By default, Safari on your iPhone and iPad blocks any website pop-ups. If a site requires these tiny windows to function, you can disable Safari's built-in pop-up blocker. We'll show you how to do that.

One major reason to enable pop-ups in Safari is to allow websites, such as your bank's website, to display pop-up windows they require to operate. On some sites, without these tiny windows, you can't do what you need to.

Later, when you've finished your task, you can re-enable the built-in pop-up blocker, as we'll explain below.

To disable Safari's pop-up blocker on your iPhone or iPad, first, open the Settings app on your phone. Settings is where many of Safari's options are located.

On the Settings page, scroll down and tap "Safari."

On the "Safari" page that opens, you have various options to configure for your web browser . Here, at the bottom of the "General" section, toggle off the "Block Pop-Ups" option.

To re-enable the built-in pop-up blocker, simply turn on the "Block Pop-Ups" option again.

Safari's pop-up blocker is now disabled, and your sites can now launch those small windows while you are browsing in this browser. Enjoy!

It's important you learn how to block pop-ups on Safari when you're using the iPhone or iPad version of the browser. Despite being some of the best phones and best tablets around, iPhones and iPads are not immune to pop-ups.

As you may already know, pop-ups are a menace. Not only do they get in the way of the content you're trying to read or watch, they can also present security concerns, directing you to nefarious websites. Needless to say, then, blocking them is pretty much a necessity.

But how do you block pop-ups on your iPhone? You'd be forgiven for thinking you have to sign up for or purchase one of the best ad blockers . But although those are great, luckily, you don't need them — your iPhone comes pre-loaded with a Safari pop-up blocker. All you need to do is make sure it's turned on, and this guide is here to show you how. 

Read on to see how to block pop-ups on Safari for iOS and iPadOS.

1. Open the Settings app , then scroll down and tap Safari .

2. Toggle on Block Pop-ups .

That's really all there is to it. Safari will now block pop-ups for you, meaning you don't have to think about them again. How to allow pop-ups in Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac

It seems like we put so much effort into blocking things like pop-ups and ads when we’re browsing the web that we forget about sites that actually use pop-ups for good reasons. It could be a shopping site where you get a confirmation, a CMS where you can use tools, or a social site where you log in.

In Safari on iPhone or iPad, you can allow pop-ups globally; and on Mac, you can even allow them just for the specific sites you want. Here’s how to do both.

Allow pop-ups in Safari on iPhone and iPad

On iPhone and iPad, you cannot currently specify which sites you want to allow pop-ups for. It’s a global setting that you can enable or disable. The best option to allow pop-ups for a particular site is to turn off the setting, visit the website you want to see the pop-ups for, and then turn the setting back on.

Open Settings and select Safari . Turn off the toggle for Block Pop-ups .

When you finish visiting the site whose pop-ups you want to see, you should strongly consider turning the Block Pop-ups setting back on. Otherwise, you could end up inundated with ads or even unsafe pop-ups on your device.

Allow pop-ups in Safari on Mac

You have a couple of ways to allow pop-ups in Safari on Mac for the sites you trust. You can do this in the Preferences or with the site active in Safari. By taking a few moments to configure certain sites, you’ll save some aggravation later, waiting for that pop-up that never comes.

Allow when on the website

Suppose you clicked a link that triggered a new pop-up window. But if you have restricted pop-up windows in Preferences, the pop-up window won’t open and display a message temporarily in the Safari address bar. Besides that, it will show a tiny pop-up icon . Simply click that icon in the address bar, and it will open the blocked pop-up window.

When starting a live chat with Apple Support or downloading booked train tickets, I always use this method to allow the website to open the requested pop-up window.

Allow pop-ups in Preferences

• Open Safari and click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar.
• Select the Websites tab.
• On the left, scroll down to and pick Pop-Up Windows .
• To the right, you have your Currently Open Websites at the top with any Configured Websites at the bottom. Next to each, select the drop-down box and pick Allow for those you want to allow pop-ups.

For any sites that you don’t want to allow or that you want to be notified, select either Block or Block and Notify in that drop-down box.

At the bottom, next to When visiting other websites , you have a drop-down box with those three options as well. This is a global setting that covers all other sites you visit that you have not yet configured.

Allow pop-ups in the Safari window

• Right-click the address bar for the site you’re viewing and select Settings for site name or Settings For This Website .
• In the small window that appears, go down to Pop-up Windows .
• Use the drop-down box to choose Allow to see pop-ups for that website. Obviously, you can choose Block or Block and Notify for those you don’t want to see pop-ups.

When you use this method to adjust pop-ups for particular websites, these sites will then be added to the Configured Websites list in your Preferences, as explained above.

Hopefully, Apple will offer the ability to configure pop-ups for specific sites in Safari on iPhone and iPad at some point, just like on Mac. But in the meantime, you do have a way to allow pop-ups for the sites you want on all your devices.

• Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
• Tap on Safari.

• Open the Safari browser and browse the web casually. The changes have been implemented. If not, force close the Safari app or restart your iOS device

Sometimes, when you are making a payment, filling an exam form, or visiting a government website to fill a form, you may have to allow pop-ups. To turn off the pop-up blocker in Safari, follow the above steps and turn the toggle OFF. Now open Safari and refresh the page or tap again on the option which triggered a pop-up tab.

• Open Safari and click on Safari from the top menu bar. (next to Apple icon)

• Click Websites.
• From the left sidebar, click Pop-up Windows.

Also, in the space above, you will see configured sites. This has URLs you have allowed/blocked to open pop-ups in the past. You can click on the dropdown option and select ‘Allow’ or ‘Block’ for that particular website.

To completely turn off pop-up blocking for Safari on Mac, follow the same steps, and choose to Allow for ‘When visiting other websites.’

This is all about enabling pop-up blockers on iOS and macOS devices. As discussed above, some websites will necessarily need to open a pop-up for login or authentication, or displaying a pdf, or completing a payment, or genuine customer care live chat. In such cases, you will have to turn this feature off.

New iOS App Blocks Those Annoying 'Open in App' Pop-Ups in Safari

You've probably experienced visiting a website like Reddit or LinkedIn on your iPhone only to be greeted with an annoying, almost full-screen pop-up urging you to view the content in their app instead of on the website.

Thankfully, there is a new way to block these pop-ups within Safari on ‌iPhone‌ and iPad . Developer Alex Zamoshchin has created a new Safari extension called "Banish" (via Daring Fireball ) that can run on iOS and iPadOS and is designed to specifically get rid of those pop-ups. The app, which costs $2, helps eliminate a majority of those pop-ups in popular web versions of apps, but it doesn’t get rid of similar banners that show up at the top of Safari to recommend opening the current page in an installed app.

The banner at the top of Safari is built into Safari and WebKit itself, so to get rid of those, you'll have to uninstall the respective app from your device. Banish, instead, gets rid of pop-ups implemented in the websites themselves.

To use Banish, download it from the App Store and follow the on-screen instructions to give the app the needed permission within Settings, Safari, and Extensions. You can learn more about Banish here .

That’s understandable, as advertising makes up the bulk of revenue, but that also means you have to disable pop-ups to access content. Here’s how to turn off pop-up blocker on iPhone.

How to Turn off Pop Up Blocker in Safari

Most people don’t realize that Safari has a built-in pop-up blocker that works pretty well. In fact, it rarely causes problems with pages loading properly, and it does remove annoying pop-ups. However, Safari’s pop-up blocker does not remove ads like tools commonly found on computer web browsers. If you suspect Safari’s pop-up blocker causes issues with page loading, then disable it with these steps.

• Open the Settings app.

Third-Party Pop-Up Blockers on iPhones

When problems persist after turning off Safari’s built-in pop-up blocker, it’s a good idea to check your iPhone for a third-party ad-blocker. These work a little differently because they block ads and annoying pop-ups. Ad-blockers can prevent pages from loading properly, particularly news sites. Many news sites and blogs are wholly reliant on advertising to survive.

How to Turn Off Third-Party Pop-Up Blocker on iPhone

Turning off a third-party pop-up blocker on an iPhone is really easy. However, it is best to first try whitelisting a page. This means the pop-up blocker will essentially ignore any ads on the listed website. Most pop-up blockers support whitelisting via the app. Otherwise, you will have to temporarily turn off ad-blocking and delete the app entirely.

• Find and open the pop-up blocker app on your iPhone. (I am using the AdBlock Plus app)

Third-party pop-ups and ad-blockers are available in the Apple App Store. From there, you can install and delete them like any other application. This functionality is a little different than a conventional browser plug-in since the app is always visible on the iPhone’s home screen. Keep in mind that these apps typically block ads in Safari, but not other iPhone web browsers, such as Google Chrome .

With so many people using ad-blockers, these companies have little choice but to prevent those people from accessing the site. This barrier requires the reader to stop blocking ads before they can view the page. Don’t forget that ad-blockers aren’t perfect and can remove important page parts. All the reader has to do is whitelist the website so the ad-blocker doesn’t run on it or disable it.

This may go without saying, but unless you have a specific reason to disable the pop-up blocker in Safari for iOS you will probably want to leave the feature enabled (or turn it on if it is currently disabled). It’s pretty obvious when a popup blocker is preventing the proper usage of a website, so it’s not really a Safari troubleshooting trick and there isn’t much of a mystery involved when popup prevention is interfering with a sites functionality. It’s also a good idea to re-enable the popup blocker in Safari for iOS after you are done using whatever site required it, so that you can prevent the more annoying type of popups from showing up in the future.

How to Disable (or Enable) Safari Pop-Up Blocker in iOS

If you disable the pop-up blocker in iOS, you will allow popups to appear in Safari. If you enable the pop-up blocker in iOS, you will prevent popups appearing in Safari. Here is the appropriate setting to toggle as needed:

• Open the “Settings” app in iOS and go to “Safari”
• Under the General Safari settings, toggle the switch next to “Block Pop-ups” to the OFF position to disable the popup blocker, or the ON position to enable the pop-up blocker in Safari

• Return to Safari and browse the web as usual, the change will immediately carry over

You don’t need to reboot or relaunch Safari, simply toggling the switch off or on will have an immediate impact on whether or not websites and webpages in Safari can open a new pop-up window in Safari on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Keep in mind that pop-ups are almost always opened in Safari will open as a new tab, meaning they can be accessed from the tab viewer, which looks like two overlapping squares.

As mentioned, most users will want to leave the pop-up blocker enabled in iOS Safari. But sometimes turning it off is a necessity. Typically such a situation occurs on some financial websites and login services, often where a temporary pop-up will appear as a pass through, or to display some type of relevant information like a PDF, a report, or authentication details. Of course if you have the pop-up blocker enabled when you try to use one of those types of sites on an iPhone or iPad, the website will usually just fail to work properly and you won’t see the data requested.

Perhaps a future version of Safari for iOS will allow individual websites to open pop-ups as needed, like what is possible with Google Chrome on the desktop, but in the meantime you can control the pop-up blocker and toggle it off and on again easily through iOS Settings on a Safari-wide browsing experience.

This is obviously relevant to iPhone and iPad with Safari, but Safari for Mac also can allow pop-up windows if needed there as well.

This is the first time turn off

Sir actually i have forgot my icloud password so how i can delect this account so that i can make new account

MSN articles I try to post a comment pops up a block message to open up facebook shows, “This site is attempting to pop-up a window.” I went into Safari settings and disabled block pop-up, but it still has the same message. I then had facebook app signed in and website signed in on iPad and same block message. Had refresh article page and same thing.

Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari

Find out how to block pop-up windows and handle persistent ads on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Pop-ups can be ads, notices, offers or alerts that open in your current browser window, in a new window or in another tab. Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics, such as warnings or prizes, to trick you into believing they’re from Apple or another trusted company, so that you’ll share personal or financial information. Or they might claim to offer free downloads, software updates or plug-ins to try to trick you into installing unwanted software.

Use these tips to help manage pop-ups and other unwanted interruptions.

Avoid interacting with pop-ups

Unless you’re confident that they are a legitimate ad, avoid interacting with pop-ups or web pages that seem to take over your screen.

• If you see an annoying pop-up ad in Safari, you can go to the Search field and enter a new URL or search term to browse to a new site. If you can’t see the Search field on your iPhone or iPad, tap the top of the screen to make it appear.
• Some pop-ups and ads have fake buttons that resemble a close button, so use caution if you try to close a pop-up or ad. If you're not sure, avoid interacting with it and close the Safari window or tab.
• On your Mac, you can quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. This prevents Safari from automatically reopening any windows or tabs that were open. 

Update your software

Always  install the latest software updates  for all of your Apple products. Many software releases have important security updates and may include improvements that help to control pop-ups.

The safest way to download apps for your Mac is from the App Store. If you need software that isn’t available from the App Store, get it directly from the developer or another reliable source, rather than through an ad or link.

Check Safari settings

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari.

• Turn on Block Pop-ups.
• Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences) from the menu bar.

• In the Websites tab , you can configure options to  allow or block some or all pop-ups .
• In the Security tab , turn on the setting to warn when visiting a fraudulent website.

If adware or other unwanted software is installed on Mac

If you see pop-ups on your Mac that just won’t go away, you might have unintentionally downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software) or other unwanted software. Certain third-party download sites might include software that you don’t want along with the software that you do.

If you think that you might have malware or adware on your Mac:

• Update to the latest version of macOS. If your Mac is already using the latest version, restart your Mac. macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when restarting.
• Check your Applications folder to see if you have any apps that you don't expect. You can  uninstall those apps .
• Check the Extensions tab in Safari settings to see if you installed any unnecessary extensions. You can  turn extensions off .

Has anyone figured out how to remove this annoying "select an edition" pop-up window. Its driving me insane!

You can select a different language and then go on but next time you open a window the " Select an edition" pop up comes back. I guess Yahoo does not want us around anymore or they would not make us do this.
