The 7 Best Facial Cleansing Brushes of 2024, Tested & Reviewed

Find the cleansing gadget for you, right this way.

travel face cleansing brush

Byrdie / Tamara Staples

Our favorite cleansing brush is the RoseSkinCo. Petal 2 . It’s intuitive to use, has a compact and functional design, and effectively cleanses the skin. But if you’re looking for a very delicate, manual cleansing brush, we recommend the Tata Harper Cleansing Kabuki Brush . And if physical exfoliation is your goal, try the Ezbasics Facial Cleansing Brush .

Facial cleansing brushes aren't necessarily must-have beauty products, but lots of people swear by these gadgets for deeply cleansed skin. While we recommend washing your face with a good face wash no matter what, the added benefits of a cleansing brush (like physical exfoliation or even massage), make it a welcome addition to any skincare routine. "Facial cleansing brushes act as mechanical exfoliators to help remove dead skin while also increasing blood flow to leave skin glowing," explains board-certified dermatologist Sheila Farhang, MD .

But as with most skincare tools, not all facial cleansing brushes are the same. So, we put some of the most popular and highly rated options to the test in our lab facility in NYC, and assessed them based on ease of use, effectiveness, comfort, and ease of cleaning. Those that performed the best earned a spot on our list. Keep reading to find the best facial cleansing brushes tested by Byrdie.

Best Overall

Roseskinco. petal 2 cleansing brush.

RoseSkinCo.

  • Ease of Use 4.6 /5
  • Effectiveness 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 5 /5

Intuitive and easy to use

Cleanses thoroughly without causing irritation

Comes with a compact stand to store it

Lightweight handle makes using it easy

The speed change and on/off buttons are embedded in the handle and a bit challenging to push

Brush Material: Silicone | Skin Type: All | Features: Four brush modes, USB rechargeable, automatic shut-off

This is our favorite cleansing brush thanks to its ease of use, compact and functional design, variety of features, and effective yet gentle cleansing capability. Our tester, Alison, was really impressed by how user-friendly it is, sharing that it’s easy to understand how to use the functions. It gave her skin a thorough cleanse without feeling abrasive , and she loved how it shuts off after two minutes to ensure you don’t overdo it. She was also pleasantly surprised by the massage feature, saying that it felt like a mini skin treatment.

The design is compact and ergonomic, and it’s made with soft, antibacterial, clinical-grade silicone that feels gentle on the skin. One minor flaw is that the speed and on/off buttons are camouflaged into the handle and are a bit tricky to press, but other than this, it’s a nearly perfect facial cleansing brush.

Alison, tester with sensitive skin

“The surprise winning feature is the massage setting which is total bliss and a bonus. The silicone bristles are soft and non-irritating on my sensitive skin, and do a good job of cleaning. I enjoyed using this brush and would happily use it every day.”

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Någracoola sonic facial cleansing brush.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Effectiveness 5 /5

Helps to break down stubborn makeup

Handle is easy to grip

Silicone bristles are gentle

Understanding how to to use the brush may require you to carefully read the instructions

Brush Material: Silicone | Skin Type: All | Features: Heats up, has magnetic charging port

Another silicone facial cleansing brush, this one also received very high scores during our test. It features a heating capability, a magnetic charging port, and gentle vibrations. While our tester shared that she needed to carefully read the instructions to understand how to use it properly, meaning that it was not the most intuitive, she noted that the instructions were clear. She was very impressed by how well it cleansed her face of multiple layers of foundation without being too abrasive or causing irritation on her sensitive skin. She noted that while she often finds silicone bristles to be too harsh on her skin, the bristles on this brush are totally gentle. It does take a few minutes to heat up if you choose to use that setting, but our tester shared that it did add to the experience of using this brush. Once she cleansed her face, it was left feeling great, and the brush was easy to clean afterward.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Tata harper cleansing kabuki brush.

Tata Harper

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Effectiveness 4 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 2.5 /5

Incredibly soft bristles

Pairs well with foam cleansers

Compact and easy to travel with

Requires a bit of effort to fully clean the brush

Brush Material: Fine synthetic bristles | Skin Type: All | Features: Compact wooden handle

Unlike a lot of facial cleansing brushes that are made of silicone and feature various mechanical modes, this one has soft synthetic bristles—similar to a makeup brush —and is meant to be used manually. The ultra-soft bristles bump up the lather of foam cleansers and work to give the skin a deep yet gentle clean. The bristles also provide very subtle exfoliation, perfect for those with sensitive skin that struggle to exfoliate without creating irritation. Our tester, Lee, said that the wooden handle is easy to grip, and she loved how compact the brush is, making it a great option to travel with. She said it helped to make her cleanser really sudsy, and it worked beautifully to remove makeup and give her skin a deep clean without feeling harsh or stripping. The one downside? Because the brush features bristles that are light in color, if you use it to help remove makeup, it might stain a bit. And as opposed to silicone which can be cleaned in a few seconds, this brush takes a bit longer to fully clean.

Lee, tester with sensitive skin

“The bristles really conformed to every area of my face with ease, and I could even use it on my sensitive skin without irritation. I have some minor skin irritations at the moment, and this brush didn't aggravate it.”

Best for All Skin Types

Buttah skin buttah vibe brush.

  • Ease of Cleaning 3 /5

Pulsation provides invigorating sensation

Works to exfoliate dead skin cells

Pulsation provides facial massage

Brush is a bit tricky to clean

Brush Material: Silicon | Skin Type: All | Features: Two modes of sonic pulsation

Buttah was created with melanin-rich skin in mind, and this facial cleansing brush is excellent for all skin types. It works to cleanse the skin of excess oil, rid it of dead skin cells, and improve radiance. It features two modes of pulsation, which provide a gentle facial massage, and the silicon bristles are delicate enough not to irritate the skin, but effective enough to effectively exfoliate it.

In addition to appreciating that the brush fit into the palm of her hands, our tester loved the texture of the bristles and the pulsation feature. She noted that the pulsation provided a massage and an invigorating sensation, leaving her feeling energized. After using it, she shared that she could no longer see any traces of dead skin, and her skin was left looking clean and glowy. One thing she noted was that she had to scrub the brush a bit to get all traces of makeup off of it, but all things considered, we still highly recommend this tool.

Best for Exfoliation

Ezbasics facial cleansing brush.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 4 /5

Lightweight, compact design

Effectively removes dead skin cells

Variety of settings for customizable cleansing experience

Doesn't remove every last trace of makeup

Brush Material: Silicone | Skin Type: Oily, Dry, Combo | Features: Five speed settings

If you’re in the market for a facial cleansing brush that will effectively exfoliate your skin, we recommend this one. In addition to its lightweight and compact design, and the variety of speed settings it has, our tester, Michelle, loved how well it worked to cleanse and exfoliate her skin. She noted that while the bristles didn’t feel harsh or abrasive, they are a bit more stiff compared to many options on the market, making it a good choice if you enjoy physical exfoliation. While it didn’t fully remove 100% of her makeup (that's what a makeup remover is for, anyway), this isn’t a dealbreaker for us as it does an excellent job at cleansing bare skin and exfoliating to reveal a glowing complexion.

Michelle, tester with normal skin

“The brush did a wonderful job of exfoliating and cleansing my skin. It felt like it was able to get a good amount of makeup off while also removing dead skin.”

Best for Customization

Foreo luna 3.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 3.5 /5

Compact design is portable and allows for control

Removes makeup with minimal effort

Soft bristles aren’t too harsh on sensitive skin

App that comes with the tool is a bit challenging to customize

Cleaning makeup residue from brush takes a bit of effort

Brush Material: Silicone | Skin Type: All | Features: Synchronizes with Bluetooth app, has 16 pulsation intensities

We recommend breaking down your makeup with an oil-based cleanser prior to going in with your face wash ( double cleansing ), but it doesn’t hurt to have a tool that does an excellent job at removing makeup. Our tester was pleasantly surprised by how well this one removed her foundation , lipstick , and even eyeshadow , saying that while there was the tiniest bit of makeup residue left on her skin after using the brush, a few splashes of water got rid of it.

In addition to how well it works to remove makeup, she noted how much she liked the soft bristles, saying that they weren’t too abrasive on her sensitive skin. Something really unique about this particular facial cleansing brush is that it connects to an app specifically designed to use in combination with the tool. She expressed that it was really cool to have visual guidance while cleansing, and the app shares the ideal amount of time you should spend cleansing each part of your face, but our tester said it definitely took some work to figure out how to change the settings and customize the app to her liking.

Best for Beginners

Vivalui wireless ultrasonic silicone electric facial cleansing brush.

  • Effectiveness 3 /5

Intuitive to set up and use

Handle is lightweight and easy to grip

Great for a deep cleanse

Bristles could be slightly too abrasive for sensitive skin

Heating function isn’t great

Brush Material: Silicone | Skin Type: Oily, Dry, Combo | Features: Heating function

Skincare tools can be really fun additives to your skincare routine, but if they’re too complicated to use, chances are we’ll give up on them after only a few uses. That's why we love this one—it’s simple and intuitive. Our tester said she had no issues setting it up, holding it, or using it, and she found that it did a great job of giving her skin a deep cleanse. She expressed that it’s likely ideal for a weekly deep cleanse as opposed to a daily cleanse because the bristles aren’t ultra-soft—this is definitely something to keep in mind if you have sensitive skin. Regardless, she shared that the bristles were effective and not overly abrasive.

While the brush does feature a heating function, our tester noted that she didn’t feel much of a difference between the heated setting and the regular setting, saying that the heat emission was very minor.

Testing Facial Cleansing Brushes for All Skin Types

What to Look for in a Facial Cleansing Brush

  • Bristle type : Facial cleansing brushes are made out of various types of materials, some of the most popular being silicone or synthetic bristles. Choosing the appropriate material comes down to your goals. If you’re simply looking for a gentle tool that will aid in cleansing and increase the lather of your cleanser, a brush with ultra-fine, synthetic bristles, or even fine silicone bristles is best for you. If you’re hoping to achieve exfoliation benefits with your cleansing brush, we recommend something with thicker synthetic or silicone bristles. It’s also worth noting that if you’re concerned about bacteria, opting for a silicone brush is wise because many silicones used in making facial cleansing brushes are antibacterial.
  • Features: Some facial cleansing brushes are simple, manual tools that give you full control—and they’re great for basic cleansing and exfoliation. But if you’re looking for something more high-tech, keep an eye out for special features, like heating functions, vibrations, and massage capabilities.
  • Speed settings: Ideally, you want at least two (though many brushes offer many more) so that you can best customize the intensity of the brush for your skin type and needs.

They have their benefits—namely, more effective cleansing and exfoliation. However, being overzealous with your cleansing brush or using it too often might cause redness and irritation. To avoid irritation, Dr. Farhang recommends using a cleansing brush no more than a few times a week, preferably in the shower when your skin is wet and soft.

Dr. Farhang suggests making it a part of your shower routine so that skin is already soft and wet when using one (this helps minimize irritation). Pair it with a gentle cleanser, and use it only a few times per week, rather than daily, especially if your skin is on the sensitive side. If you’re working with an eclectic brush that has several features, refer to the directions on the packaging of your device.

"Facial cleansing brushes are ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, as well as those with noticeable dead skin buildup," says Akram. And although some brushes are better for sensitive and dry skin types, she says using a cleansing brush on these skin types "could be a little abrasive and may cause redness."

Approach with caution if your skin is easily irritated. "When using a facial cleansing brush, you could potentially cause irritation if you have sensitive skin. It could also worsen existing skin conditions," says Akram, who adds, "I recommend consulting with a skincare professional or a dermatologist for those with specific concerns."

Even those with "normal" skin shouldn't use them every day. "I would recommend limiting usage to a few times a week since facial cleansing brushes to avoid dryness and irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin," says the expert. "Although the bristles are made to be gentle it can still be abrasive on the skin if used daily."

InStyle / Tamara Staples

Splashing your face with water and cleanser is so old school. These days, facial cleansing brushes are stepping in to help remove makeup, dead skin, and pollution, thanks to motorized brush heads that get a deeper clean than your hands alone can. Many brushes even come with bonus high-tech features, like multiple speed and intensity settings, app compatibility, heating and cooling mechanisms, and more—which, while exciting, can make choosing the best facial cleansing brush a bit confusing.

We took to our testing lab with 19 of the best facial cleansing brushes on the market. After testing each brush and analyzing its effectiveness, these face cleansing brushes gave us the brightest, glowiest complexions.

Best Facial Cleansing Brush Overall

Någracoola sonic facial cleansing brush.

This brush gently deep cleans your skin and also helps massage in moisturizers and serums.

The heating and cooling settings aren’t very straightforward.

For a soothing, deep-cleaning experience, look no further than the Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush. The silicone bristles deep clean your skin, exfoliating away any dirt, and unclogging pores to reveal a clean and refreshed complexion. But the deep clean doesn’t stop there: The high-tech tool also spotlights a unique heating and cooling feature. “The brush works effectively, removing makeup and exfoliating my face without irritating my sensitive skin,” our tester shares.

With five different modes to choose from (ranging from soft gentle vibrations to more intense settings) you can truly customize the intensity to your skincare needs. Plus, you can also adjust the temperature with the heating and cooling modes. The former helps open up your pores for a deep clean, while the latter tightens and firm your skin. Our tester found that adjusting the temperature settings wasn’t very straightforward, but once she got the hang of it she liked the options. Once you find the perfect speed and temperature, the smart device automatically saves it so everything will already be set the next time you use it. It doesn’t stop there: The unique tool also takes you through your whole skincare routine.

Once ready to apply moisturizer or serum, flip the brush around and the massage setting will help your skincare products soak in. It also aids in wrinkle prevention and stimulates collagen production. The cherry on top: It comes in five different colors, so you can pick one to match your self-care aesthetic. Our tester loves this cleansing brush so much she added it to her Amazon cart right after this test. “It’s very hard for me to find a brush that's effective and doesn't irritate my skin, but the price on this is very affordable and the material seems to last long.”

16 different pulsations allow you to customize the intensity to your skin’s needs.

While it can be used on its own, the cleansing brush works best with the app.

Foreo Luna 3 is a true investment: Its compact size, smart tech features, and effortless ability to provide you with a deep cleanse makes it worth every penny. Not to mention, the cleansing brush has 16 different pulsating intensities (that you can customize to your skin’s needs) to whisk away any makeup or debris. Made of short nonporous silicone bristles (which help prevent the spread of bacteria), this tool easily removes every trace of the day.

“I was surprised at how well the Foreo removed my foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick — I did have to rinse my face a few times to finish getting the makeup off, but it took just a few splashes of water and a light towel wipe to feel totally clean and makeup-free,” shares our tester. As a bonus, this high tech beauty favorite connects to an app that has a visual guide to show how to properly clean each area of the face. While our tester loves the useful app, she also wishes it was “more intuitive to use, so that you could access the different mode options [on the tool] without the need for your cell phone.” Regardless, she loves the luxuriousness of the brush and thinks it would be a “great gift for the beauty lover who seems to have everything.”

Olay Regenerist

You get a lot of bang for your buck, thanks to two brush heads and two speeds.

You’ll have to replace the brush heads every few months, depending on frequency of use.

For under $30, we’re highly impressed with this drugstore facial cleansing brush. This brush comes with two heads (they’re both the same, FYI—one is meant to be a replacement) and features two speeds. The bristles are sturdy but not abrasive, so we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a deep exfoliation, especially since the speeds aren’t very fast. You will eventually need to shell out for replacement heads , sold in packs of two. But for an affordable price (and considering it’s frequently on sale), we think this device is definitely worth a try.

Material: Soft bristles | Settings: 2 | Special Features: Dermatologist-designed

Best Budget

Ezbasics facial cleansing brush.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 4 /5

The compact size is great for travel and gives you more control.

The bristles are a bit rougher than some of the other brushes on this list.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to get a quality facial cleansing brush. Case in point: This one from EZBasics Brush is under $40 and stands out for its deep cleaning abilities, hygienic material, and cute, compact size. Made of silicone bristles, this battery-powered tool removes stubborn makeup and dirt with the choice of five different speeds, so you can adjust it to fit your skin type.

“It felt like it was able to get a good amount of makeup off while also removing dead skin,” our tester shares. “I think it's a great alternative to facial scrubs or harsher tools that might be irritating.” It’s important to note that while she doesn’t think the bristles are necessarily abrasive, she says they are “a little rougher than the average cleansing brush.” Overall, with such a great price tag and its ability to fit it in the palm of your hand, the device is great for travel and gives you more control when cleansing.

Material: Silicone | Speed Settings: 5 | Special Features: Wireless charging

Best Silicone

Vivalui wireless ultrasonic silicone electric facial cleansing brush.

  • Effectiveness 3 /5

The vibrating silicone bristles efficiently unclog pores in seconds.

Our tester says there’s not much variation between the different modes.

Silicone cleansing brushes are often more gentle and hygienic than those with nylon bristles, making them great for all skin types — and this one from Vivalui is one of the best. Made of a luxurious silicone material that gently cleanses the skin, this tool dissolves makeup and clears clogged pores. Compact and lightweight, this brush features two modes (lower and stronger vibration options), and even includes a heating setting to open up your pores. While our tester notes she felt little difference between the two settings, she says that her skin “felt noticeably more cleansed than when I use my hands.” The brush effortlessly unclogs pores by shaking sebum loose, leaving you feeling refreshed and oil-free. As a bonus, the brush is even easy to clean: “I noticed all the suds and residue sliding off the brush when placed in water,” our tester says.

Material: Silicone | Settings: 2 | Special Features: Heating

Easiest to Use

Buttah skin buttah vibe brush.

  • Ease of Cleaning 3 /5

It’s gentle enough for daily use.

The brush is harder to clean than others on this list.

New to cleansing brushes? The Buttah Vibe Brush is a great place to start. This no-fuss brush is straightforward with two settings to seamlessly remove any makeup. According to our tester, the sonic pulsations leave skin looking and feeling better than before. “It made my skin feel very soft, silky, and smooth and left me glowing,” she shares.

While many brushes are too harsh to use daily, this one is gentle enough for everyday use yet still manages to invigorate the skin. “I feel so energized after washing my face with the brush — it feels like a good face massage,” our tester adds. She also shares that the brush did require a few rinses before it was fully clean, but the simplicity of the product and chic design make it totally worth it.

Material: Silicone | Settings: 2 | Special Features: 10,000 pulsations per minute

Best Ergonomic

Roseskinco. petal 2 cleansing brush.

RoseSkinCo.

  • Ease of Use 4.6 /5
  • Effectiveness 4.5 /5

The skincare tool pulsates over 10,000 times per minute.

The tool doesn’t have a case, but it comes with a stand instead.

While the Petal 2 from RoseSkinCo. looks like any other facial cleansing brush, it’s unique handle and curved head truly set it apart. The handle is designed to fit perfectly into the palm of your hand, giving you more control, and the shape of the head allows the bristles to effortlessly cup your face, allowing it to more easily cleanse, massage, and rejuvenate your complexion. “The small, light, aerodynamic shape of the handle makes this brush very easy and comfortable to use,” our tester shares. Featuring circulating beads that pulsate over 10,000 times per minute, this brush will transform your skin.

Our tester raves about its offerings, saying “the surprise winning feature is the massage setting, which is total bliss and a bonus.” Another surprising yet welcome feature: The hygienic stand. “I like that it has a little stand so you can let it air dry by the sink, rather than placing a damp brush back in a plastic case,” she shares. Although we wish it also came with a case for travel, you can simply just throw it in your makeup bag for safekeeping on-the-go.

Material: Silicone | Settings: 4 | Special Features: 10,000 pulses per minute

Best Manual

Alder new york cleansing facial brush.

Alder New York

  • Effectiveness 3.5 /5

This brush is made of nylon bristles rather than animal hair, making it a great vegan alternative.

Because the bristles are long, it’s harder to clean the surface of the brush.

If electronic face brushes are too high-tech for you, go back to the basics with the Alder New York Cleansing Facial Brush. This artfully crafted brush features a sleek design and high-quality bristles, and offers an amazing cleanse that gently removes makeup or any other residue. The ergonomic palm handle gives you the utmost control; plus, the brush is made of nylon material, a vegan alternative to animal hair bristles (an eco-conscious effort made by the brand). “The vegan vinyl is a very unique feeling on my skin, almost like a soft brush for a horse's mane (ironic, I know),” our tester shares. “The bristles are firm but form to my face as I move the brush, and don’t cause any irritation,” she adds. She does highlight that due to the long and firm bristles, the brush is a bit difficult to clean. “I feel it would never be fully clean again until I was able to use some liquid solution to get deep into the bristles.”

Material: Nylon | Settings: 1 | Special Features: N/A

Most Versatile

Braun face epilator facespa pro 911.

This facial cleansing brush features three unique attachments for all your skincare needs.

The brush attachment has a smaller surface area than other brushes we tried.

For a facial cleansing brush that does more than just scrub, we recommend the Braun FaceSpa Pro. This handheld device comes with three attachments: a facial cleansing brush that oscillates, a toning head for facial massage, and an epilator head for removing facial hair. The cleansing brush bristles are stiff yet soft and don’t seem to irritate sensitive skin. Although this brush head doesn’t rotate, the oscillations get the job done, and we love the built-in timer that goes off every 20 seconds, reminding you to switch areas. The brush is a tad smaller than the others we tested, but we wouldn’t call that a dealbreaker. The toning device is a major bonus if you’re a skincare devotee since it encourages better product absorption (just dab the product on top of the toning head and turn it on to apply it to your face).

Material: Soft bristles | Settings: 4 | Special Features: Attachments for epilating and toning

We started by researching the best facial cleansing brushes on the market. After conducting some online investigation, we came up with a list of 19 top-rated cleansing brushes. Then, our testers washed their faces using each tool and all of its respective features. Next, our testers cleaned the brush, examining how easy it was to remove any lingering product. They then rated the brushes on a scale of 1 to 5 in four important categories: Ease of use, effectiveness, comfort, and ease of cleaning. Once all the testers provided their ratings and feedback, we narrowed down the list to the seven best facial cleansing brushes.

When it comes to facial cleansing brush material they are mostly made of silicone or synthetic bristles. Beauty editor and esthetician, Grace Day , advises going for a silicone brush, like the   Foreo Luna 3 (her personal favorite) or the Vivalui Wireless Ultrasonic Silicone Electric Facial Cleansing Brush , as this material is less aggressive on sensitive skin and easier to clean. But, if you prefer a bristle brush, we recommend Alder New York Cleansing Facial Brush because its vegan bristles gently cleanse your skin without irritation.

When purchasing a facial cleansing brush it’s important to understand your size needs. To have more control over your device you want to opt for something smaller, Day advises. “Size-wise, I would make sure it’s not too big — you want to be able to get into all the nooks and crannies of your face to target congested areas [like along your nose] and give your skin a really deep clean,” she shares. The NagraCoola Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush allows you to get in all the nooks while still cleansing larger areas like your cheeks and forehead. Additionally, if you are traveling, you want to find a brush that doesn’t take up too much space, and comes in a safe carrying case. ( EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush is one of our favorites for travel.)

While every skin type can use a cleansing brush, Day highly recommends them for those with oily and congested skin. “Those are the skin types that will benefit most from a deep, exfoliating cleanse,” she says. “As an esthetician I will always advocate for (and prefer) cleansing with fingertips, but facial cleansing brushes do have their benefits if your skin needs a really deep clean, for example if you have a lot of blackheads and enlarged pores.”

How do I use a facial cleansing brush?

Start by applying your cleanser directly onto your face. Then wet your device and use circular motions to wash your face. “When using a facial cleansing brush, avoid pressing too hard - instead, skim the brush lightly over your skin,” Day shares. “Focus it on areas where your congestion or pores are more noticeable, such as around your nose and along your jawline, and avoid using it near your eyes. I also really like to use mine on my lips when they’re particularly dry and chapped.”

Also, Day notes that these tools work best with water-based gel cleansers rather than foaming or cream face washes. “I find the texture helps them to move easily and the vibrations will also lather up the cleanser,” she shares.

Can I use a facial cleansing brush every day?

Like lots of beauty products and facial tools , truth be told, it depends on your skin type and your skin’s sensitivity levels. Those with oily or congested skin may benefit from more frequent use, whereas those with dry or sensitive skin should only cleanse with a brush one to two times a week.

Day urges you to evaluate your skin’s sensitivity before incorporating a cleansing brush into your daily or weekly routine. “You might find your skin’s sensitivity varies by time of day, by season, or after using certain products. I would always take a read on your skin’s sensitivity before using any exfoliating product, including a facial cleansing brush,” she advises. “Personally, even though my skin isn’t particularly sensitive, I only use my Foreo one to two times a week, and I don’t use any other physical exfoliants or scrubs.”

What is the best type of facial cleansing brush?

There’s no one size fits all when it comes to the best cleansing brushes — the best type will differ based on your skin’s needs. If you have super sensitive skin, opt for a gentle tool like the Vivalui Wireless Ultrasonic Silicone Electric Facial Cleansing Brush . On the other hand, if your skin seems super congested, you may want something with stronger bristles to deeply cleanse your skin, like the Alder New York Cleansing Facial Brush .

While Dr. Camp says it's good to exfoliate with a facial cleansing brush two to three times a week, reduce that to about once a week if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. The extra force from the brush, whether you're using an electric or manual one, can cause redness , swelling, and irritation. No matter your skin type, budget, or bathroom *aesthetic*, see the nine best dermatologist-recommended facial cleansing brushes, below.

Amazon's bestselling facial cleansing brush comes with seven different heads, all of which provide different levels of exfoliation and massage. It's also available in six cute colors, so be sure to get your phone tripod ready.

Rave Review: "I love all the brushes it comes with, so you can change them out. Overall, 10/10 recommend!"

While Luna's famous brush may make a small dent in your bank account, it's well worth the splurge. It uses low-frequency vibrations to gently exfoliate skin, leaving even the most sensitive or acne-prone skin baby soft. The high-tech brush even comes with an app through which you can schedule reminders and choose different vibration patterns.

Rave Review: "I’m seeing great results with my sensitive skin. My skin feels very clean after every use, and I never look red or irritated from it."

This device comes with an exfoliating brush, cleansing brush, and special attachment for dry or sensitive skin. That makes it a great option for anyone who's skin changes with the seasons. The storage base makes for easy access on your bathroom counter, too.

Rave Review: "I have very sensitive, acne-prone skin. This has plenty of power and does a GREAT job. So so so happy I bought this!!"

Made with gentle silicone and a soothing massage function, this waterproof cleansing brush is seriously going to upgrade shower time. It can be charged with any USB port, making it great for travel.

Rave Review: "This is the BEST cleansing device I've ever used! I'm 58, and I never knew my skin could be even better! This cleanses the skin at another level! It even makes my makeup look amazing because my skin is so smooth!"

This four-pack is super reasonably priced at $7, but that doesn't make these brushes low in quality. They're made with soft and flexible food-grade silicone and feature a handy (pun intended) grip that can easily be used all over the body.

Rave Review: "I have super sensitive skin but wanted to get a good, clean face at the end of the day. These are super soft. I feel more clean than when I just use a cleanser with my hands."

With four different pulsation levels and sloped edges, Finishing Touch's brush is a great tool for targeted cleansing and massage. The dual massage mode is specifically designed to bring blood flow to the surface of the skin, making it glow.

Rave Review: "I love this brush! The silicone bristles are soft, so they don't scratch or irritate my skin. I love the different settings that it comes with as well."

Yeah One's chic, palm-sized brush features a flexible head that'll easily bend to the contours of your face. It also comes with a convenient, Insta-worthy magnetic charging holder for your vanity.

Rave Review: "It looks good on the counter, is easy to use, has different modes, and feels great on my face...the silicone is also very gentle on your skin. It's small enough to carry when traveling."

Ah, the classic Clarisonic brush. Reviewers love that you can easily buy replacement heads for it when it starts to get dirty, making it a hygienic option that you'll keep around forever.

Rave Review: "I have tried other brushes but none of them have been as good! I noticed results within one use. I have sensitive, oily skin. After one use, my pores looked smaller and my skin was not as oily by the day's end."

Made with hypoallergenic silicone, PMD's brush was designed to lift, firm, and tone skin. One side cleanses the face with silicone bristles using 11 different pulsation modes, and the other (totally flat) side helps to gently massage your serums and moisturizers more deeply into your skin.

Rave Review: "Makes me want to wash my face multiple times a day! It’s the most relaxing part of my day and the vibrations even help to relieve my TMJ. My skin has never felt cleaner or looked clearer. I HIGHLY recommend giving this a try!!"

"Facial cleansing brushes clean the skin by increasing the amount of lather formed from cleansers and by exfoliating," says Dr. Sara Hogan , MD, board-certified dermatologist. "This results in the lifting and mechanical removal of makeup, oil, dirt, and dead skin cells." Dr. Hogan says that facial cleansing brushes might be a good option to remove heavy makeup, but recommends using these brushes sparingly, especially if you have sensitive skin , eczema or rosacea , since "there is a risk of causing injury to the epidermis with aggressive or prolonged scrubbing." Start by using once a week and increase usage as tolerated.

To find the best facial cleansing brushes out there, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests the devices to find which are easy to use, have gentle brush heads that provide gentle exfoliation , and help skin feel smoother after use. In some cases, testers reported clearer, more radiant skin after just a week. We also checked products for safety, ease of use, and performance.

In our last facial cleansing brush test, we parsed though 165 questionnaires, 630 captures from Visia imaging (which analyzes changes in complexion), and 1,260 data points to find the only ones worth buying. We used our categorical expertise and previous testing findings, as well as products with rave user reviews from brands we trust to round up the best facial cleansing brushes for a deep, spa-like cleanse. Here, our favorite facial cleansing devices of 2021:

Olay Regenerist Facial Cleansing Brush

Regenerist Facial Cleansing Brush

Olay's cleansing brush has two speeds, so you can choose a deep cleanse or opt for a gentle exfoliation at a faster speed . "I was skeptical about adding this brush into my routine as areas of my face are more sensitive than others, but I am beyond ecstatic I bought it," says one reviewer. "My skin looks revived! There’s a natural glow and my skin is so soft." In Lab tests on a similar model in 2015, testers loved how light and easy to use the brush was. “It was gentle on my skin but effective at the same time," one tester said.

EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush

Facial Cleansing Brush

This silicone facial cleansing device lacks a traditional brush, making it inherently more hygienic at a nice price. "I was very pleasantly surprised by this little scrubber," says one reviewer. " This is a great alternative for around $20 and it left my face feeling very smooth after just the first use."

PIXNOR Facial Cleansing Brush

Facial Cleansing Brush

Talk about customizable — this device has seven interchangeable brush heads . It's racked up over 21,000 reviews on Amazon with an average 4.4 star rating. "I use it in the shower and the waterproof feature is one of my favorite parts," says one reviewer. "It's amazing how much gunk it gets off my face even after I already took my make up off. I love that you can buy and replace the heads."

FOREO LUNA 2 for Normal Skin

LUNA 2 for Normal Skin

As pretty as it is useful, this silicone scrubber pulsates as you glide it across your skin. Instead of a spinning brush head like many facial cleansing devices, this silicone device vibrates (and is much easier to clean!).

Dr. Hogan personally uses this brush: "The device has two sides — a brush side made of silicone bristles that are non-abrasive and hygienic, and a massage side that helps break up oil and dirt while also increasing circulation," she says. Bonus: The brand claims that one charge lasts for 450 uses, so if you use the device twice a day, you only have to charge it once every seven months .

INNERNEED Super Soft Silicone Face Cleanser and Massager Brush

Super Soft Silicone Face Cleanser and Massager Brush

If you'd prefer a manual silicone brush to keep in your shower, this option is perfect for you. It's easy to use, gentle on reactice skin, and the  little brush is easy to hold and use, and gently exfoliates . "This is a gentle enough way to exfoliate that it gets the job done for me without irritation," says one reviewer.

Vanity Planet Ultimate Skin Spa

Ultimate Skin Spa

This is another one of Dr. Hogan's favorite options. "The Ultimate Skin Spa Facial cleansing brush from Vanity Planet contains three interchangeable brush heads that are customizable for different skin types, from acne-prone to sensitive ," says Dr. Hogan. "The speed settings allow the user to cleanse with control and to avoid overdoing it. Plus, it comes in a cute and portable case."

Naturopathica Facial Cleansing Brush

Facial Cleansing Brush

While this ultra-soft brush doesn't oscillate or vibrate, it's still a game changer. Fine nylon bristles cut at different lengths help you get into every nook and cranny.   "This a really great and handy brush that helps you cover all surface area of the face, plus those angled and hard to reach places," says one reviewer. "It dries quickly after use and is super soft."

Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush

Cleansing Massage Brush

Another manual option, people love how silky-soft the bristles on Shiseido's brush are . These bristles are designed to give you a face massage while remaining as gentle as possible. "This brush cleanses, exfoliates, and massages my face in one step," says one reviewer. "I look forward to cleansing my face with it. I have suffered fewer breakouts and my face is much smoother."

e.l.f. Cosmetics Cleansing Duo Face Brush

Cleansing Duo Face Brush

This dual-sided manual brush has the best of both worlds — ultra soft bristles on one side, and a silicone massager on the other. "This is not too rough on my face at all and is actually quite soothing," says one reviewer. "The bristles are extremely soft but still can cleanse dirt and oil." The combination of silicone and nylon bristles makes this brush stand out, according to Dr. Hogan. "This allows for both lifting of makeup, oil and dirt and exfoliation at the same time," she says.

PMD Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device

Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device

Not only does this brush help cleanse your face, it also claims to lift and firm your skin, using 7,000 vibrations per minute.  "It not only cleans but massages the skin," says one reviewer. "I use the opposite side of the device to massage my serums into skin. I can really see a major difference. Also a big plus for me is that it uses a single battery rather than having to plug it in to charge it, which is great for travel." It's also odor-resistant, antibacterial, and much easier to clean than traditional brushes.

CLEAR

By far the most expensive on the list, but reviewers swear that this brush is worth the splurge. It has three different application modes that use sonic ion technology to help cleanse without stripping, according to the brand . "This is like having a facialist come to your house and give you a facial," one reviewer raves.

Essentially, a facial cleansing brush uses gentle exfoliation, along with vibration, to clean out hard-to-reach places and remove makeup, reduce acne breakouts, and exfoliate the skin. Be sure to read those directions to properly sanitize the device to prevent future acne from forming. According to celebrity aesthetics nurse injector and founder of Revay Aesthetics , Revay Plunkett, these brushes also increase blood circulation. “The great thing about using a facial cleansing device is that it stimulates circulation while simultaneously exfoliating the surface of the skin . Stimulating the blood and lymph flow in the face can decrease puffiness, eliminate toxins, and promote cellular regeneration. In simpler terms, this makes your skin firmer, more radiant, and smooth,” she adds.

Sensitive skin types (i.e. skin that's prone to eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis) should look for options with softer bristles and consider working brushes into their routine bi-weekly versus daily to start. It can be tempting to go hard when cleansing, but over-sloughing can leave your skin raw. Unsure if it’s the right tool for you? Chat up with your derm to get their expert opinion.

Overall, the best brushes have the same general process: Remove your makeup, apply cleanser to wet skin, and massage the brush along your face in circular motions for a minute or so. The results? Exfoliated, smooth, and clear skin. With the classic Clarisonic no longer on the market, we’ve rounded up a new batch of favorites, including the silicone-only newbies from PMD and Foreo. Ahead are seven brushes ELLE.com editors have tried and loved, plus a few other top-rated models. We picked our favorites based on how much makeup, skincare, and pollution they removed, along with scouring customer review sections to find the highest-rated versions on the market.

Look forward to skin that’s not only clean, but firmed, toned, and more youthful. Unlike other brushes where you have to swap out the head, the device is made entirely with ultra-hygienic silicone, meaning PMD Clean is odor-resistant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and waterproof. The brush is also pretty foolproof to clean. Simply rinse with warm water and gently rub in a cleanser (or soap), then pat dry. Consistent users claim their skin has never looked or felt better.

An Amazon reviewer says : “I absolutely love my PMD! I had seen my friend’s skin changing over time and finally asked what she was doing. She is a makeup artist, so I assumed she’d found new makeup products, but instead, she had consistently been using her PMD. I got results immediately, and now a couple of months later, I can’t live without this device. At 55 years of age, people usually guess me to be about 38 or 40. The glow stays all day, and it’s not the makeup. My skin is smooth and very much alive.”

  • There are four customizable modes in total. Hint: Up the ante on your serum application by using mode 3 or 4 for massaging.
  • Apply cleanser directly onto the bristles, whereas serums and moisturizers should be applied directly to the back.
  • To avoid damaging or bending the silicone bristles, use the included stand.

5. Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush

Easy to use.

The cult-favorite Japanese skincare brand’s luxurious cleansing brush is the perfect hybrid of silky-soft, finely tapered bristles and silicone cushions made to gently massage the skin. With an ergonomic, curved handle, users can grip it without it slipping, and breeze over natural facial contours. It also allows for a gentle facial massage (great for microcirculation) and overall skin vitality and radiance. However, due to the softness of the bristles, this brush isn’t as effective at exfoliating.

Nordstrom rating : 4.4/5 stars

A Nordstrom reviewer says : “It offers the perfect blend of soft bristles and firm massaging benefits in one tool. I recommend everyone own one of these.”

  • Brush material: Nylon with silicone cushions
  • Cap included to protect the brush’s bristles. One reviewer said with proper care, her brush lasted nearly 10 years.
  • The bristles were developed to maximize foam so you don't need to load up the cleanser

6. Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush

User friendly.

The incredible silicone material is what sets this cleansing brush apart. It’s non-abrasive, gentle, and easy to clean. Plus, it lasts for months after a full charge, so you don’t have to worry about it dying if you travel often. Foreo delivers around 8,000 T-Sonic pulsations per minute through the silicone touch points. The T-sonic technology is designed to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin for a strong cleansing. The Luna comes in four colors and looks great on any top #shelfie. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have a timer, so set your own alarm for about one minute.

An Amazon reviewer says : “I have combination skin, with a rosy/oily T-zone and dry cheeks. I have been using this twice a day for not even a week, and my skin feels as soft as after a facial. Blemishes are gone and my skin is literally glowing. My pores even look smaller.”

  • Skin Types: Available in three versions for combination, normal, and sensitive skin
  • The product is small and sits upright, so it makes storage easy.
  • Skip using clay-based, silicone-based, grainy cleansers, exfoliators , or scrubs with this tool. The silicone nubs offer enough sloughing on their own. Instead, go with a gel-based cleanser to get the job done.

7. Olay Regenerist Facial Cleansing Brush

Best budget buy.

A product that delivers bang for your buck, the Olay brush provides a deep clean and exfoliation that’s perfect for all skin types. Amazon readers compare the brush to the classic Clarisonic and see similar results after continual use. The Olay version is quite small and only comes with two settings: daily deep cleansing or gentle exfoliation. While it’s less expensive, it’s a good entry-level device for folks looking to try a cleansing brush. Instead of sonic vibrations, the brush uses a two-speed rotating system to cleanse the skin. However, you’ll have to invest in brush replacements over time.

An Amazon reviewer says : “It functions just fine and has a gentle brush on it—no different from the expensive ones I’ve purchased in the past. Highly recommend this product.”

  • Brush material: Plastic
  • Portable and easy for travel
  • Replacement brushes cost $10.

Meet the Expert

Revay Plunkett is a celebrity aesthetics nurse injector and founder of Revay Aesthetics .

Can you use a cleansing brush every day?

“Too much of anything is never a good thing,” Plunkett says. However, you should always use a cleansing brush in moderation, especially depending on your skin type. “I suggest using a cleansing brush as part of your nighttime routine to remove the day’s makeup, oil, and debris. Depending on your brush, make sure to clean and change the head of your device regularly to make sure it stays clear of bacteria, or else it could cause breakouts,” Plunkett explains.

Do dermatologists/skin experts recommend facial cleansing brushes?

“Definitely. But it’s important to find one that works with your skin type,” Plunkett says. For those with sensitive skin, Plunkett suggests using a gentle brush to avoid irritation or any damage to the skin’s barrier.” Exfoliating regularly is an important part of cell turnover and if it makes your skincare routine more fun and relaxing, why not? At Revay Aesthetics, we love the Supracor Face Mitt because it is naturally antifungal, antibacterial, and allergen-free.”

7 best facial cleansing brushes and how to shop for one, according to experts

Here are the face cleansing brushes in 2020 that Dermatologists and skincare experts recommend. Shop the top picks from Clarisonic, PMD, and more.

These days we have electric toothbrushes to scrub away plaque and massage guns to soothe our tired muscles, so why not also invest in a facial cleansing brush to wash away the day’s dirt and grime? Facial cleansing brushes help wash and exfoliate your face for softer skin and to help minimize the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, according to the experts we spoke to.

Dr. Hadley King , a board-certified dermatologist specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology and a Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, says they’re “particularly helpful for cleaning the skin for those with oily or acne-prone skin, or for those who wear heavy makeup.” She also says they “can be a gentle option for exfoliation for those with sensitive skin.”

Many of these brushes can also cost just a fraction of the price of a professional facial, with some manual brushes available for under $10.

We spoke to dermatologists about the benefits of facial cleansing brushes, what to consider when shopping for one and how to best use it. We also got top picks from the experts and our editors, and compiled some highly rated options that align with our experts’ guidance.

SKIP AHEAD The best facial cleansing brushes in 2024 | How to shop for a facial cleansing brush

Selected. Our top picks

Foreo Luna 3

How we picked the best facial cleansing brushes

Facial cleansing brushes can help remove excess oil and makeup , along with sweat, dead skin cells and other debris, according to Dr. Ava Shamban, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Ava MD . Generally, the brushes mildly exfoliate using movement and friction to lift what’s sitting on the surface of the stratum corneum, which is the outer layer of the skin.

Using advice from experts, we chose the best facial cleansing brushes based on the following criteria:

  • A user-friendly shape and weight that feels good in your hand and is easy to use.
  • Multiple bristles that are easy to keep clean . Silicone bristles are non-porous and “easy to get squeaky clean” compared to nylon brushes, says Shamban. And the more bristles, the better. (For top-rated brushes that didn’t have silicone brush heads, we prioritized options with easily replaceable brush heads so that you’re regularly using a clean brush.)
  • Multiple speeds and settings that can target different areas of the face or can be adjusted for when “you’re taking makeup off or just doing a gentle cleanse,” says Shamban.

The best facial cleansing brushes in 2024.

Experts told us that facial cleansing brushes can be a great way to elevate your nighttime skin care routine by gently exfoliating and removing makeup, dirt and other impurities from your face. To help guide you through the shopping process, we’ve rounded up some expert-recommended picks, along with some NBC Select staff favorites as well as top-rated options at popular retailers like Amazon , Target and Ulta.

Foreo Luna 3

Foreo Luna 3

NBC Select editorial director Lauren Swanson has used Foreo cleansing brushes for years, and the Luna 3 , with its gentle nylon bristles, is her favorite. “There’s one purple face mask that I love, but it won’t wash away unless I use this brush,” she says. “The tiny bristles really get my skin clean without harming it.” The brush is waterproof and can pulse at 12 different intensities, which helps to lift away dirt, oil and excess sebum, the brand says. If you want to cleanse at the gym or while traveling, there’s also the Luna Mini 3 . The Luna 3 is also top-rated, with a 4.4-star average rating from 3,828 reviews at Amazon.

PMD’s Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device

PMD’s Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device

PMD’s battery-powered Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device — which has a 4.4-star average rating from more than 4,239 reviews on Amazon — is a waterproof silicone brush and massager that offers up to 7,000 vibrations per minute for a deep clean, according to the brand. Use the bristled brush in either gentle vibration or intense vibration mode for cleansing, says PMD, and the non-bristled backside of the tool in gentle pulsation or intense pulsation mode for applying lotions or serums. The brush is suitable for all skin types, according to the brand.

Skin Gym’s Ultrasonic Lumiscrub Facial Pro Skin Spatula

Skin Gym's Ultrasonic Lumiscrub Facial Pro Skin Spatula

Skin Gym's Ultrasonic Lumiscrub Facial Pro Skin Spatula

For versatility, King recommends this facial spatula, which uses microcurrents and vibration technology to massage your skin for a deeper cleanse. According to the brand, the spatula should be used with a serum or oil forfor 5-10 minutes at a time, as well as cleanser with warm water and soap. King also recommends different uses for the device’s three modes: “use with a cleanser for enhanced cleansing, use the flat side with a serum or moisturizer for better penetration of the ingredients, or use alone for a facial massage,” she says.

NågraCoola Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush

NågraCoola Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush

NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin bought this rechargeable brush two years ago because it was one of the more affordable options. “It’s gentle, but you can definitely feel it scrubbing,” she says. The battery also “lasts forever,” according to Malin — in fact, she’s only had to charge it twice since buying the brush. NågraCoola says the device is 100% waterproof, has silicone bristles that remove “99.5% of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells,” five intensities to customize to the sensitivity of your skin and a heating mode to help open pores. The NågraCool has a 4.4-star average rating from over 9,860 reviews on Amazon.

Spa Sciences Nova Sonic Cleaning Brush

Spa Sciences NOVA Sonic Cleaning Brush

This three-speed, waterproof cleansing brush from Spa Sciences is rechargeable and uses sonic technology to eliminate dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin cells, the brand says. The replaceable brush head has 20,000 bristles with antimicrobial protection that can get to hard-to-reach places, like around the nose area, according to the brand. The brush has a 4.8-star average rating from more than 2,623 reviews at Walmart.

Olay Regenerist Facial Cleansing Brush

Olay Regenerist Facial Cleansing Brush

Olay Regenerist’s soft-bristle facial cleansing brush offers two speeds — one for daily deep cleansing and the other for gentle exfoliation — and it primes your skin to “maximize the hydrating effect of your moisturizer,” according to the brand. Olay says you can use the water-resistant device in the shower, and it comes with two brush heads (replacements are sold separately in packs of two ). The brush earned a 4.4-star average rating from 24,167 reviews on Amazon.

Etude My Beauty Tool Jellyfish Silicone Brush

Etude My Beauty Tool Jellyfish Silicone Brush

This small brush is a favorite of NBC Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg, who finds this silicone brush gentle on her sensitive skin (Etude also mentions this as a benefit). Ginsberg also loves its cute, cat-like face (though some retailers say it’s a jellyfish ) and the no-frills brush is also easy to wash, compact and costs just $6. It has a 4.4-star average rating from 4,973 reviews on Amazon.

select Dry skin? Here’s what to look for in a cleanser

How to shop for a facial cleansing brush.

When shopping for facial brushes of your own, experts recommend considering factors like the brush’s material, your skin type, and your skin’s sensitivity levels. Below, we’ve compiled their advice to help you find the best facial cleansing brush to suit your skin.

Material and skin type : Depending on your skin type, certain styles of facial cleansing brushes may be better suited for you— “different skin types may respond better to different options” says King. She recommends sonic brushes (which are electric, fast-vibrating brushes with silicone bristles) as good options for gentle exfoliation. “The goal should be to cleanse and exfoliate without causing irritation or inflammation,” she says.

It’s also important to find a face cleansing brush that won’t cause unnecessary damage , especially if you have sensitive skin. Dr. Adam Mamelak, an Austin-based dermatologist, says there can be side effects when using facial brushes, but the key is knowing your skin: “Sensitive skin types and those with rosacea have to be careful with brushes and exfoliating as they can lead to increased irritation.”

Frequently asked questions

King recommends starting slow: “Start out using the device twice weekly, and without too much pressure. If you are tolerating it well then you may be able to build up to daily use but decrease the frequency and/or pressure if your skin is becoming irritated or inflamed.” She also advises using products in conjunction with your cleansing brush — “rinse, pat dry and follow with your favorite serum and moisturizer,” she says. “The newly exfoliated skin will enhance penetration of the ingredients.”

The experts we spoke to all emphasize the importance of keeping your facial cleansing brush clean and dry between uses, in order to avoid issues with bacteria buildup and contamination. King recommends “[changing] the brush heads as recommended” and using silicone brushes for an easier clean — “an advantage of the silicone cleansing brushes is that they are easier to clean and less likely to harbor bacteria, and they do not have brush heads that need to be replaced frequently,” she says.

As with any other treatment, there are potential risks to using a facial cleansing brush, however, many of them can be avoided with proper cleaning and care in choosing your brush. “They can harbor bacteria and yeast if not stored, cleaned and replaced properly” says King. She also warns that “Irritation can result if too much pressure or still bristles are used.”

The Best Facial Cleansing Brushes, According to Skin-Care Experts

Portrait of Lauren Ro

“There is no way your hands could move this effectively” is how one dermatologist summed up the power of a really good facial cleansing brush, which, whether made from nylon bristles or silicone, typically operates on a battery charge and uses sonic frequency to deliver tiny vibrations that deep-clean your skin. Adds certified physician assistant Ami Dalal of Schweiger Dermatology Group , “You get that extra exfoliation and cleansing that you are unable to get with your bare hands or a washcloth .” She cautions, however, that “you do need to be very careful about over-cleansing and over-exfoliating when using a brush device,” and recommends limiting the use of most brushes to one to two times a week for those with sensitive skin. Many of our experts also mentioned that it’s important to clean the brushes regularly (and in the case of bristled brushes, to replace brush heads every three months). And some models, of course, are better than others — which is why we consulted eight skin-care and makeup professionals to find out their favorites, including those that are gentle enough for every day (twice daily) use, those that have guided timers for the different zones of your face, and those that stay charged for a full 650 washes.

Best overall facial cleansing brush

Foreo Luna 3 for Normal Skin

While a cleansing brush made of nylon bristles — like the classic Clarisonic — may be what first comes to mind when you think of these electronic devices, the latest iterations of the genre are now being made of silicone, and the Foreo Luna is at the forefront of this new breed. It was recommended by five of our experts, including Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, founder of Mudgil Dermatology in New York City, who prefers silicone brushes, “as they’re easier to clean,” he says. “It’s all about the silicone, rather than bristles, which is much more hygienic.” (Foreo even claims that its brushes are 35 times more hygienic than nylon bristles.) The others agree, all noting that silicone is resistant to bacteria and non-abrasive, making it ideal for all skin types. And while it may seem surprising that the top pick on our list is also the most expensive, here’s one of the first things you need to know about silicone cleansing brushes: You never have to change out the heads as you do with bristle-based models, which require replacing every couple of months at about $30 a pop. In the long run, you’re actually saving money. And the silicone is gentle enough on your skin that you can use it twice a day, every day.

The Luna device, which comes in multiple models and sizes, works by way of T-sonic pulsations (the “T” stands for “transdermal”) that pulse 8,000 times per minute through silicone touchpoints (Foreo’s equivalent of bristles) to gently but effectively “reach into your pores,” according to the brand, to remove dirt, oil, sweat, makeup residue, and dead skin cells. Dr. Sheel Desai Solomon , a board certified dermatologist in North Carolina, likes the Luna because it’s “very user friendly and non-abrasive to the skin.” Makeup artist Sofiia Strykova at Honey Artists agrees, saying that it’s “very gentle for all skin types,” and notes that, for the best results, you should use the brush twice daily with your favorite cleanser . Dalal also emphasizes that, as the most effective cleansing brushes do, “it allows skin-care products to absorb better into your skin after use.” For makeup artist Kornelija Slunjski , who likes to use it with a gel cleanser, says, “When I first started using it, I noticed a major difference in my skin’s texture.” It’s also convenient, not only because of its compact size but also the fact that it can stay charged for up to 650 uses: “For those who like low-maintenance product, it lasts for months after a full charge,” says Solomon. Another perk of the Luna 3? The back side features ridges that offer timed firming massage routines via the app that target the eyes, neck and décolletage area, cheeks, jawbones, and jawline. It’s worth noting, too, that all of these devices, whether silicone or not, are fully waterproof and can be taken into the shower.

Best (less-expensive) silicone facial cleansing brush

PMD Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device

While Mudgil agrees that Clarisonic and Foreo brushes are the most popular models, he also likes this silicone device from PMD. Harnessing the power of SonicGlow technology, the brush operates with 7,000 vibrations per minute that gently break down dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin. The PMD brush is odor-resistant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and (again) waterproof, thanks to the silicone, and (again) the brush head never needs to be replaced (unlike regular bristled brush heads). As far as frequency of use, Mudgil says that “once a week is really all folks need,” saying that “overuse is the main issue, which can irritate the skin, which in turn can stimulate acne and eczema.” He also says that it’s important to be mindful of what else is being used in your skin-care regimen. For example, “The use of retinoids or other exfoliants will make one more sensitive to the effects of facial brushing.” He suggests using a mild facial cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVe instead.

Best facial cleansing brush with bristles

Clarisonic Skincare Mia Prima Facial Cleansing & Pore Minimizing Skincare Device

Even though they don’t have the novelty of silicone, Clarisonic’s facial cleansing brushes with their old-school bristle design also came highly recommended, which wasn’t surprising considering the fact that the company put sonic brushes on the map. Five of our experts approve, including Alexandra Gold , a certified physician assistant at Schweiger Dermatology Group, and Solomon, who says, “Even though the brush is soft and gentle, it is powerful when it comes to removing makeup and dirt.” That’s because it “boasts an oscillation technology that distributes 300 micro-massage movements every minute,” according to Solomon. “There are clinical studies to confirm that the Clarisonic brush removes harmful pollutants build-up better than manual cleansing, and also that the brush helps active skin care penetrate better.” ( Dr. Joshua Zeichner , director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, also points to the fact that there is hard data to support the effectiveness of brushes like the Clarisonic.) And according to Solomon, using the brush consistently “enhances cell turnover and and makes skin smoother.”

Still, she warns against overuse, which “may impair the skin’s barrier function, ultimately drying it out and leading to possible irritation and inflammation,” adding that it’s a good idea to alternate with a manual brush or sponge (more on that below). Shara Strand , a makeup artist, agrees that Clarisonic brushes can be too rough for daily use. “I think the Clarisonic Mia is the best once in a while for taking off heavy makeup or masks,” she says, “but most people end up really using a lot of pressure when using the Clarisonic, pressing too hard into the skin.” (For this reason, Dalal also cautions against using any AHA acids in combination with it.) While the basic model has one mode and one speed, the smart version has multiple modes and a guided timer for each zone of your face. Our experts note that the brush should be cleaned regularly and replaced every couple of months for maximum efficacy.

Best (less-expensive) facial cleansing brush with bristles

Olay ProX Advanced Facial Cleansing Brush System

If you’re new to facial cleansing brushes and don’t want to spend too much money on one, Gold recommends Olay’s ProX brush system, which is designed with bristles, just like the go-to Clarisonic. “This facial brush comes at a more economic price, and although it does not have as many features, its cleansing results are comparable to the Clarisonic Mia Smart,” she says. “It is also water-resistant, which is convenient for using in the shower.” It has a two-speed rotating facial cleansing brush that removes stubborn makeup while gently exfoliating your skin, leaving it “primed for hydration,” according to Olay.

Best facial cleansing brush for travel

Foreo Luna Mini 2

The Luna Mini 2 may be smaller than the Luna 3 by about an inch in height (and rounder, as opposed to shaped like an oval), the silicone model that tops our list, but it still packs a lot of features into its compact size. The Mini, which delivers the same number of pulsations per minute as the full-size model, allows you to choose from eight intensities (the Luna Mini 3 will have 12 intensities when it is released), and has a dual-sided brush head offering three different zones with thicker and thinner touchpoints that accommodate all skin types, including normal, sensitive, and oily. It also stays charged for up to 300 uses on a single charge, making it ideal for travel. Worth noting: The Luna is additionally available in even smaller (and less expensive) sizes, including the Luna Go, Luna Play and Play Plus, and Fofo.

Best manual facial cleansing brush

Sephora Collection Precision Pore Cleansing Pad

Although Mudgil says that electrical brushes are “easier to use in a more precise manner,” he says that this manual brush from Sephora is “a good, inexpensive option.” It’s a flexible silicone pad with two sizes of tiny bristles that gently massage the face while providing a deeper clean than just using your hands. Like the sonic brushes, it helps exfoliate and soften the skin, but without the price tag. And because it’s small and more lightweight than your electronic versions, it can easily be taken with you to the gym or when you travel.

There’s a reason most facialists start treatment with a deep cleanse: Washing your face removes grime and prepares your skin for any products you apply after. So if you want to score a spa-level cleanse at home, we recommend finding the best facial cleansing brush on the market.

Foreo Luna Mini 3 Facial Cleansing Brush

Best dermatologist-recommended facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Silicone
  • Features: Rechargeable, waterproof, and delivers 12 massage intensities
  • Warranty: Yes
  • Best for: Long-lasting battery life
  • Pros: Dermatologist recommended, compact, and available in many colorways
  • Cons: Occasional connection issues with the device’s smartphone app

What reviewers say: “It’s so powerful and thorough, and it doesn’t damage my skin at all. It gently cleans all the makeup and dirt. I don’t have to double cleanse anymore. It’s a very pleasant and fast step of my skincare routine.”

Our testing review: “The Luna 3 mini is the best one yet. App connect isn’t needed (except for the initial set up), and the longer bristles are so soft and amazing. I switched from Clarisonic, which over-exfoliated even with the sensitive brush head, and I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth my skin felt after just the first use.”

After launching in 2013, Foreo has racked up impressive reviews and a devoted following. The Luna model combines soft silicone bristles to cleanse and low-frequency pulses that can help to tone your complexion over time. “The massaging aspect helps promote circulation in your face,” explains Dr. Jaliman, who uses the tool herself. “It’s very effective, and one minute of use gives you a good clean.”

Clarisonic Mia Smart

Best oscillating facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Extra fine bristles available in a range of materials
  • Features: Six modes for cleansing and massaging
  • Best for: Customizing your cleansing routine with unique settings and attachments
  • Pros: Many different brush head options sold separately
  • Cons: Long charge time before first use

What reviewers say: “It’s the best cleansing brush I’ve ever used, and I’ve used them all. I even use it on areas other than my face. This feels different as it almost kneads my skin while it cleans. The charcoal head is perfect. Noticeably improved skin tone.”

Our testing review: “I’ve been using this product almost every night as it leaves my face feeling exfoliated, fresh, and clean. Plus, it’s super powerful and easy to use, which means it doesn’t consume much of my time”

Clarisonic has history: If you’re a devotee, you likely remember the chaos that ensued when the brand shuttered in 2020. Thankfully, online retailer CurrentBody acquired the brand in 2021 (phew), and the device is as good as ever. We’re partial to the Mia Smart model, which syncs with a smartphone app to track your usage and guide you toward the best treatment for your skin. The device can do more than a deep cleanse: You can purchase other attachments for facial massage, exfoliation, and makeup application.

PMD Clean Smart Cleansing Device

Best double-sided facial cleansing brush .

  • Features: Four modes and waterproof
  • Best for: Cleansing and applying skin care products
  • Pros: No sockets or plugs on the device, so you can safely use it in the shower
  • Cons: Vibration may feel too strong for some skin types

What reviewers say: “I use it morning and night, every day. I love how my skin feels so clean and smooth afterwards. I’ve noticed less white heads and black heads. Another positive I’ve noticed washing with PMD is how much less cleanser I need to wash my face.”

Our testing review: “ This device earns high marks for its simple design: It doesn’t require an app to start treatment, and I can quickly toggle between different intensities. The soft, wavy side is unique to the tool and helps me smooth serums and moisturizers all around my face while giving me a gentle face massage.”

PMD’s cleansing brush is a smart, safe choice. The device is made of silicone, a material that resists bacteria buildup, and the bristles are short and soft for a gentle wash when you use it. The non-bristled side has a wavy pattern that’s great for massaging skin care products — like eye cream — onto your skin. Choose from the two pulsation intensities to help your product melt into place.

Tatcha Original Facial Cleansing Brush By Kashoen 1883

Best luxury facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Synthetic and natural goat hair blend
  • Features: Brush stand and cleanser mixing bowl included
  • Warranty: No
  • Best for: Gentle, everyday facial cleansing
  • Pros: Included brush stand helps bristles fully dry
  • Cons: Replacement brush not sold separately

What reviewers say: “ Since purchasing the cleansing brush kit, I find that the exfoliation is less intense, and I can exfoliate more often now. What’s more, like a tea ceremony, when I use my cleansing brush kit, I enjoy a true self-care ritual.”

Our testing review: “ This brush set looks gorgeous on my vanity, and it incentivizes me to wash my face — the bristles feel like air-spun fluff on my skin. I prefer to use the brush with a gentle foamy cleanser for the softest effect.”

If you’re looking to make your daily cleanse feel like a happy ritual rather than a chore, Tatcha’s cleansing brush is the one for you. The brush comes with a stand that allows the bristles to air dry after each use. And the included composite wood bowl keeps your routine sanitary. Swirl your cleanser and a few drops of water in the bowl, then dip the brush inside and sweep the sudsy lather around the contours of your face before rinsing.

Our testing review: “Olay’s facial cleansing tool is similar to others on the market (it employs an oscillating round brush) however, it’s the simplest to navigate. Just click the button to choose your setting, apply cleanser, and you’re good to go.”

Best cleansing brush for face and body .

  • Brush material: Hypoallergenic soft bristles and silicone
  • Features: Water-resistant and includes four brush attachment heads
  • Best for: Exfoliating and cleansing face and body
  • Pros: Ventilated travel case included
  • Cons: Some users have issues recharging the device after months of use

What reviewers say: “I use this every morning and every night, anywhere from three to 15 minutes and it has made a huge difference in my skin. I used to wash my face with just my fingertips, but this is truly working in your pores and getting everything out. My favorite brush head is the silicone option. It’s really easy for me to use with products and cleanse.”

Our testing review: “The body brush attachment has been a game changer for my skin — it preps my limbs for self-tanner and helps body oils and lotions seep into my skin instead of sitting on top. I also give it bonus points because it’s sleek and easy to store.”

Vanity Planet’s cleansing brush set includes a whopping four brush heads to supplement your skin care routine in various ways. Choose between the silicone or bristle brush attachments for your daily wash, and opt for the exfoliating head to revive dull skin weekly. This set also includes a body brush to smooth your limbs and a ventilated case to keep your device clean and organized.

Skin Gym Cleania 3-in-1 Cleansing Brush Set

Best exfoliating facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Silicone, bamboo, and fiber brush heads included
  • Features: Three adjustable speeds and three unique brush attachments
  • Best for: Exfoliating while cleansing
  • Pros: Straightforward to use
  • Cons: Bristled heads may be irritating to very sensitive skin types

What reviewers say: “Within three days of using this, I saw a significant difference in my skin and my acne cleared up almost immediately. It feels fresh and relaxing, and I leave feeling refreshed with a deep clean. And the different brushes help with sensitivity.”

Our testing review: “I’m partial to the bamboo brush head; it helps cleanse my combination skin without irritating it. The device has a stand for easy charging and quick access to the tool during wash time.”

The beauty of this cleansing brush is the size of the brush head: The attachments are a bit smaller than other models. The petite brush heads edge into the tighter contours of your face (by your ears, nose, and lips) and give you more control over the treatment area. You can also tailor your treatment to your skin type with the included silicone, bamboo, and fiber brush heads.

Therabody TheraFace Pro

Best multi-purpose cleansing brush .

  • Features: Two-hour battery life and multiple intensity and speed settings
  • Best for: Cleansing, massaging, and lifting your complexion
  • Pros: Device includes six attachments for microcurrent, light therapy, and massage
  • Cons: Not fully waterproof

Our testing review: “It’s truly a do-it-all tool that has improved upon the existing LED light and microcurrent science and designs to make this new innovation stand out above the rest. If you’re a fan of facial tools — or immediate gratification and results — it’s worth splurging for this multi-functional facial device.”

Theragun’s TheraFace Pro is a true investment piece. Not only do you get amazing deep cleansing benefits from the silicone wash attachment, but also you’ll have access to attachments that help lift, soothe, and brighten your complexion over time. You can choose from three intensity settings with the cleansing brush attachment; each one feels comfortable on the skin. For more info on this do-it-all tool, read our full Theraface Pro review .

ReFa Clear Cleansing Brush

Best cleansing brush for acne .

  • Brush material: Ultra fine hair bristles
  • Features: Three intensity modes, waterproof, and USB charging port
  • Best for: Gently cleansing skin
  • Pros: Ionic technology helps dislodge grime from pores
  • Cons: Brush head needs replacing after three to six months of use

What reviewers say: “I love how soft the bristles are which allow me to use this brush no matter what skin issues I’m battling, like even after micro needling. It is soft enough to use yet I can still tell my skin has gotten a really good cleansing. I love its sleek look and the handle is just right. The contours of it allow for an easy grip.”

Our testing review: “This brush is one of the gentlest options I tried; I didn’t feel an ounce of friction while using it. I’ll reach for this one whenever I’m dealing with an inflamed breakout to help deep clean without making bumps angry.”

It may seem counterintuitive, but washing your face too much or using a harsh cleanser can cause an uptick in acne or breakouts for some skin types. Gentle cleansing brushes are the safest choice — too much scrubbing can irritate existing pimples. This brush is the stuff of dreams for those dealing with breakouts (or those with sensitive skin). The long bristles go soft on the skin while amping up the caliber of your cleanse, so you don’t have to resort to scrubbing.

Kat Burki Skin Canvas Caribbean Silk Sea Sponge

Best facial cleansing sponge .

  • Material: Caribbean silk sea sponge
  • Features: Soft, delicate texture
  • Warranty: No
  • Best for: Exfoliating and enhancing facial cleansers
  • Pros: Maintains texture and quality over extended periods of use
  • Cons: May be too soft for those looking for strong physical exfoliation

Our testing review: “This tool is my first foray in facial cleansing sponges, and I’m hooked. The texture is surprisingly soft, it’s easy to travel with, and it’s unfussy to use.”

This tiny facial cleansing tool packs a punch. Run it under warm water, and watch it expand and soften into a soft pillowy texture. The sponge sops up your cleanser and seamlessly redistributes the face wash around your complexion, lightly exfoliating your skin at the same time. It’s malleable so that you can squeeze one end to target hard-to-reach areas like the folds around your nose.

Nion Beauty Opus Luxe

Best massaging facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Silicone brush head
  • Features: Three vibration settings, integrated timer, and two surfaces for cleansing and massaging
  • Best for: Gently cleansing and massaging
  • Pros: Helps cleanse and lift complexion simultaneously
  • Cons: May not lather all facial cleansers

What reviewers say: “I’m so happy I have this as part of my morning and night routines. The silicone bristles are very pliable, and I like the three different vibration settings. I’ve seen a noticeable difference after just two weeks of use. The Opus Luxe leaves my skin feeling cleaner, smoother, and more radiant.”

Our testing review: “After using the cleansing side of the brush, I flip it around to give myself a quick facial massage in the morning, and it works wonders for eliminating puffiness. I apply face oil on my skin, then massage it upwards and outwards from the center of my face to wake up my skin.”

Like other options on this list, Nion Beauty’s facial cleansing brush features a silicone brush head that’s easy to clean and holds up well with use. However, this tool also employs ionic technology to boost your cleanse: The negatively charged ions help pull grime out of your pores. The flip side of the brush has a soft surface you can use to massage away tension.

Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush

Best gentle facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Silicone and fine soft bristles
  • Features: Silicone bristles help massage skin
  • Best for: Deep cleansing and light exfoliation
  • Pros: Inexpensive, easy-to-use brush
  • Cons: The brush has long bristles that don’t scrub as intensely as shorter-bristled options

What reviewers say: “I have had one of these most of my life. Only had to be replaced once within the past 20 years. Love this product and can’t wash my face without it. Perfect blend of soft bristles and firm massager in one tool.”

Our testing review: “This tool’s combination of soft bristles and silicone nubs works to eradicate any leftover makeup, sweat, or sunscreen. Its small, simple design is easy to stash in my gym bag or take on a weekend trip.”

Shiseido creates amazing makeup brushes (and so much more), so it’s no surprise that the brand’s face brush is a top performer. Many shoppers have stayed loyal to the tool for decades, proving it’s a well-designed staple. It’s manual, so you can control the pressure level — go with a light touch to avoid irritation.

True Glow by Conair Sonic Facial Brush

Best budget facial cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Soft bristle brush head
  • Features: Water resistant, two-speed settings, and sonic technology
  • Best for: Exfoliating oily skin
  • Pros: Includes three brush heads
  • Cons: Bristles may be irritating to sensitive skin types

What reviewers say: “I have combination skin and I loved the way this cleaned my skin. It felt so smooth and clean after using this. It works well with my cleanser and I don’t have to use a lot to clean my face.”

You’ll get good exfoliation with Conair’s facial cleansing brush . The bristles are firmer than other options on this list, so it’s a tool you only need to use once or twice weekly. The device includes two replacement heads, making it an affordable choice that sets you up for months of use. Sonic technology aids the bristles in efficiently cleansing your complexion.

Sephora Collection Facial Cleansing Tool

Best manual silicone face cleansing brush .

  • Brush material: Silicone bristles
  • Features: Contains both small bristles and larger nubs for different facial areas
  • Best for: Travel and taking on the go
  • Pros: Compact and easy to clean
  • Cons: May not create sudsy lather, depending on the cleanser

What reviewers say: “This works so well that I ended up buying additional ones for my family. A little cleanser goes a long way on this and it provides just enough exfoliation to really get in and clean out junk and makeup. Absolutely worth the $8.”

Our testing review: “The teardrop shape of this tool is key. You can edge the pointy corner into creases and smaller areas of the face, and the wide end covers larger facial planes in a few sweeps.”

Although this tool is the smallest on our list, it doesn’t underperform. The pad is well-designed, with two sizes of silicone bristles for different areas of the face. It’s also flexible, so you can bend it around your fingers to easily work the tool around your complexion. The uncomplicated design lets you clean it quickly after each use.

What is a Facial Cleansing Brush?

Facial cleansing brushes are tools that help you wash your face well. These brushes range from small textured pads or sponges to souped-up electrical devices that vibrate to work the cleanser into your skin. “It’s like using an electric toothbrush for your face,” explains Dr. Stacy Chimento , board-certified dermatologist of Riverchase Dermatology. “You are also enhancing blood flow beneath the skin’s surface, helping your capillaries function better and supply more oxygen to the skin,” Chimento adds. The other big benefit of facial cleansing brushes is exfoliation . “The tools help get rid of dead skin cells, so you have smoother brighter skin,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman . “Makeup goes on easier, and the brushes help remove any leftover makeup that washing alone doesn’t get rid of,” Dr. Jaliman explains.

The Different Types of Facial Cleansing Brushes

  • Manual Cleansing Brushes: The simplest facial cleansing brushes are textured pads or poufs that you can use across your complexion. These won’t clean your skin as deeply as electric brushes, but they still offer a touch of exfoliation and help to work your cleanser into your pores for a good wash. That’s why they’re the best option for those with sensitive skin.
  • Electric Cleansing Brushes: These brushes use energy to vibrate or oscillate — motions that help make your cleanser sudsy and loosen up debris deep in your pores for a thorough clean. You can find various options in different shapes and sizes and ones made with different materials (more on that below). Electric options generally deliver more exfoliation than manual alternatives, so they’re great for resurfacing skin, decreasing dullness, and clearing excess oiliness.
  • Sonic Cleansing Brushes: Some electric facial cleansing brushes employ sonic technology to improve your cleanse quality. Sonic cleansing devices use rapidly moving bristles to help lift away grease, makeup, and grime when you massage the brush head onto your complexion.
  • Oscillating Cleansing Brushes: You’ll typically find oscillating facial cleansing brushes in tools with round brush heads. The brush head moves rapidly in a circular motion, offering a 360-degree cleanse for your pores.

What to Look for in the Best Facial Cleansing Brush

  • Brush head material: Nylon and silicone are the most common materials used for facial cleansing brushes. Both are safe for most skin types, but it’s important to patch-test the tool on the inside of your arm before using it on your face: If you feel any irritation or itchiness, seek an alternative. Silicone bristles have the advantage of antimicrobial properties. “They keep bacteria away more efficiently than other bristles,” notes Dr. Jaliman.
  • Bristle length: Shorter bristles are generally firmer, so they’re the best option for those looking to exfoliate and deep-clean skin. Longer bristles are gentler on the skin, making them the best choice for those who have sensitive or reactive skin.
  • Speed and intensity settings: Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick recommends looking for brushes with multiple settings so you can adjust the intensity based on your skin’s tolerance. Start with the lowest setting, then work your way up as long as you’re not experiencing irritation or redness.

How to Use a Facial Cleansing Brush

  • Remove makeup: Dr. Jaliman recommends removing any foundation, eye shadow , lipstick , or blush before you use a cleansing brush. This step ensures a proper clean — it prevents the bristles from coating with makeup.
  • Select a cleanser: “Choose a gentle cleanser formulated for your skin type,” says Dr. Jaliman. She advises using a formula without microbeads or other exfoliating ingredients, like glycolic acid, because they might be too abrasive when combined with the brush head.
  • Apply cleanser directly onto brush head: Pump a dime-size amount of cleanser directly onto the bristles. Cleansing brushes help a little face wash go a long way, so you’ll likely need less cleanser when using the brush versus washing your face with your hands.
  • Choose intensity setting: If your tool has different speed and vibration settings, start with the lowest options, working your way up to one that feels comfortable as you wash.
  • Work around your face: Use extra light pressure and work in small circular motions around your face, says Dr. Jaliman. Aim for about one minute of massaging the brush onto your skin, then turn off the device and rinse your face and cleansing brush with warm water.
  • Moisturize: Since cleansing brushes exfoliate your skin, hydrating your complexion afterward is important. Whether youre using the tool in the morning or at night, follow your usual skincare routine, making sure to incorporate moisturizing formulas .

Is It Safe to Use a Facial Cleansing Brush?

Facial cleansing brushes are safe for almost everyone. However, those with sensitive skin or acne should be careful about their tool choice and consult a dermatologist before using a new device. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King says that silicone nubs are the best bet for those with sensitivity. “They exfoliate without being too abrasive,” Hadley explains. Be mindful of the other active ingredients you use. Garshick says that harsh active ingredients combined with a cleansing brush can make the skin more sensitive and reactive. If your skin is easily irritated, start out using your brush once or twice weekly, building up to every other day at most. To avoid bacteria buildup, wash your brush with soap and warm water after each use.

How We Tested the Best Facial Cleansing Brushes of 2022

Our beauty tests put a range of cleansing facial tools and brushes to the test over a month. Testers rated their tool’s performance, ease of use, and overall effect on the skin. To ensure all devices were thoroughly tested, each one was patch tested on the body and then on the face to learn how each facial cleansing tool interacted with all skin types — dry, combination, and oily. Additionally, while testing, we assessed each tool’s material to know which textiles are the best for exfoliation, makeup removal, and overall cleansing.

Cleansing Kabuki Brush

Best for Sensitive Skin

Tata harper cleansing kabuki brush.

Facial cleansing brushes clean the skin more thoroughly than your hands or a washcloth can; whether manually or mechanically, their bristles effectively remove dirt, oil, and makeup from pores. They also help to exfoliate skin, making it feel smoother and look more radiant. That said, you can overdo it. "Using a cleansing brush too frequently can over-exfoliate the skin," says dermatologist Michael Garner, MD, a board of advisor at Matter of Fact . "Think about your skin type; if you have sensitive skin or a condition such as atopic dermatitis or rosacea, you could exacerbate it with a cleansing brush's physical exfoliation." Otherwise, a good rule of thumb is to reach for your brush once or twice a week. Shop our favorite facial cleansing brushes here.

The facial cleansing brush category exists thanks to the Clarisonic! Its first-to-market brush technology is six times more effective than cleansing with your hands. The device offers two different speeds with a pulsing timer to guide you. We like that the bristles are extra gentle and won't disrupt the skin barrier as much as a strong exfoliant could.

This device comes with multiple brush heads and six speed settings to cleanse, firm, massage, and infuse a serum into the skin. Its antimicrobial protection repels stains and odor-causing bacteria that could otherwise grow on the brush. An automatic cleansing timer alerts you when it's time to move to the next target area.

This soft silicone brush cleans skin deeply while also clearing the way for the skincare you apply afterward to absorb. Customize your experience with an app and three different modes—gentle, deep, and regular.

Need something you can tote around easily? Check out this compact scrubber. Its versatile brush removes dirt in 90 seconds; then, flip the warm device to use the opposite side to massage in any serums or creams. The brand says that doing this for another 90 seconds helps to boost absorption and enhance blood flow.

This simple brush gets the job done, and then some. With 7,000 vibrations per minute, the brush breaks down dirt and oil effectively. You can click between four cleansing modes, and you won't need to replace the brush head; its silicone material is easy to clean and hygienic.

You likely know Therabody for its beloved massage gun , but its face tool—which won an Oprah Beauty O-ward last year—is worthy of your attention, too. The percussive skincare device comes with a bunch of interchangeable attachments, one of which is a cleansing ring made of soft silicone bristles. You'll also get a skin-toning microcurrent ring and an LED light therapy ring. It really does it all.

If you have sensitive skin, Tata Harper's brush might be the one for you. "In general, I recommend that patients search for brushes with soft, non-abrasive bristles, especially if they have sensitive skin," Garner says.

Meet the expert:

  • Dr. Arora of The Face Bible (GP and Aesthetics doctor for the NHS as well as skincare expert in association with FOREO)

Do facial cleansing brushes really work?

While they do work, before you part with your hard-earned cash and invest in one, it's important to understand how . The best way to think of a facial cleansing brush is as lightly exfoliating facial massage tools that work a product into your skin more thoroughly to allow for a deeper cleanse. It can be anything from face washes to serums. Less dirt, oil and grime means clearer pores and, as an added bonus, a lot of brushes work to stimulate the skin to boost circulation too. That means a plumper complexion and added glow - who wouldn't want that?

Do dermatologists recommend facial cleansing brushes?

Yes! Dr. Arora of The Face Bible (GP and Aesthetics doctor for the NHS as well as skincare expert in association with FOREO) told us: "Skin cleansing is important for the removal of dirt, debris and sebum. Less dirt, oil and grime leads to clearer pores and a better overall skin complexion. Skin cleansing can be enhanced by the use of a facial cleansing brush, provided the device is gentle and it is used correctly.

"Typically, the more traditional cleansing brushes with nylon bristles can lead to over exfoliation and irritation to the skin. This can lead to more harm than good and can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. Often, these brushes can harbour bacteria and exacerbate acne/sensitive skin types."

Having said this, she continued: "Silicone-based facial cleansing devices are great for elevating your skincare routine. They are super gentle on the skin, the bristles are easy to clean and super hygienic. I recommend the LUNA 3 cleansing device by FOREO to all of my patients. It works wonders for all skin types. The silicone bristles combined with T-sonic™ pulsations help to shift up to 99.5% of dirt, grime and oil from the skin’s surface. Your skincare is going to go a long way if the skin has been prepped perfectly before hand. I would recommend this type of silicone-based device as it is easy to ensure that the cleansing process is gentle yet effective. In fact it’s so gentle that you can use it up to twice a day and incorporate it into your morning and evening skincare routine!"

By Elle Turner , Lottie Winter and Georgia Trodd

Can I use facial cleansing brush everyday?

We recommend easing yourself in gently by using a facial cleansing brush once or twice a week instead of every day at first, then you can build yourself up to daily usage. Most skin types will be able to handle daily use, and some facial cleansing brushes are super gentle so can be used as often as you'd like - such as Clarisonic's Mia Smart .

Just be wary: using a cleansing brush too vigorously has the potential to leave skin red , sore and inflamed . Our advice? Resist the urge to over scrub, keep things gentle and always read the directions thoroughly before you give one a whirl.
