The port of Reykjavik consists of three cruise ship terminals: Skarfabakki, Miðbakki, and Kornagarður terminals.

• Skarfabakki cruise terminal (aka Skarfabakki Harbour; berth length 650 m) is the main, modernly equipped cruise terminal, located around 4 km/2.5 miles from downtown Reykjavik. This terminal lies within the Sundahöfn area and can accommodate up to two large cruise ships simultaneously. Free shuttle buses are usually provided to transfer passengers downtown, while other transportation options include public buses and taxis. The ride to Reykjavik downtown takes about 10 minutes each way. Several sightseeing tour agencies and car rentals are available outside the terminal.
• Kornagarður terminal is adjacent to Skarfabakki terminal (the distance is less than 1 km/0.6 miles) and consists of one berth that can accommodate smaller cruise vessels (berth length 184 m).
• Miðbakki cruise terminal is conveniently located in the historic Old Harbour, within easy walking distance from Reykjavik’s main city attractions, such as Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavik City Hall, and the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral. The berth length is 205 meters.

Getting Around Reykjavik Port

The capital and the metropolitan area have several ports. Skarfabakki, Miðbakki and Sundabakki are the three main ports of call. The old harbor Miðbakki is the most central of the three ports. It is located right in the city center, near the Harpa Concert Hall. Only smaller ships can dock in the harbor. The larger ships dock in Skarfabakki and Sundabakki. Both ports are located east of the city center. The cruise ships leave mainly in the newer port Skarfabakki. This is about four kilometers outside the city center. Ships up to a maximum length of 335 meters can moor at the pier. The port has no terminal, so you can get directly on the pier on the pier. Tourist information, toilets, currency exchange and Internet access are available.

Cruise ships stop in Reykjavik between May and October. In winter, the night lastst 20 hours, which doesn’t stop residents from defying the coldness in the pubs and thanks to their distinct humour.

Iceland’s landscape of volcanic soils is described as lunar. The painted houses brightened the landscape. Geothermal energy draws on the heat produced by volcanoes to produce energy. This region is known for its fishing gastronomy, for its handicrafts and for making unique woolly sweaters.

Keflavik International Airport is located 50km from Reykjavíkport. Taxis are availabe 24 hours a day at the airport.

A bus transfer service is available and the journey to Reykjavík will take 45 minutes. Wi-Fi is free on the bus. Buy your tickets online before you leave.

The public transport will take you more than 1 hour and 15 minutes.

A shuttle bus is usually available to get to the centre of the city. Tickets are on sale at the port shop (10 euro or 14 euro for a round trip in 2014) Otherwise, a paved path (Shore walk) along the sea also goes to the center of the city, mall it takes at least 45 minutes to walk. Points of interest in the centre of the city are within walking distance of each other.

A transit service is also in operation.

This museum has two exhibitions. The Arbaer Museum, an open-air museum of 30 buildings that show how the people of Reykjavik lived. The exhibition Reykjavik 871± 2 is based on the discovery of a house dating back 871 (± two years). You can also see Viking artifacts found nearby.

This museum is composed of three buildings scattered throughout the city. The building housing contemporary art, located near the Old Port, is the easiest to access. The other two buildings have paintings and sculptures and are accessible by taxi.

Blue Lagoon

These artificial geothermal-heated pools are part of a health centre. They were created during the construction of the geothermal power plant when the water ceased to be absorbed by the ground. The minerals that have been deposited at the bottom give it this color. The property is 40 minutes from the city centre. Tour companies offer express buses from the BSI bus terminal. Open 9 hours a day in summer and 10 hours rest of the season. Entrance 30 euros includes locker (rental of extra towels).

How to Visit Blue Lagoon in Iceland on a Cruise

What is the blue lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is a series of geothermal pools that were created in the 1970’s. While the lava landscape itself is natural, the water actually comes from the runoff of a nearby power plant. The creation of the pools occurs as part of the process of creating electricity and renews itself every 48 hours. Don’t worry, it is perfectly safe to soak in this geothermal spa. The water contains no added chemicals, just naturally occurring materials that can do wonders for your skin. The milky coloration of the water is a combination of algae, silica, and minerals that are thought to have medicinal powers.

How Hot is the Water in the Blue Lagoon?

The water is heated by natural geothermal processes occurring underground. While temperatures underground can reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the average temperature in the pools is approximately 102 degrees Fahrenheit. For most people, the warm water will feel soothing and relaxing. As a reference point, most whirlpool hot tubs are kept at a temperature between 100 to 104 degrees.

Who Can Visit the Blue Lagoon?

Families with children two years or older are welcome at the Blue Lagoon. Children under the age of 13 are allowed in free of charge along with an accompanying adult admission. Each member of a party over the age of 13 will be required to have a ticket to gain admission to the spa. Even those who can’t swim are welcomed at the Blue Lagoon. The deepest portion of the water is about 4.5 feet and there are lifeguards on duty at all times.

How Much is the Admission to the Spa?

There are two different packages from which you can choose when visiting the Blue Lagoon. Most tours and cruise line excursions come with the Comfort Package (between $62-$89 USD) which includes a locker, a towel, mud mask, one drink, and entrance to the facilities. You can upgrade to the Premium Package ($89-$116 USD) which includes a bathrobe and slippers, an algae mask, and some perks at the onsite restaurant in addition to the offerings of the Comfort Package. In-water massages are also available for an additional cost.

If you want to splurge, you can purchase one of the limited Retreat Spa packages. This exclusive package gives you private access to a reserved area of the Blue Lagoon. This also comes with access to the Retreat Spa, additional skin care products, a private changing room, and other benefits. This upgraded package is not cheap, costing between $500 to $650 a person.

How Do I Get Tickets to the Blue Lagoon?

You will need to reserve tickets for Blue Lagoon in advance. If you purchase a cruise excursion, the ticket will most likely be included in your package. If you plan to go there on your own, you will want to buy tickets online. Ticket prices fluctuate depending on the day of the week and the time you plan to visit, with peak times and weekends having the highest prices.

When booking your ticket, you are requested to select an arrival time. The Blue Lagoon website clearly states “ If you don’t arrive at the pre-booked date and time, Blue Lagoon cannot guarantee availability .”

How Do I Get to the Blue Lagoon?

The ride from the cruise terminal ( Skarfabakki Harbour) is about 51 Kilometers away which has a travel time of about 45 minutes.  Most cruise lines offer an excursion to this popular attraction which includes round-trip transportation and a ticket for the Comfort Package.

The Blue Lagoon website also offers transportation from several locations in the city, including the cruise terminal, for $50 a person. When working out the total costs, there is not much savings based on which mode of transportation you choose. The one benefit of booking directly with Blue Lagoon is the ability to pick a preferred departure time from the cruise port, whereas cruise excursions will usually leave at only one set time.

One word of caution is don’t miss the bus. While there are taxis in the area, they will cost you. The trip back to the cruise port will probably run you between $125-$150+ USD.

What Else Do I Need to Know Before Visiting Blue Lagoon?

When visiting the Blue Lagoon, you will be given a wrist band that will serve as your “wallet” while in the spa. This wrist band will also be used to access a locker in the changing facilities. Yes, you do need to shower before entering the water; however, even though Icelanders are accustomed to changing and showering in public, you will have access to private showers and changing stalls if desired.

You should also remember to remove jewelry as the minerals could discolor the metals. Women will also want to tie their hair up or apply plenty of conditioner before entering the lagoon. Cameras and phones are permitted, but a waterproof option is definitely recommended. We used our iPhone with a Lifeproof case to ensure no water damage.

Should I Visit the Blue Lagoon in Iceland on Cruise?

Yes, the trip to the Blue Lagoon was a fun and memorable excursion that we both enjoyed. Given our time in port, we were able to see some of the Downtown area during the day prior to visiting the Blue Lagoon and visited the Golden Circle on our second day in the city. Having a relaxing evening with a drink in hand (yes, there is even a swim up bar) in a thermal hot spring is something you don’t get to do every day!

Our four hour tour was just enough time as it gave us about 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon. This equated to about 90 minutes in the water. If you’d prefer to spend more time in the geothermal spa or exploring the grounds, you should plan the trip accordingly.

Reykjavík hop on/off double decker busses collects passengers from next to the cruise terminal building.  Allegedly it runs every half hour, and a timetable is displayed by the cruise terminal bus stop, however at times it runs closer to an hour than to the published 30 minutes. Pre-booked tickets are somewhat cheaper than paying in local currency as you board the bus.

The Icelandic monetary unit is the "króna." Coins are in denominations of 100 kr., 50 kr., 10kr., 5 kr. and 1 kr. Bank notes are in denominations of 5000 kr., 2000 kr.,1000 kr., and 500 kr. All Icelandic banks provide foreign exchange and are generally open on weekdays from 09:15 to 16:00. Euros are widely accepted.

2-floor/5000m2 cruise terminal is due to open at Port Reykjavik (Iceland) in 2025

A new 5000 m2 (53820 ft2) terminal spanning 2 floors is set to open at 312 Skarfabakki in Port Reykjavik (Iceland) in 2025, with full functionality expected in 2026.

Construction of the BREEM-certified building is scheduled to start in 2023-Q3.

The primary objective of this project was to design a building that could accommodate various passenger flow and luggage handling requirements in a highly flexible manner. Additionally, the building was envisioned as a visual landmark, offering guests scenic views of Faxa Bay both from inside and outside the terminal, as explained by Sigurdur Jokull Olafsson, the marketing manager of Faxaports.

The terminal's core design incorporates a black box concept, providing a multifunctional open space suitable for turnaround operations. Surrounding this central space, a glass structure will be erected to introduce natural light and ambiance into the building. This versatile terminal will also serve as a venue for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events during periods when cruise activity is low.

Olafsson emphasized the importance of a welcoming terminal, as it often serves as the first point of entry for travelers to any destination. Faxaports is investing IKr2.8 billion (EUR 24.3 million) in this project due to Reykjavik's growing significance as a key turnaround port in the North Atlantic.

In the current year, 265 cruise calls with 285,000 passengers are scheduled, with approximately 90,000 of them being part of turnaround operations. This represents a significant increase from 2022, which saw 184 calls and 170,770 passengers. Olafsson noted that the future growth in passenger numbers will predominantly come from turnaround operations, as the port has reached its pier capacity.

The terminal will be situated in Sundahofn, about a 3km shuttle bus ride from downtown. Presently, turnaround operations are managed from a small building and tents at a 619-meter-long quay.

In terms of onshore power infrastructure, the port is implementing a three-year plan involving a EUR 20.7 million investment for two high-voltage connections near the new terminal. On September 19th, the Minister of Infrastructure officially inaugurated a low-voltage 1.5 MVA OPS (Onshore Power Supply) for smaller ships at the Old Harbour, with Hurtigruten's Maud being the first vessel to utilize this facility.

Is there parking at or near Skarfabakki Cruise port? How about overnight? How much would it cost? What website should I check. I went to this website https://www.faxafloahafnir.is/en/ but can't find any information about parking at the port.

Note that some rental companies offer a pick up and drop off at Skarfabakki. With that you don't need to get shuttles or a taxi to an office.

It is about 4 kilometers. Not going to cost *that* much

Alternative could be to take Straeto bus 16 which leaves from Hlemmur bus station, 100m from the hotel.

All additional drivers must meet all rental requirements. Additional drivers can be added at any rental location and at any time during the rental. An additional driver fee of 990 ISK (incl. VAT) per day applies up to a maximum charge of 6,930 ISK (incl. VAT).

After Hours Service

AFTER HOURS RENTAL - THE CUSTOMER MAY BOOK A RENTAL AFTER HOURS WITH 12 HOURS ADVANCE NOTICE FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE OF 10,000 ISK.  AFTER HOURS RETURN - THE CUSTOMER CAN LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE REYKJAVIK EXCURSIONS SERVICE DESK LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE ENTERPRISE SERVICE DESK.  THE CAR MUST BE PARKED RIGHT OUTSIDE THE BUS TERMINAL IN A SPECIFICALLY MARKED DROP OFF AREA.  THE CUSTOMER MUST LEAVE A NOTE WITH CONTACT INFORMATION. 

Age Requirements

The minimum age requirement for all vehicles is 25. Renters between the age of 20 and 24 may rent the categories Mini, Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard and Intermediate Wagon only. A young driver fee of 2000 ISK per day (incl. VAT) applies for all renters between the age of 20 and 24.

Cross Border Policy

CROSS BORDER TRAVEL IS NOT PERMITTED.

Damage Waiver

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces the liability of the renter in the event of damage to the bodywork of the vehicle. If CDW is not included in the reservation, the renter has liability up to the full market value of the vehicle. If not included in the booking, CDW is an optional coverage available for purchase. If included in the reservation or purchased, the maximum excess chargeable per incident is 500,000 ISK for all car classes, provided all rental terms and conditions are adhered to. Before purchasing CDW it is advised to determine, if personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If CDW is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges and seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. CDW is not insurance.

One Way Drop Policy

All rentals where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it was collected from will be subject to a one-way fee. The one-way fee varies based on car category, location, and pick-up date. The exact amount of the one-way fee will be displayed during the reservation process when entering the dates, desired route, and car category.

Refueling Service

Refueling Service All vehicles are provided with a full tank of fuel. Customers can choose from the following options on how to pay for fuel: Option 1 – Prepay Fuel This option allows the renter to pay for the tank of fuel at the time of rental and return the tank empty. No refunds will be issued for unused fuel. Option 2 – We Refill This option allows the renter to pay at the end of the rental for fuel used but not replaced. The fuel price charged by the branch will be in line with local fuel prices. A refueling fee will be charged on top of the fuel. Option 3 – You Refill This option allows the renter to return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel as received to avoid extra fuel charges.

Personal Accident Insurance

Personal Accident Insurance - PAI is mandatory in Iceland and is included in the rate. PAI compensates the rental driver in cases of bodily injury resulting from a traffic accident when operating the rental vehicle.

Forms of Payment

All major credit cards, issued by either Mastercard, VISA or American Express are accepted. All cards presented must be in the renter's name. Diners Club, Debit cards, prepaid cards, cash and checks are not accepted.

Roadside Protection

Roadside Assistance Protection (RAP) is an optional coverage available for selection by the renter. RAP allows the customer to waive financial responsibility for call out/recovery fees associated with roadside incidents such as a flat battery (for non-electric vehicles), tire punctures or lock outs. Roadside Protection does not cover misfuelling, replacement vehicle keys, replacement tire costs, running out of fuel, running out of charge (for electric vehicles) or self inflicted incidents. You must adhere to all rental terms and conditions to receive the benefit of Roadside Assistance Protection. In cases of rental vehicle mechanical failure through no fault of the renter, roadside assistance will be provided at no cost to all renters. This service will include a tow and a replacement vehicle.

Renter Requirements

All drivers must present a fully valid and unexpired driving license. All drivers must have held their license for at least one year at the time of rental. Lead drivers must also present an additional form of photo ID (e.g. passport) along with a valid credit card in their name upon collection of the vehicle. If the driving license is non-European an International Driving Permit is also required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Please note that we reserve the right to request additional ID or conduct further identification checks if needed. This may include an identity check with external partners who may check details supplied against databases to which they have access.

Supplemental Liability Protection

General Third Party Liability insurance is mandatory and included with all rental rates. Liability insurance covers third party property damage and bodily injury caused by the insured. Sum insured in each and every loss is 500,000,000.00 ISK.
