Fantastic bike. I would recommend for street riding (jumping stairs and curbs... e.t.c).

Brakes overheat very fast that’s all

It wery suitable for a big guy like me. I do all terrin, but usually a bumby terrin close to home. I use it 3-5 times a week, normally about 20 miles “roughly 30 km”

Could anyone please let me know If you guyes if you know if any of the Shimano Di2 system World/fits the rumblefish.? I cant Seem to figure it out.

the kinematic/rear end construction and the damper a good alloy frame and yes, the weldseams are on other frames better

the configuration of the bike the wheelset is a j..e XT-brakes and complete XT-shifting would clarify the price of the bike but they aren´t on it the fork, isn´t stiff enough .

i own the bike since may 2012 i´m happy with it. works really well but i upgraded the front suspension to 140-150mm (beside many other parts) ... ok the seattube angle could be better now but it isn´t a problem when you pedal uphill i ride primarily single trails, sometimes steep stuff downhill, sometimes technical, sometimes little jumps (max. 1/2 metre high - europe metrics) alloumtain if you wanna but it in this MTB riding mode average tours 20-60 km depending how much time i have also in winter good suspension - fox/trek DRCV damper similar to a coil spring damper maybe i buy in the near future a rockshox debonair (available from the fuel ex 29, should fit in the rumblefish) to try another fabricate the advertising description of trek´s ABP (dave weagle calls it splitpivot) "Our patented Active Braking Pivot allows your suspension to work freely whether you’re on the brakes or off. It’s smooth, controlled suspension that’s at its best all the time." is not really so good workin´ ... don´t get me wrong it´s stiff and reliable but if you brake the damper doesn´t work so well like it´s descriped in the text above or in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ByO7WI_Vvg but it´s not so negative when you ride the trail real fast and that´s one of the advantages of the bike the good working kinematic of the bike in relation with the damper takes every obstacle and makes you smile ! i often thought about an upgrade to the fuel ex 29 but why? is it really stiffer (shorter seattubestays) ? in my opinion: NO is the trek full floater in combination with ABP, DRCV or Monarch RT3 debonair damper better ? in my opinion: YES, a little bit but it´s really good reliable bike (much better than many other i had in the past) the weakness of the bike is the fork the drcv damper in it is also working well but when it get´s steep it blows through the stroke a bit and you have not enough travel or call it: rollover effect/feeling a good low speed compression would help i made a testride with the pro model and the RLC fox on it works better it´s also not so stiff ok, the manitou tower isn´t also as stiff as the fox 34 (whatelse!) or a rs pike but ... maybe these are only my personal opinions and efforts of making the rumblefish elite even better :)

Solid feel, DCRV suspension, handling

stock tires & grips

I rented the bike first for a test ride and didn't want to give it back. I have also test ridden the Pivot Mach 429 but didn't feel the added cost was worth it. It hasn't really improved my times on my regular trail rides, but it has significantly improved my confidence. When a friend with the bike told me about the benefits of the thru axle, I didn't get it until I rode the bike hard - I didn't realize how much the QR axles on my 26er flexed. I replaced the stock grips before I took the bike out the first time, and had the stock wheels & tires converted to tubeless when I bought the bike. I plan to upgrade to Stan's Flow or Arch when I have beat up the stock Bontrager Duster rims. I was leery of the Shimano SLX components that came on the bike, but so far they are performing great. I will upgrade to XT or XTR when they fail, but so far, so good. I also plan to install a remote dropper seat post, but that's an upgrade I wouldn't expect on a bike at this price point. The only negative I have experienced is that I have more pedal strikes with this bike than my 26er, but am told that this is normal for 29ers with this type of geometry, and I am learning how to avoid them...

Pivot Mach 429

Fast & Fluid!!

Like most 29ers, a few pedal strikes in technical terrain.

I was down to this bike or the Giant Trance X 1, I picked the Trek just because of the positioning of the rear shock on the Giant and man am I glad I chose the Rumblefish. I have owned the bike for about 6 rides now and I am on average 15% faster on all of my 1.5+ hour rides. I am finding that I utilized the CTD control on the rear shock a lot and love it. The dual chamber shock system is great! This bike is fast and fun. My only complaint is the rear tire seems to break loose in hard braking, but that's easy fixed with new rubber. This bike flys and it just seems to always want to keep on moving :)

Smooth ride, plush suspension, corners surprisingly well, great kit, zero unwanted flex anywhere, makes me feel like I am a good mountain biker when I am not, you don't really feel the weight, climbs like a champ

paint chips somewhat easily, recommend some sort of paint protection

I got mine on sale so the value is great. By far the best bike I have ever owned.

The over-all geometry of the bike likes to be written and puts the rider and weight perfectly over the wheels for speedy well balanced cornering, climbing and stable plush descents. While descending the ABP gives you a secure stable feeling of control...thought it was a gimmick at first, but its amazing how plush the braking is while hammering down hill. I'm still trying to feel the shocks DRCV advantages....it just works and I don't know the difference with or without. While it takes a bit to get up to speed on the climbs...it gives it all back in the flats and the descents like riding a LazyBoy recliner! Take some time to play with your shock settings as you can dial in almost any ride preference, style preference. I ended up raising the pressure in the fork and dropping it in the rear shock for a nice ride that likes to get gnarly and aggressive in the descents. Tons of funs stable riding wit da fish!

A little heavy at 29-30 pounds, but tubeless and a few weight tweaks and your loving the bike. It made me a better rider, and now I don't feel the difference from my hard tail unless I'm on a LONG climb.

Plain and simple it's a great all mountain bike that loves Moabs epic rides AND the Whole Enchilada. If you love the simplistic joys of mtn biking this bike is for you....if your trying to race pro.....then go carbon. Test drive this bike.....you will take it home! NOTE: I test drove a Pivot Mach 5.7 and well........I think the ride is a little better at half the cost!

Trek Rumblefish Elite review

Big wheels and mid travel make most trail problems a lot smaller

Guy Kesteven

trek rumblefish elite 2013

One of the first mid-travel 29er trail bikes, the Rumblefish is a very well proven and capable all-rounder. A naturally docile rather than dynamic feel and relatively high weight means it’s best suited to those focused on riding everything in their path rather than getting to the top first.

Ride & handling: Sluggish initial feel hides a very capable bike that excels on the climbs

The Rumblefish's Fox 32 Float fork and RP2 shock are both equipped with Trek's proprietary DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) technology. This means they have twin inline air chambers instead of just one. The idea is that a smaller, tighter-feeling chamber handles the early part of travel for a responsive pedalling feel, while the second, larger chamber takes over deeper into the stroke for a smoother, plusher feel.

The Trek pedals well and picks up speed okay for a bike the far side of 13.5kg (30lb). The bigger air volume and strike angle of the 29in wheels (compared to 26in hoops) let it roll smoothly over the smaller chatter the suspension would otherwise ignore too. Out back the seamless transition between chambers gives a very well controlled, progressive feel when you’re launching off or clattering through rocks, and overall frame composure is excellent.

We’re less impressed by the dive-prone fork that sees you regularly hitting full travel even if the situation doesn’t demand it. Combined with the straight up seatpost and a broad saddle that nudges you forward, this places a lot of weight through the handlebar and front wheel. Great for cornering and braking traction, but sometimes unwelcomingly like you’re being jostled further towards the edge than you want to be.

Things got noticeably better when we deliberately over-pressurised the fork and under-pressurised the shock to settle the bike back on its haunches. With this balance the vast amounts of traction from the chunky tyres and stiff tracking feel were more obvious and easy to make use of. In fact, once you’re rolling the Rumblefish takes the ball and runs with it, scrambling up and steamrollering through technical sections without a second thought.

We’re not convinced by the DRCV fork balance, but the 120mm-travel Trek is a lot faster and more capable on the trail than it seems at first. Climbing tenacity in particular is outstanding and its ability to trivialise trail trauma soon becomes an addictive advantage.

Frame & equipment: Stiff, full feature, mid-travel 29er frameset; high control, highly durable kit package

The purposeful looking raw-alloy-under-lacquer chassis gets every modern frame fixture you need, from tapered head tube to screw-through 142x12mm rear axle, while the straight top tube gives ample standover despite the big wheels. The Fox 32 fork gets a custom Trek 29er offset to create a unique steering feel and a twin-chamber DRCV air spring to match the rear shock.

A Shimano Deore XT/SLX/Deore stop-and-go mix gives faultless, weatherproof performance that’s hard to beat. The Rhythm Elite wheels from Trek sub-brand Bontrager add breadth and tubeless-ready capability to the already high volume, high grip tyres. Switching to faster-rolling rubber for some of the test livened the naturally lazy feel of the bike up dramatically for very little cost in climbing tenacity.

This bike was tested as part of What Mountain Bike magazine's Bike of the Year shootout. You can read the full feature in this month's mag, in shops now, and available on Apple Newsstand and Zinio .

Trek’s big wheeled Rumblefish is not just a mile muncher

What does mbr really think about 29er bikes? Simple — there are good bikes and bad bikes. Find out how the Trek Rumblefish shapes up. Photos by Roo Fowler

This year sees the rear travel on the Rumblefish increase by 10mm to match the 120mm travel fork. And with Trek’s DRCV suspension technology front and rear, it’s easily Trek’s most capable 29er to date.

trek rumblefish elite 2013

The 2012 Trek Rumblefish Elite

Combining key features developed on Trek’s 26in bikes — E2 tapered head tube, ABP suspension and oversized alloy pivot hardware — with the increased acceptability of bolt-through dropouts front and rear, the Rumblefish chassis offers unprecedented stiffness for a 29er.

In the features frenzy on the Trek website — we counted 16 in total — it seems to have overlooked one of our favourite ideas: bump-stops integrated into the chainstay protector, where the forward one should prevent the chain getting caught up in the rear tyre. Another neat idea is the two rotating line guides for running a dropper post remote cable either side of the top tube.

trek rumblefish elite 2013

DRCV shock provides a more linear spring curve

The ABP rear suspension design on the Rumblefish is very similar to the Trek Fuel EX, but instead of having the shock running parallel to the seat tube, it is tucked under the top tube. This puts the ProPedal lever on the Fox RP2 shock within easy reach — not that it matters, as the Rumblefish pedals perfectly well with the shock open.

Up front, the 120mm DRCV Fox Float RL does what it says on the tin and combined with the QR15 lowers, it gives the Rumblefish an edge over the Camber.

Plagued by pinch flats on the rock-strewn trails of Afan, we were about ready to chuck the Rumblefish into the trees. We’ve had a similar experience on other Bontrager rims, and attribute it to the sharp, square profile of the rim edge. We were running thinner tyres than stock, but the following week the rear wheel pretty much collapsed on the not-so-rugged trails of the Surrey Hills.

We love the raw stopping power and reliability of the Shimano SLX brakes. But the Servo Wave design also produces dead lever travel and some resistance at the start of the stroke. Ultimately, the SLX brakes don’t offer the same sensitivity and modulation as the Avids.

With a 690mm riser and rangy 105mm stem the steering response and balance of the 19in Rumblefish felt a little odd. After some experimenting we settled for a 60mm stem and 750mm bar.

Big wheels can jump

Performance

With the cockpit sorted and balance restored, the Rumblefish revealed the beating heart of a trail demon. This bike simply rockets up climbs, without having to sit on the nose of the saddle or crouch down to get your weight over the front wheel. The bigger wheels deflect less off rocks and help smooth out the trail. Comfortable? You bet. Better ride quality than the Fuel EX ? Yes. Boring? Hardly.

On the descents, the Rumblefish begs you to go as hard as you dare, but the sweet sound of the breeze is too often accompanied by the hiss of a pinch flat.

The tauter suspension doesn’t offer as plush a ride as the Camber, but the Rumblefish pumps better and rides flatter for it. On our steepest test track, the Rumblefish set marginally faster times than the Camber, no doubt aided by the extra 10mm of travel and longer wheelbase, only to lose out on flatter flowing trails. One downside of the increased stability: the suspension can’t be preloaded as easily to help get the bike off the ground, or when throwing your weight back. Obviously, there are pros and cons to both set-ups.

>>> Click here to find out more about geometry with our handy guide

Contrary to how most 29ers are marketed, it is the steep, nasty, rooty descents where the Trek Rumblefish Elite really excels. It’s no slouch on the ups either, despite its big bones.

The solid chassis and good geometry make for a confidence-inspiring ride and the balanced, controlled suspension response aids the sense of security.

And while Trek should be commended for investing in state-of-the-art suspension technology, the Rumblefish also needs the components and wheel strength to back it up, especially given that the Specialized Camber is well dialled straight out of the box.

Is a 2013 Rumblefish Elite a good bike.

  • Add to quote

Hey guys, this is my first post on here. I am looking to buy a decent mountain bike and have ran upon a 2013 Trek Rumblefish Elite in really nice condition for a real nice price. The reviews I have read are mostly from 2013 though. Can anyone tell me if this is still a relevant bike in todays market, or should I just keep saving and get something different. I am supposed to go look at it Friday and would really value any input. Thanks.

trek rumblefish elite 2013

I owned one. It's a OK bike IMHO, It's the same suspension design that the Superfly had. Which was in the end replaced with the current full float setup. It's a very good all-around bike. I found the weak points in mine. It doesn't like aggressive trail riding with drop offs or lots of jumps. I found the rear end liked to hop too much. again this is just my opinion I'd still ride one if i had it, just to work and with the fam on slower riding days A lot of it comes down to how much they are selling it for. That will be a HUGE part in the if it's worth it or not to buy it or save for another one

trek rumblefish elite 2013

rear end had some flex. yeti made this design work on the asrc and i don't know if it's just the carbon they use is really stiff or what, the alloy superfly FS and rumblefish both had rear end flex you could feel. for awhile i thought it was the frame design, then the asrc happened and i realized that wasn't it that said i'm nit picking and realize nice superfly FS bikes and rumblefish bikes are maybe 1500 with good parts, that yeti is 5k

Hey Brent, thanks for your input. The one I am looking at is said to have less than 100 miles and is in very good condition. They have came down to 1150 on it. I can buy a 2016 Scott Spark on closeout for about 2300 now or I can wait a few months and buy something else. I just don't want to buy something that's already outdated/gonna be hard to find parts for if I need them. I know either of these are not highend bikes, but to me they are a tremendous upgrade to what I currently have.

Think of this also. It may be a good deal. There is nothing wrong with the bike as far as being out dated really. It uses a 15x100 front axle and a 12x142 rear axle. It has DRVC valving in the fork and shock which is no longer made for Trek. If I recall the Fish was the last to have that in the fork. Mine had it also. The lifetime frame warranty only applies to the original buyer. So you won't have a frame warranty. That may not matter. I have only needed to use the frame warranty one time so far.. thank god. I have how ever killed the seatstay on my Fish. that was a costly repair

My current ride is a 13 Rumblefish Elite. It was a huge step up from the Sugar 293, my previous bike, which I rode for 10+ years. My son just picked up a 17 Fuel Ex 9.8 which I've ridden a bit and its nowhere near as big of a step from the RF to Fuel Ex as it was from the Sugar to the RF. In tight singletrack the RumbleFish is a quicker handler and its pretty easy to shed weight from it, making it a decent climber. If its your first decent bike and you can get it for a good price go for it.

Well I ended up buying it. Its a far cry from my 2000 era Schwinn Frontier lol. I haven't got to ride it but once so far, but I think I am going to like it pretty good. It's all stock, I ordered new tires for it last night, any good ideas on upgrades please feel free to let me know. Thanks for your input guys

trek rumblefish elite 2013

Rumblefish is a great Trail bike. Lighten the wheels and this bike climbs like a Monkey on crack, while shredding the downhills. Read my 2013 MTBR Review. Good pick!

Thanks Cayenne_Pepa, comments like this are really pumping me up on the bike. How do I find your review on here, I am still new to the site, I will look for it.

  • Trek Rumblefish Elite – Decision Time

A great picture of a Trek Rumblefish Elite

 Trek Rumblefish Elite

After a lot of web browsing and soul-searching, I have decided to order a 2013 Trek Rumblefish Elite from my local bike shop. I think the most difficult part of the decision was not whether I would get a Yeti or Trek mountain bike because the Yeti cost skyrocketed well past my budget. The difficulty came in the form of which Trek Rumblefish to get. The  Trek Rumblefish Pro is perfect except for its price of about $3700. The Trek Rumblefish base model comes in at $2170 and well under budget. That leaves the Trek Rumblefish Elite in the middle of the pack in both cost and hardware. The funny part of this was I was caught between purchasing the Trek Rumblefish and hoping I would have the restraint to not spend a ton of money on upgrades a year later or purchase the Trek Rumblefish Pro and be done with it. It was at this point that Greg at Class Cycles chimed in with an honest opinion. Greg stated that unless I had money to burn the Trek Rumblefish Elite was the best bike for me and maybe even the Trek Rumblefish  would suffice as the technology of any of these mountain bikes is leaps and bounds over what I am used to with my Gary Fisher Sugar 3 Disc. Greg unaware sold me on the  Trek Rumblefish Elite .

Now here is an ironic side note. The Trek Rumblefish Elite is a Gary Fisher mountain bike under the Trek company name. When I bought my Gary fisher Sugar 3 Disc in 2002 Gary Fisher Bikes was a division of Trek Bikes. Now in 2013, They are one and the same. They are all Trek Bikes.

If there is one thing I don’t like about the Trek Rumblefish Elite it is the color. I think either of the other two Rumblefish models look great. I’m not real crazy about the grey and green finish of the Trek Rumblefish Elite .

I will be placing the order in a few weeks. Stay Tuned.

Put a deposit on the Trek Rumblefish Elite today. Im VERY excited. Now I need to select pedals and maybe shoes if I can find a deal.

The Trek Rumblefish should be delivered to Class Cycles along with some shovel-able snow on Tuesday

I have the bike on hand now. Looks much better in person. Also internet pictures do not give a proper sense of how big these 29er’s are.
