The 8 Best Hostels in Porto

Selina is one of the best hostels in Porto.

Choosing a hostel in Porto that suits your needs during your stay in Porto can be a daunting task. My guide to the best hostels in Porto will assist you with this.

Porto, the city known for its stately bridges and the production of port wine, is also a haven for travellers seeking a blend of culture, history, and modernity. Amidst its cobbled streets and baroque architecture lies a vibrant hostel scene that caters to every type of traveller.

From solo adventurers to social butterflies, Porto's hostels offer unique experiences, blending traditional Portuguese hospitality with contemporary comforts.  In this guide, I'll walk you through the 8 best hostels in Porto, each offering an unforgettable stay.

Quick Introduction to Hostels in Porto

Porto has many outstanding hostels some of which are among the best hostels in Europe . According to  Hostelworld , Porto has 62 hostels so finding one that meets all of your needs can be difficult.

Porto has many different types of hostels from youth hostels to backpacker hostels to boutique and party hostels that cater to all budgets. Selina is the only major European hostel chain to have a location in Porto.

Here are some of the things you should consider before booking a hostel in Porto:

  • Prices : Porto is one of the cheapest European cities in Western Europe for backpackers. A bed in a dorm room starts at €10 per night (normally large dorm rooms), but expect to pay €15 to €22 per night in a medium-sized dorm room (6 to 10 beds). Prices at the weekend and holiday periods will be at least 50% more.
  • Location - Porto is a medium-sized city but it's best to stay in a central location close to the top sites and the best nightlife. (All hostels my guide below are in central locations.)
  • Amenities/Services : Every hostel in Porto provides free Wi-Fi, and a few include breakfast in the price. If you require more specialized services you have to do your research to find the hostel that best matches your requirements.
  • Staff : In Porto, the majority of hostels have excellent staff. They are usually very friendly and will give you wonderful recommendations for restaurants, bars, and clubs, among other things. However, my recommendation is to read the latest reviews  to ensure that the hostel you select has friendly and helpful employees, as rude or unhelpful staff might ruin your hostel experience.

Travel Europe on a Budget

The best hostels in porto | the backpacker’s guide to porto’s hostels.

Our picks for the best hostels in Porto. The best places to stay when traveling on a budget.

Hostels & Lodging

travel and life hostel porto

Portugal is one of the hottest destinations in Europe and Porto is quicking becoming a favorite spot for budget travelers seeking great deals. And these low prices have turned Porto into one of the best hostel scenes in Europe so there are multiple amazing hostels (and a few to avoid). So, to help make your decision easier, I’ve assembled a list of the best hostels in Porto.

Average Porto Hostel Prices

Porto is still a relatively cheap travel destination so you’ll find plenty of affordable hostels. Popular, well-rated hostels tend to be slightly more expensive than lower-quality hostels and prices rise during the busy travel season so book early for the best price/selection.

Shared Room Hostel Prices in Porto

A bed in a well-rated Porto hostel costs €20 to €35/per night with an average price of around €28/per night for the cheapest option in a shared dorm room. Most hostels have multiple room configurations so you’ll typically pay more for rooms with fewer beds.

Private Room Hostel Prices in Porto

The price of a private hostel room in Porto range from €50 to €145/night with an average of around €90/night. A private room sleeps two so keep that in mind when calculating the price per person.

Prices constantly fluctuate, so I recommend checking Hostelworld  to get exact prices for your dates.

Porto Hostel Considerations

travel and life hostel porto

Porto has around 40 hostels and I’d consider that 14 of those hostels are great potential options. There are multiple factors to keep in mind when evaluating which hostel to book but here are a few things to consider:

Tourist Taxes

All hostels in Porto are required to charge a Municipal Tourist tax of €2 per person, per night. Some hostels will include this in the price but some will have you pay it at check-in.

The Best Hostels in Porto Go Early

The best-rated hostels and the cheapest hostels in Porto are often booked well in advance—especially in the summer and during weekends. I recommend booking early if possible.

Check The Hostel Location

Porto is a small city so most hostels are located in the center of town but there are a few outliers that are located further out. I suggest double-checking before you book to make sure your hostel isn’t far from the city center.

The Hostel’s Vibe

Like any popular city, Porto will have multiple hostels and caters to a subset of travelers—some have a party vibe, some have a chilled vibe, some have a quiet vibe, some feel like a hotel, some are good for families, etc.

It’s best to find a hostel that fits your travel style so I suggest reading the review section of Hostelworld to see what past travelers say about the hostel’s vibe.

Check-In Times and Cleaning Times

Many hostels in Porto have late check-in times (around 2 pm-4 pm) but nearly all will let you store your bags if you arrive before check-in—I recommend bringing your own padlock for a locker. Other hostels might have a period during the early afternoon when you’re not allowed to be in your room so the staff can clean.

Age Restrictions

Some hostels cater to families and school groups—so book an 18+ hostel if you don’t want to be surrounded by a slew of middle school kids. Also, family-friendly hostels tend to attract an older crowd so you probably won’t find the typical “backpacker” experience in these places (but you might find more peace and quiet).

Read The Cancellation Policy

Each hostel has its own cancellation policy so it’s something to know before booking as you might be charged for the first night if you cancel.

HOW I EVALUATE HOSTELS

  • Overall Quality:  I take a holistic look at the hostel to see the positives and negatives. My goal is to find amazing hostels that are still affordable.
  • Location:  Most hostels listed in this guide will be centrally located (but I’ll make a note if it isn’t)
  • Price:  I try to filter out the super-expensive and the worst-rated hostels to help find the best price-to-quality ratio.
  • Vibe/Atmosphere:  Every hostel has a personality. Some are party hostels and some are quiet. We try to note the atmosphere so you can find a place to stay that matches your travel style. Take a look at the reviews to get a better idea of the hostel’s vibe.
  • Past Guest Reviews:  Every guest has a different experience so we look at the good and the bad. We suggest you take a few minutes to read prior reviews.

I also encourage you to check out  Hostelworld  to do a bit of searching for yourself.

NOTE: All prices listed below are the cheapest option available during the busy (i.e. expensive) season. Prices will often be 20%+ cheaper during the slower seasons.

Hostel One Ribeira

travel and life hostel porto

Hostel One Ribeira is the best party hostel in Porto (it’s also one of the best overall hostels in Porto) so it’s an excellent choice for anyone wanting to meet other people. They go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome with tons of free social activities like cooking weekly family dinners, organizing walking tours, and more.

They also have a nice terrace and multiple common areas so you can find somewhere to work, relax, party, etc.

And, like any great hostel, Hostel One Ribeira has a fully equipped kitchen so you can make your own meals (plus, kitchens are always a sociable place to meet people).

Seriously, put Hostel One Ribeira at the top of your list of hostels to check out.

  • €28-€40 during the week
  • €32-€50 on the weekend

Gallery Hostel Porto

travel and life hostel porto

The Gallary Hostel is an ideal hostel if you’re looking for a quiet, super clean, safe, and comfortable stay. It’s a fairly new hostel with modern amenities, a cool boutique designer feel, and a nice breakfast—they also cool a nightly Portuguese dinner (which is around €10).

They have a nice summer terrace, winter garden, and on-site bar/restaurant.

The Gallary Hostel has a “hotel” feel so isn’t the place to stay if you’re looking for a social atmosphere—i.e. don’t expect to meet many other travelers.

  • €26-€32 during the week
  • €30-€34 on the weekend

Rivoli Cinema Hostel

travel and life hostel porto

Rivoli Cinema Hostel is a former “top five small hostels worldwide” winner thanks to its great location that’s within walking distance of Porto’s best sights and its character-filled 1930s Art Deco-style building. Rivoli Cinema Hostel has a large rooftop terrace with a swimming pool and they do frequent pub crawls and free city tours—all of which help create a very social atmosphere. They also have a fully equipped kitchen.

The hostel beds are comfortable and they have curtains for privacy. The staff also does a nice job keeping the hostel clean.

  • €30-€32 during the week
  • €32-€34 on the weekend

Porto Spot Hostel

travel and life hostel porto

Porto Spot Hostel is one of the best hostels in Porto and it ticks the boxes for everything you want in a hostel—it has friendly staff, a nice location, a social atmosphere, and modern amenities. The hostel is just large enough to be social without feeling like you’re living on top of the other guests.

Porto Spot Hostel is a favorite pick for solo travelers and for anyone looking to meet fellow travelers because they have multiple social events like nightly group dinners, walking tours, and pub crawls. This helps build a “home-like atmosphere” but I wouldn’t call this a “party hostel” so you can still get some sleep.

They provide free breakfast and they have a fully equipped kitchen so you can cook your own meals.

  • €22-€24 during the week
  • €28-€38 on the weekend

PILOT Design Hostel & Bar

travel and life hostel porto

PILOT Design Hostel has been the most popular hostel in Porto for multiple years in a row so it should be at the top of your list. PILOT is a modern hostel with a friendly staff and fun atmosphere so it’s easy to meet your fellow travelers. They also have a fun 24h bar/lounge, and a walking tour (some guests mentioned getting a free drink on arrival as well). There is also a cheap breakfast at the hostel every morning.

I wouldn’t consider this a full-on “party hostel” but the bar/lounge does get very lively in the evening.

PILOT Design Hostel is located in Porto’s historical center so you’re only two minutes from great nightlife, restaurants, historical sights, etc.

  • €20-€35 during the week
  • €20-€35 on the weekend

The House of Sandeman Hostel & Suites

travel and life hostel porto

The House of Sandeman Hostel is a boutique hostel that has a hotel vibe while still maintaining a social atmosphere. It’s not a party “backpacker” hostel but they have an on-site bar/lounge where the staff organizes several activities so it’s more lively than some other boutique hostels.

Guests give House of Sandeman Hostel excellent reviews for being clean and for the large, comfortable beds. But most people comment how the beds a kind of shaky so they shake when other guests move around. Otherwise, The House of Sandeman Hostel is a great choice.

  • €22-€25 during the week
  • €24-€27 on the weekend

The Passenger Hostel

travel and life hostel porto

The Passenger Hostel is located at São Bento Train Station—which is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site. You’re literally right in the middle of the city so everything is right out the front door.

The hostel is newly renovated so it has modern amenities while preserving a ton of the building’s character.

The beds are comfortable and their bathrooms get high praise from guests (which isn’t often the case for hostels). There is also a kitchen if you want to make your own food.

The Passenger Hostel has a laidback atmosphere with a nice bar/lounge area and the staff organizes nightly activities for the guests. Past guests mention that it’s not an overly social hostel but you can still find other travelers to hang out with if you want.

  • €27-€30 during the week
  • €30-€33 on the weekend

Nice Way Porto Hostel

travel and life hostel porto

Nice Way Porto is another highly-rated hostel in Porto that has an excellent location that’s only 5 minutes from the train station and a nice variety of room configurations (from dorms to private en-suites with twin and double beds). The rooms are equipped with modern details like bunk lights, large bunks, and lockers.

Nice Way Porto has an on-site bar (that has a half-price happy hour) and a fully-equipped kitchen so that helps create a welcoming atmosphere.

  • €20-€25 during the week
  • €23-€28 on the weekend

Porto Wine Hostel

travel and life hostel porto

Porto Wine Hostel is all about… wait for it… Porto wine and you’ll be treated to a free glass when you check in to the hostel. The amenities are modern, the architecture is super cool, the beds are comfortable, and the staff does a nice job keeping the hostel clean. They also have a self-catering kitchen.

One of the main draws to the Porto Wine Hostel is the location—it’s located on one busiest nightlife streets in Porto. So if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room in the back because the street-facing rooms are noisy on the weekends when everyone is out on the street. The hostel also it’s own small bar in the lobby with cheap drinks.

  • €25-€31 during the week
  • €28-€34 on the weekend

Other Porto Hostels Worth Checking Out

travel and life hostel porto

Porto has so many quality hostels that it’s hard to narrow down to the “best.” That’s why I’ve included a few other honorable mentions that still get high ratings but maybe they’re either so new that they don’t have a ton of ratings yet or maybe they don’t quite crack the best-of-the-best for a minor reason.

Overview: Best Hostels by Traveler Type

1. The Passenger Hostel (green, modern 5 Star Hostel)

Are you ready for a truly exceptional hostel that takes hosteling to a brand new level? We bring you The Passenger Hostel , our only 5 Star Hostel in Porto.

It’s located in one of the most beautiful train stations in the world; Sao Bento Station. The shared and private accommodation is decorated with vintage furniture, blended with contemporary design.

If we would need to pick a room of all our 5 Star Hostels for competing with a 5 Star Hotel – we would pick the Luxury Suite of The Passenger Hostel Porto!

Good to know : The Passenger offers lower rates on their official website. Read our review for the details .

The Passenger Hostel in Porto - the 5 Star Hotel in Porto, Portugal - that is actually a hostel

Is there a Kitchen too? Yes, you have a huge, proper and fully equipped kitchen under the roof. You can cook up your own meals, no problem. Did you already see the unique design of the private room options?! They’re so spacious!

Alongside these private spaces, there are male and female only dorms – there will be no sexism at Passenger. Of course you can also expect mixed dorms for those that like to mingle.

To accommodate the possible 123 guests, there are two big, equipped kitchens on site. We recommend using the one on the 3rd floor as it incorporates a large living room, plasma TV and music. Don’t forget that this is where breakfast is served each morning. Yes, it’s free!

But ok, what’s more exciting than a kitchen? A bar and lounge! Open to the public from 9am to 6:30pm, it then becomes exclusively paying guests only. Head here for a drink and get to know your roommates.

Important : There is a curfew at 24:00. You can always enter and leave the hostel of course. There is a security, making sure everything is safe.

What about the location of The Passenger? We call it PERFECT! You will be staying literally inside the Sao Bento Train Station. It is the heart of the city. You have the Clerigos Tower Porto in just 5 minutes walking distance, as well as the famous Livraria Lello – The “Harry Potter Book Shop”. From here you can even walk over to the famous Luís I Bridge and the board walk.

Super epic insider knowledge : Right next door you have a fantastic restaurant, called Tabapento . This might be the best restaurant in Porto. It is slightly more expensive than the average; but oh boy…the food (and desserts) is out of this world.

Who stays at The Passenger Hostel?

You find everything from Solo Female Travelers, to social couples, business men and even families. Since the dorms and sleeping areas are separated from the common areas, you can sleep quietly at night. And if you fancy, head down to the bar and play some board games or just socialize. The bar downstairs is the best place to socialize and meet. Get a beer or a port wine from the bar.

It is the top choice for:

  • Female Solo Travellers

2. PILOT Design Hostel & Bar

PILOT Design Hostel & Bar is a super duper hostel in Porto, and one you definitely have to check out!

We love the confidence they hold about their accommodation:

“Modern, Super Fun, Comfortable, Clean, Perfectly Located at Historical Center and Bar & Lounge 24H Open. We will change the way you see hostels!”

The bar-lounge is awesome for socialising, working, relaxing, reading a book… you name it! For added fun grab one of the guitars and play some music to add to the wonderful atmosphere.

Otherwise the triple private room is a good option for travelling friends or small families. Privacy curtains are included, and the triple room even has a sofa and a seating area which is ideal for getting some online work done.

Location: PILOT Hostel is 6 minutes’ walk from Aliados Metro Station. Praça de Carlos Alberto square is 3 minutes’ walk away and Avenida dos Aliados, home to the city hall, is 10 minutes’ walk. Porto’s Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport is 18 km.

The Simple Dorms at The Wine Porto Hostel, best hostel in Porto for Backpackers

Best Hostels in Porto for Solo Travellers

As a solo traveler you are probably looking for a safe, clean and social place. It should be easy to meet and the hostel should have the proper setup for that special hostel vibe we all love.

As mentioned before, as a Solo Traveller we highly recommend The Passenger Hostel. We stayed here, met a bunch of solo-travelers, and we all hang out the days we spent in Porto together. Fun times!

Alongside The Passenger Hostel and Porto Wine Hostel , we’ve found another great option for solo travellers in Porto.

Welcome to Gallery Hostel Porto Portugal .

This Eco-friendly and neat hostel has facilities and a level of cleanliness that matches the best hotels on offer. It’s the friendly staff that will make you feel welcome and relaxed, and the free walking tour that will break the ice with fellow travellers.

There’s a bi-monthly changing of art exhibitions here, as well as concerts and other artistic initiatives. Choose between intimate 4 or 6-bed mixed dorms and get excited for the free breakfast – it includes scrambled eggs!

Gallery Hostel London is located between the art district and nightlife neighborhood, a 10-15 minute walk from the centre. Personally, we prefer staying inside the city center, like with The Passenger.

Gallery Hostel is one of the best hostels in Porto, Portugal

Of course, there are always cheap hostels all around. And certainly there are cheaper hostels in Porto Portugal than the ones we listed here. We think, it’s not worth it to go with the cheapest hostel out in Porto.

Prices are very reasonable in Porto. The difference between a cheap hostels and a nice one is usually 1-2€ ($1-2) per night, and a lot of amenities are not included. This can be breakfast or linen. keep in mind a bad location far away from the city center costs you more in transport. The best place to stay in Porto is really the city center. You will save money on transport, as many sights are in a walking distance, and it will be easy to find good places to eat and drink (also cheap options).

Good to know : The difference in quality for 1€-2€ more (or less) is actually insane. Paying 1€ less per night in a cheap hostel in Porto could easy come with a bigger expense in transport.

Rule of Thumb : Never go with the cheapest hostels in Europe. Always pay a tiny bit more, and you will save more money than you thought. Linen, towels and breakfast can be expensive in some cities in Europe.

However, if you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you wanna save every penny, there are ways to find the cheapest places to stay in Porto.

  • Open Hostelworld and search for Porto
  • Order the listing by price

Here you go. It is simple. Yet again, we recommend to “invest” 1-2€ more per night. That tiny difference goes a long way and you will feel and see the difference in hostel quality.

Still looking for hostel or albergue in Porto? Well, we have given you the best neighborhood to stay in Porto Portugal but if you are still looking for more, here are more hostels that you should consider. Hostel Portugal Porto is always better compared to Porto hotel if you will ask us because staying and backpacking at a hostel is quite an experience. Try and you’ll love it!

This post is an evidence and proves that you need to pay more attention to what you suggest because it attacks your reputation. You should have slept there and have a clear experience, which clearly didn’t happen. Since when hostels with bedbugs and rude staff, rated under 8 are part of the list of best hostels? Ask booking, TripAdvisor and Kayak.

Thanks for your comment, we are open for criticism. We have stayed in all suggested hostels personally! Last time we have been to Porto, we have stayed in The Passenger and Gallery Hostel, for instance.

You mention a suggested hostel has a rating of lower than 8; that was surprising for me since Portugal has high hostel standards. So below 8 is pretty bad for Portugal and Porto! I have checked again every single hostel we mention and personally know, and the “worst” rating on Booking.com is 8.6! You are absolutely right, we should only recommend hostels we stayed at and enjoyed – this is exactly what we do. I invite you to check other “best hostel” guides; you will see a massive difference in local knowledge. I also sent you a private email, I really want to improve all guides always.

Last but not least, you really pushed me over the edge for finally writing an extensive article on bed bugs in hostels. It is a big topic and there is some myths around it that I want to address. So thank you for this and stay tuned, it’ll be published soon.

Safe travels and take care, Matt

' src=

I’ve already written about the best neighbourhoods to stay in Porto , as well as about the best romantic hotels and the best family hotels . But it was clearly missing an option for travellers on a budget, or simply looking to meet new people. Therefore on this article you’ll get to know everything about the Top 10 best hostels in Porto and what’s great about each hostel. Enjoy!

And the best hostels in Porto are…

The bluesock hostels porto.

bluesock hostel porto private bedroom

The Bluesock Hostels Porto is not only of one the best hostels in Porto but, I dare to say, one of the best ones in Europe. First of all, the Bluesock Hostels Porto is simply massive. The common areas are huge, as you can see above. It has a wide sitting room, with a wall with plenty of activities to do in Porto during the week. It also has a lively lounge area, with a proper bar, vending machines and plenty of space to sit. Oh, and a giant – really giant – TV screen to watch football games. It has double beds on dormitories, a budget option for couples who want to stay in a hostel in Porto but cannot afford a private bedroom. Naturally, if you want to have some privacy this hostel also has spacious double bedrooms and twin bedrooms with a private bathroom. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you want to walk to the riverside and see the beautiful D. Luis bridge. From the Bluesock Hostels Porto  it is also very easy to walk to the Port wine cellars , on the other side of the river. Moreover, the Stock Exchange Palace and the church of St. Francis are just 5min walking distance. How to get there São Bento station is a 15 minutes walking distance from the BlueSocks Hostel, always climbing up. It is a bit hard to climb all the way to the subway station with your luggage, I won’t lie to you!

The House of Sandeman

elegant double bedroom sandeman hostel porto

The House of Sandeman has recently been awarded as the “Best of wine tourism in Porto” in 2019, and no wonder why. This is one of the very few thematic hostels in Porto and it revolves around wine – in fact, Sandeman is the name of one of the most famous Port wine brands. What I particularly like about The House of Sandeman is that is has a huge living room where it is very easy to make new friends. It also has a nice restaurant with live music on specific days of the week. Moreover, the buffet breakfast is terrific! This hostel in Porto has both double bedrooms and large dormitories where each bed resembles the structure of a wood barrel. However, as funny as it looks, I don’t think each bed has enough privacy. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you want to get an amazing view over the Douro river. How to get there: Unfortunately there is no subway connection close by, so I suggest you to take an Uber from São Bento train station.

The Passenger Hostel

lounge passenger hostel porto

The Passenger Hostel opened a couple of years ago and it quickly became the reference when it comes to the best hostels in Porto. No wonder why: it has magnificent common areas overlooking São Bento train station, some amazing dormitories which include a small living room inside it, and large lockers. It also has lovely lofts for families, which makes it ideal for families with kids – but you still have to use the shared kitchen, which not all families might feel up to. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you want to be close to the main city attractions, notably the famous MacDonald’s on Allies’ Avenue, São Bento train Station, the Lello bookstore and the Clérigos church. It also has a subway station literally across the street so it is really easy to get by from the Passenger hostel. How to get there: the The Passenger Hostel is literally inside the São Bento train station, so it couldn’t be easier to get there!

Selina Porto

double bedroom selina porto

Selina is indeed one of the best hostels in Porto, but it is so much more than that! After all, it provides both accommodation as well as daily activities and a really cool garden where loads of events take place, like jam sessions, Lindy hop classes, yoga, you name it. Therefore, it is a great place to mingle with other tourists as well as locals. The location is superb, right next to the nightlife district in Porto (yes, Selina is recommended for young people). How to get there: this hostel is a 5 minutes walking distance from Aliados subway station.

Rivoli Cinema Hostel

rivoli cinema hostel pool view

What I like the most about Rivoli Cinema Hostel is its amazing rooftop overlooking the city. It is such a nice chilling area where you can relax after a day walking the steep streets of Porto! The living area on the ground floor is also gorgeous and spacious. I did not like the dormitories as I found then too small and simplistic (no curtains, for instance), but the staff is very friendly and everything is spotlessly clean. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you want to be close to the main city attractions. It also has tons of restaurants, ice cream shops and grocery stores nearby, so it is really convenient. How to get there: the subway stations Aliados and São Bento are 5min walking distance from Rivoli Cinema Hostel in Porto.

Gallery Hostel

gallery hostel porto dorms

The Gallery Hostel wonderfully combines the traditional Portuguese architecture with some modern elements, creating one of the best hostels in Porto. It has large dormitories where you don’t feel that you are sleeping on the top of the next bun bed, even though it has no curtains. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you want to in the artsy district, as the Gallery Hostel is located in Rua Miguel Bombarda, famous for its art gallery and for Centro Comercial Bombarda. This is a trendy shopping mall with concept stores, two amazing restaurants and an organic market on Saturdays. How to get there: the subway stations Lapa and São Bento are 20min walking distance from the Gallery Hostel in Porto.

Garden House Hostel

dorms garden house hostel porto

For me one of the most important criteria when searching for the best hostels in Porto is the existence of outdoors common areas. The Garden House Hostel might be the hostel in Porto if you share my criteria, as it has a lovely garden with a tiny lake on the backyard. I simply love it! Both the dormitories and the double bedrooms are humbly decorated, so I would recommend this hostel in Porto if you are visiting our city during Summer. This is an amazing area to stay in Porto as the hostel is located in Rua de Santa Catarina, the famous pedestrian street full of stores and street artists. This is also where the Café Majestic is located. How to get there: the subway station Bolhão is 5min walking distance.

Porto Spot Hostel

dorms porto spot hostel

Another hostel in Porto that checks the mark of having an amazing outdoors common area is Porto Spot Hostel . Another characteristic that makes this one of the best hostels in Porto is the amount of natural light that shines across the entire building, including the dormitories and the common areas. It is magical! This is an amazing area to stay in Porto if you want to avoid the crowds, as this hostel in Porto is located in Bonfim , a residential area full of trendy hipster places and traditional Portuguese stores. I should know, I live in this neighborhood 🙂 How to get there: the subway station Bolhão and Faria Guimarães are a 10 minutes walking distance.

Best Guest Porto Hostel

dorms best guest porto hostel

Best Guest Porto Hostel has some of the best common areas of this list – including a marvelous living room where it is really easy to meet people, and a really large shared kitchen. For me this is an important criteria when choosing a hostel because I love to cook (it allows you to save some money too) and quite often the hostels’ kitchen are a war zone. The dormitories are full of light and painted in bright colours, which makes them particularly cheerful. I love it! This is an amazing area to stay in Porto if you want to be “where everything happens” because this is in the most touristy area. It is packed with people, the traffic is chaotic but you have amazing souvenir stores within walking distance, and you are also close to the Douro river. How to get there: the subway São Bento is a 5 minutes walking distance.

Nice Way Porto Hostel

nice way hostel porto private bedroom

There are two reasons why the Nice Way Porto Hostel  is one of the best hostels in Porto: the amazing staff and its superb location at downtown Porto. When you walk in you immediately feel at ease as the staff is really friendly and the living room is decorated in a fun way. Nice Way Porto Hostel  organises several activities so that travellers get to know each other, such as drinking games and movie nights. This hostel in Porto also has an “Harry Potter” dormitory – I am serious! It is an oval shapped dormitory under the dome of the building, with wood beams and tiles. You can definitely picture Hedwig, the loyal owl of Harry Potter, flying around. So if you are an Harry Potter fan I strongly suggest you to book a bed at this amazing dormitory, specially during hot Summer days! 🙂 This is a nice are to stay in Porto as there are many budget restaurants. At Rua Sá da Bandeira you will also find a pharmacy, some traditional grocery shops and small supermarkets. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the famous  Bolhão’s market , just 5 minutes walking distance. How to get there: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade subway stations are a 5 minutes walking distance.

Porto Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse

porto lounge hostel double bedroom

Porto Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse is absolutely gorgeous. It is located at one of my favourite streets of Porto, Rua do Almada, very close by to some of the best bars in Porto . The common areas are lovely, decorated in orange and white tones. I particularly like the esplanade on the backyard, the perfect hidden spot to relax a bit after a day walking in Porto. Moreover, it has a beautiful skylight, one of the most important architectural treasures of Porto . Also, one of the reasons to pick Porto Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse as one of the best hostels in Porto are the countless activities it organises every night such as quiz nights, Portuguese lessons at 7.30pm, shots nights, etc. The dormitories are very cosy, but I must warn you that the beds don’t have curtains, which might be a problem if you want more privacy or simply mind the light. On the other hand, Porto Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse has the cutest double bedrooms I have seen, filled with light and with very comfortable armchairs 🙂 It also has triple bedrooms, ideal for families with a child. How to get there: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade subway stations are just a 5 minutes walking distance.

Cats Porto Hostel

cats hostel porto concert rooftop

Cats Porto Hostel has an innovative decor aligned with the Indian concept of tattva, which refers to the natural elements: sky, water, fire, earth and air. This hostel has a wonderful location on a quiet street close to the famous São Bento train station . In terms of facilities, the super star at Cats Porto Hostel is definitely its amazing rooftop 🙂 The rooftop also has a barbecue, making this spot ideal for hostel parties or sunset get togethers. This hostel in Porto also has its own restaurant, which is very convenient. This is a great area to stay in Porto if you want to avoid the super touristy one. However, and to be 100% honest, I don’t feel very comfortable walking on these streets alone during the night – but I never heard of anything bad happening there. How to get there: São Bento station is a 10 minutes walking distance.

Yes! Porto Hostel

yes porto hostel dormitories

Yes! Porto Hostel , with an ideal location for party people , is definitely one of the best hostels in Porto for young travellers. It has a cosy living room where every night the staff of Yes! Porto Hostel has dinner with guests, creating a fun relationship with and between travellers. The kitchen is surprisingly big for a building at downtown Porto, with large tables for get togethers. Something that I really like about Yes! Porto Hostel is that the first floor is just for ladies. There is a female dormitory and the bathrooms is just for women, which is something I find very useful for female solo travellers. This is the best area to stay in Porto if you are looking for some nightlife fun. However, it gets really noisy during the night. How to get there: São Bento and Aliados subway stations are a 10 minutes walking distance.
