There’s Never Been a Better Time to Travel for Sports

From the fifa world cup to the premier league and every screaming goal in between, there’s nothing like scoring a front row seat—even if it means crossing an ocean or two..

Published on 12/12/2022 at 4:58 PM

“Listen, I’ve had sex. I’ve been in love. I’ve traveled the world. But I’ve never experienced anything—anything—like that.”

Those were the words that greeted me as I sat in a nondescript central London pub called King Charles I, fresh off a six hour flight from DC and preparing to meet up with my best friend Connor who had arrived in London from Minneapolis the day before. A few hours before, Connor, a fellow diehard Arsenal supporter, had managed to finagle his way into Emirates Stadium to watch his beloved Gunners take on Nottingham Forest in a Premier League matchup. Arsenal stole the show with a five-nil win, but I’m pretty sure he would have had the same reaction even if they’d come away with a loss.

We were there to see football—a.k.a. soccer—racking up as many matches as possible along with a few stadium tours and a visit to the National Football Museum in Manchester . It was a pilgrimage of sorts, two American fans realizing their dream of cheering alongside fellow fans as they watched star athletes they’ve only ever witnessed on television darting around the pitch in real time. And while each of us had been to plenty of hometown sporting events before—sat courtside at NBA games, fought nosebleeds in below-freezing temperatures at NFL and college football showdowns, and even shared a pair of Mets season tickets during the late-great Shea Stadium’s final year in action—transporting oneself across the ocean to one of the holy temples of the Beautiful Game, in all its eardrum-popping glory, was an entirely new kind of magic.

arsenal women

Throughout the next eight days, we found ourselves reliving the splendor at stadiums across the country. We sat in the press booth at Meadow Park , while Arsenal’s star-studded women’s side toppled West Ham in a three-one defeat, wincing as beloved team captain Kim Little hobbled off the field with a soon-to-be-confirmed ACL injury. We raced from Manchester to Liverpool late one evening, braving the frigid weather to snag two tickets in an illicit handshake deal and file into Anfield’s Road Stand for a Champions League match, our seats smashed right up against visiting Napoli’s vociferous away section.

Later, we got the royal treatment in a hospitality box in Southampton, sipping Champagne while the embattled home side gave up four goals to skyrocketing Newcastle. We toured Emirates in North London, Stamford Bridge in Chelsea , and Wembley , home to England’s decorated national team, and in between, joined countless others clad in Arsenal’s signature red and white at area pubs to root the lads (and lasses) on over pints of cask ale.

It was early November 2022, and the world was emerging from its pandemic-induced hibernation in search of the kind of unadulterated joy only globetrotting can bring. For sports fans, especially those following international teams, the promise of seeing your heroes jump off the screen and into your immediate surroundings provided even more incentive to finally buy that long-awaited plane ticket. And with so many mass spectator events returning to their new normal of restriction-eased programming— Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 , the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing , Hanoi’s 31st Southeast Asian Games , the 2022 Kentucky Derby in the States , the Men's 16th Rugby League World Cup in England , the multi-city 2022 Formula One World Championship , the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand , to name just a few—there’s never been a more exciting time to travel for sports.

rugby world cup

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) , a specialized agency formed to promote “responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism,” sports represents one of the industry’s fastest growing sectors. At the organization’s 2021 World Sports Tourism Congress in Lloret de Mar in Catalonia, Anna Caula (the region’s Secretary General for Sport and Physical Activity) solidified the relationship between tourism and sports—one the UNWTO calls “interrelated and complementary.” She stated, “Tourism is a great tool to open up our territory to the world, and sport must also be at the centre [sic] of creating this ecosystem. We must put the focus on sport as it moves millions of people at different levels, both nationally and internationally.”

The numbers speak for themselves. In an October 2022 study entitled Global Sports Tourism Industry , the France-based, AI-powered market research platform ReportLinker forecasted that the world’s sports tourism market, valued at $769.7 billion USD in 2020, is set to reach $1.7 trillion USD over the next five years. For you econ nerds, that’s a compound annual growth rate of 11.7% between 2020 and 2027. Soccer-focused tourism alone, ReportLinker predicted, will swell to $671.2 billion USD over the same time period, enjoying an unprecedented 13.6% CAGR.

women's euro cup

And it’s not just the big boys—emphasis on the word boys —benefiting from this uptick of in-person attendance. Previously under-represented corners of the playing field, most specifically women’s professional sports, are also recording major gains. Take the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 , which drew an aggregate attendance of 574,875 to various pitches throughout host country England, more than double 2017’s total. July 31’s final, a high-stakes battle between England and Germany at Wembley, went down in front of 87,192 ticket-holders—the largest audience in the history of European national team tournament games, men’s or women’s. As it turns out, a rising tide does indeed lift all ships—especially those who’ve long awaited their righteous due.

US Open

The facts are the facts, sure, but no amount of calculations can answer one key question when it comes to traveling for sports: Why? Why are everyday citizens suddenly willing to shell out hundreds, even thousands, of their hard-earned cash to experience their favorite teams in the flesh? Especially when they can most likely access better views of the same game streaming directly into their living rooms in pristine 4D? The answer, in short, is the vibes.

“My mom, 73, is a HUGE tennis fan,” says Nashville-based lifestyle journalist and avid tennis enthusiast Kristin Luna . “She's the type who watches every tournament on TV, men's and women's, from start to finish no matter how minor. But there’s nothing that compares to the energy of being inside a stadium, especially during a heated match or rivalry. The shared experience of watching a favorite athlete or team play with fellow fans makes the hassles of traveling right now —the crowds, the flight cancellations, the apps requiring you to show your vax card that inevitably fail in the moment—worth it.”

Years of pandemic-fueled lockdowns has only made Luna and her mom more dedicated to attending games in-person. “We did virtually no traveling for the better part of two years—a lot of the major tournaments were canceled, and those that eventually were rescheduled, were done so with empty stadiums,” she continues. “When you take into account the relatively short shelf life of professional or college athletes, two years can be a large percentage of an athlete’s career.”

Socceroos

For sports fans, it’s now or never. “We've been so isolated for so long that we crave community and entertainment, and nothing satisfies those cravings more than sport,” says Lavender Baj , a freelance journalist and lifelong Liverpool supporter based in Sydney, Australia. “Those major sporting events where people from all over the world come together to share a common love are just really special. Whenever I travel for sport, I end up bumping into another Aussie, and there's just this sense of community that you feel, despite the fact that you don't know each other from a bar of soap.”

Tourism on this scale impacts much more than the teams, stadiums, and onsite vendors, of course. Those traveling for sporting events are likely to spend their money outside of the playing grounds, whether it’s at local shops, hotels, and restaurants or cultural and sightseeing opportunities that work to round out their trips. That’s the hope, at least, for Chris Allison, VP in charge of North American tourism for Tourism Australia , as his country prepares to co-host the next FIFA Women’s World Cup this coming summer.

women's world cup

“With Australia’s reopening to the world in February , after two years of international travel being on hold, the tournament is a timely reminder of how sport and tourism can bring people together and reconnect them with people and places,” says Allison. “And with five Australian cities hosting parts of the tournament—Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane—the World Cup is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Australia and remind people of all the wonderful attributes that make our country a great place to visit.”

Traveling for sport is also giving a boost to a previously niche corner of the tourism industry: sports travel agencies . Companies that specialize in designing upmarket sporting event packages geared toward families, corporate groups, club teams, and even solo travelers willing to throw down are popping up all around the world, from the States to the UK, Australia, South Africa, and India. Wherever sports fans live, a tailored travel agency is only a few clicks away.

sports travel

With more than 30 years in the business, Roadtrips president Dave Guenther is happily riding the current wave. “We’re having a record year and bookings for 2023 and 2024 are strong,” he says, having just returned from hosting groups at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. “Sporting events, especially the big international ones we specialize in, are definitely bucket-list experiences for many folks. I also think, as more people have become familiar with Roadtrips and the chance to customize and personalize their experience around these events, it’s added to the accessibility and ability to attend.”

And it’s not just rabid fans getting into the games these days. As Tourism Australia’s Allison alluded, there’s much more to sports travel than simply attending a game or two. “There’s a tremendous electricity and buzz surrounding a sporting event, from cultural events to concerts to just the gathering of so many enthusiasts in one place,” adds Guenther. “I’ve had many clients tell me that they don’t normally watch sports on television, but that being there live was one of the most thrilling experiences of their lives.”

Take it from Baj, who made her own bucket list journey to England to a few Premier League fixtures earlier this year. “Even if you're not a massive sports fan, there's no way you can go to a stadium as iconic as [Manchester United’s] Old Trafford or [Liverpool’s] Anfield and not be overwhelmed with emotion,” she reflects. “Those moments are some of the greatest moments in my life, and I want everyone to experience them at least once.”

travel for sports

Back in the UK, Connor and I caught an Uber from our Airbnb in Whitechapel up to North London for an 11 am self-guided tour of Emirates Stadium, home to our mighty Arsenal. As our driver, Terry, navigated north toward Shoreditch, he turned to survey us in the backseat.

“You’re going up to the Emirates, yeah?” he asked casually.

“Yeah,” I said. “Are you an Arsenal supporter?”

“Born and raised, yeah, season ticket-holder. Me wife’s a steward, and me daughter, too. Me other daughter, she’s a schoolteacher, but she loves the game,” he said, nodding.

For the next 30 minutes, Terry told us all about growing up in Arsenal’s backyard of Islington, back when they played at old Highbury, an Art Deco beauty that held court as the “Home of Football” from 1913 until 2006. He pointed out where some of the former greats still lived, down private cobblestone streets lined with manicured English gardens. He told us how he had picked up a teenage boy some weeks back, only to find out he played for Arsenal’s prestigious youth academy and that his older brother had a few caps with the main squad under his belt.

Pulling onto Highbury Road, Terry gestured toward a friendly looking cafe that employed a clever pay it forward scheme, working with patrons to provide meals for local community members in need. He also showed us his favorite game day pubs, homey corner affairs he said were guarded by tough security officers during particularly heated rivalries. “Anybody from the other side try to come in, they get sorted quick,” he quipped.

sports travel agency

Just before we pulled into the roundabout leading to the hulking, ultra-modern stadium, Terry had one last question for us: “So, you’s got your Arsenal tattoos yet?”

Connor, not a tattoo guy, shook his head definitively. “Haven’t yet, but I’d like to,” I said. “You?”

“Just a small one,” he said, winking and rolling up his left pant leg to reveal a massive Arsenal crest in full color, the bright red shield and golden cannon stretching half-way around his calf.

Traveling for sports isn’t just about the games, it’s about every second of the experience. There’s hearing the players shout directives at each other straight from the sidelines. There’s shouting along to the cheeky supporters’ songs in a sea of undulating bodies. There’s downing savory pies and pints of cider between halves, bartering with street vendors for the last throwback scarf, and snapping selfies beneath the lights, the pitch’s dewy green filling in the background. And then there’s meeting Terry, the kindly driver with whom you share a language, a passion, perhaps even a culture only other fans can truly comprehend.

Plan A Travel Vacation For Exploring The Culture Of Caribbean Sports

Travel to play a round of golf on your caribbean vacation or catch live sport events.

By Melissa Alvarado Sierra | Published on July 29, 2022

In the Caribbean, sports are a way of life — a way to connect and find community. There's an ingrained culture of sporting excellence on the islands, and locals are deeply dedicated to their favorite pastimes, often becoming global leaders in baseball, cricket, football, car racing and basketball, to name a few. It's more achievable than one would expect for enjoying Caribbean sports on your next vacation — start by heading to where the locals play.

Witness The Passion Of Sport In The Caribbean

Local Sports Games In The Caribbean

Since the Caribbean is famous for many sports, it's easy to find a way to join in the fun, no matter where you travel for vacation. Puerto Ricans are known as being "sports mad" because of their passionate cheers and unwavering loyalty to their favorite teams. They're especially devoted to basketball and closely follow the local league known as Baloncesto Superior Nacional. Islanders love to cheer for their favorite teams across the island's many basketball courts. One of the most iconic places to immerse yourself in the local basketball culture is the Carmelo Anthony court, named after the famous Puerto Rican NBA player. The Instagram-worthy court, found in the colorful neighborhood of La Perla in Old San Juan, is where locals and visitors play in front of curious and excited onlookers who cheer no matter who's winning. While you're there, grab a cold local beer (I highly recommend Medalla) and an alcapurria from El Callejón de la Tanca as you cheer on the players.

Spectate Sport Events In The Islands

Once you step foot in the Dominican Republic, you'll see why "pelota" (the local name for baseball) is not only the country's favorite sport but also one of its most famous exports. Baseball is more than a sport in the Dominican Republic; it's a way of life, and it has united the country more than anything else. Many young Dominicans dream of following the footsteps of famous baseball stars Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martínez, Robinson Canó and Bartolo Colón. And, with the amount of interest, training and support available in the country, many make that dream come true. Ask locals about an upcoming "juego de pelota" happening close by, and you'll probably have a few options to choose from. Once you arrive at a game, you'll find a huge party of upbeat music and delicious food.

Jamaicans are football fanatics, too, especially after their beloved team, the Reggae Boys, qualified for the World Cup in the late nineties. Today, the sport attracts animated crowds across the different stadiums, mostly at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Another sport that is unique to this part of the world is the ancient Ulama — also known as Maya football, which is still played in Belize today. Described as a mix of soccer and basketball, it was originally played thousands of years ago by the pre-Columbian people of ancient Mesoamerica. Archaeologists have found rubber balls, used to play Ulama, dating back to 1600 BC and more than a thousand ancient ball courts.

While the Maya were not very tall, they were strong and agile with what some call a masochistic pain tolerance. Ulama was a brutal ball game, with players suffering from severe injuries and even death. The type of Ulama played today in Belize is a much milder version to be sure. Try to catch a game of this indigenous sport for a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the past.

Games Under The Caribbean Sun

Bowler pitching in a game of cricket . The Caribbean.

With year-round sunny and pleasant weather, Barbadians see outdoor sports action almost every day. For example, golfing in Barbados is huge. But you won't find many traditional American team sports such as baseball in Barbados, because cricket is their game of choice. The island is perhaps most famous for being the home of cricket legends Desmond Leo Haynes and Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge. There are several carefully manicured grounds that serve as the home of international cricket tournaments, but the Kensington Oval is the pre-eminent home of Barbadian cricket, established in 1882. Visit the stadium for a tour of the grounds, and if you're lucky, catch a game and cheer on the local team.

Cricket is actually the national game in Jamaica. If you get a chance to watch a match live, you'll be immersed in Jamaican culture. Reggae beats play between breaks, and delicious jerk chicken perfumes the air. Surrounded by the infectious energy — and with a Red Stripe (the local beer) in hand — you can't help but dance and cheer, even if you don't understand the game. For a taste of this very Jamaican experience, look no further than Sabina Park or the new Greenfield Stadium (built for the Cricket World Cup). If you want to make new friends in Jamaica, be sure to bring up cricket, and you'll see how fast everyone will try to convince you that their West Indies team is the best there is.

Travel For Golfing In Puerto Rico

Traveling for golfing in Puerto Rico is so popular thanks to the almost constant nice weather. The country boasts some of the most picturesque golf courses in the world, with sweeping ocean views and tropical forest backgrounds. Plan your trip around the Puerto Rico Open, an annual international golf tournament that gathers the best players in the world as part of the PGA tour. It's a beautifully busy and exciting time on the island; there's a special charm to golfing in the Caribbean sunshine.

Exhilarating Caribbean Sports

Traveler rowing bamboo raft, whilst on a cruise vacation in Montego Bay. Jamaica.

If you're more into water sports, a heart-pounding sport you can practice in Jamaica is river rafting. The sport was originally introduced by actor Errol Flynn in the 1950s, after using rafts made out of bamboo to carry bananas over the Rio Grande river. People then started to use the rafts as an adventure down the river instead of just using them to transport goods. Today, you can take a river rafting tour in the Rio Grande, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay or Falmouth and enjoy the spectacular views as you glide over the water. It's a great way to cool off on a scorching hot day, too.

Another fun sport to watch or participate in is cycling in Belize. It's incredibly popular in the country, with many races running between Belize City and San Ignacio, about 150-miles roundtrip. The route is made all the more difficult by the tropical sun. Teams from Central America come to Belize to practice and compete, and these events include classes and opportunities for children and seniors to cycle as well. You can follow riders safely from your car, driving to different checkpoints, or you can join the crowds by the road as they celebrate the passing riders.

The Best Way to Watch Live Sports Without Cable in 2024

Sports for cord-cutters: how to watch sports without cable

The best way to watch live sports without cable is to use a live sports streaming service. Picking the right streaming service requires you to consider several factors. Luckily, we’ve been reviewing, testing, and analyzing the streaming platforms so you don’t have to go in blind. Here’s everything you need to know when setting out to watch live sports without cable.

How to Choose Your Sports Streaming Service

If you love live sports, there’s no reason to stay with cable or satellite. Today, you can stream all your favorite sports on your TV, tablet, or mobile phone. In fact, some sports are now exclusive to streaming services. All you need is an internet connection.

We’ll break down all the best Live TV Streaming Services to stream sports online.

How to Stream Your Favorite Sports Team Without Cable

The most important factor is making sure that the service has the most games of your favorite team or league. It’s never fun to buy into a platform just to find out that they have only a few select games after you’ve paid for a subscription.

DIRECTV STREAM , Fubo , Hulu Live TV , Sling TV , and YouTube TV all offer sports channels, most with national sports channels, regional sports networks, local channels, and league networks as part of your service.

With these services, you can watch most live sports using Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, Android TV, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, and your Smart TV.

If you are looking to learn how to stream a specific sport or team, start with our individual league pages. Where to watch sports live: Sports streaming options

Live streaming services for sports: how much do they cost.

Most streaming TV services like DIRECTV STREAM , Hulu Live TV , Fubo , and YouTube TV are $65-$85, with Sling TV being the only budget streaming TV option with live sports at $40 per month. With all of these options, you will be able to watch nationally televised sports on major channels like ESPN.

If you want to watch games on Regional Sports Networks, your best options are between DIRECTV STREAM and Fubo . To watch RSNs, you will need to upgrade to DIRECTV STREAM’s Choice Plan ($99.99), which will give you your local RSN in almost every market.

In most cases, if Fubo carries your local RSN, it will be cheaper than DIRECTV STREAM, since the service only costs $75. However, they do charge an additional $8-12 RSN Fee (varies by market), so your overall cost will be close to $85 a month.

If you are looking to save, you could pair Sling TV, which starts at $40 a month with local streaming service like Bally Sports+ ($19.99 a month). With the two services combined, it would cost you about $60 a month to get Sling channels and your local Bally Sports RSN.

Best Live Sports Streaming Service 2024

Directv stream – best for regional sports, total number of sports channels.

Depending on your tier, you can get up to 21 Major Sports Channels with DIRECTV STREAM. You will also get live sports on local channels and your regional sports network.

Number of sports channels by channel type

  • Top Sports: Includes 7 Channels on all tiers.
  • Pro Sports: Includes 4 Channels depending on your tier.
  • Regional Sports: Includes Bally Sports RSNs, YES Network, NBC Sports RSNs, AT&T SportsNet RSNs, ROOT Sports, Altitude, MASN, and Spectrum SportsNet in various regions.
  • College Sports: Includes 6 Channels depending on your tier.

Pros & Cons

  • Pro: Has the widest coverage of regional sports of any Live TV Streaming Service
  • Pro: Includes an Unlimited DVR and Unlimited At-Home Streams
  • Con: Pricer than Other Services, Requires $89.99 Choice Tier for Regional Sports
  • Con: Does Not Offer 4K of Any Live Sports

Known for having some of the best video quality of the live streaming services. While they don’t offer 4K, they offer 1080p where available. They have some nice features for sports fans, like the ability to record every team’s games and see sports scores directly from the app .

Sling TV – Best for Sports Streaming on a Budget

At just $40 a month, there is no cheaper option to get live sports like ESPN, which is on their Sling Orange Plan. If you need FS1, USA Network, or NFL Network, you will need their Sling Blue Plan. On both plans, you will get TBS and TNT.

With Sling Orange 4 Major Sports Channels, while you’ll get 6 Major Sports Channels with Sling Blue. You can add up to 16 Additional Channels with their Sports Extra add-on.

  • Top Sports: Includes up to 6 Channels across plans.
  • Pro Sports: Includes up to 4 Channels, which besides NFL Network are in their Sports Extra add-on.
  • Regional Sports: Sling TV does not include any Regional Sports.
  • College Sports: Includes up to 7 Channels, all of which are in their Sports Extra add-on.
  • Pro: The least expensive option to get major sports on channels like ESPN, TNT, TBS, and USA Network.
  • Pro: Can Add NFL RedZone as part of their $11 Sports Extra Pack
  • Con: Does not include any Regional Sports.
  • Con: Only includes 50 Hour DVR (can upgrade to 200 Hours for $5).

While Sling TV will help you save money to stream live sports, you won’t have to sacrifice on streaming major sports channels. Sling TV also offers special channels for those looking to track scores, odds, and sports betting lines. They also now let you track live scores and quickly jump to games inside the Sling app.

Fubo – Best For Saving on Regional Sports

You will get 19 Major Sports Channels with Fubo, some which will require their Sports Plus Add-On. You will also get live sports on local channels and regional sports networks.

  • Top Sports: Includes 5 Channels
  • Pro Sports: Includes up to 5 Channels
  • Regional Sports: Includes Bally Sports RSNs, MSG, NESN, NBC Sports RSNs, AT&T SportsNet RSNs, ROOT Sports, and Altitude.
  • College Sports: Includes up to 6 Channels
  • Pro: Has least expensive coverage of regional sports of any Live TV Streaming Service
  • Pro: Includes 4K coverage as part of their Elite Plan
  • Pro: Offers Multi-Screen Option to watch four games at a time
  • Con: Does not offer TNT and TBS, meaning you will miss some NBA, NHL, and MLB playoff games
  • Con: Most markets have a Regional Sports Fee, which will add $8-12 to your bill

Most people know Fubo as a service designed for sports fans. While they are missing TNT and TBS, they have a lot of the hard-to-get RSNs from Bally Sports, MSG, NESN, AT&T SportsNet, Altitude, and ROOT Sports. They have added features that sports fans will love like MultiView , which lets you watch four games at once, and FanView , which lets you track live stats and scores.

Hulu + Live TV – Best For National Sports

With Hulu + Live TV, you will get 18 Major Sports Channels. You will also get access to ESPN+ at no extra charge and choose to add additional channels, like NFL RedZone, with their Sports Plus Add-On ($10).

  • Pro Sports: Includes up to 3 Channels depending on your tier. You can add NFL RedZone with their Sports Plus Add-on.
  • Regional Sports: Only includes NBC Sports RSNs. Dropped Bally Sports RSNs and YES Network in 2020.
  • College Sports: Includes up to 7 Channels depending on your tier.
  • Pro: Has all top sports cable channels and includes ESPN+ at no extra charge
  • Pro: Includes an Unlimited DVR to record all of your team’s games
  • Con: Does not offer Regional Sports Networks in most markets
  • Con: Does not offer any 4K sports coverage

With Hulu + Live TV, you won’t have to sacrifice any major sports channels, except Regional Sports Networks. They let you favorite sports teams to make finding games easy from the interface. One of the best features of Hulu + Live TV though is that it includes an Unlimited DVR and The Disney Bundle at no extra charge. With The Disney Bundle, you will be able to watch all live events exclusive to ESPN+ as part of your Hulu Live TV subscription.

YouTube TV – Best Interface For Sports

You can get 18 Major Sports Channels with YouTube TV. If you want more live sports, they have channels like NFL RedZone and beIn Sports in their Sports Plus Add-on ($11).

  • Pro Sports: Includes 3 Channels depending on your tier.
  • Pro: Has all major nationally televised sports
  • Pro: Includes an Unlimited DVR, with easy way to watch “Key Plays” during a game
  • Con: Does not offer Regional Sports Network in most markets
  • Con: Offers select 4K games, but it’s bundled in their expensive $19.99 4K Plus Add-on.

YouTube TV has designed their interface with the sports fan in mind. On top of the Unlimited DVR, when you record a game, you can quickly skip to the most important action with their “Key Plays” feature. You also can also automatically record every game of your favorite team, and track scores and stats from the YouTube TV App.

While they are one of the few services that offer select games in 4K , you need to add their expensive $19.99 a month 4K Plus Add-on to access them.

The best live sports streaming service for you

If you want to see the best streaming service based on the teams you follow, you can use The Streamable's Matchmaker . It’s simple, just pick the teams or channels you want to watch and we will make a recommendation for you.

Get all your sports channels with sports streaming services

Depending on the TV streaming service you choose, you will get different channels as part of the package. On nearly all services, they include top national sports cable channels like ESPN, FS1, USA Network, TNT, and TBS on their base tier.

If you need games on Regional Sports Networks, you have to be more selective because not all services offer them. If you want to watch nationally televised games on league channels like NFL Network, NBA TV, MLB Network, and NHL Network, their availability vary based on service and tier.

Same goes for college sports channels like Big Ten Network, SEC Network, ACC Network, Longhorn Network, and Pac-12 Networks. While you have multiple options to stream them, you may need an add-on package to watch those games.

Cable Channels: Live streaming national sports broadcasts

Hulu Live TV , DIRECTV STREAM and YouTube TV each include ESPN, FS1, TNT, TBS, & USA Network.

These are the most important cable channels to offer live sports. They carry national broadcasts by the NFL , NBA , MLB , NHL , College Football , College Basketball , and PGA Tour .

Fubo does not include TNT or TBS, while Sling requires you to upgrade to Sling Orange + Blue ($50) to get all of those channels.

Regional Sports Networks: stream your local sports teams

Most regular season NBA, MLB, and NHL telecasts will air on your local Regional Sports Network (RSN). If you follow your hometown team, more than 80% of their games will air on your local RSN.

To watch your RSN online without cable, you will need a subscription to one of the major Live TV Streaming Services .

Once you subscribe, you will be able to stream nearly all your local sports games on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, Fire TV, Chromecast, iOS, and Android.

Regional Sports Networks are included in DIRECTV STREAM “Choice” ($108.99), Fubo ($91.99+), Hulu Live TV ($76.99), and YouTube TV ($72.99).

Almost 85% of all U.S.-based NBA, MLB, and NHL teams can be streamed locally on their RSN using a live streaming service.

Some RSNs are only available on certain streaming services

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just picking a service. Some RSNs are more exclusive than others.

If you want to ensure that you’ll get your RSNs, DIRECTV STREAM and Fubo are the only services that carry RSNs in most markets, since they carry Bally Sports, NBC Sports, AT&T SportsNet, and regional channels like MSG, NESN, Marquee Sports Network, and Altitude.

However, DIRECTV STREAM ($108.99) is the only one that carries YES Network , Spectrum SportsNet , and MASN . Hulu and YouTube TV carry NBC Sports RSNs, while Sling TV no longer carries RSNs at all.

Depending on your market, some options are better than others.

For instance, in the New York market — MSG and MSG+ are only available on Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM , while YES Network is only carried by DIRECTV STREAM .

In Los Angeles, Bally Sports West and Bally Sports SoCal are only on Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM , while Spectrum SportsNet and Spectrum SportsNet LA are only on DIRECTV STREAM ,

Additionally, Altitude and MASN are only available on DIRECTV STREAM .

In Boston, NESN is only available on Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM . AT&T SportsNet Southwest , [AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh], AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain , and ROOT Sports Northwest are also only available on DIRECTV STREAM and Fubo .

NBC Sports RSNs like NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Sports Philadelphia, and NBC Sports Washington are available on most of the streaming services, except Sling TV .

If you are looking for just Bally Sports RSNs, Bally Sports+ ($19.99) may be an option for some sports fans, but that service only covers 16 NBA teams, 12 NHL teams, and 5 MLB teams.

Overflow Channels

Only some services carry the overflow channel like NBC Sports Washington+ or a regional Bally Sports channel like Bally Sports Kansas City. If an overflow channel isn’t available in your streaming service you may be able to watch the game in Fox Sports Go or NBC Sports App. For example, most providers don’t offer Bally Sports Kansas City, but those who live in Kansas City may be able to use their credentials to watch in the Bally Sports App.

Local Channels: Watch local sports without cable

Local networks are important for sports fans. They air almost every NFL game and some NBA (ABC), NHL (ABC), and MLB (FOX) games. The networks also generally air the most rounds of the playoffs for every professional sports league.

For college sports fans, many college basketball and football games will air on your local CBS, FOX, and ABC affiliate.

For PGA Tour fans, most final rounds of the tournaments will air exclusively on your local CBS or NBC affiliate.

Every Live TV Streaming Service includes local channels in their entry-level package, but not all local channels are available in every market.

Fortunately, at least one streaming service includes the main CBS or FOX affiliate in the local market of every NFL team.

You can see which locals are available in your area by using our Channel Finder .

Pro Sports Channels: Watch more of your favorite sports

Pro Sports channels like NFL Network , NBA TV , MLB Network , and NHL Network are great for those who like to watch highlights, analysis, and out-of-market games of their favorite league.

Fubo ($91.99) is the only service that offers local channels, RSNs, NFL Network , NBA TV , NHL Network , MLB Network , and NFL RedZone .

One of the least expensive options, Sling’s Sports Extra ($10) add-on, which includes NFL RedZone , NBA TV , MLB Network , and NHL Network . You can add this to Sling Orange or Blue ($40+), which will either give you ESPN or USA/FS1.

Fubo , Hulu Live TV , YouTube TV , and Sling TV each offer NFL Network and NFL RedZone.

College Sports Channels: Stream big college games

While most major college football and basketball games will air on network television, some smaller conference and games will air on specialty college and conference channels.

The major college sports networks are Big Ten Network , CBS Sports Network , ESPNU , Longhorn Network , Pac-12 Network , and SEC Network .

There are many good options for college sports fans. Hulu Live TV ($76.99) and YouTube TV ($72.99) each offer Big Ten Network , ACC Network , SEC Network , CBS Sports Network , and ESPNU .

If you want to watch Pac-12 Network , you will have to subscribe to either Fubo or Sling TV .

Other Sports Channels

Fubo has one of the strongest packages for soccer, golf, and international sports.

With Fubo , they include beIn Sports , Golf Channel , Eleven Sports , and the cheapest upgrade to Fox Soccer Plus ($6).

If you’re looking for PGA Tour coverage, DIRECTV STREAM , Fubo , Hulu Live TV , Sling TV , and YouTube TV each offer Golf Channel in their plan.

More cable alternatives for streaming sports

In some cases, sports are now only available on specific streaming services.

Platforms for streaming exclusive sports

ESPN+ has added a ton of exclusive content for sports fans. For NHL fans, you can watch 75+ exclusive NHL games, along with more than 1,050 out-of-market NHL games. For NFL fans, they simulcast select Monday Night Football games, and have an annual exclusive game on the service.

The service is ideal for international soccer fans since they are the only way to watch Bundesliga and LaLiga matches. If you’re into combat sports, you will need ESPN+ to watch every UFC Fight Night and UFC PPV.

English Premier League can only be found on Peacock . They are also the home to WWE Network, including all PPV events, as well as Olympic coverage.

Paramount+ is one of the best options for inexpensive live sports. They include all NFL on CBS games in your local market as part of their Essential Plan. You can also watch College Football and PGA Tour Golf, if you upgrade to their Premium Plan, which includes your local CBS affiliate.

For soccer fans, they include live Champions League and Serie A games on all of their plans.

Apple TV+ is home to several exclusive MLB games and will become the exclusive home to MLS games in 2023.

Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video is the only way to watch Thursday Night Football games.

Out-of-Market Sports Subscriptions

Live TV Streaming Services are the right option for those who live in the same market as their favorite team. For those who have moved away, you will need to subscribe to an out-of-market streaming plan.

Each league offers a different service which will give you access to almost every game that is not broadcast nationally. Some of the services offer the option to purchase a package that includes every team or a single team at a discount.

FAQs on watching sports live without cable

What are sports streaming services.

There are different types of sports streaming services. What most people are looking for are cable alternatives that will give them the same live sports when they had a cable subscription. For those people, there are five options like DIRECTV STREAM , Hulu Live TV , Fubo , Sling TV , and YouTube TV . These services will carry channels like ESPN, FS1, TNT, TBS, and USA Network, along with in some cases local channels and Regional Sports Networks.

There are also sports streaming services that offer select exclusive coverage of sports leagues. For instance, ESPN+ carries NHL games, LaLiga, and Bundesliga, Prime Video carries Thursday Night Football, Peacock carries Premier League, Paramount+ has NFL on CBS, Champions League, & Serie A.

If you live away from your favorite team, you may be looking for an out-of-market package. For NFL fans, you can watch out-of-market games with NFL Sunday Ticket. For NBA fans, you can watch NBA League Pass. For MLB fans away from their favorite team, out-of-market games are on MLB.TV. For NHL fans, you can watch out-of-market hockey games with NHL Power Play, which is included with ESPN+.

Can I stream sports in 4K without cable or satellite?

While as of 2024, there still are a limited amount of games broadcast in 4K, they are available without a cable or satellite subscription.

Fubo and YouTube TV have the widest coverage of 4K sports. Fubo includes it in the Elite Plan, while YouTube TV requires their 4K Plus Add-On ($19.99). Each service offers select College Football, College Basketball, and Premier League games. YouTube TV also offers some additional coverage of college sports on ESPN, as well as select games on MLB Network and YouTube TV.

Fubo offers 4K coverage of home games on NESN and NBC Sports Chicago, if they carry those channels in your market.

Which device is best for streaming live sports: Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire Stick, or Roku?

If you are a sports fan, the most powerful streaming device is the Apple TV. For those who have one, if you subscribe to Fubo, you can watch up to four games at the same time using their Multi-View feature.

Outside of the interface, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Android TV devices are all more than powerful enough to stream live sports. If you get a higher-end device, you will likely experience less buffering.

If you are planning to stream live sports in 4K, make sure you choose a streaming stick that supports 4K like Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick 4K or Fire Stick Max, Roku Streaming Stick 4K or Express 4K, or Chromecast with Google TV.

Can I watch live sports on my Smart TV without cable?

Just like a streaming stick, you can also watch live sports on your Smart TV without cable. Most Smart TV platforms support the major TV Streaming Services , along with apps to stream out-of-market games. Whether you want to stream on LG Smart TV, Samsung Smart TV, Sony Smart TV, or VIZIO Smart TVs – you generally can watch all the action.

You can check out our streaming device page to see if the sports app you want to stream is supported by your Smart TV.

Is there a lag or delay when streaming sports live compared with cable?

One of the biggest downsides to streaming live sports is that there is usually a delay versus watching on cable or an antenna. On most Live TV Streaming Services , you will likely be 20-30 seconds delayed compared to cable.

While it has reduced from 60 seconds down to 20 seconds over the last few years, expect that if you follow along on Twitter or are texting with friends, that the action might be spoiled. We suggest turning “Do Not Disturb” on your phone during the game.

Since we’ve seen improvements in stream delay, also known as latency, we expect over the next few seasons that it will get better.

Can I cancel my subscriptions when the season is over?

One of the best features of TV streaming services is that they are month-to-month with no contracts. That means you can turn them on and off as you please, and you don’t need to pay with your teams are not playing.

On top of that, you can also add-on packages that you only keep for part of the year. Many people do this with NFL RedZone , which is included in the Sports Add-on of most Live TV Streaming Services . When the NFL season is over, you can just turn it off until the following season.

How can I find what services carry my sports team?

You can use The Streamable’s Matchmaker to find the best streaming options to watch your favorite sports team or sports channels. It’s simple, just search for your team or channel, add your Zip Code, and we’ll show you the best options.

The pros and cons of travel sports

Travel teams can be fulfilling and help you or your child develop. but is it worth the costs and effort.

travel live sport

By Alyssa Bradford

Travel sports can be great for children or youth to learn life lessons, exercise and make friendships. However, being a part of the team is also costly and time consuming.

So should you or your child play a travel sport? It depends on what you and your family are looking for. As a general suggestion, have a sincere discussion about expectations and what sacrifices the family will need to make.

For specific information and data for the pros and cons of travel sports, see below.

What is a travel sport?

A travel sports team features elite youth athletes who compete and travel extensively for games, competitions or tournaments. They are associated with private or club sport programs, distinct from recreational or school leagues, per Verywell Family .

There are multiple sports that offer travel teams to families and youth. Here are some of the most popular, according to Groundwork :

  • Basketball.
  • Field hockey.
  • Gymnastics.
  • Ice hockey.
  • Volleyball.
  • Water polo.

The pros of travel sports including improvement of skills, friendships, daily activity, life lessons and traveling.

Takes skills to next level

Travel sports offer higher-level competition, providing a pathway from recreational leagues to varsity teams. This can make it tempting for athletes wanting to get onto high school or college teams, per Rocky Top Sports World .

Builds friendships

The extensive time spent with teammates during practices, games and tournaments fosters friendships and create memories. This bond is particularly beneficial for reserved or shy children, helping them to feel belonging and grow in social skills, according to Rocky Top .

Daily activity

For those ages 5 to 17, 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activities should be completed throughout a day. This helps strengthen hearts, muscles and bones, per the World Health Organization .

According to The Everymom , travel sports allow for frequent activity and exercise for children and youth to stay healthy. Plus, it is usually more enjoyable than going to the gym.

Learning lessons

The Everymom also shares valuable lessons that one can learn from travel sports:

  • Perseverance.
  • Committing to promises.
  • Knowing how to work as a team.
  • Standing up for yourself.
  • Working on and succeeding in goals.

According to Rocky Top Sports World , athletes on travel teams get to explore new locations and compete against opponents from other regions, states and sometimes countries. Families often seize this opportunity to turn sports travel into a vacation by aligning it with tournaments or events.

Cons of travel sports include costs, time spent, burnout, risk of injury and possible conflict with religion.

Expensive costs

The costs of travel sports might change depending on what sport you play, the team and where you live.

Looking at the 15 most popular travel sports above, Groundwork also shares the average costs per spot on the team.

  • Baseball: $1,894.
  • Basketball: $822.
  • Cheer: $2,307.
  • Dance: $2,099.
  • Field hockey: $1,186.
  • Football: $349.
  • Gymnastics: $2,778.
  • Ice hockey: $2,529.
  • Lacrosse: $1,352.
  • Rugby: $281.
  • Soccer: $1,535.
  • Softball: $1,258.
  • Swimming: $1,325.
  • Volleyball: $3,159.
  • Water polo: $1,439.

According to Groundwork , these fees do not include travel, equipment, clothing and other expenses. “Parents can end up spending $10,000 annually for their child to participate at this level.”

It’s time consuming

Children’s sports activities can dominate schedules, with parents and children traveling extensively to attend games and tournaments, per Character Development and Leadership .

According to The Everymom , as a child, the author’s typical life while playing travel sports included three to five nights of long practices per week and two to three days for an away tournament almost every weekend.

As she grew older, the author found less time for hobbies or socializing with friends, as schoolwork demanded more of her free time, per The Everymom .

Burnout is possible

Burnout entails both mental and physical exhaustion, resulting in loss of interest in meaningful activities, according to Darling Downs Health .

With travel sports, burnout can be possible because of the constant time and energy dedicated.

Zipdo has important statistics related to burnout and sports:

  • Seventy percent of U.S. kids quit organized sports at age 13 due to burnout.
  • Boys are more likely to drop out (36%) than girls (31%) due to burnout.
  • Three out of four athletes have faced moderate to severe burnout.
  • U.S. youth athletes practicing over three consecutive hours are 125% more prone to burnout.
  • Over 45% of specialized youth athletes quit due to burnout.
  • Burnout in children playing travel sports surged by 50% in 2017.
  • Athletes training over 16 hours weekly with inadequate sleep face a 70% higher risk of burnout.

Greater risk of injury

According to Sadler Sports , more than 3.5 million youth sports injuries require medical treatment each year. Engaging in youth travel sports, as a lot of time is dedicated to the sport, can elevate the risk of overuse injuries.

Due to playing consistently, athletes can also sustain injuries that last throughout their lives, such as knee or head injuries, per The Everymom .

May conflict with religion

Depending on how you and your family worship, check to see if what is expected or required makes you feel comfortable. Here are some ways religion may conflict with sports, per Case IQ .

  • Required tournaments often play on Saturdays and Sundays. Question if one or both of those days are sacred.
  • Some religions might not be allowed to mix with the opposite gender. Besides teammates, travel sports include meeting with coaches and staff.
  • Is the sport uniform okay? Does it allow you to wear religious coverings? Is the uniform too revealing or does it showcase sponsors that you do not believe in?
  • Does the team or coach accommodate as necessary for religious practices, such as easier practice when fasting or a quiet area for religious observation?

Should you or your child play a travel sport?

According to Verywell Family , before committing to a team, have an open discussion with your family about the sacrifices involved and whether you are prepared to make them. Here are some general questions to ask, besides looking at the pros and cons above:

  • Are you familiar with the coach or coaches and do they offer the right environment for you or your child?
  • Are you or your child a good team player?
  • Are you or your child passionate and dedicated about the sport?
  • How much can the family financially spend? How much does the travel team cost?
  • How much time can you or your family give away? Can you or your children continue to complete school or family assignments?

If you, your child or your family feel comfortable with the answers given above, go for it! While people may continue to do travel sports throughout their youth, it does not mean someone can’t stop if wanted.

Want to get onto a travel sports team?

If the team requires tryouts, it can be scary for you or your child.

Before the tryouts look at some of these tips from the Thunder Soccer Club , perfect for all sports:

  • Think positively and be confident.
  • Put things in perspective. If you make the team, great; if not, that’s okay. What will you do for training next time if you don’t make it yet?
  • Meditate, pray, take deep breaths and do what is necessary to calm down.
  • Eat a light meal with carbohydrates before tryouts to get energy.
  • Drink plenty of water weeks before tryouts begin. Hydration will help in performance.
  • Get to the tryouts early.
  • Bring all of the equipment you need. Consider packing beforehand so you don’t forget.

Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea: Blues denied late winner by VAR after second-half fightback

Chelsea fought back to hold Aston Villa to a 2-2 draw with a stirring second-half performance on Saturday night, but were denied a late winner by VAR.

A brilliant second-half strike by Conor Gallagher saw the Blues comeback from two goals down to threaten Villa's Champions League hopes.

Villa are fourth on 67 points, seven ahead of Tottenham, who play title-chasing Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday as one of their three games in hand over Villa. Chelsea are ninth on 48 points.

Thrashed 5-0 by Arsenal in midweek, Chelsea got off to the worst possible start when Villa midfielder John McGinn's shot was scuffed into his own net by Marc Cucurella in the fourth minute and Morgan Rogers added a second goal for the home side just before the break.

Villa were forced to replace keeper Emi Martinez with Robin Olsen at the break due to a hamstring injury, but the Swede was powerless to stop Noni Madueke from pulling back a goal in the 63rd minute and Gallagher's stunning 81st-minute equaliser before Chelsea had what looked to be a late winner ruled out after a VAR review.

NASCAR at Dover race 2024: Start time, TV, live stream, lineup for Würth 400

travel live sport

NASCAR drivers face the Monster Mile this weekend as the Cup Series speeds into Dover Motor Speedway .

This will be the only race this season at Dover, but it does feature the return of the track’s all-time wins leader: Jimmy Johnson . The seven-time Cup Series champion and now Legacy Motor Club co-owner will pilot the No. 84 Toyota for his team at an oval where he has won 11 times – four more than the next closest driver.

But Legacy Motor Club will be without full-time driver Erik Jones after he was diagnosed with a compression fracture in his lower back following a crash last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. Corey Heim, the team's reserve driver, will substitute for Jones in the No. 43 Toyota.

Sunday’s race, however, could come down to another battle between Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing, who have combined to win eight of the 10 races held so far this season . The two teams have dominated the Monster Mile for the past decade. Since the 2013 fall race at Dover, Hendrick or Gibbs drivers have won 14 of 18 Cup Series races held at the Delaware track.

Who will celebrate with Miles the Monster on Sunday? Here is all the information you need to get ready for the Würth 400:

What time does the Cup race at Dover start?

The Würth 400 starts at 2 p.m. ET at Dover Motor Speedway in Dover, Delaware.

What TV channel is the Cup race at Dover on?

Will there be a live stream of the Cup race at Dover?

How many laps is the Cup race at Dover?

The Würth 400 is 400 laps around the 1-mile track for a total of 400 miles. The race will feature three segments (laps per stage) — Stage 1: 120 laps; Stage 2: 130 laps; Stage 3: 150 laps.

Who won the most recent race at Dover?

Martin Truex Jr. led 68 of the final 69 laps on May 1, 2023 and held off Ross Chastain by 0.505 seconds for his fourth career win at Dover – the most among active Cup Series drivers.

Here’s a recent NHL Playoffs AP story:

DALLAS (AP) — Jack Eichel and defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas got exactly what they anticipated, and withstood that early hard push in Game 2 by the desperate Dallas Stars.

The Golden Knights didn’t settle for a split while starting the first-round series on the road.

“We expected them to come out and push hard that first five, 10 minutes and they did,” Eichel said. “We responded. We were able to come in here after the first period and it’s all tied. ... They gave us all we could handle.”

Eichel assisted on the tying goal by Jonathan Marchessault late in the first period before adding an empty-netter late, Noah Hanifin scored the tiebreaker with unassisted goal late in the second period and the Knights won 3-1 on Wednesday night for a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3 is Saturday night in Las Vegas.

“We’re in a good spot, but there’s still a lot of hockey left to be played,” Hanifin said. “We’re happy to get back into our building and have that momentum on our side. ... Just got to keep doing what we’re doing, chipping away at it and play our game.”

Hanifin was one of the three trade-deadline acquisitions for the Knights, the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.

Marchessault’s second goal of the series was his franchise-record 36th in the postseason while appearing in all 90 of Vegas’ playoff games. Logan Thompson had 20 saves in his second career playoff start, though Dallas didn’t get a shot to him in the final 5:37 of the game.

In the Western Conference Final last May, the Knights were the top seed when winning the first three games against Dallas and eventually taking the series in six games.

After falling 4-3 in the opener of this first-round series , the Stars came out intent on setting a hard-hitting tone before the series shifted West.

Mason Marchment took defenseman Zach Whitecloud off his skates with a jarring hit behind the Vegas net only 2 1/2 minutes into the game. Knights captain Mark Stone ended up on the ice midway through the first period when it appeared that he was going to take a shot at Jason Robertson, who instead bowed up and delivered a body blow instead.

In the end, Dallas still couldn’t take down the Knights.

“Loved our first period. We make one mistake at the end of the first, probably deserved to be up. That was probably a critical point in the game,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “Eichel, the wrong guy gets behind us at the wrong time. And that’s what they do, they make you pay. So you come out of the first after playing a great period and you have nothing to show for it.”

Hanifin’s go-ahead goal with 1:07 left in the second period came after defenseman Esa Lindell blocked two shots in a row.

Robertson put Dallas up 1-0 with his second goal of the series, on a power play with 3:13 left in the first period. His 10th career playoff goal was his eighth against Vegas.

After Eichel’s shot went in the empty net late, Robertson broke his stick when he slammed it against the post.

The goal by Robertson came soon after Marchment whiffed at a loose puck that had popped off Thompson’s glove, and another scramble in front of the goalie when Roope Hintz was denied twice.

The Knights got even with 1:51 left in the first period on a charge when Eichel made a move that Jake Oettinger bit on. The goalie slipped down and Marchessault had an open side of the net after getting a nifty pass.

“We settled in eventually. You don’t want want 1-0 to turn into 2-0, so we did a good job with that,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Go into the intermission 1-1, we haven’t been our best, but we got through it.”

Oettinger had 23 saves, including a sequence in the second period when he knocked away three successive shots by Shea Theodore .

After his first shot was blocked, Theodore gathered the loose puck and tried a backhander on which Oettinger made a sprawling save, lunging to knock away the puck with his extended glove. The Knights defenseman got the puck again, skated around a couple of Stars and his third shot went off the goalie who was still laying on the ice at the edge of the crease.

That was during a 4-on-4 period after a scuffle in front of Oettinger when his teammate Ryan Suter threw Anthony Mantha down and both got roughing penalties.

Thomas had a couple of close-range saves right after that.

Parramatta Eels suffer second half collapse to Manly, as Maika Sivo sent to sin-bin for 'stupid' forearm

Sport Parramatta Eels suffer second half collapse to Manly, as Maika Sivo sent to sin-bin for 'stupid' forearm

A ref holding his hands in the air, sending a payer to the sin-bin, who looks upset

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has called Maika Sivo's forearm to the head of Manly's Reuben Garrick "dumb" as the Eels collapse for the second time in seven days.

The Eels gave up a half-time lead to lose 32-18, having two players sent to the sin-bin in the final 23 minutes.

Maikia Sivo, who scored a hat-trick at Brookvale Oval on Friday night, encapsulated the Eels capitulation when he was sin-binned for hitting Manly's Reuben Garrick with a forearm to the head.

Parramatta trailed by two points, despite scoring four tries to three at that stage, when Sivo hit a defenceless Garrick on the ground after the Eels winger had made a tackle.

Poetically, Garrick scored twice in the next five minutes for Manly, where Sivo should have been defending.

"One of the most egregious things I have ever seen," former Manly player John Gibbs told ABC Sport in relation to Sivo's forearm.

Eels captain Clint Gutherson and coach Brad Arthur were clearly frustrated by the second half collapse when they fronted their post-match press conference.

Arthur called Sivo's forearm "dumb" while Gutherson lamented the action, especially after Parramatta had just returned to 13 men following Will Penisini's return from a previous sin-bin.

"Just stupid. We were right in the game, 10 minutes left, we just got Will back on," Gutherson said.

"Just silly things at the moment which are hurting us. Just missed tackles, penalties against us. Can't do that in NRL games, doesn't matter who you're versing."

The Eels held a 14-6 lead at half-time, scoring three tries in the opening 40 minutes.

Manly's Haumole Olakau'atu was put on report and sent to the sin-bin, the first of three made by referee Gerard Sutton, for a lifting tackle on Parramatta's Shaun Lane in the fifth minute.

NRL ref holds his hands in the air, sending a player to the sin bin

Sivo had two tries in the first half, becoming the first opposition player to score a double in three consecutive matches at Brookvale Oval.

Tries to Tom Trbojevic and Daly Cherry-Evans in the opening 10 minutes of the second half gave Manly their first lead of the night.

Will Penisini was sin-binned in the 57th minute for tackling Trbojevic without the ball, denying what could have been a try-scoring opportunity.

But Sivo's third try, while Parramatta was down to 12 men, breathed new life into the Eels who trailed 20-18 with 13 minutes to play.

Sivo's forearm to Garrick then ended the Eels charge as they fell away in the final 10 minutes.

While the attention rested with Sivo post-game, the Eels had already given up their half-time lead.

Their second half was littered with errors and penalties, while Gutherson and Dylan Brown combined to successfully kick just one of five shots for goal.

"We're just having lapses in concentration," Parramatta's J'maine Hopgood told ABC Sport.

"It's one play in one set, it's having a ripple effect and it's killing us at the moment."

Parramatta has the bye next week, while Manly stays at home for a Friday night clash with the Canberra Raiders.

That is all from us tonight

What an evening of NRL.

This game was fabulous for the neutral.

A close contest, plenty of drama and A LOT of talking points coming out of it.

We will be back tomorrow for two more matches this Anzac Round in the NRL.

Daly Cherry-Evans makes a profound point on Anzac Round

We are giving the final word from Brookvale to Daly Cherry-Evans, who told this to ABC Sport.

"It’s a real privilege to play in Anzac week and to represent the Anzacs. "We don’t take that lightly and that part we definitely draw on, but there are very little similarities between war and sport, so we certainly don’t try and compare ourselves to anything war-related. "But we certainly do try and tap into the spirit that they showed as Anzacs."

J'maine Hopgood tells ABC Sport concentration is hurting the Eels

Parramatta forward   J'maine Hopgood has spoken with John Gibbs.

A clearly disappointed Hopgood told ABC Sport that the Eels' good work is being undone too regularly.

"We're just having lapses in concentration. It's one play in one set, it's having a ripple effect and it's killing us at the moment."

What do you say to Sivo?

Brad Arthur has been asked what he will say to Maika Sivo following the loss — and the sin-bin.

Arthur has a measured response for a coach who looks frustrated.

"There's no point in saying too much tonight on emotion, we'll just let it settle" he says.

"He doesn't need me to tell how silly it was.

"Because we put him back in the team, and he showed why we put him back in the team, because he scored a couple of tries that probably no-one in our squad can score."

Coach and captain are not happy with Maika Sivo

Brad Arthur was asked about Sivo's sin-bin.

"It's dumb, isn't it? It's 20-18, we're up four tries to three," he said.

Captain Clint Gutherson was not impressed either, especially since the Eels had just got Will   Penisini back on the field from his sin-bin.

"Just stupid. We were right in the game, 10 minutes left, we just got Will back on," he said.

Brad Arthur and Clint Gutherson are holding their post game press conference

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has said his team, like last week, need to play well for the whole 80 minutes.

"We've got to decide if it's full-time, everytime, with that effort," he said.

"If we keep doing that we'll fight our way out of it.

"I thought in the second half we probably beat ourselves."

Plenty of reaction after Sivo's sin-bin

Andrew Moore has seen more games of footy than the average fan.

"Maika Sivo who I love as a football player does some really dumb things. If I'm Brad Arthur, I'm nearly dropping him again."

Daly Cherry-Evans speaking with ABC Sport

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans has joined John Gibbs for ABC Sport.

"Definitely a weird game, but we'll take it," he said.

"We're certainly not playing the most clinical footy at the moment.

"We are there abouts, but we have some work to do."

FT: Manly overrun the Eels to win 32-18

Parramatta impoded again.

They were on top for a lot of that contest, but it all folded late.

As we said before the game, Manly find ways to win.

They found another way tonight.

78' NO TRY: Manly denied try by the Bunker

Manly thought they had a try, but Turbo was offside from a grubber kick.

It was a scrappy play, and among a few grubber kicks, Turbo was offside.

78' TRY: Manly are in again

75' try: garrick again scores where sivo should be.

Manly are going to win.

They are targeting Parramatta's left-edge, where Maika SIvo no longer is.

Daly Cherry-Evans throws a cut-out ball, picked up by Garrick, Parra's defence is at sixes-and-sevens and, and Garrick scores.

71' TRY: Manly scores through Reuben Garrick

It's almost poetic.

Reuben Garrick has scored where Maika Sivo should have been defending.

Eels' coach Brad Arthur must be fuming.

70' SIN BIN: Maika Sivo has been marched for a forearm to the head

Maika Sivo has been sent to the bin.

He tackles   Reuben Garrick. Fine tackle.

But then slams a forearm into his head — and he goes for it again.

He won't come back until 20 seconds to go.

"Blatantly dumb and blatantly deliberate," says caller Andrew Moore for ABC Sport.

"One of the most egregious things I have ever seen," says John Gibbs.

68': Gutherson sacks himself as goal kicker?

Gutherson has missed all conversions, so Dylan Brown takes this shot from the touchline.

Brown cannot kick the goal either.

Parramatta have scored 4 tries to 3 — but they trail by 2 points.

67' TRY: Sivo has three tries and Parramatta hit back

Maika Sivo has a hat-trick.

Oh no. We have gone to the Bunker.

Wait … the Bunker is going to uphold the try.

There was a high kick, followed by a collision between an Eels and a Sea Eagle (the Bunker clears the contact) Parra get the ball, flung it to the other side of the field.

Sivo scores!

63': A contentious call from the Bunker give Parramatta the ball

Jason Saab has been called for a knock-on from the Bunker, after the ball appeared to be knocked out by Parramatta's Maika Sivo.

The ref says Sivo knocked on, but the Eels challenge the play.

The Bunker thinks Sivo either hit Saab's hand or Saab knocked-on first.

Either way, premiership-winner Luke Lewis is not convinced.

"I don't know what a knock-on is anymore," Lewis tells ABC Sport.

59': Manly make it 20-14 with a penalty goal

After the sin bin,   Reuben Garrick kicks a penalty goal for Manly.

Pro-Palestinian protests continue at colleges across the US

By Dalia Faheid, Nouran Salahieh, Maureen Chowdhury and Antoinette Radford, CNN

Here are some of the latest comments from elected officials on the protests happening across the US

From CNN’s Avery Lotz

Several US lawmakers and other elected officials have spoken in media appearances Sunday about the protests seen across the country in response to Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell criticized what he said was antisemitic rhetoric seen in the protests, saying on CBS that "university presidents need to get control of the situation, allow free speech and push back against antisemitism."

“We’ve all got to get serious about the challenges ahead of us, engaging in antisemitic behavior in the United States needs to be stood up to by the administrators of these colleges,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin also condemned instances of antisemitic rhetoric, and said Virginia wouldn't allow protest encampments to be put up at its academic institutions.

“We will protect the ability to peacefully express yourself, but we’re not going to have the kinds of hate speech and intimidation that we’re seeing across the country in Virginia,” the governor told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, meanwhile, pushed back against House Speaker Mike Johnson’s suggestion that the National Guard could be sent to college campuses amid the protests, calling it a “very, very bad idea.”

“I think calling in the National Guard to college campuses for so many people would recall what happened when that was done during the Vietnam War — and it didn’t end well,” Kaine said on “Meet the Press.”

“There are other ways, using campus security, but also offering students more opportunities to have dialogue that is civil and constructive where people hear one another — that’s by far preferable,” he added.

Students in Gaza stage demonstration to express gratitude for pro-Palestinian protests at US colleges

From Tareq Alhelou in Rafah and CNN’s Kareem Khadder, Abeer Salman and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem

Dozens of Palestinian students staged a display of solidarity at a demonstration in southern Gaza on Sunday to express gratitude for the support seen on US college campuses in recent weeks.

Video from the Shaboura refugee camp in Rafah shows children holding banners with messages that read: "Students of Columbia University, continue to stand by us,” and “Violating our right to education and life is a war crime.”

The students gathered around makeshift tents near a school that now serves as a shelter for Palestinians displaced from northern Gaza. Footage shows people spray-painting messages of gratitude on the fabric of the tents, saying “Thank you, students in solidarity with Gaza. Your message has reached.”

Takfeer Abu-Yousuf, a displaced student from the northern city of Beit Hanoun, told CNN he felt it was necessary to thank the students in the US who “supported us with their humanity.”

“We can’t write these thank you messages on the walls of our homes because we have no homes. They have been destroyed on top of our children, elders and women,” he said.

Eighteen-year-old Rana Al-Taher pointed to the school in the camp, telling CNN that what should have been a place for learning and education has become a place for sheltering.

“That means that we have lost our education. We have lost our only hope in Gaza and we want it back. We’re here to ask for it back. It’s our right to have it back … that’s why we’re here,” she said.

Sanders says it's not antisemitic to hold Israeli government accountable for its actions in Gaza

Sen. Bernie Sanders speaks in Triangle, Virginia, on April 22.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders pushed back on  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim  that protests on US college campuses are driven by antisemitism, telling CNN’s Dan Bash that it’s critical to hold the Israeli government accountable for its actions in Gaza.

In the interview on Sunday morning, Sanders said the “vast majority of the American people are disgusted with Netanyahu’s war machine in Gaza” and do not want more aid sent to Israel.

While Sanders said he acknowledges “antisemitism exists and is growing in the United States,” he said it is not antisemitic for protesters to hold Netanyahu accountable for his actions in Gaza, which he says are “unprecedented in the modern history of warfare.”

Sanders said Israel's widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure in Gaza, and the death toll of more than 30,000 people , according to the enclave's health ministry, is the reason people want the Israeli government held accountable.

Sanders said he condemns Hamas, antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry, but emphasized again, “We do have to pay attention to the disastrous and unprecedented humanitarian disaster taking place in Gaza right now.”

Watch a clip from the interview below:

Universities are cracking down after months of student protests over Israel’s bombardment of Gaza

From CNN's Dakin Andone

With tension mounting over an encampment in support of Palestinians at  New York’s Columbia University , police strode onto campus this month and arrested more than 100 demonstrators.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at  New York and Yale  universities. At the  University of Texas at Austin , police in riot gear and on horseback moved to disperse a like-minded demonstration, while nearly 100 at the  University of Southern California  also got arrested. Then at  Emory University in Atlanta , law enforcement deployed pepper balls to break up a pro-Palestinian action, arresting 28, including several  professors . And at  Boston’s Emerson College , another 108 protesters were arrested, with four officers hurt.

While the latest run of arrests has commanded outsized attention, US colleges have been using law enforcement — along with academic suspensions and, for at least one school, expulsion — to try   to   rein in student demonstrations since  Hamas’ October attack on Israel  left more than 1,200 dead and dozens taken hostage. Israel’s devastating counterpunch in Gaza – with more than 34,000 Palestinians killed, according to its health ministry – has further fueled deeply held views of students and faculty on all sides.

Amid US students’ broad insistence their tactics are peaceful, administrators often have decried campus protests as disruptive, with some — including at  Indiana University,   George Washington University  and  California State Polytechnic  University’s Humboldt campus — employing school rules governing use of public spaces to threaten or enact discipline, or call for police backup.

Administrators lately have seemed quicker to levy consequences against campus demonstrators than they were six months ago, according to Zach Greenberg of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Read more about the crackdown here.

Vandalism reported at USC is "absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," university says

From CNN’s Paradise Afshar

People stand near a vandalized statue at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, on April 27.

The University of Southern California says campus property was vandalized Saturday "by individuals who are part of the group that has continued to illegally camp on our campus."

The Tommy Trojan statue and a fountain in Alumni Park were vandalized, the university said, without elaborating on the type of damage they sustained. University officials also did not state what led them to believe the perpetrators were among those taking part in encampment demonstrations.

Video footage from CNN affiliate  KABC  showed the words “Say No to Genocide” spray-painted on the base of the Tommy Trojan statue.

“Despite repeated warnings, this group has also continued to disrupt our campus operations and harass students and others, in violation of numerous university policies,” Joel Curran, senior vice president of communications, said in a statement.

"While the university fully supports freedom of expression, these acts of vandalism and harassment are absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Curran said.

University President Carol Folt has made attempts to meet with students, “but they have declined these offers,” Curran said.

“We are hoping for a more reasonable response Sunday before we are forced to take further action,” he said. “This area is needed for commencement set up early this week.”

Remember: Demonstrators at universities across the country have organized in protest of Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza , in many cases calling on the schools to disinvest from Israeli institutions and other entities they say benefit from the war.

A USC professor who has criticized the school's response to protests told CNN on Saturday that the university's decision to cancel its Muslim valedictorian's commencement speech , citing safety concerns, served as a catalyst for demonstrations at the Los Angeles campus.

This post has been updated with additional information about the protests at USC.

Dozens of police cars surround University of Southern California campus, video shows

KABC

Dozens of police cars lined the streets as a large group of officers swarmed the University of Southern California Saturday night, video from CNN affiliate KABC  shows.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a "tactical alert" Saturday amid the pro-Palestinian protest at USC,  CNN affiliate KCBS reported. No arrests had been reported as of early Sunday and it's unclear what prompted the move.

The university posted a message  on social media  Friday night that said the University Park campus will be temporarily closed due to a "disturbance."

USC has served as the backdrop of demonstrations tied to the school’s valedictorian speech cancellation and as part of the nationwide campus pro-Palestinian protests.

Arizona State University Police arrested 72 people, including 15 students, university says

Arizona State University Police arrested 72 people, 15 of whom are students, on Friday in connection to an encampment on campus, university officials said Saturday.

“ASU Police arrested 72 people for trespassing after they set up an unauthorized encampment Friday, in violation of university policy,” the university said in a  media release.  “Encampments are prohibited on Arizona State University property. Lawful demonstrations can take place except overnight between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m."

Of the 72 people arrested and charged with criminal trespass, "about 80 percent of those arrested were not students," the release said.

“A group of people – most of whom were not ASU students, faculty or staff – created an encampment and demonstration that continued until well past 11 p.m. when the group was instructed repeatedly to disperse,” the media release said. “Individuals who refused to leave after numerous warnings were arrested and charged with criminal trespass.”

“While the university will continue to be an environment that embraces freedom of speech, ASU’s first priority is to create a safe and secure environment that supports teaching and learning,” the university said in the release.

How are universities cracking down on a swell of tension months into pro-Palestinian protests?

Members of law enforcement and police officers intervene during a pro-Palestinian student protest at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, on April 24.

With tension mounting over an encampment in support of Palestinians at New York’s Columbia University, police strode onto campus this month and arrested more than 100 demonstrators.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at  New York University and Yale University . At the  University of Texas at Austin , police in riot gear and on horseback moved to disperse a like-minded demonstration, while nearly 100 at the  University of Southern California  also got arrested. Then at  Emory University in Atlanta, law enforcement deployed pepper balls to break up a pro-Palestinian action, arresting 28, including several professors. And at Boston’s Emerson College , another 108 protesters were arrested, with four officers hurt.

On the cusp of the close of the academic year, university communities across the nation remain on edge, not only over flares of political action but also what response, if any, it might compel.

While the latest run of arrests has commanded outsized attention, US colleges have been using law enforcement – along with academic suspensions and, for at least one school, expulsion – to try   to   bring to heel student demonstrations since Hamas’ October attack on Israel left more than 1,200 dead and dozens taken hostage. Israel’s devastating counterpunch in Gaza – with more than 34,000 Palestinians killed, according to its health ministry – has further fueled deeply held views of students and faculty on all sides.

Amid US students’ broad insistence their tactics are peaceful, administrators often have decried campus protests as disruptive, with some – including at  Indiana University ,  George Washington University  and  California State Polytechnic   University ’s Humboldt campus – employing school rules governing use of public spaces to threaten or enact discipline or call for police backup.

Implicit in the crackdowns is a built-in tension of higher education: balancing the role of campuses as bastions of free speech while ensuring the safety of students, including those who are Jewish and have expressed  concern for their well-being  in the face of antisemitism that’s surged nationally since October 7 and has occasionally been seen at or near – or  conflated with  – pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations.

Administrators lately have seemed quicker to levy consequences against campus demonstrators than they were six months ago, according to Zach Greenberg of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

But, he said, calling in police carries risk.

It is a “drastic action” that “should be reserved for only the most direct and severe threats to campus safety,” Greenberg said. Further, doing so threatens to “erode” the trust between universities and students, who may see “police officers in riot gear arresting their classmates, maybe their professors.”

More than 80 arrested in Washington University demonstration, university says

More than 80 people were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday amid ongoing Pro-Palestinian demonstrations, the university  said in a statement.

A group of demonstrators, which included students, employees and individuals not associated with the university, marched at multiple locations on campus where they “pitched tents, and indicated that they did not intend to leave,” the university said.

“It quickly became clear through the words and actions of this group that they did not have good intentions on our campus and that this demonstration had the potential to get out of control and become dangerous,” the university said.

“When the group began to set up a camp in violation of university policy, we made the decision to tell everyone present that they needed to leave,” the statement said. Dozens were arrested after they "refused to leave after being asked multiple times."

“All will face charges of trespassing and some may also be charged with resisting arrest and assault, including for injuries to police officers,” the university said. “We are firmly committed to free expression and allow ample opportunity for voices to be heard on our campus. However, we expect everyone to respect our policies and we will take swift action to enforce them to their fullest extent.”

Presidential candidate Jill Stein was among those arrested Saturday at the university, her campaign's communications director previously said, adding that “we are not aware of any charges at this time.”
