15. Visit the Roseberry House

The Roseberry House is also called the Roseberry Homestead or the Walter Gess House. It is a rough-cut stone Georgian-style house constructed around 1765 to 1783.

John Roseberry bought the land in 1787 after it had been taken from an American Revolution Loyalist called John Tabor Kempe.

The Roseberry House, a two-and-a-half story, five-bay home, has a linked one-and-a-half stone kitchen, a large cooking fireplace, and three chimneys.

It was added to the State and National Register of Historic Places. However, it fell into ruins and was sealed up for over ten years.

Luckily, the Phillipsburg Area Historical Society (PAHS) helped in stopping the historic home from getting destroyed. Roseberry House is in Phillipsburg, NJ, 30 minutes from Frenchtown, NJ.

22. Stroll around the Van Nest-Hoff-Vannatta Farmstead

The initial 768 acres were first inhabited in 1763 by John Van Nest; the subsequent owners were Abel and John Hoff, and lastly, William M. Vannatta in the early 1800s.

The Farmland is among the biggest farmsteads in the region, showing its owner’s wealth. These structures, including the farmstead’s 1824 bank barn, 1700s stone house, and early 1800s out kitchen, symbolize their eras. 

The Van Nest-Hoff-Vannatta Farmstead also has five additional frame structures dating back to the late 1800s to early 1900s, including a smokehouse, a privy, and three wagon houses.

In 2004, the Van Nest-Hoff-Vannatta Farmstead was added to both the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places for its agricultural and architectural importance in the region.

Villa Milagro, which translates to “a place or house of miracles,” is exactly how owners and visitors see the beautifully green mountain views of the Villa Milagro Vineyards.

Villa Milagro , one of the smallest wineries in New Jersey, was founded in 2007. In early 2001, Steve and Audrey purchased a 104-acre cornfield, constructed a homestead, grew a 10-acre vineyard in 2003, and began a winery.

They kept things simple and oversaw almost everything by themselves. Audrey’s love for food led her to create a selection of wines that complement an extensive range of menus, cuisines, and food styles.

Walters Parks is one of the city’s main parks with athletic fields, courts, and playgrounds, perfectly positioned to serve the whole historic and scenic town.

This park has a pool, an amphitheater, picnic and play areas, a pavilion, basketball and tennis courts, a ½ mile working track, outdoor fitness equipment, and baseball and football fields.

New Jersey Road Trip Stop: Frenchtown

Frenchtown, New Jersey is a picturesque town that makes for a great stop on road trips between NYC/NJ and  parts of Pennsylvania. Its name comes from the many french families that followed Paul Henri Mallet-Prevost, a Swiss refugee from the French Revolution, who moved there in 1794.

Located on the Delaware River, Frenchtown is tiny – as in, you can cover the downtown area in about one minute. But it’s super cute, and the perfect pit stop for lunch and a little shopping.

It’s easy to get there: …if you have a car. But if you don’t, you can take the Trans-Bridge Lines bus from NYC.

It’s not as far away as you think: Frenchtown is an hour and a half drive from both NYC and Philadelphia.

Here are some things to do in Frenchtown, NJ.

There are quite a few spots to grab a bite in Frenchtown. Frenchtown Cafe (44 Bridge Street) is a friendly diner that offers all the classics, from eggs to french toast and burgers, with their own delicious twists. Bonus points: they have gluten free bread. Get there early if you want breakfast, and prepare for a crowd: it’s a local favorite.

The Bridge Cafe (8 Bridge Street) is right next to the bridge coming from Pennsylvania, and overlooks the Delaware River. It’s an ideal spot for dining on a sunny day if you can grab a table outside!

The Bridge Cafe was originally Frenchtown’s train depot and the walls and ceiling are still composed of the original pressed tin. If you’re dining inside, enjoy soup, salad and baked goods on the old waiting platform.

Lovin Oven  (62A Trenton Ave) is another dining gem of Frenchtown. If you’re seeking a meal made with fresh, healthy ingredients, I loved that they offer numerous creative salads, gluten free options and dishes made with grass fed, hormone-free beef.

Frenchtown is a must-visit if you have gifts you need to buy. There are so many cute little shops filled with home decor items, antiques, jewelry, fashion and other trinkets.

My favorite was The Book Garden (28 Bridge Street), a community bookstore located in an 1860s Victorian home. In the front room, you’ll find more contemporary adult fiction, but in the back they have a nice selection of classic children’s stories. Head to the kitchen for older, harder-to-find and collectible books. Shopping in the kitchen? Fun!

Jasper & June (24 Bridge Street) is another local boutique, but this one is all about giving back. Each item sold helps make a difference, whether it’s using recycled and sustainable materials, creating jobs for women in developing countries or directly donating a percentage to charity. The buyer here has some great taste becuase I wanted to buy, like, everything in the store. From handmade greeting cards to soft men’s tees, stylish  scarves and chic throw pillows, I could have completed my Christmas shopping for the next five years in one stop!

Across the street you’ll find Left Bank Home (19 & 33 Bridge Street), a decor and furniture shop filled with Parisian-inspired items. We are in FRENCHtown, after all! It’s a great shopping spot to find a hostess gift if you’re en route to visit friends.

Weather permitting, one of the more active things to do in Frenchtown is rent a bike from Cycle Corner (52 French Street) and cycle along the Delaware River. Or, you can simply take a scenic stroll to burn off lunch before you hop back in the car!

ArtYard is closed to the public on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.

Admission & Ticketing

Admission to our gallery is free of charge, with a suggested donation of $5 per person.

Advanced registration is highly encouraged for programming and concerts in the McDonnell Theater. Patrons may show up 30 minutes before opening to see if tickets are available at the door. For ArtYard’s ticket, refund, cancellation, and other policies, please review our FAQs .

ArtYard is located at 13 Front Street in Frenchtown, NJ , in the Delaware River Valley, just over an hour’s drive from New York City and Philadelphia. Directly across from our building is ArtYard’s parking lot. Visitors may also park at ArtYard’s Workshop at 62A Trenton Ave. In addition to street parking and restaurant parking for patrons, you may use this map for three public parking lots in Frenchtown.

By car, Frenchtown is easily accessed via Routes 78, 22, 31, and 202. Get detailed directions to ArtYard through Google Maps .

By bus, the Trans-Bridge Line runs multiple daily trips from Port Authority, Wall Street, and Newark Airport to Clinton , a 20-minute drive from Frenchtown. Ride-hailing apps Lyft and Uber are easily accessed from this station. Visit Trans-Bridge Lines for schedules.

By train, NJ Transit trains from New York and other New Jersey stations arrive regularly on the Raritan Valley line at the nearby High Bridge and Annandale stations, a 25-minute car ride away. SEPTA trains from Philadelphia and other Pennsylvania destinations arrive regularly at the Doylestown Station, a 30-minute car ride away. Ride-hailing apps Lyft and Uber are typically available from these stations. Visit NJ Transit and SEPTA for schedules.

Frenchtown is a historic rivertown located 75 minutes from both Manhattan and Philadelphia. Perched on the Delaware River a stone’s throw from bucolic Bucks County, Frenchtown is a hidden gem that has attracted bohemians and bicyclists for generations.

Frenchtown’s riverside bike paths, hiking trails, historic hotels, local restaurants, cafes and emerging art scene upriver and down offer an enticing range of options to visitors.

ArtYard is committed to providing a welcoming experience to all who visit by offering services that make our programming as accessible as possible.

Patrons with limited mobility.

ArtYard’s gallery and theater are wheelchair accessible via the main river-facing entrance, and all levels are accessible by elevator. We offer designated areas for wheelchair users who want to remain in their wheelchair, and for those who prefer to transfer to a theater seat. Van and designated accessible parking spaces are in the ArtYard parking areas.

Patrons who are blind or visually impaired

Braille signage is available throughout ArtYard, including elevators, restrooms, stairwells and emergency exits.

Patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing

We do not currently provide assisted listening devices.

Sign Language Interpretation

ASL Interpretation is available by request for certain performances with two weeks’ or more advance notice. Call 908-996-5018  Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM, or email [email protected] .

All restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Restrooms are located on the second floor of ArtYard Center.

Service Animals

We’re happy to welcome your registered service animal. Please contact us first so we can be prepared for your arrival.

ArtYard Center

Visitors are welcome to park in ArtYard’s designated visitor parking lot at 7 Lott Street adjacent to the building for the duration of your visit. Bikes can be locked on the rack in front of the building, facing the river.

ArtYard Workshop

Visitors are welcome to park on the side or rear of the lot. Please respect Studio Route 29 customer parking.

Since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, ArtYard continues to adjust our health and safety policies based on state and federal data and in alignment with the practices of art centers in the tri-state area to ensure the safest possible environment for our visitors, artists, staff, and the greater Frenchtown community.

ArtYard reserves the right to alter safety protocols at any time and at its sole discretion, including but not limited to vaccines, masks, venue capacity, and entrance requirements as it deems appropriate.

Visitors to ArtYard’s exhibition space during open gallery hours are welcome to wear masks.

McDonnell Theater

All audience members attending events in the McDonnell Theater are encouraged to wear masks.

Hand Cleanliness

We have hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the building and encourage visitors to use hand sanitizer upon entry and exit.

Good Judgement

We ask all audiences, staff, and artists to monitor their health and stay home if they are exhibiting any Covid and/or flu-like symptoms. It is essential that you do not visit if you are unwell.

ArtYard offers gallery tours and guided walkthroughs of our gallery and campus to school groups and interested parties on Wednesday and other dates upon request.

When was the last time you visited Hunterdon County, New Jersey? Have you ever been to Frenchtown? This town along the Delaware River has been named to a list of small towns around America that are worth a visit, including right here in the Garden State.

The best of small-town America

Love Exploring posted a recent article that talked about "small-town" America and places to visit. "In every US state, there are plenty of overlooked places, from relaxed spots with an Old West vibe to smart villages packed with galleries and boutiques."

When it comes to New Jersey, Love Exploring selected a town in Hunterdon County that's located along the Delaware River. The small town of Frenchtown was selected as a great place to visit. "Gloriously quaint, the main area of this small town has a distinctly European feel about it, with streets lined with little cafés. The town celebrates its French heritage with a big Bastille Day bash in summer and the outdoors is a pull all year-round. The town spreads out along the Delaware River and it's a popular place for cycling too."

According to the town website, Frenchtown has a deep history. "Frenchtown Borough was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 4, 1867. "Frenchtown’s connection to the arts goes back to the 1930s when authors James Agee and Nathanael West decided it was a good place to write."
