The National Cherry Blossom Festival

The National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the Mayor of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC. Today’s Festival now spans four weeks and welcomes more than 1.5 million people to enjoy diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit. The festival features a range of spectacular events. Local restaurants even get into the spirit with the Cherry Picks program, featuring cherry blossom-themed food and drink items.

The average peak bloom, when 70% of the flowers of the cherry blossom trees are open, is April 4. In the past, peak bloom has occurred as early as March 15 and as late as April 18, according to the National Park Service. As a reminder, please do your part in helping to protect the National Mall by never picking the cherry blossoms (it is against the law).

Aircraft Carrier Intrepid

Launched in 1943, the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and Vietnam. Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974.

The Zoo is located on 265 acres. The Bronx Zoo exhibits more than 5,000 animals. There are over 600 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates and 1,500 species of plants. Every year hundreds of animals are born at this Zoo. The zoo is a self-guided tour. Routes are informative, and well-marked.

Do not be disappointed if the animal you came to see is not on exhibit. Many animals are sensitive to the weather and other conditions. There are many exhibits that you can see in any kind of weather. Ride and attraction availability subject to weather, capacity, mechanical, and/or animal-related issues.

All buildings are wheelchair-accessible. A limited number of wheelchairs and strollers are available for rent at each entrance on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dining and Shopping

Main locations for food and gifts at Dancing Crane Plaza will be open daily, with adjusted operations. Dancing Crane Café will be open for take-out only, and the expansive Plaza seating area has been rearranged for plenty of picnic tables at appropriate social distancing. Several other foodservice and snack locations will be open throughout the park, based on weather and daily attendance. The Bronx Zoo Store will be open and zoo staff will assist with guest entry and shopping for appropriate social distancing. Ice cream parlors, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants are everywhere offering an oasis of refreshment. Flowers abound. In the summer, the Mall is the place to explore and shop or eat. Perhaps you fancy yourself a connoisseur of artisan food, beverage, or wares and support the Crafts Guild. On the other hand, you could be a mercurial and merry-making fan of the Revels Guild. Whichever guild you choose, fly their banners high and wear their colors proudly. In the process, you can earn them points and help them reap the rewards of the Queen’s generosity! Hopefully the competitive spirit remains friendly…

1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

One day in New York itinerary 

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)  

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan. 

In my opinion, your one-day in NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .   

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing.

The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day. 

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

Statue of Liberty 

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)  

Your one-day New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.    

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

 If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket. 

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

Lunch options: where to eat 

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request. 

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

Many believe that visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.   

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.  

Times Square 

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)   

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.  

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.  

Rockefeller Center 

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)  

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.     

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Central Park 

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.  

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.  

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things there you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).   

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

• Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
• Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
• Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
• End your day with a Broadway show.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

• Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
• Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park for some more exploring.
• Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

How to get around New York City

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

Final thoughts on one day in New York

There are so many amazing things to do in NYC in a day of course that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best if you have 24 hours in the Big Apple.

From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

Top Things to Do if You Have Just 24 Hours to Spend in Dallas, Texas

If you only have 24 hours or less in Dallas you will have one busy day. Sleeping in and calling room service is not an option. The city is home art-filled plazas, presidential memorials, and incredible museums where you can take in various art and cultures.

Since Dallas is so large, it’s hard to see most of it in just one day. If you’re fixing to see the whole city and as many of its neighborhoods as possible, there are all kinds of ways to do it, from Segways to tour buses (you can even tour the best bars in town on a party bike), which I highlight at the end.

However, my recommended Dallas itinerary will mostly focus on an easy-to-follow self-guided walking tour.

Where to Stay in Dallas

First, let’s discuss where you should base yourself while in Dallas.

A lot of thing things to do that you’ll find on this One Day in Dallas itinerary are located in the West End Historical District in downtown Dallas. Therefore, I recommend staying the night there.

And if you’re driving and just doing a day trip to Dallas from elsewhere, find a good spot in the West End to park your car and then explore on foot!

Dallas Accommodation Recommendations:

Hyatt Regency: Located right by the Reunion Tower (where I recommend you end your day at sunset), it makes it easy to finish up the sightseeing portion of your 24 hours in Dallas and quickly head to your room to change for dinner and drinks.

Aloft Dallas: A budget-friendly option in downtown Dallas that is located right across the street from Pioneer Plaza, which you’ll see in itinerary below is where I recommend you start your day in Dallas.

Omni Dallas: Located in between Reunion Tower and Pioneer Plaza, you’ll be in a great spot for starting and ending your sightseeing journey in Dallas. Morning in Dallas: Spend it in the West End Historical District

Now here is my recommended itinerary for the top things to do in Dallas if you have just 24 hours to spend there.

As I mentioned above, I recommend starting your day and spending most of your time in the West End Historical District of Dallas. Get up early and be ready for a cultural and history-filled day in this vibrant and interesting section of Dallas.

These morning sights are easy to be walked between as you can see from this map. Also, zoom out and you can see in the bottom left where the Reunion Tower is located, which I where I recommend you end your day before dinner and the nightlife portion of your 24 hours in Dallas.

Cattle Drive Sculptures

Wake up early and beat the crowds by starting your day at Pioneer Plaza in the West End where you’ll get to see an impressive work of art called the Cattle Drive Sculptures.

The larger than life Cattle Drive Sculptures consist of three cowboys and a herd of cattle…running right through Pioneer Plaza in Downtown Dallas! It’s definitely a cool sight to behold and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dallas, making it a fun way to start your day in Dallas.

Dealey Plaza and the Grassy Knolls

Dealey Plaza is known for two things: being the “birthplace of Dallas” and being the site of JFK’s assassination in 1963.

Dealey Plaza is referred to as the birthplace of Dallas because it where the first home and trading post in Dallas was built.

To see the exact site of JFK’s assassination, head to the Grassy Knolls part of Dealey Plaza.

The Sixth Floor Museum

One of the most defining moments in American History happened when John F. Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. The tragedy sparked a never-ending slew of conspiracy theories and dogged pursuit of the truth by investigative minds for over half a century.

At the Sixth Floor Museum, you can discover more about the assassination and even take a tour that includes a guided trip down to the Grassy Knolls and the JFK Memorial.

John F. Kennedy Memorial

Just one block from Dealey Plaza is the John F. Kennedy Memorial, which was dedicated in 1970. Even if you don’t do the above mentioned tour, it’s worth going here on your own after you tour the Sixth Floor Museum.

The memorial consists of square blocks made of cement that you can walk among. In the middle is a large plaque with Kennedy’s name on it.

Separate the facts, stories and theories behind that pivotal day in 1963

Join this JFK Assassination and Museum Tour with Lee Harvey Oswald Rooming House and put evetything in a right place.Visit both the Grassy Knoll in Dealey Plaza and the John F. Kennedy Memorial during this tour that includes entrance fees and round-trip transport. Your historian-guide will acquaint you with interesting facts and stories.

Old Red Museum of Dallas County History and Culture

The Old Red Museum is located in a gorgeous red-hued building that was built in 1892 and once served as the courthouse (aptly named the Old Red Courthouse). The building is designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style.

After you’re done appreciating the architecture of the building, head inside the museum to learn more about Dallas’s past and how it has impacted the culture and vibe of Dallas today. You’ll see some of Dallas’s most prized artifacts, and families will enjoy the interactive features of many of the exhibits.

Afternoon in Dallas: Culture and Art

After lunch, I recommend spending your time at one of the below listed places. If you have just one day in Dallas, it will be hard to do more than one or two, but that gives you a reason to return to Dallas one day!

The Dallas Arboretum

While in Dallas, you should take some time to experience the differences in the sights and sounds at the beautiful Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Get an education on history, nature, art, and horticulture all in one with a visit to this world-famous destination.

Dallas Museum of Art

Five millennia and over 25,000 pieces span this impressive open-access museum in Dallas. After nearly 120 years of collecting, the DMA is one of the ten largest art museums nationwide. If you love art, this is the place to head so make sure it’s on your Dallas itinerary.

George W Bush Presidential Library and Museum

The library contains an impressive collection of presidential records from the Bush administration and a museum memorializing George W Bush and his term in the white house. Interactive exhibits and tributes recall a pivotal time in American History marred by a malevolent terrorist attack on 9/11.

With 12 halls and exhibits including a children’s museum and a huge Dinosaur exhibit, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science will easily eat up your afternoon. The museum even includes exhibits on sports and weather.

Evening and Nightlife in Dallas

Reunion tower.

The best view of Dallas is from the indoor and outdoor observation decks of Reunion Tower. The geosphere at the top of the tower provides a sweeping 360-degree view. You’ll see for miles in any direction.

The Reunion Tower is a great place to go for sunset viewing before getting ready for your night on the town.

Dinner and Drinks in Dallas

By finishing off the sightseeing part of your day in Dallas at Reunion Tower, you’re also finishing up back in the West End. After you get your sunset pics, head to one of the many restaurants located in the West End for some delicious Texan cuisine.

After you fill your belly, you’re a short walk away from fantastic bars and pubs to have some tasty drinks in, before you make your way back to your hotel, exhausted from your fun and cultural day in Dallas!

With this itinerary, you’ll be able to see La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and a few other Gaudi landmarks, explore Barcelona’s old town with its famous Gothic Quarter, Plaça Reial, La Rambla, visit a local market and, of course, taste some Spanish tapas!

If this is your first time in the city and you want to see as many of the best places of Barcelona in a day and still keep it relaxed and enjoyable, this guide will help you plan a perfect trip.

Read on for a detailed itinerary and our experience-based tips on how to make the most out of your Barcelona day trip!

Barcelona is at the top of any Spain bucket list and one of the most visited cities in Europe. And rightly so – the city truly has it all: centuries-old history, incredible art and architecture, the famous Gaudi landmarks, delicious food, beautiful beaches, and a laid-back atmosphere.

But with so many amazing places to see in Barcelona , how do you decide what to see if you only have one day in the city… I hope that our experience-based tips and sightseeing itinerary will help you plan a great trip and make the most of your day in Barcelona.

To help you plan your time, our recommendations are based on what can actually be done in just a day. At the bottom of this article, you can also find a short overview of this itinerary indicating all the main sights and approximate visiting times.

We also include a map to give you a better idea of where everything is located and practical tips and info you absolutely need to know if you want to visit the main sights. But first – some essential planning tips!

Good to know!

Before you start planning your 1-day Barcelona sightseeing itinerary, there are a few things you really have to know:

First, the most popular attractions in the city are really busy and are scattered throughout the town. So with just a day in Barcelona, it’s essential to make a good sightseeing plan in advance. That’s where this itinerary will help.

Second, it’s important to get skip-the-line tickets for all the main landmarks and places that you absolutely want to see in advance. Otherwise, you’ll not only waste too much time, but you also risk not being able to visit them at all.

Also, with just one day in Barcelona – and if you want to make the utmost of your limited time – I highly recommend that you look into organized tours that include a visit to several of the main landmarks . Going with a local guide will save you lots of guesswork, research, and time on the day itself. It will also make your Barcelona day trip more relaxing and enjoyable.

And finally, be sure to wear comfortable shoes , dress in layers, pack sun protection, and always have some water with you – ideally, in a reusable bottle. It’s also good to know that shorts, short skirts, sleeveless shirts, and bare feet (flip-flops, etc.) are not allowed inside La Sagrada Familia.

Here’s what you could see in Barcelona in a day:

Plaça de Catalunya

Start your day in Barcelona with a visit to Catalonia Square , the bustling heart of Barcelona. This is the place where the old and the ‘new’ city meet.

Plaça de Catalunya is located at the crossroads of several major boulevards and is a busy transport hub. It’s also a popular shopping area, home to one of the biggest shopping centers in Barcelona, El Corte Inglés.

In the middle of the square, there’s some greenery with sculptures and fountains, and probably even more pigeons than in Milan and Venice together.

If you visit Plaça de Catalunya early in the morning, it will likely be rather quiet. If you are looking for a nice place for breakfast or some coffee, you’ll find some cafés in this area too. However, the most famous establishment Café Zurich doesn’t open until 9 am… And by that time, you should be standing in line at the first landmark already!

Passeig de Gràcia

It’s about a 12-15 minutes walk from Catalunya Square to the next places on your itinerary, the famous Gaudi buildings Casa Batllo and Casa Mila.

On the way, you’ll pass Passeig de Gracia , one of the main boulevards of Barcelona. In addition to the Gaudi masterpieces, there are many other stunning buildings here. The most notable are Casa Lleó i Morera , Casa Amatller , Casa Mulleras , and Casa Josefina Bonet – all just next Casa Batllo.

Next, you’ll have to decide which of the two Gaudi buildings to visit – Casa Batllo or Casa Mila. We recommend Casa Batllo because it’s more diverse, but I think Casa Mila (La Pedrera) is just as impressive.

These two buildings are located very close to each other, so you should see both of them from the outside either way. But – with just a day in Barcelona – I recommend visiting only one of them inside (or you will have to skip something else). We opted for Casa Batllo – see more info and pictures below.

Casa Batlló

Located on Passeig de Gracia and just a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya, Casa Batlló is one of the most famous Gaudi buildings. If you visit just one of the houses built by Gaudi inside, this one is probably the most impressive one. They now also have a 10D experience that makes a visit here even more special.

Normally, Casa Batllo opens at 9 AM and by then the line is usually quite long already. So be sure to get your tickets in advance and arrive at least half an hour before it opens. The earlier you can start, the more time you’ll have left for the other places on your itinerary.

Our experience: We visited Casa Batllo with a tour that covers all the Gaudi buildings mentioned in this itinerary (so it could be a good option for the first half of your day trip as well). They have some kind of special arrangement that allows you to enter the building a few minutes before it opens to the public. So you get to see some of the most impressive rooms in Casa Batllo before the crowds arrive.

Casa Milà – La Pedrera

Casa Milà , or La Pedrera , is an apartment building designed by Gaudi. It’s also located on Passeig de Gràcia, just a 5 minutes walk from Casa Batllo.

Probably the most impressive feature of Casa Mila is the rooftop. However, if you want to visit it, you’ll have to wait in another long queue. I’d only do this if you decide to skip Casa Batllo – in that case, be sure to start your day here and arrive before it opens. If you want to visit Casa Mila, book your skip-the-line tickets in advance !

We recommend you just see Casa Mila from the outside and make your way to the next attraction – Park Güell. If you are going on your own, it’s best to take a taxi here, or you’ll lose too much time.

The tour that we took included transportation, and a minibus was waiting to bring us to the park, and afterward also to La Sagrada Familia. There are also other tours that bring you to Park Güell and La Sagrada Familia – two must-see landmarks that are both a bit outside of the main tourist routes and where it’s really helpful to have transportation and tickets arranged in advance.

Park Güell

Park Güell is a big park designed by Gaudi. Located about 3km from the city center, it’s a bit of a detour from the other sights. But it’s absolutely worth a visit, even if you only have a day in Barcelona and have to be very selective about which places to visit.

It’s impossible to describe how unique and beautiful this park really is. It’s like you step inside some fantasy forest… But, just like any other place in Barcelona, Park Güell is incredibly busy. And so it’s sometimes difficult to appreciate how special it is. Nevertheless, it’s a place you absolutely have to see when visiting Barcelona!

Important! If you are visiting Park Güell on your own, be sure that you book your ticket online at least a few days in advance or you risk not being able to visit at all! It often sells out completely, and we heard from several of our readers that they were not able to get in without a reservation…

Good to know: There are bathroom facilities and a café at Park Güell, so you could get a quick lunch here. However, the queues are long everywhere and by opting for lunch, you’ll have to sacrifice precious sightseeing time. So if you can, pack a small snack so that you don’t have to waste too much time.

You could probably spend half a day at Park Güell alone, but with just one day in Barcelona, you can’t linger here too long. The next stop is the famous La Sagrada Familia. Unless you visit with a tour that includes transport, get a taxi. Metro is also possible, but by the time you walk to the nearest station, you’ll likely be halfway there already by taxi.

La Sagrada Familia

Basilica La Sagrada Familia is the #1 landmark that you absolutely have to see in Barcelona. And yes, it’s busy, but it’s popular for a reason. No matter how much time you have in Barcelona, you have to see the interior as well. If you are really short on time and have to skip something from this itinerary, sacrifice anything else but not La Sagrada Familia!

I can’t think of any other man-made structure in the whole world that can even try to compare to La Sagrada Familia. It’s a real masterpiece, every inch of it, inside and out.

Just as with all the main Gaudi landmarks in Barcelona, you really have to get skip-the-line tickets for La Sagrada Familia in advance , or you risk not being able to visit (or waste too much precious time queuing). If you want to also visit the tower, you should know that regular tickets don’t include it.

The tour that we took included a visit to the towers, and this tour includes that as well. While really impressive to see, the towers of La Sagrada Familia aren’t an absolute must if you are in a hurry.

Good to know: La Sagrada Familia is also a place where it really pays to go with a local guide. The church is full of symbolism and hundreds of incredible details – some of the things that you wouldn’t even notice otherwise. There are countless options when it comes to guided tours of La Sagrada Familia, alone or in combination with the other landmarks.

Lunch at Mercado la Boqueria

If you didn’t take snacks with you, you’ll likely be starving by now. If you follow this itinerary, it will likely be around 2-3 pm by now, so pretty much in time for a Spanish lunch. There are some restaurants close to La Sagrada, or you can take a metro to the old town (subway station ‘Liceu’) and have lunch at Mercado la Boqueria .

Mercado la Boqueria, aka La Rambla market, is located in the heart of the historic city center. It’s the most popular food market in Barcelona and a nice place to try some local food.

You’ll find everything here – from fruit and vegetables, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, to all kinds of cold and warm snacks, cured meat, seafood tapas, paella, etc.

Even if you already had a snack earlier, definitely check it out for some special food and a fun atmosphere. It’s a really nice place to visit in Barcelona and a welcome change from all the landmarks.

Just next to the market is La Rambla, probably the best-known street in Barcelona. This wide boulevard has a tree-lined pedestrian promenade in the middle and it’s always crowded – with people, souvenir shops, and cafes.

I wouldn’t linger here too long, but since you are here anyway, walk a small part of this street, navigating between the crowds, street artists, and souvenir vendors, while trying to see some of the architecture on both sides of the street.

If you want to see one more Gaudi building (from the outside), walk to Palau Güell . I really wouldn’t recommend visiting it inside. By now, it will likely be late afternoon, and you better spend the rest of your Barcelona day trip exploring the historic old town.

Gothic Quarter – Barcelona Old Town

The Gothic Quarter or Barri Gòtic is the heart of old Barcelona. It’s here that you’ll find some of the most impressive oldest buildings in the city.

But it’s also just a really nice neighborhood to explore, with narrow streets, picturesque squares, quirky boutique stores, and plenty of cafes and restaurants.

Below, I indicated the main places not to miss in the Gothic Quarter.

Cathedral of Barcelona

Many people mistakenly think that La Sagrada Familia is the Cathedral of Barcelona, but that is not the case. The main Cathedral is much older and it can be found in the Gothic Quarter.

While it’s a more traditional church that can’t be compared to La Sagrada in any way, the Cathedral of Barcelona is really impressive. Especially the interior. So if you still have some energy left, be sure to check it out. The cloisters with a small garden and a few resident geese are also nice to see.

If you have some extra time, you can also take an elevator and visit the rooftop of the Cathedral. It’s something nice to do if it’s not too busy, but if there’s a long line and you’re feeling tired after all the walking and sightseeing, don’t feel too bad if you decide to skip it.

Good to know: You’ll need a ticket in order to visit the cathedral. You can just get the tickets at a ticket office that’s located in the same square, or you can also buy them online in advance. The elevator to the rooftop requires a separate ticket. The Cathedral is open daily until rather late in the evening. For more practical information, see the official website .

Carrer del Bisbe

Located just next to the Barcelona Cathedral, Carrer del Bisbe is one of the most beautiful streets in the Gothic Quarter.

It’s best known for El Pont del Bisbe (Bishop’s Bridge), an extremely picturesque overhead walkway that connects two buildings on different sides of the street.

This is probably the most photographed street in Barcelona and one of the most beautiful parts of the old town. Don’t miss it!

Plaça del Rei

At the back side of the Cathedral, you’ll find one of the oldest squares in Barcelona, Plaça del Rei .

Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA) is also located here. It’s a place where you can see the archeological site of the old city of Barcelona, with streets and buildings from 2000 years ago.

However, by now you’ll probably have done enough sightseeing for the day. So I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether to visit this museum inside. We found it quite interesting and it doesn’t require that much time, but there’s only that much you can do in a day, right… Anyway, you can also just see if the museum is still open when you get there and decide on the spot.

But even if you don’t visit the museum, it’s worth coming to see the square and the architecture of the surrounding streets.

Plaça Reial

Plaça Reial is a big town square lined with impressive buildings, palm trees, and a fountain in the middle. Do note the unique street lanterns designed by Gaudi himself.

There are several cafés here and it’s a nice place to sit down for a drink and do some people-watching. You’ll also find plenty of good restaurants in this area where you could have dinner. Keep in mind, however, that Spanish dinner time is much later than what you might be used to, and many better restaurants only open from 7.30 – 8 pm.

Flamenco Show & Dinner OR Food Tour

If you have one full day in Barcelona and want to experience as much of the city as possible, there are a few nice things you could do in the evening. Don’t worry – these are much more relaxing than the rest of the day, and there’s food involved too.

One option is to watch a Flamenco show . The most popular option (and available daily) is the 1-hour performance at the City Hall Theater (just near Plaça Catalunya). They have several shows every evening, so you can choose the time that best suits you – before or after dinner.

Alternatively, you can also opt for a place that offers a flamenco show and a dinner . This might be more relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. One of the best-rated options is this flamenco show with dinner at Tablao Flamenco Cordobes . It’s just a few minutes walk from Plaça Reial, so very easy to fit into this itinerary.

Another option is to join a local food tour . Of course, it’s not as relaxing as watching a show or just sitting down at a restaurant, but you get to know the more local side of the city and taste several traditional dishes and drinks.

Food tours have become one of our favorite ways to explore any city. If you think you’ll have some energy left at the end of the day, it can be a nice way to end your short visit to Barcelona and make it even more memorable.

Here’s one of the best-rated wine & tapas tours that would fit this itinerary quite well too. It starts at Plaça Sant Jaume, very close to the Cathedral of Barcelona, and they also offer an option to extend it with a flamenco show – the best of both worlds.

So, this is what your day in Barcelona could look like. As promised, below you can find a short recap of this itinerary and a map indicating all the main sights mentioned in this article.

Here’s how to see the best of Barcelona in 1 day:

8 AM: Have coffee at Plaça Catalunya and see the most impressive buildings on Passeig de Gràcia .

9 AM: Visit Casa Battlo (get skip-the-line tickets if going without a tour). Arrive early!

10.30 AM: Walk on Passeig de Gracia and see Casa Mila from the outside. If you are not going with a tour, take a taxi to Park Güell.

11 AM: Visit Park Güell ( get your tickets in advance !) and have a small snack for lunch.

12.45 PM: Make your way to La Sagrada Familia (by tax or with a tour).

1.15 PM: Visit La Sagrada Familia (if not going on a tour, get fast-track tickets in advance !).

3 PM: Take a metro to the city center. Late lunch at Mercado La Boqueria .

4 PM: Explore La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter (+ visit the Cathedral of Barcelona inside, and potentially also the MUHBA museum).

6-9 PM: Flamenco show + dinner or food tour + flamenco show . See the best options explained above.

Please note that the hours are indicated just for your reference so that you have a better idea of how to plan your time.

The timing is based on our experience . But instead of booking all the tickets ourselves and taking a taxi for the longer distances, we took this tour for the first part of the day starting with Casa Batllo and ending with La Sagrada Familia. So, this is our recommended itinerary for the very best of Barcelona in a day. Of course, this is just one of the countless ways to plan your trip. But it gives you a good idea of the main sights to see and how to plan your time in order to make the most out of your quick visit.

If you have time, I highly recommend that you make some time for an evening activity as suggested above (flamenco show and/or food tour). It will make your first visit to Barcelona so much more special and memorable than just rushing through the main landmarks!

Where to stay in Barcelona

If you are visiting Barcelona for just one day, it’s likely that you are visiting the city as part of a cruise and don’t really need to worry about this.

If, however, you are staying in the city for a few nights, I highly recommend booking a hotel in the area close to Plaça de Catalunya . This is really the most convenient neighborhood for sightseeing!

We stayed at the Acta Splendid Hotel and the value quality/location-wise couldn’t be better. There are many other hotels and accommodations in this area, for all budgets. For example, H10 Universitat is a very nice mid-budget hotel with a beautiful rooftop bar.

TIP: If you need an airport transfer, the Barcelona Airport Aerobus is one of the most convenient options.

The Grand Canyon whitewater rafting price is $465 per person (tax included) in 2024 for those who wish to drive to Peach Springs, Arizona. Price includes all river related safety gear, transportation from the Hualapai Lodge to the Colorado River and back, picnic lunch, beverages and snacks. The following can be added to your one day Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trip: Helicopter out of Grand Canyon $199 per person (tax included) – Not currently available for 2024 Visit to the Skywalk – Not an option in 2024

Yes, we offer one day Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trips with transportation from/to Las Vegas. You will be picked up and dropped off at your hotel. If you’re staying in a vacation rental, pick ups can be arranged at the nearest hotel, casino, or grocery store.

One day Grand Canyon rafting trips run every day from March 15 to October 31st.

Yes, all rafters must be at least 8 years old.

The trips begin at the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs, Arizona. Peach Springs is a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas and a 2.5 hour drive from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. On the day of your trip, you will check-in at 7 a.m. From the Hualapai Lodge, you will take a bus ride to the Diamond Creek put-in on the Colorado River.

The closest and only one-day whitewater rating trip in Grand Canyon is this, the Hualapai River Runners, one-day trip. It is a 2+ hour drive from the South Rim to the meeting location in Peach Springs. The 4 to 8-day Upper Grand Canyon rafting trips end with a hike up to the South Rim. While 5 to 12-day Lower Grand Canyon trips start with a hike down from the South Rim. In addition there are half day floats in Glen Canyon lying just upstream from Grand Canyon with a 2+ hour drive from the South Rim to Paige, Az.

Not running in 2024 at the moment – For $199 per person you can add a helicopter lift out of Grand Canyon to your trip. You will raft 35 river miles and arrive at Quartermaster Canyon between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Here you will take a quick 6-7-minute helicopter flight back to the rim of the Grand Canyon. From here, you’ll take a bus back to the Hualapai Lodge, arriving between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

If you forgo the helicopter you will continue rafting for approximately two more hours. Enjoy the scenery of the Canyon for 19 more river miles and arrive at Pearce Ferry, where you will take a bus ride back to Peach Springs, arriving the Hualapai Lodge between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Skywalk is not available with this option.

Yes! The action begins right away with eight Grand Canyon whitewater rapids within the first ten miles. You will get wet! The rapids are rated II and III+, which makes for a wild roller coaster ride of wave trains. After the rapids, the rest of the river trip will be smooth water and incredible Grand Canyon views.

During the day, you will hike and explore a beautiful side canyon with a series of waterfalls called Travertine Grotto, run more rapids, and enjoy a picnic lunch on a sandy beach. Lunch typically consists of deli-style sandwiches with chips, fruit, cookies, and trail mix. Snacks, water, and soft drinks are always available. If you have food allergies, let us know. Most dietary allergies can be accommodated.

Your raft will be a 22-foot, motorized inflatable pontoon, which carries 6-8 people. There are typically 6-8 boats traveling down river in a group.

The Grand Canyon West Skywalk is the only place where visitors can step out onto a glass walkway nearly 4,000 feet above the floor of the Grand Canyon. If you want to experience the Skywalk you will need to add on the helicopter to your trip.  Rafters who choose to do the Skywalk will be helicoptered to the rim first and will have approximately a 30-minute visit at the Skywalk. For 2022 it is unclear if rafters will be able to stop at the Skywalk.

If you are driving yourself, we recommend staying at the Hualapai Lodge the night before and/or the night after your expedition as it is an early start with a full day of activity. This is the only lodging option in Peach Springs. We have discounted rates for the Lodge and we are happy to book your rooms for you.

Historically speaking weather patterns in Grand Canyon are as follows: March, April, May: cooler temperatures, strong winds June, July, August: hottest months, temperatures between 95°F – 115°F. July, August, September: Monsoon season can bring afternoon clouds and rain showers. September, October: cooler temperatures Learn more about Grand Canyon weather for rafting .

The Colorado River water temperature is around 50°- 55°F all year round. This is a whitewater rafting trip, so you will get wet!

When you sign-up you’ll be provided with a detailed packing list. No matter what time of year, we highly recommend you bring waterproof rain gear (jacket and pants) to protect you from the splash of the rapids, rain and wind. If you’re rafting in the spring or fall, you’ll want to bring layers to keep warm. Sun protection is a must as you’ll be spending a long day out in the Arizona sun.

One Day in Athens: The Perfect 1 Day Itinerary for Athens

One day in Athens may not seem like a long time to explore the capital city of Greece, but you can visit and see a surprising number of top attractions with just 24 hours in Athens. Of course, if you’re planning a weekend city break in Athens, then you can do all of these essential attractions and more.

Visiting Athens in one day is most likely if you’re stopping by at the start or end of a Greek island hopping itinerary . A one day Athens itinerary might also be useful if you’re visiting Athens as a port of call on a cruise.

Fortunately, Athens is a manageable destination to visit in one day, with lots of attractions concentrated in a fairly compact area. Its central vibrant neighbourhoods are dotted with ancient ruins, so you can enjoy a cocktail in one of super cool bars one minute and be visiting another awesome ruin the next.

One Day in Athens: Essential Information

If you’re planning to see Athens in one day, I’d recommend being smart with your travel and accommodation location in order to maximise your time in Athens. Read one for my guide to getting around Athens and where to stay in this ancient city:

Getting to Athens

From the airport to the city centre, there are two main options. The metro which takes around an hour is a flat cost of 10 Euros per person, or a taxi. The taxi from the airport has a fixed price of 35 euros in the day and 50 at night.

If you’re arriving from the Pireaus Port, you can either take the xx bus which runs 24 hours, the metro line or jump in a taxi for about 20-30 Euros.

Much of the city is highly walkable and especially this one day in Athens itinerary. Even if you need to take a metro, a 24 hour pass is just 4 euros per person, which is very reasonable (but excludes the journey to the airport).

Where to Stay in Athens

If you only have one day in Athens (and one night), I’d make sure to stay as central as possible. Being near to the main sites, and to a metro stop, will really help you maximise your time in Athens.

Syntagma Square is considered the heart of Athens. From here it is walking distance to the Acropolis, but you can also nip there in two stops on the metro too.

Top Things to Do in Athens

Athens is one of the best cities in Europe to explore on foot. Even with just one day in Athens, you’ll be pleased to know you can visit the Acropolis and many of the main historic sites in this time.

The city is of course one of the oldest in the world, and no visit is complete without visiting some of the ancient sites. Even if you’re no history buff, it’s incredible to wander amongst such impressive sites and architecture.

The Acropolis was built in 5th Century B.C and is today one of the most famous Greek monuments. People come from across the world to lay eyes on these impressive ruins, and to explore them in person. The Acropolis is actually a complex of sites, including the Theatre of Dionysos, the Parthenon and the Odeon of Herodes.

In particular, the Parthenon blew me away. Considered a symbol of both Greek democracy (which was born here), and acknowledged as one of the most significant cultural monuments in the world, the Parthenon is something else. Do note however, that ongoing reconstruction efforts are taking place so whilst the monument is beautiful, your view will have scaffolding covering a large portion of it.

One of the best things about the Acropolis is the unbelievable views visitors are afforded. Stretching across the whole city of Athens and towards the Aegean Sea, it is surely breathtaking.

Finally, do not miss out the incredible Panathenaic Stadium which hosted the world’s first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

Aside from visiting historical sites in Athens, the city has several vibrant and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods that definitely have to visited. From picture-perfect Plaka, home to excellent shopping and characterful tavernas, to buzzy Monastiraki Square. Visiting the colourful quarter of Anatofika nestled under the Acropolis is also a must do!

If you’re looking for some green space, don’t miss stopping in the National Gardens near to Hadrian’s Arch and home to the Zappio Palace.

Another area not to miss (and likely you’d be staying near to here too), is Syntagma Square. A great spot for people watching, it is also home to the Greek Parliament building which was built in the mid 1800s. It was originally the residence for King Otto, who was the first monarch of modern day Greece. .Every hour, in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Expect some high kicking – surprisingly from men wearing short kilts.

Places to Eat and Drink

Art Lounge – Exceptional views and truly brilliant food. The Kritharoto is unbelievable and one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life! It’s a kind of risotto, with slow cooked pork, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese and lemon. Just wow!

Just Made 33 – excellent sandwiches and toasties. Location on Google Maps here .

Falafellas – not too far from Syntagma Square, this place makes the best falafel dishes in town. Located on Google Maps here .

Baba au Rum – a cocktail bar you have to visit, especially as it’s listed on the world’s top 50! Located on Google Maps here .

Six Dogs – this awesome inside/outside eatery is very popular with locals and tourists. A great place to eat and drink from day to night. Location on Google Maps here .

A for Athens – Located on Monastiraki Square, this bar has a perfect rooftop location for sunset and Acropolis views. Location on Google Maps here .

Couleur Locale – this bar is popular with locals, partly because they must be the only ones that can find it! I walked past the entry a couple of times before finally realising it’s tucked away location. Great staff and great drinks, I highly recommend. Location on Google Maps here .

48 Urban Garden – a great spot for brunch in, you guessed it, an urban garden. Dine on wooden benches and enjoy delicious food surrounded by vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Google maps here .

For local cafes, I recommend strolling along Ermou, the long road connecting Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Square.

Things to Do in Athens at Night

Rooftop bars are a big thing in Athens, especially since so many of them have incredible views of the Acropolis. There are plenty dotted all over the city and non-hotel rooftop bars will definitely be more affordable.

Later into the night, one of the main areas for locals to go to for nightlife is the Gazi area.

One Day Self-Guided Walking Tour Itinerary in Athens

7.30am: Leave your Athens hotel

Well, with one day you need to get started early. Coffee shops, cafes and bakeries open early at Athens so I’d straight to one to get a freddo cappuccino – an amazing iced Greek coffee. Also, I recommend popping into a supermarket/convenience store and pick up water and morning snacks.

7.50am: Go to the Acropolis

The Acropolis should be the first stop on one day itinerary. Not only does the midday heat make exploring the Acropolis quite challenging, but the crowds that descend on the Acropolis from 10am onwards make sightseeing here almost unbearable.

It opens at 8am, so I’d recommend getting to the gates for 7.50am and being first in line. The ticket booth is located at the south slope, which is also the one you come to from the metro station.

Top tip: Buy your multi-attraction day pass the day before if you can. Just scan your way in at exactly 8am when the gates open. However, note this pass is one-use only so don’t visit the evening before and try to visit again the next morning .

The Acropolis is actually an ancient complex made up of several temples, the most famous of which is the Parthenon. We found 2 hours to be sufficient time at the Acropolis. Make sure to take in the amazing views across the city from up here.

10am: Make your way to Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Zeus

After the Acropolis, head down Amalias Avenue towards Hadrian’s Arch and visit the Temple of Zeus which is located behind. Although it is one of the biggest ancient temples of the Greek-Roman Empire, we actually didn’t need very long to look around here. Maybe 15 minutes maximum.

10.45am: Head to the Panathenaic Stadium

From here, continue along Amalias Avenue and turn left at the end, and you’ll see the epic Panathenaic Stadium. Entry to this stadium isn’t included in the 5 attraction pass, so you’ll need to buy separate entry at the gate. I would say this was 100% worth it and we ended up spending more than hour in the stadium. Between climbing the stands, to running on the track and posing on the podium, we ended up spending a long time here. It was such fun!

12pm: Walk towards Plaka for lunch

Walking back towards Plaka, I recommend walking through the National Gardens. Plaka has some excellent cafes for lunch, although all are open for breakfast and dinner too. We had a great meal at Trattoria in the main square.

Take a browse of the kitsch souvenir shops and stroll along the main shopping street of Adrianou. Don’t forget to get some post lunch gelato!

Plaka can be considered the heart of the old city – in fact, Plaka practically was the city when Athens became the new Greek nation’s capital in 1834.

This area is marked by narrow laneways that weave between Neoclassical mansions, Byzantine churches and traditional tavernas.

2pm: Explore Anafiotika

This cool and hip neighbourhood is literally located in the hillside beneath the Acropolis. We stumbled across it by accident, as we wandered out of the Plaka area. Only afterwards did I realise it was Anafiotika. It’s totally different to the rest of Athens, with whitewashed buildings and brightly coloured doors and gardens. We came across brilliant street art too.

Do be mindful that this is residential area, and people are doing all kinds of normal things like laundry and gardening. I would advise being quite quiet and respectful.

2.40pm: Stop by the Library of Hadrian, the Roman Agora and the Ancient Agora

Visit The Library of Hadrian, the Roman Agora and the Ancient Agora. The latter stop is a particularly interesting attraction in Athens to visit – it’s literally the birthplace of democracy and the first ever House of Parliament.

4pm Cocktails at Monastiraki Square in Athens

Although the square is very famous in Athens, you don’t actually need too long here. The A for Athens bar is located here however, which is great spot for late afternoon cocktails. Nearby is the Monastiraki Market, which is an excellent flea market to spend an hour or so perusing. You can buy all kinds of unusual goods here, as well as plenty of vintage items.

6pm Freshen up back at hotel

You will almost definitely feel the need to shower and freshen up after a full day exploring the city. Wash the dust off and get ready for a lovely evening in the city. Also, if you’re departing Athens early the following morning then use the time to prepare for this too.

7pm Dinner and sunset at rooftop restaurant

Many restaurants in Athens offer spectacular rooftop views of the Acropolis, since it sits on a hill overlooking the whole city. The Acropolis is beautifully lit up and you won’t struggle to find an impressive shot of the ruins.

We chose to have dinner at the incredible Art Lounge in The New Hotel by Syntagma Square, following a recommendation from another travel writer. Well wow, not only was the view spectacular but I had one of my favourite meals of my entire time in Greece here!

Visiting Athens for longer than one day?

If I had longer in Athens, or if I was returning to Athens for the second time, these are the other places I’d visit or activities I’d do:

The Athens Riviera. Did you know Athens has beaches? And gorgeous beaches at that! You can even get to the beaches in Athens on public transport via metro to Elliniko station on Line 2 and then a bus. People don’t even really realise but you could easily spent longer in Athens by combining city and beach!

Athens city hop-on hop-off bus . A great way to see even more of the city, and with a guide sharing lots of unusual and interesting facts. Buy your bus tour tickets here.

Mount Lycabettus. This large hill rises sharply right in the middle of the city of Athens. You can see Mount Lycabettus from all over the city, as it’s the tallest hill in Athens. Yet not so many people choose to climb it. Not only does it offer incredible views, but there’s also a tiny church, Agios Georgios at the summit.

A guided city tour . Whilst it’s liberating and fun to explore the city at your own pace, sometimes it’s great to do a city tour with a local. Not only can you learn about Athens from their perspective, but they’ll always show you hidden spots and share lesser known facts.

Visit the neighbourhood of Exarchia. I didn’t have enough time to visit this district, but it’s known for its bohemian population and leftist views towards the government. I hear its streets are packed with alternative stores, creative art/graffiti and inexpensive tavernas.

Lake Vouliagmeni . This unique lake is a bit of a lesser known gem near to Athens. The lake is known for its healing springs and thermal spa. Impressively, people often swim year round in this lake. Not only does it have wellness benefits, but it’s beautiful too!

The National Archaeological Museum. Definitely somewhere to consider if you have more than one day in Athens, as it can take around 4 hours to visit. It isn’t located close to the other sites in Athens, but it has a comprehensive set of artefacts for history fans.

The New Acropolis Museum. This museum provides another wonderful learning opportunity and to view artefacts that were excavated from the slopes of the Acropolis. It is located just across the street from the Acropolis.

Temple of Poseidon . For some reason, I thought this located right next to Athens. But it isn’t. The Temple of Poseidon is more than an hour’s journey from Athens, so it’s a great one to join a tour. Check rates for tours to the Temple of Poseidon here.

So that’s my complete guide to visiting Athens in one day, as well as a 1 day itinerary for the city. Hopefully this covers everything you need to know before visiting this awesome city. This is a good list for one day however I would not recommend just visiting for just one day. There are so many amazing ruins and Athens is such a great city. I have met so many people over the years that told me to get in and out of it. I, however, could have spent a month here and it may not have been long enough. What’s the best time to visit Zion?

Zion National Park is open all year , but it receives the majority of its visitors in summer and early autumn. In spring (March-May), the spring thaw creates magnificent seasonal waterfalls in the main canyon, but some of the most popular attractions are closed due to the Virgin River’s spring runoff. From June onwards, all sections of the park should be open, but due to the summer tourist season, from mid-May to mid-September, you could end up in unbearable crowds.

The best time to go to Zion National Park is the second half of September .  The weather is still hot, the days clear, and the rivers warm. Moreover, the leaves begin to change in September, leading to some spectacular views. Visiting Zion National Park in November is also a good idea. In October and November, the temperatures are the most pleasant, and if you are particularly lucky, you may even witness the first snow in Zion.

A few facts about Zion

Located in southwestern Utah on the very edge of the Colorado Plateau, Zion National Park owes its beauty to the unique clash of the lush, green high country and the dry desert below. It is a part of the so-called “Grand Circle Tour” , a series of three spectacular national parks: Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park. With its network of breathtaking deserts, tree-covered mesas, and colorful canyons, 84 percent of Zion’s 124,000 acres of extraordinary landscapes is still preserved as untouched wilderness .

It takes about four hours to get from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park, while getting there from Las Vegas takes about two and a half hours.

Follow this guide and make the best of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do on your one day in Zion.

Start Your Trip off at the Zion National Park Visitor Center

When you visit Zion National Park, the first thing you should do is check out the Zion National Park Visitor Center to see which attractions are open and safe to explore. Oftentimes, some areas are closed or dangerous due to potential rockfalls or flash floods. The Visitor Center has a handy information sheet with a detailed hiking guide describing each hike and letting you know how strenuous each activity is. Once you get all the information you need, it will be easier to decide what to do in Zion National Park.

Board the Free Shuttle

Although driving through Zion National Park can be beautiful, first-time visitors will get the most out of their trip by taking the free shuttle bus . Not to mention the fact that during the tourist season, large sections of the park tend to be closed off for private vehicles. The shuttle will take you on a Zion scenic drive up the main canyon, accompanied by an audio introduction pointing out what to see in Zion National Park. The shuttle makes multiple designated stops at trailheads and picturesque viewpoints. Bring the Zion National Park Information Sheet from the Visitor Center with you and get off the bus often to take in the scenery.

Visit the Zion Human History Museum

The Zion Human History Museum is one of the first stops on the shuttle route through Zion National Park. It is primarily a cultural museum with exhibits focusing on the history of the American Indians, early settlers and pioneers, as well as initial conservation efforts which led to the establishment of Zion National Park in 1919. Prior to the 1990s, what is now the Zion Human History Museum served as the previous visitor center. Apart from exploring the museum, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Bridge Mountain Arch and the Altar of Sacrifice.

Make a Short Stop at the Court of the Patriarchs Viewpoint

The Court of the Patriarchs is a group of three adjacent, similar cliffs named after biblical figures Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Although the view is breathtaking, you probably won’t lose too much time here, as the path to reach the viewpoint of the Court of the Patriarchs is very short. There is also a path that leads to the Sand Bench Trail across the road, but you should skip that for now, as the Sand Bench Trail is perfect for that unique Zion horseback riding experience.

Take a Lunch Break at Zion Lodge

Zion Lodge , built in the 1920s, is a rustic, medium-sized hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America, as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation . For the Zion shuttle, this is one of the major stops, with a lot of people getting on and off. When you visit the Lodge, you can choose one of several on-site restaurants for lunch. You should also visit the gift shop and relax under the magnificent cottonwood tree in the middle of the grand lawn.

Zion Horseback Riding

Across the road from Zion Lodge, you will find the horse stables maintained by Canyon Trail Rides for Zion horseback riding on the Sand Bench trail , a commercial horse trail, open between March and October. This trail runs across the middle of an awe-inspiring landslide under The Sentinel peak , one of the most prominent features of Zion National Park. The landslide is in fact a huge section of The Sentinel that broke off and slid down thousands of years ago. In spite of being one of the best things to do in Zion National Park, this trail is quite a bit less popular than some of Zion’s other attractions. Instead of climbing up to the Emerald Pools, go for this underrated gem. Escape the crowds and opt for an unforgettable experience in the middle of Zion’s most unique scenery. Check out the official website for more information. The best thing is, riding a horse will let you save up some energy for the rest of your Zion National Park itinerary.

Proceed to Weeping Rock

After the Sand Bench trail, get back on the shuttle until you reach Weeping Rock . This stop serves as the starting point for a number of exciting hikes including Deertrap Mountain, Hidden Canyon, Cable Mountain, East Rim Trail, and Observation Point. Weeping Rock itself is a famous landmark, a unique rock alcove with springs dripping from above, making it look as if the rock is crying. The phenomenon happens because the lower layers of sandstone have eroded away, and the descending water gets pushed out the side after reaching an impermeable rock layer. It is easily accessible after a short, but steep hike. It takes no more than ten minutes to get there.

Choose One of the Three Strenuous Hikes

Unfortunately, some of Zion’s most famous attractions are pretty hard to reach and it takes hours of hiking to get there. Visiting them all would be impossible if you’re only spending one day in Zion National Park, and you certainly don’t want to get caught in one of these places after dark. Choose the one attraction that is best suited for you when it comes to your physical fitness, or plan in advance based on the information given to you at the Visitor Center.

First Option: Observation Point

Observation Point is one of the most famous viewpoints in Zion. The spectacular view can be reached after a pretty challenging 4-mile hike from the Weeping Rock Trailhead. Although completing the trail can take anywhere between 4 to 6 hours, once you’re at the top, the sense of pride and accomplishment paired with the unparalleled view will make it all worth it.

Second Option: The Narrows

The Zion Narrows are arguably even more famous. The Temple of Sinawava is the last shuttle stop, after which the walls of the canyon start closing in around the Virgin River, which cuts its way through the narrow, deep sandstone labyrinth.

Third Option: Angels Landing

Angels Landing is another classic landmark, with every travel guide listing the hike to the top as one of the most memorable things to do in Zion National Park. Although Angels Landing is one of the most stunning viewpoints anywhere in the world, it is not recommended for anyone afraid of heights, since the path leading there is bordered by long drop-offs, and only a steep, narrow ridge leads to the summit.

Since you will be doing this hike later in the day, choosing Angels Landing or Observation Point may be your best bet. That way, you’ll get to enjoy the sunset from high above the canyon floor, and seeing the cliffs glowing in every possible hue of sandstone will take your breath away.

Stop for Dinner at Springdale

As you’re leaving the park, take the time to stop and explore Springdale , a small tourist town named one of the 20 prettiest towns in the U.S. by Forbes. Originally a Mormon farming community, Springdale is now filled with galleries, quaint hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants. For dinner, check out Bit & Spur Restaurant & Saloon , a well-liked snack bar with contemporary Mexican & Southwestern fare in addition to an impressive selection of craft beers.

Extra tips for visiting Zion

-Make sure to park legally during your stay in Zion National Park. The parking space is limited and parking is only allowed in designated stalls. If you break the rules, your vehicle may get towed. In case all of the designated stalls in Zion are full, you can park in Springdale and take the free shuttle to Zion National Park.

-If you are staying at one of the campgrounds, make sure to make reservations at least three months in advance.

– Educate yourself about the various dangers you may encounter in Zion National Park. There have been accidents involving casualties in Angels Landing, The Narrows, and The Tunnel. Always be careful and prepared.

-Make sure you bring a walking stick if you are visiting the Narrows. The current can get pretty strong, especially as you go deeper. Having a stick will help you maintain your balance and prod the water to check for sharp rocks.

-Bring a pair of really good shoes . The soles should be hard and grippy . Regular sneakers will be insufficient, and you’ll feel the rocks under your feet. You may even hurt yourself.

– On a warm day, you may feel like swimming when visiting the Narrows, and there are a couple of places where you can do so. So, come prepared and bring a swimsuit.

-For longer hikes, bring some food and water with you. You should always have at least an energy bar with you to make sure you have enough energy to walk there and back again.

– Leave no trace . When hiking, you should stay on the trail. Do not touch the rock cairns and do not remove anything from the park. Most importantly, don’t leave any trash behind.

Are you planning a one day trip to Rome, but aren’t sure what to do? You’ve come to the right place!

In this one day Rome itinerary I have outlined everything you need to know to spend an incredible day in the Eternal City.

Including logistics advice like how to get around, where to stay, and what to pack, as well as a detailed step-by-step itinerary and walking route map for one day in Rome.

With its grand architecture, historic centre, ancient sites and delicious local cuisine, Rome is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

It’s a stunning city, with a rich history unlike any other in the world. I’m originally from Milan, but I spent some time living in Rome, so I had the pleasure of experiencing this city both as a tourist and as a local.

Essential information to spend one amazing day in Rome

Before we dive into the details of my step-by-step itinerary for Rome, I want to go over some useful information around logistics to help you plan your trip.

After all, you only have one day in Rome, so it’s important that you know some of these crucial tips, to make sure you make the most of your day.

How to get to Rome

Rome has two main airports, Leonardo da Vinci International Airport – Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA). From there you can then take either a train or bus into central Rome.

Trains can be booked online beforehand on the Italian rail website; Trenitalia , or directly at the station from the kiosk. Bus tickets can be bought directly at the bus, or online beforehand. 

Personally, I always suggest booking your airport transfer beforehand, especially if you’re visiting in busy season, as they can get full pretty quickly, and if you miss it you then have to wait for the next one.

You’re only in Rome for one day, so you want to make the most of them! Not waste time waiting around before you even get into the city. You can book your airport bus transfers below.

How to get around Rome in a day

Rome is pretty big city, but when it comes to the main attractions and historical sights, these are all located close to each other in the city centre, just a short walk away.

I’m a big fan of walking as a mode of transport when I travel, as it allows you to see the side streets and true vibe of a city, way more than you would just driving from one attraction to the next.

This Rome 1-day itinerary is designed to cover all the main highlights of Rome on foot, optimising your walking route, so that you don’t end up marching back and forth all over the city.

If you don’t fancy walking for too long, don’t worry, as Rome offers plenty of options.

My personal favourite way to get around Rome is to use e-scooters, such as Lime. I lived in Rome for months and used them all the time, you’ll find loads parked all the city and they’re great for short distances.

Just watch out for Rome’s cobbled lanes – you’ll be in for a pretty bumpy ride if you take a scooter along one of these!

If you can drive a motorbike, there is also a scooter sharing service called eCooltra, which is a more “serious” way to get around, and you can also go further than with e-scooters.

Rome’s also has a good public transport system, which takes you pretty everywhere around the city. You’ll also find taxis parked all over central Rome.

One thing you MUST do before your day in Rome

Rome is one of the most famous destinations in the world, featuring on pretty much everyone’s travel bucket list. As such, it gets very busy and the queues to enter its main attractions can be huge.

When I was living in Rome I’d walk past the Colosseum or Vatican, and I would see such gigantic queues that it always made me wonder how people ever decided to brave them.

Considering you have limited time and only one day in Rome, you don’t want to waste it queueing outside. If you want to visit the inside of famous attractions, you HAVE to purchase tickets online beforehand.

Ticket prices are a bit higher for skip-the-line privileges, but trust me when I say, it will be well worth the investment. Here are the entrance tickets to some of the most popular Rome attractions.

Where to stay for one day in Rome

Even if you’re only spending one day in Rome, you’ll probably have to spend a night in Rome, either before or after your itinerary.

Choosing where to stay in Rome can be challenging. Personally I would opt for a hotel near the Colosseum , or near the Pantheon , so that you’re close to all the main attractions of Rome.

Having lived in Rome on and off, I tried my fair share of apartment rentals in Rome , and can confidently suggest some over others. I listed below some cool places to stay for every budget.

Best time to visit Rome 

In my opinion, you could visit Rome at any time of the year and have a great time. Being a city, pretty much all the attractions and main sights are visible every month, regardless of the season.

That said, there are some seasons which will make your one day in Rome more pleasant. Spring in Rome is my favourite time of year.

The days are getting warmer and longer, the flowers are blooming, and Rome isn’t inundated by tourists like in summer. If you visit Italy in summer , I wouldn’t personally go to Rome, as it gets extremely hot.

I also really like Rome in winter , as the weather is milder than other places in Italy in winter , and you can do pretty much everything you would do in spring or summer, minus the huge tourist crowds and with a cheaper price tag.

Is one day in Rome enough?

When it comes to planning a Rome 1-day itinerary, this is the million dollar question. Locals will argue that no amount of time will ever be enough to really see a city, especially not one day.

However, having lived in Rome and having also visited as a tourist, I can confidently say that one day in Rome is enough to walk around the city, see the main sights from outside, get a feel for the Roman vibe, and visit the interior of one main attraction.

Realistically, one day isn’t enough to visit both the Vatican and the Colosseum. Not if you also want to wander around the city, see other sights like the Trevi Fountain, and in general spend an enjoyable day.

I’ve seen itineraries online saying you can do both, if you start your day at 7AM and then keep going until nightfall.

While it might be technically possible, do you really want to rush and pack your day in Rome that much?

Personally, I suggest choosing one or the other, so that you can have a more relaxed day. If you want to visit both, you will have to extend your Italy itinerary , and spend more days in Rome ; at least two days in Rome , if not three .

We’ve gone over all the key knowledge you need for your day in Rome, so it’s time to finally dive into what you’ll actually be doing during your Rome itinerary! 

Here is the map of your Rome 1-day itinerary walking route. As you can see, the total walking time is just over two hours, which is easily doable throughout a day.

It gives you plenty of time to stop during the day for photos, to go inside major attractions, to take food and drinks breaks and just generally enjoy your day in Rome.

Now let’s dive into the details of what exactly you’ll be seeing!

Rome 1-day itinerary

Start at the colosseum & roman forum  .

Of all the things to do in Rome in one day, seeing the Colosseum and the Roman Forum have to be top of your Italy bucket list .  

For starters, it’s convenient: the Colosseum ticket allows access to the Roman Forum (and vice versa) so it makes sense to visit both to get the most out of your visit.  

Secondly, they’re right next to each other, so you won’t have to travel far between these two big-hitter sights.

I highly recommend getting a skip the line ticket for the Colosseum , which will also get you the same skip the line access to the nearby Roman Forum.

I spent a few months living in Rome, and every time I walked past the Colosseum there was a really long line. If you only have one day in Rome, you don’t want to spend it queueing.

One tip is to make sure you book your tickets to the Colosseum for an early time slot, so that you can pack the most into your day as possible.

Plus the crowds tend to be slightly smaller early in the day, and you don’t want to waste your day waiting.

Admiring the view over the Fori Romani in Rome

Then it’s onto the famous Pantheon. This is around a 20-minute walk from the Colosseum, or you could hop on a bus (route 85; around 10-15 minutes) to get you there quicker.

I personally recommend the walk, as it will take you past Via Dei Fori Imperiali and the Altare della Patria, two beautiful sights in the heart of Rome.

The original was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa in the reign of Augustus (27 BC to 14 AD). It was later rebuilt by Hadrian around 126 AD.

Take a moment to admire the impressive dome – it’s still to this day the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome! No entrance fee required.

Trevi Fountain

You can’t do a one day in Rome walking tour without stopping by the Trevi Fountain.

It’s an easy eight-minute walk from the Pantheon to the iconic fountain, which will no doubt be busy with visitors, but is nonetheless atmospheric and impressive to see.  

Take your iconic Rome Instagram photos of the gorgeous 18th century Baroque fountain, and don’t forget to throw a coin in (over your shoulder, of course), as is the custom.

Legend has it that if you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, you’ll come back to Rome in the future. Every Rome itinerary should include a trip to the Trevi Fountain, and you don’t have to spend long there, either.

Piazza di Spagna & Trinità dei Monti

Piazza di Spagna is another eight-minute stroll from the Trevi Fountain. It’s one of the most famous piazzas in the city, taking its name from the Spanish embassy which is still located in the square.  

It’s also here that you’ll find the Spanish Steps, a famed meeting point which leads to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top.

This picturesque Renaissance church overlooks the goings-on of the piazza below – and, by a quirk of history, it’s actually the state property of France!

Terrazza del Pincio

Otherwise known as Pincian Terrace, your one day in Rome itinerary wouldn’t be complete without an awesome view over the Roman skyline . It takes around 10 minutes to reach from Trinità dei Monti.  

Part of the sprawling gardens of the Villa Borghese, the 19th century hillside terrace looks out over the rooftops of Rome including the unmistakable dome of St Peter’s Basilica.

If you have spare time, you can spend a while strolling around the park, otherwise it’s onwards to Piazza del Popolo below (you can actually see it from the terrace).

Next stop on your Rome itinerary, is Piazza del Popolo. Though the name translates to “People’s Square”, the name is actually taken from the nearby Santa Maria del Popolo.

This wide-open space has a number of different interesting sights to take in, including an ancient Egyptian obelisk (it dates from between 1290 to 1279 BC !), a grand gate designed by architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and fountains fed by centuries-old aqueducts.  

For many years, the piazza was a place of public executions, the last of which took place in 1826.

You’ll get here by late afternoon, and this might be the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat, or just rest your feet for a while, grab a coffee and do a spot of people-watching.

Castel Sant’Angelo

If you feel like walking, it’s 20 minutes from Piazza del Popolo to Castel Sant’Angelo; it’s a pretty cool walk, as you’ll walk along Tiber River and get to cross over Ponte Sant’Angelo with its many angelic statues.  

The castle tells the tale of Rome from its ancient past to the present day – from being built as the mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family in 123-4 AD, being pillaged by Visigoths, and used as a fortress for the Popes from the 14th century onwards.  

There’s even a secret passageway leading from the Castel Sant’Angelo all the way through the city to St Peter’s Basilica.

Sadly if you’re only spending one day in Rome, you won’t have time to go in, but it’s still an impressive building to admire from the outside.

Vatican City

Of all the places to visit in Rome in one day, the Vatican City should definitely be on the list – after all, this is a whole other country to visit! It’s around a 15-minute walk from Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican.  

As I already mentioned, you won’t have time to visit the interior of both the Colosseum and Vatican in one day. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least admire them from the outside!

If you chose to visit the Colosseum, you can simply visit St. Peter’s Square, a pretty impressive sight in and of itself. You can wander around the square for a bit, and take in the unique sights.

There’s yet another ancient Egyptian obelisk here, not to mention the imposing facade of St. Peter’s Basilica: the centre of the Catholic Church.

If you chose to visit the Vatican, its museums and the Sistine Chapel, you’ll need to purchase a ticket online beforehand . Similarly to the Colosseum, you can get a skip-the-line entry, which I think is well worth the money.

Trastevere by night

After your trip to the Vatican City, you simply have to finish up your Rome one day itinerary in Trastevere.

This is simply a lovely neighbourhood to discover by night, with cobbled streets and lots of cool eateries and bars to discover.  

Especially if you’re visiting Rome in summer , start off with an aperitivo and unwind after your busy day of exploring. Then you can head off for some dinner at one of the many restaurants in the district.

The vibrant Piazza Trilussa, in front of Ponte Sisto, is a meeting place for locals where warm evenings bring crowds and live music, and is a great place to start your night in Rome .

This is also where many Rome by night tours start, like the delicious cooking classes or street food tours.

Final thoughts on 1 day in Rome

This itinerary will allow you to see the famous sights of the Roman Empire and of ancient Rome, as well as enjoying the beautiful architecture and local vibe.

Rome is a city like no other. There’s lots to see, but by the end of this full day exploring it, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what the Eternal City is all about.

Some travellers base themselves in Rome, and from there then go on a day trip to Pompeii or even Capri , but I wouldn’t recommend that. Amalfi Coast is quite far, so stay in Amalfi Coast instead, so that you can properly experience Positano , hike the Path of the Gods , go on boat trips and more! and its beautiful surroundings.

2024 RIIZE FAN-CON TOUR 'RIIZING DAY': Dates, venues, & all you need to know about the rookie K-pop boy group's first concert

O n Friday, April 5, SM Entertainment announced that their rookie K-pop boy group, RIIZE, will be rolling out their first-ever concert series, RIIZING DAY . The currently six-member boy group will be kickstarting their tour from Seoul, South Korea, on May, 2024. They will then continue to make several stops across the world, including Singapore, Tokyo, Jakarta, and Hong Kong.

The tour will most likely roll out following the release of the rookie K-pop boy group's first mini-album release, RIIZING, which is scheduled for April 29. As pre-promotions for the same, SM Entertainment has rolled out the group's much-awaited track, the pre-debut song, Siren . However, another pre-release track is expected to land on the internet.

On April 18, RIIZE is expected to release the prologue single of the upcoming album, Impossible , and fans have eagerly been looking forward to the same. With the group finally rolling out its fan-con tour, which lets fans from several parts of the interact with the members, people have been over the moon.

2024 RIIZE FAN-CON TOUR RIIZING DAY : Dates, venues and more

RIIZE is a seven-member K-pop group that debuted under SM Entertainment in September 2023. Right from their pre-debut promotions, the group garnered a lot of attention from netizens for their energetic performances and catchy tracks.

The group initially had several NCTzens intrigued by the debut due to the re-entry of NCT's Seunghan and Shotaro into the industry. However, the entire group's qualities showcased through their promotional content have netizens, in general, hooked.

What also had several netizens impressed and obsessed with the group was their pre-debut track, Siren , where the members executed a commendable level of performance skills.

Their promising qualities only continued to grow after their debut, where almost all of their release such as Get A Guitar, Talk Saxy , etc., have gone viral on the internet. However, approximately in November 2023, the member Seunghan entered an indefinite hiatus following the break-out of a few controversies . Therefore, from November 2023, RIIZE has been functioning as a six-piece group, until the return of Seunghan.

While the K-pop boy group have thus far rolled out one single without Seunghan's presence, Love 119 , their upcoming first mini-album RIIZING will also be a six-member release. Therefore, the following fan-con tour will only have the six members , Anton, Sohee, Eunseok, Wonbin, Sungchan, and Shotaro, participating.

Given that the upcoming tour stands as the first big-scale project of RIIZE, fans are excited to see what the rookie K-pop group has in store for them. On the other hand, fans have also been expressing mixed feelings regarding the news due to the absence of the member Seunghan .

Jordan Spieth Drains Hole-in-One in Epic Fashion at Valero Texas Open

The Valero Texas Open crowd roared in approval at Thursday's first round on the 16th hole when Jordan Spieth drained his fourth career hole-in-one.

Spieth, who finished one-over 73 on the day, made the shot from 199 yards away on the par-3 16th hole of the TPC San Antonio.

Unlike the crowd, who cheered loudly and celebrated Spieth, the three-time major champion didn't show off a ton of excitement after the shot. He did acknowledge the crowd's enthusiasm by giving a fist pump. He remained calm while he high-fived his partners Hideki Matsuyama and Lucas Glover, along with all three caddies.

Spieth was using a brand new 7-iron on the 16th hole, one he just received after Wednesday's pro-am round. He told media after his round that if it wasn't for the new club, he doesn't think the ace would've happened.

"If I didn't change 7-irons yesterday, then I wouldn't have made it," Spieth said, via PGA Tour. "It's funny."

His last ace on the PGA Tour came in 2021 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, while his previous two aces came in his first year on tour at the 2013 Puerto Rico Open and then in his historic 2015 season at the BMW Championship.
