Cons of Cruising to Juneau: Limited Exploration Time

While cruising to Juneau is an experience filled with comfort and breathtaking views, it does come with a notable drawback: limited time to explore Alaska’s capital. Typically, cruise ships dock in Juneau for just a full day or sometimes even half a day, constraining the time you have to immerse yourself fully in the local culture, history, and natural beauty.

This time constraint means you need to plan strategically to make the most out of your visit. To help cruise passengers maximize their short stay, we have compiled a guide on Things to do in Juneau from a cruise ship . This guide is designed to ensure you experience the best of Juneau, from historical sites and cultural landmarks to natural wonders, within a limited timeframe.

Getting to Juneau – Final Thoughts

In this comprehensive guide, we’ve explored the various ways to get to Juneau, Alaska’s unique and scenic state capital. Whether you fly, sail on a cruise, or embark on a combination of ferry and car travel, each option offers distinct experiences and perspectives of the Alaskan wilderness.

Flying is the quickest route, with direct flights from cities like Seattle or Anchorage providing a swift and convenient way to reach Juneau. For those seeking a more scenic and leisurely approach, ferry travel from locations such as Bellingham or Ketchikan offers a closer look at Alaska’s breathtaking coastline and marine life.

On the other hand, cruising combines the luxury of a sea voyage with the excitement of exploring various ports along the Inside Passage, including Juneau. However, it’s important to note the constraints of specific travel methods, such as the limited time to explore Juneau when arriving by cruise ship.

In conclusion, getting to Juneau is integral to the Alaskan adventure. However, plan your trip ahead. Whichever path you choose, each promises a journey that is as memorable as the destination itself.

Customizing Tours

All of our tours are flexible and you can add, modify or exchange nights in destinations to suit your timetable and preferred routing. Thus, sometimes it will be necessary to observe ferry schedules, national park opening/closing dates etc. to match certain dates and/or departures. Please check also each itinerary online.

Our service generally includes the rental car, accommodation, applicable local taxes, ferry trips as scheduled, sightseeing as per itinerary, a detailed tour description, highway or road logs. Additional rental days or upgrade to a Mid and Full Size Car, Mini Van or Sport Utility Vehicles (4x4) are available. Advance Reservation

If you travel during the high season from the middle/end of June until the end of August we recommend booking as early as possible to avoid disappointments with sold out situations in highly frequented national parks and gateways - because the northern tour season is very short. The same applies in/around national holidays. Any hotel accommodation, rentals cars and ferry space must be definitely booked well in advance. Thus, tour operator such as our company may still have space on a short notice. Accordingly it is well worth to contact us.

Travel Month

The last two weeks of May, June and September are perfect months for a vacation in the Land of the Midnight Sun. The weather is usually stable and sunny with almost 24 hours of daylight. July and August are prime travel months and are obviously very busy.

Emergency Assistance

You can contact us in case of an emergency. We have a dedicated 24/7 helpline available for our guests.

Northern Lights Observation

Because of the long daylight hours it is uncommon to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) displays from mid May until mid August. The Aurora occurs mainly during the fall / winter months from September – April. Please refer also to our winter touring program.

Mary, Vancouver: We've just returned from our Alaska trip and have to tell you we had a great time! Everything went smoothly and we were well taken care of. Thank you so much for everything you did for us! One highlight of the tour was the Tracy Arm glacier cruise. Seeing the glacier was amazing, but we really loved seeing all the wildlife too. We saw humpback whales, orca, a black bear, mountain goats, bald eagles, and seals. There was also an earthquake (we didn’t even know that there had been one!) the night before, so the glacier was calving a lot while we watched. Very exciting and spectacular!

Top airline flying from Juneau to Anchorage

It was a great experience, although our seat was taken and we did not want to be rude and ask the person to move. Flight Attendants need to make sure that people should be in their assign sitting that are paid for. Other then that, we had a great flying experience with Alaska Airlines.

I thought every thing was good with the acceptation of the long layover between Seattle and the Tampa trip.

4 out of 4 flights cancelled or delayed. 5th trip with similar experience

I had never flown Alaska before but I definitely will again . Their app is great and the staff was nice , the plane was clean and comfortable . I've been trying to think of something to complain about but I honestly cannot think of anything . And Alaska itself - wow! Such beauty everywhere out there

It was really nice as always and i enjoyed the flight this time around wasn't as much turbulence.

Multiple delays and when we landed zero help getting to and making connecting flight.

entertainment (use your own hardware) was difficult and I don't like tiny tiny screens for movies. "we're locking the bathrooms" messge came as they locked them. how about a warning, e.g. we will lock bathrooms in 15 on our final approach...

It was filled with lots of delays and also onboarding delays that left a passenger next to me sick. Also, they miss labeled my bag for another passenger and temporarily lost my luggage.

First time having to use a wheelchair after a surgery. It was great and they were so very helpful and accommodating.

My flight was delayed in Fairbanks by 45 minutes with no explanation. My next flight was delayed 3 hours in Anchorage then cancelled altogether. Alaska Airlines App was not helpful as it auto-booked me to reach home 2 days later than planed. And I had to fly back to Fairbanks if I wanted to continue with that change. The only real assistance I received was from the Alaska Airlines gate counter supervisor. She was able to get me home one day earlier. This was my 1st experience with Alaska Airlines and it will be my last.

Getting To Juneau

Remoteness was never so accessible.

Juneau is Alaska’s closest “big” city to the Lower 48, which makes it surprisingly reachable any time of year. In just over a two-hour flight,  Alaska Airlines can get you here on one of their daily flights from Seattle or Anchorage, multiple direct flights arrive at Juneau's airport daily. Charter, regional and major airlines all serve Juneau International Airport , Southeast Alaska’s air transport hub.

Cruising remains the most popular way to explore the Inside Passage; Juneau is a port of call for large and small lines, alike. For the independent traveler, the state-run Alaska Marine Highway ferry system serves more than 30 coastal communities. A true adventure, the 1500-mile Alaska-Canadian Highway—aka the “ALCAN”—crosses some of the world’s wildest country. But of course, any road trip to Juneau necessitates a leg at sea; the only “road” in is the Alaska Marine Highway.

Although it is situated on the mainland, Juneau is not accessible by road directly. Given the rugged wilderness surrounding Juneau and sizeable icefields and ever-shifting glaciers, a road crossing is simply not feasible.

How to drive to Juneau, Alaska from mainland USA

The recommended route is taking the ferry from Bellingham to Juneau. This is the most convenient and relaxing way to make the trip and will give the best chance to experience the dramatic surroundings from the safety and comfort of the ferry.

You can drive a significant way along the 1,500-mile Alaska-Canadian Highway (ALCAN) which is renowned for its stunning scenery, and given its location is surprisingly well maintained. The ALCAN connects Canada and Alaska, starting at Dawson Creek, British Columbia stretching all the way to Delta Junction but does not lead to Juneau.

Leaving the Alaska Highway at Watson Lake and heading west to Skagway allows the option of driving a significant part of the route to Juneau. This will be a memorable drive, giving the chance to travel on the iconic Alaska Highway, one of the most scenic drives in the world.

If you are making the journey from the US, then you can drive to Bellingham, 90 miles north of Seattle on the I-5 N, and then take the ferry to Juneau.

Traveling from Canada, you can also drive to Bellingham from Vancouver. Alternatively, driving through the heart of British Columbia to Prince Rupert on the west coast will allow you to take a ferry to Juneau.

It is possible to drive from Anchorage and Fairbanks joining the ALCAN at Delta Junction and passing Destruction Bay and Kluane National Park and Reserve before arriving at Haines Junction where you'll join the Haines Highway for a little under 3 hours before arriving at the port of Haines.

It is possible to fly to Juneau and the International airport is served by Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines. However, flights from the US are only available from Seattle and Tacoma, and the only other flights are internal flights within Alaska.

House and Senate aim to provide certainty for home-school families after judge’s ruling

travel anchorage to juneau

Sen. Löki Tobin, I-Anchorage, gives comments at the Alaska State Capitol in Juneau on March 18. (Marc Lester / ADN)

JUNEAU — Alaska House and Senate committees on Friday introduced bills intended to allow home-school and correspondence programs to continue operating constitutionally.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Adolf Zeman earlier in the month struck down as unconstitutional two statutes enacted in 2014 that allowed public funds to be spent at private and religious schools in Alaska. Those statutes explicitly prevented the state Board of Education from enacting regulations restricting how home-school allotments are used. The Legislature’s attorneys suggested earlier in the week that a relatively simple change of state law could resolve the court’s concerns.

The Senate Education Committee, chaired by Sen. Löki Tobin, D-Anchorage, introduced a bill Friday that explicitly prohibits state funds from being used at private schools. It also requires stricter oversight and reporting on how home-school funds are spent.

”The stipulations in the legislation provide those guardrails so that there will not be, and should not be, unconstitutional expenditures,” she said.

The two home-school statutes the court struck down were proposed by then-Sen. Mike Dunleavy and adopted in 2014. They have been increasingly used by parents to pay for tuition at private and religious schools. But the extent of the practice is not fully known.

The Senate bill mentions that some private tutoring could be allowed. But it does prohibit public funds being used to pay for one or two classes at a private or religious school, which had been seen as a gray area after the court’s decision.

The state Board of Education, which regulates education in Alaska, would be directed to create “a more rigid approval program” for course materials to ensure they’re constitutional, Tobin said. The board is next scheduled to meet in Kotzebue in June.

Under the Senate bill, parents of public school students would be prevented from opting their children out of statewide assessments. According to the state Department of Education and Early Development , 93.6% of students at neighborhood schools took recent statewide tests . Around 19% of correspondence students took the same assessments.

”It is our obligation to ensure that our public education programs are being held accountable. This is one of the strongest accountability tools that we have in our toolkit,” Tobin said about statewide testing.

The House Education Committee introduced a similar bill Friday, with prohibitions on public funds being used at private schools. But it would allow parents to opt out of state assessments.

Soldotna Republican Rep. Justin Ruffridge, co-chair of the House Education Committee, said he was concerned about children in remote areas needing to travel for testing. But he acknowledged that could potentially be done online.

“I think that’ll be a good discussion going forward,” he said.

The House and Senate bills would both require parents to return unused home-school funds at the end of the school year. Parents are currently allowed to keep those funds, and with little oversight, critics have said it could be ripe for abuse.

Ruffridge said he heard from “a ton of folks” who save up their allotments for more expensive purchases, including to pay for college classes during high school. The House bill would allow unspent funds to be used through 2030.

One unknown factor is whether the court’s decision will be stayed, and for how long. The state of Alaska on April 22 requested that Zeman’s decision be stayed until the Alaska Supreme Court potentially issues its own verdict, which could take months or even years. The plaintiffs — several parents and teachers — asked for a stay until the end of June to avoid disruptions in the current school year. But they opposed an indefinite pause in the court’s decision, saying that would essentially allow unconstitutional spending to continue.

The House on Wednesday narrowly approved a non-binding resolution that called for a stay until the end of June 2025. With less than three weeks left in the legislative session, multiple lawmakers said they doubted whether they could pass a home-school bill in time.

Tobin said she was “very optimistic” that a majority of lawmakers want to provide certainty for home-school students before the start of the next school year. Ruffridge said he was optimistic that the House bill could be part of a broader education package.

“I’m just less optimistic that it would pass by itself,” he said.

Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor said in mid-April that Zeman’s decision was “broad” and that it would be “a shot in the dark” for the Dunleavy administration to propose a statutory fix. Attorneys for the plaintiffs have disagreed, saying the decision was narrowly focused on prohibiting state funds from being used at private schools.

In response to Zeman’s decision, Republican House members proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would eliminate the prohibition on public funds being used at private and religious schools.

The constitutional amendment, which is identical to one proposed by Gov. Dunleavy when he was serving in the Senate in 2013, had its first hearing this past Wednesday. Homer Republican Rep. Sarah Vance said Tuesday that she introduced the constitutional amendment to start a longer-term conversation about how education should be funded in Alaska.

“I do not want to have an expectation that the Legislature would pass this in the next month,” she said Tuesday.

The Senate’s education bill has been scheduled for its first committee hearing Monday. The House bill is set to first be heard Wednesday. The legislative session must end by midnight on May 15.

The 5 best places to live in Alaska

Living in Alaska is a dream for anyone who considers themselves a thrill seeker, adventurer or outdoor enthusiast. You can experience the stunning beauty of the Northern Lights, scale the peaks of Denali and seek out humpback whales, orcas and sea lions on Glacier Bay. You can even visit the striking Mendenhall Glacier, a 12-mile wonder that emerged from the Little Ice Age around 3,000 years ago.

The natural beauty here is utterly unparalleled, but a surprising number of modern amenities coexist amid Alaska’s wild and rugged backcountry. Oil production, fishing, timber and research development rank high in the state’s present-day economy, and the cost of living might be more affordable than you think. Tack on the added bonuses of no state income tax or sales tax, and you can begin to understand why more and more people are eager to make their home in The Last Frontier.

Known as a haven for adventurous spirits seeking a different way of life, Anchorage is home to towering mountain ranges, renowned salmon fishing, majestic glaciers and an abundance of outdoor hiking and cycling.

Residents here have access to all manner of outdoor activities as well as art galleries, craft breweries and live musical and theatrical performances. But it doesn’t come cheap.

The cost of living in Anchorage is higher than many comparable cities of its size in the Lower 48, primarily due to the logistics that go into delivering foods and services to the area. Nevertheless, the job market offers opportunities in several of its major economic sectors—military, oil and gas, government and tourism top the list. Secondary industries include finance, construction, education and healthcare. And, as a cherry on top, Anchorage is known for being a welcoming and inclusive city.

What is special about Anchorage?

Ask any local what is special about Anchorage, and their answers will likely include the breathtaking scenery and chances to get up close and personal with nature. The city is tucked between the Chugach Mountains, which is the most frequently climbed mountain in the state, and Cook Inlet, which boasts a history that is believed to stretch back as far as 10,000 B.C. These two perimeters afford residents innumerable opportunities to explore The Last Frontier’s natural wonders. At the same time, the city’s urban amenities invite them to enjoy everything from fine dining and museums to theaters and a multitude of local shops.

Badger, a suburb, lies on the outskirts of Fairbanks, making it a suitable option for anyone seeking employment in the city but a more rural life at home. The population sits at just over 19,000 people, with a median household income of around $93,000.

While this charming town may be small, you won’t want for activities. Downtown is home to museums, local shops and galleries, several restaurants and coffee shops where locals gather to enjoy a morning drink and share the news. Suppose you fancy a more tourist approach to the area? In that case, you can spend your time discovering the scenic outskirts of the city, or you could take a short drive to the nearby cities of Fairbanks or the North Pole and spend a leisurely weekend exploring a variety of local attractions and destinations.

What is the climate in Badger?

If you’re considering moving to Alaska, you already know it’s cold. Badger has what is known as a subarctic climate, which understandably translates to very cold winters. Temperatures often drop below freezing. A calendar year can see averages that range from -13°F to 73°F. Summers are considered long and comfortable since they rarely get above 80°F, while the winter months see substantial cloud coverage and snowfall.

From the archives (2019): Why you should chuck it all and move to Alaska

Fairbanks swings between the second and third most populated metropolitan area in Alaska, and for good reason. The renowned “Golden Heart City” is rich in history, culture, and economic opportunity, as well as the undeniable draw to get outside and explore the rugged Alaskan landscape.

Tourists flock to this beautiful city in the summertime to go berry picking, ride the historical sternwheeler paddle boats, visit hot springs, float down the Chena River or pan for gold. Winter brings people from all over the world who are eager to experience the magic of the aurora borealis. Residents enjoy these activities, too, of course, as well as local pastimes like attending a Goldpanners baseball game, sampling locally made craft brews and spirits and going to the World Eskimo Indian Olympics. There are plenty of Alaskan adventures waiting to be had in Fairbanks.

Is it expensive to live in Fairbanks?

Hawaii often tops the charts as one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S., but Alaska comes in sixth. The cost of living in Fairbanks is around 27% higher than the national average. A large percentage of that number goes toward utilities, which makes sense when you consider the harsh winters and logistics required to ship in food and other products that aren’t locally grown or manufactured. On the other hand, housing is undeniably more affordable in Fairbanks than in Anchorage. First-time home buyers in the state are more likely to get their foot in the door when searching for a home in the Golden Heart City.

The state’s capital city is nestled along the Gastineau Channel and Alaskan panhandle and actually sits on one of the largest wilderness areas in the nation. This understandably gives you a front-row seat to everything from grizzly bears feasting on fish in the summer to the striking views of the Northern Lights in the winter. Explore mesmerizing glaciers, catch the world’s best salmon, hike the peaks or bike the trails. You will find no shortage of thrill-seeking adventure here. And, if you’re doing a little soul-searching, Juneau is a great place to plant roots.

Visitors may come to Juneau for the outdoor adventure, but many find themselves eager to put down roots soon after. Everyone knows the Alaskan landscape looks like a spread from a National Geographic magazine, but you might be surprised to discover all the economic and career opportunities available as well. Government, maritime, research and development, mining and healthcare are among the top local industries, but many residents use Juneau as a home base for remote business as well.

Is it always cold in Juneau?

You already know winters in Alaska are cold and snowy. But Juneau has a reputation for more mild winters, at least when compared with the state’s more rugged backcountry. It’s uncommon to see anything below 20ºF. Summers are often described as pleasant and enjoyable, too, with temperatures usually topping out in the low 70s.

Don’t miss: Crammed with tourists, Alaska’s capital wonders what will happen as its magnificent glacier recedes

Ketchikan began as a Tlingit fishing settlement thanks to its unrivaled salmon population. Nearby mines made it attractive to early pioneers, as well, although the town didn’t see substantial growth until the Klondike Gold Rush between 1896 and 1899. This ushered around 100,000 prospectors into the Yukon region and beyond, and it played a vital role in the expansion and development of Ketchikan.

Fast forward to today, and this beautiful, albeit small, city is home to around 8,000 people. The people have a reputation for being warm and welcoming, and the land is known throughout the state as the Rain Capital of Alaska, averaging around 141 inches a year. Ketchikan is accessible by boat or air and is a key player in maritime industries like fishing and shipping.

What is there to do in Ketchikan?

Hunting and fishing are common pastimes among many Alaskans, and that’s especially true in this region. Ketchikan is actually called the Salmon Capital of the World. In addition to world-class salmon fishing, you can also find everything from blacktail deer and mountain goats to black bears. Non-hunters and fishermen like to take advantage of the countless hiking trails, often leading to scenic lake views or waterfalls. You can also enjoy the vibrant art scene downtown or visit the  Southeast Alaska Discovery Center  or  Totem Heritage Center .
