sec softball tour

The SEC softball regular season has come to a close, and seeding for the SEC Tournament was finalized Sunday.

The tournament will start Tuesday, May 9, with the championship set for Saturday, May 13, at Bogle Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Razorbacks are the defending champions.

Tennessee clinched the SEC regular-season championship last week with a win over second-place Georgia. Alabama softball , Arkansas and Auburn were tied for third heading into the final weekend, with the Razorbacks and Tigers holding tiebreakers over the Crimson Tide. Those results held up in the final three games; Auburn finished third and Arkansas fourth.

The top four seeds earned a double bye in the tournament. The bottom two teams in the conference standings will play in a play-in game Tuesday, with a full slate of games Wednesday.

SEC softball power rankings: Two teams emerge as frontrunners for regular-season title

sec softball tour

Two teams are emerging as the frontrunners for the SEC softball title – the only shame is we won't get to see them square off this season.

Tennessee , which swept the SEC titles last season, leads the pack at 10-2, and Florida is right behind at 9-3. The next closest team is Texas A&M at 10-5, but it's looking more and more like a two-team race for the regular-season championship. Unfortunately, Florida and Tennessee do not play each other – we can only hope for an SEC Tournament title game matchup.

Here's where teams stack up in this week's SEC softball power rankings with a month left in the regular season.

1. Tennessee

Very few teams can go without their star player, but Tennessee is one of them. The No. 4 Lady Vols overcame the absence of Kiki Milloy due to injury and won the series against then-No. 3 Georgia. The reigning champs continue to dominate and time is ticking for everyone else to catch up.

Last week: 1

Record: 30-6

The Gators flipped the script last week with a comeback walk-off win to clinch the LSU series. No. 9 Florida was just a victim to an epic comeback the week before, but it turned the tables last week and won a thriller after trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning. Talk about comeback kids.

Last week: 2

Record: 34-6

3. Arkansas

No. 17 Arkansas got a series win against then-No. 11 Missouri for the first time since 2018. Arkansas has flown a bit under the radar as one of the stronger teams in the SEC, which feels strange to say considering it swept the SEC titles two years ago.

Last week: 4

Record: 28-10

The Bulldogs had only been held to one run in one game before last week, and then they ran into Tennessee's pitching. No. 7 Georgia scored just one run in its two losses and only scored three runs across in its win. Georgia's bats will be fine, but everyone should be scared of UT's pitching.

Last week: 5

Record: 31-8

The Tigers were so close to a massive series win over Florida, but it only came out on top in one of the two extra-inning thrillers. This isn't the first time No. 6 LSU has been hurt by errors, though, and giving up a walk-off win from an error is concerning.

Last week: 3

Record: 31-6

6. Texas A&M

Barely going 2-1 against Kentucky isn't an impressive outing, especially when the Aggies lost 1-0 to miss out on the sweep. But No. 11 Texas A&M is the only team besides Tennessee to have 10 wins in the SEC – its only problem is it has five losses, too.

Last week: 7

7. Mississippi State

Shutting out No. 23 South Carolina twice would be more impressive if the Gamecocks had more than two players hitting above .300. But shutouts are still notable, and Mississippi State's pitching dominated in Columbia to bring home the series win for the No. 16 Bulldogs.

Last week: 9

No. 12 Alabama took care of business with the only sweep last week. Sure, it was against Ole Miss, which has suffered three straight sweeps. But the Tide couldn't be trusted to beat Kentucky, which is 3-9 in the SEC. So let's celebrate the wins for Alabama when they come.

Last week: 10

Record: 26-8

9. Missouri

Missouri has had two SEC road series so far, and it has lost them both – at least this time the No. 14 Tigers didn't get swept, snagging a run-rule win at No. 19 Arkansas last Saturday. The good news for the Tigers: They play Florida at home this week, so they might have a shot.

Last week: 6

Record: 30-10

10. South Carolina

The No. 23 Gamecocks got shut out in three of their last four games, including against in-state rival Clemson, which didn't even have Valerie Cagle available. South Carolina's hitting is getting worse as the season wears on, and it's to the point I almost feel bad for them.

Record: 26-10

11. Kentucky

Now, I actually feel bad for Kentucky, which was infuriatingly close to a series win in College Station last week. The Wildcats lost the first game 5-4 and the second 10-9. They won the series finale 1-0, but what a brutal way to lose a series.

Last week: 11

Record: 24-14

Auburn played a nonconference home invitational, which are usually to add some wins to your resume. But it ended up losing a game to Georgia Tech, which isn't a great sign going into its series with LSU in Baton Rouge.

Last week: 12

Record: 21-12-1

13. Ole Miss

I think we can officially say Ole Miss peaked too early this season with its series win over LSU in Baton Rouge. The Rebs have lost 10 of the 11 games since then, dropping three straight SEC series and even went 1-1 against UT Martin. Woof.

Last week: 13

Record: 21-18

Sec softball power rankings: vols, gators take care of business, share this article.

We are less than a month away from the start of the SEC softball tournament, and the conference is starting to take shape.

Tennessee and Florida continue to prove that they are tough outs, while the middle of the pack is beginning to form their own identities. This weekend’s slate will feature several important matchups, with none bigger than the showdown between Alabama and Texas A&M at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, as both teams have plenty to prove this weekend. Speaking of plenty to prove, Mississippi State will get a great chance to show how solid of a team they are this weekend against Tennessee. Arkansas-South Carolina is another notable series to keep an eye on.

Here’s a look at how each team is performing heading into week six of the SEC conference slate.

Record: 20-18-1 (3-12 SEC)

Ole Miss has not found much success since winning the series at LSU last month. The Rebels were swept for the third straight series last weekend at Alabama and will look to regroup this weekend with an out-of-conference series against Western Kentucky.

Record: 21-12-1 (3-9 SEC)

Auburn took a much-needed break from SEC play last weekend to host the War Eagle Classic, where they finished 3-1 with wins over Louisiana Tech and Georgia Tech. Auburn will look to carry the momentum gained from last weekend’s performance into Baton Rouge for a series with LSU. Will Auburn finally earn its first SEC weekend series win?

Record: 27-13-1 (4-8 SEC)

The offense was at a premium for No. 23 South Carolina last weekend, as they fell in two of three games to Mississippi State at home. The Gamecocks scored just three runs all weekend, with all three coming in the final game of the series.

South Carolina will look to earn its first SEC series win over a ranked opponent this weekend when it hosts Arkansas for a three-game series in Columbia.

Kentucky’s record is not indicative of how well they have performed this season. The Wildcats have a series win over Alabama and went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M last weekend.

Record: 30-10 (5-7 SEC)

The early season fire from No. 14 Missouri has begun to smolder as a series loss to Arkansas has the Tigers under .500 in SEC play. Missouri dominated Saturday’s game by taking down the Razorbacks, 12-3 in five innings. The first four batters in the lineup combined to score nine runs, with Kara Daly leading the way with three RBI.

Missouri will end the SEC slate by facing four straight ranked teams, starting this weekend at home with No. 9 Florida.

The No. 12 Crimson Tide evened its SEC record by sweeping Ole Miss last weekend in Tuscaloosa, dominating the series by outscoring the Rebels 14-2 in the three-game set. Pitchers Kayla Beaver and Jocelyn Briski earned honors from the SEC for their weekend performance.

The most intriguing series of the weekend will take place at the Rhoads House when Alabama hosts Texas A&M. A great showing against the Aggies could see the Tide take a giant leap in next week’s rankings.

No. 7 Georgia continues to lead the conference in home runs with 61, but they have struggled to solidify a key SEC series win since winning two games in Tuscaloosa last month. No. 11 Texas A&M’s recent series with Kentucky came with an unexpected challenge. The Aggies won two of three games over bottom-dweller Kentucky, with all three games being decided by one run.

Texas A&M appeared to have decided Saturday’s fate by building a 10-3 lead over the Wildcats. However, Kentucky chipped away and ultimately scored four runs in the 7th inning to cut the deficit to one run. Texas A&M finally stopped the bleeding to win 10-9, clinching the series.

No. 9 Florida won a tight series over No. 6 LSU last weekend by winning two of three games in the series in Gainesville. In what was expected to be an offensive clinic, neither team scored more than six runs in a game, nor did any team win by more than two runs.

Florida can thank LSU for Sunday’s deciding win. Tied 5-5 in the 8th inning, a throwing error by LSU catcher Maci Bergeron following a Skylar Wallace strikeout allowed Baylee Goddard to score from 2nd base, giving the Gators the walk-off win.

The Gators continue to be the SEC’s best-hitting team with a .357 collective average, 365 hits, and 322 runs batted in. They travel to Missouri this weekend to face the Tigers, who dropped a weekend series at Arkansas.

Tennessee continues to roll in SEC play. Last weekend, No. 4 Tennessee took two of three games from No. 7 Georgia at home. In Sunday’s series-clinching win, Sophia Nugent crushed a three-run home run in the 6th inning to give the Lady Vols the 3-1 victory.

Let the Razorback Fans Apology Tour Begin

Arkansas social media wanted Yurachek fired until suddenly they didn't

  • Author: Kent Smith

In this story:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A little over a year and a half ago, a story went out at allHogs calling for the Eric Musselman apology tour to begin after he made the program look bad by trying to start a fight with San Diego State fans and holding an "L" up to his forehead while cursing them following a tournament win over the Aztecs.

It was a bad look for Arkansas basketball and ultimately, San Diego State got its revenge by reaching he national championship game. Now, in much the same vein, it's time for a different apology tour to start up at Arkansas.

However, this one has nothing to do with coaches. It's all the Hogs fans who couldn't let the process play out before freaking out and ripping into their athletics director because they thought he was going to come to a press conference after a few weeks of failure with something slightly above a dead carcass.

There were even people sarcastically claiming, at least that's how it was taken in the allHogs offices, that the coach of Fayetteville High School was going to be named the next coach. It looked like half the fan base intended to march on the Razorbacks athletics complex and remove Yurachek with pitchforks and bull whips themselves.

While the fans and half the state's media rode the emotional wave of every rumor, no matter how far fetched, Yurachek calmly handled business behind the scenes. That video he had his communications team put out of Musselman reads much different now.

The former Arkansas coach admitted during his introductory press conference at USC that he was sitting back in Fayetteville dealing with a ton of anxiety because of how long Trojans athletics director Jennifer Cohen was taking making her decision. That sounds like a man who had a lot of pressure on him behind the scenes to get wherever he's going to go soon because Yurachek was ready to get cracking on landing a big fish.

"You're still here?" he said in the video.

Yurachek is warranted to put out a video today of him sitting in Bud Walton watching the No. 10 national seed gymnastics team move on to the national finals, at Bogle Park while the softball team follows up a series win over No. 3 Georgia with a series win over No. 11 Missouri, at Baum-Walker as the No. 1 baseball team sweeps Ole Miss, then high fives Bobby Petrino before stepping onto a plane where John Calipari adjusts a red tie before Yuracheck sits down, buckles up and stares into the camera at Razorbacks fans. "Oh, you're still here?"

Former Arkansas linebacker Hayden Henry summed up how silly Arkansas fans made themselves look by jumping the gun and overreacting to things they didn't know for sure was true in response to a meme depicting how Yurachek seemingly flipped the script on them.

"But we're still firing him, right?" Henry asked. "I thought everyone was in agreement 24 hours ago."

But we’re still firing him, right? I thought everyone was in agreement 24hrs ago? — Hayden Henry (@haydenthenry) April 8, 2024

Of course, the section of Arkansas fans that constantly barks on the internet can be so delusional at times they will believe they are why Calipari is coming. Had a bunch of keyboard warriors not thrown a hissy fit and said horrible things about Yurachek, it never would have occurred to him to raid Kentucky.

Yurachek clearly was flipping through the mid-majors section of his Roladex looking for someone who can put up a .500 record against Samford when he checked his phone, saw the hate, and then decided it was time to talk to boosters and begin aiming at high level targets. There are tweets out there that indicate that's almost exactly how a lot of fans think it happened.

Arkansas athletics is in as good of shape as it has ever been. Last summer, no one had Bobby Petrino and John Calipari on campus less than a year later while the spring sports were absolutely dominating the college ranks.

That's because no one else thinks like Yurachek when it comes to the future of this athletics program. He continues to believe things can be done Arkansas the fan can't envision. He isn't hampered by the negative self image Razorbacks fans can't seem to shake.

So, at least for now, Yurachek is owed an apology by much of the fan base. They grumbled and threatened because they couldn't see, and he delivered despite the fact the ones he was doing it for wouldn't believe.

Let the Arkansas fans apology tour begin immediately.

The WNBA drafted a superstar class to compete for the 144 total roster spots. Thirty of the 36 picks over three rounds came from NCAA Division I schools. Iowa's Caitlin Clark was selected first overall to the Indiana Fever. It was the second consecutive year Indiana held the top overall selection. Clark will join last year's top overall draft pick, Aliyah Boston, on the Fever following a legendary college career. The guard from Iowa made history, taking the Hawkeyes to consecutive NCAA championship games and setting the all-time Division I scoring record for both men and women.

DRAFT HISTORY:  Every WNBA draft No. 1 overall pick

Alongside Clark, Iowa teammate Kate Martin was drafted in the second round to the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces. The Big Ten and Pac-12 provided the most of any conference with seven draft picks each. The SEC followed with six.

Here's a full breakdown of the conferences:
