Though Paihia is just a few hours’ drive from the City of Sails , it feels like it’s light-years away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Paihia serves as a major tourist hub in Northland and as a gateway to other attractions in the region. This beautiful seaside town provides excellent access to the 144 islands and beautiful beaches in the region. It’s no surprise, then, that this part of Northland is known as the Bay of Islands .

From mile-long beaches and forests to places of historic Māori significance, from boutique shops to waterfront restaurants, this little town has heaps of wondrous activities that are sure to please.

Some businesses are experiencing staffing challenges post-COVID. If you want to guarantee a space at a restaurant or attraction, we suggest pre-booking.

Welcome to Paihia Township!

Getting to paihia.

If you’re in Auckland traveling to Paihia , we recommend driving yourself north (as this will allow you to stop along the way), but there are also excellent daily bus services available.

Alternatively, it is possible to fly into Kerikeri (with connections available right across the country). Once you land, you’ll want to hop into a rental car, leaving you free to explore.

Start Your Adventure at Paihia Beach

The Bay of Islands are full of charming beaches – with a range of different features to explore. But while staying in Paihia you should make a little time to enjoy the small stretch of beach at the heart of Paihia town.

The main beach in Paihia is where you’ll go to enjoy a range of water sports. This is also where you will find most tour providers.

If you decide to stay in Paihia (instead of heading out on a tour to the other islands), be sure to put your togs on and spend a relaxing day at the beach. Why not order fish and chips at one of the shops by the beach to make it even more Kiwi?

From this spot, you’ll also find a number of walking trails that lead to fantastic reserves and parks.

28 Marsden Road, Paihia 0200

If you’d prefer somewhere a little more secluded (but don’t want to jump on a boat), hop in the car and head for Te Tī Bay. This lovely bay is a 3-minute drive from Paihia and is a great place to picnic, kayak and camp.

Shopping in Paihia

Paihia hosts a range of boutique shops that carry a range of arts and crafts, gifts, and goodies to buy.

From wood crafts, ceramics, and handmade soaps to hats, clothing, and bags, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to grab a souvenir of your time in the BOI.

We particularly like The Cabbage Tree. There you’ll find bowls made out of kauri wood, handblown glasses, traditional bone carvings and local art. They also have an outlet in Russell that you may like to visit. Both are award-winning stores.

Places to Eat in Paihia

No vacation is complete without good food and fortunately, Paihia has a number of fantastic options.

We particularly like the following eateries:

  • Terra Restaurant – This fantastic restaurant takes advantage of local, high-quality produce. The chefs there continually update their menu, making use of seasonal, subtropical ingredients. For something truly special, check them out.
  • Zane Grey’s Restaurant and Bar – Situated right at the heart of Paihia, Zane Grey’s Restaurant and Bay offers two distinctly different dining experiences, with a view overlooking the beautiful Bay of Islands. They serve a great range of food and drinks with a selection of the best wines. We especially recommend The Aquarium for special occasions.
  • The Tipsy Oyster – Mixing flavours from the Middle East, South-East Asia, India and beyond, the Tipsy Oyster is a real crowd-pleaser! Be sure to swing by when you’re in Paihia.
  • Charlotte’s Kitchen – Another restaurant right on the water’s edge, Charlotte’s Kitchen is modern and fresh. They have an amazing menu, serving up both sharing plates and smaller individual plates, along with delicious pizza and cocktails. Yum!
  • El Cafe – Looking for a casual, tasty meal? Head to El Cafe for quality Mexican-inspired meals (and fantastic coffee too).
  • Just Fish and Chips – Whilst by the ocean, you have to get yourself a quality serving of fish and chips, and Just Fish and Chips is just the place! The waterfront restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining. They use only the freshest caught fish and their hand-cut chips are cooked to the perfect state of crispiness. We also recommend trying their smoked fish pie, mussel fritters and seafood chowder.
  • Third Wheel Coffee Co. – Tucked away in a little lane, Third Wheel Coffee Co. is worth hunting down. They serve incredible homemade cabinet food and some of the best coffee in town.

Adventures on the Ocean

1. join a scenic cruise and explore the bay of islands.

A bay secluded by numerous islands provides just the right protection for all types of water-based fun and adventure.

Spectacular views and stunning scenery make for ideal day cruising on the sparkling blue waters of the Bay of Islands.

From the wharf, there are various options to book a cruise. You’ll find a cruise length and cost to suit your requirements, along with a range of different included activities and dining options.

A boat cruising its way through the clear and turquoise waters while close to a grassy shore.

2. Check Out the Hole in the Rock

The Hole in the Rock is yet another island situated at the end of the Cape Brett Peninsula. It is well known and is visually unique due to its 16-metre high wind-carved hole – it’s even large enough to pilot a boat through!

As the Māori legend goes, brave warriors used to paddle their canoes, letting them pass under the Hole in the Rock before departing to the battle. Water dripping from the cave roof was believed to be a good omen.

If the weather permits, your skipper will take your boat through the opening in the rock. If a droplet lands on you, consider yourself lucky.

We suggest you keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, whales and seabirds throughout your tour.

3. Visit Urupukapuka Island

Urupukapuka Island, the largest in the Bay of Islands, is a preserved recreation reserve and location of historic importance. Naturally beautiful, there is so much to do on this island paradise – it’s definitely worth a visit!

Urupukapuka provides an excellent spot for water sports and fishing. There are also several walking tracks to explore the island on foot. These walking tracks take visitors to historic pā sites, epic viewpoints and countless sublime beaches.

This island is also a bird sanctuary, home to several species of native birds like tūī, silvereye, whiteheads, fantails, pukeko, tomtits, North Island robins, and more! You’re most likely to spot these beautiful creatures during your time on the track.

Camping is yet another activity that can be found on this island. There are camping sites in Cable Bay and Urupukapuka Bay, however, they are zero-waste so you’ll need to take all rubbish back to the mainland with you.

Reaching this island is pretty easy. Water taxis and ferries are frequent from the Paihia Wharf and many day trips swing by.

A couple walking up a grassy hill with a lake and a white yacht is seen behind them.

4. Spot Whales & Dolphins from Paihia

New Zealand’s waters are well known as a migratory route for whales – these waters are home to a variety of different whale and dolphin species. In fact, it is not totally uncommon to spot a whale breaching the water or dolphins playing whilst travelling on a boat in New Zealand – you just need to know where to look.

Board a dolphin and whale-watching cruise from Paihia to get close to these incredible animals. There really is nothing like seeing whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

All the cruises operate under the New Zealand guidelines and halt their propellers to avoid causing trauma to our precious marine mammals.

In addition, most of these trips include a visit to the Hole in The Rock, making a tour extra-good value for money.

5. Head out on an Adventure Cruise in the Bay of Islands

An overnight trip in the Bay of Islands is serious bucket list stuff!

We recommend joining The Rock – this is a completely customised boat that provides blissful hospitality for an overnight adventure in the Bay of Islands. It is suitable for all ages and consists of 22 hours of fun.

Whilst on board you’ll have plenty of opportunities and can choose to be as active or relaxed as you like. Grab a drink, play a game of pool, try your hand at target shooting, go fishing and so much more.

Later on, you can choose to go night kayaking where you’ll be amazed by the bioluminescence in the sea or, if you wish to relax, you can lie back on the deck for a star-gazing session. There’s even an option for a night swim in the sea if you wish to.

Included also on your trip is an island stop (or two), complete with beach cricket, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, snorkelling and a spot of sunbathing. Plus all of your meals and a comfy bed for the night too!

With such an incredible itinerary and the beauty of the BOI, it is truly an experience you won’t want to miss.

6. Join a Sail Ship Excursion

Another way to enjoy the best of the BOI is to jump aboard the “R. Tucker Thompson”, a replica vintage schooner, to explore the Bay of Islands on a half-day trip.

A journey aboard this traditionally built replica of a 100-year-old Northland schooner is one of the most exciting ways to spend your time in this spectacular part of New Zealand. On this trip, you’ll get to hoist the sails, climb the rigging, and a chance to get your hand on the helm – or simply relax, if you’d prefer.

When the ship is anchored in the bay you’ll get to swim in the marine park around the islands. Fresh scones, refreshing tea, and a barbecue lunch are also served on board.

7. Ride the Xtreme Jet

If speed is more your thing, we recommend hopping onto the Xtreme Jet for some serious fun!

With massive twists and turns, you’ll want to hold on tight as you reach speeds of up to 80km/h. Be sure to keep your eyes open though as you zip past stunning scenery.

Jet boats were first designed in New Zealand so it would be practically unthinkable to spend time in Aotearoa without riding in one!

8. Scuba Dive or Snorkel in the Bay of Islands

Known as one of the best places to dive in New Zealand, the Bay of Islands are home to two memorable wreck dives.

The HMNZS Canterbury is found in fairly deep water which provides a new learning opportunity for many divers, whilst the famous Rainbow Warrior carries an intriguing history. Both of these dives are worth checking out.

In addition to wreck diving, the region has a range of awesome scenic dive sites and snorkelling spots.

We’ve been out with  Paihia Dive  and can’t speak highly enough of them!

Get Active in Paihia

9. hike the cape brett peninsula.

Cape Brett is situated just northeast of the historic settlement of Russell.

Though this hike is somewhat challenging due to its hilly nature, it really is beautiful and a highly recommended thing to do in Paihia.

The track begins at Oke Bay, in Rawhiti; it takes you through peaceful native forest and majestic cliffs before ending near the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula.

From Deep Water Cove onwards, the track gets more challenging and becomes quite exposed with steep drop-offs to the sea below. In total, the trail covers 15km.

The area is rich in early Māori history, and the remains of ancient pā sites (fortified villages) are visible at various locations. This makes it a stunning and culturally significant tramp day tramp.

10. Kayak Haruru Falls

The Bay of Islands are home to several picturesque waterfalls and streams. Among these, Haruru is renowned for its unusual horseshoe shape. It is situated right where the Waitangi River flows at its strongest, towards a beautiful lagoon that ebbs its way into the Bay of Islands.

Haruru is very close to Paihia – it’s only 5km from town. If you’d prefer to walk there, you’ll find a walking track from the treaty grounds passing through native forest and mangroves. This trail takes about 90 minutes to walk.

Joining a kayaking tour is an exciting way to explore the wonders of Haruru. All kayak tours start from Waitangi Beach and gradually paddle up through the lagoons in the middle of the forest, covered with mangroves, before taking you right beneath the Haruru Waterfalls. There you’ll feel the impressive power of the Waitangi River. This kayaking trip is perfect for everyone in the family.

Tourists with their kayaks approach the waters of Haruru Falls.

11. Go Cycling in Opua

The towering kauri trees of the native rainforest are what makes Opua so popular among nature lovers. This little haven is located close to Paihia – a short drive is all you need to reach it.

Once there, ride along the Opua-Kawakawa trail. This goes through a vintage railway corridor with stunning marine views out over the mangroves, estuary and rivers.

Sharing the trail with the vintage rail track makes the trip really unique and exciting.

The trail ends at Kawakawa which is also a beautiful town with charming little cafes and shops where you can chill. Whilst there, we also recommend checking out Kawakawa’s are gallery and museum.

Two persons riding a bicycle near the rain tracks and pass in front of a garage with a sign, "Taumarere".

12. Ride the Waves on Horseback

A horseback ride in Wairoa Bay is one of the most unique experiences you’ll find in the region.

Not far from Paihia (in fact, just 5 kilometres from town), your 2-hour ride departs from Waitangi Endowment Forest and takes you on a scenic tour through the forest. There, you’ll learn about the ecosystem of the native forest and its wildlife along with local history and culture from experienced guides.

Once you reach Wairoa Bay, you’ll unsaddle your stead and ride into the waters of the bay. It truly is an extraordinary experience to swim a horse bareback.

Of course, all of the horses provided are well-trained and behaved, making these rides suitable for riders of all levels – even those brand-new to the world of horsemanship.

Enjoy a Dose of History and Culture

13. visit the waitangi treaty grounds.

As the most significant historic site in New Zealand, visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds will take you on a journey back in time. There you’ll learn about the Māori culture and how two groups of people came together in peace – giving birth to a new nation Aotearoa – as we know it today.

Situated at just 3kms from Paihia, Waitangi is where in 1840 a treaty was signed between the British crown and more than 500 Māori chiefs, thus beginning the modern history of New Zealand.

Spending a day in Waitangi is a great way to discover everything that is associated with the events that sculpted New Zealand as a country. It is an opportunity to join an informative guided tour through two museums, a carving studio, meeting house and more. You’ll also get to see the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe (waka) in addition to a live cultural performance.

Aside from the area’s significant historic value, it is also a beautiful place to visit with stunning gardens and views. It even has a mountain bike park and a cafe.

Tau Henare Drive, Waitangi 0293

Did you know? Buying a Waitangi experience pass (valid for 2 days) is the best option to explore Waitangi. This pass offers full access to the site which includes admission to the museums, all the heritage buildings, a 50-minute guided tour, a 30-minute live cultural performance, along with access to the carving studio and native forest.

Two women walks beside a native boat that is parked under a covered porch.

14. Hop on a Vineyard Tour

The Bay of Islands is the birthplace of wine-making in New Zealand, with Rev. Samuel Marden planting the first vines in the country. Later Sir James Busby ended up producing the first New Zealand sparkling wine – even before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Today, the vineyards around Paihia produce some of the most renowned varieties of wines in the world. The perfect sub-Mediterranean weather, soil, and variation in micro-climates of the countryside around the Bay of Islands provides the right conditions to cultivate new varieties of grapes.

On a wine tour, you’ll visit the best local boutique and award-winning winemakers. What’s more, most vineyards are family-run businesses and practice sustainable growing methods.

There are quite a few tour operators who organize wine-tasting trips from Paihia. Each one varies from small bus tours to customised individual tours in private luxury cars. There’s something to meet all your requirements.

Couples spending their time outside a restaurant with wine and a beautiful view of the surroundings.

Do Something Different

15. take on the ultimate challenge – skydive in paihia.

Long stretches of golden sandy beaches, lush rainforests and the clear turquoise water of the region – where better to skydive?

Combine the ultimate buzz with some of the best views in the country when you skydive in the Bay of Islands. Plus, for the adrenaline junkies amongst us – you’ll have the opportunity to jump from 20,000ft – the highest jump zone in New Zealand! That’s higher than Mount Kilimanjaro!

This is an adventure you don’t want to miss whilst in Paihia!

182 Wiroa Road, Kerikeri 0475

Fun Day Trips from Paihia

16. pay a visit to russell.

Russell is a gorgeous seaside town with a significant place in the history of Aotearoa. Not only was it New Zealand’s first seaport and the first European settlement but it’s also right next to the country’s first capital city.

The town’s streets retain the same layout that they had in 1843, whilst many of the town’s historic buildings can still be visited.

Whilst there, we recommend visiting the Duke of Marlborough. This was the first licensed hotel, bar and restaurant in the whole country, and with its beautiful waterfront location, it’s still a treat even today.

Also worth checking out, Pompallier Mission  (which was built in 1842) was a print shop where Church texts were translated from Latin to te reo Māori, then printed and bound ready for distribution.

Should you choose to stay overnight in Russell, there are opportunities in Russell to find our native kiwi bird… you won’t see them during the day though as they’re nocturnal.

Getting to Russell from Paihia is easy – simply jump onboard the ferry connecting the two towns.

17. Enjoy the Ngawha Hot Springs

The healing properties of New Zealand’s geothermal waters are famed and highly regarded.

Calm your tired muscles and relax at the Ngawha Hot Springs (pronounced nga-fa).

There, you will find 16 different publicly accessible geothermal pools – each with their own unique characteristics and healing properties. They have a range of minerals, colours and temperatures – all of which are completely natural.

In addition, the complex has another 8 private pools that are available to book.

303 Ngawha Springs Road, Ngawha, Kaikohe 0473

18. Visit Cape Reinga and Go Sandboarding at Te Paki Stream

Whilst visiting Northland, a trip to the very top of the country is a must-do.

Guided coach tours to Cape Reinga depart from Paihia at 07.00 am every day, taking you on an adventurous trip into the history and culture of the region as you travel through the historic 90-mile beach (where your bus will actually drive on the beach!)

Once you reach the sand dunes of Te Paki stream, you can grab a board and slide down the giant sand dunes. It’s serious fun!

Finally, at Cape Reinga, you’ll get to experience the mighty wind from the Pacific gushing over your face and inhale the salty air where the two water bodies (the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean) collide with each other. Enjoy a walk around the lighthouse before you begin your return journey.

We highly recommend these tours as the perfect blend of fun, culture and natural beauty.

Did you know? According to Māori legend, the northernmost tip of the Cape is believed to be where the spirits of the dead would slip into the ocean to return to their ancestral homeland.

19. Marvel at the Kawiti Glowworm Caves

Glow worm caves are a treasure in New Zealand – they can be found in many parts of the country.

Visiting glow worm caves can be pretty magical. The bioluminescence glow from these tiny wonders of nature sticking onto the roof of the caves is like taking a trip through the galaxy!

The Kawiti Caves are one of the best-kept secrets in the Bay of Islands – they just so happen to be the perfect spot to experience this amazing natural wonder while in Paihia.

These caves are just 20 kms from town so it doesn’t take long to get there. Once at the caves (which are 200 metres long), you can expect a tour to last up to one hour. During this time, you’ll get to witness glow worms spread all across the ceiling of the cave. In addition, your tour guide will explain the life cycle of the titiwai (glow worms) and the rock formations in the cave.

49 Waiomio Road, Waiomio 0243

20. Drive to Kerikeri and Explore This Gorgeous Town

An easy 20-kilometre drive north from Paihia will bring you to the bustling little town of Kerikeri. This town has its own share of historic significance (like the Kerikeri Mission Station and Kororipo Pā) making it yet another place to learn more about New Zealand’s history.

Head along to one of the many boutique wineries, cafes, orchards, boutique shops, historic buildings, beaches and waterfalls – there is so much to see and do in Kerikeri!

Choose to stay overnight or travel there for the day only – either is a fantastic option.

A family walks in front of a white house with a small flower garden and ducks walking on the grass.

With so much to do in Paihia and the region a part of the winterless north, what are you waiting for?

Your next New Zealand adventure is calling.

Paihia is the main tourist town in the Bay of Islands and is filled with awesome activities and fun things to see and do with its stunning beaches, great restaurants, historical attractions and quaint but busy wharf which offers the gateway to the Bay of Islands with its 144 islands. 21 BEST Things to Do in Paihia & Bay of Islands in 2024

Paihia is a beautiful, little town nestled right in the heart of the Bay of Islands.  With its extensive accommodation options, delicious restaurants and numerous other amenities, it is the perfect place to set up base to explore the wider Bay of Islands region.

The Paihia township itself has loads of great activities.  Some of the best things to do in Paihia include visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and taking a boat ride throughout the harbour.

We love exploring the Bay of Islands, whether it’s ticking off the main sightseeing attractions of seeking out hidden gems.  This guide to Paihia & the wider region will tell you everything you need to do to have an unforgettable time in the Bay of Islands.

Table of Contents

Things to do in Paihia

Things to Do in Paihia

Whether you’re a nature-loving explorer or you prefer thrilling adventure activities, the Bay of Islands has you covered.

With crowd favourite attractions typically involving a boat ride or two, getting out on the water is an absolute must in Paihia.  Stunning islands are dotted around the harbour, as well as a wide variety of wildlife.  There’s always something new to find or experience in the Bay of Islands.

1. Explore Urupukapuka Island

Getting out and exploring the islands is certainly amongst the best things to do in the Bay of Islands.  To be fair, it’s kind of the entire reason people visit in the first place!  Urupukapuka Island is the most popular island in the harbour – and for good reason.

To get to Urupukapuka you need to take a boat.  Your best bet is to book a tour or visit the Explore ticketing offices in Paihia.  The ferry only takes about 40-minutes and is painfully priced at $50 for the return trip. Alternatively, if you’re not too worried about the price, book this  tour online with Explore and you’ll get the opportunity to see a few more places.

As you step off the boat onto the jetty, you’ll quickly forget about the $50 price tag as the island is stunning.  Many visitors opt to relax on the beach, either at the cafe (which, quite frankly, serves the worst coffee) or on the sand.  However, the island is covered with walks and we recommend exploring it by foot.  Some incredible views can be found just by taking a short hike.

2. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Arguably New Zealand’s most important historic site, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds are where the country’s founding document, the first accord between Maori and European settlers, was signed in 1840.

The significance of Te Tiriti O Waitangi, and the Treaty of Waitangi, is due to its role in defining Maori rights and land ownership in New Zealand.  Visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is an important activity for tourists and New Zealanders.

The grounds themselves are within an immaculately maintained park with incredible views.  There is a museum here that provides insight into the treaty and what it means, as well as educational exhibits around Maori culture and New Zealand’s history.

3. Go Sightseeing in Russell

Making your way to Russell is a must-do.  This rustic, little town is a very important part of New Zealand’s history.  It was New Zealand’s first seaport, first European settlement and first capital.  The town to this day retains its original layout and many of the historic buildings still exist and are open to visitors.

On top of all this, Russell is a stunning, sea-side town packed full with amazing cafes, restaurants, bars and attractions.  This makes the town conveniently located as a base to explore the region, although we prefer Paihia for this. Check out our guide on the best things to do in Russell for more suggestions!

4. Cruise to the Hole in the Rock

The Hole in the Rock, or Piercy Island, is a famous spot in the Bay of Islands’ harbour.  To get here you will need a boat so your best bet is probably to book a scenic cruise.

Most cruises to Hole in the Rock include a few other stopovers as well as some opportunities to see the local wildlife, including dolphins.  This day cruise by Explore has all that plus a 1.5-hour stopover in Urupukapuka Island.

Hole in the Rock itself is a really stunning rock formation that has developed due to geological processes over many years.  Tours typically take you up close to the hole, sometimes going through it.

There isn’t anything else to do here, so although it’s a cool place to visit, you’ll likely want it to be a part of a larger trip.

5. Eat a Pizza at Hone’s Garden

There are plenty of delicious restaurants in Paihia and Russell, but our favourite was Hone’s Garden.  Set within what feels like a jungle, this unassuming-from-the-street bar and restaurant is serving up some of the best woodfired pizzas in New Zealand.

The pizzas are mouthwateringly good with nice, crispy bases and high quality ingredients, especially for the reasonable price of $20-25.  Hone’s Garden is the perfect place to relax and spend an evening with a few drinks and shared pizzas.

6. Go on a Scenic Flight

There’s no better way to view the Bay of Islands than from the sky.  The views of the islands piercing the turquoise waters of the harbour are breathtaking.

There are a number of scenic flight providers operating out of Paihia.  It is our preference to head up in a helicopter due to the views you get out of the front window.  This tour operated by Salt Air and is a great option that takes you out to see the Hole in the Rock.

7. Take the Local Water Taxi

The local water taxi is a cool example of how transport can adapt to suit the geographic location of residents.  Driving from Paihia to Russell doesn’t make a lot of sense geographically, instead the most effective way to get between the two islands is via the local water taxi.

We reckon this is a fun experience and an awesome way to get out on the water for cheap and see the harbour.  It’s also the best way to see Russell if you are staying in Paihia.  If you are heading to Urupukapuka Island, then consider jumping off the return ferry in Russell then taking the water taxi back to Paihia.

8. Eat Your Way Through the Paihia Restaurants

The restaurants in Paihia are one of the main reasons we recommend staying here instead of Russell or other nearby towns.  Not only are there good food options, but you also have the opportunity to eat at restaurants with views over the harbour.

Charlotte’s Kitchen is a popular institution located at the end of the jetty out on the water.  Terra is a delicious upscale eatery.  Further back you also have a variety of fish ‘n chip shops, chinese restaurants and pizza shops.

9. Kayak and Photograph Haruru Falls

Checking out Haruru Falls is one of the best free things to do in Paihia.  This wide and powerful waterfall is where the Waitangi river flows into a lagoon.  The spot can be easily driven to with a short, 5-minute walk through a park.

Haruru Falls are popular with scenic photographers, and although we feel the essence of the Bay of Islands is out on the ocean, this waterfall certainly is impressive.

Another great option is to rent a kayak or join a kayak tour and head out into the river yourself (from downstream, obviously) and check out the falls from the water.

Haruru Falls.

10. Check Out the Views From the Golf Course

The Waitangi Golf Course is a popular place to visit for avid golfers.  However, as it turns out the views from the golf course grounds are incredible!  And it’s also free to drive up through the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and stop off on the Golf Course’s grounds to check out the view and snap some pics.

11. Visit Cape Reinga & Ninety Mile Beach

The northernmost tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga, is a magical place with breathtaking scenery.  It is a theme park for landscape photographers and is really worth visiting if you’ve made it this far north already.

There isn’t a lot around Cape Reinga by way of towns so our preference is to make the drive up as a day trip while staying in Paihia.  Likewise, if you’re making this trip up you may as well check out some of the sites along the way, in particular Ninety Mile Beach and the gigantic sand dunes.

12. Ride the Twin Coast Cycleway

Pou Herenga Tai, or the Twin Coast Cycleway, is a scenically beautiful coast-to-coast journey from the famously beautiful Bay of Islands to Hokianga Harbour.

Tackling this great ride will take 1-2 days as you traverse 84km of on and off-road cycleway.  Overall, the track is rated as easy with a generally flat gradient which makes it suitable for most riders.

13. Join a Scenic Paihia Cruise Through the Harbour

After viewing it from the air, the next best way to explore the Bay of Islands is from the water.  If you have your own boat, then that’s one way to get out there, but for most of us our best option is to book a cruise.

We recommend booking either the Hole in the Rock Cruise or this Island-Hopper Cruise with Explore.  Both get you out on the sparkling, blue waters of the Bay of Islands, allow you to explore the gorgeous islands and see the incredible wildlife.

Paihia Scenic Cruise.

14. Explore the Paihia Shops

Paihia is a small town, but it does have a few nice-to-have amenities.  You’re not going to find any high street shops or multi-story shopping malls in Paihia.  Instead, take the opportunity to go for a wander around the township.

Explore the lovely eateries, bars and cafes.  Take a gander in Paihia Bookshop and check out Flying Fish Design Store and The Cabbage Tree for souvenirs to take back home.

15. Eat Fish ‘n Chips on Paihia Beach

It doesn’t get much more kiwi than this, but eating fish ‘n chips on the beach at sunset is quite literally the best thing you can do anywhere.  No one can debate that.

Paihia Beach is a lovely spot and is located right across the road from all the eateries in town.  We ate at Ocean’s 68 Takeaways and the fish was fresh and the chips crispy – what more can you ask for?

Paihia Sunset.

16. Walk the Paihia School Road Track

The Paihia School Road Track is a pleasant walk that meanders through a lovely forest to the Opua Forest Lookout.  The walk is quite easy and only takes about an hour.

At the lookout you get to be rewarded with a view so stunning you’ll feel like you didn’t walk far enough to earn it.

17. Swim With Dolphins

Paihia is one of the most popular places to swim with dolphins in New Zealand.  In the Bay of Islands you are most likely to come across either the Bottlenose or the Common dolphin.  The Bottlenose Dolphins are the playful ones that you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for.

Going on a dolphin cruise and taking the opportunity to swim in the water near these mammals is a memorable activity.

18. Camp at Urupukapuka Campsite

Two of our favourite activities in Paihia are visiting Urupukapuka Island and camping, so why not do them both together?  The Bay of Islands contains numerous stunning campgrounds, many nestled within beautiful harbours.  The Urupukapuka campsite is one such campground, located on a gorgeous beach on Urupukapuka Island.

The campsite is run by DOC so don’t expect luxury, but you can rest assured that there are functional toilets, showers and untreated tap water.  Also, bear in mind that this is an extremely popular campsite so you’ll want to book early.

Camping in Bay of Islands Urupukapuka

19. Visit Kerikeri

Kerikeri, the largest town in Northland and the homeground of the infamous Hongi Hika, is a town known for its colourful history, easy-going lifestyle and many attractions.

A visit to the Stone Store and Kemp House, which were built by European missionaries with the support of the local iwi in the early 1800s, is a must-do.  Nature-lovers can also make their way to the beautiful Rainbow falls.

20. Climb Through Glow Worm Caves

On the dive back to Auckland, consider stopping off at the Waipu Caves near Whangarei.  These glow worm caves can be a bit wet and muddy, but they’re a fun way to explore some caves and see the glowworms – not to mention it’s free.

The Kawiti Glow Worm Caves are a lot closer to Paihia and are a major attraction operated by an experienced team, however access is by guided tour .

Glow worms in Paihia.

21. Hop on a Vineyard Tour

New Zealand is renowned for some of the best wines in the world with numerous wineries dotted across the country.  Within the Bay of Islands, top wineries include Paroa Bay Winery and Omata Winery.

A little further out from Paihia, some popular choices are Ake Ake Vineyard and Marsden Estate Winery.

Best option is to delegate a sober driver, but if that’s too hard you can book a guided winery tour .

Paihia Accommodation

We selected Paihia as the best place to set up base in the Bay of Islands in large part due to the wide range of amazing accommodation in Paihia.  It doesn’t matter what your budget is, Paihia will have a hostel, holiday home or hotel for you.

Haka Lodge Paihia is our favourite place to stay in Paihia.  The accommodation here is affordable for couples looking for a private room, or solo travellers looking for dorms.  The best part about Haka Lodge is the view from the common area.  Despite being a backpackers, the location and view are 5-star.

Sea Spray Suites is our top mid-range pick thanks to its super convenient and stunning beachfront location within walking distance to Paihia.  The rooms are nice and modern as well.

How to Get to Paihia

Getting to Paihia involves a 3-hour drive north from Auckland.  You will most likely want to make this trip by car with numerous options for rentals in Auckland.

We recommend most travellers to tackle this as a road tip and to consider checking out some of the sights and attractions along the drive from Auckland to Paihia or vice versa. Mangawhai , one of our favourite beachside towns, is located about halfway to Paihia from Auckland – it’s well worth a visit to break up he drive!

Best Time to Visit Paihia

The best time to visit Paihia is during Summer, which is when the weather is nice and warm.  This is the perfect time to explore the Bay of Islands, getting out on the water and enjoying the outdoors.

This is also the busiest time of the year to visit Paihia, so it’s worth bearing this in mind and booking in advance.  Weekdays will also be a great way to avoid the crowds of Aucklanders that flock to the Bay of Islands.

Are the Bay of Islands and Paihia Worth Visiting?

Paihia and the Bay of Islands are one of New Zealand’s best, natural treasures.  The North Island has few scenic locations that can rival the South Island, and the Bay of Islands are one of them.

In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the Maori and Europeans, marking New Zealand’s beginning as a nation. The historic Treaty House at Waitangi is close to Paihia township, which has great cultural significance. There are many walks in the area, with a popular hike on the boardwalk to Haruru Falls, which showcases an impressive waterfall.

Across the Bay is the historic village of Russell, once known from its whaling days as the ‘Hell hole of the Pacific. Today it offers a more relaxed atmosphere with lots of history. It also has the oldest licensed pub in New Zealand. Just 20 minutes drive is the town of Kerikeri with its many vineyards and is known for its horticulture with a market day on a Saturday where you can buy fresh produce and local handicrafts. Nearby is the Kerikeri basin with two of New Zealand’s most historical buildings, ‘The Stone Store’ and ‘Mission House’.

14 of the Best Things to do in Paihia

NZ Adventure guide Disclaimer

Paihia is a small but lively town located in the Bay of Islands, in Northland, New Zealand. Paihia’s wide range of things to do, accomodation and restaurants makes it the perfect place to spend some time on your next trip up north.

It may not be as well know as the other tourist hubs in New Zealand such as Queenstown or Rotorua, but this fun little town certainly has everything you could want and more. Adventure filled activities, stunning beaches and relaxing walks, there is something to suit everyone.

Swimming with the dolphins in Paihia

Where is Paihia?

Paihia is located in the heart of the Bay of Islands, just over a three hour drive north of Auckland. Its northern location makes it a great summer escape for those looking to escape the city and find some fun things to do.

While it is not the biggest town in Northland, Pahia is certainly one of the most popular due to its ever increasing option for things to do. Near by towns include Whangārei, Kerikeri and of course Russell and Waitangi.

Paihia is also the place to be for those who want to get out and explore some of the 140 subtropical islands in the area, with ferry boats and tours visiting many of the popular islands.

Does Paihia Have a good selection of things to do?

Being the gateway to the Bay of Islands, Paihia is one of the busiest towns in Northland. With such a large number of people visiting the area new tours and things to do are constantly popping up in Paihia to cater to the thousands.

Activities by water, land and air, Paihia has something for everyone.

Not only are the paid activities in Paihia awesome, but so are the many free things to do. You can enjoy one of the local walks, relax at the beach or admire one of the powerful near by waterfalls.

Combining all of this, there will never be a chance of running out of things to do, making Paihia well worth visiting for everyone.

Getting out on the water is one of the best things to do in Paihia

Things to do in and near Paihia

So what are some of the best things to do in Paihia? Do you want to make the most of nature? Maybe explore as much of the area as you can? Or even just take your time and spend your days relaxing?

Check out the incredible options below and start planning your epic trip to Paihia.

A Boat Tour – most family friendly thing to do in Paiha

Exploring the Bay of Islands by boat is one of the best ways to see a whole lot in a small amount of time. There are plenty of options when it comes to boat tours including half day and full day trips.

One of the most popular things to do is a boat tour leaving from Paihia to see dolphins in the wild. Cruising around many of the local islands you will get to see the popular ‘Hole in the Rock’ and Cape Brett Lighthouse.

Look out for local wildlife including dolphins, whales and seals. Bookings for this tour is available through Fullers Great Sites .

Another great option for a good time on the water is booking a sailing tour. Spending the day sailing gives you the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure and lets you get a bit more involved with group.

Barefoot Sailing Adventures is my recommendation for the perfect day out. On this tour you visit a local island where you can enjoy snorkelling paddle boarding or just spend some time exploring the area.

Exploring the Bay of Islands by water is one of the best things to do in Paihia and is something that should not be missed.

Check out Oke Bay

Oke Bay is a bit of a local secret compared to the other things to do in Paihia. While the beach itself isn’t directly in Paihia it is an easy enough drive to get there and is one of the best beaches in the area.

This beach has some of the most stunning coloured water in the area and is a bit more sheltered than some of the other beaches. The water gets deeper quite quickly giving it a glassy green sort of colour.

There is only a small sandy area to lay down on so it is better to check this beach out at low tide if you want a bit more space on the beach

You can get to Oke Bay by catching the 10 minute  car ferry  from Opua to Okiato then driving for just another 30 minutes. Park up on the side of the road and from there it is just a 5 minute walk over the hill and down to the beach.

Oke Bay is free to visit and and is great for the whole family. The perfect thing to do for anyone wanting a beautiful beach near Paihia.

Enjoying the water at Oke Bay

Explore Urupukapuka Island

Urupukapuka Island is the largest island in the Bay of Islands and is a great place for visit for those looking for things to do in Paihia.

With a relaxed and laid back vibe, visitors to the island can spend their time on the island relaxing on the beach, heading out on a walk or checking out the local wildlife. There is also a restaurant and bar to enjoy and you can hire out a kayak or SUP.

Urupukapuka Island is well known for its crystal clear water, golden sands and lush greenery. It truely is a mini paradise for all who visit and one of the best things to do in Paihia.

If Urupukapuka Island sounds like something you would like to do, you can catch the ferry to the island from Paihia in 40 minutes. In summer, the ferry departs from Paihia five times a day allowing more flexibility with travel times.

Urupukapuka Island

Pop over to Russel – most popular thing to do in Paihia

A trip over to Russell is by far the most popular thing to do in Paihia. A short ferry ride across from Paihia this quaint little town was once the capital of New Zealand. Many of the original buildings have been maintained, giving the town its charm.

Start off by checking out all the cool little shops scattered around town followed by a walk up the Flagstaff hill walking track for 360 degree views.

End your day with a drink and some food at the Duke of Marlborough, the oldest pub in New Zealand, and enjoy the sound of the ocean water as the sun sets in the distance.

Russell may be a small town but it does have a uniqueness about it which makes visiting it a great thing to do as a day trip from Paihia.

Experience the Waitangi Treaty grounds

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are a very important part in Aotearoa’s history and in how the country came to be the way it is today. This is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and the site now serves as a museum and education centre.

A trip to the Waitangi Treaty Gounds is the best cultural experience available and a uniquely kiwi thing to do in Paihia. It not only allows you to learn about the significance of the area but also but also gives you an insight in Māori culture.

Just a short drive or walk from Paihia, admission the Waitangi Treaty Grounds includes access to all facilities and activities including heritage buildings, museums, carving studios and tours.

Visit the Waterfalls near Paihia -best free thing to do

There are two well known waterfalls you can visit near Paihia that are both great things to do. They are both very different but still both very popular for varying reasons.

Haruru Falls is the closest to Paihia and can be accessed either by driving or by walking the 5km walkway starting in Waitangi.

The falls are on the smaller side but still worth the visit as coupled with the surrounding area it is a really enjoyable spot. There is a view point about 50 meters from the road where you can take photos and enjoy the power of the waterfall.

The other popular waterfall in the area is Rainbow Falls (Waianiwaniwa) in Kerikeri. Visiting this waterfall is one of the best the best things do do if you don’t mind a bit of a drive from Paihia to get there.

This 27 meter high waterfall has three awesome viewing platforms to enjoy the falls from a few different spots. You can also walk down to the bottom of the falls where there is space to sit and swim. There is a large cave behind the waterfall you can climb into, which is a cool and unique thing to do.

Rainbow falls is a great day trip from Paihia

Day trip to Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga is the northern most point in New Zealand and only a 3 hour drive from Paihia. Where the Pacific meets the Tasman, this spot is a great option if you are looking for something to do while in Paihia.

Cape Reinga is quite well built up for visitors to get the best out of the experience. There is a walkway that connects from the large carpark right through to the lighthouse and view point.

If you aren’t able to make the drive up yourself, there is an option to book onto a tour that will take you on a bus there. This tour will also take you onto Ninety Mile Beach and to see the Te Paki Sand Dunes.

It does take a bit of effort to get to Cape Reinga but it is such a rugged kiwi landscape that it makes it a highlight many out of the things to do in and around Paihia.

Cape Reinga

Hike to the Opua Forest Lookout

The walk up to the Opua Forrest Lookout is a great short walk from Paihia. Taking just over and hour return this walk is great from an early morning or afternoon activity.

To get to the lookout you will follow the Paihia School Road Track all the way up to the top. The walk is almost all uphill and while the track is well maintained it is not recommended for people who may struggle walking.

Once you made it up you will be treated to a stunning view out over Paihia to Russel, Cape Brett and the many islands in the distance. The native trees and wildlife in this area is also a highlight of this walk.

Hire a Kayak or SUP

If you are looking for a cheap but fun thing to do in Paihia then hiring out a kayak or a SUP is the perfect activity for you.

Hire for kayaks and SUPs is available on the beach right beside the information centre in the main township. Timing options range from just one hour right up to the whole day so you can cater to what suits you on the day.

The flat waters in the bay make the conditions perfect for anyone of any skill level to give it a go. You can also take a ride up the estuary and check out Haruru Falls from the water.

Just exploring up the beach a little is great escape from the business of the town and there is no better way to do it than on the water.

Hiring a SUP is a great thing to do while in Paihia

Hike the Cape Brett Walkway

The Cape Brett Walkway is an epic 16 kilometre walk that weaves along the coast and over the rugged native coastline. It certainly is not for everyone but it is an amazing thing to do near Paihia if you are into that sort of thing.

Along the walk you will always be treated to an amazing view whether it be in the native bush or views up the coastline. There are also a few bays where you can stop and jump in the water to snorkel or just swim.

This walk does take 8 hours and is quite challenging so having a good level of fitness and coming prepared is very important. Make sure to check the conditions and have a look at the DOC website for any track closures before you go.

Try the local beer at a Brewery

After a busy day exploring Paihia, there is nothing better to do than enjoy a nice cold glass of beer at a nearby brewery. Us Kiwi’s love our beer and certainly appreciate good one.

PhatHouse Brewing Co is by far the most well known brewery in the area and is a pretty busy spot, full with locals and visitors alike. It is located a little drive out of Paihia in Haruru, but is worth the effort to get out there.

There is a large variety of beers available in bottles and on tap to choose from. You can also grab a bite to eat from the selection of wood fire pizzas.

If you are wanting something more local to Paihia, Craft Beer Kitchen in the main town, or Hone’s Garden in Russell are both great spots for a good craft beer but are not brewery’s.

Go Parasailing

If you are looking for a small dose of adventure while you are in Paihia, then parasailing is the thing to do. You are able to book the activity and go up by yourself, in a pair or sometimes as a trio, enable everyone to join in on the fun if you are a in a group or just a solo traveller.

You will be picked up by boat in Paihia and taken out into the bay where you get ready to go and then hoisted up into the air. The 360 degree views from this height are unforgettable and you get the small added adrenaline rush from being up that high.

Another awesome thing about parasailing is that it is something the whole family can enjoy. Minimum weight is 20kgs and those that are a little scared may be able to jump on the boat and observe from there if there is space.

There is only one provider to choose from in Paihia, Flying Kiwi Parasail also known as Bay of Islands Parasail. Bookings are required so mach sure you lock in your spot and get ready to enjoy this awesome experience.

Parasailing is always a fun thing to do in Paihia

Visit the Parrot place – most unknown thing to do in Paihia

A 30 minute drive out of Paihia and close to Kerikeri, you will find the hidden gem that is The Parrot Place. The walk-in subtropical aviaries house around 300 birds from all over the world. Not only is the Parrot place a bird park but they also have successful breeding programs.

There are larger breeds of parrots that are very inquisitive and love to interact you as well as smaller varieties that you are able to feed and hold.

The Parrot Place is not too well known and is a great thing to do if you are looking to get away from the crowds of tourists for the day and have a fun and unique experience while you are in Paihia.

Check out their website for pricing and opening hours.

Try Sky Diving – most adventurous thing to do in Paihia

Sky diving is by far the most intense, adrenaline filled thing to do in Paihia. If sky diving is something you have always wanted to do, then there is no better place than Paihia.

Skydive Bay of Islands is the local provider and offer. wide range of choices when it come to the different jump heights. The smallest starts of at 9000 feet, with a 20 second free fall and the largest is a massive 20 000 feet, with a 85 second free fall.

When is The best time to visit paihia?

Paihia is most popular in the summer as most of the things to do in the area rely on good weather to be more enjoyable. December through to January are the official summer months but the weather generally stays warm all the way through to late April.

Paihia in the summer can sometimes be a bit over crowded, mainly through the Christmas and New Year break. If you can, it is recommended to avoid visiting this time of year and instead try going in February when the crowds have gone.

A lot of the things to do in Paihia are only open in the warmer months, so the town can be quiet once it gets colder again. However, if you are looking for a wintery beach side escape then Paihia could be a good option.

How to spend a trip to the Bay of Islands – Paihia and beyond

tourism in paihia nz

How long to visit the Bay of Islands for?

Dedicate at least 3-4 days to a Bay of Islands trip, my itinerary tips will show you how you can easily fill this time.

I actually spent 8 nights in the Bay of Islands , probably more than most opt for. I wasn’t on a tight schedule and was sticking around for a running race. This meant I had a good amount of time to explore, relax and all over experience this beautiful area of New Zealand – if you’ve got time to spare, it is worth staying a week or so.

Where to stay?

Paihia: The town of Paihia  was my base for this part of my travels, and one which I would recommend to explore the area from. It is a gateway to the islands and also a good middle ground for exploring further north or even south.

A predominantly tourist town, in peak summer it tends to be bustling with visitors. When I went in November, however, it was neither overly busy nor too quiet, creating a good travel atmosphere.

tourism in paihia nz

How to get to Paihia?

Intercity bus  from Auckland, unless you have a car to road-trip it. The bus takes just under 4 hours and was my go-to in this instance seeing as I already had an Intercity pass (it is the cheapest public transport option though).

Accommodation?

Backpacker budget: The hostels in Paihia mostly have a relatively high rating, so whichever you choose you shouldn’t be too disappointed.  Kings Road  is the hub of backpacker hostels  in Paihia – there are ample to choose from on this one street. Hostelworld or Booking.com are my favoured sites for finding the most suited budget option.

Bay of Islands Lodge (formerly YHA Bay of Islands Paihia ) was my accommodation choice. This one wouldn’t be the Queen B of Paihia hostels, although it was certainly nice enough. I had a discount card for there hence my choice!

Itinerary tips – What to do in and around Paihia:

Using my own experience as a guide, here are some tips/ideas of what to do on a trip to the Bay of Islands.

Paihia

Paihia beach  – take some time to relax on the beach.

Wander around the town centre.

Bay of Islands i-SITE Visitor Information Centre  – Check out the spot where you will find all information for tours, what to do, and which is also the location of the ferry port  which you will want to access for day trips.

tourism in paihia nz

Explore along the coast from Paihia:

Waitangi direction  – I went for a scenic run from my accommodation along the coast in the direction of Waitangi, to the beginning of Harura Falls Road. Of course you don’t need to run it, this would make for a lovely walk and take you past the  Waitangi Treaty Grounds . I did not actually visit the Treaty Grounds, there is a fee to enter and I wasn’t feeling it, but if you are, a trip into the grounds is a great activity option.

Take a look here and see if you are inspired for such:

Want to go further? Continue on to Harura Falls  afterwards (a 90 minute walk one way from the Treaty Ground, or around 4 hours return walk from Paihia – I was both busy and too exhausted to make my way to the falls on feet, but check it out if you’re up for it, or for sure if you have transport).

Opua direction – Paihia-Opua Coastal Walkway

Explore in the opposite direction from Paihia by taking a walk to Opua, or as far along as you wish, the walkway providing a beautiful coastal route.

tourism in paihia nz

Dedicate a few hours or half day to Russell , a town with much historic importance, located just across the water from Paihia, accessible by a 15 minute ferry ride.

Explore the main centre

Wander the streets and take in the history – see the oldest surviving church in New Zealand, Christ Church.

Stroll along the shore front beach, stop for some food or drinks at one of the lovely restaurants or cafés – Russell would be lovely as a lunch/dinner/drinks or a sunset spot.

tourism in paihia nz

Flagstaff Hill Track

Undertake the short walk to the summit of Flagstaff hill for panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. On seeing the expanse of striking blue water, along with the abundance of islands, boats and the surrounding lush greenery, the small climb is instantly made worth it.

tourism in paihia nz

Oneroa Bay (Long Beach)

Head to the beautiful Oneroa Bay (Long Beach). A great spot for relaxing, swimming or even a beach walk. Just   a 20 minute walk over the hill from the ferry port.

tourism in paihia nz

Note, there is the option to do a 1 hour sightseeing tour by coach from Russell Wharf . Russell is easily explored on foot, however should you wish to do a tour here is one for you to check out:

Whangarei + Waipu

Spend a day chasing waterfalls, caves and beaches with a road-trip  further south from Paihia for the day. (I met someone with a car which made this possible on my car-less visit, although did actually hitch-hike back to Paihia so that’s always a possibility too!)

Otherwise this is a good option if driving from Auckland to Paihia to stop off on the way, or the return journey.

 – Whangarei Falls  (55 minute drive from Paihia)

– Waipu Caves  (1.5 hrs from Paihia)

–  Waipu Cove beach (25 minutes from Waipu Caves)

tourism in paihia nz

Urupukapuka Island

Immerse yourself in the beautiful tranquillity of the Bay of Islands by taking a day trip to Urupukapuka Island, the largest island on the Bay of Islands. Just a 40 minute ferry ride from Paihia. It is paradisical from the onset and was one of my favourite trips in New Zealand! Check out my post here for more information on a visit to this island.

tourism in paihia nz

If wanting to spent more time on the water, discovering a little more around the bay itself, there are various boat trips that will allow you to do that which include a stop off at Urupukapuka Island:

Cape Reinga

Explore further north, taking a day to travel to the picturesque top of New Zealand – Cape Reinga.

I chose to do a day tour from Paihia to Cape Reinga. This included stops at some key Northland sights on the way to Cape Reinga. I really enjoyed it, although it was quite expensive. Check out my post here to find out more about this trip.

Ideally, if you have a car, or find someone with a car, road-trip it. Hiring a car could be a great shout if there are a few of you. Even make it into a greater tour of Northland with a couple nights or more stop-over en route to explore some more. You will most likely have to rent the car from Auckland, take a look here to see your options:

I wish I had had more time to take in the beauty of this area of Northland. Tours of course run on a relatively tight schedule, but the tour was the best option for me at this point and I am glad that I did it.

tourism in paihia nz

Kerikeri

Around a 20 minute drive from Paihia is Northland’s largest town, Kerikeri .

Buses here are infrequent, and don’t make it easy to give it a visit without a car.

It is a nice town with waterfalls, walks and historic sites. I didn’t actually get the chance to experience these or the real charm of this town – I made it here at one point for only a few hours, lacking time and energy to really explore as I had just run 21.1km!

That brings me to my final tip of what to do around Paihia. This one requires some fitness and to be in the area at the right time – run the Kerikeri Half Marathon !

So, I did something a little different than the average traveller on a Bay of Islands trip – I ran the Kerikeri Half Marathon (signed up 6 days in advance when I realised I would be in the area!). So, if your travels coincide accordingly and you’re crazy enough (I’m a runner, not just super crazy), I highly recommend this race. The best way to keep fit when travelling! I loved it, the locals were out providing support and there was even someone playing bagpipes at one point along the way (what an encouragement as a Scottish gal). Really though, what a way to explore the Northland countryside – 13.1 miles of rolling hills starting in Okaihau and ending in the town of KeriKeri.

tourism in paihia nz

So, that is how I spent my time in and around Paihia. That could for sure be compressed into less days than the time I was there for.

It is easy to both keep busy and also relax when in the Bay of Islands. The whole of my last day in Paihia was spent being happy to just chill at Paihia beach. I planned my next travel move after a busy week of walking/exploring/tours/running! I didn’t really want to leave because Paihia was feeling homely after 7 nights, but the road was calling.  Having extra time to chill out here was so nice. It allowed me to get a good feel for, and appreciate this area of New Zealand even more.

I would definitely go back to the Bay of Islands and fully recommend putting it on your North Island itinerary!

11 things to do in Paihia for free

  • March 25, 2020

Home » 11 things to do in Paihia for free

One of the great things about New Zealand is how much you can do that’s free – and that goes double for Paihia in the Bay of Islands, where natural beauty and wide-open spaces abound. We caught up with some locals to ask about their favourite free and cheap activities, then collected their tips into this handy list. It’s a great resource for anyone who wants to save money as they travel around the Bay of Islands – or for those who simply want to reserve cash for splashing out on big-ticket experiences.

11 free activities in Paihia

  • Visit Haruru Falls
  • Catch the amazing view from the golf course
  • Become an eco-volunteer
  • Tackle an ocean swimming circuit
  • Swim with stingrays
  • Ride the Twin Coast Cycleway
  • Catch your dinner like a local
  • Walk from Paihia to Opua
  • Take the kids to Oneroa Bay
  • Experience historic St Paul’s Church
  • Laze at the beach!

1. Walk to Haruru Falls and swim in the river

One of the easiest and most popular free experiences in Paihia is the walk to the pretty Haruru Falls. While certainly not the world’s highest waterfall – they stand a mere 5 metres – they make up for their short stature with their width, spanning the river in an elegant horseshoe.

The drive from Paihia to see the falls is an easy 10-15 minutes, then from the car park to the falls it’s a two minute walk, so this is accessible to everyone. The pool at the bottom of the falls also makes for a pleasant swimming spot on a hot day – though in late summer the falls and pool can run almost dry. They’re generally most spectacular after rain.

2. Take in the views from the golf course

A regular visitor to the Bay of Islands, Boris Sokratov recommends one of the simplest pleasures – taking in the view from near the golf course at Waitangi. “I always drive up there to gaze out to sea. The food at the club last time I was there is pretty good and inexpensive too.”

3. Save rare wildlife with Project Island Song

Want to give something back as part of your visit to the Bay of Islands? A great way to contribute is volunteering with Project Island Song – a conservation group dedicated to bringing the sound of New Zealand’s rare native birds back to the islands and forests around Paihia.

There are loads of ways volunteers can help, from the tough, physically demanding work of weeding on the islands, to becoming a roving ambassador who educates visitors on the importance of biosecurity. Check out Project Birdsong’s volunteer roster to register your interest.

4. Test your fitness on an ocean swimming circuit

Did you know that ocean swimming is a big deal in Paihia? It may be a niche sport elsewhere, but in the Bay of Islands both competitive and just-for-fun swimming in the big blue is a serious business. Training meet-ups happen weekly so if you’re keen to have a go – and talk to some experienced competitive ocean swimmers – head to the section of the beach opposite Al Frescos bar and restaurant. There you’ll find a 900 metre triangular swimming course marked out in yellow buoys. There’s also a course map on the back of the shed at Bay Beach Hire.

5. Swim with stingrays at Wairoa Bay

This tip comes courtesy of Paihia local Elizabeth Glover who runs a horse trekking business . One of her favourite places to take riders on hot summer days is Wairoa Bay where they swim the horses to help them cool off – but it’s not just the horses who enjoy the shallows.

“It’s a lovely swim and snorkel spot,” says Liz.  “And it’s great at low tide because you can just put your feet down and reach the bottom. You’ll often encounter stingrays cruising around and it’s a good fishing spot too.”

There are also nice little grassy areas for picnics, and the fact that it’s not as busy as the main Paihia beach makes it a perfect little secret getaway. Did we mention that it’s free?

6. Ride the Twin Coast Cycleway

Another great free option for visitors is riding the Twin Coast Cycleway, part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail network. Crossing the country from West to East over an 87km track the Twin Coast route offers a smorgasbord of easy options.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sarah & Lee (@teambenter) on Nov 21, 2014 at 1:29am PST

One of the best and easiest sections close to Paihia is the 11km trip from Opua to Kawakawa, which takes most riders 1-1.5 hours.

Start near the pretty Opua Marina, travel alongside the Bay of Islands vintage steam railway, and catch lunch in popular Kawakawa, famous for – wait for it – it’s unusual public toilets. Yep, the Hundertwasser Toilets – designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich

Hundertwasser – must be the most Instagrammed loos in the Southern Hemisphere, and frankly have to be seen to be believed.

Having stopped to refresh (and relieve) yourself in Kawakawa you can either turn back for home base in Paihia, or push on for a multi-day experience that takes in Maori culture, beautiful scenery and the stunning Hokianga Harbour.

7. Catch your dinner off Te Haumi bridge

Nothing says Kiwi like freshly caught fish for dinner. But don’t you need a boat and expensive gear to enjoy the pastime? No way! Make like a local and head to Te Haumi bridge where you can catch a feed with a simple handline or rod dropped into the estuary below. Kahawai and trevally are two beautiful eating fish that you can target here, along with the sought-after snapper in the summer evenings. Just be careful of the traffic as this is an active road bridge – and ask a local about bag limits and minimum sizes for any fish that you catch.

8. Walk from Paihia to Opua

As Jake from The Mousetrap Backpackers in Paihia puts it: “Well, walking is free!” – and there are some stunning walks in and around the town that you can enjoy without spending  a cent.

Top of Jake’s list is the trip up to the lookout via School Road Track. This is an easy 1.5km return trip that passes through regenerating native forest before serving up an incredible view over Waitangi and across the expanse of the Bay of Islands.

And there’s no need to stop there. More intrepid walkers can carry on, linking up with the Oromahoe Traverse for an extra 2.5 hours walking (one way) to reach Opua.

From there, says Jake, you can head back to Paihia along the beach – making for a 5 hour hike all up. “Or else from Opua it’s only $1 without a car to catch the ferry to Okiato. Then you can walk on to Russell – doing it that way takes about 5 hours too.”

9. Take the kids to Oneroa Bay

Another local spot is Oneroa Bay, also known as Long Beach, on the eastern side of Russell. It’s one of the best swimming spots for families with kids thanks to its gentle slope and calm water. And its pleasantly sheltered in a northerly or westerly wind.

10. Experience the history and serenity of St Paul’s church

Built from solid local bluestone, brick and slate this impressive church is looks out over the beach, guarded by two gnarled pohutukawa trees.

A church has occupied this site since the early days of European settlement in New Zealand, and the graveyard dates to 1826. You can walk around the rear to soak up the quiet and sense of history and there are services every Sunday.

11. Relax on the beach and swim in the sea

Now this really ought to go without saying, but we’ll take a moment to say it anyway: Paihia and the Bay of Islands are simply brimming with stunning beaches and clean water. And unlike beaches in many parts of the world you won’t find pay-to-use recliners or crowds of hawkers flogging tat.

So for a beautiful day out that won’t cost anything just throw down your towel, jump in for a swim, and bask on the sand as you enjoy that quintessentially free Kiwi experience, a day at the beach.

The Oromahoe Traverse links the School Road Track to the Opua Kauri Walk , taking a further two hours.

Location: The track starts at the end of School Road, approximately 700 m (765 yards) from the Paihia town centre.

8. Go Kayaking – FREE/CHEAP

Yes, you read that correctly! You can borrow a kayak for free (or very cheap) in Paihia if you stay at one of the hostels which have kayaks. Choose a hostel from our list: 5 Best Backpacker Hostels in Paihia . Then head down to the beach and go exploring!

Location: See the link above for hostel names and locations.

9. Go Cycling – FREE/CHEAP

That’s right, you can borrow bikes too! The hostels that have kayaks usually have mountain bikes to borrow too, so you can explore the Bay of Islands a bit further. Location: Paihia Town Beach and Te Tii Bay are the best swimming beaches in Paihia.

13. Tackle the Bay of Islands Coastal Walkway – FREE

For a full-day adventure, follow the Coastal Walkway from Paihia to Opua (3 hours one way) over beaches and through coastal and mangrove forest. Either return the same way to join the ferry service from Opua (all you need is some spare change for this) over the water to Okiato . From Okiato, walk through a mix of wetlands and forest to historic Russell . We recommend having a look around the historic town before hopping onto a passenger ferry from Russell Wharf back to Paihia . The whole loop takes approximately 8 hours.

14. Fish From Te Haumi Bridge – FREE

Speaking of the Te Haumi Stream Bridge , this structure just happens to provide the perfect position for rod or handline fishing – no expensive boats or equipment needed! Kahawai, trevally and snapper are fish that can be caught here and make for good eating fish. Location: Te Haumi Stream road bridge, approximately 2.5 km (1.5 mi) south of Paihia town centre.

15. Admire the Architecture of St Paul’s Church – FREE

Paihia might not be a destination for architectural sightseeing perhaps with the exception of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and St Paul’s Anglican Church . Easy to find along the beachfront guarded by two gnarling pohutukawa trees, St Paul’s is made from local bluestone and has been a church site since 1823. The first organ to be used in New Zealand was used in this church.
