Tate McRae is coming back to Canada on tour, but she's 'terrified' to perform in Calgary

"honestly, people always get so mad because i don't perform in calgary," the music artist said ahead of her 20-city north american tour.

From TikTok to Spotify, radios and Peloton bikes, Tate McRae from Calgary, Alta., has taken the world by storm and sets off on her North American tour Sept. 5 .

For Canadian fans of this homegrown talent's music, McRae will be in Montreal on Sept. 10, and in Toronto Sept. 11 and Sept. 12.

But yes, the singer-songwriter is well aware of the city notably missing from her tour schedule.

"Honestly, people always get so mad because I don't perform in Calgary," McRae told Yahoo Canada . "I'm genuinely so terrified to perform in my hometown, just because I know so many people."

"But I love Montreal. I love Vancouver. I love Toronto, everywhere else I literally think are some of the best crowds."

The "she's all i wanna be" singer and So You Think You Can Dance alum really solidified her spot as a global sensation during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but back when she was 13 years old she uploaded a YouTube video of herself singing a song she wrote titled "One Day." That video quickly went viral, and now has 39 million views.

She kept posting songs online and eventually dropped her debut EP "All The Things I Never Said" in 2020. Her album "I Used to Think I Could Fly" was released last year.

McRae's songs have inspired TikTok trends around the world, she made the Forbes "30 Under 30 List" in 2021 and last year her single "You Broke Me First" reached 1 billion plays on Spotify. And that's just a few of her accomplishments.

'I feel like I'm living sometimes two separate lives, two different identities'

While the star has made the move from Calgary to Los Angeles, she shared that she does try to spend a lot of time in Canada over the Christmas holiday and in the summer, being around "down to earth" people.

"I do believe that Canadians are just genuinely, really, really good people," McRae said. "When I come home, it's always very refreshing to be around very normal, down to earth people."

"It feels like a totally different world. Being a singer in Calgary I feel like is kind of unheard of, a little bit. The creative space I feel like is just starting to expand now. So coming home I feel like I'm getting whipped back into my high school self. So it's always a weird whirlwind feeling. I feel like I'm living sometimes two separate lives, two different identities."

McRae also shared that when she was a teen, she struggled with feeling "embarrassed" to pursue her passion.

"I think that's because everyone's going to judge someone who [does] something different," she said. "I always felt that way in high school."

"People would look at me like I had two heads when I'd come to school after posting a song that I had written online. I think it's just having the balls to put yourself out there and be courageous in a sense, because I feel like that's the only way that you're going to be able to do stuff that you're really, really passionate about."

With the 20-year-old now set to take on a 20-city tour, there's so much excitement from the Canadian superstar.

"I've been writing for the past 10, 11 months, so it feels so good to be going back on the road again," McRae said. "It just feels good to be able to see my fans again and be able to release new music at the same time. It's going to be exciting."

"It's such a high. I think the feeling of writing songs and performing on stage is a perfect example of me being an introvert and an extrovert. I feel like the moment on stage, ... all the hard work you put into writing the songs I feel like gets validated by your fans relating to them, and putting them into their own lives. I think that's just the most special thing you can see as an artist."

'I think this lifestyle can get very overwhelming at times'

As many would expect, being on the road, performing and travelling from city to city, can take a physical and mental toll on an artist. That's why you'll see McRae drinking her Essentia water at every rehearsal (she's an ambassador for the brand), staying hydrated and eating well.

"I think this lifestyle can get very overwhelming at times," McRae explained. "Usually what happens is that it all happens at once, so you film music videos and you're finalizing all your music, and you're going on tour, literally within a three-week span."

"So it's always so interesting because it always happens in the spur of the moment, which I think is a big adrenaline rush, but then also stressful. So I think it's just, by keeping sane, it's just making sure that you're internally happy so that you can be your best external self."

But just before McRae sets off on her tour, fans got a little extra treat with the star featured in the "bad idea right?" music video for her friend Olivia Rodrigo, appearing alongside Iris Apatow and Madison Hu.

"She's one of my best friends in L.A. and I love her to death, and she's obviously so talented," McRae said about Rodrigo. "But I think all the girls in that music video are just actors and in the musical space, and the creative space, so it feels like a really cool girl power moment when we all get to hang out and put our arts together."

That is also evidence of the important friendships McRae has been able to establish with other women in the music and entertainment industry, particularly following her move to the U.S.

"I think everyone in this industry is a lot more similar than we think," McRae said. "So when you get to meet really special people who are down to earth and feel like they have the right intentions, and are just good, genuine people, you want to keep them close as much as possible."

"So even though I have a small circle they're very, very important to me."

As McRae's career evolves, having now moved into her 20s, the artist says her songs and this tour will reflect her more "mature" era of music.

"That's been the hardest part because as you get older your music taste constantly changes," McRae said. "One minute I'm so heavy into rap music, and the next minute I'm into country music and pop music, and I think it changes like every single week at this point."

"I think my lyrics are always the thing that stays the most consistent within my music, and the rest is kind of just experimental."

Pop star Tate McRae is set for a homecoming next year during the Calgary Stampede.

Tate McRae to headline hometown Cowboys Music Festival Back to video

The Calgary-born artist will come home for a set during the Cowboys Music Festival on July 5, it was announced Friday morning.

The announcement comes after a massive year for the young star, having recently released her album Think Later and being a musical guest on the legendary Saturday Night Live alongside Jason Momoa.

One of the songs she performed during her set on SNL was Greedy, a piece that has helped her career jump to new heights. The song has garnered more than 426 million streams on Spotify, making it McRae’s biggest hit.

Her assured performance of the song on SNL showcased a confident performer who seemed comfortable in a sexy pop-star mould alongside some backup dancers. She certainly didn’t seem nervous, but admits she was.

“SNL was the biggest dream come true,” she previously told Postmedia. “I did not expect to even get that call at all any time soon. So it was like a big shock for me, I was sobbing. Even just being in that building that has so much history of the greatest artists of all time. I was like, ‘This is such an honour to even be here and have my name up on the wall right beside Jason Momoa. It was just like a big whirlwind.

“Mom and Dad were fan-girling so hard on so many of the actors. It was a really surreal process. I haven’t been so nervous for something in a very long time. It’s so live: you get one shot and the show is over.”

In mid-November, Spotify named her Canada’s EQUAL Ambassador, a program designed to amplify “women creators around the world” and “combat gender disparity.”

In 2024, McRae is set to start a 53-date global tour in April that will take her to London, Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Sydney and Melbourne.

From Calgary to Billboard’s Top 100, Tate McRae has just announced her first world tour and it might not surprise you to know where she’s kicking off the North American leg.

As part of the 2024 Cowboys Music Festival, Tate Mcrae will play her first big hometown show on July 5th, 2024.

Today, singer-songwriter  Tate McRae  announced her  ARE WE FLYING TOUR  with  charlieonnafriday  joining as support across all dates. Produced by Live Nation, the 2023 fall tour   kicks off the 20-city run on Tuesday, September 5 in Chicago at Riviera Theatre, with stops across North America in Detroit, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and more before wrapping up on Friday, October 13 in Seattle at Paramount Theatre.

TICKETS:  Tickets for the ARE WE FLYING TOUR will be using advance registration to ensure more tickets get into the hands of fans directly by helping to filter out bots and scalpers from the ticket purchase process. Tate McRae Announces Sophomore Album ‘Think Later’ & 2024 World Tour Dates

Don’t get “Greedy,” but fans are about to see a lot more of Tate McRae. The 20-year-old pop star announced on Monday (Nov. 6) that her sophomore album Think Later will be arriving on Dec. 6 via RCA Records.

“We’re here guys. My sophomore album. This album means sooo much to me and I can’t believe it’s so close to coming out,” she wrote on Instagram alongside the album artwork, which features McRae standing against a black background with the album name written across her hockey leg pads. “Writing this whole thing was one of the most stressful, exciting, nerve racking, and fun things I’ve ever gone through. For the first time in my life I lived this year a little less with my head and a little more with my intuition – and I rlly hope u guys can feel that through the music. Through the biggest highs of my life to the lowest of lows – I feel so happy that it is now gonna be yours <3 Here’s to 20 years old and figuring who the f— I am haha”

The album, co-executive produced with Ryan Tedder, will feature McRae’s previously released hit song, “Greedy,” which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.

In addition to the Think Later announcement, McRae also revealed that she’ll be embarking on a 53-date 2024 tour in support of the album. The tour kicks off on April 17 in Dublin, Ireland, and will span across continents with shows in London, Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Sydney, Melbourne and more before wrapping up in Wellington, New Zealand, on November 21. Billie Eilish, Green Day and Cyndi Lauper, as well as Canadian artists Blue Rodeo, The Sadies and Le Ren, are amongst the signees of a new letter in support of the Fans First Act, which would ban fake tickets and mandate clearer ticket pricing.

Major artists are speaking out about the state of concert ticketing.

"The current system is broken," reads a new letter signed by over 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Cyndi Lauper, Lorde and more. The letter, dubbed "Fix The Tix," addresses pervasive issues in the ticketing industry, like fake tickets, misleading marketing strategies and unclear pricing.

Addressed to Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, the respective Chair and Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation, the letter calls on the legislators to support the Fans First Act. The Act would take a series of steps to make ticketing more transparent for consumers, including banning "deceptive marketing tactics," which lure fans into "paying more for tickets that may never get them into a show."

"Predatory resellers have gone unregulated while siphoning money from the live entertainment ecosystem for their sole benefit," the letter reads. "As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else. We are joining together to say that the current system is broken."

Though the letter addresses American lawmakers, ticket resale practices are not limited to the U.S., and several Canadian acts have signed in support of letter's aims, including Blue Rodeo, The Sadies, Cowboy Junkies, Suzie Ungerleider and Alvvays' Alec O'Hanley.

"Marking tickets up is indicative of yet another layer in a broken system," Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spear, who releases music as Le Ren and signed on to the letter, tells Billboard Canada . "It's hard enough making money with streaming services taking revenue away from artists. Markups create an invisible hand that both gatekeeps the audience and pockets money that should be going to the labour of the musicians and crew."

Problematic ticketing practices

Concert tickets have become a major news story in the last several years, with frustrated fans struggling to acquire tickets to their see their favourite artists. Ticketmaster has been a primary focus of consumer and artist ire, with Taylor Swift fans suing the ticketing giant after facing exorbitant prices and technical difficulties when trying to get Eras Tour tickets . “Ticketmaster is a monopoly that is only interested in taking every dollar it can from a captive public,” one lawsuit — later dropped — alleged .

Reportedly, the U.S. Department of Justice is now planning to sue Live Nation , which merged with Ticketmaster in 2010, for violating federal antitrust laws. The lawsuit is expected to land in the coming weeks.

The Fix The Tix letter doesn't mention Ticketmaster, and is instead focused on "predatory resellers," who purchase tickets at source and resell them at much higher price points. The letter claims such resellers also use "deceitful advertising," designed to hide that the tickets are re-sale and not face-value purchases, and decries the practice of "speculative tickets" — selling tickets that the seller doesn't actually have, which can result in fans getting turned away from shows.

"No one cares more about fans than the artists," the letter says. "When predatory resellers scoop up face-value tickets ahead of fans in order to resell at inflated prices on the secondary market, artists lose the ability to connect with their fans who cannot afford to attend."

The Fans First Act would also require ticket sellers to display the full price of a ticket from the outset of a purchase, tackling hidden fees that often catch consumers by surprise at the end of a transaction.

Canadian artist Tate McRae announced 2024 tour dates in conjunction with her upcoming album, Think Later .

The new shows are planned at large-scale venues in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand from April into November. The opening act on select dates will be charlieonnafriday or Presley Regier. Over 50 concerts are scheduled at this time.

Tate McRae has announced her forthcoming second album, along with a world tour to promote it.

Think Later  will be released on December 8, the Calgary-born singer announced on Instagram today (November 6). Along with the album's cover, which features her in hockey goalie pads, she posted a caption about the album, saying "this album means sooo much to me and i can’t believe it’s so close to coming out. writing this whole thing was one of the most stressful, exciting, nerve racking, and fun things i’ve ever gone through.

"for the first time in my life i lived this year a little less with my head and a little more with my intuition - and i rlly hope u guys can feel that through the music," she continues. "through the biggest highs of my life to the lowest of lows - i feel so happy that it is now gonna be yours <3 here’s to 20 years old and figuring who the fuck i am haha."

A press release states that  Think Later  was executive produced with hitmaker Ryan Tedder (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé) and showcases "Tate’s boundless vocal talent and evolution as a songwriter, this new body of work explores the all-too-relatable feelings of falling in love and embracing the raw emotions that you experience as a result of leading with your intuition and heart."

While no tracklisting has been revealed yet, the album will feature her current single, "Greedy." McRae released her debut album,  I Used to Think I Could Fly , in May 2022. 

Along with the album, McRae also announced a world tour. The  Think Later  World Tour will begin in Dublin, Ireland on April 17, followed by a full European tour. She returns back in North America on July 5 for a hometown show in Calgary, AB, then dips down to the U.S. for a string of shows before playing Toronto's Budweiser Stage on July 27. More U.S. dates then precede a trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Tickets for the tour will be available starting with an AMEX presale beginning tomorrow (November 7). Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on sale beginning Friday, November 10 at 10:00AM local time at  TateMcRae.com .

In addition to the tour, McRae will also make her Saturday Night Live debut as   musical guest debut on November 18 along with host Jason Momoa.

Tate McRae Covered Ariana Grande’s ‘We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love),’ And The Person Recording It Started Sobbing

All available evidence indicates that Tate McRae is very happy with The Kid Laroi, who publicly confirmed their relationship during his The First Time Tour stop in Dublin, Ireland, on April 14. That did not prevent her from bodying a cover of Ariana Grande’s Billboard Hot 100 chart topper “ We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love) ,” a bonafide breakup anthem.

McRae performed the song during her headlining Think Later World Tour concert in London earlier this week. A fan-recorded video made the rounds on X (formerly Twitter), and by the end of McRae’s rendition, the person recording the video was audibly sobbing.

Someone named Maureen asked, “omg did someone ask her to sing it or did she just do it?” The McRae fan account @t8mcraetours responded, “she said before she sang ‘this is my first cover this tour’ so she probably wanted to do it herself.”

McRae’s tour in support of her December LP Think Later will continue throughout the UK and Europe until late May. The North American leg is scheduled to kick off on July 5 at Cowboys Music Festival in her hometown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Grande has not confirmed any plans to tour in support of Eternal Sunshine , so McRae’s cover might be the closest anyone gets to hearing it performed live — at least in the immediate or intermediate future.

Tate McRae is bringing her “Think Later World Tour 2024″ to Pa.

The pop/dance pop singer will perform on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024 , on the Highmark Skyline Stage at the Mann Center in Philadelphia.

After performing in Europe this spring, she starts a North American leg of the tour in July in Canada. That leg goes through August, ending in New York City.

The tour includes an Aug. 13 concert at The Anthem in Washington, D.C.; Aug. 19 at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey; and Aug. 22 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Tate McRae – THINK LATER WORLD TOUR Bangkok stop – Venue, ticket prices, and more

The Bangkok stop for THINK LATER WORLD TOUR will be held at UOB Live, The Emsphere on 2 November 2024. Ticket prices start from THB 1,500 and go up to THB 9,000 for the VIP tier.

UOB card holders have special access to presale tickets in Bangkok starting from 26 April (Friday), 10am to 27 April (Sunday), 10am.

Live Nation members can secure tickets during the exclusive Live Nation presale on 29 April (Monday), from 12pm to 11:59pm. Tickets to the public will be available on 30 Apr (Tuesday), from 12 noon via Ticketmaster .

Who is Tate McRae?

Born in Calgary, Canada, Tate McRae is a rising music artist to watch since receiving countless accolades, including nominations for two Billboard Music Awards, an MTV VMA Award, multiple People’s Choice Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards and JUNO Awards, among others. She was also the youngest musician on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2021.

McRae released her debut album in 2022, ‘ i used to think i could fly’,  which landed at number one on Spotify’s Global Top Albums Debut Chart and charted in the Top 10 in multiple countries upon release. This album has notable writing collaborators and producers including Greg Kurstin, Finneas, Charlie Puth, Alexander 23, Blake Slatkin, and more.

What propelled Tate McRae to greater heights was the infectious lead single ‘greedy’ from her sophomore album  THINK LATER . The TikTok viral song went to number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart and Spotify’s Global chart. In addition, the album debuted at #4 on Billboard’s album chart and has garnered over 2.1 billion streams worldwide.
