Located along California’s scenic Pacific coast in Orange County, Costa Mesa is a city of about 110,000 residents that was incorporated more than seven decades ago.

Back then, the area was primarily dedicated to agriculture and cattle, but over the years, it has become more developed and its population has increased nearly ten-fold.

It’s located just a few kilometers from some of the Golden State’s most famous beaches, including Huntington Beach to the North and Newport Beach to the south.

Visitors to Costa Mesa have a variety of outdoor recreational, artistic, cultural, and dining options at their fingertips. Day trips to San Diego and LA are popular for those who don’t mind braving the often congested freeways.

1. Noguchi Garden

Located on Anton Boulevard in Costa Mesa, the award-winning Noguchi Garden is one of the area’s premier outdoor attractions.

Construction of the garden began in the late ‘70s. It now comprises nearly two acres and features indigenous and exotic plants, flowers, and trees.

The garden is divided into a number of distinct areas, including walking paths, fountains, and cultivated gardens that seamlessly incorporate natural and humanmade elements.

The garden is often referred to as the California Scenario, is open to the public regularly, and is located just a few kilometers from the downtown area.

2. South Coast Repertory Theater

For more than 50 years, the South Coast Repertory Theater has been an iconic local live entertainment venue.

Located on Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, it typically gets rave reviews from industry authorities and those who know a good production when they see one.

The theater’s season generally runs from early fall to early summer and features productions that run the gamut from old classics and contemporary comedies to musicals and murder mysteries.

3. Fairview Park

4. Costa Mesa Estancia

California’s history has largely been influenced by Mexican immigrants, who’ve come north over the years looking for steady work and better lives.

They’ve brought their customs, cuisine, and architecture with them, the latter of which is evident in the Costa Mesa Estancia, one of the oldest original structures in Orange County.

The historic home is perched on a bluff above the Santa Ana River wash in Estancia Park. It has been preserved in near-original condition as a memorial to the area’s pioneers, who came nearly two centuries ago.

The home was originally built as a residence for cowboys and ranchers who tended large herds of horses and cattle in the area.

5. South Coast Plaza

Parts of Orange County are among the most affluent communities in the country. There’s no shortage of upscale retail options for those interested in stocking up on stylish garb while in the area.

Though its name may be a perfect example of reverse psychology in marketing, there’s pretty much general agreement that Bad Coffee’s java is decidedly good.

The business was established in 2016 by a couple of self-professed coffee snobs determined to bring high-quality beverages to thirsty Costa Mesans.

Previous guests have commented on the shop’s abundant natural lighting, comfy chairs, easily accessible electrical outlets, and fast Wi-Fi.

Bad Coffee is located on Adams Avenue in Costa Mesa. The menu includes a variety of non-coffee options like chai tea, sparkling water, and juice, as well as fresh baked goods like muffins and pastries.

7. Segerstrom Center for the Arts

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts is a multi-venue entertainment attraction located on Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa. It was founded in the mid-‘80s.

It’s a modern performing arts attraction with stunning architecture that is now home to several area musical organizations, including the Pacific Symphony and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

In total, the center’s distinct halls seat nearly 6,000 visitors. They offer a variety of year-round performances appealing to a range of guests, including children.

8. Orange County Museum of Art

The museum is located inside the South Coast Village and features an impressive collection of thousands of items that center on California history, from the turn of the 20th century to the present.

For the bohemian crowd who tend to shun mainstream attractions like national chain coffee shops and shopping malls, The CAMP is a popular alternative.

Though traditional sushi and sashimi are generally the stars of the show, Hanare’s limited menu includes contemporary entrées like squash soup garnished with caviar, and steamed lobster with a mushroom reduction.

The restaurant’s prices are definitely on the high side, so it may not be a great fit for big families looking to fill empty stomachs on the cheap.

That being said, for those looking for a unique dining experience in a relaxed environment, it’s definitely worth checking out.

12. Huntington Beach

Located just ten minutes from downtown Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach is known worldwide as Surf City.

The beach features big waves, world-class surfers, fantastic beaches, and sweeping sea views. It draws millions of visitors annually.

Though many visitors prefer to find a quiet stretch of beach to enjoy the sand, sun, and surf, Huntington Beach hosts a number of annual sporting events such as professional beach volleyball and surfing tournaments.

Located in the city of Irvine, just ten kilometers northeast of downtown Costa Mesa, it is designated as a state and national natural landmark.

If you’re traveling with a dog, you’re out of luck; they’re not allowed in Bommer Canyon.

15. The Bowers Museum

Unlike most of the area’s museums that tend to focus on California art, history, and culture, The Bowers Museum on North Main Street in Santa Ana’s collection includes an eclectic mix of items from all over the world.

The museum is named after a philanthropic local man who donated the land in the ‘30s. Though its collection started small, it has grown to include more than 10,000 pieces from as far away as China, South America, India, and the South Pacific.

The museum’s staff frequently host temporary exhibits from private collections and other institutions, and there’s a dedicated kid’s area onsite.

Santa Ana is about 15 kilometers north of Costa Mesa.

Although it was named after its topography—“coastal tableland”— Costa Mesa  has become better known as a centre for Orange County sophistication. Centrally located between San Diego and Los Angeles, the town (also home of summer’s  OC Fair ) combines a vibrant arts scene, renowned shopping, and a burgeoning foodie culture, all a mile from the Pacific Ocean. 

Even if you play at the beach (or shop) by day, make time for a show at night in the acclaimed arts and theatre district .  Grab tickets to a summer concert at the  Pacific Amphitheater  or visit one of Costa Mesa’s more than three dozen art galleries, including the renowned  Martin Lawrence Galleries . At the centre of the art scene is the  Segerstrom Centre for the Arts , the home stage for the American Ballet Theatre’s Gillespie School of Dance, the Pacific Symphony, and the Philharmonic Society. Even if you can’t snag tickets to a performance, you can take a free, behind-the-scenes tour or browse the more than  two dozen pieces of public art  in and around the theatre complex. 

If you’re more inspired by shopping bags than sculptures, head to  South Coast Plaza , a destination mall with more than 250 designer retailers (including big names such as Hermès, Baccarat, Gucci, and more), an indoor carousel, and rotating art exhibits. Looking for something less mainstream? Try  The LAB Anti-Mall , a unique indoor/outdoor shopping centre highlighting the “Little American Business” (LAB) with cool boutiques, vintage finds, and hipster favourites.

About an hour south of Los Angeles, the city of Costa Mesa is buzzing with culinary, foodie, and artsy attractions. To be honest – when it comes to things to do in Orange County, Costa Mesa is at the top of my list.

I actually used to live in Costa Mesa after I graduated from college, and I specifically chose this city as my first home because I suspected it’d have great restaurants, a cool shopping scene, and easy access to the beach (hello, adulting done right?). What I found in my 2 years here was that Costa Mesa did in fact have all of those things… and so much more!

Known as the City of the Arts, Costa Mesa is Orange County’s hub for theater aficionados and fine art appreciation. This affinity for the arts spills over across the city in the form of murals, public art installations, and other local photogenic hotspots.

Recently, I revisited Costa Mesa to eat, explore, and remote-work my way through the city on a mini staycation, and my mind was blown with just how many new things there are to do here. Whether you’re from out of town or looking for the ideal Orange County staycation, keep reading for the coolest, tastiest, and most fun things to do in Costa Mesa, California!

First, Where is Costa Mesa, California?

Splitting the distance between Los Angeles and San Diego, Costa Mesa is a centrally located city known for its arts, food, and shopping scene. It’s often considered the heart of Orange County, and its location makes it the perfect home base for exploration. From Costa Mesa, you’re just 5 – 10 minutes from Newport Beach, 20 minutes from Disneyland, and 15 minutes from the Angels Stadium.

While many often associate Orange County with places like Laguna, Newport, and Huntington Beach, what I love about Costa Mesa is that you really do get the best of both worlds – all the coastal, laidback California charm, while conveniently marching to a slightly more urban, buzzy drum.

If you’re coming in from out of town, Costa Mesa is just 5 minutes from John Wayne Airport, 30 minutes from the Long Beach Airport, and an hour from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Dive Fork-First into Costa Mesa’s Restaurants

Orange County’s food scene is pretty impressive – and increasingly so in the past few years – but Costa Mesa has really made a name for itself as OC’s Eatcation capital! You can find such a wide variety of establishments here, from cheap tacos and margaritas to fresh-caught seafood and some fancy Michelin stars. So, something that’s naturally high on my list for any visitor to Costa Mesa is a culinary romp through the city, diving fork-first into as many of these amazing restaurants as you can.

I have several favorite spots that I love, and I’ll list all of them at the bottom of this post, but for starters…

My favorite, go-to Costa Mesa restaurants are:

• Toast Kitchen + Bakery
• Habana Restaurant and Bar
• Native Foods
• Pitfire Artisan Pizza

Chase Cocktails and Pints Through the City

The craft and micro beer scene is here to stay in California, and Costa Mesa is a shining example of this movement in motion. When I lived here more than five years ago, there were already a handful of breweries in the area I could pick from. Now? You can head down the Costa Mesa Beer Trail and experience five of Costa Mesa’s best breweries all within a stone’s throw from one another!

The Costa Mesa Beer Trail

The Costa Mesa Beer Trail consists of five tasting rooms in the SoBeCa District of the city. Only one of these requires a car or a ride-share to get to. The rest are all within walking distance. Here’s how I recommend doing the beer trail!

• Start at the Brewing Reserve of CA (Try the OC Vice with peach, or Hell Corgi!)
• Catch a quick ride over to Green Cheek Beer Co. (Try their Time Will Tell or Vanilla Please)
• Head across the street to Gunwhale Ales (Try A Juicy Tale)
• Hop Over to Salty Bear Brewing at The CAMP (Try Aloha Guava Kolsch)
• Visit The LAB and head straight to Bootleggers Brewery to finish off the beer trail! (Try their Raspberry Sour)

If beer isn’t your thing, Costa Mesa’s cocktail scene is not to be overlooked! From lounges and clubs to pubs and speakeasies, there’s a place here for most anyone looking to have a good time.

Here are some of my favorite places to grab a cocktail in Costa Mesa:

• The Wayfarer
• Wild Goose Tavern

Appreciate the Fine Arts

The City of the Arts got its name largely due to the fact that Costa Mesa is home to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts – Orange County’s premier performing arts center that is a must-see for any first-time visitors to Costa Mesa. Henry Segerstrom, who the complex is now named after, was a philanthropist and advocate of the arts. Don’t be surprised if you hear his name pop up while you’re in town. It’s because of Henry Segerstrom that Costa Mesa became the lively, metropolitan destination that it is today.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts boasts several world-class performance venues and frequently draws artists, orchestras, Broadway shows, dance troupes, and other incredible global talents. I have fond memories of coming here in college for events and shows myself, so I highly recommend checking the schedule to see what’s in town while you are!

If there’s nothing happening while you’re in Costa Mesa, I still suggest visiting the Segerstrom Center for the Arts to admire the architecture. It’s a beautiful venue and incredibly close to other popular attractions in the city, like South Coast Plaza across the street.

Explore Costa Mesa’s Vibrant Murals and Public Displays

Seeing a show isn’t the only way to bask in the City of the Arts! In fact, Costa Mesa boasts an extensive public arts scene that’s free for anyone to enjoy, and it’s blown up in recent years. There are a couple different ways to explore Costa Mesa’s public art scene.

1. Admire the Noguchi Garden

If you blink, you might miss it! I definitely did the first time I walked breezily by this place as a freshly minted college grad, not realizing the Noguchi Garden’s significance. Commissioned by, you guessed it, Henry Segerstrom, the Noguchi Garden is a minimalistic sculpture garden tucked away between towering corporate offices not far from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Created by Isamu Noguchi, the area – titled California Scenario – was crafted to symbolize various geographical characteristics found throughout the state: Forest Walk, Land Use, Desert Land, Water Source, Water Use and Energy Fountain. The entire public display is centered by a structure called The Spirit of the Lima Bean, a nod to Costa Mesa’s agricultural past and the Segerstrom family’s history as lima bean farmers in the area prior to its development.

This is a popular spot for photographers, because of its architectural simplicity and “hidden gem” quality. The way sunlight hits this sculpture garden varies dramatically from morning to late afternoon, but no matter what time you go your eyes (and phones) will be in for a treat!

2. Go on a Self-Guided Art Walk

Inclusive of the Noguchi Garden and so much more, you can actually string together more than 20 different pieces of free public art throughout the city using this handy guide and map provided by Costa Mesa’s local tourism board, Travel Costa Mesa. Again thanks to Henry Segerstrom, several different acclaimed artists have left their mark on the city, so you can enjoy one-of-a-kind works from the likes of Isamu Noguchi, Joan Miro, and more all while strolling around the city on foot.

As you walk from spot to spot, use the guide linked above as a reference point and click the “Listen Now” button next to each landmark to learn more about the art piece and what inspired it.

3. Hunt Down Public Murals

I definitely didn’t get to see as many cool murals throughout Costa Mesa when I lived here, so it was awesome to see such a colorful transformation take shape across the city! Today, there are several beautiful, vibrant, meaningful murals dotted throughout Costa Mesa, and if you’re a mural lover, you should absolutely make an afternoon out of going to hunt these down.

Here are some great Costa Mesa murals I recommend seeing: 

• Costa Mesa Bloom: 1870 Harbor Blvd, at Triangle Square on the corner of 19th Street and Harbor Boulevard
• Have a Nice Day: 512 W 19th Street, on the side of SOCIAL Costa Mesa
• Kobe Bryant Memorial: 512 W 19th Street, on the side of SOCIAL Costa Mesa next to the “Have a Nice Day” mural
• Taco Mesa Skulls: 647 W 19th Street, on the side of Taco Mesa
• Dolly Parton: 719 W 19th Street, on the side of STRUT Bar & Club

Go Shopping At a Mall (or Anti-Mall)

When I think of my time lived in Costa Mesa, I immediately think about how much time I spent in three specific places: South Coast Plaza , The CAMP , and The Lab Anti-Mall . These three places, along with some other newer spots throughout the city, make Costa Mesa’s shopping (and dining) scene one that can’t be missed.

South Coast Plaza, as I mentioned earlier, is located right across from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This shopping destination has been around now for more than 50 years and is home to a vast variety of retailers, from Forever21 to Hermes. During the holidays (and honestly year-round), there are often beautiful, ornate decorations on display as you walk through the mall, so even if you’re not actually shopping you can still enjoy a visual feast. Fun fact: while in college, I worked for Forever21 in a nearby shopping center called Fashion Island, though I almost transferred to work here!

Down the street, The CAMP takes on a bit of the opposite approach to South Coast Plaza. More laidback than posh, and set entirely outdoors, The CAMP focuses on independent retailers and restaurants. In fact, The CAMP is known as the first environmentally sensitive shopping campus in the entire US. I love coming here for a bite at Native Foods and drinks at the Wine Lab!

Across the street from The CAMP, The LAB (Little American Business) “Anti-Mall” is another hotspot that celebrates small, unique businesses and restaurants. Habana is a fantastic spot for delicious Cuban food here, and Ruin Bar next door is a fun little speakeasy-ish spot with delicious cocktails. The vibe is a bit shabby-chic here at The LAB, and again you’ll find tons more public art and installations on display throughout.

For a remote work option if you’re looking for a great coffee shop, The Den located at The LAB is one of Orange County’s original “alternative” cafes. That basically means it was one of the first spots in the area to serve up a robust menu of vegetarian and vegan options, and they’ve become a well-loved staple in the city for it. Plus, their coffee is tasty and they have wifi for guests!

Take a Stroll Through Orange County’s Parks and Trails

You might not think of a place like Costa Mesa as an outdoorsy destination, but there are definitely some hidden gems throughout if you love to get outside like I do. The Talbert Nature Preserve in Fairview Park is a beloved outdoor space in Costa Mesa featuring 210 acres of fields, hills, and leisurely trails. Some biking and walking trails here even lead out to the beach!

If you’re not opposed to driving outside of the city a bit, you should also check out Crystal Cove State Park and El Moro Canyon near Laguna Beach for some additional hiking opportunities and fantastic scenery.

Head to a Famous Orange County Beach

Speaking of Crystal Cove State Park, I can’t tell you about a trip to the heart of Orange County without also telling you about the beaches here! There’s no denying the popularity of (and pop culture love for) Southern California’s beaches. If you’re coming to Costa Mesa, you should plan on spending at least one afternoon heading to one of the many amazing beaches not far from the city.

Here are some of my favorite beaches near Costa Mesa you can get to in 30 minutes or less:

• Newport Beach (15 minutes)
• Corona Del Mar (15 minutes)
• Laguna Beach (30 minutes)
• Crystal Cove State Park (20 minutes)
• Huntington Beach (25 minutes)

Bonus: Rent a Duffy Boat!

There’s something so quintessentially Californian about renting a Duffy boat. If you didn’t know, a Duffy boat is a compact electric boat that typically comes with lounge seating, a table, and sometimes even a cooler and speaker system.

While some people own their own personal Duffy boats, it’s actually a popular activity to rent one for a couple hours and cruise around the harbor with friends (BYOB + BYOSnacks). Newport Beach and Huntington Harbour (near Huntington Beach) are two great places to do this! And no, you don’t need to be a pro at driving these boats – they’re pretty easy to pick up as long as you’re taking it slow and staying alert for other boats, paddleboarders, and kayakers in the area.

Huntington Harbour is one of my go-to spots not just for Duffy boat rentals, but for paddleboarding! The harbor here is centered around five man made islands with all kinds of bayfront houses, from modest to luxurious to downright quirky, and it’s fun to float along and admire. You can rent all kinds of watersports gear, from paddleboards to Duffy boats, from Huntington Harbour Boat Rentals .

Where to Stay in Costa Mesa

The Avenue of the Arts Hotel

During my time revisiting Costa Mesa, I stayed at the Avenue of the Arts Hotel , a Tribute Portfolio boutique-style hotel near the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts. This hotel has been high on my radar for good reason – it feels incredibly whimsical and unique, taking every measure to serve up City of the Arts-style hospitality and visual appeal. From the moment you enter the tall, purple lobby area, you’ll see what I mean.

The Avenue of the Arts Hotel is centrally located and incredibly close to most of the places I’ve named throughout this post. In fact, you could visit Segerstrom Center for the Arts and South Coast Plaza in just a few minutes on foot, and even The CAMP and The LAB if you’re up for a longer walk.

If you’re exhausted after a long day of sightseeing and don’t want to go out for a bite, the hotel has an onsite restaurant, the Silver Trumpet, that serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Where to Eat and Drink in Costa Mesa

• Toast Kitchen + Bakery : A tasty fusion spot with some incredible brunch and cocktails. My favorites are their beautiful ube French toast, and their orange chicken and black sesame waffles! Toast donates a portion of their proceeds to local charities, too.
• Habana Restaurant and Bar : A popular spot for Cuban bites, buzzy cocktails, and conversation at The LAB Anti-Mall
• Playa Mesa : Voted the best margarita, you can’t come here without trying one. My favorite is the watermelon!
• El Matador : A favorite spot of mine post-grad, El Matador serves Mexican staples and generous portions.
• Native Foods : My all-time favorite place for vegan food that doesn’t taste like vegan food.
• Pitfire Artisan Pizza : Personal wood-fired pizzas with the best crust!
• SOCIAL Costa Mesa : My favorite cocktail bar in the city
• Ruin Bar : A speakeasy-ish cocktail bar in The LAB, next to Habana
• The Wayfarer : A bar and live music venue
• Wild Goose Tavern : Small-batch whiskey, beer, and gourmet sausages.
• Taco Mesa : A fast-casual taco spot that I would ALWAYS be at. Such tasty margaritas & food.
• Water Grill : A beautiful, large restaurant serving fresh seafood
• The Hall Global Eatery : Global food options, opened by a Top Chef alum!
• Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee : The most mind-blowing doughnuts you’ll ever try. A must-visit.
• Breakfast Republic : Monster portions and all kinds of brunch options. I love that you can get “flights” of foods, like pancakes, in case you can’t decide on just one.
• Taco Maria : A popular taco restaurant in Costa Mesa
• Brewing Reserve of CA : A family-owned and operated brewery
• Green Cheek Beer Co. : A newer brewery to the city that’s already won global recognition for its delicious beers
• Gunwhale Ales : A brewery dedicated to traditional brewing methods, Gunwhale combines European tradition with bold California flair
• Salty Bear Brewing : A gorgeous brewery and beer garden, and you can get food delivered directly from restaurants at The CAMP
• Bootleggers Brewery : Located at The LAB, which you can also purchase and bring food from to enjoy with your beer

Tips to Know Before You Go

• WEATHER : Like most coastal Southern California destinations, the weather year-round is pretty fantastic in Costa Mesa, typically never exceeding or dropping far beyond 50 – 85 degrees. Southern California doesn’t usually rain, but be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of time just in case.
• WHEN TO GO : Because of the great weather Costa Mesa enjoys pretty much all year long, there isn’t really a bad time to visit! If anything, I will say that Costa Mesa (and Southern California in general) tend to experience “June Gloom” from May to June, which brings cloudy grey skies – though usually no rain. If blue skies are crucial for lifting your spirits, it may be best to plan a trip before or after June Gloom passes.
• TRANSPORTATION : Costa Mesa is a buzzy, centrally located city in Orange County, which means not only are you able to easily access this city and drive from place to place, but ride-sharing (Uber, Lyft) and taxis are also easily available if you’re visiting without a car. Public transportation does exist, but exploring by car, on foot, or even by bike are the best ways to go in my opinion!

I would love to visit California one day! I hadn’t heard of this place until I read your blog, but I would love to explore it and eat in those restaurants 🙂

The street art is super cool in Costa Mesa! There wasn’t as much of it when I lived here so it was awesome to see how colorful it was getting!

Costa Mesa is a beautiful area! I loved the restaurants there and I didn’t know about Noguchi Garden! I’ll have to see it next time I go there. 🙂

I didn’t know about it either at first, not to mention what it symbolized! Definitely an easy spot to miss if you aren’t looking for it, but it’s pretty close to South Coast Plaza!

10 Fun Things to Do in Costa Mesa, CA (the OC’s Coolest City) | Costa Mesa Travel Guide

Looking for things to do in Costa Mesa? From the coolest shopping, delicious food, and unique art installations, here are all the things you must check out in Costa Mesa!

Whether you are looking for world-class shopping, award-winning dining, or an acclaimed arts scene, there are plenty of things to do in Costa Mesa! 

Having grown up in nearby Los Angeles , I’d always been familiar with Costa Mesa, but had never really known much about it beyond the fact that it was home to South Coast Plaza. In recent years, I’d started hearing about the trendy vibe of Costa Mesa and I knew I’d have to explore it more (especially as I recently made the move from San Francisco to Orange County and it was now in my own backyard).

So, I was super excited when my friends over at Travel Costa Mesa invited me for a staycation weekend, and I finally got to fully experience all the awesome things to do in Costa Mesa. I had such an amazing time discovering all the unique independent businesses, discovering all the cool art and colorful murals, and most importantly – eating alllll the things (an Eatcation® is my favorite kind of vacation, anyone with me here?)!

Located in the heart of Orange County, Costa Mesa is often overlooked because of other destinations in the area, such as the beaches or Disneyland, which is a shame because it really has so much to offer – it is home to some of the best things to do in Orange County ! It’s still got the feel of a hidden gem because even locals don’t know just how cool Costa Mesa is (yet).

Known as the “City of the Arts,” Costa Mesa has a renowned fine and performing arts scene, as well as colorful murals and public art installations scattered throughout the city. In addition, it is also home to Orange County’s only two Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as the nation’s third largest shopping mall.

It’s also only 30 minutes to Disneyland, as little as 15 minutes away to the nearby beach cities (such as Laguna Beach and San C lemente ), and 20 minutes to historic San Juan Capistrano , making it an ideal place to center yourself during your visit to Orange County!

About Costa Mesa, California

Nestled in between Los Angeles and San Diego, Orange County draws more than 50 million visitors annually, who come to the area for its sunny weather, famed beaches, and Disneyland. At the heart of Orange County is Costa Mesa, known as the City of the Arts.

Costa Mesa got its beginnings as a semi-rural farming town, and was originally known as Harper. It got its current name, which means “coastal tableland,” in reference to the fact that the city stands on a plateau by the coast.

The city was incorporated in 1953, and has blossomed into a suburban city that is home to about 113,000 residents. In addition, it has developed a reputation for being a mecca for world-class shopping, renowned dining options, and an acclaimed theater and arts scene. It is also home to the OC Fair, which takes place every summer.

When to Visit Costa Mesa

As with most locations in Southern California, Costa Mesa enjoys year-round sunshine, so there is really no bad time to visit! 

Summer brings the hottest temperatures and the longest days, which means more daylight hours to enjoy all the fun things to do in Costa Mesa! Keep in mind that Southern California is famous for its “June Gloom” in May and June, which brings overcast skies in the morning (bring a light sweater or jacket) – however, this usually burns off by afternoon.

Spring and fall are, well, pretty much like summer – California doesn’t get much in the way of seasons. It does sometimes rain in the winter, but temperatures stay relatively mild – highs usually hover around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and lows rarely get below the 50s, making Costa Mesa the perfect place to escape to for some winter sun.

Location and Getting Around

Costa Mesa is located less than an hour away (~40 miles) from Los Angeles, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or day trip. It is also 86 miles (~1 hour, 15 minutes) away from San Diego.

It is also located in close proximity to Disneyland (~20 minutes), and just minutes from the beach (it shares its southern border with Newport Beach, and Huntington Beach is only 7 miles away). It is also located only 4 miles away from John Wayne International Airport, which connects it to many domestic destinations, as well as cities in Mexico and Canada. This makes Costa Mesa an ideal place to base yourself during any visit to Orange County.

Public transportation does exist but is not a very efficient way to get around, so having a vehicle is recommended for maximum flexibility. If you do not wish to drive, you can easily get around via Uber or Lyft. The theater district and downtown are also fairly walkable.

Things to Do in Costa Mesa

Go on a self-guided art walk

One of the best things to do in Costa Mesa is to go on a self-guided art walk of some of the most notable public art in the city. It is a fun way to spend an afternoon, and the perfect (mostly) outdoors activity.

The tour takes you to 20 different sculptures, art installations, and other pieces that are nestled within the city’s theater district. Recently, a free audio guide was added to the tour, which gives you background information about the art and the artists who created them, as well as the history of Costa Mesa.

The pieces you will see on the tour were commissioned by Henry Segerstrom, a businessman and philanthropist who is seen as sort of the “founder” of Costa Mesa. It was super interesting to hear how he transformed the city from a humble farming town into what it is today, and how he left his mark on the city by donating land, financial resources, and creating a vibrant cultural life.

In addition, the art itself was super cool and represents a variety of styles and aesthetics, from the bright stained glass Sun Ribbon, to the colorfully abstract Ram’s Head, to classically styled fountain sculptures.

Shop til you drop at South Coast Plaza

Perhaps one of the most famous things to do in Costa Mesa is to visit South Coast Plaza , a world-class shopping center which draws visitors from all over the world (there’s even a currency exchange booth here, as well as multilingual signage).

Shopaholics will rejoice and find this one of the best things to do in Costa Mesa, as South Coast Plaza is home to over 250 shops. You’ll find everything from luxury boutiques like Chanel, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, as well as everyday brands such as Uniqlo, Banana Republic, and Zara. It is the largest shopping mall on the West Coast, as well as the third largest in the US.

If you need some energy for your shopping extravaganza, South Coast Plaza is also home to over award-winning 30 restaurants, offering everything from fine dining to casual eateries. Some of my favorites spots here are Din Tai Fung (for the soup dumplings), Marugame Udon (for fast and CHEAP hand-pulled udon), Terrace by Mix Mix (small plates featuring Filipino fusion cuisine – also the space is beautiful!), and the Hall Global Eatery (international cuisine featuring three different concepts, helmed by a Top Chef alum).

If you happen to be in Costa Mesa during the holiday season, be sure to check out the holiday decorations here, especially the giant Christmas tree, which stands underneath the stunning stained glass dome in the Jewel Court, right outside Macy’s.

Find some zen at the Noguchi Garden

Also known as California Scenario, the Noguchi Garden (also known as California Scenario) is recognized as one of the most important sculpture gardens in the US, as well as one of the most important public spaces in California and visiting it is one of the best things to do in Costa Mesa. 

Created by famed sculpture artist Isamu Noguchi and commissioned by Henry Segerstrom, the Noguchi Garden offers a tranquil oasis in the middle of a bustling city. It is easy to miss if you don’t know to look for it – it is nestled within a cluster of office buildings, away from the street, and is a hidden gem within the city.

The garden’s minimalistic designs are intended to symbolize the diverse landscapes of California, and incorporate the use of native plants and materials. It is comprised of six elements –  Forest Walk, Land Use, Desert Land, Water Source, Water Use and Energy Fountain. The garden’s centerpiece is the Spirit of the Lima Bean, made of 15 giant granite rocks cut to fit together, and symbolizing the Noguchi’s friendship with Segerstrom, who made his fortune in his family’s lima bean business.

One of the best things to do in Costa Mesa is to have a little picnic here and enjoy takeout from one of the nearby restaurants. It is also a great spot for people watching and a popular spot with local photographers, so chances are you will see some kind of photo shoot taking place while you hang out here.

Check out the LAB Anti-Mall

What once housed a night-vision goggle factory has been creatively transformed into a trendy shopping center known as the LAB Anti-Mall . The LAB stands for “Little American Business,” and houses a collection of eclectic boutiques, cool cafes, and a variety of cool art installations. Visiting the LAB has always been one of my favorite things to do in Costa Mesa because I’ve always loved the colorful, hipster vibe! 

The LAB strives to offer a unique retail experience which eschews monotony and embraces a vibrant community of art, music, and fashion lovers. You’ll find an array of trendy retailers here to cater to your inner hipster, such as Urban Outfitters, a vintage record store ( Creme Tangerine Records ) as well as fun little shops that are housed in vintage Airstream trailers. It also plays host to a number of events, such as live music and makers’ markets.

Foodies will also enjoy hanging out at the LAB, as it is home to some of Costa Mesa’s restaurants, cafes, and bars. Be sure to check out Habana for some amazing Cuban food, Bootlegger’s for some craft brews, and Good Town Doughnuts for some gourmet doughnuts. Cocktail lovers also should check out the Ruin , an eclectic speakeasy bar, and serious sushi fiends must check out Hana Re , one of the OC’s only two Michelin-starred restaurants.

If you are in need of some new Instagram photos, you absolutely must stop by the LAB, as it is chock full of colorful murals and Instagrammable backdrops! Two of my favorite photo spots here are the brightly colored paint cans and the CD tunnel.

Hang out at the CAMP

Directly across the street from the LAB is the CAMP , a retail campus which focuses on green, eco-friendly businesses. The shops and eateries here are dedicated to fostering an active, healthy lifestyle, mindful of the environment and with a strong connection to the local community. 

Like the LAB, there is a strong focus on unique independent businesses, some of which are housed in vintage Airstream trailers. Green is the theme at the CAMP, and you’ll find this echoed in everything here from the abundance of plants found throughout the campus, to the environmentally friendly retailers and restaurants.

You’ll find lots of eco-friendly boutiques, many of which sell wellness products and promote ethical brands, as well as organic eateries and cafes, and fitness studios. Some of my favorite shops at the CAMP are Seed Peoples Market , which curates products from a mix of eco-friendly and ethical brands; and Organic Designs by Aggelige, an Airstream trailer that is an oasis of plants and succulents.

Hungry? The CAMP is home to tons of delicious restaurants, bars, and cafes, and visiting them is one of the most delicious things to do in Costa Mesa. Some favorites include the trendy Mesa Lounge , the award-winning Old Vine Cafe , Blackmarket Bakery , and the Wine Lab .

Go on a mural crawl

Costa Mesa has so many cool murals around town, representing a variety of artists and styles. I always love to check out the street art wherever I am, so this was one of the things to do in Costa Mesa that I was super excited about, and they sure did not disappoint!

If you’re looking for some cool backdrops for your Instagram photos, check out the below spots:

• Triangle Square (@ Harbor Blvd and W 19th St): This is the home of the pretty, floral Costa Mesa Bloom mural, which is by Aaron Glasson and was commissioned by Travel Costa Mesa .
• Canvas Costa Mesa (3090 Bristol St) : You’ll find several murals and art installations inside this office park, including the City of the Arts mural on the parking garage, a geometric piece by Teddy Kelly , the Calypso mural by Charmaine Olivia (right across from it), and a cool floral stained glass panel, and the cool “Butter” mural hanging on the parking garage by Ali Sabet .
• Social (512 W 19th St, ) : Here, you will find the fun Costa Mesa, Have a Nice Day wall, and an amazing Kobe Bryant mural by Andaluz .
• Strut Bar & Club (719 W 19th St) : You’ll find an amazing Dolly Parton mural outside
• Lion & Lamb Coffee (3186 Pullman St) : There is a super fun floral + paisley mural outside, and a pretty pastel floral mural inside

Attend an event at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Costa Mesa is known for its renowned arts scene, and is home to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts , the premier performing arts and theater complex in Orange County. Attending a performance or an event here is one of the most popular things to do in Costa Mesa!

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts houses six performance venues, with the main two being the Segerstrom Hall and the Renee & Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The Center has played host to performances from many international dance companies, symphony orchestras, contemporary artists, jazz and cabaret performers, and touring Broadway shows. Some of the performers who have graced the stage here include Yo Yo Ma, Tony Bennett, and the New York City Opera. 

The Center is also an architectural gem, with its jewel being the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The hall features a magnificent Portugese limestone and glass facade. Within the glass walls is an impressive foyer and staircase, adorned with  Swarovski crystal LED globes and 300 silver lavalieres hanging from the ceiling in graduated lengths. Also be sure to check out the impressive “Firebird” sculpture that is integrated into the design of the Segerstrom Hall.

In addition, the Center also hosts various outdoor fitness activities in the Plaza. To see what events are coming up soon, check out the calendar here .

Check out SOCO and the OC Mix

Foodies and shopaholics alike will enjoy browsing the mix of unique retailers and restaurants at the SOCO and the OC MIx . This is one of the most fun things to do in Costa Mesa because it is part food hall, part design experience, and part pop-up retail experience.

The 70 curated shops and eateries are meant to inspire your inner foodie, designer, and creative spirit. You’ll find lots of unique specialty shops and artisan boutiques selling everything from cocktail supplies and barware , handcrafted cheeses , olive oil , spices , and more. You’ll also find home decor shops, clothing boutiques, and more. (Hint: it’s the perfect place to shop for some unique gifts!) 

You’ll also find some of the places to eat and drink in the area, including Taco Maria , with acclaimed Michelin-starred fine Mexican cuisine; Shuck Oyster bar , with fresh oysters and seafood; and Portola Coffee Roasters , which has my favorite coffee in Orange County.

Spend the day at the OC Fair

One of the best things to do in Costa Mesa in the summer is to attend the OC Fair .

Going to the fair is always one of my favorite things to do every summer, and the OC Fair is one of my favorites! You’ll have so much fun embracing your inner kid again and going on all the carnival rides, playing some games and trying to win a stuff (spoiler alert: I failed and didn’t win any), and eating all the outrageous food items (some favorites were the deep-fried Snickers bars and Hot Cheetos cheese tots).

They also have various events and concerts scheduled throughout the fair, perfect for some summer fun!

If you aren’t in Costa Mesa during the Fair, the fairgrounds also plays hosts to various events and festivals throughout the year, so be sure to check out their calendar for some cool things to do in Costa Mesa.

Where to Eat and Drink in Costa Mesa

As I said earlier, my favorite kind of vacation is an Eatcation® and eating your way through the city is one of the best things to do in Costa Mesa! The city is a foodie haven, and there is something for everyone here, from Michelin-starred restaurants (the only two in the OC), celebrity chef-owned restaurants, hole-in-the-wall gems, and trendy cafes and dessert shops.

Here are some of my picks for where to eat and drink in Costa Mesa:

Toast Kitchen & Bakery

Every time I suggest eating at a trendy spot, my boyfriend kinda rolls his eyes, insisting that it’s going to be overhyped. (And I will begrudgingly admit that he’s right half the time).

So when I first suggested that we eat at Toast, he rolled his eyes – especially with that hour wait time on a Sunday morning.

Once we dined, however, he was sold – he even declared it the best brunch that he’s ever had and has been raving about it to all our friends and family ever since we’ve eaten there!

Toast serves up Filipino fusion brunch fare, and they do fusion WELL. The Sisig burrito here is addictive, and the Ube French toast is absolutely decadent and a must-order!

Mesa Lounge

Located inside the CAMP, Mesa Lounge has a chic atmosphere that is reminiscent of a trendy nightclub, complete with a live DJ. We loved the vibe here and had fun pretending to be young, hip people instead of the old farts that we really are.

Mesa Lounge has a selection of adventurous small plates, intended to be shared over cocktails. We had the calamari and mussels here and both were delicious. We also ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert and it was to die for.

The star at Mesa Lounge is the cocktails, which were creative and well-made. Our favorite was the Offshore Account, which was made of rum, banana cordial, passion fruit, lemongrass, grapefruit, mint, and cinnamon, and came in a fun fish bowl!

I’d been hearing about Habana for awhile now and finally had the chance to try it – and it did not disappoint! Habana serves modern Cuban cuisine in an eclectic atmosphere. It has a beautiful patio space, and was named as one of the top spots for outdoor dining in the US by TripAdvisor.

The lechon asado (roast pork) is absolutely to die for here – the meat is super tender and almost melts in your mouth, and it comes slathered in an addictive, garlicky sauce (which I had to keep myself from licking off the plate).

The cocktails here are fantastic as well – be sure to try a sangria or mojito!

Old Vine Kitchen

Located inside the CAMP, Old Vine Kitchen features the very best of food, wine, and cocktails in a non-pretentious, casual atmosphere. The eclectic menu focuses on using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

We had brunch here (aka the best meal of the day), and it was amazing! We loved that Old Vine took the brunch classics and put a unique twist on them – for example, a savory French toast (absolutely delicious), or an omelette with lengua (which was sooo tender).

They also have fantastic cocktails and an awesome rooftop patio space!

Outpost Kitchen

Outpost Kitchen is meant to recreate the vibe of a 70s Australian beach cafe, with a focus on using fresh, organic ingredients. It was such a cool space, with upcycled furniture, and an amazing chevron display behind the bar!

The menu features a tasty selection of brunch items, such as pancakes, avocado toast, salads, and bowls. I had the Hawaiian bowl here, which came with pineapple, chorizo, spinach, cilantro, avocado, and a fried egg over brown rice and it was super fresh and delicious!

The cocktails here were soooo pretty! We had to order a second round just to see what they would look like (they did not disappoint). The best part was that they tasted just as good (or even better) as they looked, using fresh juices and ingredients in them as well!

Dessert + Coffee Spots

Dessert and coffee are two of my favorite things, and Costa Mesa has amazing options for both! One of my favorite things to do in Costa Mesa during my Eatcation® was to go on a little coffee/dessert tour. If you are a coffee/sugar fiend like I am, then be sure to check out these spots:

The Straw Modern Milkshakes

Best milkshakes everrrr! Travel & Leisure magazine rated the Straw as having one of the best milkshakes in the US , and I wholeheartedly agree! They have boozy shakes as well, and a fun outdoor space with fire pits. Also be sure to peek at the Ryan Gosling poster in the bathroom.

Dough & Arrow

I first stumbled upon Dough & Arrow while grabbing some ramen next door, and I was definitely swayed by the sign advertising cookies and boba. intended to only get one, but couldn’t resist and walked out with five. You can’t go wrong with any of the cookies here, but you MUST try the Smookie – which is basically a s’more baked into a cookie (and yes, it’s as good as it sounds!). 3033 Bristol St. Suite Q

Sidecar Doughnuts

Sidecar Doughnuts makes some of the best I’ve ever had – they are super fresh and baked every hour. There are several Sidecar locations throughout So-Cal, but the Costa Mesa one is the original. The huckleberry is the signature doughnut here, but you can’t go wrong with any of the seasonal flavors either. 270 E 17th St #18

Stella Jean’s Ice Cream

Stella Jean’s Ice Cream is located right next to Sidecar and has a selection of unique flavors handcrafted using the finest ingredients. I got the mango sticky rice here and it was absolutely to die for! 270 E 17th St. #16

Fill Bakeshop

The best mochi donuts in the area! Fill Bakeshop has some unique rotating flavors such as white rabbit candy (sort of like a creamy vanilla flavor), guava cheesecake, halo halo (a Filipino dessert), banana chai, and more. They also have mochi cookies! 1767 Newport Blvd

Coffee Dose

Coffee with an attitude! Coffee Dose is “not your grandma’s coffee shop,” and offers therapeutic lattes and cold brews, infused with things like lavender syrup and collagen (they have “normal” coffee and espresso drinks as well). Each cup comes with a sleeve adorned with a cheeky statement.

The Flagship location is also *super* Instagrammable, has a variety of food items (try the honey ricotta toast – soooo good!), and even serve cocktails (the espresso martini is a must!) 2675 Irvine Ave suite e, Costa Mesa, CA 92627

Portola Coffee Roasters

Portola makes perhaps the BEST coffee in Orange County, specializing in handcrafted, organic specialty coffee. Many of the baristas who have worked here have gone on to open some of the other great coffee spots in OC as well! | 3313 Hyland Ave

Philz Coffee

Philz Coffee was always a favorite when I lived in SF, so I was glad to see they had a location in the OC in Costa Mesa. They specialize in individual drip coffee – you can choose from dozens of different beans, and customize the sweetness and cream levels to your liking. The mint mojito is a favorite on warm days, and I tend to go for the Tesora if I’m in the mood for something hot. The coffee is STRONG though – I’m always bouncing off the walls whenever I have one! 3420 Bristol St

• Marugame Udon : When I lived in SF, I lived right next to a Marugame and I ate it at least once a week. They serve udon and tempura fast food-style, but make the noodles right in front of you. • Hakata Ikkousha : You might know that I’m a bit of a ramen snob , and Hakata Ikkousha has some of my favorite ramen in the OC. The tonkotsu broth here is super creamy and flavorful. 3033 Bristol St
• Terrace by Mix Mix: Creative small plates with a mix of Filipino, French, and Italian flavors. The terrace here is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! 3333 Bear St #316

We stayed at the Avenue of the Arts Hotel , and really enjoyed our stay! The property is conveniently located near the Segerstrom Center and South Coast Plaza, making it a central location for exploring all the best things to do in Costa Mesa!

The boutique hotel is also beautiful, and was named one of the most Instagrammable hotels in Orange County! Its design takes inspiration from the local arts scene, creating a space to be the very best expression of yourself. We loved the beautiful lobby area, the succulent wall outside, and the pool area.

The rooms are also stylishly decorated, with plush furnishings and comfortable beds. The best part was the view, though – our room was on the top floor overlooking the lake and it was a beautiful sight to wake up to!

Be sure to also check out the Silver Trumpet Restaurant . I tend to usually be wary of hotel restaurants, but this one exceeded all my expectations (and beyond!). We had a few appetizers and cocktails here one night before dinner, and they were awesome! It was also lovely to be able to sit and relax on their lakeside patio and take in the view.

We also had breakfast the next morning, and really enjoyed that as well – the eggs were super fluffy, and the breakfast potatoes were some of the best I’ve ever had!

This looks like such a fun area to visit! I'll keep this in mind when I'm planning my next trip to California.

Ah I'm swooning over how incredible Costa Mesa looks! I'm in love with all of the colourful murals and sculptures! I love the concept behind LAB Anti-Mall, it's such a fascinating idea! And the local food looks delicious too! I'd love to see Costa Mesa in person one day. I can see why it is considered the coolest city! Thanks for the great guide!

Costa Mesa, CA seems like such a cool, funky city! I never thought of Orange County as having so much personality, TBH. But I'd absolutely love to explore Costa Mesa, especially for its street art and public art.

Happened upon this place by accident. Healthy grill next door closes at 6pm. This place may be small, but it is mighty. Got the blackened fish taco combo with rice & beans. I wasn't ready for how delicious the tacos were. They were perfectly seasoned with a kick but not so much spice that you're overwhelmed. You know how other places like to pile on the cabbage to hide how little fish they give you? Definitely not the case here. These were good sized portions. I was full off 2 tacos. But the rice and beans were so freaking tasty. I stuffed myself but I cleaned that plate. Oh and there's a salsa bar!!!! The thin red sauce, and both greens were fire. Wasn't a fan of the mild chunky salsa, but i took the others to go. Definitely be returning to try something else next time. So glad we gave it a try.

The tacos there are one of the best in OC that I ever have. Better than the previous owners. This place had two previous owners before.

Great new place for a quick bite. The service was impeccable, and the food was just like advertised. It is a hidden jem. We got flautas and tacos de asada, the taste was good and crunchy on the flautas, and the salsa bar is also filled with great options. Will be definitely coming back when in the area.

My boyfriend and I decided to try La Laguna on a Sunday afternoon! We split the California burrito which comes with carne asada, bacon, shrimp, fries, guac, beans, and your choice of red or green sauce and sour cream drizzled on top! This was the perfect amount of food to split! Every order comes with chips and of course we had to upgrade to an horchata!! Service was great and the food was delicious! Can't wait to come back and try the churros!

Wet California burrito!!

Finally some great Mexican food in Costa Mesa! Prices are reasonable, breakfast is delicious, and the service is great. Salsas are excellent, too. Definitely a place we'll come back to. :)

Loved the old restaurant that was here but this restaurant is spot on also, prices are cheap and portion sizes are good. In addition Salsa bar has good options as well.

La Laguna Grill took over ownership of the previous El Mesquitito Grill. My hubby and I were regulars of the previous restaurant, and we're glad to see and taste that the menu has not changed. This visit we ordered the shredded beef enchiladas plate, carnitas burrito, and bean and cheese burrito. All were delicious! Same great food and service under new ownership. We will definitely remain regulars!

I was sad to see El Mequitito Grill close. It was my go to place for Mexican take-out. The new place is legit. Similar but different. I ordered the Birria plate (based on the limited photos of the food on Yelp). It was delicious. The aroma in my car driving home - I knew something good was waiting. Not sure what the deal is with new ownership. The green salsa that I liked is exactly the same. But now with Birria. Come give this place a try!

I was initially disappointed when El Mesquetito closed, as it had been my go-to spot for breakfast burritos. However, today I decided to give La Laguna a try, and I'm delighted to say that I prefer it. They offer the same delicious thick green salsa that El Mesquetito had, which is my favorite. I tried their Laguna breakfast burrito, and it exceeded my expectations! It's now my favorite breakfast burrito. The burrito is generously sized and incredibly satisfying. With a diverse menu to choose from, I'm already looking forward to my next visit.
