U2 2023 In Review

Original story (2023-12-31).

Each year we like to take a little look back at the year that has just passed, looking at the major releases from U2, their collaborators, and other related projects. 2023 has been a busy year with the final shows of Bono’s book tour, the release of Songs of Surrender and the new single “Atomic City” and the first twenty five shows at Sphere. We took a look at those Sphere shows earlier in the week, today we’ll take a look at many of the other projects we saw throughout 2023.

We’ll start by going through U2’s releases for the year, followed by other U2 related releases and solo projects. We’ll then take some time to look back at U2’s performances, promotion of the Songs of Surrender album, subscription gifts, the Zoo Station exhibit in Las Vegas and some U2 related films. Then we’ll look at updates to U2’s YouTube channel for 2023, and a quick look at the U2 X-Radio station for 2023. We’ll wrap it up with a look at our own site for the year, as well as links to prior year updates that we’ve completed.

Let’s dive right in with the U2 releases for 2023…

  • Discography Entry: Songs of Surrender Album – U2

During Covid lockdowns, The Edge started work recreating U2 songs. The project grew to include 40 songs, and became tied in to Bono’s book project via the chapter headings of that project. Initially planned for a November 2022 release (check your vinyl, 2022 is listed on the back on some versions), the album was eventually pushed back to a March 17, 2023 release instead. Three main configurations were released, a 16-track basic version of the album, a 20-track version of the album with four bonus tracks, and a 40-track deluxe box set. Although rumoured for nearly a year before its release, the album was finally announced in January. The announcement? Via 40 letters sent out to fans of the band around the world. The letters, handwritten by The Edge, appeared in countries around the world in early January. A day later, the track list was also announced via a special hunt on Spotify, songs on the new album had updated video content showing the album name in Morse code. Fans were surprised by the number of vinyl versions, as U2 took the marketing path many other current artists have done by releasing a number of coloured vinyl formats. In the end 11 versions of the 2-disc set on vinyl were done in a number of colours. The rarest, in “seaglass blue” was pressed at 1500 copies. The most difficult to find however seems to have been the version done in conjunction with Notre Dame University (pressed at 2500 copies.) The album entered the UK charts at #1, giving them their 11th number one album, tying them with the Rolling Stones. Only The Beatles have had more number one albums as a group.

  • Discography Entry: “ Atomic City “ Single – U2
  • Discography Entry: “ Atomic City “ Promotional Single – U2

One of the bigger stories this year has been Larry Mullen’s health, which has kept him from performing with the band at their concerts at Sphere. A series of surgeries has taken place to repair damage from years of drumming. And in September the band were able to show that Mullen is on the path to recovery, with a newly recorded song, and video filmed in the streets of Las Vegas. The video also shows us Mullen on stage at Sphere. The song itself is an ode to Las Vegas, released to tie in with the launch of the shows there. It’s the first commercial single released physically outside of Record Store Day events in 14 years. The last standalone single outside of those was 2009’s “I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”. “Atomic City” has made an impact in the charts, allowing U2 to take the lead with the most number ones on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. It also gave U2 their first number one on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart on Billboard. In the UK the recent physical singles release, as well as the digital release of a new remix saw the song hit #10 in the Singles Sales Charts, reaching #5 in the Physical Singles Chart, and #4 in the Vinyl Singles Chart.

Three months after the main version of “Atomic City” was released, a second version was issued on December 13, this time remixed by American record producer and rapper, Mike WiLL Made-It. The song was released on all streaming platforms and digital platforms. The regular version was released the week of the first shows at Sphere, and the remix was released the final week in 2023 that the band was performing at Sphere. The name of the producer may not ring a bell immediately for U2 fans, but it is not the first time he’s worked on a track with the band. 2017’s “ XXX ” by Kendrick Lamar featuring U2 was also produced by Mike WiLL Made-It.

  • Discography Entry: Bono and The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with David Letterman Promotional Release

One of the highlights of 2023 was this special, featuring Bono and the Edge speaking with David Letterman about songs, part of the promotion for Songs of Surrender . The special, streamed on Disney+ starting on March 17, also featured footage of Bono and The Edge performing at two locations, the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin Ireland ( December 14, 2022 ) and McDaid’s Pub in Dublin ( December 15, 2022 ). They were joined by a number of other musicians to perform U2 songs at both these evenings. The film also sees Letterman visiting locations in Dublin, interviewing Bono, The Edge, as well as Glen Hansard, and acting as an MC at the Ambassador theatre show, speaking with the audience between takes. At the end of the special is a new song composed by Bono and The Edge, “Forty Foot Man”. The special has been put forth for Emmy Awards, with boxed sets being sent to television influences, and has picked up one nomination for sound. Initially, the special was only available on Disney+ but in May got a wider release on Hulu in the United States. The film also debuted at the Orpheum Theatre and Bono and The Edge were on hand to take questions and even gave a brief performance of “Forty Foot Man”.

Record Store Day Releases

  • Discography Entry: “ Two Hearts Beat As One “ 40th Anniversary Single – U2
  • Discography Entry: Under A Blood Red Sky 40th Anniversary Album – U2

There were two releases done for Record Store Day events this year. Both celebrated 40th anniversaries. Up first was a 40th anniversary single for “Two Hearts Beat as One”, which also featured “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Both of these singles had been released at the same time, in different territories, in 1983, and this year they were celebrated together. The single did not include any new material however, featuring the Songs of Surrender version of both songs on one side, and the original versions on the other. The other release was for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event. This time around it was a new remaster of Under A Blood Red Sky on red vinyl. The same edit as the 2008 version is used, however, sound levels have been tweaked to fix a few issues in that earlier release. With the release on red vinyl, U2 have re-issued all of their albums on coloured vinyl in recent years except for War , Rattle and Hum , Original Soundtracks 1 (Passengers), and All That You Can’t Leave Behind . Unlike most of their Record Store Day releases, Under A Blood Red Sky was also made available on streaming services and digital store fronts.

  • Discography Entry: Zooropa Remaster (2018/2023)

U2 also celebrated the 30th anniversary of Zooropa this year with a special vinyl release on yellow transparent vinyl. The record used the 2018 master of the album, previously available on black and then on blue vinyl. The newest version however, is released in a gatefold sleeve for the first time, and also is in a foil sleeve. The covers are reflective. Unlike Under A Blood Red Sky , a digital version was not made available this time. If you are looking for a digital version you’ll have to find one of the 2018 releases (black or blue vinyl) as those included a download card, which this new release does not.

Single Reissues

  • Discography Entry: “ Lemon “ Single – U2
  • Discography Entry: “ Stay (Faraway, So Close!) “ Single – U2

U2 have been cleaning up their releases on digital storefronts and streaming services, and making more of their catalog available through these services. In July 2022 the band released 11 newly mastered, and cleaned up digital singles, covering from 2004 to 2019. These featured cleaned up audio, and new cover art in some cases. In September 2022 , one additional single was added, “Get Out Of Your Own Way”. This year the band added two additional singles to that list both as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations for Zooropa . In July 2023 , a newly remastered version of “Lemon” was added to digital services including four tracks. And in August 2023 , “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” was also released as a five track single. Initially we were told that the Achtung Baby singles would be reissued as well this year, but plans shifted to a new single instead, with the band getting “Atomic City” finished prior to the opening of Sphere. Maybe we will see those soon?

  • Discography Entry: U2 Space Baby Site

One final U2 project to mention…as fans reached Las Vegas, people started talking about gorgeous, ambient mixes of U2’s Achtung Baby songs being played in Zoo Station, the shop and exhibit the band had set up at The Venetian. These mixes are also heard throughout the lobby of Sphere on show days, and also are heard outside of the building ahead of the show. Everyone is asking how to get these mixes. Fans are really enjoying them. While no traditional release has happened yet, U2 have made the mixes available via the Space Baby site , see the instructions listed in the discography link above if you have trouble finding them.

Other Releases

New Releases:

  • Discography Entry: “ There’s Nothing to Be Afraid Of “ – Gavin Friday

Peter & The Wolf was reworked by Gavin Friday in 2003, for a book and audio release. The pictured used throughout the book were painted by Bono, with help from his daughters Eve and Jordan. This year for the 20th anniversary, an animated film was developed from the book. This fall the special aired on Max (formerly HBO ) in the US and later on RTE in Ireland. Bono appears at the start and end of the film in live action. And a new song is included over the final credits. The song, “There’s Nothing to Be Afraid Of” is co-written by Bono and Gavin Friday, and it is Friday that performs the song. The song was not included on the new soundtrack for Peter & The Wolf but is released as a standalone single (with the instrumental version) on digital services.

  • Discography Entry: Los Angeles Album – Tolhurst x Budgie x Jacknife Lee

The Edge features on two different songs on the album Los Angeles appearing on both “Train with No Station” and “Noche Oscura”. The album is a collaboration between longtime U2 producer Jacknife Lee, and Lol Tolhurst (The Cure) and Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees). The album came out in November.

A number of projects that U2 have been involved in over the years have been reissued in 2023 in various formats. It isn’t just U2 that are reissuing old releases to the market, most artists have been doing so over the years and this year was no different. Operating Theatre re-issued their 1986 single “ Spring is Coming With a Strawberry in the Mouth “ on vinyl in March, featuring all five tracks from the original single produced by Bono, as well as a new remix of one of the songs.

The Produced by Tony Visconti boxset looks back on the career of producer Tony Visconti, featuring newly remastered versions of the songs he worked on throughout his career. Only one U2 song is present, the “live” version of “A Sort of Homecoming” recorded at a soundcheck at Wembley Arena. The track is newly remastered by Phil Kinrade under Visconti’s approval.

R.E.M.‘s Michael Stipe has spoken often about Bono’s contribution to the song “Walk Unafraid” from the album Up and this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that album it was newly released, including remastered tracks, and additional bonus materials. One of these bonus tracks is a newly released live version of “Walk Unafraid” recorded in Los Angeles in 1999.

With the loss of Tina Turner this year, Warner Brothers issued a compilation album Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll in November. The set, available on a variety of formats, includes “Goldeneye”, written by Bono and The Edge. The song is included on the 5LP and 3CD sets, but is not available on the single LP version of the compilation.

Over the last number of years, Universal Music has been selling a new version of The Greatest Christmas Songs each year, with each year bringing a new colour of vinyl for the pressing. It appears however, that 2022 was the final year for that compilation which had featured U2’s version of “I Believe in Father Christmas” and Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. Seven of those songs do make it onto a new compilation this year, Christmas Collected including both U2 related tracks. Like the previous compilations, this one is on coloured vinyl and the 2023 release is on transparent green and transparent red vinyl.

The band could also be found on a new version of The Devil Wears Prada soundtrack, released on black and white marble vinyl, or on red with white marble vinyl. The soundtrack features “City of Blinding Lights”.

They also are featured on compilations from Universal Music: Nineties Collected Vol. 2 (Purple vinyl, “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)”), Now That’s What I Call Massive Hits & #1s (4xCD, “Vertigo”), Now Millennium ’00-‘01 (CD or vinyl, “Beautiful Day”), Now That’s What I Call Legendary (4xCD, “With or Without You”), Now Yearbook ’92 (CD or vinyl, “ EBTTRT ” (The Perfecto Remix)”), ‘90s Movie Hits Collected (Yellow vinyl, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me”), New Wave of the ’80s Collected (Turquoise vinyl, “11 O’Clock Tick Tock”), and Fetenhits – The Real ’90s (CD or vinyl, “Discotheque”). Additionally the compilations Now Yearbook ’83 (“New Year’s Day), Now Yearbook ’84 (“Pride (In the Name of Love)” were both reissued in 2023 on vinyl.

Sphere and Other Shows

The big news for U2 throughout the year was Sphere, and the 40 shows they will play there. We covered those in an article earlier this week. Other live highlights this year were performances by Bono and The Edge, performing onstage with Antilya in London. The group is a Ukrainian based group, who Bono and The Edge had previously performed with in Ukraine last year. Bono and The Edge also made an appearance on Piano Room , playing Abba’s “S.O.S.” as well as their own music, and they also made a promotional appearance on the Tiny Desk Concerts series. Bono’s “Stories of Surrender” tour picked up again in April with a residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York, and a performance in Italy at the end of the run. The final performances at the Beacon were filmed, as was the Italian show , and those are expected to be released in 2024 to Apple’s iTunes. Portions of the show were filmed with new technology, which will allow an immersive experience when viewing using the new Apple glasses, so we expect that this will be released at the same time those glasses hit the market. You’ll be able to watch the show without that technology, but if you do own it, it will add additional views to watch the show.

Songs of Surrender was released in March, and included a wide variety of promotion for the album. One of our favourite, was the “ 40 Songs, 40 Cities “ promotion, which saw U2 set up geo-locations at 40 cities around the world. At each location one found a mural or a poster, or some other advertising for the album featuring a lyric from one of the 40 songs included on the album. And if you were at one of those locations you unlocked a special merchandise offer via U2.com. It was a fun hunt to locate these around the world. (The location in Germany offered goodie bags, while Toronto offered coasters for the event.) Another fun promotion was done via Spotify , where they updated the video for each song title on the album. U2’s way of announcing the track listing of the album in advance of the full announcement. They also did a series of 40 letters to fans across the globe to announced the album, which started arriving a few days before the official announcement. One promotional exercise was heavily criticized by fans, as U2 released multiple versions on coloured vinyl, sometimes limited in quantities, and almost always restricted in geographical availability. Thankfully the hunt was small compared to what some artists have done.

U2 also announced gifts for both 2023 and 2024 in their subscription package to U2.com. Two lyric books are being produced, containing the complete U2 lyrics, and will include images and other content. Although these were announced early in the year, it looks like U2.com will miss starting to ship the fan club gift in or before the year that it is for for the first time ever. As we write this it is December 31, and no shipping notifications have been sent to date. All that has been sent is a confusing request to “redeem” your gift which isn’t working for many subscribers. Looks like the 2023 gift will ship in 2024. Lets hope the 2024 book is underway already and will come out early.

One of the bigger items this year was the launch of Zoo Station in Las Vegas, a special pop-up space over two floors dedicated to U2. The space is 12,000 ft-squared over the two floors. The exhibition is curated by Gavin Friday and presented by Vibee, who are doing the VIP packages for the Sphere shows. The first floor space features an Anton Corbijn gallery of photos as you enter, which change over time. On your right you’ll find a Trabant surrounded by a wall of TVs, you can sit in and by pressing pedals and buttons can hear “So Cruel”. Toward the back of the exhibit is a B-stage, where you can pose with friends and instruments to make your own band photo. To the left is a photo booth with Zoo TV era icons, in a replica of a Berlin train car. In the centre is the Satellite of Love display allowing you to send messages home to loved ones, and there’s an extensive shop on the first floor as well. On the second floor is a large open space called the Ultra Violet Lounge. There is a bar to one side called The Fly Bar with a “paintable” Trabant and video displays, and there’s a smaller U2 merchandise stand in the space. Also present on the second floor is the Zoo TV Cinema.

The Cinema features a ticketed film experience. All of the films being shown are curated by The Edge and all have been remastered in sound to playback in Dolby Atmos sound. The films are showing in 4K, and those not natively at that size have been upscaled and mastered at this higher resolution for the best version of these films. Although many of the films have been released over the years, this Zoo TV Cinema is the only place you can see and hear these films in this quality. And there are a few items which haven’t been released to the home market, such as the 2009 Somerville promotional concert, and the LoveTown documentary. We’re hearing that the films will eventually pop up on a streaming service going forward, but Zoo Station is the only place showing these currently. Zoo Station reopens on January 29 and closes for good on March 2.

The full list of films shown so far is as follows:

Another film debuting this year (not at Zoo Station) was Kiss the Future a film by director Nenad Cicin-sain, produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The film debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2023, and later showed at the Tribeca Film Festival (August 2023), the Sarajevo Film Festival (August 2023), the Busan International Film Festival (October 2023) and the Tucson Film Festival (November 2023.) The film was still seeking distribution at the earlier festivals, and has not been widely released.

The director describes the film as “a cautionary tale about how politicians divided a country and lead its people into a horrific civil war and how music brought them back together for one night.” The film focuses on the struggles of Sarajevo residents during the Bosnian war, and how aid worker and filmmaker Bill Carter brought the struggle to U2, and got U2 to Sarajevo. Bono shares, “It’s also about the role art can play in uplifting the souls of people living under such a threat.” The filmmakers worked with longtime U2 collaborator, Ned O’Hanlon, and while they did not have any video footage of the Sarajevo concert in 1997, they were provided audio stems of that performance including Bono’s isolated vocal, and isolated drum, guitar and crowd noise, which U2’s team remixed for the documentary. The film also contains new interviews with Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton.

A few other things that may be of interest? Early in the year a new set of U2 Funko Pop’s was announced. This time it’s all four in an album display, with the band’s outfits and poses taking inspiration from a promotional poster for the Pop album. Although Surrender , Bono’s book was a 2022 release, some foreign editions didn’t come out until 2023, with new copies being released in Romania, Hungary and Greece this year in local languages. Longtime collaborator, graphic designer Steve Averill debuted a U2-themed podcast this year with his son Gareth. It’s a great listen, and is called U2-Y . And while we’ve had the soundtrack to Angelheaded Hipster for a few years now, the film finally debuted this year, featuring footage of U2 recording their contribution to the album. It was released in theatres in the UK for one night in September, and has been followed by release on streaming services and Blu-ray/DVD in November.

Studio Videos:

“Atomic City” was the big one this year, with Larry Mullen joining in the filming in Las Vegas, and even appearing on stage at Sphere in the video itself. Two lyric videos were also featured, one featuring the Songs of Surrender version of “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, and the other for the Zooropa version of “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)”. A fourth video, called a “Visualiser” consists of the Songs of Surrender version of the song, with a still image of the album cover.

U2 continue to provide content to U2 X-Radio, a station on the subscription services SiriusXM, available in North America. This year the only band member to have a regular show was Adam Clayton, who continues to do playlists for the station. This included playlists focused on Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite; a special year end playlist focused on Achtung Baby , and playlists focused on the desert, Irish Music, and more.

The band used the station to promote the Songs of Surrender album, with a special on the station with Bill Flanagan interviewing Bono and the Edge, and another special where Adam Clayton and The Edge went through the album track by track. The promotions spread to other channels as well and The Edge was interviewed by Lori Majeweski on First Wave, and also appeared on The Writers Block with David Fricke.

After three years as resident remixer and DJ, Paul Oakenfold did his last Discotheque on June 30, 2023 almost exactly three years after his first show. The program continues, however, and in October, Pauli the PSM , Atomic MC took over the Friday night show, mixing his own favourites each week. Pauli the PSM is also appearing each night as the opening act at Sphere, and was the focus of one of Gavin Friday’s shows from Las Vegas. Gavin also introduced Bram Van den Berg to U2 fans via the station, and throughout the opening weekend there was live coverage and interviews with fans from Las Vegas on the station.

Other specials this year included a 40th anniversary of War special with Adam Clayton looking back on that album, a Record Store Day Special celebrating the 40th anniversary of “Two Hearts Beat As One” and a 30th anniversary of Zooropa set of specials, one going through the album track-by-track, while the other saw The Edge and Adam Clayton discussing the album. In May, U2 X-Radio took votes from fans for the “U2 of the ’90s Countdown”, and the DJs also did a look back at the year 2023 at the end of the year.

In July, the station also featured a short program looking back at Sinead O’Connor’s work with U2. It included her singing “ Heroine “ with The Edge and Larry Mullen, “ You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart “ which had been co-written by Bono for the film In the Name of the Father , and finished with “ I’m Not Your Baby “.

Site Updates

Much of our time has been spent this year covering the Las Vegas shows at Sphere and Bono’s Stories of Surrender shows. For those who have enjoyed our nightly show summaries in the Show Archive, we’ve also been spending some time working on these for other tours. We’ve recently updated our entire U2360° tour archive with nightly write ups. And the first leg of Innocence and Experience is also complete. As time permits we’ll continue to work on others. (Hint: A lot of the early Boy shows are done as well.)

We’ve also recently added in information to our show entries detailing ticket sales, pricing and attendance. Look for these new bits of information throughout the show archive. We’ve also continued to go back and research older shows. We’ve added dozens of show entries over the last year, most not included in other archives at the time. You can see a sampling of some of these here . We’ve also added a section tracking U2’s festival appearances , both as a full band and solo.

Over on the lyrics side of things we added a few additional ways to look around U2’s songs. We have sections for songs that U2 have covered , as well as songs that the band have covered as solo performers outside the band . You can also look for spoken word tracks, and instrumental songs .

This year we added two new pieces looking at the work outside of U2 by various producers. The 5 Albums series now includes a look at Bob Ezrin , and another five albums from Jacknife Lee .

We’ve linked to a number of discography entries throughout this article, so we won’t repeat those here, but we also added a number of items to the page that didn’t get as much fan fare. A look at some of those items are in the list below:

  • “ The Joshua Tree Celebrating 30 Years 1987-2017 “ Promotional Release – U2
  • “ RFI Musique: Europodium “ Promotional Release – Various Artists
  • “ The U2 File “ Promotional Release – U2
  • “ 50 Years of the Greatest Hit Singles “ Compilation Album – Various Artists
  • “ Best of Friends “ Album – Jools Holland
  • “ The Blues Experience “ Compilation Album – Various Artists

We’ve recently reviewed 1200 U2 and U2-related tracks, and identified a number of unique edits of material that we will be adding over the coming months. We’ve also added 369 new images to the discography over the last twelve months. We continue to update the discography daily.

We’ve also expanded our social media offerings, and site updates are now posted to Threads (u2songscom) and Bluesky (u2songs) as well as our usual Facebook (U2songs) and Twitter (U2Songs).

This year’s review is the fifth in a series of year end reviews we have done since 2018. For a look back at the earlier years, please check out our stories below:

Après des concerts à l’Accor Arena de Paris en septembre 2018, U2 devrait assurer une nouvelle tournée mondiale en 2024.

Après la publication en novembre 2022 de Surrender , les mémoires de Bono, U2 a fait son grand retour en musique en 2023. Le groupe a en effet sorti son nouvel album Songs of Surrender au mois de mars, mettant fin à de longs mois d’absence. Celui-ci succède à Songs of Experience (2017), qui avait accouché des singles You’re the Best Thing About Me et Get Out of Your Own Way , ainsi qu’à la chanson Your Song Saved My Life (2021), B.O. du film Tous en scène 2 .

U2 , one of the most famous rock bands in the world. They will debut the most cutting-edge arena in the world, Sphere, at The Venetian in Las Vegas, US, in a groundbreaking live music event.

U2 Announce 2023 Tour Dates

Before starting to give information about U2 2023 tour dates, they have no concerts in 2022 from this time. For this year, U2 returned to the stage for the first time after the 2022 tour. One year ago, they were mostly played for the festivals.

Will U2 tour in 2023?

Yes, U2 will tour in 2023.

U2’s present residence at the Sphere at the Venetian Resort in Paradise, Nevada, in the Las Vegas Valley is known as U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere. The engagement, expected to last 25 concerts and run from September 29 to December 16, 2023, will officially open the Sphere with performances centered around the band’s 1991 album Achtung Baby.

The performances use the space’s sonic and visual immersion features, including a wraparound interior LED screen with a 16K resolution, beamforming and wave field synthesis speakers, and 4D physical effects.

Since Larry Mullen Jr. will heal from surgery, U2 will not participate in the concert series; Dutch drummer Bram van den Berg from Krezip will step in. This is the first time since 1978 that the band has done so.

The engagement was first reported in July 2022 and confirmed in February 2023 in a Super Bowl LVII television commercial, with tickets going on sale in April and May. U2 released a song named “Atomic City” with a Las Vegas theme to coincide with the beginning of their residency.

The concert’s opening act is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, Pauli “the PSM” Lovejoy, in the UK. They play DJ music before the show while driving around the general admission area in a neon Trabant.

U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere 2023 tour poster

Here is the press statement for the “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere” 2023 tour:

U2 have always – since their earliest days, including the industry-defining ZOO TV Tour which broke the mold in 1991 – pushed the boundaries of live performance, with ground-breaking stage shows that embrace the latest in technology and innovation. The news that the band will launch the Sphere, the state-of-the art venue currently dominating the Las Vegas skyline, is fitting for a show from the world’s most thrilling live band.

The announcement comes with confirmation that Larry will take time out to undergo and recuperate from surgery in 2023. These Las Vegas shows will see Larry and the band welcome drummer Bram van den Berg who will be sitting in to join Bono, The Edge and Adam onstage at the Sphere.

The Sphere show has been in the works for a long time. We don’t want to let people down, least of all our audience… the truth is we miss them as much as they appear to miss us… our audience was always the fifth member of the band. Bottom line, U2 hasn’t played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again.

And what a unique stage they’re building for us out there in the desert… We’re the right band, Achtung Baby the right album, and the Sphere the right venue to take the live experience of music to the next level… That’s what U2’s been trying to do all along with our satellite stages and video installations, most memorably on the ZOO TV Tour, which ended in Tokyo 30 years ago this Fall.

The Sphere is more than just a venue, it’s a gallery and U2’s music is going to be all over the walls.”

Bono, and Adam talked about the tour:

“It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg who is a force in his own right.

The Edge also added:

“The beauty of the Sphere is not only the ground-breaking technology that will make it so unique, with the world’s most advanced audio system, integrated into a structure which is designed with sound quality as a priority; it’s also the possibilities around immersive experience in real and imaginary landscapes.

In short, it’s a canvas of unparalleled scale and image resolution and a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We all thought about it and decided we’d be mad not to accept the invitation.”

U2 (formed in 1976) is a highly-successful Irish rock band, formed of Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton, hailing from Dublin, Ireland.

Formed in 1976 after Larry Mullen, Jr. posted an advertisement on the bulletin board at Dublin’s Mount Temple Comprehensive, the band soon began practicing regularly and exploring their musical interests. Initially performing under the moniker The Hype before switching to the name of an American spy plane, the band’s popularity grew in Ireland through a string of independent releases.

The band signed to Isalnd Records and released their debut full-length “Boy” in 1980, followed the year after with the LP “October”. Thanks to American radio play and notoriously impressive live shows, U2 soon made name for themselves a procured a swelling fan base. U2’s subsequent release “War” in 1983 highlighted and cemented the band’s political conscious approach, documenting the unrest in Northern Ireland. The album which debuted at No. 1 on the British chart, spawned the politically-apt singles “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day”. Following another whirlwind worldwide tour in 1983 U2 released the live EP “Under a Blood Red Sky” recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, U.S.

U2 went on to release “The Unforgettable Fire” in 1984, the fruit of a collaboration with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, despite Island Records’ reluctance. Again the band supported the release with historic arena performances including Live Aid and were even named Rolling Stone’s “Band of the ‘80s”.

By the mid-1980s U2 had become highly revered musicians, however did not become rock superstars until their 1987 album “The Joshua Tree”. It became the band’s first No. 1 U.S. hit and their third consecutive UK album to reach the top spot, certified platinum within 28 hours. The album’s success was due in part to the smash hits “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. Following the release the band explored their fascination with American roots music including blues, soul and folk and delivered the album “Rattle & Hum” in 1988.

The ‘90s brought a novel-sounding U2 and a collection of albums to boot including 1990’s “Achtung Baby”, the Bowie inspired dance and electronic album, “Zooropa” the 1993 techno dance influenced album, and the collaborative album “Original Soundtracks, Vol. 1” with Brian Eno in 1995. The same year U2 renewed their contract with Island Records for an estimated $170 million.

Fan disgruntlement at U2’s new self-conscious, postmodern and dance approach did little to alter the outcome of their subsequent album “Pop”, and ultimately became fan’s least favourite album. With such criticism the band teamed up again with Eno and Lanois in 2000 to record and release “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”. The album was a rock effort and considered one of their best, led by the singles “Beautiful Day” and “Walk On”.

The band followed the release up with the No. 1 album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” in 2004, which led to the second highest grossing tour ever with $389 million. U2’s twelfth studio album “No Line on the Horizon” arrived in 2009, followed by "Songs of Innocence" in 2014, downloaded automatically to users of apple products.

U2 have sold more than 150 million records worldwide, have been awarded 22 Grammy Awards, have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility and are ranked by Rolling Stone 22nd on their list of “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.

Live reviews

What makes a U2 concert so special? What is it about a U2 show that compels us to travel hundreds and thousands of miles to see virtually the same concert over and over?

A U2 show is more than just the songs in the concert. It is the feeling you get when you hear those songs. Whether they lift you up or remind you of a special time in your life, either way, the feeling you get when you hear U2 songs is euphoric. But a U2 concert is more than just those euphoric songs that are played. It is 80,000 people singing those songs together. The fact that each person at that show is feeling the exact same excitement you are. It is a sense of community and belonging. More than just the U2 concert itself, it is the whole experience. The traveling and hanging out with fellow U2 fans. The day of the U2 concert is a great time for U2 fellowship since we arrive at the stadium in the early afternoon either to line up in the GA (general admission) line or to wait for Bono, Larry, Edge and Adam to arrive. With many hours to kill before the concert begins, U2 fans share their U2 experiences, such as favorite songs, albums and concerts.

My favorite U2 concert, of the 75 I have seen, was on the Elevation Tour in Providence, Rhode Island on October 31, 2001. It was my favorite U2 member's 40th birthday, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. It was the night Larry and I shared a drink. The morning of the show, I woke up outside around 8am – pretty good sleeping outside in 30 degrees for five hours. I went up to the warm hotel room until about 10am, then had some breakfast. I stayed in the GA line all day without leaving, except to take a shower around 3:30. I got everyone in the GA line to sign the big orange birthday card I made for Larry. I put my name and email address on the back just in case. The band didn’t arrive until after we were inside. Wearing our Larry Mullen Band shirts, we got our spots at the rail up front and center between Bono and Adam.

I held up my birthday card for Larry as they walked on stage, but he didn’t notice it. There were many, many signs including one saying, ‘Bono let Larry sing.’ During Elevation, Bono sang, ‘ Celebration’ then said, ‘Happy Birthday.' After "Stuck in a Moment," Larry’s 40th birthday celebration began. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Larry. A birthday cake was brought out, and Larry pretended to throw it out into the audience. Larry took the mic and came to the front to talk while Bono sat behind the drums. Larry said, "Bono can’t play drums. It took me 40 years to get up front. I’m glad I’m spending my birthday with 18,000 of my closest friends. I feel like I could borrow money from you." Then Bono asked for a bottle of champagne, which he shook up a la ZooTV and sprayed the audience. Edge took a swig, then Larry drank and continued to drink for the next few songs.

After "Kite," Larry got off the drums and made a B line for me. I got my card and shirt in hand so I could give it to him, but that’s not why he was there. He gave me the champagne bottle – with champagne still in it. I drank some and shared it with my friends. Larry wanted to share his birthday with ME! He wanted ME to have a drink on his birthday. I was SO excited I didn’t even realize they played "Wild Honey," which they rarely play. After "Pride," Larry came back over to me so I could give him the birthday card and Elvis tee shirt. I said, "Thank you. Happy Birthday." He smiled and said, "Thank You." Later on, Bono noticed our Larry Mullen Band shirts, shook his head and smiled.

I doubt there will ever be another U2 show like that night in Providence. Granted it was Larry’s 40th Birthday, and I love Larry, but also for the rarities U2 played that night. "Slow Dancing" was played for the first time on the Elevation tour, and only the 11th time ever. "Party Girl" and "Wild Honey" were played for the first time on that leg of Elevation – and I’ve only heard those songs a couple of times ever. There was just a great energy in Providence that night. I still have that champagne bottle that Larry gave me on his 40th birthday.

...............................................

Good Morning,

I accompany the band since 1985, in the days of long or compact disc and my first album, the first record I bought was "War". I have always known the social and political position of the group, I think it is what caught my attention and captivated me from the beginning. But here in Brazil, we live in difficult times, of belligerence and intolerance of diverse forms, racial, social, and religious. An apolitical society, but that bases its beliefs on what the local press determines.

I think this is the best Tour I've been on, seeing it as my second time at a U2 show. I was in Vertigo in 2006 and even going through a delicate time, since I was taking medication for panic syndrome and depression, I left the stadium 90% better than when I arrived.

The current tour is one of the best, if not the best, as well as the group's album and if it could go in all, fantastic Setilist, minimalist lighting and stage and referring to a simplicity of the beginning of the bands shows. Congratulations and many more ........

Let me begin with, "U2 is the greatest band in the universe!" I have a strong connection with the band as the Joshua Tree tour was the first concert I ever attended back in 1987. 28 years later, they are still the best live band. I have been very fortunate to have seen them for most of their tours, Elevation, Vertigo, 360 and now ie. I was a broke college student during Zoo and PopMart.

U2 has a very loyal fan base. You will meet people that have seen 50-400 of their concerts. I am fortunate to have seen them 4x already during this tour.

The live experience during the ie tour is very personal and intimate. Bono shows such strong emotion during Iris which makes you want to cry. I heard Out Of Control at the 2nd Phoenix show and I had tears of joy rolling down my cheeks as that was the one song I have been waiting to hear since Elevation. LA 4th show they played 40 which made me cry......."How Long To Sing This Song......." Such a great tribute to the late Dennis Sheehan. Bono is the perfect frontman, always introducing the band as if we are meeting them for the first time. (Brandon Flowers never introduces the other Killers) Bono always has crowd interaction from shaking hands, kissing women's hands, bringing up a lucky fan for the Meerkat live stream and singing to a lucky fan (like me during Beautiful Day in the 2nd night Phoenix show) I'm still on cloud 9!!! Larry, The Edge and Adam also interact with the crowd. I know first hand as I got an air kiss from Adam. The Edge smiled at my friend. Larry shakes hands with people at the e stage.

I can go on and on how U2 is the perfect band. No other bands compare to them. What band has loyal fans waiting all night thru rain and hail to see them? What band always mentions how they tour for the music and the fans?? I sure don't think they need the money.

I will continue to see them until they tour no more. I ❤️ U2

Great show, very basic staging, which is a nice change of pace for U2 recently. It allowed you to focus on them as a band, 4 guys playing music together.

As a tour kick off, there will be some glitches and bugs, the worst of which is when The band and Bono totally flubbed the entire song With or Without You!!! The band was out of sync right from the start and that must have rattled Bono because he false started the first verse, got the lyrics wrong, then just stood there silent while the crowd sort of tried to chime in with the vocals. It was actually pretty awkward, and Bono didn't acknowledge it except by saying "you guys can sing this one".

It was so great to see them actually play Joshua Tree straight through, track by track. I wasn't sure that's how it would really play out. As an album about the greatness, and hardships, of America, with inspiration from American music, landscapes, and especially politics, there was no way to get through the set without nods (mostly subtle - for U2) to the current leadership in America. The opening 8-9 songs before actually launching into Joshua Tree were pretty telling about the bands politics and values of freedom, truth, and fulfilling the American dream. The fact that opening night coincidentally fell on the 60th anniversary of the Martin Luther King "Give Us the Vote" speech gave more weight to lyrics referencing King's assassination in "Pride (In the Name of Love)".

Finally, totally unrelated to Songkick or U2, but I have to say how HORRIBLE Levi's Stadium is and the whole process of getting there (unmanaged traffic), getting into the venue (no purses bigger than a cell phone allowed and no mention of that fact anywhere), getting food (seemed like only 25 people trying to sell hot dogs to 50,000!). Will never see another show there again no matter who the act is.

This show needed to start and finish in darkness to concentrate the mind on the amazing imagery and truly iconic music.

The lead in through tracks from Unforgettable Fire set the pace and raised the pulse rate to a crescendo at the onset of Where The Streets Have No Name where it remained at rates which would have set off many a hospital vital signs alarm until the end of the a play through of the entire Joshua Tree album.

Had this concert finished there it would have sad to depart - and U2 knew this so included a further array of some of their finest tracks from the last 30 years.

This was the trickiest period of the gig however, as not all of the next 35 - 40 minutes could match the standard set down by some of the best music of the 20th century. Moments of oddness crept in, as is Bono's way, and momentum was lost - not gained - towards the end.

Ultimately, an incredible visionary onslaught and a truly mammoth rendition of One lifted the gig back to the heights of its earlier euphoria.

This could easily have been the best concert I have ever seen, but on balance it dropped short. I would not have missed this for the world and I am sure I will look back in years to come and feel so pleased that I was there and saw what was a true moment in musical history. As it stands right now I have a mixed emotion... but there is no denying that of the many hundreds of concerts I have been to in the last 40 years this was right up there at the very pinnacle - a top ten bucket list moment.

U2 at Arrowhead Stadium in KC was a musical memory I'll put in my Top 10...so far. We got parking lot passes from Ticketmaster beforehand to save $$ & make navigating the throngs of traffic manageble. We got to the lot about 5:30 p.m. People had been there tailgating & the lot attendants were very organized, flagging us in to our spot. We immediately headed in to the Stadium so we could check out the U2 merchandise. Entering was a breeze, even with security, because we had checked online to see what could or couldn't be taken into the Stadium. The restrictions make lines move much quicker, even with entering through metal detectors. Walking up the ramp to our seat level was easy. U2 had merchandise areas set up at more locations, so lines there were less. The concession places had very friendly attendants. The stadium seats were very comfortable. Security was there in abundance & were also helpful & friendly. Concert acoustics for an open stadium were amazing. The only downside was the placement of the

audio towers or whatever they were, but they were necessary to provide the incredible U2 audio & visual experience. After the concert, we waited for an hour on purpose before exiting to avoid sitting in traffic, idling. Again, smooth exit. So I highly recommend seeing U2 for their musical talent, their political message & celebrating the 4th anniversary of the Joshua Tree album. ENJOY!

U2 are a band who have conquered the globe and are considered iconic by fans of most genres. With such staggering reputation it is obviously quite difficult to form a live show of equal stature. Luckily, Bono and co obtain a form of bravado that is required of any iconic band.

The key component of their gigs is that they understand how important and dear the audience hold tracks such as 'With Or Without You' and the intense sincerity in which they perform could not be more appropriate. There is an ethereal state when thousands upon thousands are singing along to 'The Streets Have No Name' whilst four musicians command the entire crowd.

There is no denying Bono performs with the same level of self-assuredness that he conducts himself in daily life yet when the opening bars of 'Pride' begin, this level of bombast is required to tackle these gargantuan anthems. They have an impossible amount of hits to choose from, yet the setlist feels well calculated and not simply a 'greatest hits' compilation. The use of snippets of their own music and classics by the likes of Bowie turned their gig from a concert into a musical celebration.

The concert was awesome but the venue was absolute crap!!!!! Paid $264.00 x 2 & a tower was blocking the view depending where the band was standing on the stage. So view blocked. Support act Noel Gallagher couldn’t hear him speak, don’t know what he was saying & sound not too good at all.

U2 came on & could hardly see them. GA would have been better & cheaper & from what Ive heard, they had the best place to hear.

SCG is not a good venue for a concert & we were so totally disappointed with what we paid, seating & going to ground & trying so squeeze through the line ups for toilets & good to get to the Merchandise shop. Then trying to get back up to level 5.

Please never put a concert there again, unless you our stage in centre, so everyone can see. You shouldn’t charge extreme prices for crap seating.

U2 was awesome as always but couldn’t always see them & at times hear them, the sound got better as the night went on.

Definitely very disappointed with SCG

Amazing concert as always. Lot of security at the entrances so it was a little bit slow everything and I was afraid because maybe I couldn't watch Noel Gallagher but organization was clever and started one hour later more or less. Really it was very difficult to be there at 19 with that security level. But everything was perfect. Noel played lot of Oasis songs with classics like Wonderwall, Little by Little or Don't Look Back in Anger. Then with less than 20 minutes delay, U2 came on stage. Larry Mullen started alone in the middle of the scenario situated at the center of the stadium and it all began... Thanks for allow us to remember a great album like Joshua Tree! All the songs in order, side A and side B if you like more the vinyl. And the last part... Amazing with songs like Elevation or Vertigo. And one last surprise... We could listen a new song from the upcoming album, Songs of Experience. No more to say: GREAT AS ALWAYS U2. We love you!

Best concert I've ever seen and probably will ever see save for another U2 show. No seat was a bad seat as they had a massive 'screen' that spanned roughly half the length and a third of the height of MSG. The screen could be lowered and raised and there was a catwalk inside of it as well as under it on the floor for the band members to move around on. Animations and live videos of the band members playing were projected onto the screen and could be interacted with inside of the screen. I've never seen anything like it.

They had a great mix of classic U2 songs and new ones all while using mixed media to create much more than a music concert. This was a retrospective art show, film screening, advocacy platform, etc. A final treat was Bruce Springsteen coming on near the end of the show trading mics with Bono to sing Where the Streets Have No Name. You have got to see this band live.

U2 iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris BLU-RAY, DVD and DOWNLOAD

U2 iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris will be released worldwide on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on Friday 10th June. Watch the trailer and pre-order below.

The concert film captures the groundbreaking tour as it returned to the French capital in December.  The New York Times put it like this:  " The Paris show that concluded U2's Innocence and Experience tour was concert as personal memoir, archetypal story, prayer, exorcism and vow of unity. "

The 2.5 hour film, directed by Hamish Hamilton , includes guest performances by Eagles of Death Metal and, on the deluxe version, by Patti Smith , which also features behind-the-scenes footage, additional music videos and live tracks and a tour of the visuals narrated by the band's lifelong friend Gavin Friday .

"Directing iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE was scary," says live broadcast director Hamish Hamilton who previously worked with U2 on 2001's Elevation Tour. "A technical nightmare married with a creative rollercoaster. It challenged everything I knew on so many levels...What blew my mind were the multiple narrative arcs combined with the number of emotional arcs you are taken through as you journey through the show. There's a lot of good shows out there - but very few great shows."

U2's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour kicked off in Vancouver in May 2015 and, to date, has played to over 1.2 million fans in 22 cities across Europe and North America. Staged in the round, the tour features multiple performance areas plus a state of the art 100 foot LED screen suspended above a 118 foot walkway running the length of the arena floor. Combined with an innovative suspended sound system, the tour has delivered mindblowing sound and visuals from every seat in every venue. As Rolling Stone put it, "U2 reinvent the arena show."     From 'Songs of Innocence' musical highlights include "Cedarwood Road" , "Song for Someone" and the stripped down live version of "Every Breaking Wave" . Career-spanning staples include ' "I Will Follow", "Pride (In the Name of Love)", "Vertigo", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Until The End of the World", "Beautiful Day" and "Where The Streets Have No Name" .

U2 iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris is released on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download. The Standard DVD features 30 tracks (see listing below), the Deluxe DVD and Blu-ray formats come with bonus material including Gavin Friday’s guide to "Cedarwood Road", a behind-the-scenes piece with director director Hamish Hamilton’s behind-the-scenes documentary, on-stage tour videos for "The Wanderer" and "The Troubles" as well as six music videos commissioned for single releases from Songs of Innocence. Highlights of the Super Deluxe Box collection include all of the above as well as an exclusive USB lightbulb, a 64-Page Hardback Book, Dog Tags, Stencil Set, Pin Badges and a special code to download the video of the entire show. Full details below.
