SDCC 2022: New Era of Star Trek Comic Books Launches with Star Trek #1

New ongoing series from IDW to debut in October!

STAR TREK #1 (2022) promo art by Ramon Rosanas - Art Not Final

IDW is proud to announce a bold new direction in Star Trek comics, beginning with a brand-new flagship ongoing series that goes where no one has gone before! Debuting in October 2022, STAR TREK #1 features art by Ramon Rosanas ( Marvel’s Star Wars, Ant-Man ), and scripts by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing , the creative team behind Star Trek: Year Five .

STAR TREK #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek multiverse, bringing together characters from across the galaxy — and all eras and variations of the beloved franchise — who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods.

Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus , he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly – until Next Generation, Voyager , and Deep Space Nine came along!” Rosanas enthuses. “After that, I didn’t miss a single episode of those three series’ each week. Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

“Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing says. “We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before — an Avengers -style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.”

STAR TREK #1 - T'Lir character design by Ramon Rosanas

“Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever,” says Kelly. “We’re both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.”

“ Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future,” says editor Heather Antos, “of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.”

STAR TREK #1 will be available in October with eight variant covers for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Ramon Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey, Cover C by David Aja (TBC), Cover D by Rachael Stott, and a sketch Cover E, as well as three additional retailer incentive covers by Rosanas and Francesco Francavilla. Fans will also be delighted to read a STAR TREK #1 prelude story from Rosanas, Kelly, and Lanzing in September’s highly-anticipated STAR TREK #400 , a monumental anthology issue!

Finally, IDW’s next monthly  Star Trek series kicks off this October with Star Trek #1 , a new ongoing tale centered around Benjamin Sisko — after he’s returned from the Bajoran Wormhole — who must bring together characters from many eras of the  Trek saga for his mission.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (who helmed the recently-concluded  Star Trek: Year Five series) with art by Ramon Rosanas, this new monthly comic — which is the start of a massive new comic-based continuity.

star trek comic new

As IDW Publishing’s marketing director Keith Davidson puts it:

It’s the biggest initiative that IDW has ever undertaken for the brand in its now-14 years of Star Trek publication. Essentially, our new Star Trek series is creating a new ongoing IDW continuity, from which we will build offshoots, spin-offs, and epic events for years to come. Benjamin Sisko takes the helm of the Enterprise, supported by a crew of characters pulled quite literally from throughout Star Trek canon — even from The Original Series! Part of the fun will be seeing how the diverse personalities mesh or clash. Honestly, we’re hoping to channel with Star Trek what Marvel did when they launched their Star Wars comics a few years back — respecting the canon that came before while building a new universe for fans that’s wholly unique, unexpected, and accessible.

Writer Jackson Lanzing called the new  Star Trek monthly “a  Deep Space Nine sequel” on social media this week, and in a lengthy new interview with ComicBook.com, described the tale as one which fits into a neat year-and-a-half of time which no on-screen  Star Trek production has yet touched: the era between Voyager’s return home and the events of  Star Trek: Nemesis.

star trek comic new

As writer Collin Kelly described it to ComicBook.com:

They’re giving us a lot of access to all the toys, with the understanding that at the end of it, we will put the toys back in the box. There is about a year and a half here of Star Trek timeline that is untouched, and within this, we can make all sorts of trouble as long as we put the characters that need to be back in the box for Nemesis.

Lanzing also talked about how this new storyline will be canon — until it’s not.

This is as close as we can, on the comic side, to being canon. We will be canon until they un-canonize us. But we are working with the shows. We are in communication with the teams… We’re taking this as an opportunity to effectively fill [the space formerly occupied by the Trek novel continuity], because a lot of that stuff was created with the understanding there would never be shows again. [But] now we know that there will be, so we are trying to create new canon that exists inside that space. But these are the characters you know. This is the canonical Benjamin Sisko sequel story. This is the last ride of Data before Nemesis. These are those stories. This is what happened to Tom Paris after he came back from Voyager.

star trek comic new

Here’s the official synopsis for  Star Trek #1 — coming in October — where Captain Sisko is joined on his mission by first officer Data, medical officer Dr. Beverly Crusher, pilot Tom Paris, and new characters as well.

It’s stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #2, coming in November:

Tasked with a mission from the Prophets, Benjamin Sisko enlists the help of an old friend from Qo’noS to track the ship and persons responsible for slaying the gods.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #3, coming in December:

When strange malfunctions begin plaguing the U.S.S. Theseus mid-warp, Benjamin Sisko and his crew must band together to unveil the source behind the mysterious phenomena aboard the ship. But what initially appear as mere technological quagmires and strange happenings become a test that will determine the very fate of the universe.

Idw boldly goes in new direction with new ‘star trek’ #1 october 2022.

IDW launches a new era of Star Trek comic books with the debut of ‘Star Trek’ #1.

IDW has revealed Star Trek comics are getting a bold new direction with a new Star Trek #1 by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with artist Ramon Rosanas. The ongoing series promises to span the “far reaches” of the Star Trek multiverse bringing together characters from different areas and eras. Their hope? To defeat a mysterious murderer of the gods. The story will be a prelude to Rosanas, Lanzing and Kelly’s Star Trek #400 anthology issue.

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly–until Next Generation, Voyager, and  Deep Space Nine  came along!” Rosanas enthuses. “After that, I didn’t miss a single episode of those three series’ each week. Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

So what’s Star Trek #1 about?

Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.”

Paramount's " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " TV series was a smashing success in its debut season, offering a nostalgic, back-to-basics approach to the storied sci-fi franchise that attracted legions of fans using a traditional planet-of-the-week format that worked so well in "Star Trek: The Original Series."

To keep the bold space odyssey soaring until the second season, comic book publisher IDW Publishing recently announced a "Strange New Worlds" tie-in series coming to our galaxy in December.

Starring Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, Celia Rose Gooding, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Jess Bush, " Strange New Worlds " is a lighter, less depressing mission than the grim plots and extreme violence in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard."

To build on the success of the television series, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — The Illyrian Enigma" is a four-issue miniseries that unfolds in the timeline between the hit show's first season and its highly anticipated sophomore outing arriving sometime in 2023.

"The only thing more fun than 'Strange New Worlds' is more 'Strange New Worlds,'" said Johnson, Beyer, and Kirchoff in a joint IDW statement. NEW SERIES – Sons of Star Trek

Connor Schwigtenberg

The Star Trek comic universe grows with the New Series Sons of Star Trek , starting today from IDW Publishing. The series expands on the initiative that began with the 2022 Star Trek series, which also spun off into Star Trek: Defiant . Unlike those, however, this isn’t an ongoing series. Sons of Star Trek begins its miniseries, limited to four issues. It’s nice to have a smaller story feeding into a wider universe.

Making it better, this is written by Morgan Hampton, who just finished a phenomenal run on Cyborg for DC Comics. I think there’s real potential for this to be a similarly powerful story. Again there’s an emphasis on sons, fathers, and legacy. There’s plenty of emotional baggage after the Day of Blood story event, loads of characters to give the spotlight to, and a whole alternate reality to explore. Let’s delve into the latest IDW Star Trek offering in this review of Sons of Star Trek #1 !

SPOILER WARNING – This review will contain full spoilers. There are some cool surprises you definitely don’t want ruined, so turn away now if you’ve not read it!

Like Father, Like Son

star trek comic new

This series stars Jake Sisko, Nog, Worf’s son Alexander, and features a villainous turn from Q Junior. These are all these characters that exist in the shadow of their parents. Making them the center of their own story is an interesting take. The use of Alexander after his time in Kahless’ Red Path cult is a great way to delve into his mindset. Understanding what led to someone being so radicalized is key to stopping it from happening to someone else. This is something that Jake understands as well, intending to interview him as a journalist.

Jake shifting to journalism is a career detour from his time as a fiction writer which we saw through Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . He justifies this as his world is already full of the impossible and fantastical. Art, however, as Ben Sisko so well puts is as important to Starfleet as a captain. Hopefully Jake’s able to find some inspiration through this series, tell his own story, and forge his own path independent of his father’s position as the Emissary.

I think it’s particularly notable that outside of Ben, none of the other fathers are actually up in this issue. The story forces these characters to exist independently, without the influence of their parents. They’re all figuring out their places in the galaxy, and they’re doing it together. Even the vaguely antagonistic Q Junior is unsure of himself, probably trying to impress his father. However, he shows up for more than a conversation, dragging the characters into a whole new world.

Alternate Universe

star trek comic new

One of the big draws of this series is the move to an alternate universe. As a creation of Q Junior, it’s bound to be madness. The Federation’s at war with the Breen, Dukat’s in Starfleet, Tuvix is alive, and Morn’s in uniform. It’s a very different take on the universe we know and love. There’s a sense of defamiliarization with the characters watching this strange world unfold around them. While we learn very little, I hope the use of characters like Dukat leads to something more than the shock value of him turning up.

Actual Starfleet officers we’re familiar with occupy this ship as well. For instance, Beckett Mariner from Star Trek: Lower Decks , seems to be the character guiding the characters through this universe. Liam Shaw from Star Trek: Picard is also around, albeit substantially younger. It’s nice to see characters from the current series, especially since these comics tend to be a nostalgia trip for fans of the 90s Star Trek shows. Hopefully, this is something the series is able to keep up.

This universe is more than a universe, though. Q Junior has already reset it once, dragging the characters back in time to where they started. At first glance, this appears to be a trial, or a game being led by an all-powerful god. It’s not quite clear what Q’s motives are, but he’s just as powerful and mysterious as his father. The use of an alternate universe as well as a time trick makes this really stand out from everything that’s come before, so I’m definitely excited by this opening issue.

Sons of Star Trek #1 is a great introduction to this series. It wastes no time diving into the story. Jake’s motivations feel very real, trapped as a creative in a world full of the impossible. I’m not sure how this wraps up, or what lesson Q Junior is trying to impart, but there’s more than enough intrigue to keep me coming back for next month. This alternate reality trial is full of surprises and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Jake, Nog, and Alexander.

These are also inspired choices to lead a series. All of these characters exist within the shadow of their father, so having them step out into the spotlight feels long overdue. In a way, the same goes for Q Junior, who’s perhaps trying to forge his own legacy. The Sisko family however has a unique relationship with the Q Continuum, which leads to a really interesting dynamic between Jake and QJ. Although, I hope Jake’s able to find a different solution for his father.

You can pick up your own copy of Sons of Star Trek #1 , which is out now from IDW Publishing. It’s available to order both physically and digitally from online retailers such as Amazon, as well as IDW’s own website. You can also find it out on the shelves of all good comic book stores. Issue #2: Jake, Nog, and Alexander find themselves stuck in a never-ending loop of being blown to smithereens aboard the  U.S.S. Avery  and then revived by Q Jr.—who insists he’s helping them learn some lesson unbeknownst to them. Amid the attack from the Breen, the  Avery  crew and their strong-willed, bureaucratic captain, Skrain Dukat, refuse to listen to the trio’s musings about an alternate universe. Left with no other choice, they are forced to begrudgingly work together and attempt to step into their Starfleet roles in hopes of helping the Federation ship survive the attack and return home…or be stuck in this alternate reality forever!

The Fight Against The Space Parasites Isn’t Going Well For B’Elanna In Preview Of ‘Star Trek: Defiant’ #14

It’s amazing how many LGBT people are on Star Trek now. Love it.

Yeah, but unfortunately, the cover is missing the very first one: Jadzia Dax.

The cover is “missing” a character that doesn’t seem to be appearing in the comic? I don’t think it’s a problem NOT to falsely advertise her appearance. I’m hopeful they’ll do more of these in the future and include her.

Great art all around! Looking forward to it.

I know I shouldn’t be objectifying shirtless cartoon Sulu, but holy.

Yeah, they made him look ripped.

George looked like that in the original ep ‘naked time’

One can appreciate without objectification. We know he’s a upstanding officer and husband, he can be fit as well ;)

Happy birthday to O G ‘hikaru sulu’

So excited for this I preordered the regular cover and the variant with Mariner and Jennifer ! I hope they do this again next year. I love the DC Pride collection that comes out every year and the Star Wars Pride covers… Love to see Trek continue to expand this kind of anthology and include more characters as well (like Jadzia Dax.)

Screen Rant

Star trek's new "non-linear" threat confirms 1 weapon can damage the entire timeline.

Kahless' crusade against the gods in IDW's Star Trek comics has had dire effects on the universe, and now the entire timeline may be at risk too.

  • Star Trek #19, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Megan Levens, shows the true, horrifying extent of the damage Kahless' crusade against the gods has caused.
  • Kahless' rampage threatens not only the universe, but the entire timeline as well.
  • Finally, Kahless' campaign could lead to the destruction of the multiverse too.

Kahless’ crusade against the galaxy’s god-like beings has been a key part of IDW’s revitalized line of Star Trek comics, and now the damage he has done could threaten the entire timeline. In Star Trek #19, T’Lir, the enigmatic Vulcan who is revealed to be Organian, reveals just how much damage Kahless has caused to existence. Thanks to Kahless, time itself could come unraveled.

Star Trek #19 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. In the Theseus’ Ready Room, T’Lir briefs Captain Sisko and the crew on what happened to their fellow Organians. They tell Sisko that Kahless’ weapon has “tore at the very fabric of space-time.” T’Lir then goes on to reveal that the damage Kahless did was “non-linear” and it killed the Organians over 20 years prior.

T’Lir uses this as part of their case to convince Sisko to travel to the Pleroma, the newly revealed dimension of the gods.

Star Trek's God War Threatens More Than Just the Gods

Now, the entire star trek timeline is at risk of being destroyed.

In late 2022, IDW gave their Star Trek comics a shot in the arm, creating an epic, multi-year, multi-title story. The seeds were planted in Star Trek #400, when a mysterious force killed Gary Mitchell. The Bajoran Prophets sent Benjamin Sisko back to stop whoever was behind the slaughter of god-like beings. It was revealed to be the cloned Klingon Emperor Kahless. Seeking to fulfill the promise of his namesake, who allegedly slaughtered the Klingon gods, Kahless embarks on a campaign of terror. Both the Crystalline Entities and the Organians fell to Kahless.

It was made clear from the get-go that Kahless’ actions had the potential to seriously destroy the fabric of the universe. Both T’Lir and Spock arrive at this conclusion. While they were believed by Sisko and Starfleet, the exact amount of damage Kahless was causing was unknown. The gods Kahless was fighting were crucial to the smooth functioning of the universe, and now Kahless has thrown that into disarray. Sisko, T’Lir and the Theseus must now travel to the Pleroma to set things right. Kahless is still on the loose, and the Pleroma could be his next target.

Star Trek's Writers Have Promised Even Bigger Things to Come

Could star trek get its own version of secret wars.

It is crucial that Sisko and company stop Kahless, because now it seems that the destruction he has wrought is spreading through the timeline. Kahless’ actions have rippled across the time stream, killing the Organians and others like them. Kahless’ actions not only threaten the prime Star Trek universe, but the entire multiverse as well. In a recent interview with ScreenRant , writers Lanzing and Kelly revealed “The Pleroma” storyline sets up even bigger things for the title. Kahless posing a threat to the entire Star Trek multiverse would be the perfect capstone for the series.

Star Trek #19 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!
