1. buluan island.

Buluan Island is one of the protected tourist spots in Ipil, Zamboanga. The local authorities declared the surrounding water bodies as a Marine Protected Sanctuary.

A wide array of marine species can be found, making the site an ideal destination for snorkeling and diving. Surely, you can’t help but be amazed by the surrounding crystal-clear waters.

2. Dalisay Falls

3. Mount Kipit

4. Tagbilat Falls/Malagandis Falls

Also known as Malagandis Falls, Tagbilat Falls is the grandest falls in the province with its multiple layers of stunning cascades. It looks like a huge curtain cascading mists that will blow you away.

Lush forests surround the waterfall, adding to the rustic view. It’s one of the emerging Zamboanga Sibugay tourist spots.

5. Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands

6. Molboal Cave

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY: travel guide

Many Filipinos still are not aware of the province of Zamboanga Sibugay. Relatively, the province was officially carved out from Zamboanga del Sur just last 2001, the 79th of the 81 provinces of the Philippines . Moreso, its tourist destinations dotting the new province proves promising. From waterfalls to pristine beaches, Zamboanga Sibugay has many destinations to offer to all categories of tourists.

Last December 2016, I was able to visit the Zamboanga Peninsula, a landmass jutting out from Mindanao main island, forming the landmass that is now Zamboanga City to Misamis Occidental. In between are Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte. Favored by a more rainy climate, Zamboanga Sibugay is also a best place to cultivate rubber trees. It also has a mountainous core and vast coastline that features many beach resorts and beautiful islands. We just passed by this province on our way to Pagadian and Tangub City, hence, my indelible interest to explore Zamboanga Sibugay lingers until I was able to book a flight with Philippine Airlines from Manila to Dipolog after a couple of years. I was able to solo travel last May 2018 and here are the destinations I was able to visit.

MALANGAS Island Hopping

Malangas is one of the coastal municipalities of the province located at its southwestern flank. Facing the smaller Dumangquilas Bay, the town is endowed with a smaller group of islands featuring white-sand beaches. Malangas offers an island-hopping activity that you can enjoy for a day. Luckily I knew a local, Ms. Jonna Balagon , a dedicated educator, and she was able to arrange a boat day tour in her beloved Malangas.

Arriving at night from Ipil, the capital of the province, I stayed in La Dicha Lodge , where I also had my late dinner in their in-house cafeteria. My room in La Dicha lodge offers basic amenities that are ok for me. I had a huge mattress, a clean bathroom and since it was raining that night, I do not need to turn on the AC unit. I slept peacefully with the calming sound of rain.

I checked out early and transferred to Ms. Joanna’s home where she had me finish a hearty breakfast. I met her dear mom, Ms. Julie Balagon, and her sister too. They joined us in the island hopping. We left their homebound to the where our assigned boat is docked. Chartered a motorcycle, we arrived on a stony beach and a white outrigger boat is waiting for us there. Momentarily, the engine roared alive and we are on our way. In less than an hour, we will reach our first destination.

We visited Muyong Island – privately owned, however, they allowed tourists to visit. We are welcomed by a long stretch of cream-colored sandy beach. Dry white corals also litter the beach. There are huts that we can use. That day, we are the sole visitors on the island.

We moved to Nipa Nipa Island before noontime. This island features a more fine and whiter beach. I liked it better here. We arrived there with a family already occupying the other side of the beach. They are already enjoying their meals together while sheltered under the trees. I immediately frolicked around and dipped on its cool and clear waters. Rain clouds start to form afar and we hurried to the next destination.

In less than 20 minutes we arrived in Kigay Sandbar , however, it was high tide. The stilted structures seem to float above the inundated sandbar. We jumped out of the boat and swam to reach the sandbar. It was roughly waist-deep however, I can feel the finer sand on my submerged feet. We explored the floating structure and took pictures from there. Its roof deck is flooded with rainwater. I tried my snorkel equipment here and have seen many camouflaged fishes, crustaceans, and starfishes.  Warned by the looming rain, we hurried back to the mainland.

After preparing my departure, I sadly bade goodbye to Joanna’s family. Before I finally leave the town, She escorted me in their Municipal Hall and was able to meet Hon. Tata Baquiat – their supportive mayor. It was another unforgettable experience and an honor to exchange thoughts and ideas with Mayor Tata. Finally, I was on a chartered motorcycle and sped off to the Diplahan terminal. I am thankful to Ms. Jonna as she is the one who arranged my tour in their lovely place. I am wishing to be back and experience the laid back vibes there.

Travel Guide to Malangas. 

Ports of Entry: Pagadian, Zamboanga City or Dipolog. From these airports, charter tricycles to their central terminals and take Ipil bound bus. From Pagadian, alight at Diplahan junction. From Zamboanga and Dipolog, take Pagadian bound vehicles and alight in Diplahan junction. From Diplahan, you can charter a motorcycle or tricycle to Malangas.

TAGBILAT FALLS.

From Diplahan, I took the two-hour bus ride back to Ipil. Arriving at their central terminal, I walked to my next accommodation, Casa Mea Hotel . It is located near the Ipil Rotunda Obelisk. After checking in, I rested a bit, took a bath, and prepared myself to explore the night scene in Ipil. I chose an AC Double Room with private T&B. Room amenities include a TV set, dresser, telephone, hot shower, two towels, and coffee/tea set.

With the recommendation from Mr. UJ Almocera , one of the established bloggers in the region, I found myself in front of Mi Jardin – a buffet restaurant. After scanning the dishes, I confirmed my seat and enjoyed my heavy dinner, then continued to explore the town on foot. I noticed a lot of outdoor balut kiosks, where vendors would set up modest tables and chairs at nightfall. This is not typical of where I reside.

The following day, I met my driver bound for Titay. After driving for about an hour, we arrived at the Titay Public Market and changed the motorcycle since we will be passing winding roads to Tagbilat Falls. Luckily, he knew as well the trail and he was able to guide me to the catchbasin of the falls. The trek took me less than half an hour, and the momentarily, the view of the curtain waterfall emerged in between thick bamboo clusters. The Tagbilat Falls or Malagandis Falls features a wider cascade that is actually larger than its height. The roaring side and burst of wind emanating from the basin were therapeutic for me. I immediately ran to its catchbasin and balanced over exposed rocks to get a better vantage point of the waterfalls. I chose not to bathe into and spent some time exchanging stories with my tour guide over a makeshift bench placed under the shade of swaying tall bamboos.

Travel Guide to Tagbilat/Malagandis Falls: 

Ports of Entry: From Zamboanga and Pagadian, take Dipolog bound bus and alight in Titay Public Market. From Dipolog, take Zamboanga or Ipil bound bus and alight in Titay Public Market. You can charter a motorcycle and tricycle leading to the trail to the waterfalls.

BULUAN ISLAND

This island is one of the poster images of Zamboanga Sibugay’s tourism aspect. Featuring a teeming marine ecosystem coupled with hilly island core and creamy white sand beach, this island is a destination for both locals and tourists. The jump-off point is located in Barangay Buluan, about 15-20 minutes’ drive from Ipil proper. Initially, I was able to visit the island with the Ipil Municipal Hall staff. I got invited since one of them will be celebrating his birthday on the beautiful island. Arriving at the port, we approached our assigned boat via a long stilted footpath. The waters below appeared to be murky due to its muddy soil. On my second visit, we got on our assigned boat on a low tide, and we need to wade the shallow waters and muddy bed that swallows our feet ankle-deep, it is best this time to remove any footwear. The boat ride would last from 15-20 minutes depending on sea conditions. We arrived on a busy weekend and the island is already teeming with visitors. After securing our rented hut, I immediately went around the public area. One of the staff has shared a bit of the grim history of the island. He showed me a mound topped with stones believed to be a burial site of the rebels who occupied the island decades ago.

On its western side, you can try to snorkel and see the coral reefs on its shallow parts. I have tried to free dive here however the current proves daunting. I joined the team with their hearty lunch. I am so thankful to them inviting me and I enjoyed Buluan Island for free.

Travel Guide to Buluan Island: 

Ports of Entry: Pagadian, Zamboanga or Dipolog. From Pagadian, take Zamboanga bound bus and alight in Buluan junction. From Zamboanga, take Ipil bus and alight in Buluan junction. From Dipolog, take Zamboanga bound bus and alight in Buluan junction. You can charter a tricycle and motorcycle to bring you to the port area. There are no public transport in this area and you may keep your driver’s  contact number to bring you back to the highway.

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY CAPITOL COMPLEX

This is one of the elegant and stunning capitol buildings I have visited. The capitol complex is located on a hilly portion of the provincial capital where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the town. Its unique architectural features differ from the commonly greek inspired facades. The facade features three colors – yellow, blue, and maroon. The roof has a dominant conical structure in the middle, and the visible columns feature an ethnic style support structure jutting out that speaks of the province’s cultural background.

When I entered the building, I was awed by its spacious and high ceilinged open-air hall with a built stage. My favorite part of the capitol complex is the balcony at the other building where you can view downtown. Travel Guide to Zamboanga Sibugay Capitol Complex:

Ports of Entry: Pagadian, Zamboanga and Dipolog, take Ipil bound bus. Once at Ipil, you can charter a tricycle to bring you to the capitol complex.

IPIL ROTUNDA OBELISK

Ipil is a crossroads to Zamboanga, Dipolog, and Pagadian. Exploring the Zamboanga Peninsula would definitely lead you to this recognizable obelisk. It is erected on a traffic roundabout, surrounded by commercial establishments, and was inaugurated last 2015. The obelisk is embellished with baybayin script characters that spell the name of the province.

Despite being a new province, the existing natural wonders of Zamboanga Sibugay are waiting for more visitors to see and experience. From the major thoroughfares of Ipil, I can see mountains that could be future mountain climbing destinations, many view decks and more waterfalls and beaches to open. The province has a promising future in terms of tourism since there are many islands that can be explored and developed. I am thankful for the locals who assisted and helped me in visiting their beloved province, and that yearning to return still linger until this day.

Ang ganda ng mga falls! Would you recommend Zamboanga Sibugay as one of the safest provinces for solo travelers? My former officemate lived there when she was a kid, but haven’t visited again (or di ko lang alam haha) since she went to Manila for college. I got the idea of going there but I can’t find anyone who would join me. Kaines. 😦

I live within Zamboanga Peninsula and I can attest talaga on its beauty. I have visited some of its tourist destinations though and I think mas madaming hidden paradise yung Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur compared dito samin sa Norte.

Tagbilat/Malagandis Falls is such a beautiful creation!! Ang dami din palang magagandang island sa Zamboanga specially Muyong Island. I want to see the long stretch of cream-colored sandy beach in person! 🙂

I forgot the exact story behind the architectural design of the capitol building, all I can recall is me staring as if stunned onto its facade

The lodge you stayed in is very homey. It reminds me of our house sa Leyte. Falling asleep from the fresh air and cool breeze and waking up at a beautiful sunrise and the crow of roosters in the morning. Aaaaaa 💗 The destinations are all beautiful as well ✨

I heard so many good things about Zamboanga Sibugay,one of them is Buluan Island. A friend described it as “beautiful, pristine & relaxing” and I couldn’t agree more! Tagbilat Falls looks majestic too though the name’s kind of cheeky! I’m hoping to tick this off my list as soon as it’s okay to travel already! 😁

I really like the ambiance when it rains. Anyways, super dami napuntahan sa Zamboanga Sibugay. One which caught my attention was the Tagbilat Falls, it feels like I can hear the streaming down of the running water. ❤ And napansin ko sa kapitolyo nila kakaiba yung architectural design. Astig.

I’ve been to Zamboanga to visit the Pink Beach last year. I’ve also heard of Once Islas but I didn’t have the chance to visit it due to time constraints. It’s my first time to read/hear about Zamboanga Sibugay. The beach seems peaceful and not commercialized just like Pink Beach. I guess beaches in Zamboanga have that common characteristic? Love the photos of the waterfalls btw.

I also have a thing for small, tiny lodges that you’d feel more at home. The place you stayed is absolutely worthy to check out.

I have friends from Zamboanga but they never mention anything about those places you mentioned on your blog. I guess they are not well-traveled people. I really appreciate places like this. Grabe naman yung Tagbilat Falls! Sobrang scenic. We used to have waterfalls at Alfonso, Cavite but nasira siya because of the people and now more and more rivers die because of Camella. 😦

Ultimate Guide to Zamboanga Sibugay

Since its founding in 2001, Zamboanga Sibugay has been steadily developing into a tourist destination. It is home to natural wonders, distinct landmarks, and other hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Those who seek something new and fresh will enjoy the sights and experiences that this young province has to offer. Make the most out of your visit to Zamboanga Sibugay through this guide:

Day 1: Mainland Attractions

Begin your journey at Ipil, the capital of Zamboanga Sibugay. There are several hotel options within the city, such as the Casa Mea Hotel & Restaurant . 

At Casa Mea, Standard Rooms (twin bed) and Single Deluxe Rooms will cost Php800, while a Deluxe Room is at Php1,000. For bigger groups, the Double Deluxe Room and Barkadahan Rooms are priced at Php1,250, while the Family Room costs Php1,500.

Town Sights

Once you are settled, make sure to take photos of the 10-story Rotunda Obelisk—a prominent landmark within Ipil. It is a monument that serves as a reminder of the lives that were lost in past skirmishes in the area. On the sides of the obelisk, the name of the province is written in baybayin , an ancient writing system native to the Philippines. 

You can also visit the nearby Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Capitol to appreciate its distinct architecture. It is palace-like in structure and decked in many colors. 

The provincial capitol’s design is inspired by Subanen and Muslim cultural aesthetics. As the provincial capitol is built on a hill, the area is also a good spot for sightseeing. 

Outdoor Dining at Stonehill Farms

Ten to 15 minutes south of Ipil is Stonehill Farms, a 10-hectare hilltop property along the coast of Zamboanga Sibugay. 

Stonehill Farms offers traditional Zamboangueño dishes and delicacies, and Filipino classics like lechon and pancit. 

Guests may dine al fresco and enjoy the outdoor views: expansive fields, forests, Sibuguey Bay, and Buluan Island on the horizon. Cottages are also available for overnight stays.

Stonehill Farms has an entrance fee of Php30 for adults and Php 20 for children. The camping fee, inclusive of entrance fees, is ar Php200. 

There are also bahay kubo rentals ranging from Php1,200 to 2,000, depending on its capacity. Tent rentals, depending on the size, will cost Php300 to 1,000. 

Specialties like lechon baboy are at Php 460/kilo, while the special Stonehill Fried Chicken costs Php550. Other meals and snacks may be checked via this link .

Day 2: Falling for Zamboanga Sibugay

The waterfalls of Zamboanga Sibugay are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. It is possible to visit a few of them in one go. But you can choose to visit other destinations other than the falls within the day to add variety in your trips. 

Tagbilat Falls/ Malagandis Falls

The municipality of Titay is a 30- to 40-minute drive northeast of Ipil. At the heart of it is the Tagbilat (or Malagandis) Falls.. 

With a curtain-like appearance and a deep-green water basin, it is popular among the residents of Zamboanga Sibugay. 

From Titay, Tagbilat Falls / Malagandis Falls is a one-hour habal-habal ride away from the municipality. Most tourists have paid around Php500 for the ride, good for two people. Upon reaching the drop-off point, guests have to walk a few more meters before reaching the falls. 

Dalisay Falls

Also within Titay is Brgy. Dalisay, which is a shorter drive from Ipil at just over 20 minutes. It is located northwest of the city. 

Within the barangay is Dalisay Falls, which has one tier and four waterfall curtains. Its cool basin allows for swimming, but the rapids challenge those who wish to go near the cascading waters. 

After you’ve refreshed yourself in these waterfalls, return to your chosen hotel at Ipil and prepare for another nature-filled experience. 

Day 3: Rare and Seasonal Sightings at Kabug

East of the capital city is the Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands, a temporary haven for the world’s migratory birds. Located within the municipality of Siay, Kabug is a 30-minute drive away from Ipil.

In 2018, Siay hosted the first World Migratory Bird Day in the Philippines. Part of the celebrations back then was a tour of the wetlands, including bird watching and cultural performances. 

Currently, these activities are part of the tour packages available for tourists. 

The bird watching tour lasts for five hours (10:00AM to 3:00PM), while the bat watching activities run for either four (3:00PM-7:00PM) or five hours (10:00AM-3:00PM). The eco-cultural tour, which takes four hours, is held from 1:00PM to 5:00PM. 

The packages vary in price based on the number of people: Php2,300 (4 pax), Php2,830 (6 pax), Php3,360 (8 pax), and Php 3,890 (10 pax). 

Optional tour activities include calamansi picking (Php150 entrance fee), calamansi food product processing, and kayaking (Php50 to 70 per hour).

After a day of birdwatching and sightseeing, head back to your hotel in Ipil and get ready to spend a day on a remote island tomorrow. 

Days 4 and 5: Camping at Buluan Island

Zamboanga Sibugay allows you to experience what it’s like to live on a remote island with organized camping activities. 

A nearby location is Buluan Island, which can be seen from high points in the mainland like Stonehill Farms. Located seven kilometers off the coast of Ipil, the island has white sand beaches and clear waters. 

There are no resorts or restaurants on the island. Instead, guests are encouraged to bring their own food, drinks, and camping materials. 

The waters are also clear enough for snorkeling. Cottages and benches are also available for guests to use. 

Visits to the island are coordinated with the Zamboanga Sibugay tourism office. A rough rundow of fees are as follows: a round trip fare from Ipil to Brgy. Buluan (Php500); habal-habal within Brgy. Buluan to the port (Php100); and boat rides to the island and to the snorkeling sites (Php500). 

Gear rental rates on the island vary. Fuel costs for the boats may also be shouldered by visitors. 

After Buluan, you can return to your hotel and spend the rest of your day dining in the local restaurants. 

You can come full circle and eat at Stonehill Farms to enjoy classic Zamboanga fare before leaving the region.

Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay: Mindanao’s Next Top Eco-Tourism Site

Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay is the next top eco-tourism site not just in Mindanao but even in the Philippines.

I actually said, that. I said that pronouncement during the dinner party of the World Migratory Bird Day celebration with the town’s local officials after touring the rich mangroves and wetlands of Siay. The host called us, the bloggers, one by one to give our views about the experience of the tourism project.

That day, we explored the river and mangrove area of Siay. DENR personnel also joined us. They explained that it was not really the season of migratory birds, but luckily, we’ve spotted some. The activity lets us experience why Siay has become an integral part of the ecosystem – the home of migrating birds from 20 different countries which happens twice a year.

Siay’s MENRO office also shared that 37 out of 53 species documented in Siay are migratory birds.

World Migratory Bird Day in the Philippines

We traveled for about 3 hours from Zamboanga City to Siay, in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay. Local officials warmly welcomed us for the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. The event showcases the rich natural resources of Siay, as it plays a huge part in the migration of birds in 20 countries, which happens twice a year.

ASec. Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, the Regional Director of DOT Region 9 and also the Assistant Secretary of DOT for Mindanao and Palawan, was the guest of honor. The program was filled with important information about the migratory birds in Siay as well as some cultural dance performances and of course, good food.

The Mangrove Tour

After the program, it was time to experience what Siay is clearly becoming famous for – its rich nature and mangrove area. We hopped on a boat and traveled through the river surrounded by lush forest and mangroves.

The DENR team joined us on the boat. It was not the season for migratory birds but we’ve seen some.

At the center of the area, is a man-made structure perfect for relaxation. We didn’t get off the boat because we were running out of time. We still need to visit a small community beside the river.

In a matter of minutes, we arrived in the community area. There’s a special telescope there for us to check and see some group of bats. These creatures are huge, a sign that the area is well-protected. I tried to capture what I was seeing on the telescope. I hope in my own way, I was able to do it.

Note: I was with a friend who is a journalist from Brunei, that’s why I was spokening dollar in this video. LOL!

Dinner Party

It was already dark when we were back. Now that we’ve already experienced what Siay has to offer in terms of eco-tourism, it was time for some chill time and celebration. I really appreciate the hospitality of the staff and officials of the Siay LGU.

Mayor Jarvis Acosta of Siay even let us try its popular local wine, bakase . Man it was strong. I consumed one glass of it and I felt by heart and tummy were like burning. LOL!

We were surprised when the host called us, the bloggers, one by one to share our opinions and insights about Siay and what we’ve experienced. It was indeed a surprise. I told myself after I was called, Oh my, what am I gonna say?

But in those moments, you just have to trust the flow and let it go. I just shared what I felt at that time. My genuine appreciation for the local and Tourism Office’s efforts in sharing the beautiful natural resources of Siay.

I shared what I think as a traveler. What I felt as a traveler, and that is, the natural beauty of Siay is lit, legit. The team just has to continue what they have started, and it is only a matter of time that Siay will be known as the center of eco-tourism in Mindanao, and in the country.

Where is Zamboanga Sibugay?

A province located in the Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao. The capital of the province is Ipil , which is a one hour travel to Siay. Here’s the map of the province.

How to go to Zamboanga Sibugay?

There are airports around the Zamboanga Peninsula like Zamboanga City (110 km. away), Dipolog in Zamboanga Del Norte (180 km) and Pagadian in Zamboanga Del Sur (150) that can be an entry and exit point in going to Zamboanga Sibugay. Still, Zamboanga City is the most convenient way of going to Siay and in Zamboanga Sibugay.

From Zamboanga City, there are vans and bus that passes through Ipil. Usually, these are bound to Dipolog , Ozamis, Pagadian, etc.

Whenever we’re asked what our favorite local destinations are, we always include Zamboanga City in the list. And almost always, we get a one-word follow-up question delivered with a lot of curiosity — “Why?”

In my circle of friends, I can count with my fingers those who have set foot in this corner of Mindanao. But what’s in Zamboanga? Why should you visit? As one of the biggest urban hubs in the Philippines in terms of land area (and population), Zamboanga City is brimming with attractions that are worth going the distance.

Zamboanga City’s travel scene has been developing fast over the past few years. It is, after all, Region IX’s primary gateway. Tours are becoming more organized. Promotion of the city has been relentless, especially after travel restrictions have eased. Most tourists flock to the islands and the beaches, but the local food scene is steadily drawing in more visitors, too.

The team has been to Asia’s Latin City five times already, but each time we felt like there was still more to see and discover! On our most recent trip, AirAsia , which now flies daily to Zamboanga, toured us around the city and we got to visit some attractions for the first time!

If you’re curious about what awaits you there, here’s a full rundown of the things to do and places to visit in Zamboanga City.

SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS

Pink beach (sta. cruz grande island).

Off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula lies an island that, when kissed by the sun, glows with a natural rosy blush. Hailed by the National Geographic as one of the World’s 21 Best Beaches in 2017, Pink Beach is Zamboanga City’s most popular tourist attraction.

To manage your expectations, the pink hue isn’t vivid or bright. From afar, the sandy shore looks like the usual white beach, but the closer you get, the pink taint becomes more apparent. The sand’s pale pink tint is the result of the weathering of the red organ-pipe corals (tubipora musica) that were brought to the shore by the waves.

Punctuating the southeastern side of the peninsula, Zamboanga City’s Paseo del Mar is the main jump-off point to the island and its Pink Beach. Visitors can hire a tricycle from the city center to Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal in Paseo del Mar. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes.

Because the number of visitors is strictly regulated, you need to register in advance before going. Registration and boat service start at 7:00 AM. Overnight stay is not permitted and only day tours are allowed.

Boat fee is P1000, good for up to 10 passengers. If your group is smaller, you’ll still need to pay the same amount.

Mangroves Boat Tour (Sta. Cruz Grande Island)

While Grande Santa Cruz Island allures with its pink radiance, its beauty goes beyond appearances. It also keeps a trove of natural wonders. On the other side of the island is a lagoon fully adorned with mangroves, nourishing wildlife and promoting biodiversity.

The lagoon actually dominates the whole island, occupying most of the surface. The best way to explore it is to take a guided boat tour. As your boatman paddles, a guide will lead you to a number of spots to explain just how important it is to protect this site. You’ll learn about the types of mangroves and meet upside-down jellyfish . Don’t worry, they’re not dangerous at all. They’re virtually stingless. But please don’t get them out of the water.

To join a lagoon boat tour, tell the boatmen that brought you to Pink Beach that you want to explore the lagoon. They will take you to a small community near the entrance to the lagoon. This transfer will cost you an additional P200.

Here, you’ll be transferring to a smaller “yellow boat.” Rental of each yellow boat costs P300, good for 2 passengers. Any given boat will be accompanied by 2 paddlers, each from a different family. (It’s a way of making sure everyone in the community benefits from the program.)

Tour guide fee is P300. A tour guide can lead up to 5 boats max. You can team up with other boats so you could split the guide fee.

Important: you can only arrange a tour before 12 noon! They won’t be accepting any booking beyond that time. Please follow the rules and regulations when exploring. The Grande Santa Cruz Island, together with the smaller Little Santa Cruz Island, is a protected area.

Here’s a summary of the lagoon tour expense.

Vinta Rowing

The vinta is the traditional outrigger boat that is common in Mindanao, especially in the areas of southern Mindanao, Sulu archipelago, and the Zamboanga peninsula. It is famous for its vividly colorful rhombic sail, adding a splash of color to the waters of Sulu Sea.

The vinta plays an important role in the livelihood of the locals — economy, trade, and transportation. It is historically used as a fishing vessel. Today, it also serves as a mode of transportation for people, as a cargo vessel to deliver products/goods, and as a tourist attraction.

If you want to experience rowing or riding a vinta , you may charter one in any of the barangays along the city’s coastlines or you can do it when you visit Grande Santa Cruz Island.

Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar

Sitting northwest of Santa Cruz Grande Island, Little Santa Cruz Island is like a quick dash of paradise off the coast of the Zamboanga peninsula. The most recognizable feature of the island is the sandbar trailing on the easternmost point.

Although the island is fringed with fair sand, it is a mixture of fine and broken shells and corals. There are small lagoons, but tourists are not allowed to venture beyond sandbar. The surrounding waters are mostly deep, sea-grass-covered, and are not recommended for leisure swimming.

Visitors are only allowed to stay here for 10 minutes. But if you really want to make a stop here, a detour will cost you an additional P200.

ONCE ISLAS CRUISE (11 Islands)

A steadily rising tourist attraction is Once Islas (11 Islands), a string of islands and islets off the eastern coast of Zamboanga City. Not all islands are open to the public, but those that are accessible are great for swimming, sunbathing, and further exploring. There are designated snorkeling spots for those who want to take a peek into the underwater scene. Buh-Buh, Bisaya-Bisaya, Baung-Baung, and Sirommon are those that are accessible to the public.

The islands are only open for day trips. A limit of 200 visitors per day is implemented, so advance registration is required. You need to book online through [email protected] one week before your planned visit. Guidelines and steps will be emailed upon booking inquiry. Walk-ins are not entertained.

The jump off point is the Panubigan Ferry Terminal, roughly 1.5 hours from the city center.

Below are the accessible islands:

Bisaya-Bisaya Island

Bisaya-Bisaya Island is a two-faced island, with steep cliffs on one side but blanketed with fine white sand on the other. Its northern face is where you’ll find the sandy stretch, fringed with palm trees. From above, the beach area resembles a boomerang on patch of grass. In between the trees are a few huts where you could stay and enjoy coconut juice, which is for sale on site.

Not too far away is a smaller islet often dubbed a child of Bisaya-Bisaya. This one’s generally more rocky and jagged. It features a small natural pool that gets filled by the waves at high tide.

Our guide Sirna shared with us a folk tale about two fishermen, a Christian and a Muslim, who once stumbled upon the island that blessed them with fish. But the two did not agree on how they would divide the ocean bounty — since one of them caught much more than the other — so they decided to go their own way. According to our guide, “bisaya-bisaya” is the local term for “kanya-kanya” or not sharing.

Baung-Baung Island

Baung-Baung Island is an almost rectangular island whose southwestern end shimmers with its fine white sand. It’s usually the stop right after Bisaya-Bisaya because of its proximity to it. In fact, Baung-Baung has a trekking trail that will lead you to a viewpoint that affords a majestic view of Bisaya-Bisaya and the other islets around it. On Google Maps, it’s marked “Baong Island”.

Sirommon Island

Sirommon Island is the usual lunch stop for boat tours; thanks to its spacious huts. It also has a wide strip of white sand and a sand bar, which is probably why most tourists spend the most time here. It’s also a great snorkeling stop.

Buh-Buh Island

Buh-Buh Island is best known for its beachfront mosque. Pre-pandemic, tours would make a stop here, but we’re not sure whether or not it’s still the case. We didn’t set foot here, though.

ZAMBOANGA CITY HERITAGE TOUR

El museo de zamboanga.

El Museo de Zamboanga should be the first stop of any city tour. It offers a quick overview of the history and heritage of Zamboanga City, which explains much of what you’ll see as you visit more places through the day.

It has two galleries — the main gallery, housing the permanent exhibition, and another one for the temporary or seasonal exhibits. It showcases historical items and artifacts that narrate the colorful story of the region, its people, and its rich culture from the pre-colonial period to the more recent decades. The museum is nestled in the extensive Pasonanca Park.

Pasonanca Park & Scout Limbaga Campsite

Opened to the public in the 1910s, the Pasonanca Park is another green space for nature lovers and those who want to have a quick escape from the much busier city center. It houses the Camp Limbaga (Scout Limbaga Campsite) with a convention center, an amphitheater, an aviary, a floral garden and butterfly sanctuary, and public swimming pools — a kiddie pool, a natural pool, and an Olympic-size pool.

Probably the most famous attraction is the Pasonanca Treehouse. Constructed in 1960, it was originally built to serve as the Youth Citizenship Training Center. Today, visitors come here to take photos, but if you want to spend more time here, you can rent the treehouse too! Make sure to contact the LGU’s admin first to coordinate. You can buy food along the way from the sidestreet restaurants, stores, and BBQ stands.

Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule might change without prior notice, so check first before going. Admission Fee: FREE. The park itself is free, but the attractions impose their own entrance fees, usually ranging from P10 to P25 per head.

Climaco Freedom Park

Formerly known as Abong-Abong Park, the Climaco Freedom Park is situated about seven kilometers north of the city center. Named after the late Zamboanga City Mayor Cesar Climaco, a local hero who was assassinated in 1984. The park also serves as his final resting place.

The freedom park is a popular weekend destination for the locals and one of the rising tourist spots, attracting nature lovers of all ages. It encompasses a garden, Chrislam Pool, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts campsite, Heroes Hill, and the Holy Hill, which is the endpoint of the Station of the Cross trek.

Some of the things to do here are swimming, hiking, trekking, biking, having a picnic, and going on a religious pilgrimage and retreat.

Fort Pilar Shrine and Museum

Also called Fortaleza del Pilar , Fort Pilar dates back to the 17th century, originally serving as a Spanish military defense post. Fast forward to the present, this bastioned fort is a major historical landmark of the city. Recognized as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973, the fort underwent restorations and is regularly maintained by the city.

It cradles an open-air 18th-century Marian shrine — Our Lady of the Pillar — with an altar and stone seating for the devotees who want to pray and reflect. On Sundays, monoblock chairs dot the area for the regular mass.

The fort also houses a regional branch of the National Museum of the Philippines, the bells of the Sanctuary to the Lady of the Pillar, and a fountain. The fort is located near Paseo del Mar and Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

Tucked within the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology , just a stone’s throw from Fort Pilar and Paseo del Mar, the bird sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers, particularly bird watchers.

The vast mangrove-fringed pond is a protected area, where great white egrets breed and thrive. Other migratory birds also frequent the site.

Two designated view decks are accessible for those who want to spend some time here. The best time for birdwatching is early morning or late afternoon, while the best months are November to March.

Paseo del Mar

Just across Fort Pilar is Paseo del Mar , a waterfront recreational park facing the Basilan Strait. Aside from the souvenir shops, local food vendors, and eateries, the newly renovated park added a children’s playground and a skatepark, making it a favorite hang-out place for the locals.

It caters not just to families, friends, and couples but also to those who want to spend their alone time or me-time. Several tables and chairs are arranged for those who like to go food tripping here. Local dishes, snacks, and street fare are available. Benches also line the boardwalk, where sunset revelers lounge to watch the sunlight paints the sky with a beautiful gradient of colors as the day turns into night.

Canelar Barter Trade Center

OK, first things first, despite the name, you need cash when shopping here so please put down whatever it is you plan to trade. 🤣 The name is a nod to the trading system of exchanging goods that was widely practiced in this part of the world back in the day.

Today, however, it functions just like any other shopping center. Time to brush up on your haggling skills when you dive into this shopping paradise, tempting you with its cheap imported offerings from the neighboring countries Indonesia and Malaysia.

Alongside local products, a wide array of imported goods are sold here — souvenirs, food, clothes, fabrics, gadgets, accessories, among others. Get a hold of your favorite Malaysian or Indonesian chocolates, coffee brands (Old Town Cofee and others), and milk tea (teh tarik) at relatively cheaper prices. Lastly, don’t forget to pause and breathe. Good? Okay. Let the second wave of haggling and negotiating begin!

Zamboanga City Hall

Smack at the very heart of the city center, where well-preserved colonial structures are clustered, the Zamboanga City Hall is considered one of the important heritage sites in the city.

Recognized as a National Historical Site, it was originally used as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the then Moro Province. Later on, it became the government seat of the former Zamboanga Province. It has been serving as the administrative seat of Zamboanga City since 1937. Rizal Park or Plaza Rizal is just across the city hall.

Yakan Weaving Village

While in Zamboanga City, don’t pass up the opportunity to take home the best tangible souvenirs you can buy — products made from the exquisite Yakan fabric, which takes time to finish, depending on the intricacy of the designs and patterns. The Yakan are the traditional inhabitants of Basilan and other areas in this part of Mindanao.

Here in Zamboanga City, you’ll find the Yakan Weaving Village , which harbors local shops selling traditional products and practical accessories including bags, purses, pencil cases, and even yards of Yakan fabrics. You can also watch (or try for yourself!) the traditional process of Yakan weaving.

ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP

Curacha (spanner crabs).

Nope. We are not talking about the Filipino femme fatale movie character played by Rossana Roces nor actual cockroaches! Curacha means cockroach in the Chavacano language, but — before you lose your appetite — we’re not asking you to go full Fear Factor here. Instead, we’re inviting you to have a taste of the most mouth-watering crustaceans that Zamboanga has to offer — spanner crabs! (It got its name because of its spiky appearance.)

So what is it exactly? We are talking about Zamboanga’s gastronomic gem. Curacha looks like the love child of a huge crab and a hairy lobster. Known for its consistent red appearance, whether raw or cooked, it is sought after because it’s meatier than other crabs and packs more flavor. Thankfully, they thrive in the bosom of the Sulu Sea.

Your trip won’t be complete without trying a dish or two. Alavar’s Seafood Restaurant is famous for its curacha dish cooked in its equally popular specialty sauce.

If you want to take some home, head over to Aderes Flea Market in Guiwan, where you can purchase fresh fresh, uncooked curacha at a lower price. Lobsters are also available!

Moro Cuisine

The Filipino Muslims, also known as the Moros, take pride in their distinct cuisine. Although sharing some similarities with other parts of the country in terms of seasonings and ingredients like garlic, onions, and ginger, what make Moro cuisine different are other spices like turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime — which are more commonly used by our ASEAN neighbors. It also utilizes burnt or blackened coconut meat in some dishes.

Some of the Moro faves are beef randang, piaparan, bakas, chicken pyanggang, pater, dodol, and lukatis. If you want to sample several dishes in one sitting, the latal is your best choice. It is a platter of some native dishes of the region.

Both Bay Tal Mal (at SM Mindpro) and Dennis Coffee Garden (near the airport) have latal on their menu.

Knickerbocker

After a sumptuous native Moro food fest, end it “sweetly” with a tall serving of Zamboanga’s iconic dessert — the knickerbocker.

A what? A hybrid of fruit salad and halo-halo, Zamboanga’s knickerbocker usually combines slices of fruits, gelatin, and shaved ice. It is then doused in milk and topped with a scoop of ice cream.

The Palmeras , also known as Hacienda de Palmeras , is said to be the home of the original knickerbocker and is credited for inventing this refreshing dessert.

Satti and Street Food

Of course! Any TPT trip isn’t complete without delving into the street food scene! These everyday accessible munchies tell a lot about the place, its people, and its culture. You can find street food anywhere, especially in busy areas like the public market and around the city hall.

Paseo del Mar has its share of street grubs and snacks. R.T. Lim Boulevard also hosts a number of street food peddlers. Some of the streetfood choices are satay or “ihaw-ihaw”, pastil, sicalang, and lokot-lokot. But our favorite is mi goreng!

But perhaps the most iconic of all is satti , a breakfast favorite among locals. Satti is usually skewered beef or chicken, grilled and then served half-dipped in a bowl of spicy sauce with rice shaped into cubes!

When we asked the locals where to find the best satti in the city, all fingers pointed at Jimmy’s Satti . Unfortunately, we weren’t able to try it, but we had our helping from Dennis Coffee Garden, which also serves satti.

OTHER WORTHY ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

Zamboanga hermosa festival.

The city’s annual celebration of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is dedicated to its patron saint La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar . It’s a month-long festivity that takes place in October; the first two weeks of which are usually packed with activities, peaking in the second week, particularly on the feast day of the patron saint, which is on the 12th day of October.

One of the main events is the Regatta de Zamboanga , a vinta race participated by hundreds of vinta owners and operators. All the participants are residents of Zamboanga.

Taluksangay Mosque

If you trace the roots of Islam in Zamboanga, they will most likely lead you to the coastal village of Taluksangay on the southeast coast of the city. Here, just next to the barangay hall, stands a historic mosque. It is believed that it is here that Islam began to spread in the peninsula.

Constructed in 1885 by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno, the Taluksangay Mosque is said to be the oldest in Western Mindanao and the first in Zamboanga Peninsula. The mosque’s most recognizable features are the two minarets.

This off-route destination is mostly visited by Muslims and history buffs.

Location: Taluksungay Mosque, Barangay Taluksungay, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: Visitors can enter the mosque anytime EXCEPT during prayer times, which happen five times a day. It’s best to drop by the barangay hall, which is located just beside the mosque. Please observe visiting rules and protocols.

Merloquet Falls

Located about two hours away from the city center, near the boundary with Zamboanga Sibugay in the north and Zamboanga del Norte in the west, the magnificent two-tiered Merloquet Falls is regarded as one of the most beautiful not only in the region but in the country. The most photographed is the wide terraced drop, creating magical, intricate textured cascades instead of just a smooth straight drop.

The path leading to the falls is quite developed with concrete roads and a designated parking area for vehicles. On foot, the trek to the falls entails many cemented pathways and steps. Nonetheless, this may still be quite difficult for those who are physically challenged.

There are several swimming areas, but mind your steps because some parts are slippery. The best time to visit is in the wet/rainy season.

Learn Chavacano

Zamboanga is often called Asia’s Latin City because of the heavy Hispanic influences. And it’s most apparent in its most dominant language — Chavacano (or Chabacano), the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It is like a combination of Spanish and local languages, and it’s quite fascinating!

Why not learn Chavacano while in Zamboanga? Start from the basics such as greetings and useful phrases that you can use while in the city. It is also a good way to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture.
