Pakistan’s new premier looks to Turkey for political, economic boost
Marking his first official visit to Turkey since he took office, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif landed in Ankara Tuesday for a three-day trip accompanied by a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and Minister for Commerce and Investment Naveed Qamar. The premier’s arrival coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
After defeating his predecessor Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote, Sharif needs international economic and political support to consolidate his coalition government’s standing and stabilize it enough to last through the term ending in August 2023.

Turkey insults Pakistan, refuses to host PM Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif announced his visit to Ankara to show solidarity with Turkey. He did not think that the country which is currently facing a natural disaster, resources should not be spent on VIP visits. In such a situation, Turkey itself refused to host Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif
Islamabad: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has been slapped with an international-level insult by earthquake hit Turkey.
There has been devastation due to the earthquake in Turkey. Countries around the world are sending relief materials and rescue teams to Turkey.
But, Pakistan tried to capitalize on this disaster as an opportunity, which backfired. In fact, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif announced his visit to Ankara to show solidarity with Turkey. He did not think that the country which is currently facing a natural disaster, resources should not be spent on VIP visits. In such a situation, Turkey itself refused to host Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave for Ankara tomorrow morning, he will express his condolences and condolences to President Erdoğan for the destruction of the earthquake, the loss of life, and the people of Turkey. Due to Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, the APC convened on Thursday February 9 is being postponed, a new date will be announced in consultation with the allies,” Pakistan’s Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said in a statement on Twitter.
However, hours after her tweet, Azam Jamil, former special assistant to the prime minister of Turkey, took to social media to announce his country’s reluctance to host Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif.
“The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only,” he tweeted.

What was Pakistan’s excuse for canceling Shehbaz Sharif’s Turkey trip?
Pakistan’s Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Turkey has been postponed. She said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz’s visit has been postponed in view of the ongoing relief work after the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria on Monday morning.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to establish the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to support the earthquake victims of our brother country Turkey in their difficult times. The cabinet has announced to donate 1 month salary to the relief fund. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appealed for the generous help of our brother country Turkey,” Maryam Aurangzeb tweeted.
Shehbaz Sharif was scheduled to leave for Turkey today. He sent a 51-member rescue team and also set up a relief fund. But, Pakistan itself is poor, in such a situation how much financial help it will be able to provide to Turkey is under question.
More than 8000 killed in Turkey and Syria
The earthquake in Turkey and Syria has killed more than 8300 people so far, while millions of people have been injured and were trapped in the debris.
The epicenter of this devastating earthquake was in Kahramanmaras, central Turkey. The tremors were felt as far away as Greenland. Aftershocks and extremely cold weather of this earthquake have further worsened the situation. It is also raining in many areas, which has made relief and rescue operations more difficult.
Pakistan also sent relief material to Turkey
Pakistan has sent over 21 tonnes of relief material to earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria. A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesperson said two PIA flights on behalf of NDMA left Islamabad for Istanbul and Damascus on Wednesday morning.
He said PIA flights PK-705 and PK-9135 carrying 7.4 tonnes and 14 tonnes of cargo (earthquake-relief aid) left Islamabad for Istanbul and Damascus at 8:45 am and 10:30 am respectively. The spokesman elaborated that the 14 tonnes of aid, which was sent to Damascus, also included winter tents and blankets
Close relations between Pakistan and Turkey
The relations between Pakistan and Turkey are very strong. The two countries are also working closely in the defence and trade sectors.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blindly supports Pakistan in the name of Islam. This is the reason why Turkey has supported Pakistan on the Kashmir issue at the United Nations (UN).
Erdogan himself and the foreign minister there have raised the Kashmir issue several times in the United Nations. This is the same Turkey, which has excellent relations with Israel, while having an old enmity with Palestine.

Pm shehbaz to leave for two-day official tour of turkiye on friday.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accepted Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s invitation for a two-day official visit starting Friday (Nov 25 ), the Foreign Office (FO) announced on Thursday.
According to the FO’s press release , the premier will “jointly inaugurate the third of the four Milgem Corvette ships for the Pakistan Navy, PNS Khaibar, at the Istanbul Shipyard”.
PM Shehbaz will “interact with leaders of the Turkish business community” and also meet the President of the ECO Trade and Development Bank during his stay in the country’s urban centre, Istanbul.
Shehbaz and Erdogan will hold wide-ranging discussions on “bilateral relations, the regional situation and other issues of common interest”, the FO said.
The FO added that the two countries “enjoy fraternal ties deeply embedded in commonalities of faith, culture, and history and underpinned by exceptional cordiality and mutual trust”.
The Milgem project — based on a joint collaboration between Turkiye and Pakistan — was signed with ASFAT inc, a Turkish state-owned Defence contractor firm in 2018, according to which the Pakistan navy would acquire four Milgem-class ships from Turkey.
Milgem vessels are 99 metres long, have a displacement capacity of 2,400 tons and have a speed of 29 nautical miles.
These anti-submarine combat frigates, which can be hidden from the radar, would further enhance the defence capability of the Pakistan Navy.
The launching ceremony for the first Corvette for the Pakistan Navy, PNS Babur, was performed in Istanbul in August 2021 while the groundbreaking for the second ship, PNS Badr, was held in Karachi in May 2022, the FO said.
It added that the project “represents a significant milestone in the Pakistan-Turkiye strategic partnership that continues to progress on an upward trajectory”.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier visited Turkiye in May-June 2022, the press release said.
The FO termed the frequent leadership-level exchanges to be a “defining feature of the eternal bonds of Pakistan-Turkiye friendship.”

'No need to come.. busy in quake relief works': Embarrassment for Pak PM as Turkey asks to cancel his visit
According to pakistani media reports, pm sharif and foreign minister bilawal bhutto were scheduled to visit ankara on february 8 in solidarity with the victims killed in the earthquake..
Notably, Turkey, which is the worst-earthquake-affected country, was hit by a massive quake on Monday, resulting in the killing of more than 9,500 people. According to the Turkish authorities, the toll is expected to only rise in the coming days as scores of people are still trapped under the debris of skyscraper buildings.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan’s information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb informed that the debt-ridden Prime Minister would leave for Ankara on Wednesday morning. “He will express his condolences and condolences to President Erdogan for the destruction of the earthquake, the loss of life, and the people of Turkey. Due to Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, the APC convened on Thursday is being postponed, a new date will be announced in consultation with the allies," she said.
Pakistan says permission denied due to 'bad weather'
Hours after her tweet, Azam Jamil, former special assistant to Prime Minister, took to social media and wrote, "The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only." Citing sources in Pakistan's foreign ministry, Express News reported that Sharif's visit has been postponed due to bad weather and the Turkish leadership's engagements related to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts. It added that Pakistan's premiere would not be able to visit the affected areas as the helicopter could not fly during bad weather. Also, it noted that president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his vice president are also engaged in relief activities.
Criticism in Pakistan
It is worth mentioning Pakistan has been facing the worst-ever economic crisis and terrorism, with inflation reaching a record high and the country witnessing major blasts in the past six months. As per Pakistani media reports, PM Sharif had scheduled to address an All-Party Conference (APC) in order to discuss the ongoing situation. However, he has postponed the meeting twice and announced to visit the devastated nation. It sent air contingents on February 6 night to carry out relief operations in Turkey. This prompted the citizens to criticise his step as the country is already facing a series of pressing issues in its own country.

'Turkey, Pakistan determined to boost cooperation at all levels'
By daily sabah with aa.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey and Pakistan are determined to enhance cooperation on a bilateral level and on international platforms after meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Ankara on Wednesday.
"We have comprehensively discussed our bilateral relations, and regional and global issues," Erdoğan said while addressing a joint news conference with Sharif, following the one-on-one and delegation-level talks in Ankara.
Sharif said Pakistan and Turkey have stood by each other in times of need and on issues of core interest.
Pakistan stands with Turkey in its fight against terrorism, said the Pakistani prime minister, adding: "Enemies of Turkey are enemies of Pakistan."
The Pakistani premier said the two sides will further the bilateral ties with focus on trade, defense, energy, tourism and education, and that he looks forward to welcome Erdoğan in Islamabad in September.
Terming Pakistan and Turkey as "natural partners," Sharif said a "strong" business delegation from Turkey will visit Pakistan for "solid and productive results."
Lauding Turkey's progress in e-commerce, tourism, education and infrastructure, Sharif said Pakistan would be "very happy" to get Turkey's support in sectors such as hydropower generation and renewable energy.
"We would be very happy in terms of investments by our Turkish friends who will make profits and we will get cheap energy, which will be a win-win situation," he said.
The Pakistani prime minister said he expects further cooperation in defense sector including in sale of Turkish-made ATAK helicopters.
Thanking Turkey for its "steadfast support" on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, Sharif said: "Turkey's unflinching support provides great strength to valiant Kashmiri people who have been subjected to the worst kinds of human rights violations for over seven decades."
"We are convinced that durable peace in South Asia can only be achieved if the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with U.N. resolutions, and in accordance with wishes of Kashmiri people," he added.
Sharif also expressed support for Turkish Cypriots, saying that "we will continue to support their legitimate rights and aspirations."
The Pakistani prime minister also met Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu earlier in the day, and addressed Turkey-Pakistan Business Council on Tuesday. His delegation includes Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, among others.
Sharif landed in Ankara on Tuesday on a three-day trip , which marks his first visit to Turkey since he assumed office in mid-April after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote following political turmoil. Sharif's visit coincides with the anniversary of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Islamabad and Ankara.
During his visit, Sharif highlighted the favorable relations between his country and Turkey, as he vowed to transform Pakistan into a self-reliant, politically stable country.
This year, Pakistan and Turkey are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, underpinned by structured institutional mechanisms. The High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) is the primary platform at the leadership level, which has been instrumental in further cementing bilateral relations. Six sessions of the HLSCC have taken place so far, with the seventh slated to take place this year.
