One of the many new Netflix sports docu-series to debut in 2023 has been handed a season 2 order. Tour de France: Unchained will return for a second season in 2024.

Debuting on Netflix for the first time in early June 2023, Tour de France: Unchained gives you unparalleled access to behind-the-scenes of the world’s most famous cycling race. The documentary series was released in French audio with a range of subtitle and dub options, including English.

Eight episodes dropped globally (after airing on France Télévisions) on June 9th. The series featured  in the global non-English TV top 10 for a single week, picking up 8.2 million hours watched globally between June 11th and 18th.

The renewal news comes via a Tweet by Netflix France . The Tour de France followed up Netflix France’s announcement in an additional Tweet, saying :

“See you next year @NetflixFR! A series made possible thanks to @francetv and the cycling teams!”

Season 2 will follow the forthcoming 2023 Tour de France, scheduled to begin at the end of July 2023 . The event takes place over 21 stages beginning in Northern Spain and concluding in Paris; it’s been confirmed 22 teams will be competing for the grand prize.

The renewal of Tour de France: Unchained means that we’ll see the return of numerous sporting documentaries in 2023. Full Swing , Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Break Point have all been handed renewal orders, each set to return in 2024. All of the aforementioned shows (including Unchained) are produced by the British outfit Box to Box Films.

Those returning series are in addition to other various sports documentaries Netflix currently has in the works for other sports like soccer, the NFL, rugby, and WWE.

Are you glad to hear that Tour de France: Unchained is returning for a second season? Let us know in the comments.

Watch: Tour de France unveils new trailer for Netflix series, out 8 June

The new series, Tour de France: Unchained, will be launched alongside this year's Critérium du Dauphiné

The Tour de France peloton passes the Arch de Triomphe

A new, official trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary series Tour de France: Unchained was released online on Wednesday.

The highly-anticipated series, produced by Quadbox and Box to Box Films, the makers of F1: Drive to Survive, follows seven teams at the 2022 Tour de France , with exclusive behind-the-scenes access.

The name has now been confirmed as "Unchained"; previously, it was listed as "Untitled Tour de France Docuseries".

The eight-part series will be available to stream on Netflix on 8 June, coinciding with this year’s Critérium du Dauphiné , the key precursor to the Tour.

The new trailer, shared by the Tour de France and the participating teams, opens with an image of Tom Pidcock riding solo through the masses on Alpe D’Huez , where he claimed victory on stage 12 last year. It then continues, with dramatic music and voice overs, to sum up the concept of the Tour de France. “It’s the world’s toughest race,” one person says.

Also included in the one-minute video are snippets inside the team cars and buses, as well as on-bike footage and interviews with team managers. It is understood that eight teams agreed to give exclusive access to Netflix camera crews for the series: AG2R Citroën, Alpecin-Deceuninck, Bora-Hansgrohe, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma and Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

According to reports, Netflix covered the production costs of €8 million to make the series, paying a total of €1 million to the different parties involved, with teams ending up with about €62,000 each. The streaming platform is also working on a documentary about British road champion Mark Cavendish , who holds the record for the number of stage wins at the Tour de France, tied with Eddy Merckx on 34.

Earlier this year, a different trailer for the new Tour de France series emerged at the Mobile Live World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. It was twice as long as the latest one and incorporated footage from past editions, as well as from other races, namely Julian Alaphilippe’s crash at Strade Bianche last year.

The previous trailer, understood to be a working draft, used a different title for the series, ‘Tour de France: Au cœur du peloton’ (Inside the peloton). The official title of the English-language version has since been revealed as ‘Tour de France: Unchained’.

When the new docuseries was announced last March, Yann le Moënner, CEO of ASO, the organiser of the Tour de France, said: “We are proud of this partnership with Netflix, France Télévisions and the Tour de France teams, which will offer fans a unique immersion behind the scenes.

“Through a narrative approach, which is additive to the competition itself, the public will be able to discover how the Tour de France represents the ultimate challenge for the competitors ; in particular in terms of suffering, pushing their limits and team spirit. This project is part of our overall ambition to make our sport more accessible and meet an even wider audience.”

Netflix's 'Tour de France: Unchained' documentary coming on June 8

Eight-episode series delves behind the scenes at Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and six other teams at the 2022 Tour

Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar do battle on Peyragudes at the 2022 Tour de France

Netflix's Tour de France documentary, Tour de France: Unchained, is just hours away from release with the eight-episode series released on June 8.

The series will delve behind the scenes of last year's race just in time to whet appetites for a rematch between Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) this July.

While UAE didn't let Netflix's cameras into their team bus, Jumbo-Visma did, meaning viewers will get unprecedented access to their victorious campaign. Ineos Grenadiers, Groupama-FDJ, EF Education-EasyPost, Alpecin-Deceuninck, Bora-Hansgrohe, and AG2R Citroën will also feature with exclusive interviews, insight, and a new perspective on racing the Tour.

Between them, the eight teams directly involved in the series won 11 of the 21 stages at last year's race. Viewers will get an insight into Jasper Philipsen's pair of sprint victories, Tom Pidcock's daring Galibier descent , and Wout van Aert's triple triumph as well as Vingegaard's toppling of Pogačar in the high mountains.

Netflix Tour de France documentary trailer reveals drama of 2022 race The subtle presence of Netflix at the 2022 Tour de France The complete guide to the 2023 Tour de France 2023 Tour de France route

Earlier this year, Cyclingnews obtained the official trailer after it was shown at the Mobile Live World Congress in Barcelona. At the end of April, the first trailer was officially released, showing brief highlights from the eight episodes.

Included in the trailer is Groupama-FDJ boss Marc Madiot telling his riders, "You are soldiers, you are warriors. When you pull on a jersey, you become another person."

Highlights of Pidcock's ride, Thibaut Pinot's struggles, the cobbled Arenberg stage, on-bike footage, team manager reactions, and various high-speed crashes are also included.

A second trailer (see above) was released in early June in the lead-up to the documentary's release. Clips show interviews with Fabio Jakobsen, Thibaut Pinot, and Yves Lampaert, while action shots of mountain GC battles are interspersed with fast-paced sprint finishes.

Tour de France: Unchained, which was made by Quadbox - a joint venture between Quad and Box to Box Films production companies - will be shown in 190 territories around the world. In France, the series will be known as 'Tour de France: Au cœur du peloton' ('Inside the peloton').

Netflix funded the reported production costs of €8 million to make the series. Tour de France organiser ASO and host broadcaster France Televisions both netted €250,000 each. The eight teams shared the remaining €500,000, giving each team €62,000 ($67,000).

"This project is part of our overall ambition to make our sport more accessible and meet an even wider audience," ASO managing director Yann Le Moënner said when he confirmed the Netflix series during the winter.

“Through a narrative approach, which is additive to the competition itself, the public will be able to discover how the Tour de France represents the ultimate challenge for the competitors; in particular in terms of suffering, pushing their limits and team spirit."

Netflix Tour de France Series Set to be Released in June

Just enough time to binge the 8-part series before the race begins

109th tour de france 2022 stage 19

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

What better way to build the hype for the upcoming tour than dropping it with just enough time to binge before the action kicks off in Bilbao, Spain ?

A preview of the 8-part series was released Monday at Canneséries, a television festival in Cannes, France that hosts many of television's biggest names. There it was confirmed that the show would include rare footage from team buses, hotels, and inside team cars. The producers of the series hope to truly give an inside look at the excitement and drama of World Tour racing.

VeloNews reports that in order to produce the show last year, eight teams participated in the series. Crews followed some of the key races and preparation camps ahead of the 2022 Tour de France. Producers unveiled that one episode deals specifically with Soudal Quick-Step (Quick-Step Deceuninck in 2022).

The goal, of course, is to depict real situations and how the race unfolds. But it’s also entertainment. It’s good to keep in mind that the show’s producers are always seeking out the most entertaining and high-drama moments.

We’re sure to see footage of all the key players — EF Education-EasyPost, Jumbo-Visma, TdF winner Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, Thibaut Pinot, and Groupama-FDJ.

It’s also been confirmed that negotiations are underway to create season two of the series, with a move toward more action and less of a focus on in-depth character narratives. More action from the men’s peloton sounds great to us, but you know what would be even better? A series about the women !

7 new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend (April 12)

Catch Fallout, The Sympathizer, Franklin, and more

Fallout on Prime Video

Notwithstanding the total solar eclipse , things are beginning to brighten up outside, but unless you’re reading this from a beach house in California, it’s still not warm enough to spend your weekends totally detached from the TV.

Thank goodness, then, for streaming services, who are this week offering up a particularly exciting slate of new movies and TV shows to enjoy. Leading the charge is Fallout on Prime Video , Amazon ’s serialized adaptation of the hugely popular post-apocalyptic video game series, while The Sympathizer and Franklin begin streaming on Max and Apple TV Plus , respectively.

Below, we've rounded up the seven biggest new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix , Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend.

Fallout (Prime Video)

It’s not an exaggeration to say we’re living through a golden age of video game adaptations, and Amazon will be hoping its newest game-to-screen series, Fallout , can emulate the success of recent projects like The Last of Us TV show .

Adapted from the post-apocalyptic video game franchise of the same name (by Westworld writing duo Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, no less), this eight-part, 1950s-style series centers on a young woman’s journey across a nuclear war-ravaged Los Angeles. Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan and Walton Goggins lead the cast.

In our Fallout season 1 review , we described the show as “an absolute blast” and one of the best Prime Video shows ever made, so existing Fallout fans need not fear for this project’s quality. For further insight into the series’ product, check out our interviews with the Fallout cast and Nolan himself .

Now available to stream on Prime Video.

The Sympathizer (Max)

Fresh from his Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer , Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple characters in A24’s Park Chan-wook-directed spy thriller The Sympathizer .

This seven-part adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen follows a Vietnamese communist spy (Hoa Xuande) who continues to secretly gather intelligence for the Viet Cong while exiled in the United States after the Vietnam War. Downey Jr. stars in various antagonist roles.

The first episode of The Sympathizer – which critics have described as “a tour de force” adaptation” – is available to stream on Max in the US from Sunday and on Sky in the UK from Monday. The show’s remaining six installments are due to arrive weekly every Sunday.

Available to stream on Max in the US from Sunday and on Sky in the UK from Monday.

Franklin (Apple TV Plus)

Joining Napoleon in the Apple TV Plus biopic library this weekend is Franklin , a new historical miniseries charting the exploits of famed polymath Benjamin Franklin.

Set towards the end of Franklin’s decades-spanning career, this eight-episode show centers on the diplomat’s engineering the Franco-American alliance of 1778. Michael Douglas stars in the title role alongside Noah Jupe, Daniel Mays and Ludivine Sagnier.

Critics have praised Douglas’ performance as “absolutely compelling,” which suggests Franklin could be one of the best Apple TV Plus shows of the year so far. The series’ first three episodes are available to stream now, with the remaining five due to land weekly every Friday.

Now available to stream on Apple TV Plus.

Good Times (Netflix)

Norman Lear's 1970s CBS sitcom Good Times gets the animated treatment on Netflix this weekend.

Featuring the voices of Jay Pharoah, Yvette Nicole Brown, Marsai Martin, JB Smoove and Gerald Anthony Johnson, this adult animated comedy series – produced by the late Lear himself alongside Seth MacFarlane and Stephen Curry – centers on the misadventures of a family living in the Chicago projects.

Suffice to say, Good Times has left preview audiences divided, but critics have said that this animated sequel “improves when it steps out from Normal Lear’s shadow.”

Now available to stream on Netflix.

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)

British comedian Richard Gadd adapts his award-winning, partly autobiographical play Baby Reindeer into a new Netflix series this weekend.

Based on Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, this new drama (from the makers of The End of the F***ing World ) follows a struggling comedian (played by Gadd himself) who becomes an object of obsession for a vulnerable woman (Jessica Gunning).

Critics have described Baby Reindeer as “a tense, creepily filmed series that will stay with you for a long time to come,” so this could be one of the best Netflix shows of the year.

What Jennifer Did (Netflix)

This first of this week’s two documentary picks is What Jennifer Did on Netflix.

This feature-length investigation takes a microscope to the 2010 case of Jennifer Pan, a young Vietnamese-Canadian girl who was inexplicably left as the sole witness when armed intruders broke into her home and killed her parents.

If you don’t already know how this shocking case unfolded, we’ll refrain from disclosing spoilers here, but judging by its trailer, What Jennifer Did has the makings of being one of the best Netflix documentaries for some time.

Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion (Max)

If you enjoyed Netflix’s White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch , HBO has a new fashion-focused exposé documentary for you.

Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion examines the toxic origins and culture behind the titular teen clothing brand, which has faced accusations of racism and misogyny by former employees, executives and fashion insiders.

Now available to stream on Max.

Tour de France after all? Wout van Aert said in December that is practically not an option

Wout van Aert won't be participating in the Giro d'Italia, missing his second major goal of the year after the most important spring classics, as he announced in a video message. The Belgian of Visma | Lease a Bike now has just one main goal left, out of the ones he listed during the team's day in December. And that is exactly why a simple assessment towards the Tour de France could now suddenly turn out quite differently...

Van Aert took a different approach last winter. He significantly cut down on his cyclo-cross season, focused even more on road racing, and made even more selective choices than before. Everything was focused on preparing for the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. No Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico for him, but instead, a high-altitude training camp. Then, everything went awry on just his eleventh race day of 2024, after a hard crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen. Van Aert broke a collarbone, seven ribs and his sternum.

The fractures are healing well, the superstar states on the official channels of Visma | Lease a Bike. "But my ribs are still a limiting factor. At this point, I cannot train at all. I'm trying to do my first pedal strokes on the bike, but it is not enough for serious training," he tells us, explaining why he is skipping the Giro.

Van Aert was set to ride the Tour of Italy for the first time, having participated in every edition of the Tour de France since 2019. After nine stage wins, wearing the yellow jersey, and securing the green jersey (2022), Van Aert felt it was time for a change. Jonas Vingegaard, his good friend and versatile teammate, was left disappointed. If he recovers in time from his crash in the Tour of the Basque Country, he will have to go for his third consecutive Tour victory without Van Aert's support.

Will Van Aert stand by his earlier decision?

Or perhaps not? Now that Van Aert is missing the Giro, the Tour de France suddenly seems entirely possible. Just like for Vingegaard, this would obviously require sufficient time to train and get into top shape leading up to the Tour de France. The problem is that Wout's third and only remaining big goal for 2024 was (and is) not the Tour, but rather the time trial at the Olympic Games in Paris. He shared this in December during an open interview with IDLProCycling.com , among others. "In the championships, I often come across guys who have prepared 100 percent for the time trial, whereas I often came from another race and then did the best I could. I've never done a race like that with thorough preparation," he explained.

The Tour de France finishes on July 21, 2024, in Nice. The Olympic time trial is scheduled for July 27. "Without the Tour, I have the time to prepare 100 percent for the time trial. That's what I'm looking forward to," Van Aert honestly said. In fact, he even saw the Tour as an obstacle for his competitors to achieving the gold in Paris. "Because of the Olympic Games, I wanted to choose a different approach. The Olympic time trial is the Saturday after the Tour de France, so I don't think the guys who do the Tour can show the maximum of their capabilities in that time trial. A training camp leading up to the time trial is a much better preparation."

Screen Rant

Franklin: what happened to gilbert, marquis de lafayette.

As seen in Franklin, the Marquis de Lafayette was one of the most important figures in both the Revolutionary War and the French Revolution.

  • Lafayette played a crucial role in both American and French history, earning the title "hero of two worlds."
  • Lafayette proved his military prowess at the Battle of Brandywine, rallying troops against the British.
  • After the American Revolution, Lafayette became a leading voice in the French Revolution and maintained his hero status in America.

The new Apple TV+ historical drama Franklin introduces a number of important political figures in France during the time of the American Revolution, and none had a greater impact than the Marquis de Lafayette. The French aristocrat fought bravely for the Continental Army during the American Revolution, establishing himself as a leader in combat and politics. In Franklin, the Marquis de Lafayette, known more familiarly by his first name Gilbert, befriends Benjamin Franklin's grandson, William Temple Franklin, while also acting as a major supporter for the Colonials in the political space.

The Marquis de Lafayette's career in war and politics began at a young age, not all of which is covered in Franklin . He was just 19 at the time Benjamin Franklin made his arrival in France to lobby for support for the United States of America. He would go on to eventually become one of the most powerful men in France over the course of the French Revolution. Known as the "hero of two worlds", Lafayette played a major role in the development of both the United States of America and modern France around the turn of the 19th century.

Franklin Cast & Character Guide: Every Real Life Person Explained

Marquis de lafayette and the battle at brandywine, the french nobleman proved himself in combat..

Per the Encyclopedia Brittanica , Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette paid his own way to America in 1777 seeking glory in the ongoing American Revolution. Despite his age and lack of experience, Lafayette was appointed a place on George Washington's staff after impressing the general. While there is some debate about what his actual role was, Lafayette learned what it took to be a battle commander under Washington, with the notion that he would soon be granted command of troops when he was ready.

Lafayette's first battle was the Battle of Brandywine, which saw British troops under General Howe attempt to take Philadelphia. After the British outflanked the American forces protecting the capital of Colonial America, Washington sent Lafayette to aid General John Sullivan in the defense of the area. Lafayette famously rallied the troops against the British forces , and while the superior enemy eventually overwhelmed the Colonial fighters, Lafayette continued to lead a more organized and effective retreat despite being wounded in the leg. Washington cited him for his bravery after the battle, helping Lafayette gain a reputation as an effective military leader.

Lafayette During The American Revolution: Becoming General & Winning The War

Lafayette's skill in battle and diplomacy helped him ascend the ranks quickly..

At Washington's recommendation, Lafayette was given command of a division of Continental troops , and he continued to demonstrate outstanding prowess as a military leader. He camped with George Washington at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778 before taking his division to Albany, New York to prepare for an invasion of Quebec at the request of the Colonial Board of War. Lafayette pushed back after realizing how ill-prepared his forces were for a winter invasion, and established his skills as a diplomat further by convincing the Continental Congress to abandon the campaign.

Lafayette continued to serve with distinction as a general in multiple battles across the colonies, famously relieving the fleeing general Charles Lee and salvaging an organized retreat at the Battle of Monmouth. By that time, the French and American alliance was public, and Lafayette acted as an important intermediary between the French and American forces. In 1779, Lafayette returned to France to push for further aid for the Continental Army , and returned in 1780 with a force of 6,000 French soldiers under the command of the French general Rochambeau and six ships, who he worked directly with Benjamin Franklin to secure.

Upon his return, Lafayette established a highly effective hit-and-run style of combat, which he used to harass the forces of Bendict Arnold and General Lord Conwallis in a campaign across Virginia. It was Lafayette's forces who pushed Cornwallis to Yorktown , Virginia, where he was summarily surrounded by Continental forces on land and French ships from the sea. Cornwallis' pivotal surrender effectively ended the war. Lafayette ended the war as one of the most effective and celebrated battle commanders on either side of the conflict.

What Happened To Gilbert, Marquis de Lafayette, After The American Revolution

Lafayette turned his attention from one revolution to another..

In the years following the American Revolution, Lafeyette returned to France and established himself as one of the leading progressive voices in the country as a true Republican, despite his aristocratic and royal ties. As the French Revolution began, Lafayette maintained his support for a constitutional monarchy that shared power between King Louis XVI and a constitutional body of government. Elected to the newly-recognized National Assembly, Lafayette drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with the help of Thomas Jefferson , which shared many of the sentiments outlined in the American Bill of Rights.

Lafayette was named commander of the national guard of Paris a day after the famous storming of the Bastille prison, and in that capacity saved the lives of the king and Queen Marie Antoinette. While Lafayette helped transfer power from the aristocracy to the people , his reputation was damaged when his guards opened fire on a crowd of petitioners calling for the abdication of King Louis XVI. As Maximilien de Robespierre rose to power and the infamous Reign of Terror began, Lafayette and his family fled to Austria, where he remained as a captive until 1797.

Lafayette's Legacy In The United States Of America

Despite being french, lafayette was a key figure in the founding of america..

Despite his declining popularity in France, Lafayette remained a hero in America as one of the most influential leaders of the Revolutionary War. In 1803, after Lafayette retired from the public eye to protest the reign of the tyrannical Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Jefferson offered to make him the governor of the newly-acquired Louisiana Territory, but Lafayette refused the offer. He served in the French Chamber of Deputies from 1814-1824 before returning to visit America.

In 2002, the Marquis de Lafayette became just the fifth person granted honorary U.S. citizenship.

Lafayette toured the country as a hero, and in honor of the patriotism that he inspired, dozens of cities were named Lafayette in his honor. He became the first foreign citizen to address the U.S. House of Representatives, and was lauded across the country. Despite his French background, Lafayette is widely considered a founding father of America , and he even insisted on being buried with soil from Bunker Hill in Boston. Franklin doesn't cover the entirety of Lafayette's life or his influence on America, but his importance at the time can not be overstated.
