Yellowstone Geysers Tour

Destination

Enjoy a catered experience of Yellowstone National Park’s interior, where incredible volcanic features such as geysers and hot springs create a mystical world amidst the backdrop of winter’s beauty.

  • Old Faithful
  • Snowcoach Excursion to Yellowstone’s Interior
  • Winter Landscapes & Geothermal Wonders

Yellowstone is unique year-round, but perhaps most notably in the wintertime. This high-elevation volcanic plateau experiences deep cold and heavy snowfall, but simultaneously exhibits some of the most visible volcanic features on the planet. Hot water rises from geysers, springs, vents and gurgling pots creating tornadoes of steam and a sense of surrealism. Eighty percent of Yellowstone is closed to the public in winter, and this tour allows us to visit these remote regions on specialized vehicles that roll over the snow.

*Tour availability is based on snowcoach availability with our partner. We will verify availability before confirming the tour.

Our full-day tour (accessing the interior of Yellowstone National Park from the north entrance or the west entrance) is led by our naturalist guides according to guest abilities and interests. Our guide will escort you in a Yellowstone Safari Co vehicle from your lodging to either Gardiner or West Yellowstone where we will join our group headed towards Old Faithful, by snowcoach. Our guide will provide educated and passionate interpretation of everything you encounter throughout the day including walks around several geyser basins, wildlife sightings, historic buildings and geologic features.  As our guest, you will be provided healthy and hearty snacks, a full picnic lunch, as well as the ultimate decadence of a steaming hot cocoa or coffee when you need it the most. Whether this is your first or tenth time to Yellowstone National Park, visiting in the winter will undoubtedly be an enjoyable and memorable experience.

On your journey to the park entrance and throughout the day, you may see some of North America’s largest mammals exhibiting some fascinating behaviors as they attempt to survive the harsh winter. Herbivores such as bison, elk, deer, moose and sheep, range openly throughout valleys, gorges and cliff-sides. Many raptors such as bald and golden eagles, falcons and hawks perch on trees or circle the skies searching for their next meal. Predators like wolves, coyotes and foxes are especially active in winter when their prey are at their weakest. Our guides will provide binoculars for you to use throughout your day in order to appreciate the beauty of these wild creatures safely from a distance.

What's Included

  • Hotel pickup
  • Professional naturalist guide
  • Private wildlife safari
  • Public snowcoach tour
  • Catered picnic lunch
  • Assorted snack basket
  • Non-alcoholic beverages (hot and cold)
  • Use of UHD binoculars and spotting scopes

Yellowstone Safari Company is incredible. They are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, the ecosystem and everything in-between. I had been to Yellowstone a dozen times with friends and family before going on a safari with them, and their trips are next level. You see things that you've never noticed before and are way more likely to see wildlife since they are in the park everyday and know the animals patterns. I can't recommend them enough!

Will we be in a group with other people?

You’ll have a private tour from your pickup location to the snowcoach departure site at either the north or west entrance.  Then, your group and your Yellowstone Safari Company guide will join others on the snowcoach, which seat groups of up to 20 people. Your guide will offer you a personalized experience with information throughout the day, as well as transport to and from the snowcoach departure site.

How cold will it be in Yellowstone National Park in winter?

Yellowstone in winter can be very cold. We recommend wearing synthetic layers, including a very warm insulating layer and a waterproof/repellent wind layer, as well as warm wool hats and gloves. We will provide hand and foot warmers for you as well as hot drinks and food to keep you warm throughout the day.

Will we see Old Faithful erupt on this tour?

Yes, every trip includes an eruption of Old Faithful, which happens every 90 minutes or so. We will plan lunch around watching it erupt!

Will we see other geysers and hot springs on this tour?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to walk around several geyser basins to see these features up close.  We are able to observe many of these geothermal features in one area, and we will take time to explore and educate as we walk around, but we will not touch or enter any springs – it’s illegal to do so in the park!

One of the most common responses that I hear when I tell my summer-time clients about our winter wildlife safaris is: I didn’t even know that Yellowstone was open in the winter!  Not only is Yellowstone open, but winter is arguably one of the most spectacular times to visit!

Yellowstone in Winter

Feb 27, 2023.

As November approaches, a dramatic transformation occurs- the days shorten, the temperatures drop, the chance of snow escalates, and eventually, over 200 miles of roadway in the park will close to regular vehicle traffic.  Fortunately, this does not mean the entire park is inaccessible.

Take a Snowcoach Through Yellowstone in the Winter

One of the two ways to explore yellowstone in the winter is by snowcoach. this is everything you need to know..

When snow blankets Yellowstone National Park, there’s only two ways to get into the heart of the park: by snowmobile or snowcoach.

In early November each year Yellowstone closes all but one road to normal vehicle traffic. As the snow begins to fly and cover our first national park, a different sort of vehicle gets ready to transport visitors through a winter wonderland. A snowcoach is a shuttle van either on extra large (picture a monster truck) tires or tracks like a snowmobile. These specially designed vehicles are perfect for navigating the park’s unplowed roads and, other than snowmobiles, are the only way to access the interior of the park in the winter. With big picture windows, you’ll be able to see all the sights from the park’s abundant winter wildlife to steaming geysers.

Snowcoaches are a great way to see the park since you’ll stay warm and cozy inside the vehicle, unlike a snowmobile tour where you’ll have to bundle up. Your driver will also be able to share fun facts about the park and easily point out wildlife as you drive. Tours range from half-day scenic drives to full-day excursions to packages where you’ll do both a scenic drive and ski or snowshoe in the park.

A snowcoach is also the only transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge , the park’s only hotel other than Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel , open in the winter (note: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will be closed winter 2022/23). A stay in the heart of the park in winter is magical. From spending the day skiing or snowshoeing past geysers to curling up next to the fire with a book to ice skating under the stars, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Yellowstone Snowcoach Options

West entrance tours.

Located in West Yellowstone, Mont. , the park’s West Entrance is closed to normal vehicles in the winter months, but is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World.” You can take a guided snowmobile tour in the park from West Yellowstone, but you can also depart on a day tour from this town to see the park from the comfort of a snowcoach. These tour operators offer day trips into the park, usually to either Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone :

See Yellowstone – seeyellowstone.com

Backcountry Adventures – backcountry-adventures.com

Yellowstone Vacations – www.yellowstonevacations.com

Yellowstone Expeditions (Ski camping tours) – yellowstoneexpeditions.com

South Entrance Tours

Yellowstone’s South Entrance is located closest to Jackson, Wyo. , a famous winter ski destination thanks to Jackson Hole Resort. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is also home to lots of winter fun including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. From Jackson, you can head north with one of these tour operators to spend the day seeing Yellowstone by snowcoach, or be dropped off at Old Faithful Snow Lodge for a stay:

Scenic Safaris – www.scenic-safaris.com

North Entrance Tours and Transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge

The North Entrance, just outside of Gardiner, Mont. , is where you’ll find the only year-round road open to normal vehicles through the park. In winter, you can drive plowed roads to the Mammoth Hot Springs area and through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance where the tiny Montana towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City await. You can also book a snowcoach day tour into the park, or transportation to the only hotel inside the park besides Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel that offers winter lodging: Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

Yellowstone Vacations (day tours from Mammoth) – www.yellowstonevacations.com

Yellowstone National Park Lodges (day tours from Mammoth and Old Faithful, transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge) – www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/adventures/winter-adventures/

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book a Snowcoach Tour?

If you’re using a snowcoach as transportation to the Snow Lodge, it’s best to book your ride as soon as you book your stay since there is only one company at the North Entrance and one company at the South Entrance that offers transportation.

Day tours are more flexible since there are more operators, but it’s best to book as far in advance as possible in order to ensure you get a seat. Last minute reservations may be available, but don’t count on them.

How Much Are Yellowstone Snowcoach Tours?

Yellowstone snowcoach tours range in price depending on which company and tour you choose. In Winter 2022/23 half-day scenic snowcoach tours could be found for less than $100 for adults and less than $50 for children. Transportation, including two pieces of luggage, between Mammoth and Old Faithful Snow Lodge cost $144 for adults and $72 for children each way for the 2022/23 season. While tipping is not required, it’s expected. Be prepared to tip your driver 15-20% in cash.

Be sure to note whether or not your snowcoach operator includes your park pass in your tour price. If they do not, you’ll need to purchase a pass in advance. On guided tours, a 7-day, annual or lifetime pass is only good for one person, so be sure to have a pass for each individual in your group. These passes cost $20 in 2022/23 for adults 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.

What Do You Wear on a Snowcoach Tour?

While snowcoaches are heated, it’s important to be properly dressed for winter conditions as you’ll be entering and exiting the snowcoach in snowy and cold weather and will likely get out and explore at certain stops along the way.

Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable on the drive but quickly gear up to get out in the cold. A waterproof and insulated jacket, a warm hat, warm gloves and snow boots or other waterproof boots with good tread are recommended. Wool or synthetic fabrics are better than cotton for winter trips as they wick away moisture more quickly.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Snowcoach Tours

A ride through winter's wonderland.

Winter in Yellowstone National Park is altogether surreal. Picture steaming geyser basins and thermal pools juxtaposed with pure white snow. Most of the roads in Yellowstone are closed to vehicular traffic this time of year, which makes it a good time for Nordic skiing , snowshoeing , guided snowmobile tours and snowcoach touring.

Snowcoaches are basically tour buses equipped with oversized tires or tracks ideal for oversnow travel. And with interior upgrades that make them more comfortable than ever before, they're perfect for a wintry—and unforgettable—ride through the park.

Regardless of who you book with, you'll have several amazing winter adventures to choose from. Head to Canyon Village and try Nordic skiing around the rim of the jaw-dropping Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone—featuring a completely frozen 308-foot waterfall. Or, take a tour to Old Faithful Village, where you can explore the diverse thermal features that make up the Upper Geyser Basin before heading back to Mammoth Hot Springs. Make it a long weekend by booking a couple nights at cozy Old Faithful Snow Lodge, which offers two crackling fires for guests to enjoy plus options for additional tours and ski drops that leave directly from the lodge.

As the gateway community with the closest access to Old Faithful Village, West Yellowstone offers the most snowcoach tour booking options. Whether you're headed for Old Faithful or Canyon Village, tours often include lunch and plenty of stops for checking out wildlife—which are often more abundant in the winter months, and certainly easier to spot against the snow! Book a tour at the West Yellowstone office of Yellowstone Vacations, Backcountry

Adventures , See Yellowstone Tours , Yellowstone Alpen Guides or Yellowstone Expeditions .

If you're staying at the park's North Entrance, book a private or group tour with Yellowstone Vacations in Gardiner. Your tour will include lunch and commentary from naturalist guides. Snowcoach tours are also available through Yellowstone National Park Lodges in Mammoth Hot Springs, five miles south of Gardiner inside park boundaries.

“Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone by Snowmobile

Although Yellowstone National Park is known for Old Faithful, there are many beautiful natural sights to see year-round, including “the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.” They become even more memorable when you view them via snowmobile. Never driven a snowmobile?  No problem. We will teach you everything you need to know. During your full-day tour, you’ll see:

  • Norris Geyser Basin , which features Steamboat Geyser. While it doesn’t run “on time” as much as Old Faithful, Steamboat is the tallest geyser anywhere on the globe. It’s spectacular any time of year.
  • The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must-see phenomenon in winter. You’ll be captivated by the snow clinging to the canyon walls and the ice bridge that forms at the bottom. It’s definitely a “bucket list” location.
  • If time allows, Hayden Valley will also be a stop on your route. It is here that you will often find photo-worthy bison herds, elk and other animals.

All of our winter tours include a stop at Madison Junction . You can stretch your legs, take a bathroom break and talk with other Park visitors in a warming hut.

What Guests Are Saying...

“This was our first time to Yellowstone National Park. The description of this package is what drew us into going. Turned out that the description was not adequate. What Sam provided in his explanations and talks along with the scenery cannot be put in words. Magical, Outstanding, Exceptional!! Once in a life time trip that begs to be experienced again.” – Miles, CA

“The expertise provided by the guide and driver was spectacular. The knowledge of these two complimented each other and made the experience great for everyone, whether they were thermal feature lovers or birding aficionados.” – Dale & Charla, OH

“What a wonderful experience for myself, daughter, and grand daughter. The small group and the complete lack of other vacationers was a bonus. It was like having the park all to ourselves.” – Mary, CA

  • Michelle W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Violet, Views & Awesome Trip The gorgeous strong and super fun Violet was an amazing guide and an exceptional snowmobile driver. She kept eyes on us throughout our trip to Old Faithful. We made stops where she gave us history and geography. She also took our photos throughout the tour. Also, prior to pick up was in communication with us and arrived early. We really think we had the best trip and it is all bc of VIOLET! Read more Written April 7, 2024
  • sharlinez 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Yellowstone Snowmobiling Trip Our family enjoyed several scenic views/attractions through Yellowstone. We saw Old Faithful, bison, Lewis Lake and several waterfalls. The winter scenery was breathtaking, and we learned so much about the park from our guide. We were able to stop and take photos. It was incredible! The full winter suits and helmets provided were key to keeping out the cold. These things were all 5 stars for us. As a first-time snowmobile driver, there were times I did not feel comfortable with the pace. I also felt that I would have liked to go slower and be closer to the guide on the way back and in unfavorable weather conditions. Not only was I stressed but I also felt unsafe. Also, as the driver, I could not enjoy the scenery as much as I would have wanted to because my focus was on the road and the conditions. These things were 1 star for us. We will not return to snowmobiling at this pace, but we will hopefully return to Yellowstone in the winter. Read more Written March 17, 2024

He did a phenomenal job allowing us time to view and photograph wild life, walk around the mud pots, and even taking pictures of us. He also was very knowledgable about every aspect of the trip. Loved going through Hayden Valley, around Yellowstone Lake, and seeing the falls. Highly recommend this tour to anyone, but ask for Claude. The only negative of the trip was the snowsuits, they were old and not as warm as the suits we had worn on another snowmobile tour, but everything else was superb!! Read more Written March 11, 2024
  • katherinelF2511EG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Must-Do in Jackson Zach and the Scenic Safaris Team were amazing. We had an incredibly cold/blizzardy day snowmobiling through Yellowstone and it was amazing. A must-do if you are in Jackson during the winter time. They provided us with one-piece snowsuits that were worn overtop of our full ski gear, boots, and helmets. Ski goggles were not required but we were glad to have them. The base station had a convenience store, hot sandwiches, and warm bathrooms. Zach was an amazing guide and made us feel very comfortable - none of us had ever snowmobiled before and the conditions were less than ideal with all the snow. He was incredibly competent, helpful, and dedicated to making sure we had the best time. Read more Written March 11, 2024
  • 63Kathyd 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Epic trip! Eric was our guide and he was very friendly and fun. Most of our group rode tandem and were first time riders. My friend and I rode single and had a blast. Yes, we had to ride faster than I wanted a few times but that was because we started 2 hours later due to snow the day before and the park opening late. We got to old faithful a few minutes before the show and it was phenomenal!! There is a reason to hurry on the way out and take stops along the way coming back. The day turned out gorgeous, even though the snowmobiling was challenging-but that was 100% due to the snow the day before. I would highly recommend having your riding single-some of the couples were very nervous. We didn’t realize how far we were riding either-the description was a little vague. Would we do it again-100% YES!! Read more Written March 10, 2024

Imagine blitzing through Yellowstone's winter wonderland, the snow kicking up behind you like a herd of startled bison. With Bobby leading the charge, every snowdrift becomes a speed bump on the road to adventure. Also, his jokes are hotter than Old Faithful and twice as explosive. With him as a guide you'll forget it's colder than a bison's bottom horn out there! Our guide, Delaney, was so great. She is extremely knowledgeable about the area, is a great sled rider, and a great team leader managing the group. It is impossible to do better than her! Our tour was in the middle of a ski week for us at JH on our off-day and was a highlight of the trip. Seeing Yellowstone in the winter is an incredible experience. On our day, it snowed in the morning and the sun came out in the afternoon, so we had the best of both worlds weather-wise. This will be a memorable experience for the whole family. TESTIMONIALS

There’s nothing on earth like seeing the unique awe inspiring scenery of Yellowstone for the first time. It honestly renders me speechless.

Our Gardiner snowcoaches are vans on oversized low-pressure tires. These tires allow our coaches to drive smoothly over the snow, while keeping you higher off the ground for better viewing.

Disclaimer: Actual tour buses may differ than what is represented in photographs.

If you are staying in West Yellowstone or Gardiner, our driver will pick you up right at your hotel lobby. If you are coming in from out of town, please meet at the Yellowstone Vacation Tours main office.

  • West Yellowstone Snowcoach tours meet at Yellowstone Park Hotel, located at 201 Grizzly Ave, West Yellowstone, MT 59758
  • Our Summer Bus Tour office is located at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.
  • Our Gardiner office is located at 905 Scott Street W, Gardiner, MT 59030.

We kindly ask that you be in your hotel lobby ready to go by 8:00am. If you are not staying overnight in West Yellowstone or Gardiner, please meet at the main office no later than 8:00am.

Purchasing boxed lunches for your party is highly recommended for all tours, particularly during the winter months when food service inside the Park is extremely limited, but during the summer months as well since summer crowds can result in long wait times for food service. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

Our snowcoaches do have heaters, but please come dressed for winter weather. We make several stops for you to get out and take pictures or take a short walk around, so you’ll be grateful to be dressed warmly during your time off the bus. We suggest dressing in layers so you can regulate your own personal temperature.
