You can also upgrade your Triplog car mileage tracker by purchasing a Triplog Beacon, which plugs into your car’s USB port and instantly detects movement.

Or, if you don’t want to use your phone and your car has internet and bluetooth connectivity, you can install a Triplog Drive, which tracks trips and mileage but doesn’t deplete your phone’s battery or use up your data.

If you connect a bank, debit, or credit card account, you can automatically download transactions into the Triplog app.

This allows you to track both expenses and income, and you can also make adjustments and add transactions manually.

Where Triplog wins out is in the customer service arena.

Plus, Triplog’s basic paid option only costs $4 per month and offers a free trial, whereas Mile IQ costs almost $6 and does not offer a free trial period.

Everlance  and Triplog both offer a free service.

But, the next tier up at Everlance is much more expensive than the Premium service from Triplog.

Triplog costs can go up dramatically when you add features, but Everlance starts at more than $100 a month , making its business software a mileage app suited for larger companies, as opposed to a single user.

For your money, Everlance provides all of the same services as Triplog but doesn’t feature an employee time clock.

Triplog has fewer free features than Stride .

But, the availability of some advanced features, like the Triplog Drive and Beacon setups, are not available on Stride.

That said, they both offer accurate mileage tracking, so you can deduct mileage expenses at tax time.

Stride’s mileage tracker is part of a family of apps designed to recommend wallet-friendly health plans and save people money on their taxes.

They’re available across the United States.

Hurdlr  and Triplog are essential apps for Uber drivers .

Both apps are very similar in terms of pricing, features, services, and integration.

They are pretty much in a dead heat against each other, but Triplog is a bit less expensive for users who select middle-of-the-road packages.

Hurdlr excels at reporting, as there are ways to automatically send your tax professional or accountant copies of your deduction report and mileage at tax time.

How Much Does Triplog Cost?

Triplog pricing varies, so for details, check out their comprehensive pricing guide .

For a quick snapshot, the plan details are below.

The Lite plan  is free, but only a single user can take advantage of the app.

It’s limited to forty trips or logged expenses per reporting period.

Lite plans have manual trip tracking only, but you can record toll and parking expenses and even calculate an estimate of your fuel mileage.

The Premium Triplog plan costs $5.99 per month per user.

You can have up to ten users on one plan, and you can access Triplog on the app or their website.

You can save 16% over the monthly fee by paying once annually.

The Premium Triplog version offers all the features from the Lite plan, plus a few other features that appeal to small businesses .

You’ll have unlimited tracking of mileage automatically, expense tracking with automatic optical recognition capturing your receipts, and even integration with your bank and credit cards.

The Enterprise plan  carries over all of the features from the Premium plan.

Since this version of the app is for companies with many employees, it allows for unlimited users.

But, since the number of total users can vary so widely, you’ll have to request pricing for your particular needs.

In addition to the items in the Premium version, Enterprise users will also have access to an administrative console online, where a company can adjust their policies for tracking mileage to suit their business needs.

It can also integrate with other business processing services, like QuickBooks or Paychex to streamline your back-office functions.

It can also flag accounts when users are potentially over-reporting mileage, potentially saving you money.

The optional Time and Scheduling add-on costs an additional $4 per user, per month.

But you can add it to any plan.

It offers some additional features that might appeal to businesses large and small:

How to Sign Up for Triplog

To use Triplog, you need to have the app installed on your device.

So to get started, choose a plan.

It tracks your mileage automatically, and you can then categorize your drive as personal or business with a single swipe. It provides various ways to track your mileage—including manual, Bluetooth-enabled, and automatic tracking—and allows you to track up to 40 trips per month for free.

It also integrates with third-party software like QuickBooks, making it easier to manage your mileage expenses. For individuals, it has a free plan and a paid monthly option at $5.99 per user and, for businesses, its paid monthly subscriptions begin at $10 per user. However, TripLog gets a perfect score in mileage tracking features because it allows users to track mileage in different ways. It offers devices that track mileage if you don’t want to use your smartphone. Meanwhile, Hurdlr takes the lead in related app features because it also offers accounting and tax calculations.

TripLog Pricing

TripLog offers two packages, one for individuals and another for businesses. The free option for individuals supports a single user and lets you log up to 40 trips per month manually, while Premium supports unlimited tracking for individuals.

Meanwhile, the business plans’ prices start at $10 per user, per month, which includes automatic tracking with GPS and route planning. Enterprise, the most expensive plan at $15 per user monthly, has advanced mileage tracking features, like multi-level approval hierarchy and custom tags. A Time and Scheduling add-on is also available at $4 per user, per month.

Optional Devices & Add-ons

TripLog offers two optional devices that you can use for tracking your mileage. You need to subscribe to a paid plan to purchase these devices.

• TripLog offers a 30-day return policy on its devices from the day the item is delivered.

TripLog New Features for 2023

• TripLog Card: TripLog offers a reloadable company debit card service to improve user experience in expense tracking and reimbursements. With this program, users can charge company expenses using TripLog and reconcile all TripLog card transactions automatically.
• TripLog ACH: The automated clearing house (ACH) feature enables users to reimburse employees for mileage within the TripLog dashboard. All ACH reimbursements will also appear as separate within your accounting software for faster categorization.
• Notification System: This allows TripLog admins to send notifications to their teams, i.e., TripLog users within your organization, specific segments, or even to company-specified departments. You can also set certain notifications to be recurring, scheduled, or to additionally send an email notification.
• In-app Approval Management: Administrators in the Enterprise plan can now approve their drivers’ mileage and expense reports, as well as time cards, from within the TripLog app.

When you click on Compare Auto Start Options from the Setup menu, you can take the virtual quiz to help you decide which option is best suited to your needs. Based on your answer, TripLog will recommend a tracking option for you.

Web Dashboard

Employers and administrators can manage their company’s trips, vehicles, and app users from the web dashboard. The TripLog dashboard gives you access to all the app’s features, including mileage tracking, expense tracking, reports, credit card integration, and timesheets. You can add trips and users, view maps, and adjust settings. The web dashboard also provides you with an option to download the mobile app:

TripLog offers six different options for automatic mileage tracking:

• MagicTrip: With MagicTrip, TripLog can track your driving in the background automatically. It starts tracking automatically within the first two minutes of driving and stops automatically if you’ve been idle for five minutes, or whatever time period you specify. MagicTrip also responds with your Speed Threshold and automatically tracks if you’re reaching these thresholds. The advantages of this method are that it’s easy to set up, and it tracks in the background. MagicTrip is available only in the paid plans.
• Vehicle Bluetooth: With this option, you only need to connect your smartphone to the vehicle’s Bluetooth. Tracking starts if you drive over the speed threshold while connected. An advantage of this method is that it only tracks when connected to Bluetooth.
• TripLog Drive: This device is a dedicated device from TripLog. It has built-in GPS, and tracking doesn’t involve smartphone use. An advantage of this method is that it doesn’t use your phone’s battery and data resources.
• TripLog Beacon: This device uses Bluetooth technology but boasts of its moderate battery consumption. Beacon starts tracking when driving over the speed threshold and while connected to the smartphone Bluetooth. An advantage of this method is that it doesn’t use your car’s Bluetooth, so you can connect your vehicle’s Bluetooth to other devices without interrupting tracking.
• Plug-n-Go: If you’re in the habit of plugging in your smartphone while driving, the Plug-n-Go feature will also allow you to track while your device is charging. Unplug your phone, and the tracking stops. An advantage of this method is its minimal battery consumption.
• OBD-II Scanners: This is a device that connects to your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics scanner (OBD) connector and transfers data via Bluetooth.

In addition to setting your preferred tracking method, there are other important adjustments you need to make:

Setting Up Auto Start

• Timeout and Speed Threshold: The Speed Threshold feature dictates when the app should start tracking. By default, it’s set at 5 mph or 8 km/h. It means that the app will start tracking automatically if you reach a minimum speed of 5 mph. The Timeout feature dictates when the app should stop tracking. For example, say you stop at a Starbucks on the way to work. If your Timeout is set at 15 minutes, the tracking won’t stop unless the car is idle for more than 15 minutes. If you expect heavy traffic, it’s best to set Timeout at a higher duration so that the app keeps on tracking even if you’re stuck in traffic:

• Responsiveness: MagicTrip utilizes GPS to track your driving distance. To improve the accuracy of tracking, you can choose More Responsive. It means that the app will have to use GPS more often to track your location. As a result, it’ll use more battery and data. The opposite is true for Less Responsive. Adjusting responsiveness can help you accurately track nearby drives. For example, there’s a delivery that’s only two blocks away. Due to the relatively short distance, more responsive tracking yields more accurate tracking information:

Add a Vehicle

TripLog also allows you to add vehicles for efficient tracking. You can also set a default vehicle so that you don’t always have to choose when recording a trip.

Manual Tracking

In manual tracking, you’ll need to enter the starting point and endpoint of your journey. For Lite plan subscribers, manual tracking is the only option available. TripLog will compute the distance automatically. You’ll also need to input the time. We don’t recommend using manual tracking because accuracy will always be an issue here.

Fuel Economy Calculator

TripLog calculates fuel economy based on the fuel transaction information that you enter into the app. It calculates the total, average price, and fuel economy to help you reduce fuel consumption.

Expense Tracking

One of the reasons TripLog is our overall best mileage tracker app is because of its added expense tracking feature. You can add different kinds of expenses associated with your miles. We like this feature because it’s easier to relate and pinpoint expenses. For example, you can add a Meals and Entertainment expense if you meet with a client. To record tolls and parking, click on the trip and edit it.

Classifying Trips

TripLog classifies a trip as business or personal in a single swipe. Swipe right to classify the trip as business and left as personal. Alternatively, you can click on the item and choose the appropriate category.

Approval Management

Through the app, drivers can submit mileage and other expenses to be processed. Approving expenses happens on the Web Dashboard. Only account administrators and approvers can access this dashboard. This feature is available starting with the Premium plan.

To approve expenses, go to the Mileage tab to see the list of submitted expense reports from drivers. The approver can either approve or reject an expense. Either way, the approver will have to leave a comment for the submitter:

Once approved, TripLog can generate a report for payroll. This report will be used as reimbursement documentation to be included in the submitter’s next paycheck. By clicking Schedule Pay All, reimbursements will be scheduled, and the submitter will be notified.

Route Planning

Another great feature of TripLog is route planning, which enables you or your company drivers to plan trips using the shortest routes. The route planning feature is integrated with Google Maps. With this feature, you can establish an optimal route that incorporates up to eight destinations. When planning routes, the app starts with your current location, and you can then add up to eight stops. The app will create a round trip that brings you back to your point of origin automatically.

TripLog generates reports on vehicle tax deductions, nonvehicle-related tax deductions, profit and loss, and time spent on each location. TripLog has a default report template—but in any of the paid plans, you can modify the template by removing or adding elements. Reports from TripLog are IRS-compliant, and you can submit them as supporting documents for your allowable deductions. You have the option to download or email reports in HTML, CSV, or PDF format.

Users of both the mobile app and the web dashboard can enjoy reporting features for mileage expense tracking. TripLog’s reporting feature can help with tax filing, especially if you’re claiming allowable expenses.

Great app and works well syncing in with Bluetooth in the car most of the time. Occasionally need to restart it to get it resumed again. My business calls for logging of mileage for tax purposes. Over the years I have been frustrated with the mileage apps that are on the market. They either do not cover off what I require or they are not easy to use. TripLog is both of these. Covers off all the financial information I need to record and it is simple and easy to use. Which is brilliant when my team and I have to record several times a day. Highly recommend.

I have used the phone app only over several years and it has not failed once. Great and fast customer support. Immediate response with a solution so I did not have chase anyone for an answer. Definitely worth a subscription knowing that it is extremely accurate and there’s help available - if you need it.

What is TripLog?

TripLog  offers more than a mileage app. The company seeks to make mileage and expense tracking easier for everyone with their modern products like GPS Mileage tracking device (which allows you to track mileages for your trips without mobile data).

TripLog 2.0 can be used to estimate your gas mileage and find the best gas prices.

I’ll be honest, TripLog comes off as an advanced and flexible mileage tracking solution that has been highly tailored to do its job thoroughly.

For the sake of this review, we’ll just cover the TripLog mileage app itself and all its features, along with how it stacks up against other mileage tracking apps like Stride .

How Does it Work?

You can use the Triplog app  for real-time mileage tracking either automatically or manually.

To use it manually, you’ll use the app’s real-time GPS location to log your driving distance and driving time. Current mileage rates are pre-loaded in the app and you can customize them as you see fit.

When you’re manually adding a trip, you can categorize it with pre-loaded or customized activity. This would come in handy if you’re using the app to track your mileage when driving for both Uber and Lyft so you can keep this separate.

TripLog makes it easy to add and edit trips even after the fact. While manual tracking is available with the free version, you’ll have to upgrade to the paid version for automatic mileage tracking.

TripLog’s professional version starts at $4 per month, but you do get a 30-day free trial when you sign up to try out the app. From there, you can decide if you want the extra automatic features or will just stick with the free version.

There are a variety of options that allow you to track your mileage easily including:

Magic Trip – Fully automatic tracking that allows you to track trips just by getting into your vehicle and driving. The app will monitor your speed in the background and kick in after 2 minutes of driving then shut down after you’ve been idle for 5 minutes.

Car Bluetooth – Gives you the option of using the existing Bluetooth connection in your car to track mileage for trips. You can set this up in the app.

Plug-N-Go – This is TripLog’s top option for people who are in their vehicle all day. You can trigger tracking by plugging in your phone into your car charger and driving over 5 MPH. With this option, battery drain is not an issue. The only possible issue is that you have to remember to plug in your phone. If you don’t, your mileage won’t be tracked.

TripLog Beacon – This versatile tracking option requires you to purchase TripLog’s device that can be inserted into your car’s USB port. The device will instantly detect vehicle movement and start tracking your trips with minimal battery usage.

TripLog Drive – TripLog Drive is a GPS mileage device that allows you to classify your trips and track mileage accurately. The device plugs right into your car’s USB port and can save your phone battery and data. The device is currently selling for $79.99.

Expense Tracking

Tracking expenses with TripLog can be easy and automatic. Just connect a bank account or credit card and the app will start pulling transactions from your institution.

You’ll be able to track your business expenses and income as well. You can also add transactions manually and upload receipts to stay organized.

Getting Set Up

Getting set up on the app should only take a few minutes. You can start by doing things like setting up your desired tracking method (if you already know what you prefer). Or, you can choose to do this later in the Settings section of the app.

Next, connect your debit or credit card to enable expense tracking.

Then, choose what type of driving you’re doing.

In your dashboard, you’ll see the app is instantly ready for MagicTrip mileage tracking. Or, you can start tracking your trip manually by pressing the green button at the bottom of your screen.

TripLog will show you your current mileage, and an estimated deduction amount for the month as well.

You can go to the fuel tab to track your fuel expenses and, with this information, TripLog will calculate your estimated miles per gallon (MPG).

Does TripLog Help With Taxes?

TripLog integrates with your debit and bank cards to help you track expenses. Users can also use the web dashboard to review mileage and rideshare expenses from a laptop or desktop. This is helpful because TripLog can also aid when you’re filing your taxes.

App users can upload data to platforms like Quickbooks, Xero, and Concur.

You can also log into the app with Intuit, which is also used for TurboTax  and Quickbooks. Having these integration options on hand will only make it easier, then it’s time to gather all your data and file taxes if you’re considering using DIY tax filing programs.

I like how Stride offers a benefits tab to show users their insurance options. If you’re driving for Uber or Lyft full-time or don’t have another job to cover your insurance benefits, it’s important to know what your options are.

However, if you’re just looking for mileage and expense tracking help, I like how TripLog shows mileage rates for each type of driving you can do, whether it’s rideshare, for business, charity, etc. For manual trips, the app also allows you to enter your odometer ready for more accurate mileage tracking.

Overall, TripLog can cost more per month with its added devices (optional) and additional features. However, some drivers may see the benefit of buying an external device like TripLog Beacon or TripLog Drive to track their mileage while others may not view it as necessary.

I can appreciate the fact that TripLog seems to have heard our complaints about glitchy apps and mileage trackers that slow down data and drain cell phone battery. They’ve created some new devices to help make these easier for drivers which can be appreciated whether you’re looking to actually buy one of their devices or just stick with their basic mileage tracking app.

What is a trip log and how does it work on my Garmin?

What is a trip log and how does it work?

Trip logs are points that are automatically stored when the device is locked onto a satellite signal and is moving. It is the electronic equivalent a "breadcrumb trail" marking the path that has been traveled.

Camper/RV, dezl, dezlCam, LIVE, nuvi, nuviCam, or zumo device can store 10,000 points before it they start of archiving additional logs (see note below). If the device get above 10,000 points, it moves the oldest trip data into an internal archive file. Up to 20 archive files can be stored internally on the device. This means, depending on space available, the device can store over 200,000 points of trip data.

Archived trip log information is not visible on the device itself, but can be used and seen with either Garmin's MapSource or BaseCamp programs.

To open and view these individual archives: 1. Attach the Garmin to the computer 2. Open the Garmin drive     on Windows - in Computer or My Computer     on Mac - on the Desktop 3. Open the Internal Storage folder    Skip this step on some devices 4. Open the Garmin folder    Skip this step on some devices 5. Open the GPX folder 6. Open the Archive folder    Each archived GPX file can be opened in MapSource or BaseCamp.

To celebrate Mother's Day 2024, the two  TODAY   hosts are treating themselves in the best way: by taking the show to Bermuda . 

"We have been  waiting  for this trip. It's finally here." Hager said. 

"We are so excited. We've got a Bermuda Bash, and we're going to soak in the sun, we're going to enjoy the nightlife, we're going to go shopping, we're going to be eating, all the things," Kotb eagerly chimed in. 

But the twist? They plan on taking two lucky guests with them! Thanks to Loren hotels, two viewers will be able to accompany Kotb and Hager on their tropical adventure. Stay tuned for more details.

How Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager spent Mother's Day 2023

Last year for Mother's Day, the two hosts spent precious time with their family. Kotb took to Instagram to share heartwarming photos of her two adopted daughters , 7-year-old Hayley and 4-year-old Hope . In the snapshots, we get to see the happy family of three smiling at a beach , blowing out candles, and more. 

“Happy mother’s day! Hopey and Haley— you made me what I had always dreamed of becoming— a mother,” she wrote in the caption. “And to my mom— nothing was even possible without your love xoxo.”

As for Hager, she talked about how she spent the day with her husband, Henry Chase Hager , and her children, 11-year-old Mila, 8-year-old Poppy, and 4-year-old Hal . 

"You have to have low expectations, so you have low expectations and then you're just grateful you get to enjoy it," Hager told Kotb while on  TODAY .

"The kids cut me some flowers, which I thought was really sweet," she shared. "Henry got me some Mexican food for dinner, which I love. And then Henry was like, 'Who wants to say a toast for mommy?'"

"Mila's like, 'Meh, Happy Mother's Day Mommy.' Nobody really wanted to, which is fine," she added with a laugh.

She continued: "Poppy actually said a beautiful prayer. She was like, 'The moment you were born, changed my life.' Which is… true!"

How often does a sitting US president visit Tampa Bay? You’d be surprised.

Florida may not be quite the presidential swing state it once was. In the 2020 election, with its electorate shifting gradually to the right, Sunshine State voters went for Donald Trump — only the second time since 1960 that Florida didn’t back the eventual winner.

But one thing you can count on: If it’s a presidential election year, the president will usually make at least one stop in Tampa Bay.

Almost every four years since 2000, the sitting president has visited the region, often on the campaign trail, but occasionally just to talk policy or conduct official business. That trend will continue on Tuesday, when President Joe Biden will make an appearance in Tampa to talk about abortion access in Florida and around the country.

This is a campaign stop, not an official White House visit, meaning it’s not primarily taxpayer-funded. But it is Biden’s second visit to Tampa as president, and approximately the 30th local stop by a sitting president this century. (We’re mostly just counting Hillsborough and Pinellas County visits, though we did include a couple of stops in other nearby counties.) Presidents have also dropped into Tampa Bay before they reached the White House, or after they left. But it’s always a much bigger deal anytime Air Force One touches down.

Here’s a look at Tampa Bay visits from presidents since 2000.

Biden visited Tampa Bay several times as vice president, including once on the eve of the 2016 election , when he appeared at a St. Petersburg rally alongside singer Jimmy Buffett. But he’s only been here once as president, on Feb. 9 of last year , when he spoke about health care at the University of Tampa days after the State of the Union address. He was scheduled to visit in July 2022, but the trip was called off when he tested positive for COVID-19.

Donald Trump

Speaking of COVID-19, one of Trump’s four presidential trips to Tampa Bay came on July 31, 2020, when, following a news conference at Belleair’s Pelican Golf Club, a journalist covering his visit tested positive for the coronavirus. (Trump himself tested negative.) Trump’s first local visit as president was a trip to MacDill Air Force Base in 2017. He later held campaign-style rallies at the Florida State Fairgrounds in 2018 and Raymond James Stadium in October 2020.

Barack Obama

While running for reelection in 2012, Obama spent a lot of time in Tampa Bay, which hosted that year’s Republican National Convention. The Democratic president visited the Tampa Bay area no fewer than five times that year, including three times in September and October. During one of those visits, he stopped by the West Tampa Sandwich Shop for a Cuban and about 45 minutes of politicking. During another, he attended a high-dollar South Tampa fundraiser with celebrity chef Tyler Florence and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder.

In all, Obama visited Tampa Bay at least eight times as president. In 2010 , he came to the University of Tampa alongside then-Vice President Biden for a discussion on high-speed rail funding. He spent the night here in 2014 , sleeping at a Hilton in downtown Tampa before meeting with military brass at MacDill and popping in for a visit at Tinker Elementary School. And he came once in 2016, after Trump had been elected his successor, speaking at MacDill about his record on terrorism.

George W. Bush

Considering much of his presidency overlapped with his brother Jeb’s stint as Florida’s governor, perhaps it’s no surprise no recent president has spent more time in Tampa Bay than Bush. He came to the area at least 15 times as president — including, famously, on Sept. 11, 2001 , when he was reading to a class of schoolchildren in Sarasota when he learned terrorists had attacked the World Trade Center.

Like Obama, Bush was an active campaigner in Tampa Bay, visiting at least five times between February and October 2004 during his reelection race against John Kerry. During one visit, he campaigned in New Port Richey — one of the few times a sitting president has ever visited Pasco County — and stayed at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Pete Beach. He also stopped by the University of South Florida in 2002 to stump for Jeb’s reelection campaign.

The Republican president came down so frequently — an average of about twice a year — that it’s hard to keep track of all his travels. In 2001, he helped build an east Tampa home for Habitat for Humanity. In 2006, he took questions from residents in Sun City Center . In 2006, while in town for a fundraiser for then-state Rep. Gus Bilirakis’ first congressional campaign, he stopped by the Buccaneers’ practice facility , signing footballs and talking with players and head coach Jon Gruden. In both 2003 and 2004, he dined at Bern’s Steak House.

He did not, however, come in 2008 to campaign locally for Republican presidential contender John McCain, in part because Bush’s low approval ratings were seen as a negative.

Bill Clinton

Like Bush, Clinton didn’t campaign much for Al Gore during the 2000 presidential race, fearing his impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky scandal might hurt his vice president. But he did appear once that July , speaking at a senior center before headlining a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for then-Sen. Bill Nelson.

A disabled woman planned a 'once-in-a-lifetime' trip to Disney World. Then the park changed its disability policy.

• Disney has revised its Disability Access Service program for theme park guests.
• The updated policy came as some guests attempted to exploit the service.
• But a coalition of people with disabilities says the new policy does more harm than good.

Savannah spent nine weeks and thousands of dollars planning her family's trip to Walt Disney World .

"For me and my husband, this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip," Savannah, 36, told Business Insider.

It wasn't a simple process for the Indiana-based couple, who planned to travel with Savannah's 72-year-old mother. They had to ensure that Savannah, a lifelong Disney fan, could navigate the sprawling theme parks as someone with a physical disability.

"I have had physical issues for the last 10 years that have prevented me from doing a lot of things," she said.

Doctors discovered that Savannah — who asked that her last name not be published for health privacy reasons — had an os trigonum , which is an extra bone found in the back of the ankle, around 2013. Savannah had accidentally broken the os trigonum while running one day and didn't receive medical treatment for eight months.

The incident has continued to cause her pain and affect her mobility. She's undergone 16 surgeries since she was 17, including 12 surgeries on her ankles. Most recently, she underwent a subtalar fusion procedure in August after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 15 months ago.

Savannah had accepted that a Disney World vacation wasn't feasible until her physical therapist told her about Disney's Disability Access Service , which allowed guests who could not stand in line due to a disability to schedule rides in advance and then wait somewhere else until it's their turn.

Savannah doesn't lack full mobility but would need frequent breaks to navigate Disney World, so the service sounded like a good solution. She and her husband went ahead and booked a vacation for May 20.

"I got that glimmer of hope again," Savannah said. "Everything finally lined up, and I was sitting on cloud nine. Then, Disney dropped that bombshell."

Disney's new disability policy

The bombshell: Disney announced earlier this month that it would revise its Disability Access Service policy.

Disney's policy previously allowed anyone who had "difficulty tolerating extended waits in a conventional queue environment due to a disability" to participate in the program, according to Fox Business .

Now, the service is more narrow, accommodating "only those Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time."

Disney's policy change was, in part, an attempt to prevent able-bodied guests from exploiting the service. A Disney spokesperson told BI last year that there's been an increase in people misusing the service to skip lines and avoid crowds. Disability services are now the most requested service at the California and Florida parks, according to The Washington Post .

"Disney is dedicated to providing a great experience for all Guests, including those with disabilities, which is why we are so committed to delivering a wide range of innovative support services aimed at helping our Guests with disabilities have a wonderful time when visiting our theme parks," a Disneyland spokesperson said in a statement.

The Disneyland and Disney World websites include information for individuals with disabilities across different categories, including mobility.

One alternative for Savannah is the Rider Switch service, which allows one adult to wait with non-riders while the remaining group members enjoy the attraction. When the guests return from the attraction, they can swap places with the waiting adult, who will be allowed to board the attraction without waiting in line again.

But Savannah said the Rider Switch service isn't a good fit for her because she intends to explore the park with her husband, meaning her mother would have to stand in the lines. "Does she really need to stand in a line for 75 minutes for me while I sit isolated from my group?" Savannah said.

Disabled fans accuse Disney of discrimination

Now, Savannah and more than 140 others are calling the revised policy discriminatory.

In a formal letter addressed to Disney's top brass — including CEO Bob Iger — the coalition pointed to cancer patients, narcoleptics, veterans with PTSD, individuals with Parkinson's disease, and other groups as people now excluded from Disability Access Services.

"Punishing disabled individuals for the actions of able-bodied individuals who abuse the system is not a solution," the letter reads. "These changes fail to adequately address abuse; people who abuse the system will still lie."

Savannah told BI that the changes have inadvertently pushed a harmful narrative about who is "disabled enough" to qualify. "You're not the right kind of disabled and you don't matter. That's the way that Disney is portraying that," she said.

She and her husband have already saved $4,000 and collected around $400 in gift cards to cover their vacation costs. However, the policy changes — scheduled to go into effect the first day of their Disney vacation — have upended everything.

"I've invested all of this money that you're not going to give me back if I can't physically go," Savannah said. "What does that look like for me? It did not feel like the Disney that I have heard so many good things about."

Savannah added that had she and her husband known about the policy changes ahead of time, they wouldn't have spent their time or money on Disney.

"I absolutely would not have gone to Disney. I would not have chosen to spend my money there. I would have spent my money at Universal [Studios], where they still treat me like a person," Savannah said.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.
