Before you go

Check the info below before you head off on your holidays. This will help you get your phone ready for your trip, and prevent any nasty surprises when you get home.

Travelling in our Europe Zone

If you’re travelling within our Europe Zone , your data, minutes and texts allowances will work just like they do in the UK. That includes calls you make and receive within our Europe Zone and back to the UK, texts you send within our Europe Zone and back to the UK, and any data you use in our Europe Zone. See the list of destinations included .

What's included?

• Making calls and sending texts within our Europe Zone (excluding the UK), to any other country in our Europe Zone (including the UK).
• Receiving calls and texts in our Europe Zone.
• Using your monthly data allowance whilst in our Europe Zone.

Not included:

• Making calls or sending texts from the UK, to countries outside of the UK.
• Making calls or sending texts to premium rate numbers, directory service numbers and some non-geographic numbers (which can vary over time).  Find out more
• Mobile broadband tariffs, as they can only be used in the UK.
• Using mobile data if you’re on a cruise ship, however you will still be able to connect to the ship’s wifi. You’ll be able to make and receive calls for £3 a minute, and send texts for 65p a text.

Travelling outside of our Europe Zone

Going outside our Europe Zone? Good news. O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt-on is now included with selected O2 Refresh tariffs over 90GB and SIM only tariffs over 100GB You can also select the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt-on as your Extra if your O2 Refresh tariff is between 30GB and 89GB. You get a daily allowance of 120 calls, 120 minutes and data roaming in 27 additional destinations (our Inclusive Zone) including USA, Australia and New Zealand.

If you’re not eligible for the Inclusive Zone Bolt On, there’s our O2 Travel Bolt On, which keeps you connected in Turkey and other selected destinations, for just £4.99 a day. It lets you use the internet, talk for longer and text while you're away in selected destinations worldwide. No need to worry about overspending.

If you have a Spend Cap, the price of this Bolt On will not be included within your Spend Cap.

• All the data you need, 120 minutes and 120 texts, every day you use O2 Travel. Your allowance resets every day at midnight local time, and your leftover minutes and texts won’t be carried over.
• Any texts you receive.

What's not included?

• Extra usage. If you go over your minutes and texts allowance, you’ll be charged for any additional usage, at the standard roaming rate of the country you’re in.
• Premium rate numbers, MMS and non-standard texts. These will be billed at standard rates.
• Calls from the UK to O2 Travel destinations.

Free O2 Travel in our Inclusive Zone is available for our eligible O2 Refresh tariffs 90GB and above, as well as SIM only tariffs 100GB and above. Not available on 30 Day SIM only tariffs.

At first you may see unexpected roaming charges in your My O2 account.  Don’t worry, as long as you’re within your allowance, these charges will correct themselves within three hours and won’t appear on your bill. You’ll still see roaming charges for usage that isn’t included in your allowance, like calls to premium rate numbers. These will appear both in My O2 and on your bill.

If you bought a 10GB 12 month sim only tariff, on or after 3 May 2018, you’ll be eligible for O2 Travel in our Inclusive Zone, when you move to a £20 or above 12 month sim only tariff.

If you joined on any other sim only tariff, you won’t be eligible, even if you move to a higher tariff.

O2 Travel FAQs

Opting into O2 Travel is easy. Just sign into My O2 and add the Bolt On to your account. Or you can text O2TRAVEL to 23336 and we'll add O2 Travel on to your account. It's free to sign up and we'll only charge you for the days you actually use data, minutes or texts while you're away.

O2 Travel is a free Bolt On that you can add to your account if you're on Pay Monthly. You can use it if you're travelling to O2 Travel destinations - take a look below to see which destinations are covered.

For £4.99 in Turkey and selected destinations outside of Europe you'll get all the data you need, plus 120 minutes to make and/or receive calls and 120 texts to use within your travel destination and back to the UK. 

You'll only be charged on the days you use O2 Travel. The daily charge will apply from midnight to midnight local time (based on the capital city of the country you're in) and won't be triggered by receiving calls or texts. Any calls you receive during the day will be included in your 120 minutes daily allowance. If you go over this limit within the same day period, you'll be charged at the standard roaming rates for the country you're in. 

O2 Travel provides a separate allowance of data, minutes and texts to use while you're away. Your standard UK tariff allowances won't be impacted. 

If you go over the daily calls and texts limit, you'll be charged at the standard roaming rates in that country for any additional usage.

• £4.99 a day – The following countries have O2 Travel at £4.99. Your allowances will apply from midnight to midnight local time (based on the capital city of the country you're in). Any unused data, calls and texts won't be carried over to the following day. If you go over the daily 120 minutes and 120 texts allowance, you'll be charged for any additional usage at the standard roaming rate for your chosen destination. Premium rate numbers, MMS and non-standard texts won't be included in the daily charge and will be billed at standard roaming rates.

If you don't choose our free O2 Travel Bolt On while you're away, you'll be charged for any minutes, texts and data usage at the standard rates for that country. If you're already signed up for O2 Travel and feel it isn't the right service for your usage needs abroad, you can opt out at any time by texting NOTRAVEL to 23336 or you can remove the O2 Travel Bolt On in My O2.

If you're travelling in selected countries in Europe, your allowances and charges will work just like they do in the UK. So if you buy one of our Big Bundles, your minutes, texts and data can be used in the UK and the rest of our Pay As You Go Europe Zone. And for our Classic Pay As You Go tariffs, you’ll be charged in our Europe Zone in the same way as you would be at home. Find out more .  If you’re travelling to Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco or Switzerland, you can stay connected with O2 Travel. For the days you choose to use data, you'll only be charged a daily rate of £1.99, which gets you 100MB. Your daily rate will automatically end at midnight UK time, or when you reach your daily data allowance. If you use up your 100MB allowance and want to get more data in the same day, you can text MORETRAVEL to 21300, to get another 100MB for £1.99. You can find information on calling, texting and data usage abroad here. If you want to opt-in to O2 Travel, just text TRAVELON to 21300 to activate. It can take up to 24hrs to be applied to your account. It's free to sign up and we'll only charge you for the days you actually use data while you're away.  

Alternatively, to opt out of O2 Travel you can text TRAVELOFF to 21300. You'll then be charged our standard roaming rates  for calls, texts and data in your selected destination.

If you're travelling elsewhere, or you don't have the free O2 Travel Bolt On for those five destinations, you'll be charged our standard roaming rates for calls, texts and data used in your destination. You can find details of all of our standard roaming rates for Pay As You Go customers here .

With My O2, you can manage your account and bills online. You can check your usage abroad at any time, without waiting for your next bill.

If you're an O2 Travel We'll try to include all your overseas call charges on your next bill, to help you keep track of your costs. If we don't get the details of calls you've made from another network for a while, this can delay us billing you for them. This doesn't happen often, and it's more common for calls made from countries with smaller networks.

Using your phone outside of O2 Travel destinations

If you’re travelling outside of our Europe Zone and your destination isn’t covered by O2 Travel, you’ll be charged at the standard rates for that country, for any minutes, texts and data you use. Your data usage will be capped to 50MB (£48 per month). Check roaming rates in different countries

You can remove your data cap completely by contacting us. If you choose to remove the £120 cap, you'll be charged the per-megabyte rate for the country you're travelling in. Data is charged at £7.20/MB. You'll also be charged the standard calling and text rates for the country you're travelling in which can be found here . If you want to re-apply the £120 data cap when you're back in the UK, contact us. Terms apply.

Got an International Sim? Depending on how much you’ve topped up, your free O2 to O2 minutes, O2 to O2 texts and data allowances can be used in our Europe Zone, including the UK. Your tariff gives you discounted calls and texts from the UK to international mobiles and international landlines from your Pay As You Go mobile. For other charges, you’ll be charged in our Europe Zone in the same way as you would be at home.

To avoid data roaming charges you can switch your data roaming off when you're abroad, as apps on your phone might connect to the internet to update or get information even when you're not using them. Switching data roaming off ensures you won't get charged. For help with this, go to our interactive device guide . When data roaming is switched off you'll still have the option to connect to local Wi-Fi hotspots to get onto the internet. Please note some Wi-Fi hotspots in your chosen destination may require payment so we recommend you enquire beforehand.

Before you travel, you'll need to make sure you know your PIN.

Calling 901 as usual works in most countries. If it doesn't, call 1780 free from your mobile or +44 7802 090 100, and we'll text you the right number to call. Depending on which country you're in, you'll either go straight to your messages or you'll go to your voicemail greeting. If it's your voicemail greeting, press * and enter your PIN.

If you forget your PIN when you're abroad, contact us and ask us to reset it. You'll then need to change your PIN before you can listen to your messages. If you're abroad, it costs the same to listen to a voicemail as it does to make a call to the UK. There's no charge for receiving a message if you don't listen to it.

If you're an O2 Travel customer and have used your device in an O2 Travel destination, you'll only be charged the daily rate of that destination for the days you've chosen to use the service. (You can find details of what is included with O2 Travel above ).

We'll try to include all your overseas call charges on your next available bill, to help you keep track of your costs. This doesn't happen often and it's more common for calls made from countries with smaller networks.

Accidental roaming occurs when you're in an area close to a national border and your phone picks up the network across the border. If this happens, you may be charged as though you were roaming in the country across the border. You can prevent this by choosing manual, rather than automatic, network selection on your handset and then manually choosing the O2 network. This way if you lose the O2 network, your handset won't try to connect you to a different one. For help with turning off data roaming, go to our interactive device guide .

O2 Travel International Roaming Review: Countries, Speeds & Fair Usage

On O2, you can use your mobile phone abroad at no extra cost in up to 75 destinations, depending on your price plan.

The countries in which you’re able to use the O2 Travel offer depends on the price plan you have. On O2’s Pay As You Go plans, you’ll have access to international roaming at no extra cost in 43 European destinations. This increases to 48 destinations on Pay Monthly plans, and to 75 destinations on Pay Monthly Plus (and on regular Pay Monthly plans if you’re living in a Virgin Media household ).

In this article, we’ll review the O2 Travel offer including the countries where you’re able to use it and how much it will cost. We’ll also look at data speeds when abroad, the fair usage policy on O2 Travel and alternative roaming offers from other networks. Finally, we’ll look at how you can keep your current phone number if you’re moving to O2 to take advantage of their O2 Travel offer.

What is O2 Travel?

On most O2 price plans, it’s possible to use your mobile phone abroad when travelling to other countries. The destinations that are included within the O2 Travel offer depend on the type of price plan you have:

For customers with an O2 mobile broadband plan , the O2 Travel offer isn’t currently available. This is because international roaming is not available on O2’s mobile broadband service.

O2 Europe Zone Countries

The following destinations are part of O2’s European roaming zone (locations marked with a † are only available on Pay Monthly plans) :

• Canary Islands
• Czech Republic
• French Guiana
• Isle of Man†
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• Saint Barthelemy
• Saint Martin
• Switzerland†
• Vatican City

† If you’re an O2 Pay As You Go customer, inclusive roaming is not available in 5 European destinations (Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco and Switzerland). Instead, you’ll need to pay £1.99/day for up to 100MB of data in these countries.

Within Europe, you’re able to use your inclusive minutes and texts to contact any other number within O2’s Europe Zone. Your usage of European roaming is subject to the fair usage policy described here : the most important being that it should only be used “for periodic travel, like holidays or short breaks”. If you use your mobile phone abroad for 63 days or more in any four-month period, O2 reserves the right to apply a regulated surcharge to your usage (currently 3.3p/minute, 1p/text and £3.50/GB).

You’ll be able to use up to 25GB data per month when abroad (or less if your normal UK data allowance is less than 25GB).

On O2’s Pay As You Go plans including Big Bundles , roaming is not included in Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco or Switzerland. In these places, you can pay £1.99/day for 100MB of data.

O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Countries

Within O2’s Travel Inclusive Zone countries, you’ll get unlimited minutes, texts and data when abroad in the following destinations:

• El Salvador
• New Zealand
• United States

There’s traffic management applied when you’re abroad, so your download speeds could be slowed down, depending on your usage.

To opt-in to the O2 Travel offer, text TRAVEL to 23336. It can take up to 24 hours for O2 Travel to be enabled on your account so it’s best to opt-in before departing on your trip. To opt-out of the offer and to pay O2’s standard international roaming rates instead, text NOTRAVEL to 23336.

The £6 per day O2 Travel offer isn’t available to customers on O2 Pay As You Go .

Roaming Speeds

According to their terms and conditions , there’s now a download speed limit of 2Mbps when you’re travelling abroad in other countries. This has applied from June 2022.

The 2Mbps speed limit should be enough for most day-to-day use such as browsing the web, sending messages and using social media. It’s also enough for things like maps and for listening to music. If you’re streaming online video, it should be possible to stream in standard-definition. However, it won’t be possible to stream in HD quality.

Fair Usage Policy

O2 has a fair usage policy for their O2 Travel international roaming service. The fair usage policy depends on whether you’re travelling to another European country or to a country outside of Europe.

Within Europe

According to O2’s terms and conditions , a surcharge may be applied for your usage if you spend more 63 days abroad in Europe over a rolling 4-month period. If you exceed the 63-day limit, O2 should give you the opportunity to demonstrate prevailing use in the UK. They should also give you two weeks notice before a surcharge is applied at a rate of 3.3p/minute, 1p/text and £4.50/GB of data.

Outside Europe

• The download speeds available for file transfer, online gaming, peer-to-peer downloads and network backup services is restricted. According to O2, these services “may not work with O2 Travel”.
• Audio and video streaming optimisation are in use. This may reduce the quality of your streaming content when abroad.
• The use of tethering and personal hotspot is not permitted in O2 Travel countries. This means you’re unable to share your data connection with other devices.
• When using O2 Travel outside Europe, your SIM card can only be used inside a smartphone.

Keeping Your Phone Number

If you’re joining O2 to take advantage of their O2 Travel offer, it’s a straightforward process to keep your current phone number .

To do so, ask your current mobile network to provide you with a PAC Code . You can get this through your mobile network’s website or app, or by texting PAC to 65075.

Once you’ve received the PAC Code from your old network, order your new mobile phone or SIM card from the O2 website. When it arrives, you can provide the PAC Code to O2 by submitting it through this online form . Your phone number transfer will then be scheduled by O2, normally for the next working day.

Traveling With Medical Oxygen by Car, Bus, or Airplane

Traveling with oxygen by car or other forms of transportation may seem intimidating. With a little planning, however, it can be easy, and safely, done.

Before you begin to plan any kind of travel with oxygen , you’ll first need to get clearance from your physician for travel. You’ll want to have his support and expertise to help with your travel plans. You may also need him to sign a letter for the airline, train, bus or cruise line you’ll be traveling with.

After you’ve obtained a physician’s clearance for travel, you’ll need to know the regulations and restrictions of traveling with oxygen. Whether you're traveling by car, bus, or plane, there will be some rules to follow and practical things you can do to make traveling with oxygen as easy as possible.

If you are traveling by car and your vehicle is large enough to transport your oxygen concentrator , you can bring it along with you and use it when and wherever you have electrical outlets. You can carry portable oxygen , which has become quite light and easy to use, for use while in the car and wherever you don’t have access to electricity.

Talk with your oxygen supplier about how much backup oxygen you’ll need. They can also help you arrange for oxygen pick-up from another source at your destination if you can’t bring your concentrator along. You’ll also want the number of an oxygen supplier at your destination anyway in the event you have a malfunction or other oxygen emergency.

It’s important to store your oxygen out of direct sunlight and away from any heat sources. Of course, no one should smoke in the car while it’s transporting oxygen.

By Airplane

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that any person traveling with oxygen submit a letter from their physician stating their need. The FAA has approved two types of portable medical oxygen devices and allows airline passengers to carry them on the airplane.

The two oxygen devices, manufactured by AirSep Corporation and Inogen Inc., work by filtering nitrogen from the air and delivering concentrated oxygen to the user. Because the devices do not carry compressed oxygen, they aren’t considered hazardous to flight safety.

If you’re traveling by plane, check with your oxygen supply company to see if they carry one of the two portable oxygen devices. You will need a doctor’s order for portable oxygen, so be sure to bring this up when you are discussing your travel plans with your physician.

Some airlines may not allow passengers to carry on the FAA approved devices and require, instead, that passengers use the airline’s onboard oxygen. Bus and train lines vary in their rules and regulations. Most bus lines will allow passengers to carry portable oxygen, but you’ll need to check with them in advance of your trip.

Step 1: Consider The Type of Travel

Before you even open your suitcase, you should think about the kind of trip you’re going on and how much space essential items will take up. If you’re packing for a ski trip , you will need to bring heavier, snow-proof gear—but you can re-wear most of it. I’ve found that I’m more likely to overpack on a week-long trip when I don’t think I will have a chance to do laundry and want to be prepared for a few different weather scenarios.

Start with this basic breakdown of how many of each item you should aim to pack depending on how long you’ll be traveling for—with optional items included if you’re traveling somewhere you expect to swim. If you plan on hitting the hotel gym or going for a jog or a bike ride, you should also bring along one outfit for working out and a pair of sneakers.

Weekend Trip

For a weekend trip, you really only need three outfits, or four if it’s a three-day weekend. This includes one nice outfit for going out to dinner, but it does not include what you’ll wear on the way to your destination.

However, things don’t always go according to plan, so you should still pack more than one week’s worth of clothes just in case.

Step 3: Choose The Packing Methods And Products To Help You Pack

If you are flying carry-on only, all of your liquids must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and fit in a clear quart-sized bag. If you check your luggage you can bring toiletries that go over this size limit, but you should still pack, wrap and secure them tightly in plastic bags so that if they they leak during transit, the rest of your items will not be ruined.

Dress Shirts

Your first instinct might tell you to put pants with pants and shirts with shirts, but the most effective way I’ve found to use packing cubes—especially on a trip with multiple transfers— is to group clothing by activity.

Keep your day-to-day sightseeing clothes in a separate cube from your going-out-for-dinner clothes or beach-gear cube. When it’s time to get dressed, you’ll have your outfit pre-planned and I also find that it’s also a good way to store accessories. For example, I always bring my favorite microfiber beach towel with me, so I keep this in a separate cube with my swimsuits, a beach dress and a sun hat. When I’m not looking for my beach clothes, it doesn’t get in the way and it doesn’t get lost.

I prefer cubes with some shape, like these BagSmart packing cubes , but I also like to mix it up. I’ve found that the Eagle Creek Pack-It Tube is the best shape for storing my rolled socks and underwear, which I always keep in my carry-on in case my luggage gets lost.

15 Genius Packing Hacks That'll Make Your First Cruise a Breeze

Packing for a trip is rarely a pleasant experience, but it’s especially stressful with cruises. 

When traveling by plane or car, you can usually get what you may have forgotten to bring at a store. On a cruise ship, though, you’re stuck with what you have until the ship docks.

It can be harder to anticipate what you’ll need, especially if you're embarking on your first one. Follow these simple cruise packing hacks to set up your travel game and enjoy a stress-free trip at sea.

Pack your documents separately

Pack all your important documents somewhere separate and easily accessible. This includes your ID, passport, and all other necessary documents. This will make each step of the process, from the plane to the boat, quick and painless.

Make sure to print out your cruise boarding documents, too. Even if you have your pass on your phone, print out a copy to be safe.

Are you a homeowner? Don't let unexpected home repairs drain your bank account.

Make use of your carry-on

Be prepared for anything by packing your carry-on bag with purpose. If you’re planning to stay in a hotel before boarding the ship, pack accordingly so you don’t have to unpack your whole luggage set just for some pajamas.

There are plenty of ways to design a capsule wardrobe, but generally, it includes a couple of shirts, blouses, sweaters, dresses, pants, and one to two dressy options that are interchangeable when putting together outfits — making it a great option for lengthy trips.

Living out of a toiletry bag may be OK for a day or two, but it can be a nightmare for long cruises.

Instead, consider packing an over-the-door shoe holder and storing your toiletries in that. They also make over-the-door makeup bags, if you want them to be waterproof.

Bring your own power strip

With phone, laptop, tablet, and smartwatch chargers, plus hair tools and other electronics, the number of outlets on board your cruise may not cut it.

If you plan on bringing your own power strip — a smart move — make sure it’s cruise ship approved. This generally means it’s non-surge protected.

Bring your own wine (and corkscrew)

If you plan on drinking on board, come prepared. Many cruise ships will allow you to bring your own wine (usually for a nominal corking fee, especially when compared to cruise ship wine prices). Plan ahead and bring your own.

Make sure to also pack a (cruise ship approved) corkscrew, so you can actually drink it!

Bring reusable drinkware

Don’t waste your money buying overpriced water bottles during your trip. Especially if you plan on exploring and adventuring, bring your own reusable water bottle.

It’s not a bad idea to bring a couple of bottles, including a thermal mug. If you enjoy tea or coffee, you can stock up during breakfast and have enough for the rest of the day without having to pay extra.

Bring reusable food storage containers

The same can be said for food. Avoid having to pay expensive prices for midday bites by bringing your own bags or containers and stocking up when possible.

These containers and bags can also be used in other situations, including extra organization.

Bring a laundry bag/bin

For longer cruises, it’s unreasonable to pack something new for every day of the trip. Even if you can, no one wants to unpack a suitcase full of sweaty, dirty clothes when they get home.

Bring a small, foldable laundry hamper or bag with you so you can keep your room clean, sequester your dirty clothes, and make laundry easier.

Stock up on sunscreen

Coming home with a tan is one of the best parts of a vacation. Coming home burnt to a crisp is less ideal.

Pack more sunscreen than you think you’ll need, including lip balm with SPF. Especially if you’re traveling to a hotter climate with a stronger sun, be prepared to reapply more than usual.

Don’t forget the aloe vera

If you forgot to diligently apply your sunscreen, make sure to bring something to alleviate the pain.

Alongside aloe vera gel, other common home remedies for sunburn relief include oatmeal and baking soda, chamomile tea, and for some, vinegar.

Medications

Aside from bringing any necessary daily medications you take, be sure to bring along some common, over-the-counter medications.

Bring along ibuprofen, acetaminophen, digestion aids, allergy meds, and anything else you commonly reach for in your medicine cabinet at home. Make sure to toss in some seasickness medication, too.

Emergency kit

Put together your own mini-emergency kit for all other random instances. Along with a true emergency first-aid kit, pack other random bits that may be handy in a pinch.

This includes stain-removing pens for your clothes, duct tape for random items breaking or needing to be patched, tampons, a sewing/mending kit, and more.

Pack some cash

It’s never a bad idea to have some extra cash on hand, especially if you’re traveling somewhere that accepts U.S. currency.

Don’t bring so much that it would be upsetting if it were lost or stolen, but some small bills are handy for tipping or smaller purchases you don’t want to use your top travel credit card on.

Why I travel with Bose's QuietComfort Ultra headphones instead of the Sony XM5

The Bose QuietComfort series has been my go-to travel headphones since they released the QuietComfort 35. But in my quest for better noise cancellation, I tried out Sony's WH-1000XM5 , which also feature a sturdier build than the QC45 headphones. In my time with the Sony headphones, however, I realized the grass isn't always greener. I missed the folding earcup design of the Bose headphones, and I'm glad the company has stuck with it for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra .

The folding earcup design makes these headphones some of the most portable I've used, and is one of my main reasons for keeping them in my travel backpack. But there's more to it than just the design. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra are my favorite travel headphones. Here are two big reasons why I went back to Bose (and one additional consideration): 

Comfortable to wear, compact to pack

The bottom line: the Bose QuietComfort Ultra are the most comfortable headphones I've worn in a while. One of the quirks I experienced with the Sony XM5 headphones was that they made my ears sweaty within 30 minutes of wearing them. By contrast, I've worn the Bose QC Ultras for over two hours straight without feeling uncomfortable at all.

I also love the Bose QuietComfort Ultra's folding earcup design because they occupy less space in the bag -- with and without the case. I don't need to carry my case on short commutes, while during longer vacations, the collapsable design means it's compact enough to slide into any bag. By comparison, the Sony headphones have an unusual slant case design, which doesn't fit in bags as well as the Bose case.

At 254 grams, these are five grams heavier than the flagship Sony headphones, but they still feel more comfortable on the head and the neck. Historically, I've found the Sony XM series have a stronger build than the Bose QC lineup, but this time, both pairs of headphones are comparatively sturdy. 

The sound and ANC are top-notch

I like the sound of Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones better than the Sony WH-1000XM5. It could be because I like listening to music with string instruments, and they sound better with a more natural sound profile instead of the warmer sound profile of the XM5s. The bass is stronger on the latter, while it's more controlled on the Ultra. 

That's not to say that bass in songs such as  Vagabond by Wolfmother sound flat – it's still quite strong, but not as thumpy as the XM5s. Personally, I enjoy this sound profile more, especially when I'm working on the go with my headphones on.

I also find the active noise cancellation on Bose QC Ultra perfect for travel. They minimize the airplane buzz and muffle ambient street noise with ease, making the ANC right up there with the Sony XM5, if not better. However, I miss the Speak to Chat feature of the XM5s, where the music stops when you speak -- it makes conversing easier without taking off your headphones. 

Bose has also worked on voice calling functionality, which I previously found way behind on the QuietComfort series compared to the Sony XM5. But the QC Ultra have amazing voice-calling performance, even in windy environments. 

During the Mobile World Congress, for example, the QC Ultra allowed me to coordinate clearly with my workplaces while walking through the halls in the exhibition. People I was chatting with on the other side told me that my voice was clear with minimal background noise.

I like the physical controls too. Bose has moved from the buttons for volume control to a slider on the right earcup. It's intuitive and works well. 

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra have a few considerations

And now for some things I didn't love: First, to turn on the Bose QC Ultra, you press and hold the power button for three to five seconds. After that, they switch on and you get a "power on" voice message. The problem is that the process is not consistent: sometimes it immediately turns on after a three-second hold. Other times, you need to keep it pressed for five seconds before it powers on.

I liked the power switch on previous QuietComfort models, meaning the device just turned on when I pushed the switch. But here, it doesn't come naturally. And in my multiple weeks of use, I still haven't figured out the sweet spot for press and hold.

Secondly, the QC Ultra connectivity with my iPhone was patchy for me. When I first set them up, it took two or three tries to connect successfully. It was only after I unpaired them and repeated the pairing process again that they started working flawlessly. I haven't had the connectivity issue since, however, and overall have loved my experience with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones.
