Johor Johor is the southern most state of Peninsular Malaysia, with a long coastline flanked by the Straits of Melaka on its west and the South China Sea on the east. Johor Bharu, the state capital, sits at the southern tip. Its vast landscape is characterised by plantations of pineapple, rubber, coconut and paPainah oil, punctuated by spectacular national parks, quaint fishing villages, and 5-star sea-side resorts.

Danga Bay is the largest recreational park in Johor. The park is situated close to the Istana Bukit Serene . Danga Bay is usually the choice of location for events during the festive season. The Desaru Beach is a 22-kilometer long beach that is well maintained. The beach offers the beautiful scenery of the South China Sea with tropical rainforest in the background.

Pulau Aur , known in English as Aur Island , lies about 65 km east of Mersing, Johor. It is part of the Johor Marine Park. Its corals, lagoons and offshore pools make it a tourist attraction. It has for many years also always been a frequent stopover point for fishermen. Another great place for sun and fun would be at the Sibu Islands . It is actually made of an archipelago of several islands that make up the Sibu Islands . There are numerous activities at the Sibu Island . They include fishing trips, jungle trekking and many more. If you like the outdoors, the Endau Rompin National Park is a must. This is the second national park after the Taman Negara National Park in Pahang. The Endau Rompin is an 80,000 hectares of land occupied with lush greenery and a diverse group of fauna. A trek into the national park will give you the opportunity to watch the rare sights of the leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, long-tail macaques, tapirs and many more. Entry into the park will require a special permit from the Johor National Park Corporation. Thus, do make sure you have that before you visit the park.

Discover the ancient ruins of Wat Pa Sak just a short 200-meter walk from the main city gate (Pratu Chiang Saen). This historic site is an archaeologist’s heaven and includes the ruins of seven monuments, including the revered chedi which dates back to the mid 14th century.

Chiang Saen Lake

Hop on a bike, and head out to Chiang Saen Lake for a fun-filled day of natural beauty. The lake is a popular bird watching spot and is particularly famous for waterfowl and waders that migrate to the lake between November and February each year. Wat Phra That Chom Kitti

Wander up the 350-step mythical naga serpent staircase to the forest hill temples of Wat Phra That Chom Kitti . Alternatively, there is a road for those who can’t or do not want to climb the steps. The slightly off-kilter temple chedi is believed to contain a strand of Buddha’s hair. From this hilltop vantage point, the views of the surrounding area are spectacular.

Walking Street Market

Chiang Saen is blessed with numerous markets including the nightly Walking Street Market where you can mingle with locals and sample delicious foods on the banks of the mighty Mekong River. In addition to the Walking Street Market, there is also a Sunday Morning Market, a Saturday Evening Market and a daily produce market. The town’s markets are a great way to gain deeper insight into the local culture and to pick up some authentic Thai souvenirs.

Golden Triangle

Chiang Saen is located a short drive south of the famous Golden Triangle , and while you’re in the area, you might as well check out this much talked about spot. The Golden Triangle is where Laos , Myanmar and Thailand meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. The area is well-known for its opium-growing past and has a fascinating history to uncover.

Wat Phra That Pha Ngao

A few kilometres out of town is the sacred Wat Phra That Pha Ngao which offers splendid views of the countryside below and is home to a special Chiang Saen era Buddha statue. The serene atmosphere makes this temple an attractive place to explore and even includes an ancient manuscript depository.
