're about to delete from both places.

1. Open and log in to Google Photos. 2. Tap the photo or video you want to delete. 3. Tap the trash can icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. 4. Tap Delete .  5. Tap Library in the bottom-right corner of the screen. 6. Tap Trash . 7. Tap the three dots ( ... ) in the top-right corner of the screen. 8. Tap Empty trash . 9. Tap Delete . 

If you don't click or tap Empty trash on either desktop or mobile, the photos and videos you've deleted will automatically be deleted after 60 days. 

Bonus tip: You can reduce the file size of some photos and videos in Google Photos. Doing so will allow you to regain some space, but it will reduce the quality of your media. You can learn more about this from Google Support here .

Photos and videos in Google Photos can take up a lot of storage.

4. When all else fails, download your files to your desktop

If your storage is still almost full and you can't part with any more items from your Google Drive, Gmail or Google Photos, you can download your items and store them directly on your computer.

Here's how to download all your Google files for storage on another hard drive.

1. Open and log in to your Google Drive or Google Photos account on your desktop. 2. Select the files or photos you want to download. 3. Click the three stacked dots in the upper-right corner of your screen. 4. Click Download . Note that Gmail will download messages as a .eml file. 5. Once the items are downloaded and moved onto your hard drive, feel free to delete them from your account and empty your trash bins.

You can download emails from Gmail in much the same way, but you have to download your emails one at a time. While this makes downloading your emails more tedious, but still possible. Here's how to download your emails from Gmail.

1.  Open and log in to your Gmail account on your desktop. 2.  Click into the email you want to download. 3. Click the three stacked dots in the upper-right corner of your screen. 4.  Click  Download . Your emails will download as a .eml file. 5.  Once your emails are downloaded and moved onto your hard drive, feel free to delete them from your account and empty your trash bins.

Black people disproportionately affected by hectic work schedules

A new study that analyzed work schedules, health patterns and sleep habits, found that people with "stable" employment patterns experienced better sleep and health.

Hectic work schedules have proven to be harmful to people’s long-term mental and physical health.

Wen-Jui Han, a professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work, examined “the critical role employment plays in our health by examining how employment patterns throughout our working lives, based on work schedules, may shape our health at age 50.” Findings were published in the scientific journal PLOS One, People magazine reported.

The study analyzed data from a long-running survey of Americans, ages 22-49 years old, regarding their work schedules, health patterns and sleep habits, concluding that people with “stable” employment patterns had better sleep and health.

“Our work now is making us sick and poor,” Han told NPR. “Work is supposed to allow us to accumulate resources. But, for a lot of people, their work doesn’t allow them to do so. They actually become more and more miserable over time.”

The study examined the impact of challenging work conditions on different groups’ health, considering factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, education, immigration status and geographic location. 

Black people with lower levels of education disproportionately reported working more night shifts, having irregular schedules, and getting less sleep than other groups, such as white people or those with higher levels of education.

Han’s research indicates that the impact of work schedules on an individual’s positive and negative well-being can accumulate over time.

Han also reported poor health and sleep outcomes in people who worked regular day shifts earlier in life and later transitioned to “volatile” schedules. The professor warned about the well-known long-term health impacts, such as depression, anxiety, obesity and a higher risk of having a stroke. 

The Cleveland Clinic notes that a lack of sleep — which can be associated with working longer hours — can cause many short- and long-term health problems, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, and increase the risk for diseases like Type 2 diabetes .

“Work that is supposed to bring resources to help us sustain a decent life has now become a vulnerability to a healthy life due to the increasing precarity in our work arrangements in this increasingly unequal society,” Han told Science Daily. “People with vulnerable social positions (e.g., females, Blacks, low-education) disproportionately shoulder these health consequences.”

Donald trump criminal trial man declared dead ... after self-immolation.

The man who lit himself ablaze outside the Trump trial courthouse in NYC has died.

Max Azzarello was rushed in critical condition to a hospital Friday after he doused himself with a flammable liquid and set himself on fire outside Manhattan Criminal Court, where jury selection for Donald Trump's hush money criminal trial was winding down.

Azzarello, an alleged conspiracy theorist, died later that night from massive burns to his body.

Before carrying out his self-immolation , the Florida resident reportedly traveled to a SoHo hotel, where he booked a room. Then he went over to a park near the courthouse and threw a bunch of pamphlets into the air while shouting incoherently before putting his deadly plan into motion.

CNN reporters were present for the shocking display of flames engulfing Azzarello, filming it all with their cameras.

The insanity didn't stop there ... a rambling, politically-charged manifesto surfaced that was seemingly tied to Azzarello , who apparently had his own "Substack" page titled The Ponzi Papers.

On the page, Azzarello purportedly said he was going to set himself on fire outside the Trump trial to "draw attention to an urgent and important discovery."

He then allegedly went off on a tangent about being victims of a totalitarian con and the government that "is about to hit us with an apocalyptic fascist world coup."
