In this relatively untouched part of Indonesia , it’s still possible to have a coastline all to yourself, eat with locals at night markets and buy some of the most beautiful ikat  (dyed, patterned textiles) at weekly trade markets, direct from the women who made it.

For travellers yearning for an Indonesian holiday away from the crowds with a hefty dose of culture and genuine sense of adventure, this is your destination. 

Dive into technicolor reefs

Whether you’re well acquainted with creatures of the deep or it’s your first time open water diving, it doesn’t get much better than East Nusa Tenggara’s vibrant underwater worlds. Labuan Bajo is the jumping off point for famed Komodo National Park , but there are plenty of opportunities to get up, close and personal with giant manta rays, turtles, sharks and thousands of species of tropical fish well before you get there.

Prices are competitive in Bajo centre, with three-dive day trips and three-day Open Water Diver certifications popular options. Liveaboards are the die-hard’s choice, especially when diving is at its best between April and September. The Alor Archipelago is a lesser-known dive destination unless you’re into the sport, in which case you already know that dive operators there visit more than 42 dive sites. Along with its white-sand beaches and volcanic terrain, Alor is celebrated for uncrowded crystal waters and unspoiled coral reefs. Shark and dolphin sightings are common, but visit in November to catch migrating sperm whales.  

Specific to the area, Komodo dragons grow up to 3m in length and weigh up to 150kg. Like any reptile, they’re more active at dawn and dusk – something worth taking into consideration when choosing a tour. There isn’t a widely accepted explanation as to why the dragons are only found in this tiny part of Indonesia, but their ancestors are thought to have come from Australia four million years ago. Estimates put current numbers at up to 5000 in the wild today, but the number of egg-laying females is supposedly only in the hundreds.

In July 2019, local authorities briefly considered closing Komodo Island to tourists to help revive the dragon population, but they later reversed course, instead announcing an annual membership program . Premium membership will come with a hefty price tag of USD$1000 to support infrastructure improvements on the island, though non-premium members will still be able to visit other spots the Komodo dragons call home, like the island of Rinca (where Komodo dragon sightings are even reportedly better).

Visit East Nusa Tenggara's villages

East Nusa Tenggara’s villages each have their own sets of customs, beliefs, traditions, adat (traditional law) and – in some cases – accepted constructs of time. In the village of Boti in West Timor , the charismatic kepala suku (chief) presides over a nine-day week. His people live off the land, refuse government assistance and have been operating the same way since Dutch colonists and headhunters failed to find them, keeping lives and traditions intact 21 generations later. Staying overnight in the modest accommodation and spending time with the 77 families who live here will be a highlight of your Indonesian travels. 

Arrange your stay through a guide, who will be able to act as a translator and advise on what’s appropriate to bring as a gift alongside the nightly fee of 100,000Rp per person. Another of West Timor’s preserved villages, Temkessi, is accessed through a keyhole between two limestone cliffs, 50km northeast of Kefamenanu. The people here believe that god gave their ancestors the power to command the sea, decedents still able to control the weather. A guide is necessary here, as is the customary offering of betel nut before you’re welcome to take pictures of the beehive huts built on a cliff’s edge. The island of Sumba is also home to impressive villages, the most well known being Ratenggaro. Located on a grassy bluff above a river with breathtaking views of the sea, it’s a sight to behold – even if it does feel a bit touristy.

When visiting these villages, keep in mind the local etiquette: bring betel nut as an offering, remove your shoes at any doors, be patient (Indonesia is notorious for running on its own clock) and remember that a smile goes a long way. When payment is required to visit or stay at a village, you’ll be asked to sign a guestbook. Do so, and leave your money in the book.

Hike volcanic peaks

While Labuan Bajo is becoming more popular, many don’t bother to explore the rest of Flores , which is speckled with stunning hikes through jungles and up volcanic peaks. One of the island’s main drawcards is a sacred, extinct volcano called Kelimutu. On top of the 1639m peak are three volcanic lakes, nicknamed the tri-coloured lakes. Moni, a village filled with homestays and reggae-loving locals, is the best place to sleep before you make the climb.

Wae Rebo, arguably the best Manggarai traditional village to visit, is the reward at the end of a tricky 9km hike. After three to four hours and some exquisite views, you can stay overnight in a traditional home before turning back or hiking another six hours to a different trailhead for pick up. Another volcano worth climbing looms high above Bajwawa. At 2245m, Gunung Inerie is an eight-hour round trip, but you need to start at 3am to catch the spectacular sunrise. Alternatively, you can camp by the lake.

Surf the best of Sumba and Rote Islands

Sumba and Rote Islands are surfing hot spots. Throughout the vast island of Sumba, surfers set up at a number of small homestays and surf camps along the coast, taking daily trips out in the owners' boats to catch the best break. Those eager to stay near superior surf should stay at Sumba Adventure Resort , Marthen's Homestay , Rua Beach Resort , Sumba Surf Camp or – if you can afford it – Nihi Sumba .

Rote is a small island just southwest of West Timor with postcard beaches and some of the best surf in the world. Surfers of all abilities book up the homestays at Pantai Nemberala during peak surf season, from June to September. The beach is known for the legendary ‘left’, T-Land. Many places rent high-quality boards from about 100,000Rp per day, which can be a big help given that weather conditions often ground the small Wings Air planes that leave from Kupang and Bali. The airline charges 200,000Rp per board but doesn’t always have the space for them.

Nusa Tenggara ("Southeast Islands"), also known as the Lesser Sunda Islands , is a region in southeastern Indonesia .

Formerly little more than afterthought for most Bali-bound travellers, this region is now attracting more and more visitors, with Komodo National Park close to Flores island and Lombok leading the way.

Nusa Tenggara is one of the least developed and least visited parts of Indonesia. But United Nation World Tourist Organization (UNWTO) acknowledged Indonesia as an example of success in developing tourism. In 2016 East Nusatenggara got 6 medals from 10 categories of Anugerah Pesona Indonesia 2016. Gold medal of Most Popular Surfing Spot of Nemberala Beach, Rote Ndao Regency; Gold medal of Most Popular Cleanliness of Nihiwatu Beach, West Sumba Regency; Gold medal of Most Popular of Historical Site of Ende Bung Karno (Proclamator and the first Indonesia President) Site; Gold medal of Most Popular Diving Site of Alor Island, Alor Regency; Silver medal of Most Popular Attraction of Pasola, Southwest Sumba Regency; Bronze medal of Most Popular Highland of different color of three lakes/calderas of Mount Kelimutu, Ende.

While the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa have a majority of Muslim inhabitants, the vast majority (90%) of the rest is Christian, with a strong Hindu presence on Lombok and a good number of remnant aspects of animist belief. Nusa Tenggara has been largely spared the religious conflicts of nearby Sulawesi and Maluku .

The Wallace line , the boundary between the Asian and Australian ecosystems, passes through the region, between Bali and Lombok. Therefore, Nusa Tenggara is part of Wallacea , a transitional ecozone, identified by both the WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area.

Talk [ edit ]

Bahasa Indonesia is spoken throughout the region, along with a host of regional languages. English is understood in some of the larger towns and cities, in particular those with significant tourist infrastructure. Outside of those places, do not expect English to be either spoken or understood. Dutch may be spoken by some seniors.

Being a vast archipelago, the main means of transport are by plane and by ship.

By plane [ edit ]

The main airports, with frequent flights from Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali), are Lombok ( LOP  IATA ), Labuan Bajo (Flores, LBJ  IATA ) and Kupang (West Timor, KOE  IATA ). From Denpasar there are also regular flights to Bima (Sumbawa), Ende and Maumere (Flores), and Tambolaka and Waingapu (Sumba).

There are also several international flights to the region. Lombok is connected to Singapore (Scoot) and Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia), and there are direct flights between Kupang and Dili in East Timor (Air Timor).

By boat [ edit ]

There are frequent ferry services from Bali to Lombok . There is a ferry from Padang Bai, whilst there is a fast boat to GilI Islands and Senggigi from Sanur, Benoa, Kuta, Padang Bai and Amed. Connections between Nusa Tenggara and Indonesia's other islands are limited to the occasional PELNI ferry sailing between Makassar (South Sulawesi) to Flores and, if you really want to get away from it all, from various ports in Papua via Tual and Saumlaki , Maluku to Kalabahi , Alor and onward to Flores.

Get around [ edit ]

The network of inter-island flights has grown considerably over the last decade. Kupang Airport ( KOE  IATA ) is a hub for East Nusa Tenggara, with flights to all other airports in the province. Similarly, there are flights from Lombok Airport ( LOP  IATA ) to Bima and Sumbawa Besar on the island of Sumbawa . Alor Island Airport ( ARD  IATA ) can be reached from Kupang and Atambua.

By bus and ferry [ edit ]

From Bali in the west to Timor in the east, the classic island-hopping backpacker trail across Nusa Tenggara runs something like this:

• Ferry from Padangbai , Bali to Lembar , Lombok
• Overland across Lombok via Senggigi
• Ferry from Labuhan Lombok to Poto Tano , Sumbawa
• Overland across Sumbawa via Sumbawa Besar and Bima
• Ferry from Sape to Labuanbajo , Flores
• Overland across Flores via Maumere to Ende
• Ferry from Ende to Kupang , West Timor
• Overland across Timor to Dili , East Timor

Popular detours include visiting the 3 Gili Islands lying a few km of the western coast of Lombok and Komodo north of Flores. Less popular options include going via Sumba instead of Flores .

A night time ferry also runs, sometimes, from Waingapu, Sumba to Ende, Flores, taking about 11 hours.

• Komodo dragon . The Komodo dragon, which lives in Rinca and Flores as well as Komodo islands, is the largest lizard in the world. Tours of are available where dragons can be seen in the wild. Tourists must be accompanied by park rangers who use forked wooden sticks to fend off any approaching dragons, and provide information about the islands and wildlife. The practice of feeding dragons stopped in 1992.

Eat [ edit ]

With a drier climate, there is less rice and more sago, corn, cassava, and taro compared to central and western Indonesia. Fish is popular including sepat , which is shredded fish in coconut and young-mango sauce.

Drink [ edit ]

Jus pokat (avocado juice), often including a swirl of chocolate, is generally very good.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Komodo dragons , at up to 3 m (10 ft) in length, are more than capable of killing a human with ease, although human predation is rare. Zoologists formerly believed that the main problem was the dragon's diseased-filled bite from the rampant bacteria residing in their mouth. More recently theories have been put forward that the Komodo dragon is actually venomous, and that the biggest problem when bitten is shock and massive blood loss due to the ferocity of the bite. Whichever, getting bitten is not a good thing.

The dragon usually bites a larger animal and then waits for the infection to kill it. So, despite the fact that being actually eaten is unlikely, the bite itself can be deadly. Keep at a considerable distance and never enter dragon territory alone. If you use basic common sense you should have a wonderful time viewing these magnificent animals. The absence of crocodiles on Komodo Island (due in part to a lack of suitable habitat) leave the Komodo Dragons with no natural predators.

Saltwater crocodiles ( Crocodylus porosus ) also reside in most of this area, however they are not found on Komodo. The saltwater crocodile is the largest of all living crocodilians and the average size for an adult male is 5.2 m (17 ft) (although the largest saltwater crocodile on record was 8.8 m (29 ft) in length, from northern Queensland). They are known throughout their range as man-eaters and account for many human deaths every year. This can all be avoided by using basic common sense. Never swim in the ocean near a river mouth, in swamps or in large rivers. Never clean fish near the water or frequent the same spot at a river over a prolonged period of time, saltwater crocodiles are known to memorise a potential prey item's patterns for days or weeks at a time before attacking.

Lake Kelimutu, A Perfect Place for Exploring the Extraordinary

Mt Kelimutu National Park is the smallest among six national parks in the stretch between Bali and the Nusa Tenggara islands. Its size obviously does not matter much when it offers one of the most spectacular wonders that nature has to offer. There are three lakes on the mountain sharing the same name, Kelimutu, meaning ‘the boiling lake’. Each has its own colors and a local name. But all are believed to be the resting place of departed souls.

Kelimutu lakes are unpredictable as to when and what color they will change into. Sometimes, the colors are blue, green, and black, and some other times they turn to white, red, and blue. The last time a traveler saw them, one was dark brown, just like a pond of chocolate. Previously, the east lake was red and the middle lake was blue.

Lake Kelimutu is part of the Kelimutu National Park, presenting a highly aesthetic value and surreal experience. The national park’s highest point is 5,679 feet at Mt Kelibara (1,731 meters), and 5,544 feet high (1,690 meters) at Mt Kelimutu. It is a national park that protects 19 endemic and endangered animals, among which, the Floresian punai (Treron floris), Wallacea owl (Otus silvicola), Floresian kancilan (Pachycephala nudigula), Floresian eagle (Spizeatus floris), and Timorese tesia (Tesia everetti).

Kelimutu area is surrounded with forest containing floras that are scarcely found in Flores area. Other than pines, there are also casuarinas, red wood and edelweiss. Pine forest grows well in this side of Kelimutu Mountain. The other side of the mountain is dried land with highly unstable sand and soil. Local community believes that Kelimutu Mountain is sacred and donates fertility to the nature nearby.

Visitors can only walk around Lake Kelimutu but not all areas can be explored because some are dangerous and therefore restricted.  From Moni to Kelimutu, if you like to go trekking, there is a path which is shorter than the car access route.

Distance from Moni to the top is about 12 km. The distance to the parking lot by motor vehicle is 11 km, and then visitors will climb on foot through the pathway for 30 minutes.

Koanara village, in the Wolowaru sub-district is closest to Mt Kelimutu, and is about 66 km from the town of Ende, or 83 km from Maumere. Moni is the closest small town, lying at the foot of Mt Kelimutu. It is the gate to Lake Kelimutu. The distance between Moni and Kelimutu is 15 km.

You can take an  ojek , a motorbike taxi, car or public transportation to take you to a parking lot before Kelimutu’s peak. Buses to Ende from Maumere will pass Moni. They call it  BIS KAYU  or  oto kol , the wooden pick-up truck. From there, you must walk 30 minutes along the mountain side. There are daily flights from Denpasar and Kupang to Maumere. I was on vacation in Indonesia and not able to keep my original zoom appointment at my hotel as my diving boat schedule was changed. I emailed Gerard the day before when I found out but he was on a 5 day tour on the other side of the island and could not get his email. He was not happy with me as he had to leave his tour to do the zoom which I had asked to reschedule. It just didn't work out.

Dear Julie, Thank you for your review, even though you did not experience the Flores-Indonesia Tribal Hand Woven Fabrics online tour. Not even a Zoom meeting, no direct communication via email or telephone. Even though your review is excellent with five stars, but I am sorry, that does not make me happy in the slightest. You know why, I feel wronged by your non-committal attitude. I have to waste extra time to make a 5 day overland tour package, also have to leave my guests who were trekking in the interior for 2 days and have to pay a village guide to accompany them because I have to return to Maumere for a Zoom meeting with you. I was really disappointed. I had gone back and forth to the village walking up and down the mountain for almost 8 hours hoping to have a discussion and then face to face tour with you, but the result was in vain. Without any further response, suddenly you give me a five-star review and ask for a refund. And you also did not say cancel beforehand. Taman Nasional Kelimutu

Entah kenapa lama kelamaan huruf “ng” hilang dan menjadi Pulau Kera sampai dengan saat ini. Jumlah penduduk yang tinggal di Pulau Kera tidak banyak, bahkan bisa dihitung jari.

Untuk bisa sampai ke lokasi, Anda harus menyewa perahu kecil untuk menyebrang ke sana. Dibutuhkan waktu sekitar satu jam perjalanan jika ditempuh dari Bolok. Setibanya di sana, Anda akan langsung disambut hangat oleh penduduk setempat.

Bisa dibilang kawasan Indonesia bagian timur mempunyai destinasi pantai yang cantik. Jika dibandingkan dengan pantai di Bali mungkin keindahannya bisa diadu. Salah satu sekian pantai indah yang ada di NTT yakni Pantai Pink.

Objek wisata pantai NTT ini sudah termasuk ke destinasi favorit para wisatawan. Keindahan Pantai Pink ini bahkan sudah terkenal sampai ke mancanegara dan menjadi salah satu pantai terindah di Indonesia .

Daya tarik utamanya tidak lain karena pantai ini mempunyai pasir pantai yang berwarna pink, berbeda dengan pantai-pantai pada umumnya.

Banyak wisatawan turis asing dan lokal yang datang ke tempat ini karena penasaran dan ingin melihat langsung fenomena alam yang unik ini.

Pantai Lasiana

Berada di kelurahan Lasiana, Kecamatan Kupan Tengah, NTT, Pantai Lasiana memiliki daya tarik berupa hamparan pasir pantai yang halus dan bersih serta air lautnya yang cukup jernih sehingga pandagan mata dapat melihat ke dasar laut.

Pohon kelapa yang tumbuh berjejeran di sekitaran pinggir pantai membuat menjadi teduh dan tampak lebih asri. Belum lagi terumbu karang yang tumbuh subur dan masih terjaga tampak indah saat ikan-ikan berseliweran mencari makan.

Para wisatawan dapat leluasa bermain air di pinggiran pantai melihat ombaknya yang tidak terlalu besar sehingga aman. Selain itu Anda juga dapat memancing di pinggiran pantai, menangkap ikan-ikan laut yang ada di sekitar terumbu karang.

Pantai Neam

Memang tiada habisnya wisata pantai di Nusa Tenggara Timur ini. Semua jenis pantai lengkap ada di sini.Selanjutnya ada Pantai Neam yang mempunyai pasir putih yang menawan. Lokasinya berada di Desa Bean, Kec Buyusari, Kupang, NTT.

Cantiknya Pantai Neam pasti akan membuat wisatawan langsung jatuh cinta dengan NTT dan betah berlama-lama di sini. Gulungan ombak yang cukup besar cocok untuk bermain surfing di atasnya.

Pulau paling ujung timur dari gugusan Pulau NTT ini tidak hanya mampu membius wisatawan lokal saja melainkan sampai ke mancanegara juga tak kalah terkesima saat melihat langsung sajian alam ciptaan tuhan yang luar biasa ini.

Kejernihan air lautnya sampai membuat kawanan ikan dan kehidupan bawah laut dapat dengan jelas terlihat dari atas permukaan. Tak heran jika Pulau Alor mendapatkan julukan sebagai tempat dengan spot diving terbaik di Timur Indonesia.

Taman Nasional Komodo

Siapa yang ga kenal dengan destinasi wisata satu ini? Ya, wisata Taman Nasional Pulau Komodo merupakan objek wisata kebanggan masyarakat Nusa Tenggara Timur, pasalnya pulau ini telah masuk dalam warisan keajaiban dunia versi UNESCO.

Seperti anggapan semua orang, nama pulau ini berasal dari hewan yang banyak hidup di pulau ini, yaitu komodo. Bisa dibilang kawanan komodo yang tinggal di pulau ini menguasai seluruh wilayah pulau.

Manusia yang tinggal di sana hanya petugas konservasi yang menjaga dan mengawasi aktivitas kawanan komodo. Jika ingin pergi ke sana harus menyebrang menggunakan kapal, karena Pulau Komodo berada jauh dari permukiman warga.

Pantai Koka

Tempat wisata di NTT satu ini terbilang cukup tersembunyi karena lokasinya yang berjarak 35 kilometer dari pusat kota Maumere, tepatnya berada di Wolowiro, Sikka. Karena tersembunyi, Pantai Koka masih sepi wisatawan yang datang.

Renungan Harian Katolik Sabtu 4 April 2024,"Menyeberanglah Kemari dan Tolonglah kami!" 

POS-KUPANG.COM - Provinsi NTT saat ini sudah memasuki musim kemarau .

Berada pada musim kemarau , Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika ( BMKG ) mengingatkan masyarakat Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur ( NTT ) untuk mewaspadai kebakaran hutan dan lahan karena angin kencang.

 "Masyarakat perlu mewaspadai adanya potensi angin kencang yang sifatnya kering di musim kemarau yang berpotensi menyebabkan meluasnya kebakaran hutan dan lahan di wilayah NTT ," kata Kepala Stasiun Meteorologi El Tari Kupang Sti Nenotek di Kupang, Jumat, (3/5/2024).

Ia menjelaskan sebagian wilayah NTT secara umum telah memasuki awal musim kemarau. Pada kondisi ini, pertumbuhan awan mulai menurun dan angin monsoon timur sudah mulai aktif.

Hal itu berpotensi menyebabkan angin kencang yang dapat mengakibatkan kejadian kebakaran hutan dan lahan.

Sti mengingatkan masyarakat untuk mewaspadai kejadian itu dengan melakukan berbagai langkah antisipasi.

Ia berpesan agar masyarakat tidak membakar sampah atau dedaunan kering secara sembarangan. Sedangkan bagi para petani, Sti mengimbau agar tidak membuka ladang baru dengan cara membakar.

Adapun kondisi angin kencang ini, ujar Sti akan berlanjut sampai bulan Agustus tetapi tidak terus menerus terjadi setiap hari.

Ia menyebut angin yang lebih kencang disertai gelombang tinggi diprakirakan terjadi pada periode bulan Juni hingga Agustus.

 "Terus waspada terhadap cuaca ekstrem dan terus mengupdate informasi cuaca dan peringatan dini dari BMKG ," kata dia berpesan. (*)

BANJARMASINPOST.CO.ID, NUNUKAN - Sempat dirujuk ke RSUD Nunukan Kaltim, geger bayi asal Nusa Tenggara Timur meninggal di penitipan.

Diketahui bayi Aprianus Sabud dirujuk ke RSUD Nunukan berbarengan bayi Muhammad Naufal dengan diagnosa infeksi paru paru.

Kedua bayi tersebut sempat menjadi sorotan publik Nunukan, lantaran adanya dugaan keteledoran pengasuh di tempat penitipan anak (TPA) milik PT BSI.

Tangis sang ibu pecah di kamar mayat RSUD Nunukan melihat bayi semata wayangnya terbaring kaku.

Seorang bayi karyawan PT Bumi Sei Menggaris Indah (BSI) dinyatakan meninggal dunia pada Kamis (02/05/2024), di Ruang Pediatric Intensife Care Unit (PICU) RSUD Nunukan pada pukul 08.00 Wita.

Bayi asal Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) bernama Aprianus Sabud (1) itu sebelumnya diberitakan mengalami koma sejak Minggu (28/04/2024).

"Beberapa kali kami bawa anak kami ke klinik perusahaan. Tapi akhirnya dokter di klinik itu merujuknya ke RSUD Nunukan . Dia koma dan kami sudah empat hari di RSUD Nunukan . Kemarin pagi meninggal dunia di RSUD Nunukan ," kata Joni Mbaik kepada TribunKaltara.com, Jumat (03/05/2024).

Joni Mbaik mengaku dirinya bersama istri sudah bekerja di PT. BSI sejak anaknya itu berusia empat bulan.

Sebagai karyawan kebun kelapa sawit mereka mendapatkan upah lebih dari Rp5 juta per bulan.

Kedua pasangan suami istri itu bekerja dari pagi hingga sore hari, sehingga anak semata wayangnya itu dititipkan ke TPA PT BSI.

"Awalnya demam. Tapi akhirnya dokter di klinik perusahaan meminta kami untuk rujuk ke RSUD Nunukan . Mungkin sudah takdirnya anak kami meninggal dunia. Dia sudah tidak merasakan sakit lagi, kami berusaha merelakan meski sedih sekali rasanya," ucapnya.

Joni menuturkan, anak semata wayangnya itu dimakamkan di areal PT. BSI dengan alasan tak ada biaya transportasi untuk kembali ke NTT.

"Sebenarnya kami ingin memakamkan anak kami di kampung. Tapi perusahaan tidak mau menanggung biaya pemulangan. Jadi tidak ada pilihan lagi, anak kami akan dimakamkan di areal PT. BSI," ujarnya.
