Magic in its purest form. I love Floating Points, I love Pharoah Sanders, I love The London Symphony Orchestra. It's a match made in heaven, and the result is absolutely gorgeous. I have loved this record since its release, and realized I don't own it for some reason. So its time to change that. 9.5/10 honestly could become a 10/10 on an indepth vinyl relisten. angrypizza98

Editorial Reviews

Terrestrial Funk's sixth release explores over a decade of Armenian disco, funk, and soul. Compiled by Darone Sassounian who spent three years tracking down the records and artists; fulfilling a calling to lift his people's voice, a people that have always faced the threat of erasure. The music was made a generation after the Armenian Genocide, a testament to perseverance. The seven tracks featured are incredibly inventive and unique in their interpretations of Western seventies sounds. This compilation comes at an urgent time as 2020 set the stage for Azerbaijan and Turkey to perpetuate genocidal rhetoric as they invaded Armenian borders and bombed civilian cities eventually resulting in the loss of lives and land stewarded for millennia. All while the western world paid little notice. It is with great gratitude and purpose that Terrestrial Funk rebirths this music and uplifts the voice of the Armenian Diaspora

Silk road journey of the armenian diaspora (1971-1982), terrestrial funk • 2021.

The Terrestrial Funk label has been around since 2018, has released six records and is shifting east with »Silk Road: Journey Of The Armenian Diaspora (1971-1982)« now. So far, from Florida, they’ve moved the Afrobeat league around Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor, dug up lonely breakbeat banging from the nineties with Airpeople and shuffled across the tarmac with a new record by DMX Krew. For this release, DJ Darone Sassounian was allowed to trace his ancestor and curate seven tracks between boogie, soul and psych-funk-slag from Armenia. The result is a summer record, no question, but also an attempt to portray a generation of musicians who carry the collective trauma of the genocide against their parents within them. Listening to the seven pieces between Marten Yorgantz and Eddy Jeghelian, you don’t get lost in pathos. Rather, you travel back to the Yerevan of the 1970s, to get into a taxi in Armenia’s capital and take a spin – folk music sounds from the windows, there is a smell of departure and a bit of the West. At least in the music. At least on this record.

silk road journey of the armenian diaspora

Silk Road: Journey of the Armenian Diaspora 1971-1982 [Terrestrial Funk]

silk road music from armenian diaspora

Terrestrial Funk is a label from the US who I first picked up through a comment on a dodgy youtube rip of Lang Cook’s Liberty City Jam , a rare-as-hen’s-teeth funk fusion record that I had been praying to see reissued. Hope came in the form of Terrestrial Funk, who said they’d be dropping a press the following year. Delivering the goods right from the beginning.

Just announced this morning is their latest unearthing, a decade of Armenian disco, funk, and soul from the post-genocide generation Armenian diaspora of the 1970s. These are surprisingly big sounds, with intelligent beats, dancefloor soul and electric production that sounds funky fresh in 2020. Chief digger Darone Sassounian spent three years on a track-and-trace mission to find the original artists, ‘fulfilling a calling to lift his people’s voice, a people that have always faced the threat of erasure’.

You have to love the sound of moody Caucausus keys segueing blissfully into starry-eyed disco frills, best of all without sounding gimmicky, derivative or awkward. This is inspired music taking hip Western sounds and bringing them into an Armenian sphere.

Some tracks take cues from Anatolian Psych Rock stylings of the mid-60s, (Harout Pamboukjian’s ‘Taparoum Enk (We’re Wandering’), laying fast percussion over Pink Floyd wah and folk-rock chords, others from low-slung AOR and Italian beach music (Avo Haroutounian’s ‘Tears On My Eyes’).

eddy jeghelian

It’s not even that buying this comp will save you a lot of money – these records aren’t really about otherwise to spend your dosh on. Terrestrial Funk delivering the goods.

At a time when Armenia sees themselves in an existential struggle against their neighbours in the Caucausus, the culmination of Darone Sassounian’s three years of work is prescient.

The Great Silk Road

The term “silk road” was first used by German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877. The term marked the trade path that linked the ancient Rome with China. Nowadays the term “silk road” is used to mark all the roads that were used for trade between East and Europe.

In addition to silk, a wide range of other goods was traded along the Silk Road, and the network was also important for migrants and travelers, and for the spread of religion , philosophy, science, technology and artistic ideals. The Silk Road had a significant impact on the lands through which the routes passed, and the trade played a significant role in the development of towns and cities along the Silk Road routes.

The Silk Road started to be used just after the invasions of Alexander the Great, when the East and West collided in Middle East and India. At first it was used to export silk from China, and this is why it was called “The Great Silk Road”.

Armenia on the Silk Road

Needless to say, Armenia played a huge role for East and West at that time. From the East the Silk Road passed through Armenia, or rather, through the Artashat city and from there stretched to the harbors of the Black Sea. In the 5th century Dvin came to replace Artashat as the capital of Armenia. The trade road that linked China, Central Asia and Iran with the capital of Byzantine Empire Constantinople passed through Dvin.

The Silk Road  from Armenia through the ‘Stans’ to China, was a little known trading route until it was discovered by Marco Polo in the 13th century. A journey down the Silk Road today shows how wrong my childhood learning was. Marco Polo not only did not “discover” the Silk Road, he came upon not at its beginning, but closer to its end nearly 1300 years after Emperor Augustus first noted its existence in 1 BC.

In the 9-10th centuries Armenian towns Artsn, Ani and Kars played an essential role in world trade. Later many samples of Persian pottery, silk and china were found during the excavations in Ani.

Till now in Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia the ancient Orbelians’ caravanserai was preserved, which once served as an inn for traders who passed through Armenia along the Silk Toad.

The Great Silk Road played a great role between the East and the West. It wasn’t just a trade road but it was a cultural, religious, linguistic and technological bridge for exchanges and enriched the culture of all participant countries.

What kept the Armenian culture and traditions alive and thriving was the ethereal Armenian innovative spirit, shaped and perfected on the crossroads of civilizations and hugely contributing to the development of humankind. This is probably the biggest benefit Armenia had received from its role as one of the oldest nations on the Great Silk Road.

Armenian grooves, but done with plenty of familiar funk elements as well -- including lots of sweet keyboards and some hard-driving rhythms that makes more than a few of these tracks perfect for the clubs! There's not much in the way of notes with the package, and the set is hardly comprehensive -- but it does a great job of bringing together tunes we never would have heard otherwise -- tracks ...
