About Tirupati

Timurala Venkateswara Temple, or simply known as Tirupati, is the most famous pilgrimage destination of South India , and the most popular one. It is located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh , about 750KM southwest of Vishakhapatnam, and is also home to other historic and ancient temples. Hence, the town is also referred to as the Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The temple, the highlight of the Tirupati map, is perched on and is surrounded by the Tirumala Hills, which are a part of the Sheshachalam Hills Range. They are also called the Tirupati hills. The hills rise to about 2799ft. above sea level, offering great views of the surrounding landscape of forests and waterfalls.

The hills are distinguished by seven peaks, which are mythological representations of the seven heads of Adisesha . The Tirupati temple sits on the 7 th peak – Venkatadri , adjacent to the Swami Pushkarini Lake. Hence it is also called the Temple of the Seven Hills . The entire town, including the temple, covers an area of 26.75 km2 and has a population of 287,035.

The name Tirupati is derived from its Dravidian origin , which translates to “ sacred abode ”.

History of Tirupati Balaji Temple

It is believed that Venkateswara, an avatar of Vishn u appeared on what is presently the temple site, to save mankind from the sufferings of the Kali Yuga. Most ruling dynasties like the Pallavas, Cholas, and the Vijayanagar Kings were devotees of this temple. The first official administration of the temple was set up by Maratha general, Raghoji I Bhosle.

Then during the colonial rule, the British East India Company oversaw the management and handed it to the Mahants of Hathiramji Muth . It was only in 1933, under the TTD Act, the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams trust was formed to manage and conduct all activities in Tirupathi and other temples in Tirumala.

Interesting Facts

One of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, Tirupati Temple is frequented by nearly 100,000 people daily , who come here for the sole purpose of Tirupati darshan. On special occasions and festival, the number goes up to 500,00 0, making it the most-visited holy place in the world.

It is also considered to be the richest Hindu temple in the world , with respect to the donations it receives and the wealth accumulated thereof. The reason behind such endowments is associated with a legend in the Puranas.

It is said that Ventakeswara loaned about 11.4 million gold coins from Kuber for his marriage to Padmavathi. With that money, he hired Viswakarma, the divine architect to create the majestic abode. In remembrance, devotees donate money, gold, and other material endowments to the temple, so Venkateshwara can pay back Kuber. It is said that the donations to Tirupati temple go as high as 22.5 million INR per day .

Another interesting aspect of Tirupati is its fundamental belief in equality and prohibits any sacrificial offerings , unlike many other Hindu temples or as in other sects of Hinduism.

Om Namo Venkatesaya. Om Namo Venkatesaya. Om Namo Venkatesaya.

The powerful chanting inside Sri Venkateswara Temple exudes a positive energy that stays with you long after you have left the sanctum.

A visit to this temple is the highlight of any trip to Tirupati. The mad rush, non-stop chanting, high security, heavily adorned idol and the compelling aura around the deity – everything about Tirupati is simply alluring. Nothing more, nothing less. The Venkateshwara temple is a is a religious landmark and is thronged by masses of people perrenially. The temple is also referred to as the “Temple of seven hills” and is spread over a massive 26.75 sq.kms of area. Shri Venkateshwara temple is the wealthiest temple in the Indian subcontinent because of the number of donations offered every year. The temple provides food to the pilgrims, includes pilgrim lodging centers and hair tonsure buildings. To visit Tirupati Balaji, is finding tranquility among chaos.

Don’t leave Tirupati before you:

  • Visit Sri Venkateswara Swamy Vaari Temple : The most popular tourist destination  and religious attraction in the city, it is located on the Tirumala hilltop, 18 kilometres from Tirupati. Millions of devotees come here to get a glimpse of the eight-foot tall idol of Lord Venkateswara adorned with gold, diamonds and flowers and standing under the gilded dome, Ananda Nilaya Divya Vimana .

  • Discover Sri Kalahasti Temple : Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sri Kalahasti Temple is an hour’s drive from Tirupati and should be visited if you are planning a trip to Tirupati. It is reflective of the Chola and Vijayanagara styles of architecture. Famous for its Vayu Linga , which represents wind, Sri Kalahasti Temple is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Stalams . Do not forget to visit this place if you plan a trip to Tirupati.
  • Savour the local cuisine : Whether it’s the laddu maha prasadam from Tirupati Balaji Temple , an authentic South Indian fare at a local restaurant or a delicious cup of filter coffee, Tirupati is a foodie’s delight. Some popular eateries are Andhra Spice, Hyderabad House and Maurya Restaurant.
  • Do try and visit Tirupati during the celebration of their various festivals, the air is charged with energy as masses of people negotiate the crowd to pay their respects to the deity. The experience is surreal.
  • Try the Prasadam offered to pilgrims by the temple, its the famous “Tirupati ladoo”.  Tirupati Laddu had got  Geographical indication  tag which entitles only  Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams  to make or sell it. Many other prasadams are also available including daddojanam (curd rice), puliohora (tamarind rice), vada and chakkera-pongali (sweet pongal), miryala-pongali, Appam, Paayasam, Jilebi, Muruku, Dosa, seera (kesari), Malhora. Free meals are given daily to the pilgrims. On Thursdays, the Tirupavada seva is conducted, where food items are kept as naivedyam to Lord Venkateswara.

Insider Tip

Book your trip to Tirupati temple darshan at least a month in advance as about 60,000 pilgrims visit it every day, making it one of the most visited temples in the world. You can also book a VIP break darshan that gets you inside the main chamber within four hours.

Where To Stay

While there are many hotels in Tirupati , it is recommended that you book a guesthouse or Kalyana Mandapam located close to the main temple. Hotels like Fortune Select Grand Ridge , Ginger Tirupati , Sri Sai Residency and Bhimas Deluxe Hotel are hotels available at Rs. 500-3000 per night.

Did You Know?

The Tirupati temple is amongst the richest temples in the world. You will see people giving away bags of gold and other valuables at the Sri Vari Hundi here. It is believed that up to a whopping Rs. 650 crores are collected in donations every year.

Story behind the donations:  It is believed that Lord Srinivasa had to make arrangements for his wedding. Lord Kubera credited money to Lord Venkateswara (a form of the god Vishnu) for his marriage with Padmavathi.  Together, Srinivasa and Padmavathi lived for all eternity while Goddess Lakshmi, understanding the commitments of Lord Vishnu, chose to live in his heart forever.  In remembrance of this, devotees go to Tirupati to donate money in Venkateswara's hundi (donation pot) so that he can pay it back to Kubera. The hundi collections go as high as 22.5 million INR a day.  Devotees offer gold as a token of their love for God.

However, there are very strict rules that need to be followed while visiting the temple. Hoardings with these regulations can be found all around Tirupati.

Tirupati is located in India’s Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It is seen as a holy city for those practicing Hinduism, which causes the state to experience a high amount of pilgrimage traffic. Planning a trip to this sacred and holy state can seem overwhelming, but by planning your itinerary, selecting your transportation and lodging, and properly preparing to travel, you can make your trip to Tirupati a stress-free adventure that you will always remember.

Planning Your Itinerary

Step 1 Decide the best time of year to take your trip.

  • Tirupati experiences very hot and humid temperatures throughout their summers, the worst months being April and May. Visitors tend to avoid the extreme heat and humidity, which also means that the city is less crowded during this time.

Step 2 Plan on visiting temples and architectural sites in Tirupati.

  • Always research the temples you want to visit ahead of time, as many of them are still being used for religious practices and may have strict rules.
  • Some of the temples in Tirupati can see up to 60,000 pilgrims a day, so make sure you allow yourself adequate time to book visits in advance.

Step 3 Explore festivals and other events to experience India’s rich culture.

  • Keep in mind that while these events are going on, there will be more natives and tourists flooding the city. If you aren’t a fan of crowds, then you may want to plan your trip around these events.
  • If you are planning your trip to attend a specific event make sure to secure your lodging ahead of time to avoid any interruptions in your travel.

Step 4 Enjoy the local cuisine to experience all of India’s specialties.

  • Some Indian cuisines you should try while in Tirupati are, Idli and Dosa, Uttapam and Vada, and Chettinad cuisine.
  • Tirupati offers a variety of foods including vegetarian cuisines. Research the most recommended restaurants near where you will be staying to ensure you have the opportunity to taste all Tirupati has to offer.

Selecting Transportation and Lodging

Step 1 Plan your flight to Tirupati if you’re traveling from far away.

  • Prior to booking your flight, look for any fees regarding checking luggage. Many international airlines will charge additional fees for baggage.

Step 2 Travel to Tirupati by train if you’re coming from another part of Asia.

  • If you are coming from another country you will need to find a railway that connects your area to a major city in India to get to Tirupati.

Step 3 Book a guesthouse or hotel at least 1-2 months in advance.

  • Whether you are staying in a hotel or a guesthouse make sure that you look at reviews before booking. The pictures may look great online, but they might not be an accurate representation of where you will be staying.

Step 4 Determine the way you will get to your destinations in Tirupati.

  • If you are planning to rent a car in Tirupati, your current Driver’s License may not be valid to drive in India. Always check the rules and regulations regarding international drivers prior to your trip.
  • To find out more information on India’s international driving regulations visit https://www.internations.org/india-expats/guide/driving-in-india-15620/foreign-drivers-in-india-legal-aspects-2

Preparing to Travel

Step 1 Understand the monetary conversion for India before traveling.

  • Avoid going to conversion centers at airports or in major cities. They tend to have higher fees than going to an ATM or a bank.
  • Always keep local cash on hand. Many transportation services such as trains and buses will not accept credit cards.
  • Check https://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/ for exchange rates before you go.

Step 2 Make sure your passport is valid for 6 months after your arrival date in India.

  • If you are applying for your first passport or renewing your passport allow at least 6 weeks for your application to be processed. You can pay for expedited processing to receive your passport in 2 to 3 weeks. [11] X Research source
  • India also requires that your passport has at least two blank pages.
  • Always bring copies of your passport with you. If your passport is lost or gets stolen, having copies can help you replace your passport and be granted an exit visa.

Step 3 Obtain a valid Indian Visa before entering the country.

  • If you are visiting India with the intent to stay longer than 180 days, you must register your visit 2 weeks prior to your entry into the country. You need to register through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office at the closest location to where you will be staying. Also, make sure that you have obtained the appropriate visa before entering India. [13] X Research source
  • The electronic travel authorization must be applied for at least 4 days prior to when you plan to enter the country. To apply for a Visa visit https://indianfrro.gov.in/frro/menufrro.jsp?t4g=C9NLQKZ3 .
  • If you are a US citizen with Pakistani origin or decent, you may be subject to undergo administrative processing. This may also delay the time it takes when applying for an Indian visa. [14] X Research source

Step 4 Have all of your medical information and insurance on hand.

  • If you are traveling from an area that has yellow fever, you are required to carry and present documentation that you have been vaccinated against yellow fever. If you do not present proof of your vaccination, you may be immediately deported or placed in a yellow fever quarantine detention center for 6 days. [16] X Research source
  • If you are traveling with prescription medication, check to make sure the medication is legal in India prior to your arrival. Also, keep any medications in their original containers along with the prescription from your doctor. [17] X Research source
  • Be aware that programs such as U.S. Medicare will not cover any medical expenses while you are overseas.

Step 5 Register with your country’s embassy to stay safe during an emergency.

  • You can also check your government’s website to see if they have issued any travel warnings or temporary advisories that may affect your safety while abroad.
  • India is experiencing higher crime rates where foreigners may be targets. By being registered with your embassy they will be able to help you in the event you are the victim of a crime.

Step 6 Get guidebooks and maps before you travel if you are unfamiliar with the area.

  • Guidebooks will also usually have enough information for the places you visit so you won’t have to purchase pamphlets at each site you go to.
