Virgin Voyages Shopping on Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages Shopping on Scarlet Lady: What stores are onboard?

Some people love going on cruises because of the shopping, and fear not, we are here to tell you all the shopping options available on Virgin Voyages, more specifically, the Scarlet Lady.

Virgin is not like other cruise lines that offer daily deals for shopping, with different  departments going on sale. Instead, the price you see is what you get all the time on the cruise.

If you find an item you like, then go get it. If it’s sold out a few days later, the item may not get replenished until after your cruise.

This is a part of our Virgin Voyages post series.

Our Virgin Voyages Cruise Series – the Ultimate Guides

Our other cruise travel series, virgin voyages shopping options , dry dock, stubble and groom & the tune up, mac cosmetics , alcohol shop.

Unlike some of the bigger cruise lines where the shops are multiple floors on the ship, there’s only one designated area on the Scarlet Lady called the High Street.

Patterned after high street shops in the UK, the stores are designed to face the corridor, so you can browse easily. There are only a few actual shops, which we discuss below.

Display from Virgin Voyages Shop

The first and only tattoo parlor onboard a cruise ship is located here. Apparently, the concept is so popular that you have to reserve in advance in order to get a tattoo onboard.

Prices differ depending if you want a customized tattoo or if you select a premade pattern. You can book a reservation through the app but there is a non-refundable deposit of $150. Now, we have never had tattoos before but isn’t $150 for a tattoo pretty expensive?

If you need to get dolled up for Scarlet Night or have an occasion to celebrate onboard, the ship has its own salon called the Dry Dock and is located on the high street area (deck 6). You can get your hair done, or get them to do your makeup.

Have a nail emergency? The Tune Up available for any manicure/pedicure needs. There’s even a barbershop onboard for the men called Stubble and Groom.

The space for these salons are tiny, with only 5 spots or less for the salon, so it does get busy for a few hours before Scarlet Night. You can also make reservations on the app if you need to get a spot in.

Forgot your makeup on land and need replacements to use onboard? Fear not, there is a MAC Cosmetics shop onboard. The prices are comparable to land prices, but they don’t carry the land exclusives.

If you are a fan of paint pots, the shop does not carry them either! So much for saving a few dollars on taxes by picking one up from the ship!

The shop does makeovers upon request and seminars throughout the sailing, but space is limited so show up early. These spots are standing room only.

The Spirits for sale at Virgin Voyages

What cruise ship is there without an alcohol shop onboard? My husband and I checked it out and they have a limited selection of alcohol and spirits, but the prices are $5 cheaper than land prices.

They also carry British brands that you may not often get in specialty shops like Total Wine. Perfect for those who want to bring home some unique spirits for their home bars.

Various Branded Items

There’s a jewelry store, high end bags, cosmetics, shoes, and clothing available throughout a few different shop fronts and they cater to different types of goods.

Prices are high since these are luxury goods, and sizes and design selections are not readily available. I think that overall, the prices are cheaper than on land since you save on taxes, but not sure if the ship carries the latest fashions/collection if that is your sort of thing.

We skipped browsing these stores since we do not really like branded items. We do try to live frugally as part of our pursuit for financial independence.

Virgin Voyages Brand Store on the Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages Brand Store

The most popular store on the ship is the Virgin Voyages brand store. Here, you can get a lot of branded Virgin Voyages items. This shop has the perfect souvenir that you can take home from your cruise.

Our personal favorites are the rubber ships of Scarlet Lady ($12 each and comes in gray and in red), the Octopus notebook ($12) and a Scarlet Lady coaster ($6).

You can get t-shirts, bags, and other branded merchandise from this store. What other store would you want? True enough, there’s always more people in this store compared to the others. The prices are not so bad, and it is a good way to remember your trip.

Forgot your sunscreen? Toothpaste? Deodorant? The Essentials have it all. Of course the prices are more expensive than what you would get from land but in a pinch, this store comes in handy.

There was someone on our ship whose airline lost his bag and he needed to get a whole load of items from the store. He did manage to get the basic necessities, although not as many selections as on land. You can opt to get stuff from CVS, Walgreens, and even grocery stores on land. There’s a Whole Foods within a 10 minute car ride from the ship docks that you can Uber to if you still have time.

There is a very small selection of books available at the Essentials so try to bring your own reading material when you go on the ship. This shop is also the place to get the Never Sleep Alone companion book. Watch the show! Read more about the entertainment options on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady.

Then again, would you even need physical books if you have free WiFi on the ship?

Not sure what the name of the store is, but it specializes in higher end items like toys, clothing, accessories, and shoes.

The store hours vary and the stuffed toy prices (if you’re a collector, like I am) are a bit steep – at around $20 per item for a tiny toy! You can also get Alex and Ani jewelry from the store, and a few higher end purses, clothing, and shoes.

This ship is along the corridor on Deck 7 on the way to the Dock House so you won’t miss it! Still a good place to browse, I would say.

We thought that the record store would hold a big variety of items but nah. There’s only a small rock section, very little pop, and less than 30 titles onboard. You can listen to some of the records while onboard.

The hours vary but if there’s a DJ playing, chances are, the store is open. Located in Deck 7, near the Roundabout area of the ship. This is one of the first stores you will see when you embark on the ship for the first time from Miami.

There is a special edition vinyl which is only available on the Scarlet Lady. The vinyl itself is red, compared to black on most vinyls, and costs $70! Forgot which band and album it’s about but I found it really expensive!

Virgin Voyages Shopping on Scarlet Lady

Are you going to shop in any of the Scarlet Lady/Virgin Voyages stores?

You can use your bracelet to pay for anything onboard and if you have Sailor Loot, these items will automatically be deducted from your balance. No need to worry about paying per individual transaction, everything will be listed on your final bill before you disembark.

I just realized we didn’t take many photos of the shops while we were onboard since we didn’t spend too much time in them. Oh well, will take more photos and update the post the next time we go onboard in Dec 2022.

Hopefully this post helped you plan which stores you will hit when you get onboard. Which one is your favorite store so far?

I’m enjoying these articles, thank you! $150 is really cheap for a tattoo, and what they aren’t public about is that Squid Ink is in partnership with high end shops and tattoo artists that would charge wayyyy more in NYC or London.

Thanks for your comment! I thought $150 was expensive for a tattoo lol! Maybe that’s for the minimum. I could ask for quotes when I go back on my cruise in September.

I’m wondering if it’s at all possible to buy the sex Pistols red vinyl album that is being sold in your shop ?

I am fully aware that it ‘s $70 but I guess seeing as you are only selling it on your ship, i may as well ask.

Hope to hear from you soon, Tim.

Hiya, We don’t have a shop and I’m not sure where else Virgin sells the exclusive red vinyl album aside from onboard the ship. We are going back to sail in a week and the next one in Dec 2022 so can keep a look out if it’s still available!

Cruising in 2023 but couldn’t snag a suite. Can you buy the rock star robes on board?

You can ask your room attendant if they allow you to buy those. When the octopus rubber ducky were only available to the rock star suites, I asked our room attendant if he can secure it for us even though we were not staying at a suite. He just charged our room the amount of the duck.

Virgin Voyages Cruise, Jennifer Lopez

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, The Hollywood Reporter may receive an affiliate commission.

The summer season is in full swing, and with it, the return of international travel, especially following the hiatus of trips abroad due to the pandemic. And while a relaxing stay at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or city hopping around Europe might be calling your name, Cruise Critic reports that booking demand for cruises all around the world is higher than ever — especially on cruise lines that offer unique experiences, like a stay at a cruise line’s private island.

Virgin Voyages ships currently set sail in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and the Greek Cyclades out of hubs like Miami, Barcelona, and Athens, and they plan to expand to the South Pacific (out of Melbourne or Sydney) and transatlantic journeys in the coming years. Four-day Caribbean cruises start at $1,430 per two-person cabin, while select European voyages start at $3,300.

Whether you’ve booked your own voyage or are looking to create your own J Lo-approved staycation experience at a fraction of the cost, we’ve rounded up some ways to turn your abode into a celebrity-worthy oasis (or help you to extend the life of your excursion long after your tan fades).

From spa-ready beauty from the singer’s own luxe skincare brand, to stylish home decor and gourmet kitchen staples, here’s how to bring a Virgin Voyages cruise home with you.

1. JLo Beauty That Blockbuster Cream with Hyaluronic Acid

2. Yellow Leaf The Chair Hammock

One of the most memorable parts of staying in an ocean-facing VIP cabin aboard a Virgin Voyages ship is the chair hammock on the room’s balcony. While those specific hammock chairs are custom-made for the ships, this stylish one by Yellow Leaf is as close as it gets. Thanks to its innovative design, you get all the relaxation of laying in a hammock without ever worrying about flipping over.

The Shark Tank -famed brand offers different installation options based on your needs: permanently hang it with the Indoor/Outdoor Install Kit , place it anywhere in your space with the Adjustable Hammock Stand , or keep it portable with the “Go Anywhere” Hanging Straps . If you’re feeling particularly splurgy, The Hammock Throne makes your Yellowleaf a statement piece in your home and is durable enough to be kept outdoors.

3. Intelligentsia Coffee House Blend

Caffeine is an absolute must when you’re recovering from a late night dancing in The Manor onboard nightclub, and luckily, Intelligentsia Coffee’s House Blend is available ‘round the clock aboard Virgin Voyages ships. With beans sourced from Brazil, Colombia and Rwanda, and notes of milk chocolate, citrus and apple, their signature blend will make a gorgeous addition to your coffee rotation at home.

5. Marc Jacobs The Large Tote Bag

A versatile tote bag is a must on any vacation, which is why the iconic Marc Jacobs Tote Bag is available for purchase in Virgin Voyages’ High Street shops. Made of a thick canvas, the bag is sturdy to withstand any adventures you bring it on. The large version is wide enough to carry a 15-inch laptop — or better yet, to stuff with an extra pair of shoes on your next trip.

OTHER BUYING OPTIONS: Marc Jacobs | Amazon | Bloomingdale’s | Neiman Marcus | Nordstrom | Revolve

6. Philips Hue Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip Base

Watching a movie in a Virgin Voyages cabin is made even more relaxing thanks to “Cinematic Mode,” a dim, bluish lighting setting reminiscent of a chic, loungey movie theater. With a Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip, you can customize your home’s lighting and activate it with your smart home device of choice. Configure the strips to suit your space by cutting the strips or adding on the extension and set up your own version of “Cinematic Mode” with any of the 16 million colors available in the Philips Hue system.

7. Hustle Butter Deluxe Luxury Tattoo Care & Maintenance Cream

8. moët & chandon rosé impérial champagne.

Moët & Chandon’s Rosé Impérial champagne is the unofficial drink aboard Virgin Voyages ships — it’s offered as the bottomless option during the afternoon happy hours at Richard’s Lounge and is available at all celebratory events aboard the ship. You can even get the bubbly delivered to you on-demand: look for a star on the ceiling anywhere on the boat, open your Virgin Voyages app, and shake your phone, and a crew member will bring a bottle straight to you. If you want to continue your celebrations back on land, consider investing in a few bottles for your wine collection.

Sneak peek at Scarlet Lady, the first-ever ship from Virgin Voyages

Emily McNutt

Can Richard Branson 's Virgin Group work its magic in the cruise space?

We're finally about to find out.

The brand that brought us beloved airlines , chic hotels , high-speed trains and the promise of commercial space travel (even a hyperloop !) is finally unveiling the first vessel for its long-in-development cruise line, Virgin Voyages.

virgin voyage merchandise

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Dubbed Scarlet Lady, the 2,770-passenger, 17-deck-high ship will sail its first voyage with paying passengers on March 26. But a few media outlets, including TPG, got an early peek at the vessel in Dover, U.K. on Friday, Feb. 21.

Completed just days ago at a shipyard in Italy and on its way to North America, Scarlet Lady will cater to a hipster crowd with everything from what is likely the first tattoo parlors at sea to drag-queen brunches and a colorful karaoke lounge . To ensure a proper party vibe, it'll also be a kid-free travel zone , with a minimum age to sail of 18. Suites will have a rock-star theme .

Virgin is going after travelers who might think themselves too cool to cruise , and it's promising to shake things up in the cruise world. To that end, the ship will have no buffets, no dress codes and no big Broadway-style theater shows. For entertainment, expect interactive dance parties, DJ sets and "microplays" instead, plus late-night games of dodgeball.

Can Scarlet Lady possibly live up to the hype? Here are our first impressions.

Inside the common areas

Like several other lines in recent years, Virgin Voyages hired designers with no previous cruise industry experience to make the interior of the vessel feel more like a hotel than a cruise ship. After all, Virgin wants travelers who might not have considered a cruise until now to feel comfortable boarding Scarlet Lady (or one of three other ships the line has on order).

virgin voyage merchandise

Nightlife is at the core of the Scarlet Lady experience. Spaces such as the pool deck that are traditional hubs for daytime activities have been designed to transform into lively nightspots after sunset.

virgin voyage merchandise

While many ships these days have bustling night scenes -- particularly the floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line -- Virgin is promising to take the late-night scene up a notch with Scarlet Lady.

The Manor, located on Deck 7, promises to be at the epicenter. Scarlet Lady's signature nightclub covers two floors and will host DJ'd dance parties into the early hours of the morning. It really does feel like a nightclub you'd experience in a city — there are flashing lights, large dancing areas and, of course, a bar.

In the morning, head to the Athletic Club on Deck 16. It incorporates the pool and several dedicated gym spaces. The two pools are a highlight of the top decks, along with plenty of bar spaces to go along with it.

virgin voyage merchandise

There are loads of outdoor daybeds so you can catch some Caribbean sun , though they weren't set up for Friday's windy, Dover weather. In fact, the Athletic Club is home to the largest daybed at sea. Unfortunately, because Dover, England, is not quite the same as the Caribbean, much of the outdoor space on this first look wasn't quite done. Winds were blowing close to 60 miles per hour, so the outdoor decor wasn't reflective of how it would look on a passenger sailing.

virgin voyage merchandise

You'll also be able to reserve one of 10 cabanas on the deck for a price if you prefer a bit of privacy while you sunbathe.

virgin voyage merchandise

The first gym space goes by the name of B-Complex and is designed for cardio workouts. Notably, gym spaces feature individual lockers to secure your personal belongings.

virgin voyage merchandise

On the other side of B-Complex, you'll find a more tranquil space, specializing in strength and yoga training.

virgin voyage merchandise

Finally, there's a third gym area dedicated to strength and conditioning. It's also where the majority of personal training classes will take place.

virgin voyage merchandise

As part of the Athletic Club, sailors will also have access to an exterior running track and outdoor gym equipment, including a boxing ring. It's unclear if Scarlet Lady will offer classes and, if so, at what cost.

virgin voyage merchandise

For passengers not afraid of heights, the Athletic Club is also where you'll find a giant netted area for lounging. You'll be able to look at the goings-on below from above, as if you're on a catamaran. Unfortunately, this was also not set up in time for this first look, so it wasn't available for a photo.

Deck 16 is also home to Richard's Rooftop (you can just guess who it's named after). While not technically a common area, as its usage is reserved for passengers booked in a suite cabin, it features a bar and dedicated lounge areas.

virgin voyage merchandise

After all that exercise and sun, retreat to the spa on Deck 5. There's a hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room and a number of spa treatment rooms.

virgin voyage merchandise

Unlike with dining (we'll get to that in a minute) the spa treatments aren't free on board Scarlet Lady. You'll have to pay for individual treatments. For example, a Salvation Swedish Massage will cost you $155 for 50 minutes or $225 for 75 minutes. A Rejuvenating Technology Facial will run you $199 for 50 minutes.

virgin voyage merchandise

There are some lovely spaces inside the spa that are a highlight on sea days. There are heated-stone lounge areas, a small indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, salt room and more. You have to pay to access these facilities, however: $125 for day use during sea days and $75 for day use during port days. If you purchase day access, you'll be able to enter and exit as many times as you please.

virgin voyage merchandise

Since announcing Scarlet Lady's features, the most attention-grabbing venue has been the onboard tattoo studio. Touted as the first-ever true tattoo studio at sea, Squid Ink has permanent tattoo artists who will deck out passengers with custom tattoos, an array of piercings and permanent makeup.

virgin voyage merchandise

There's a sheet of paper with some custom Virgin Voyages designs — all of which cost $150. However, if you have something else in mind, it's possible to get it done with an appointment for a higher fee.

virgin voyage merchandise

I spoke with one of the tattoo artists on board the Scarlet Lady who told me that, between the ship's delivery in Genoa, Italy, to Dover, the studio had done more than a dozen tattoos. On Friday's preview, several people got new ink.

virgin voyage merchandise

Located right next to the tattoo shop is the men's barbershop, which offers sailors a fresh shave and hair cut — for an extra cost.

virgin voyage merchandise

In terms of watering holes, you can experience the Draught Haus, described as a "beer connoisseur-approved local taproom with curated drafts."

virgin voyage merchandise

There's also Sip, which is a highlight for Champagne lovers. It's a dedicated Champagne lounge, designed in collaboration with Charles Joly. It'll feature tea and brunch services in addition to being a Champagne lounge.

virgin voyage merchandise

There's also plenty of seating in the common areas, so you'll never be searching for place to sit and socialize.

virgin voyage merchandise

Like with most large cruise ships, you can expect the standard offering of a casino, which wasn't available during our stay in Dover. It seemed, however, to include all the traditional fixtures: slot machines, table games and a bar.

virgin voyage merchandise

There's also an unconventional take on a theater, which can be transformed to fit Scarlet Lady's entertainment options, which go beyond typical Broadway shows at sea. It's called The Red Room.

virgin voyage merchandise

Finally, there's the shopping. It's called High Street, and is home to several storefronts, though we weren't able to get a good look, as everything remained closed while we were in port at Dover. The one evident shop catered to Virgin Voyages-branded merchandise, and more specifically, Scarlet Lady-themed gear.

Restaurants and bars

Virgin Voyages is taking a page from the playbooks of big-ship lines such as Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in loading up its ships with lots of signature dining. The line is touting 20 separate restaurants and bars across Scarlet Lady.

The days of cruise ships just offering a main dining room with fixed seating and one or two alternative "specialty" restaurants are long gone, of course. But for a ship the size of Scarlet Lady to have 20 dining venues is impressive. Virgin clearly is aiming to be at the front of the "more is better" trend in onboard dining.

Virgin also is going "full Norwegian" in its lack of dress codes at onboard restaurants (or anywhere else on board, for that matter) and flexible dining format -- Norwegian being the line that years ago invented the "freestyle dining" concept of eating whenever you want and with whomever you want on a ship.

All meals across Scarlet Lady are included in the fare -- an upscale touch usually only seen on higher-end lines . You can visit Pink Agave, the upscale Mexican restaurant on Deck 5 on one night and order a pie at The Pizza Place, located on Deck 7 the next, and not pay a penny more than you've already laid out in advance of sailing.

virgin voyage merchandise

That said, most of the dining establishments on board have a "treat yourself" option. That means adding something a bit more special to your meal for a fee. For example, in Pink Agave, the Mexican restaurant, you can order the Pescado Sarandeado, a dish with achiote halibut, lobster, grilled giant prawn and bay scallops for $30. Or, in Virgin Extra, the Italian eatery, you can elect to add truffle to your meal.

virgin voyage merchandise

Some of the highlights include Gunbae, which serves Korean food and features flameless grills at each table and is located on Deck 15.

virgin voyage merchandise

In true Virgin Voyages fashion, on each of the tables was a food and drink menu, along with a list of drinking games. There were no prices along with the drinks.

virgin voyage merchandise

You'll also find Test Kitchen on Deck 6, where travelers can pick their ingredients from a laboratory-like setting.

virgin voyage merchandise

The chef then combines your choices into a final dish. If you're interested in activities while at sea, the Test Kitchen will also host cooking and mixology classes, among other events.

virgin voyage merchandise

The Dock on Deck 7 is a relaxed, casual space, which is more of a lounge than anything else. There's plenty of seating in a light, nautical and airy setting.

virgin voyage merchandise

Also near the dock is a diner-style venue that serves milkshakes. It's surrounded by games like shuffleboard and air hockey to keep passengers occupied on days where it might be rainy.

virgin voyage merchandise

The largest restaurant on board the Scarlet Lady is called The Wake, and is Virgin's answer to a dining room, giving passengers a view of (you guessed it) the ship's wake. Here, you'll be able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. At night for dinner service, it specializes as a steakhouse and raw bar. A cocktail cart will make the rounds to all tables.

virgin voyage merchandise

If you're vegan or vegetarian, there's a special eatery on board the Scarlet Lady just for you. It goes by the name Razzle Dazzle and is one of the most visually appealing (and Instagram-worthy) spaces on the ship.

virgin voyage merchandise

Not only can you opt for vegan and vegetarian dishes, but the space also serves up alcoholic (and nonalcoholic) smoothies. It will host a drag show brunch during the day.

virgin voyage merchandise

Speaking of Instagram-worthy spots on the ship, you can expect to find plenty.

virgin voyage merchandise

The most all-encompassing version of a dining area comes in the form of The Galley, which is Scarlet Lady's take on an all-service area. Basically an upscale food court, there's plenty of seating in this space, which is light-filled and spacious.

virgin voyage merchandise

Unfortunately, during our preview, many of the stations weren't open, but they did look promising, with plenty of variety. Between an area dedicated to sweets to a burger bar, noodle bar, taco shop and more, passengers looking for a bite during the day will have dedicated set options.

virgin voyage merchandise

While food is included in the cost of your cruise, drinks are not, save for bottled and sparkling water; sodas and soft drinks; drip coffee and tea. Those are all free. But if you fancy an alcoholic beverage on board, you'll have to pay extra.

virgin voyage merchandise

At several venues where I asked for a drink menu, I was told they hadn't yet been printed. However, at the casino bar, there were menus. Prices seemed relatively on par with what you might expect. Cocktails ranged between $10 and $14. Wines by the glass ranged from $7 to $13 at this particular bar. Beer on offer included Heineken ($5), Amstel Light ($6), Corona Extra ($6), Wynwood Brewing Co. ($7), Narragansett Brewing Co. ($7) and Funky Buddha Brewery ($8).

In the morning, after a late night out, the Gym and Tonic Bar will supply a necessary detox in the form of fresh, cold-pressed juices.

Here's a look at the cabins onboard Scarlet Lady:

virgin voyage merchandise

In total, Scarlet Lady offers 1,330 cabins and 78 Tom Dixon-designed RockStar Suites. Notably, nearly all the cabins (93%) have windows to the ocean, while 86% have a balcony. There are very few windowless "inside" cabins.

RockStar Suites

These suites are broken down into the following categories:

There are two Massive Suites, and they're, well, quite large. At 2,147 square feet each, the suites can sleep up to four people and feature a master bedroom, music room, living room, outdoor shower and more. Attached to each of the Massive Suites is a balcony that features two hammocks, a hot tub, a staircase leading to an upstairs table and more.

virgin voyage merchandise

In the nights before Friday's preview, Richard Branson stayed in one of these suites. Like the other suites, these have a true music theme. There's a vinyl record player, a whole showing area with guitars on display and a large in-room bar. The room is quite stunning — and worth a splurge if you're traveling as a big group looking for a fun time.

virgin voyage merchandise

While not as big as the Massive Suites, the Fab Suites feature 950 square feet of space and a marble, so-called Peek-a-Boo shower inside -- with views out to the balcony -- and a Peek-a-View shower on the balcony itself. Also on the balcony is a hammock chair, loungers and a cocktail table. Inside, the living area with bar and record player is separated from the bedroom. Both living areas have ocean views.

virgin voyage merchandise

For something a bit more modest and British, Posh Suites have 833 square feet of space.

virgin voyage merchandise

The Gorgeous Suites feature 570 square feet of space in each, and on the terrace, guests can lounge in a swing chair.

There are several other categories of suites, though they're all relatively similar. Inside, the bedrooms are more spacious, and the bathrooms feature marble. In rooms like the Corner Suite, you'll get additional balcony space.

Standard rooms

Nonsuite cabins fall into three categories: Sea Terrace, Sea View and Insider. Each of the rooms — even the suites — are opened by a touch card. You won't be inserting any keycards on Scarlet Lady.

virgin voyage merchandise

Standard cabins offer about 265 square feet of space, except for the individual room, which is meant for solo travelers.

virgin voyage merchandise

Unlike traditional staterooms, which feature a standard bed, Virgin has patented a new design, called a Seabed, that can essentially be reconfigured from a bed into a sofa. During the day, the sofa is meant to encourage socializing between passengers.

virgin voyage merchandise

Each Sea Terrace balcony room will feature a hammock.

virgin voyage merchandise

Lighting (both mood lighting as well as standard lighting) can be controlled from an in-room device. And the bathroom will be slightly more spacious than cruisers might be used to — especially the rainfall-style shower.

virgin voyage merchandise

Passengers will have access to free Wi-Fi both in their rooms and around the ship. This is another upscale touch. A growing number of higher-end ocean cruise lines include free Wi-Fi for passengers in the fare (credit Viking for starting the trend), but it's not common on vessels aimed at a broader market.

Itineraries

As has long been the plan at Virgin Voyages, Scarlet Lady will call the warm waters of the Caribbean home. After a brief stop in New York City in early March for media and travel agent previews, Scarlet Lady will take up permanent residence in Miami. Eventually, the line will have its very own brand-new terminal at PortMiami . To be called Terminal V, for Virgin, it's now scheduled to open in late 2021.

Scarlet Lady will operate four- and five-night voyages out of Miami to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Many of the sailings include stops in Cozumel, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. All itineraries feature a visit to Virgin's private space on Bimini island in the Bahamas .

On Bimini, you can expect a bit of relaxation and areas that will be more lively. The Beach Club features a massive lagoon-style pool and lounge area. Later in the day, a DJ will set the party scene and, at night, passengers can expect bonfires on the beach. Virgin Voyages has Diplo, Mark Ronson, DJ MK and more slated to perform on various sailings.

In November 2019, Virgin unveiled the name of its second ship, Valiant Lady . Unlike Scarlet Lady, which will sail in the Caribbean, Valiant Lady will debut in May 2021 on seven-night itineraries out of Barcelona, Spain.

What it costs

Cruise fares will likely even out a bit once Scarlet Lady officially sets sail. But, expect higher prices during the first few months at sea. Deals can be had though, especially for solo sailors who can book cabins meant for singles or larger cabins where they can stretch out.

For comparison's sake, a five-night Riviera Maya itinerary -- round-trip from Miami -- that calls on Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and the Beach Club at Bimini (as well as a sea day) costs $1,000 per person for a Sea View cabin priced for double occupancy. The same cabin for a solo traveler costs $1,375.

Overall impression

Overall, Virgin Voyages has delivered on something that feels distinctly different from anything else in the cruise industry. Scarlet Lady is a ship that might be able to attract even the never-cruisers — exactly the crowd Virgin is looking for.

virgin voyage merchandise

Though there are some kinks to work out, that will surely come with time. As crew become more acquainted with the ship's features, the experience will likely improve. And remember: I experienced Scarlet Lady in Dover, England, in February — not the same environment passengers will experience in the Caribbean.

Related: These are the best new cruise ships of 2020

That said, with benefits like free Wi-Fi across the ship, doing away with some of the old-fashioned features of cruising (like buffets and scheduled dinners), passengers may find something with Virgin that other cruise lines don't offer. Ultimately, time will tell just how many people buy into the promise of Scarlet Lady and Virgin Voyages: or if the never-cruisers stay that way.

How to spend your virgin voyages sailor loot.

Published by

What is Sailor Loot?

Sailor Loot is Virgin Voyages’ name for onboard credit- money you can spend on the ship or at the Beach Club at Bimini. Sailor Loot is almost as good as cash, as you can spend it on anything including drinks, merchandise, or even casino credit. But be sure to spend it all. Sailor Loot is not refundable once your journey ends. Keep reading to learn some fun ways to spend your Sailor Loot on your next Virgin cruise!

How to spend Sailor Loot

Sailor Loot is similar to the Bar Tab . Simply scan your band at any merchant onboard to use Sailor Loot. It’s as simple as that. Of course, you are probably asking, “what should I buy with Sailor Loot?” Here are some of my favorite ways to spend your Virgin Voyages onboard credit.

Can Sailor Loot be used as Bar Tab?

Yes! Sailor Loot can be used for absolutely everything the Bar Tab can. Picture this scary scenario: It’s day 2 of your 5 night cruise and you’ve spent your Bar Tab . Fear not pirate, Sailor Loot is applied automatically once your Bar Tab runs dry. Buy that next round of beers or frozen triple mocha smoothie . You deserve it!

Bring home some sweet Virgin Voyages merchandise

Looking for a needle-free way to remember the best vacation of your life? Bring home a coffee mug or a miniature model of your favorite Virgin Voyages ship. Maybe you didn’t join the hammock club (if you know, you know) onboard, so pick one up for home! There’s a ton of great merchandise you can only buy onboard, so don’t forget to pickup a souvenir or eight before you disembark.

A Scarlet Lady mug and model on my desk.

Go shopping on High Street

Indulge in some retail therapy at the upscale shops on High Street , Virgin Voyages’ onboard shopping district. Makeup, jewelry, and great men’s and women’s wear await you on Deck 6. You can also visit the salon or barber shop to keep you looking your best. If you’re adventurous, get a tattoo at Squid Ink. What better way to ensure you’ll never forget the wild nights you can’t remember!

Detox before you retox at the Redemption Spa

Didn’t purchase A Splash of Romance package ? Use your Sailor Loot to purchase spa passes. Or, better yet, get a couples massage with your sweetie and follow it up with a good sweat in the steam room. If you really tore it up on Scarlet Night, you can even get an IV treatment with vitamins and electrolytes to have you ready to go in no time.

Try your luck at the casino

You don’t need cash to play at the onboard casino. Sailor Loot can be redeemed for slot machine credit and promotional chips. Use your promo chips on blackjack, roulette, or craps. Now, you cannot redeem your slot credit or promo chips for actual cash, but you can use them to bet. All winnings are paid out in actual slot credits or casino chips which can then be exchanged for cash.

Recap: You can use Sailor Loot for anything onboard

Sailor Loot is (almost) as good as cash. The only problem is you cannot take Sailor Loot with you when you leave the ship. Fortunately, you’ll have a ton of fun options like drinks, merchandise, and spa treatments to enjoy during your cruise. You can also track your Sailor Loot purchases on the Virgin Voyages Sailor app. You may even score some free Sailor Loot from a Virgin Voyages promotion. If you need more help spending your Sailor Loot, contact me , and I will be right there.

30+ Things Virgin Voyages Doesn’t Tell You About Their Cruises

But there were a few things we encountered that will probably never make it into one of our blog posts about Virgin Voyages or, for that matter, even the most well-researched Virgin Voyages (VV) website – including their own!

I mean, everyone will tell you that kids aren’t allowed on this cruise; it’s strictly 18+. And all will mention that basic Wi-Fi, as well as non-pressed juices, sodas, teas and drip coffee are free on the ship. But there are plenty of things that, I think, are important to know when planning a cruise on VV that might be a little bit more difficult to find out.

This list is made up of things Joe and I experienced, as well as what several people who were on the same sailing as us – the July 17-22 Richard’s Birthday Bash cruise – said they noticed.

Wristbands and luggage tags

Many cruise lines send you luggage tags ahead of time, so you can attach them to your bags and the porters know where to bring your stuff when you arrive. At VV, you drop your luggage off upon arrival, the porters ask you for your cabin number, and they put it on a VV baggage tag, similar to the ones they use at the airport.

WIth Virgin Voyages, you’ll receive a wristband (used for checking in and out of the ship, charging for drinks and souvenirs, and opening your cabin door) when you check in at the kiosks on the 2nd floor of the terminal. If you have a regular cabin, it’ll be red. If you’ve splurged on a Rock Star or Mega Rock Star cabin, your wristband will be black. And if you have some other status, whether purchased or earned, that will be in the form of a ribbon you wear around your wrist.

The app is buggy

Everything you do on VV – reservations for meals, activities and excursions, etc., are all done on the VV app. Heads up that the app is VERY buggy and it will crash as often as it works. Generally speaking, if you shut the app down and restart it, it will work again. Well, for a while, anyway. And when it crashes again, rinse and repeat. 😉

They only email 1 person

Maybe it’s because we were working with a travel agent who only put down Joe’s email. But any time there was something we needed to know – like a new form we had to fill out ahead of time – the email only went to him. The thing is, I’m the one who checks email on a regular basis, whereas Joe may only check his email every few days. So make sure that emails go to everyone involved – or at least to the person who actually, you know, reads their emails ;-).

Parking at the port?

If you’re driving to Terminal V, you can drop your luggage off first and then park at their parking garage across the street. I know you want to park as close to the ship as possible. Don’t. Park by the elevators, which are in the center of the garage. When you’ve disembarked and have to bring your luggage to your car on the 3rd floor, you’ll thank me if you’ve parked near the elevator, rather than 4 or 5 rows over.

Ride sharing to the port?

The Port of Miami is pretty big. Choose “Terminal V” as your destination when prompted.

Meal, activity and excursion reservations

So let’s say you’re all ready for your cruise, you’ve downloaded the app, and filled out all the info it asks of you. You go to make some reservations and you notice that they only have a limited number of reservations available before your cruise. Maybe only 3 available times for The Wake, or only 9:15pm or later for The Test Kitchen. Don’t panic! They’ll open up more opportunities as your cruise gets closer; just keep checking the app. And they’ll open many more opportunities on the day you set sail. In fact, brunches at the Wake and Razzle Dazzle are only available when reservations are made on the ship’s Wi-Fi.

In fact, when you get to VV’s “Terminal V” in Miami, you can join their free Wi-Fi either before you get on the ship, or the very moment you go aboard. Either way, just join the MERMAID4U Wi-Fi network and you’ll be able to start making reservations then and there. Make your reservations as soon as you’re able, especially for shows.

By the way, even if you try to make a reservation (for dinner or a show) and there’s no availability, go anyway. There’s no guarantee they’ll be able to get you in, but restaurants will do what they can to make room for you. And each show has a “wait line” that starts about 30 minutes before showtime, in case there are “no shows.”

Have friends on board?

With the exception of solo cabins and the occasional triple, most cabins only hold 2 sailors each. So if you’re with more than 1 other person, your party is going to have more than 1 cabin. Use the app to link with them before you get on the ship, so you can add to each other’s agendas for meals, shows, etc.

The pineapple people

Virgin Voyages is the most open, all-inclusive and accepting cruise I’ve ever been on. That being said, we saw a lot of pineapple people on our cruise. If you’re into that, no judgement here, and more power to you. But if you’re not, you may not want to wear anything with pineapples on it. Especially upside down ones. Just sayin’ 😉

Intimacy kits

If you’re with a special someone and want to go, (ahem) “below deck,” they sell intimacy kits in the gift shop near Extra Virgin (the Italian restaurant) so you can have fun and stay safe (Note to those who may be interested: the jelly included in the kit is 100% vegan, and glycerin, glycol and paraben-free).

Food & beverage

You can buy growlers of beer and drink them all over the ship.

Heads up that the Italian and Mexican restaurants are “authentic” versions of each nationality, not Americanized versions. So don’t go to those restaurants expecting to see chicken parmesan or a Chimichanga on their respective menus, because you’ll be deeply disappointed.

None of the restaurants give really huge portions (although we practically rolled out the door of the Italian restaurant), but Test Kitchen in particular has 6 “tastings” on their menu, rather than full plates. Joe and I generally try to eat “right,” without overstuffing ourselves, and left Test Kitchen comfortably full. But we saw many people complain they didn’t get enough food there and that they left hungry. If you’re used to big servings, plan accordingly.

They don’t have “doggy bags” at any of the restaurants so if you don’t think you’ll be able to finish, BYOB (bring your own bag). And yes, each cabin has a small fridge so you can store food & beverages there.

Charging your devices

It goes without saying that you should bring chargers for your devices. But sometimes people forget. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you’re in luck – they sell Apple chargers on the ship. However they (Inexplicably? Stupidly?) don’t sell chargers for Android devices. You can ask your cabin attendant if they have any Android chargers others have left behind that you can borrow, but there’s no guarantee that they will.

That being said, there’s a Samsung tablet in each cabin – you can charge your Android devices on the tablet’s charger. It’ll also work for late model iPhones that are charging pad compatible.

Also, although the cabins have plenty of wall plugs and USB ports, if you sleep on the side of the bed closer to the window/terrace, the closest plug may be a good 6+ feet away (hello, design flaw!). Bring an extension cord or long charger cord (but not a long surge protector – they’re not allowed on ships; they’re considered a fire hazard).

VV has lots and LOTS of photo ops that are perfect for Insta, FB, etc. One thing they DON’T have on board is photographers. So there won’t be someone taking photos at the restaurants, pool, dance parties, etc., with the hopes that you’ll buy copies at the end of the cruise. If you want photos, take photos. Or ask the people working on the ship to take your photo – they’ll always be willing to oblige.

Those hammocks!

There is a hammock on the terrace of most cabins that have a terrace. There are also hammocks all over the Virgin Resort on Bimini. Y’all, these hammocks are AMAZING and, for me, were one of the best parts of our cruise.

The company that makes them, Yellow Leaf Hammocks, were featured on Shark Tank a couple of years ago. Anyway, VV sells the hammocks on the cruise ship, but it was my experience that they only had one style available, in only one color choice.

Yellow Leaf Hammocks has several color choices on their website , as well as 3 different styles of hammocks – the “Chair” style that’s on VV, their “Signature” hammock (that one is available in classic size and family size – those were the ones at the resort on Bimini), and a cotton rope one that looks like the signature hammock but is made with 100% natural cotton instead of acrylic.

Heads up that all 3 styles are also available, still from Yellow Leaf Hammocks, on Amazon.com. And as of this writing, they’re about $5 less than on Yellow Leaf’s main webpage. I ordered one on Amazon and was also offered a coupon (the fine print on the coupon says it’s only good for a limited time, but I don’t know how long that “limited time” is. In 2022, the coupon was $20, now it’s $25.).

Cabin bathrooms

VV supplies you with towels for wherever you go – they’re by the pools, at the spa, and they even offer you towels as you disembark on some port days. However inside the cabins, they give you bath towels, hand towels and makeup remover towels. But no washcloths. The makeup towels are the size, shape and texture of washcloths. But if you’re using one to remove makeup, you may not want to use it to wash yourself in the shower. So either bring your own washcloth(s), or ask your cabin attendant for extra makeup remover towels.

Heads up that there is no electric outlet in the bathroom. If you want to use an electric razor, charge your electric toothbrush or blow dry or curl your hair, you’ll have to do it outside the bathroom. And if you want to have a night light in your bathroom, you’re going to be out of luck ( just like at this bizarre hotel ). Fortunately, the cabin lights can be adjusted to 5%, which is enough light for most people to find their way to the toilet.

Also – if you’re in an XL Terrace cabin, both the shower and toilet rooms have doors that are made to stay closed unless you manually open them. If you have to use the toilet in the middle of the night, I discovered you can hang a towel over both the towel bar on the door and on the wall to prop the toilet door open. That way you don’t have to worry about finding the door handle in the dark.

a towel on a rack

Room service

VV offers room service for a $7 Ship Eats fee (the fee is waived if you purchase a premium drink). It’s available 24 hours a day (breakfast from 5am to 11am and other foods from 11am to 5am), but heads up that the service ends at 11pm on the day before you disembark the ship.

The Ship Eats service fee is waived for Rock Stars and Mega Rock Stars.

When in port

When you’re in port, you may or may not be in the same time zone as where you set sail. Miami, for example, is on Eastern Time, but Playa del Carmen/Cozumel is on Central Time. SOME (but not all) ship captains keep “ship time” the way it was when they left their original port – so it may be 3pm in Cozumel, but 4pm on the ship. Other captains switch to local time. They’ll announce this, but make sure you keep track, especially for excursions and whatever time you’re required to be back on board.

Also, depending on where you’re in port, bring bug spray. We had no problems at Bimini, but others on our ship got eaten up by bugs.

The 3-hour spa pass

The spa on VV has all sorts of treatments available for purchase. They also have a 3-hour spa package that allows you to experience their sauna, salt room, mud room, hot tub, cold tub, pool, etc. The package is available from 11am to 2pm or 2pm to 5pm and you can come and go as you please.

The 3-hour spa package has 2 different prices – it’s $39 per person for port days and $59 for at sea days. The price is mentioned on the app, but ONLY ON THE DAY OF. So you may be at Bimini, see that it’s $39, sign up for tomorrow (which is a sea day), and suddenly get a bill for $59. If you sign up in person, like we did, they don’t even mention the price.

As I said earlier, VV is a non-tipping cruise. Their crew is said to be paid well, at least in comparison to the rest of the cruise industry, and tips are not required or requested. That being said, if someone on the cruise was particularly helpful, you CAN tip them; you just don’t HAVE to. Writing a letter to VV about a particular crew member or members can also help them to get bonuses, etc.

Also keep in mind that people who you encounter for your VV cruise – particularly the porters at the terminal – are not VV employees. Kindly tip them. Here’s an international tipping guide for who, what, why, where, when and how to tip .

Disembarkation

Like many cruise lines, you can leave your luggage outside your cabin by a certain time on the evening before disembarkation. The cabin attendants will pick up your bags and you’ll find them as you leave the ship. You get to choose what time you’ll need to disembark and pick up your luggage, although you’re also welcome to bring your luggage yourself and disembark whenever you feel good and ready, as long as it’s by “last call.”

Heads up that the earlier disembarkation time you choose, the less crowded it is, although everyone needs to be off the ship by 10:45am. If you wait until around that later time, the queues are minimal.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

As I said, some of these were things that Joe and I noticed while we were on our VV cruise. However other people noticed other things, as well. So a HUGE THANK-YOU to Marney B., Kay C., Suzanne E., Barbara H., Lin H., Nancee H., Paul H., Sue H., Richard P., Alexis R., Mark S., Shannanaghans S. and Amanda W. for their input for this post!

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

virgin voyage merchandise

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.
