Survivor (formed in 1978) is an American hard rock band best known for its heavy-hitting arena-filling sound and double platinum single “Eye of the Tiger”, hailing from Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

Founded by former Ides of March guitarist and keyboardist Jim Peterik in 1978, the guitarist subsequently invited guitarist Drankie Sullivan and lead singer Dave Bickler to record an eponymous debut album. Featuring session musician Dennis Johnson on bass and Gary Smith on drums, the 1980 album spawned the Chicago hit single “Somewhere in America”. Bass player Stephen Ellis and drummer Marc Droubay were subsequently added to the lineup for the supporting tour and future releases.

Survivor earned their breakthrough upon being asked by Sylvester Stallone to write the soundtrack to “Rocky III” and returned with the smash hit single “Eye of the Tiger”. With arena-filling sound, a seductive opening riff and climatic prowess, the record spent six weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and later won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. The album “Eye of the Tiger” followed later in 1982, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and producing the singles “Ever Since the World Began” and “American Heartbeat”.

Unable to promote their third album due to lead singer Bickler’s vocal perils, 1983’s “Caught in the Game” was a commercial disappointment, peaking at No. 82 on the Billboard 200. By early 1984 Bickler was ordered to continue resting his throat, which resulted in him being replaced by former Target and Cobra frontman Jimi Jamison. The new singer's debut “The Moment of Truth” arrived in 1984, known as the theme song to the film “The Karate Kid”. Peaking at No. 63 the single paved the way for Jamison’s debut album “Vital Signs” in August 1984, representing a resurgence in popularity for the group. Spawning the No. 13 single “I Can’t Hold Back”, No. 8 “High on You”, and No. 4 “The Search is Over”, the record marked Survivor’s reluctance to become a one-hit-wonder band.

A year later the band contributed the song “Burning Heart” to the “Rocky IV” soundtrack, which later peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The full-length “When Seconds Count” followed in 1986, led by the single “Is This Love”, after which bassist Ellis developed a stomach ulcer and needed roadie Rocko Reedy to fill-in. A year later Survivor’s seventh studio album “Too Hot to Sleep” was released, which the band supported with an unusually modest tour. Following the album's release Survivor took a hiatus, however, ultimately returned in 2006 to issue their eighth full-length album “Reach”.

Live reviews

‘Eye of the Tiger’ may be one of the biggest rock tracks of all time, but any suggestion that Survivor are one-hit wonders should be give short shrift. During their eighties heyday, they notched up a further four top ten hits in their native U.S., including ‘Burning Heart’, ‘The Search Is Over’, ‘High on You’ and ‘Is This Love’, and continued in the face of some serious adversity, including the flop of 1983 Eye of the Tiger follow-up Caught in the Game (it peaked at number eighty-two in the U.S.) and an apparent revolving door policy as far as the lineup was concerned, with Jimi Jamison’s replacement of Dave Bickler as frontman the most obvious upheaval. After a brief split running from 1989 to 1993, the band have been recording and touring ever since, although constant changes to the lineup have made the former a fraught process; a legal battle over who actually owned the rights to the name Survivor dominated proceedings for the band through the nineties, and as a result, only 2006’s Reach is an official post-eighties release by the band. Presently, the band are touring with both Bickler and Jamison, allowing them to tap into both singers’ share of their expansive back catalogue, which will no doubt prove a serious treat for fans; they’ve lined up a slew of dates in the UK for October, so you can find out for yourself then.

The photo shown is NOT the current line-up. Dave Bikler is NOT currently performing with Survivor, or Walter-the keyboard player.

I went to Epcot at Disney World and saw them perform every show- great sounding band! Cameron the lead singer currently working with them is AMAZING- great VOICE!! Yes he could dance a bit more- but what a VOICE !!!

The BAND sounded great and the keyboard solo with Frankie was a definite HIGHLIGHT !!

Hoping to catch them in Florida again in 2019!!

SONGKICK- FIX THE PHOTO- super misleading to people....

About survivor.

Survivor is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1978 by guitarist/songwriter Jim Peterik. The band achieved its greatest success in the 1980s, producing many charting singles, especially in the United States. The band is best known for its double platinum-certified 1982 hit "Eye of the Tiger", the theme song for the motion picture Rocky III (US number 1 for 6 weeks). Singles like "Burning Heart" (US number 2), "The Search Is Over" (US number 4), "High on You" (US number 8), "Is This Love" (US number 9) and "I Can't Hold Back" (US number 13) continued to chart in the mid-1980s. The band tweaked its musical direction in 1988 with the release of the slightly heavier Too Hot to Sleep, but due to lackluster promotion the album barely reached the Billboard 200 in the United States. Because of this and tension between founding members, the band split. Singer Jimi Jamison later toured as "Survivor" in the mid-1990s without the permission of the rest of the band, but reunited with guitarist Frankie Sullivan in 2000. The band then released Reach in 2006, but Jamison left again after its release and was replaced by singer Robin McAuley. Survivor continued to tour with McAuley into 2011 until Jamison returned later that year. In April 2013 it was announced by the band's official media sources that guitarist Frankie Sullivan had reunited the current Survivor line-up with original singer Dave Bickler, with the band now having their two most popular vocalists together for the next tour, Bickler and Jamison. On August 31, 2014 Jamison died of what was believed to be a heart attack in his home in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 63. His autopsy released on November 11, 2014 revealed the actual cause of death to be a hemorrhagic brain stroke, with "acute methamphetamine intoxication contributing".

Richie Sambora apologizes for abrupt Bon Jovi exit, compares it to leaving the mafia

"I guess if you're in the mafia, the only thing you possibly do is disappear. And I did," the rocker says in the band's new docuseries, "Thank You, Goodnight."

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Looking back, Richie Sambora regrets the way that he chose to leave Bon Jovi .

In the final episode of the new Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , the guitarist apologized for his controversial decision to exit the legendary rock band just hours before they were set to perform in Calgary on their 2013 Because We Can tour. But Sambora also asserted that the group "knew exactly why I didn't get on the plane that night" during his interview for the doc, which premiered Friday.

"People have this preconceived notion of Richie Sambora because they read about me in the tabloids, because they see the Bon Jovi machine," he said. "It's a band. It's really, really hard to be married to four other guys and be in close quarters and that, coupled with my daughter coming of age."

At the time, Sambora, who had previously entered rehab in 2007 and 2011, cited personal issues as the reason for his sudden disappearance, but he later told PEOPLE that the decision came specifically from needing to put his health and relationship with daughter Ava first. So musician Phil X, who filled in for Sambora in 2011, returned to cover the rest of the band’s 2013 tour dates.

Kevin Mazur/Getty

“I don’t regret leaving the situation, but I regret how I did it,” Sambora clarified in the docuseries. “So I’d like to apologize fully right now to the fans, especially, and also to the guys, because my feet and my spirit were just not letting me walk out the door.”

He added, “I guess if you’re in the mafia, the only thing you possibly do is disappear. And I did.”

Despite a difficult start, the rest of tour went off without a hitch, with the group missing none of their 80 performances. “At the end of the day, there was disappointment and sadness and anger, but it didn’t matter to the public,” frontman Jon Bon Jovi recalled in the docuseries. “It was the number-one-grossing tour in the world that year, and that was that.”

The “Wanted Dead or Alive” singer admitted that he continues to “hold out for hope” that Sambora will one day return. “I think it’s sort of like you’re in a marriage or a family that has a situation like this and you’re always hoping that the family member’s gonna get better and everything’s gonna be peachy," he said.

Jovi also noted that he will always feel a “void” without Sambora on stage beside him. “The true magic of our live performance was when we sang together… that was our unique spot,” he said. “It was as identifiable as any great combination that made one and one three. And I don’t think that’s been replaced, no.”

These days, Sambora reflects on his time in Bon Jovi with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

“Jon and I touched the planet with those songs. You realize that you were warriors that love each other, watched each other’s backs, told each other the truth,” he said. “If anybody doesn’t think that we were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jimmy [Page] and Robert [Plant], any way you wanna slice it… come on!”

Alarm Frontman Mike Peters Reveals New Cancer Diagnosis, Band Postpones 2024 North American Tour

by Matt Friedlander April 29, 2024, 3:37 pm

Mike Peters, frontman for the veteran Welsh new-wave band The Alarm , has received a new cancer diagnosis, forcing the group to postpone its Live Today Love Tomorrow Tour of North America.

Videos by American Songwriter

The trek, which also was to feature support acts Jay Aston’s Gene Love Jezebel and Belouis Some, was slated to kick off Wednesday, May 1, in New Orleans.

[RELATED: Mike Peters Defies Cancer, Pushes The Alarm into Forwards ]

The 65-year-old Peters has battled cancer for decades. He was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 1995, then with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) in 2005. He suffered recurrences of CLL multiple times, most recently in 2022, but on Sunday, April 21, he discovered that he was facing a new health challenge.

That morning, Peters discovered a large swollen gland on his neck. On Monday, April 22, he was examined by his hematologist, Dr. Earnest Heartin, at a cancer treatment center in Bodelwyddan, Wales. An emergency biopsy determined that the singer’s CLL had transformed into a high-grade lymphoma that needs immediate treatment.

Peters’ Message About His Diagnosis and Potential Tour Plans

Peters has written a lengthy message about his illness and potential future touring plans that has been posted on TheAlarm.com .

“I have no doubt that the … news will come as a complete shock to you in the same way that it has also come as a bolt out of the blue to me and my family,” he wrote of the lymphoma diagnosis.

Peters reported that he’s now waiting to have a PET scan and a heart scan, as well as “consultations with the team at the Christie Institute in Manchester [U.K.] before confirming the exact specifics of my new treatment regime.”

Peters noted that once he gets the results of the biopsy and his treatment plans are in place, he will write fans again about his “plan for recovery and how I’m going to make it through what I know will be the most challenging time of my life.”

The singer continued, “I am still reeling from the consequences of this new and completely unforeseen diagnosis and doing my best to process what is happening. I’m grateful for the love and understanding of everyone affected by the tour postponement and hoping and praying with all that I have, that this is just a pause in the story of my life, and that normal service will be able to resume soon.”

Peters Reflects on His Cancer Battle

Peters then reflected on his long cancer battle, while noting how resolved he is on beating the disease.

“Cancer has been chasing me for 29 years now, and in all that time, I have managed to outrun the disease and stay alive,” he said. “My focus and resolve remain the same, and I’m determined to keep running even harder to stay one step ahead and resume my life as a husband, father, and musician as soon as possible.”

He finished his message by thanking fans for their understanding, and promising to keep them updated about his health battle.

Peters’ Cancer Charity

After Peters’ initial cancer diagnosis in 1995, he created the Love Hope Strength Foundation with his wife, Jules Peters, who is and a breast cancer survivor. The charity seeks to raise awareness of and fight against cancer via advocacy and organizing bone marrow drives.

Since its inception, Love Hope Strength has registered 250,000 people onto International Stem Cell Registries, and has identified more than 4,500 potential matches for donors. For more information, visit LoveHopeStrength.org .

More About the Postponed Tour Dates

The Live Today Love Tomorrow Tour had been scheduled through a July 6 show in Clearwater, Florida. The Alarm also has had to cancel an appearance at the star-studded Cruel World festival on May 11 in Pasadena, California.

About The Alarm

Among The Alarm’s many songs that reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart are “Sixty Eight Guns,” “Strength,” “Spirit of ’76,” “Rain in the Summertime,” “Sold Me Down the River,” and “The Road.”

Peters’ wife, Jules, plays keyboards in The Alarm’s current lineup.

The band released its latest album, Music Television , on April 19. The project is made up mostly of cover versions of songs by some of The Alarm’s contemporaries from the early MTV era. They include renditions of tunes by Dire Straits, The Buggles, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Phil Collins, Modern English, and their tour mates Gene Loves Jezebel and Belouis Some.

Woman killed when tornado tears through sports bar, burying patrons in rubble

SULPHUR, Okla. (KOCO) - A tornado survivor recounted the moment when a tornado tore through her Oklahoma bar, killing one of her regulars.

“I turned around at the point, I turned around and I dove under the bar. And I got to the side of the bar and the floor,” Raina Valkoun said. “I got flat, and next thing I knew all of the rubble was on top of me.”

Valkoun recounted the moment strong storms blew out her bar’s windows in downtown Sulphur, Oklahoma. By the time she took cover, the building had collapsed.

She thinks at least 12 people were still inside when the structure gave way.

Valkoun was buried for 40 minutes.

“All I heard was more screaming and I was under there just trying, I had a pocket of air, so I just kept trying to calm myself down,” she said.

Valkoun was eventually pulled from the pile of debris, along with others that were at the bar. Unfortunately, one of her patrons didn’t emerge.

She said the customer had been standing at the bar’s front door. The woman was a regular at Raina’s Sports Lounge for more than a decade.

“She used to sit right next there, that was her seat,” Valkoun said, pointing to the customer’s usual spot in her bar.

Valkoun said the woman’s kids were her life.

“Oh, she was a grandmother, has two children, a boy and a girl,” Valkoun said. “Fantastic woman, used to bring us food every Friday night for us to eat, sometimes good, sometimes it wasn’t, but most times it was good.”
