50-Plus Travel Tours & Travel Guide

50-Plus Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Traveling in your 50s can be very rewarding, especially today when travel has become easily accessible. Destinations that once seemed too remote and exotic to visit, particularly for folks over 50 — from the jungles of Costa Rica to the mountains of Bhutan , from the plains of East Africa to the icy waters of Antarctica — are now just a plane, train, or boat ride away.

With a dizzying number of travel opportunities, planning a trip can seem overwhelming. Airline routes, fares, and travel costs have become more complex, while the abundance of online advice can add to the confusion.

Independent travel, in general, can sometimes become more troublesome than it's worth — mainly when you have limited time to plan for a trip that may take you far away and last a week or longer.

However, joining a travel group for adults over 50 offers a solution, providing curated experiences and expert guidance to simplify the process and ensure memorable journeys without the hassle of booking your own trip and handling all the logistics yourself.

A Travel Group for Adults Over 50 Can Be the Best Solution

Adults over 50 are typically in a unique position where they have more time and resources to invest in their passion and curiosity to see the world. They also value the expertise and convenience provided by professional tour operators .

Travel groups for adults over 50 offer a tailored solution for mature adventurers seeking enriching experiences.

Today, tour companies are meeting the needs of over 50 travelers by offering personalized vacations with amenities like accessible accommodations, leisurely-paced itineraries, and knowledgeable guides.

From African safaris to treks to Machu Picchu , river cruises through Europe or Southeast Asia, small ship expeditions to the Galapagos , or culture-minded trips to Greece , Turkey , Italy , or Egypt , these tours cater to diverse interests.

Similarly, North America's national parks and archaeological treasures in Mexico and Central America beckon 50-plus travelers. With expert guidance and diverse adventures, over 50 travel tours create lasting memories without the hassle of planning every detail.

Top Travel Activities for People Over 50

In 2023, the number of leisure travelers increased by 22%, primarily driven by Generation X and Millennials. However, Baby Boomers spend the most on leisure travel (around $2,387 per capita). They have more money to spend on more luxurious experiences, and they are treating themselves!

Among the top over-50 travel trends are bucket-list trips — summer vacations, weekend getaways, international vacations, domestic trips, and heritage travel. Most 50-plus travel enthusiasts desire experiential travel.

Most travelers expect over 50 travel groups to offer immersive, expert-led tours with small group sizes- anything but sedentary — the tour operators have been quick to discover.

To that end, tour companies focusing on the 50-plus age group offer hands-on learning and workshops, locally guided tours, and behind-the-scenes sightseeing, from art-history tours in Italy to culinary tours in Thailand .

With more time for travel, over 50 travel tours are usually longer — typically a week or more — allowing more time to unplug and really engage in their destination.

Cruises for Adults Over 50

Cruises are popular among travelers in their 50s, offering convenience and accessibility to remote destinations. Traveling by ship eliminates the hassle of changing accommodations and dining arrangements. It is ideal for senior travelers over 50 seeking stress-free travel and meeting like-minded people on relatively longer trips.

Discover the breathtaking fjords of Norway or the vibrant islands of the Caribbean from the comfort of a cruise ship. Alternatively, explore Eastern Europe on a river cruise down the Danube or immerse yourself in the treasures of Egypt along the Nile .

Whether on the open seas or peaceful rivers, cruise adventures cater to the diverse interests of travel groups for adults over 50, ensuring unforgettable experiences.

Adventure Travel Groups for Adults Over 50

Over 50 travel groups embrace soft travel adventures. From hiking and cycling to birdwatching , they seek experiences blending physical activity with exploration.

Rather than opting for leisurely pursuits, couples and single travelers in their 50s prefer active sightseeing over traditional sightseeing tours, such as guided glacier walks in Iceland or cycling through Catalan villages. These walking and trekking activities provide a unique way to discover destinations while staying active.

Despite their adventurous spirit, over 50 travel enthusiasts appreciate comfort and luxury. Active vacations tailored for this age group offer a balance of adventure and relaxation, such as river cruising along the Danube in a state-of-the-art ship with daytime biking and walking tours through Austria's wine country.

That's the beauty of over 50 trips — they can be as active as you want, with various excursions and levels available.

Travel Groups for Singles Over 50

Solo travel among the 50-plus demographic is on the rise, offering mature travelers the chance to explore the world at their own pace. Safety and affordability are key considerations for those traveling alone when selecting destinations.

Travel groups for singles over 50 usually include places where travelers can immerse themselves in history and culture while connecting with like-minded individuals. Destinations offering opportunities like river cruises , soft adventure tours, walking tours, and cycling tours are popular.

Fortunately, many tour companies have eliminated single supplement fees, making traveling solo more accessible than ever. Guided tours and cruises designed exclusively for single travel provide ample opportunities to connect with other like-minded people in the group.

While women make up the majority of single over 50 travelers, both men and women value authentic local experiences and the security of small-group guided tours. These guided tours perfectly balance group activities and free time for independent exploration.

Travel Groups for Couples Over 50

For couples over 50, travel presents an opportunity to reconnect, explore new travel destinations, and create lasting memories together. With grown-up children and retirement on the horizon, many couples are eager to embark on discovery tours and adventure pursuits tailored to their interests and preferences.

Travel groups for couples over 50 offer a range of options, from romantic getaways to cultural immersions and outdoor adventures. Whether it's a leisurely river cruise along Europe's historic waterways or a thrilling safari in Africa, there's something to suit every couple's taste.

These guided tours provide the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with expert guides leading the way and taking care of all the details. Couples can enjoy shared experiences while also having the freedom to pursue individual interests during free time.

Whether seeking romance, adventure, or cultural enrichment, travel groups for couples over 50 offer the ideal setting to bond and create cherished memories.

At Travelstride, we understand the unique needs of travelers over 50, and our curated tours will help you find the perfect tour that aligns with your interests and preferences. , fishing, or may allow extra time for cultural immersion.

Top Destinations for Over 50 Travel Groups

Europe tops the chart for favorite destinations for 50-plus travel, particularly England , Italy , and France . Within the U.S. , 50-plus travelers primarily head to the southern and western states, with Florida, California, and New York being the top three most popular domestic destinations.

Older travelers also head to the Caribbean, Asia , and the Middle East . South American tours are in, too, as new upscale tour operators introduce a range of experiences beyond Machu Picchu (think hiking in Patagonia and Colombia coffee tours).

Small group guided tours, or river cruises, are a comfortable, safe way to explore new destinations — say, Asia or the Middle East — where cuisine, culture, and landscapes may be new and different.

Traveling with a reputable tour company in these regions allows over 50 travelers to immerse themselves in an entirely new and fascinating destination, yet with the safety net of guides who know their way around.

No matter where your wanderlust takes you, over 50 tour packages await you. From Egyptian pyramids and Petra to cycling in Japan to snorkeling in Belize, 50-plus travel is immersive, experiential, and gratifying.

Physical Requirements For Tourists Over 50

Understanding the physical requirements of your desired tour is crucial for preparing for the trip and managing expectations.

On Travelstride, tours are categorized into five primary physical levels: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Strenuous, and Extreme, providing clarity on the level of activity involved. This knowledge not only ensures you can fully enjoy your vacation but also helps alleviate stress by informing your packing decisions.

For instance, for walking tours rated as "Easy," you may pack extra walking clothes. In contrast, river cruises ("Very Easy") allow for indulgent packing with the convenience of only unpacking once.

Travel groups for adults over 50 typically sport Moderate and Easy range, which include cruises and guided tours with half-day walking, and some may consist of adventurous pursuits like kayaking or camel riding .

Those with limited mobility may favor over 50 tour groups rated Very Easy, such as river cruises and train journeys. Remember to verify wheelchair accessibility with the tour company to ensure the trip is right for you.

FEATURED TRIPS

Grasslands extend to a horizon of cobalt-blue skies, pastel-hued rocks color the Gobi Desert and fast-flowing rivers cut deep canyons in arid steppes in this remote Asian nation land-locked between China and Russia. The people, descendants of Genghis Khan, are an eclectic mix of rugged nomads, Buddhist monks, farmers and merchants. For the truly adventurous, Mongolia holds the promise of an exotic culture rarely visited by travelers. Starting in Ulaanbaatar, the tour uses the capital as a hub to visit the Gobi Desert, Lake Hovsgol and central Mongolia. In the Gobi, we visit the Flaming Cliffs, a world-class dinosaur site with remains so plentiful that dinosaur eggshells can still be found on the surface. The highlight for many is the famous Naadam Festival. Full of ceremony, pomp and festive Mongolians, this event features the "Three Sports of Men" - archery, wrestling and horse racing. Papua New Guinea

tours for 50 year olds

Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally interesting places on Earth, with many of its tribal people following a traditional lifestyle. This adventure has been designed to experience the villages and people of Papua New Guinea. In order to do this, we visit a number of local villages and we have 2 overnights in one village. There are overnight stays where the accommodation is very basic; it can be dormitory style and have no fans/air conditioning and very limited facilities. As much of the interior of the country has no roads or impassable ones, we maximize our time by flying from location to location and flight schedules frequently change. While we endeavor to do/see everything listed in the itinerary, it is common for changes to occur to the itinerary for things that are beyond our control. Traveler must be prepared for changes to this program, either before your journey starts or during the trip itself.   Click here  for more information!

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.

5. Smithsonian Journeys

Like Road Scholar, Smithsonian Journeys is a group travel company for seniors that focuses on educational travel. It offers specialized land journeys, active outdoor journeys, small ship cruises, and cultural stays. At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. Tours include culturally immersive experiences like visits to homes, meals with locals, and demonstrations of local crafts and cuisines. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) Smithsonian’s five activity level ratings are somewhat more demanding than Road Scholar’s, ranging from “Easy” (easy walking and shorter travel days) to “Challenging” (e.g., climbing Kilimanjaro).

Quick Facts about Senior Tours with Smithsonian Journeys

  • Average group size: 12 to 24 people for most land journeys; cruises from 36 people (river boat) to 264 (small ship cruise).
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks.

  • Destinations: 130 itineraries on seven continents (with an emphasis on Europe).

Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours for Older Travelers with Globus

  • Average group size: 24 people (small-group discovery) to 36 people (average size of a coach tour).
  • Price range: Inexpensive, but optional excursions cost extra.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, some meals, airport transfers on published tour departure and return dates, and admission to sites included in tour.
  • What’s not included: Optional experiences (may be $50 to $100 each), tips, and some meals.
  • Primary audience: Adults who want a wide variety of travel options.
  • Destinations: More than 50 countries on six continents.
  • How to Book: Directly through Globus ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar , all which are tour specialist OTAs; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

7. Intrepid Travel

Founded in 1988 in Australia and now employee-owned, Intrepid Travel offers 1,100 escorted tours worldwide, with an average of 10 travelers per tour. The company focuses on small group active trips off the beaten track. Its tours often use public transportation and stay at locally owned accommodations.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. A “Comfort” trip to Jordan might include some moderate hiking to sites, floating in the Dead Sea, a stay in a desert camp, and snorkeling in the Red Sea. Intrepid also offers small ship adventure cruising to such places as the Galapagos Island, the Greek and Turkish Islands, Antarctica, and French Polynesia.

Intrepid conducts safety assessments of all included and optional activities; experienced local leaders provide instruction and advice to travelers who are new to an activity or area. It also has an excellent record of corporate responsibility. Intrepid focuses on sustainable travel and has been carbon neutral since 2010.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours with Intrepid Travel

  • Average group size: 10 people.
  • Price range: Moderately inexpensive but extra cost for premium upgrades.
  • What’s included: On general tours, you get accommodations, breakfasts, and local experiences. On premium tours, you can expect additions like breakfast and some other meals, tips, and airport and luggage transfer.
  • What’s not included: See above.
  • Primary audience: Active adult travelers of all ages.
  • Destinations: More than 100 countries on seven continents, including polar regions and more South Pacific destinations than most other senior tour companies.
  • How to Book: Directly through Intrepid ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar all which are tour specialist OTAs (online travel agents) that offer hundreds of Intrepid trips; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

Quick Facts about Cruises for Seniors with Viking

  • Passenger limit on river boats: 190 people  (up to 930 on ocean ships)
  • Price range: Moderately expensive but inclusive.
  • What’s included: Onboard accommodations, meals, shore excursions, entertainment, tips; and transfers with air purchase through Viking. Some tours also include free international airfare.
  • What’s not included: Transfers and porterage for those not using Viking for air reservations, some tips.
  • Primary audience: Adults, but primarily older adults.
  • Destinations: Mostly Europe for river tours, also cruises on the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong Rivers; expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Great Lakes; ocean cruises to various destinations.
  • How to Book: Directly through Viking ; via CruiseCritic ; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

Solo Travel Over 50: Embrace New Adventures on Your Terms

Janice Waugh

July 18, 2023 by Janice Waugh

Solo travel over 50 and you will find new interests, gain new confidence, and discover new ways to manage a major life transition.

More people over 50 are traveling solo than ever before.

More than a quarter of the respondents to our annual reader survey are over 50. The percentage is similar on Facebook where we host the Solo Travel Society with over 270,000 participants. Dozens, sometimes thousands of people engage with other solo travelers there every day.

Whether you're in a relationship or are fabulously single, solo travel delivers so much more than the typical travel experience. And whether you are traveling independently or with a group, solo travel does not necessarily mean that you are alone. Taking a cooking class, a walking tour, or attending a meetup on a subject you are passionate about are all great activities for solo travelers. They can connect you to people of all ages from all over the world.

But before we get into the best reasons to travel solo over 50, let's look at the major life transition you may be facing, some of the questions that are arising now, and why this might be the perfect time of your life to head out on your own.

Travel Solo to Navigate a Major Life Transition

If you're over 50, you are likely facing a major life transition. As a 50+ you may:

  • be content with your career and no longer looking for challenges there.
  • have adult children who are no longer at home.
  • be part of the sandwich generation with parents and children requiring your attention.
  • have a relationship status that is complicated.

In the many-faceted world of those over 50, life is changing. You are facing a major life transition and it may not be clear what you're transitioning to.

Where will you redirect your energy?

Perhaps you're experiencing one or a number of the situations below. See how solo travel can help.

  • Have you been in the same relationship for decades? Is it getting a little tired? Take separate vacations and return with lots to say to each other.
  • Is your spouse or partner uninterested in travel? Going solo is your answer. See the world and return refreshed to your relationship.
  • Have your kids just left the nest? Then it’s time to find out who you are again. You can’t really do this with a companion who knows you and expects you to act in certain ways. Get away. Travel alone and rediscover yourself.
  • Are you suddenly single, either by divorce or loss? Solo travel is a real confidence builder , a great way to make a comeback.
  • Are you concerned that people at work see you as old? Head out on a solo adventure and people will quickly adjust their attitudes.
  • Is work dull with little hope of things changing? Solo travel over 50 will inject some challenge into life.
  • Is money tight? Solo travel can be inexpensive. It’s much easier to save on hostels, hospitality stays, great deals, and cheap flights when you travel alone.
  • Do you have health problems? Stress is a major contributor to most health problems. Plan a solo holiday where you set the schedule and take a break from the stress in your life.
  • Did you retire early? Do you have time to travel but family and friends don’t? No need to sit around and wait for them. Go solo and enjoy.
  • Is it time for change? Travel alone, reflect, analyze, and explore your possibilities without the influence of others.

Best Reasons to Travel Solo Over 50

Maybe we all need a little time to ourselves, to make decisions, discover our strengths, and experience more autonomy. Maybe we all need to travel solo.

  • Enjoy your freedom.  If you have spent most of your life surrounded by and responsible to others this is your chance to be responsible to no one but yourself. Go to bed when you like. Get up when you like. Eat, drink, wander, explore what you like. It's all up to you.
  • Gain confidence from that independence . Whether you're traveling solo on a tour or independently, there is a confidence-building element to solo travel for having jumped into a somewhat unknown situation on your own.
  • Discover who you are when you’re not meeting the demands of a spouse or children . When responding to everyone else, who has time to get to know oneself? Solo travel over 50 gives you that opportunity. Do what you couldn’t afford or didn’t have time to do when younger.
  • Explore new interests.  Solo travel can be a gateway to new interests. Whether it's music or hiking or discovering like I did last month that I like champagne, try something new. Maybe you wouldn't go to a bar by yourself at home but on the road in a town like Nashville , how could you possibly stay in with all that music around you? Perhaps  hiking is not part of your lifestyle but if you find yourself in the Lake District of England you may just find a new love. Solo travel is a chance to try something new.
  • Model a different kind of aging. I find that many people in their twenties and thirties are really curious about me. They seem to look at me as the kind of person they want to be when they get to my age – which, in their mind is very, very old. They see me as bold and welcome me into their conversations. And they often tell me that I am not like their parents at all. It seems I'm an alternative model for their future.
  • Expand your world with cross-generational conversations . Talking with people younger and older than me breaks me out of my limited world and gives me a better understanding of the issues faced by others. And they amuse me. I remember walking down a street in Italy with an American man in his twenties. He turned to look back at a beautiful young woman who had passed us and said to me, “I love Italian women. They have great junk in the trunk.” Really! Whatever I think about his comment, to have such access to young attitudes is wonderful, if not curious and sometimes disturbing.
  • Enjoy the respect age receives in other countries . My hair is grey. Given the courtesy I receive in some countries I have thought that I present as older than I am. Then I realized that it's actually about age being respected more in other cultures. Traveling on a train in India a young man wouldn't dream of moving me from my seat even though I was willing (insisting) and had, by means of a seat shift, taken his. No, his response was, “but you are our guest.” I suspect someone younger may not have been treated quite so well.
  • Reboot your life that may otherwise be on autopilot . Feeling a bit bored? Need to shake things up a bit? Need new stimulation? Solo travel can give you this. Fulfill lifelong dreams that may not be shared with a partner. Many partners take separate vacations to pursue their personal dreams. Go for it.

Different Options for Traveling Alone

There are two basic ways to travel solo.

  • Independent solo travel
  • Solo travel on a tour

Independent Solo Travel

Independent solo travel is when you plan, navigate, and negotiate everything yourself. The downside is all that work and responsibility if you don't enjoy it. The upside is freedom and independence. It's exhilarating! Most of what we write here is about independent solo travel. Here's a guide to over 500 posts on Solo Traveler.

Solo Travel on a Tour or Cruise

This is solo travel in a group where the planning and organizing is all taken care of for you. Every day you have a guide and the group heads out to another activity. No fear of being lonely, eating alone, or your safety. The tour takes care of everything.

Most companies organize tours and have a few solos on them. There are a few companies that just cater to solo travelers. Check out our  Deals  page for our exclusive list of solo-friendly tours with no or very low single supplements from multiple companies. Solo Travel Safety Considerations

Every week, people reach this blog by using the search term “solo travel after 50.” These words are frequently paired with concern for safety. There seems to be some concern about age and solo travel. From my perspective, there shouldn’t be.

Being 65, I think I'm qualified to address this issue. And, as you might imagine, I believe that it is not only safe to travel solo after fifty but also, for all the reasons above, important.

That said, at a certain age we become more aware of safety issues. When we were young, optimism prevailed. Concerns were tossed into the wind. Not so much now. So, here I have a few safety tips specifically for older solo travelers.

  • Get travel insurance . If you're over 65 this can be a problem. It gets more expensive the older you are but it can also save your bacon. Read how travel insurance has saved me a number of times in  A Complete Guide to Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers.
  • Put medications in your carry-on luggage . Eliminate the possibility of being separated from your daily medications should your baggage go astray. Pack all medications in your carry-on. It's always recommended to keep all meications in their original containers from the pharmacy. Read  How to Get Through an Airport by Yourself with Ease
  • Request special services in advance . I've walked more than a kilometer from my plane to the airport exit. For some, this may be too long a trek. Consider your abilities and request any special support you need a few days in advance of your flight.
  • Travel light . There's nothing worse than being in a position where you can't get help and you can't manage your bags on your own. Read  Bare Minimum Packing: Here’s Your Packing List .
  • Wear quality shoes . Balance starts to go after a certain age. It's a subtle process. Not obvious at first but, under the right (or should I say, wrong) circumstances, a twisted ankle, or worse, can easily happen. I gave up my beloved Merrell sandals for my more stable Eccos a couple of years ago.
  • Have back-up glasses . I lost a pair hiking once. It's simple to do. Best to have a backup pair.
  • Keep the bling at home . At this stage of life you may have some beautiful jewelry but that doesn't mean you have to take it traveling. Keep it at home where it's safe and you won't attract attention to yourself.
  • Don't promote the fact that you're away on social media . It may be exciting to be going on a solo adventure but don't announce it to the world. You want your home to be safe as you travel as well.

Great Destination Ideas for 50+ Travelers

In reality, the best destination for any solo traveling boomer (the baby boomer generation is generally defined as people born from 1946 to 1964) is up to them. You might want to climb Mount Everest and if you're up to the challenge, it's a great destination for you. So what can I offer in terms of destinations? How can I generalize? Here are trips that just about anyone can enjoy and they don't involve learning another language.

  • Spectacular Western Canada.  I traveled Western Canada by plane, train, and car a few years ago. The grandeur of the mountains, the friendliness of the people, great hikes, and small towns made it a great trip. It was simple to plan and affordable. You can read about it here:  Western Canada Itinerary: Top Things to See and Do  and  British Columbia by Train: Budget or Luxury. It’s Your Choice.
  • The United Kingdom.  The UK has so much to offer. The culture is different but the language is the same, making it interesting and easy. London is a top destination for most of us. I find the center of the city to be very safe. I've walked at night and had no problem. Read  Solo Travel London on a Budget: Top Tips for Free and Cheap and  Best Places to Stay in London: Accommodation for Solo Travelers . I'll never tire of Northern Ireland's glens and its dramatic Causeway Coastal Route. Read  Solo Travel Northern Ireland: Tips for Belfast and Beyond .
  • Road trip!  I love a road trip. I especially love a road trip along the coast and through a rugged landscape and one that drops me into small towns and villages to meet locals. I've taken two such road trips in Canada, one in New Brunswick and the other in Nova Scotia. Both provinces are very accessible by car for those who live on the eastern seaboard of the United States. Read  15 Great Solo Road Trips: All Solo Traveler Tested .
  • An educational holiday.  I set a goal for myself to become fluent in French. I have improved greatly by using holiday time for French immersion classes in Quebec City and Lyon, France.
  • A river cruise.  A river cruise covers many destinations in one trip with only one unpacking and repacking involved. That makes it easy. Read 12 River Cruise Tips for Solo Travelers: How to Make the Most of Your Journey .
  • Walking trips . I really enjoyed my walking trip on the Isle of Skye . On the path, I would stop, take in the view, and find a huge smile stretching across my face. I smile a lot but smiling just because the air and view and exertion are so wonderful is not part of my regular day. I really suggest walking trips. You can be as adventurous as you like. I encourage you to read this post by Susanne, a reader from Austria:  Solo Travel Destination: The West Highland Way, Scotland .
  • Creative travel . Creative travel is travel for the express purpose of learning something new. It may be cooking or a language, dance or painting. Creative travel helps you enter your destination through the local culture and by meeting locals and learning from them. Read  Creative Travel Tips: Discover More of a Destination and Yourself.

Some Additional Solo Travel Tips

Traveling solo late in your second act (or maybe in your third) is a wonderful experience. Whether you go for luxury or budget travel, it's all available to you. I'd like you to remember a couple of things.

  • Others will welcome the excitement of you . You are, by the mere fact that you're traveling solo, adventurous to many. You liven up an evening for people. I have enjoyed many a coffee or meal with travelers and locals who welcomed me into their conversation. I enrich them as they enrich me.
  • Hostels are not just for the young . Once referred to as youth hostels, today they are just hostels. Some, like the YHA hostels, are still non-profit but others are part of hostel chains. Yes, just like boomers, hostels have grown up. As the hostel clientele of the 60s and 70s has matured, so have hostels. To get a sense of staying at hostels as a boomer, read  The Hostel Experience for Solo Travelers: What to Expect. How to Stay Safe .

And one final comment:  don't hesitate to return to places you visited when you were younger . One of the great benefits of solo travel over 50 is that the knowledge gained and life lived over the years will take you to a deeper understanding of a destination than you could possibly have had before.

Sharing is caring!

Good Housekeeping's pick of the best over 50s holiday ideas

Whether you'd like to travel solo, sail away on a cruise or have the ultimate adventure, these are our favourite over 50s holidays

If you thought the best travel adventures were only for youngsters, think again! Here are our top picks for over 50s holidays, from Antarctic expeditions to Mississippi cruises…

One of the many advantages of travelling in your 50s is the opportunity to meet new people who have similar interests. There are plenty of trips on offer where you can participate in fun activities with like-minded people, indulge in your hobbies, or even learn a new skill .

over 50s holidays

One of these is an exciting five-day trip to Norfolk , where keen cooks can enjoy a day hosted by Delia Smith for a full day at her food and wine workshop. You'll have a special Q&A session with Delia, a three-course lunch with wine tasting, a cooking demonstration and a cocktail masterclass.

You’ll also have plenty of time to explore the tranquil Norfolk Broads and the lovely city of Norwich.

5. Visit volcanic Madeira and experience its fabulous flower festival

If you’ve spent many a happy summer holiday in Europe’s classic holiday destinations, like the south of France or the Italian Lakes , you might be tempted by a trip to one of Europe’s lesser-known locations.

over 50s holidays

If you’re looking for an unforgettable garden holiday , the volcanic island of Madeira could be the location for you. Madeira is known as the ‘floating garden of the Atlantic’ because of the vast range of tropical gardens and plants that thrive in this subtropical climate.

In spring, Madeira becomes even more flamboyantly flowery with the arrival of its annual Flower Festival . You can visit this festival and explore the island with Good Housekeeping on our tour in April 2023 , where you’ll have a grandstand seat for the festival’s main parade. You’ll see floats passing along the streets of downtown Funchal as live music plays and fragrant scents fill the air.

Alternatively, you can visit in May and join gardening expert Christine Walkden as she tours the islands most beautiful gardens and shares some of her tips for your own outdoor space.

6. Explore the highlights of Spain and Morocco by rail

The two largest of Spain’s many marvellous cities, Barcelona and Madrid, are brimming with culture, from art museums with world-class collections to instantly recognisable architectural gems. Anyone with an appreciation for all things Iberian needs to visit these two exciting cities, and the good news is, due to Spain’s efficient train connections, you can easily travel from one city to the other.

over 50s holidays

Good Housekeeping has a rail journey taking you to Madrid and Barcelona, but also to Morocco, where you’ll be wowed by the intricate Moorish architecture and the opulent gold leaf and stucco archways seen in many of the country’s historic buildings.

This is a great way to see three cities rich with culture and history in one hassle-free trip. While in Morocco you’ll also visit the dazzling blue village of Chefchaouen and see the highlights of Casablanca on a guided tour.

7. Ride the little trains of the Dolomites and visit Lake Garda

Travelling by train is a wonderfully hassle-free way to experience a new destination. You can travel easily from one attraction to another while meeting like-minded travellers and enjoying spectacular scenery as you go.

over 50s holidays

One destination with a range of lovely train rides on offer is the magnificent Italian Dolomites. You can traverse these mountains by train, cable car and funicular railway as you get to know this sensationally scenic part of northern Italy on a nine-day trip with Good Housekeeping.

A highlight of this holiday is a peaceful boat trip across Lake Garda, where soaring mountains and sensational panoramas will surround you as you sail.

8. Admire springtime blooms along Dutch waterways

Another location that should be considered unmissable for any keen gardener is the Netherlands, with its iconic tulip fields surrounding wooden windmills.

over 50s holidays

Spring is the best time to visit, when the fields burst into flamboyant colour as seven million tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths bloom in the famous gardens of Keukenhof. You’re bound to leave feeling full of inspiration for your own gardening projects.

You can visit Holland’s kaleidoscopic Keukenhof and Appeltern Gardens with Good Housekeeping in spring 2023. You’ll be exploring these wonderful gardens with the expert company of Adam Frost, the popular Gardeners' World presenter.

9. Explore the splendid Lake Maggiore and gardens of Italy

The glorious lakes of northern Italy are well-loved for their glamour. There are elegant villas to explore, perfectly peaceful gardens to amble around, and delightfully fancy lakeside terraces where you can sample delectable Italian dishes while overlooking the calm water. Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy and stretches over the border to the majestic Ticino region of neighbouring Switzerland.

over 50s holidays

Its island Isola Bella, the ‘beautiful island’, is dominated by an opulent palace with outstanding gardens, where you'll find statues dating back to the 17th century standing tall among rare exotic plants that thrive in the Borromean Gulf's mild climate.

This is one of the gardens you’ll visit on Good Housekeeping’s seven-day tour of Italy’s lakes. You’ll travel to Italy by train on this no-fly holiday, staying at an elegant four-star hotel in the historical town of Stresa.

10. Take the grandkids to meet Santa in Lapland

If you’re seeking a true winter wonderland, perhaps for a trip with the grandchildren, you’d be hard-pressed to find somewhere more magically festive than Swedish Lapland. Here you’ll find a tranquil wilderness with vast pine and spruce forests covered in deep snow. As soon as you arrive, you'll feel like you've stepped into a snowy scene from a Christmas card.

over 50s holidays

There are so many family-friendly activities to enjoy here. You can travel through the forests on a husky-pulled sled, meet friendly local reindeer, and enjoy a warm drink in a lavvu, a traditional teepee used by Sami people. You might even choose to take the grandkids on a magical snowmobile sledge ride to visit Santa in his grotto.

You can try these activities and more on Good Housekeeping’s four-day trip to Lapland in December. You’ll be staying at a hotel with its very own Christmas grotto, where kids can make Christmas decorations while you relax in the cosy lounge bar.

Europe Escape

The trip was an absolute great taste of several Western European countries. We jammed a lot of itinerary into a twelve day trip. Overall, the accomodations and meals were favorable. I would like to make a suggestion. On the first day or the trip, we were walked for miles through the side streets of Venice. People were not ready for this level of exertion on the very frist day of the trip. Within days, I saw two women limping and wearing knee braces in order to walk. There were people utilizing canes to walk. I have Lupus and am prone to bouts of fatigue, especially when expoised to too much sun and heat. I would ask that the company appropriates a water taxi for the coach passengers that will drop them off at the dick right next to Piazza San Marco.rather than that grind of a walk throught the side streets. People want to see the Piazza, not the side streets That first miles long walk took its toll on many of the passengers. I even saw one women entering the coach and break into tears because of her pain level. Most of the people on this trip were in their fifties and sixties. I'm sure they were not expecting such a rigorous daily regiment. I'm 6' 6'' and 300+. I was averaging 10,000 to 15, 000 steps a day on on uneven cobblestone, and boy did it ever take its toll on my knees and joints. I'm still recovering from the achy knees. That's the only suggestion I have. Find a way to get the tourist from point A to B without having people on vacation walk for multiple miles. It's a vacation. You're not supposed to return home injured and in pain.

It was my very first Intrepid trip and I enjoyed every moment of it. It was more than I expected! I loved the chemistry of the group (I miss them dearly), the accommodation location as well as the included activities. Being in a small group also has a lot of advantages like getting to know each of them personally and build friendships even after the trip. I was just so glad I took the trip through Intrepid!

The experience was excellent, would definitely recommend to my friends and family visiting. The tour director and the driver were so thoughtful and kind throughout the tour.

Essential Britain & Ireland Tour

Essential Britain & Ireland

Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!

Wonderful tour of Balkans! Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Albania were new to us. Each day was well planned with interesting sites to explore: old historic centers/ museums/ castles/ churches/ mosques/ markets. Hotels were well located and offered delicious breakfasts. Fabio our guide and driver was excellent and taught us the history of all the sights that we visited. We will recommend this tour to family and friends.

Romantic Rhine (Northbound) 2024

The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

Best of Ireland and Scotland (15 Days) Tour

Best of Ireland and Scotland (15 Days)

What can I say about a last minute trip of a lifetime! We had the best guide, James Smith, and best driver, Paul. They were organised and professional, calm and skilful at dealing with a bunch of strange personalities; witty and insightful, sharing their life experiences with us; advising and guiding us with the history and the memories of home. Even missing my pickup point, I did not panic or worry. I’m sure James was shocked at receiving a call from Australia. Lucky for me, he picked up! Good to have a backup plan. Ireland and Scotland were everything I wished for. I loved all of it- the driving, excursions, free time, sightseeing, foods, local people, ancient and modern history, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Donegal, Londonderry, Ring of Kerry, Giants Causeway, wall of Remembrance, Good Friday Peace agreement. I learnt about habits, customs, whiskey and shortbread, music, culture, accents and people, Celtic and Viking influences, symbolism and the importance of change and structure affecting our lives. Love the quirkiness too - The idea of Guinness offering a pint of beer for your blood donation is hilarious, doing your exams in Gaelga gives you a 20% advantage; museums and most event places have no entry fees. NB - (1) ensure all travellers have contact details, only for emergency use (updated as to country and location). (2) We would have loved to have a photo with our guide and driver. They were an important part of our experience! A Most enjoyable and memorable Trafalgar trip. I loved the little aside-jaunts and I loved the way James and Paul worked at keeping the journey interesting, well paced, stress less and fun. Highly commended!

What people love about Europe Tours for Seniors

I can honestly say that this was the best holiday my friend and I had ever experienced. From start to finish, the organisation and communication were excellent, we had a very experienced tour guide, Theo, who showed us this fascinating region of The Balkans, and imparted his knowledge of the culture, history and life in the different regions. He was always very helpful. The places we visited were beautiful, amazing and whoever organised the planning of this tour deserves a 5 star rating too! I would recommend this holiday to anyone who likes to explore different countries: downside - living out of a suitcase, but worthwhile. Thank you TourRadar, we would certainly use you again. Sue and Karla
Great experience. Very fun.
The tour was awesome. Too bad it was short. Our Tour leader Noddy perform extremely well job organizing and controlling our big group so we was on time everywhere. Our driver Dennis professionalism is off the charts. Especially when we was driving through narrow streets of Italy. I would recommend this tour to others

9 Best Vacation Destinations for Seniors

Whether you're looking for a relaxing retreat or an active getaway, I have a resort for you.

tours for 50 year olds

You're retired — and vaccinated — and it's time to treat yourself to a well-deserved and probably long-awaited vacation. With no time constraints, you can plan a stay of a few weeks, and you might appreciate the convenience of a destination resort that lets you arrive, unpack, and enjoy dining and most activities on site.

Like many retirees, you're game to try something novel or pick up a new hobby, and you want to continue (or start) focusing on your well-being and health. The right mix of relaxation and activities, opportunities for time outdoors, pampering, and fun should complete the picture. A place designed for adults might be ideal, and perhaps a (short) visit and some entertainment for the grandkids and family would work well, especially if your get-togethers have been limited over the past year.

We've searched for a few places based on these amenities, and we have suggestions for you here. We hope at least one will spark your vacation imagination and get your planning started.

Suncadia Resort: Cle Elum, Washington

Set in Washington's Cascade Mountains and the Wenatchee Washington National Forest, this picturesque resort offers rich scenery, crisp mountain air, and a variety of outdoor activities. Choose The Lodge for panoramic river and mountain views or The Inn, an elegant lodge with golf course views.

Play golf, try your hand at archery, or grab an axe and heave it at the target. (Yes, axe throwing is a popular new activity!) Hike or stroll along deer and elk trails, rent a bike, canoe, or kayak, or find your inner artist with a resort-provided acrylic painting kit or a tie-dye lesson. Begin the day with guided meditation or a full-body outdoor workout class. Fit in a spa treatment for some pampering. Should the grandkids arrive for a visit, there's a pool, stuffed bear factory, and plenty of ways to play at Suncadia.

Big Cedar Lodge: Ridgedale, Missouri

This wilderness resort in Missouri's Ozark Mountains is set on 4,600 acres of natural beauty. A wide variety of accommodations lets you choose the perfect place to stay, whether you decide on one of the three grand lodges, a cozy private log cabin, luxurious cottage, or a glamping unit at Camp Long Creek.

Five golf courses and practice facilities include the new Payne's Valley course, driving range, full-swing simulator, and the Tom Watson putting course. Sharpen your aim at the Bass Pro Shops Shooting Academy with sporting clays, American Skeet, and more. Hike, bike, take a scenic nature walk, or journey to Top of the Rock Lost Canyon on an electric cart for waterfalls and lake views. Fitness classes, exercise equipment, and a personal trainer are available. If the grandkids visit, they'll love the Kids Adventure Club and Nature Discovery Center.

Lone Mountain Ranch: Big Sky, Montana

Just 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park, the ranch is set in the Montana Rockies about 40 minutes from Bozeman Airport. Stay in one of 27 historic log cabins, ranging from one to six bedrooms, each individually named and offering wood stoves, cozy rustic furnishings, full baths, forested settings, and stunning views.

In true ranch style, there's horseback riding, with backcountry trails and experienced wranglers to ensure a memorable experience for riders of all levels and ages as well as naturalist guided hikes, mountain biking, and fly fishing, for first-timers or seasoned anglers. Paddle a canoe or kayak or spend a day floating down the Madison River in a tube. Take an excursion to Yellowstone National Park, curated by an experienced guide. Start your day with an outdoor yoga class, and then have some fun with archery or axe throwing. Adventure programs for youth are available as well.

Mission Point: Mackinac Island, Michigan

This waterfront resort boasts the longest lakeshore on the island, and guests can stay in the Main Lodge or the more secluded Straits Lodge with dog-friendly rooms. Guest rooms and suites in both lodges feature comfortable furnishings, and the Bois Blanc Suite offers 1,500 square feet, full kitchen, and laundry facilities — ideal for longer stays.

Relax on the expansive lawn in an Adirondack chair, stroll downtown for shopping (Don't miss the famous Mackinac Island fudge), play golf, swim in the pool, or soak in a hot tub to your heart's content. Treat yourself to an afternoon at the Lakeside Spa and Salon. The vintage feel of the island, a National Historic Landmark, is enhanced by its ban on motor vehicles as well as its historic architecture and relaxed pace. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride to learn about the island, and you'll be transported to another era.

Montage Palmetto Bluff: Bluffton, South Carolina

Guest rooms, suites, cottages, and residences are available in the 20,000-acre community that encompasses a nature preserve, two picturesque villages, a riverfront marina, and Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, making it easy to choose accommodations for your visit. In fact, should you fall in love with the Lowcountry lifestyle, moss-draped oaks, and natural beauty, you might make a permanent home there as many visitors have over the years.

Play golf at the May River Golf Club, kayak, canoe, or take a boat tour and spot dolphins cruising along with you. Sporting clay stations wind through a 40-acre forest for shooting practice and games. Tennis, bocce ball, and pickleball courts are offered for both play and instruction, if you want to improve your skills. Stroll or take a leisurely bike ride among tree-lined paths. When the family comes to visit, the youngsters will enjoy Paintbox for games, crafts, movies, scavenger hunts, nature walks, and outdoor activities, and they'll thrill to the treehouses as they climb to the observation deck.

Cavallo Point: Sausalito, California

Located at the foot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and set among 75,000 acres in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Cavallo Point offers stunning scenery, world class dining, and a variety of experiences. Historical architecture blends with contemporary design, giving guests the choice of historic or contemporary-style rooms, many boasting views of San Francisco Bay, in a serene setting just minutes from the city.

Hike, bike, run, or walk during the day, and spend the evening around an outdoor fire pit. Take a guided hike, yoga class, sunset cruise, or an exciting Seaplane or Helicopter tour. At the Healing Arts Center & Spa, guests can choose from a variety of wellness experiences. Cooking classes and demonstrations are offered, and the Cavallo Point Oyster Experience features chef Tony Adams shucking and grilling fresh oysters to be served with expertly paired wine and cocktails. Camp Cavallo for Kids keeps them busy with nature hikes, art, games, and historic exploration.

Arizona Biltmore: Phoenix, Arizona

If classic luxury is the vacation style you're after, the newly renovated Arizona Biltmore , a Waldorf Astoria Resort, should be high on your list. Built in 1929, the 39-acre estate at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve is reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour with 701 accommodations (including 36 suites, 28 cottages, 54 villas) and Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design.

Closed for more than a year for major renovations, the resort reopened in May 2021 with new restaurants, a day spa, and seven pools including an adults-only pool and family pool with a 65-foot water slide. Play golf, tennis, or pickleball or take advantage of concierge arrangements for hot air balloon rides, stargazing, biking, hiking, and more. At Tierra Luna Spa, select from a range of curated therapies or join a yoga or aqua aerobics class. Be sure to order a Tequila Sunrise at the Wright Bar where the cocktail was invented.

Bungalows Key Largo: Key Largo, Florida

This all-inclusive, adults-only resort is a tropical oasis where you can choose from a variety of activities or just relax in a poolside cabana. Stay in a waterfront bungalow or one set among the lush gardens with a soaking tub and outdoor shower.

Water sports include kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and swimming in the protected bay where you might see manatees and dolphins glide by. Don your snorkel gear to float among colorful native fish. Join a beachfront yoga class or do your own workout at the full-service Fitness Tiki Hut and then head to the Zen Garden Spa's steam room, sauna, or outdoor treatment cabana for a soothing massage. Find your spot at the Sunset Pool, and sip frozen drinks while you work on your tan. Watch the sun go down on a catamaran cruise with a cocktail in hand.

Rancho Bernardo Inn: San Diego, California

Guest rooms, suites, and specially designed accessible rooms are set among lush gardens for a secluded feel. Private patios and balconies offer garden, spa, or golf course views. The resort 's 250 acres and San Diego's perfect weather provide opportunities for al fresco dining and outdoor activities.

Play golf at the pristine 18-hole course, relax by the pool, or have fun with lawn games like cornhole, croquet, or oversized Connect Four. Tour the Chef's Garden to see the source of the restaurants' fresh ingredients or get some ideas for your home garden. Spend some time at the spa, take a sunset yoga class, or arrange a private session. You can interact with a trained bird of prey with a private falconry encounter. If young ones visit, they'll love the "dive-in movies" at the family pool, the well-equipped game room, and San Diego's nearby attractions.

Life beyond 50+ is so exciting, especially when you are with like-minded young people and want to enjoy life like kid. This is how I would like to summarize 50+ Voyagers. My mom for the first time travelled alone with a group of strangers but she came back with lifelong friends and memories to cherish. I am so glad that I could facilitate creating this memory for her during recent Ladakh trip. Very well organised, all thanks to Sangita who personally took care of everyone on the trip. Pictures of this event are saying a lot more. How I wish I was 50+ too ! Looking forward to creating more memories for my mom with you.

The life starts at 50 is what I fully endorse after joining Ladakh trip 3rd-11th August 2016. Every person has a child within, let it come out and there can be no better way than joining 50+ Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club. I was a bit skeptical and apprehensive of joining it but now I think it has been my one of the best decisions to be a part of it. The itinerary was properly planned right from the flights to hotels to sightseeing. Everything was hassle free. In a nut shell it was adventurous, amazing and awesome experience. Thank you Sangita for making me feel younger and healthier.

Due to the age factor (78+), going alone anywhere gives me a little scare. When I came to know about 50+ Voyagers and booked Coorg tour with them, I was in the beginning skeptical how the services would be. However, when the day arrived to commence the 3 days holidays, everything from pick up from my house till they dropped me back at home - went off in the most pleasant and smooth manner. The accommodation was the best one could imagine nice cottages among a 250 acres of coffee estate, where nature showed its splendor. I would say that 50+ Voyagers is the ideal organization to look for those who have crossed 50. The service rendered by them is superb. I am looking forward to my next holiday with 50+ Voyagers.

At the outset, my wife (aged 66 with knee problem) and I (70 years) were apprehensive as to whether we would be able to undertake the Himachal Pradesh tour given mountainous and hilly area conditions. Well after horse-riding at Kufri, I could see from expressions on the face of my wife that she had got her confidence back and had almost forgotten her knee pain. Advantage of travelling with 50+ Voyagers is that all are of almost same age, group being almost on same wave length, customized visiting places, cohesiveness and careful planning. I recommend to my friends of above fifty to avail themselves of the facilities provided by the 50+ Plus Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club. I am sure you will agree that age is just a number.

3 Cheers 50+ Voyagers for arranging this wonderful tour to Kenya. One of the most amazing, satisfying and enjoyed tours to Kenya. Did not realise how one week just flew. Still living in the world of the wild animals and keep looking at all the pictures. Though it was a very rough terrain with no roads we did not feel it then. Was it the company we were in or just being amongst nature ? It was worth it and would love to take more tours with them. Going to Nagaland Hornbill Festival with 50+ Voyagers in December. Hats off to 50+ Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club for catering to us 60+

It was my 5th trip with 50+ Voyagers, when I went on a 8 day trip to Sri Lanka ! My first international! Everything was taken care well - My safety being a single lady, the company that I want, to share my views and experiences while travelling together with like minded, same aged men and women who are relaxed with no hassles of not getting leave from work place, and with relaxed mindset to enjoy life after finishing duties towards children.. what more you want? In the last trip to Srilanka, I found myself climbing 1700 steps to top of lion rock fort at 200ft height which I thought was unbelievable!

Letter from Europe

Guy Kinnings has a simple job as the new DP World Tour chief: Keep his 50-plus-year tour relevant

VIRGINIA WATER, ENGLAND - MARCH 25: Guy Kinnings, the European Tour Group's new Chief Executive poses for a portrait at the European Tour group head quarters at Wentworth Golf Club on March 25, 2024 in Virginia Water, England. Guy takes over from Keith Pelley as the DP World Tour Chief Executive on April 2nd 2024. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

LONDON — No one said it was going to be easy. And less than a month into his tenure as just the fifth Chief Executive in the European/DP World Tour’s more than 50 years of existence, Guy Kinnings isn’t having to look too far for problems that need solving. Predictably, one in particular is dominating the 60-year-old Englishman’s thoughts. Like everyone else at the sharp end of administration in professional golf, he is concerned that the current conflict between the game’s establishment and LIV Golf needs to be resolved. And resolved as soon as possible.

“I’ve got a lot of stuff in my ‘in-tray,” Kinnings says on Thursday during a session with various golf media. “But there is one topic that needs to get sorted first. If and when that happens, everything else will flow from there. The irony is that golf is such a healthy state in so many metrics—participation, interest levels—but until we get a solution and know what the future of the professional game is going to look like, everything else has to wait. It is the elephant in every room.

“All I want to do is get the right people round the table—PGA Tour Enterprises, Fenway Sports Group, Strategic Sports Group, the DP World Tour, the Saudi Public Investment Fund—I don’t know,” Kinnings continues. “But there is an intent to talk about what the future can look like. What does the product look like in 2026 and beyond? What is the pathway? But until we get the right people in the right room with the right intent, we are never going to work out a deal. That is what is needed right now. And it’s the same as in any business: don’t leave until you have deal done.”

To that end, Kinnings claims to be encouraged by the dealings he has so far had with Yassir Al-Rumayyan, chairman and governor of the PIF, the financial arm for the LIV Golf League.

“The Saudis will want to ensure that they do things properly,” Kinnings says. “Yassir is a very astute businessman. I have no doubt he will have weighed up the dynamics at play. But everything I have heard is that he wants to find a longer-term solution. If he believes in the good of the game, he will know that a split product in the long run is not good. He will know that as well as anyone. So it is essential that, in the long run, things have to be better for the professional game. The more we hear about (television viewing) numbers falling, the more it is clear that, if we don’t move quickly, there will be lasting damage. I don’t think Yassir wants there to be damage to the game. He loves the game.”

tours for 50 year olds

As to exactly what any deal should look like, Kinnings not surprisingly favors the model suggested by Rory McIlroy earlier this year, one that is “truly international.” By way of example, that could mean a “world tour” comprising, say, 20 events with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour “feeding” players into the newly created global circuit.

“I see a lot of sense in that,” Kinnings says. “What do the fans really want to see? They want to see the best players competing more often. So that model has appeal. But it is only part of the picture. If we are to find a solution, we need to be looking at integrating team golf in some way. That will satisfy what LIV has done. But it will also recognize that we all love team golf. Last year the Ryder Cup reminded us what golf at its best can look like. All I want to do is protect that. Our goal has to be to elevate everything.”

That can only happen if the leading U.S. players are prepared to travel outside their homeland. Despite much evidence to the contrary, Kinnings is optimistic on that front, pointing out that, historically, American superstars did their bit to promote the game worldwide. Which is true. In the past American superstars travelling helped create big events around the world. Arnold Palmer’s role in the resurrection of the Open Championship is one such example. Tiger Woods appearing regularly in Asia is another.

“The American players realizing that they will have to travel to enhance their brands is something they will have to compromise on,” Kinnings says. “If we all recognize that the game will be damaged without a solution I think the players will come round.”

Still, amidst all of the speculation, Kinnings is also cognizant of the fact that the DP World Tour does not have the loudest voice in any negotiations regarding the future of the professional game. A cynical observer might conclude that the DP World Tour will, whatever happens, simply do what the PGA Tour dictates. The pair are currently the constituent parts of a so-called “strategic alliance” that guarantees, amongst other things, record prize funds on the former European circuit for at least the next 13 years.

Prior to becoming DP World Tour chief, Kinnings was in charge or the Ryder Cup for the tour.

Andrew Redington

On the other side of that continuing debate, there are those Europeans who would not complain if Kinnings were to lead his members into a global circuit (minus the U.S.) alongside the PIF. All valid points, but whatever happens, Kinnings is quick to point out the experience the Old World circuit could bring to a truly worldwide tour.

“I don’t claim that I can make everything happen,” he says. “And I know we are characterized as the ‘third wheel’ in any negotiations. But I know that we have a voice in this. The reality is that the PGA Tour now has some very smart investors in Fenway Sports Group and the Strategic Sports Group. But we, through our strategic alliance, are working closely with the PGA Tour. We are working together on the end product. It’s a joint exercise. So practically, we are being listened to. I have dealt with the guys at Fenway, who were fascinated by the history of the DP World Tour and our internationalizing of the game. They know that we have the relationships around the world. We’ve built them for 50 years.

“Plus, two of the biggest financial institutions in the world want to invest in golf. Rory put it best when he said we need to find a way for them to do that. They clearly think golf works for them. Otherwise they wouldn’t be putting money in. So it’s our job to give them something that works for them and for the fans. We need to look forward, not back.”

Also heartening Kinnings is the news that Rory McIlroy is likely to re-join the PGA Tour Policy Board and become a director of PGA Tour Enterprises, meaning that there will be at least one European voice in that influential room.

“I know how much it took out of Rory originally,” says Kinnings, who served six years as the European Tour Group’s Deputy CEO, Chief Commercial Officer and Executive Director-Ryder Cup before taking on his new role April 2. “He worked on board meetings until 2-3 in the morning, then got up and played in pro-ams. And now he’s prepared to go back. His voice is really important.”

There are many voices though and Kinnings, responding to the notion that things need to start happening soon, comes close to adding a timetable if golf is to survive the current crisis.

“I hope getting it right happens in the next few months,” he says. “We know it has to be done ASAP. I don’t see too much changing in 2025. 2026 is when we will see significant changes. To do that we need 2025 to prepare. I’m not setting any deadlines. But to plan a new product for 2026 you really need to have it done by the end of this year. Everyone needs to be flexible and compromise. Once we have the right solution we need to move fast.”

The perks of travelling with Intrepid

A traveller dancing to a band playing local folk music in Bursa, Turkey

Authentic experiences with a local leader

It's all well and good sticking to the tourist trail, but anyone can Google that. We work exclusively with local leaders – because who better to show you the soul of a destination than someone who lives and breathes the culture? With insider knowledge of hidden hangouts, local legends and, most importantly, the dishes you won't find on the tourist menu, you'll go behind the scenes for a deeper, more culturally-rich experience.

A group of travellers making a toast at dinner in Menaggio, Italy

Small groups of ready-made friends

Travelling solo is fun, but we think it's even better with a small group of like-minded travellers just as eager to explore as you are. Our trips are for people of all ages and from all walks of life, from the rookie backpacker straight out of uni to retirees on a mission to tick off everything on their bucket lists. The diversity keeps things interesting – not to mention the new perspectives to uncover, stories to share and friendships to forge.

A traditional tram travelling up a narrow street in Lisbon

Safety, logistics and convenience

Travelling to a new place is exciting, but it can also be daunting. There's an itinerary to plan, accommodation to book and logistics to navigate – not to mention language barriers and border crossings. We're sure you could handle any situation, but it's reassuring to rock up and know that everything's been taken care of. Your leader will also keep you clued up on cultural do's and don'ts and help you avoid tourist traps so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Pick your own style of travel

Whether it's for finger-lickin' food, the freedom of the mountains or rare wildlife encounters, people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a range of travel themes and styles . From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), there's something to suit every Intrepid traveller.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

13-year-old dies of injuries from hit-and-run while riding his bike

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) - A 13-year-old Arizona boy who was struck by a driver in a hit-and-run while riding his bike nearly two weeks ago has died.

Glendale Police and the family of 13-year-old Elias Bizzle confirmed the teenager died from his injuries Tuesday. On April 11, he and some friends were out riding their bikes. Police say the group was crossing an intersection using the crosswalk when Elias was hit, KPHO reports .

The suspected driver, identified by police as 27-year-old Joshua Holbert, allegedly fled the scene in his Chevrolet Trailblazer, as friends and bystanders attempted to save Elias. The teenager was rushed to the hospital and put on life support but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Family gathered at the crash site last Saturday to pray for Elias. The teen’s mother, Victoria Bizzle, told KPHO at that time he suffered brain damage, road rash and a broken jaw and femur.

“It is pure torture to see your 13-year-old laying so helpless, and you can’t do nothing about it. You can’t do anything about it, just pray,” Bizzle said.

She added there was no excuse for the suspect to not stop and help her son.

“This monster turned my world upside down, and all I want is my son. I just want my son,” Bizzle said. “He didn’t deserve this. No one deserves this.”

In the days after the crash, police used traffic cameras and surveillance videos to track Holbert’s Trailblazer to an apartment complex. Court documents say the American flag that was attached to the vehicle at the time of the crash had been removed, and the vehicle was parked in such a way as to hide the damage.

Holbert eventually turned himself in, allegedly stating he was involved in the crash, didn’t help the victim and fled the scene, returning to his apartment, police said. He faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury.
